Abstract:The development of multimedia annotation technique provides the possibility to redesign the interfaces of widely used media players, and EmoPlayer is such a media player that can be used to play video clips with affective annotations. A user can select a character in a video clip and view the distribution of his/her emotions along the video timeline through a colour bar based interface. Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the efficiency of affective annotation. The results of these experiments indicate that affective annotation is effective in both improving the speed of locating a specific scene within a video clip and helping comprehend a video clip in a limited viewing time period. Based on the analysis of recorded operations of participants, the strategies employed by participants and the factors that might influence the utilization of affective annotation are also highlighted.

Abstract:In recent years, the connection between design and emotion has gained significant attention in design research. A variety of research methods, models and theories have been introduced and applied to comprehensively investigate and elucidate the impact of the relationship between design and emotion, as well as how emotions can best be used in design. However, the variable-centered research method ignores the complex interactions of these variables at the individual level. This study adopts a human-centered analysis method that considers users’ emotions and desires as creative drivers, and combines emotional design theory to propose design strategies for the visceral, behavioral and reflective levels respectively. Subsequently, the Tuyi design platform serves as a case study to refine the platform in line with the proposed strategy. Usability testing is then conducted to evaluate the enhancement. The findings indicate that the design strategy significantly boosts the platform’s usability, thereby presenting a valuable foundation for future design initiatives.
An Analysis of Emotion Communication Channels in Fan Fiction: Towards Emotional Storytelling

Abstract:Centrality of emotion for the stories told by humans is underpinned by numerous studies in literature and psychology. The research in automatic storytelling has recently turned towards emotional storytelling, in which characters' emotions play an important role in the plot development. However, these studies mainly use emotion to generate propositional statements in the form "A feels affection towards B" or "A confronts B". At the same time, emotional behavior does not boil down to such propositional descriptions, as humans display complex and highly variable patterns in communicating their emotions, both verbally and non-verbally. In this paper, we analyze how emotions are expressed non-verbally in a corpus of fan fiction short stories. Our analysis shows that stories written by humans convey character emotions along various non-verbal channels. We find that some non-verbal channels, such as facial expressions and voice characteristics of the characters, are more strongly associated with joy, while gestures and body postures are more likely to occur with trust. Based on our analysis, we argue that automatic storytelling systems should take variability of emotion into account when generating descriptions of characters' emotions.

Abstract:This research topic emerged from a growing recognition of the intricate relationship between language and emotion-a relationship that spans various disciplines and offers profound insights into human behavior and cognition. As researchers in psychology, linguistics, and related fields increasingly focus on the intersection of these domains, it became evident that there is a need for a comprehensive exploration of how language both reflects and shapes emotional experiences. The motivation behind this special issue is to bring together cuttingedge research that addresses these dynamics through diverse methodologies, providing a holistic view of how language and emotion influence one another.The dynamic interplay between language and emotion has been a focal point of research across multiple disciplines, revealing that these two domains are deeply interconnected. Emotional states impact language processing-affecting comprehension, word retrieval, and sentence construction (Barrett, 2017;Pavlenko, 2014). Conversely, language shapes and constructs emotional experiences, providing a conceptual framework for individuals to categorize and articulate their feelings (Lindquist, Satpute, & Gendron, 2012). This intricate relationship has captivated scholars across psychology, linguistics, neuroscience, and media studies, leading to the development of theoretical frameworks that explore the mutual influence between language and emotion. For example, the James-Lange Theory of Emotion examines how bodily responses relate to emotional experiences, while Cognitive Appraisal Theory explores how cognitive evaluations shape emotions. These theories have significantly advanced our understanding of the bidirectional influence between emotions and language, especially in terms of production and comprehension (Ellsworth & Scherer, 2003).Recent research continues to open new pathways for exploration, leading to the evolution of models in this area. Early work, such as Gross's process model of emotion regulation (Gross, 1998), illustrates how emotional regulation strategies can shape linguistic choices, particularly in social and educational contexts. Technological advancements have further enhanced our ability to analyze language through emotional and psychological lenses. Innovations in psycholinguistics and computational linguistics have introduced sophisticated methods for classifying and assessing language within emotional frameworks, providing invaluable insights into how emotions influence communication across various contexts (Pennebaker, 2011). These evolving theoretical frameworks have uncovered subtle variations in emotional expression related to attention, emotional states, social dynamics, cognitive processes, and individual differences, reshaping linguistic and emotional research.As the study of language and emotion continues to reveal new layers of complexity, this special issue offers a timely exploration of these intersections. The contributions featured in this collection examine themes such as emotional semantics, cross-linguistic emotional experiences, and the neural representation of language. Drawing from diverse disciplinary perspectives, these articles highlight the nuanced and multifaceted relationship between words and emotions, providing readers with fresh insights into this rapidly evolving field. Wen, Zhong, and Chen examine the socio-cognitive aspects of visual metaphors in Chinese poetry comics, shedding light on how these metaphors reflect cultural understandings of sadness. Meanwhile, Healey et al. investigate power dynamics in organizational settings, revealing that those in positions of authority tend to avoid sensitive language, complicating assumptions about power and communication. Mobarki and Alzahrani turn their focus to the metaphorical framing of sports fanaticism as a disease in Saudi newspapers, emphasizing the role of language in shaping societal perceptions. Kennison, Fritz, Hurtado Morales, and Chan-Tin explore emoji usage on social media, finding that personality traits and language patterns can be inferred from how emojis are used, offering new insights into digital communication. Bailey, Halamova, and Vráblová contribute an acoustic analysis of therapy sessions, identifying vocal patterns tied to self-compassion, self-criticism, and self-protection, thereby advancing the understanding of emotional expression in therapeutic contexts. Abstract:The emotions that human beings experience have a key role in the environments in which they operate. In art education, creative processes are influenced by the emotions and experiences lived by the individual, enabling a more emotional and creative design to make life more pleasant. The aim was to examine the research during the period 1917–2020 on the development of emotional creativity in art education. Mathematical and statistical techniques were applied to 984 articles carried from Elsevier’s Scopus database. The findings yielded data on the scientific productivity of the journal, authors, research institutions, and countries/territories that promoted this field. The data showed an exponential trend, mostly in the last decade. Five lines of research stand out: emotion, higher education, education, art, and leadership. Moreover, five future research directions related to visual art education, affective paradigm, metacompetency, expressive arts therapy group, and cognitive empathy were detected. This study establishes the link between psychology, neuroscience, and artistic education to constitute the decision-making of the promoters of this topic of research. The analysis of international research allowed us to focus the future publications of academics and researchers, in addition to guaranteeing an adequate approach to the objectives of the institutions and funding centers.

Abstract:The emergence of artificial emotional intelligence technology is revolutionizing the fields of computers and robotics, allowing for a new level of communication and understanding of human behavior that was once thought impossible. While recent advancements in deep learning have transformed the field of computer vision, automated understanding of evoked or expressed emotions in visual media remains in its infancy. This foundering stems from the absence of a universally accepted definition of "emotion", coupled with the inherently subjective nature of emotions and their intricate nuances. In this article, we provide a comprehensive, multidisciplinary overview of the field of emotion analysis in visual media, drawing on insights from psychology, engineering, and the arts. We begin by exploring the psychological foundations of emotion and the computational principles that underpin the understanding of emotions from images and videos. We then review the latest research and systems within the field, accentuating the most promising approaches. We also discuss the current technological challenges and limitations of emotion analysis, underscoring the necessity for continued investigation and innovation. We contend that this represents a "Holy Grail" research problem in computing and delineate pivotal directions for future inquiry. Abstract:We tend to consider emotions a manifestation of our innermost nature of human beings. Emotions characterize our lives in many ways and they chaperon every rational activity we carry out. Despite their pervasiveness, there are still many things we ignore about emotions. Among them, our understanding of how living beings transfer emotions is limited. In particular, there are highly sophisticated interactions between human beings that we would like to comprehend. For instance, think of a movie director who knows in advance the strong emotional impact that a certain scene will have on the spectators. Although many artists rely on some emotional devices, their talent and vision are still the key factors. In this work we analyze high-level protocols for transferring emotions between two intelligent agents. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to use communication protocols for modeling the exchange of human emotions. By means of a number of examples, we show that our protocols adequately model the engagement of the two parties. Beyond the theoretical interest, our proposal can provide a stepping stone for several applications that we also discuss in this paper.

Abstract:This book provides a new perspective on emotion in artificial systems. It presents an insightful explanation of how emotion might emerge deep inside the systems, and emotional behaviour could be seen as a consequence of their internal management. The final approach attempts to account for a range of events associated with emotion, from functional and behavioural features to aspects related to the dynamics and the development of feeling. The book provides a theoretical foundation for engineering and designing computational emotion as a framework for developing future adaptive systems. It includes a painstaking analysis of the rationales for the features of the final approach, including aspects from the fields of Artificial Intelligence, Psychology, the Cognitive Sciences and Model-based Systems. EmoEdit: Evoking Emotions through Image Manipulation

Abstract:Affective Image Manipulation (AIM) seeks to modify user-provided images to evoke specific emotional responses. This task is inherently complex due to its twofold objective: significantly evoking the intended emotion, while preserving the original image composition. Existing AIM methods primarily adjust color and style, often failing to elicit precise and profound emotional shifts. Drawing on psychological insights, we extend AIM by incorporating content modifications to enhance emotional impact. We introduce EmoEdit, a novel two-stage framework comprising emotion attribution and image editing. In the emotion attribution stage, we leverage a Vision-Language Model (VLM) to create hierarchies of semantic factors that represent abstract emotions. In the image editing stage, the VLM identifies the most relevant factors for the provided image, and guides a generative editing model to perform affective modifications. A ranking technique that we developed selects the best edit, balancing between emotion fidelity and structure integrity. To validate EmoEdit, we assembled a dataset of 416 images, categorized into positive, negative, and neutral classes. Our method is evaluated both qualitatively and quantitatively, demonstrating superior performance compared to existing state-of-the-art techniques. Additionally, we showcase EmoEdit's potential in various manipulation tasks, including emotion-oriented and semantics-oriented editing.

Abstract:Starting from the expression and perception of basic emotions such as disgust and fear, Liuzza and colleagues propose a validated Italian version of the body odor disgust sensitivity scale -BODS, measuring individual differences in body odor disgust, a trait that plays an important role in understanding, for example, social behaviors.Next, Frumento and colleagues analyze which perceptual features make an animal more-or-less scary to phobic and non-phobic people. By allowing participants to modify the spider's perceptual features (hairiness, body/leg size, and locomotion) in real-time on a computerized interface, their research aims to advance our knowledge of phobic preferences and improve the acceptability of exposure therapies.Moving from individual to dual processing of emotions, Smekal et al. investigated the factors underlying naturalistic action recognition and understanding, as well as the errors occurring during recognition failures. In particular, they provide evidence on how form, motion, and temporal information differentially contribute to subjective action understanding in the context of naturalistic action perception.In the language domain, Del Maschio et al. provide evidence that stronger emotional resonance underpins the processing of words in the native language of bilingual individuals, pointing to the different sensitivity of the hemodynamic responses to emotional information depending on the selected language.Emotions also play a vital role at the social level, impacting various crucial aspects of work such as job satisfaction, performance, and employee well-being. In the mini-review from Boukarras et al., studies that have employed interpersonal (neuro)physiology to quantify the asymmetrical contagion of emotions in different contexts are examined. The review revealed that delayed synchronization of physiological states is a widespread phenomenon that may underpin the transmission of emotions, with implications for various aspects of organizational life, including leader-to-employee communication, and could drive the development of effective leadership training programs Understanding the neurobiology of reward processing is another important aspect of the realm of emotions. Two studies in this collection address this topic. First, Bertrand et al. provide evidence of a diffuse limbic territory sensitive to reward within the subthalamic nucleus (STN) in non-human primates (macaca fascicularis). Then, Kraus and colleagues move to humans and systematically summarize available experimental results that assessed the modulation of social reward processing by intranasal oxytocin (IN-OXY) administration.Finally, Sirgiovanni et al. investigate how complex social emotions such as shame and guilt differently impact the tendency to internalize the causality of negative events, attribute responsibility to themselves and others, and engage in responsible behavior. Findings indicate that guilt-prone people tend to attribute a higher degree of culpability to others, which is consistent with the view that guilt motivates people to choose the "moral paths in life".The overall collection is a timely project as the study of emotions is not just important but necessary due to the significance of emotions in well-being and cultural change, which requires emotional intelligence from everyone to better understand each other as humans.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: Emotional creativity (EC) implies experiencing a complex emotional life, which is becoming increasingly necessary in societies that demand innovation and constant changes. This research studies the relation of EC as a dispositional trait with intrinsic motivation (IM) and academic engagement (AE).METHODS: A sample of 428 university Chilean students, 36.5% men and 63.5% women, with ages from 18 to 45 years-old (M = 20.37; DT = 2.71). Additionally, the mediating function of class-related positive emotions in this relation is explored.RESULTS: The obtained data indicate that developing high levels of dispositional EC enhances the activation of positive emotions, such as gratitude, love and hope, in the classroom. Furthermore, EC predicts IM and AE of university students by the experience of positive emotions.CONCLUSION: These results compel us to be aware of the importance that university students can understand the complexity of the emotional processes they undergo. A greater control of these emotions would allow students to maintain higher levels of interest in their studies at the different educational stages and to avoid the risk of school failure.

EmoFace: Audio-driven Emotional 3D Face Animation

Abstract:Audio-driven emotional 3D face animation aims to generate emotionally expressive talking heads with synchronized lip movements. However, previous research has often overlooked the influence of diverse emotions on facial expressions or proved unsuitable for driving MetaHuman models. In response to this deficiency, we introduce EmoFace, a novel audio-driven methodology for creating facial animations with vivid emotional dynamics. Our approach can generate facial expressions with multiple emotions, and has the ability to generate random yet natural blinks and eye movements, while maintaining accurate lip synchronization. We propose independent speech encoders and emotion encoders to learn the relationship between audio, emotion and corresponding facial controller rigs, and finally map into the sequence of controller values. Additionally, we introduce two post-processing techniques dedicated to enhancing the authenticity of the animation, particularly in blinks and eye movements. Furthermore, recognizing the scarcity of emotional audio-visual data suitable for MetaHuman model manipulation, we contribute an emotional audio-visual dataset and derive control parameters for each frames. Our proposed methodology can be applied in producing dialogues animations of non-playable characters (NPCs) in video games, and driving avatars in virtual reality environments. Our further quantitative and qualitative experiments, as well as an user study comparing with existing researches show that our approach demonstrates superior results in driving 3D facial models. Live Emoji: Semantic Emotional Expressiveness of 2D Live Animation

Abstract:Live animation of 2D characters has recently become a popular way for storytelling, and has potential application scenarios like tele-present agents or robots. As an extension of human-human communication, there is a need for augmenting the emotional communication experience of live animation. In this paper, we explore the emotional expressiveness issue of 2D live animation. In particular, we propose a descriptive emotion command model to bind a triggering action, the semantic meaning, psychology measurements, and behaviors of an emotional expression. Based on the model, we designed and implemented a proof-of-concept 2D live animation system, where a novel visual programming tool for editing the behaviors of 2D digital characters, and an emotion command recommendation algorithm are proposed. Through a user evaluation, we showcase the usability of our system and its potential for boosting creativity and enhancing the emotional communication experience.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Digital literature presents new ways of constructing aesthetic and emotional experience for child readers. This article reflects on emotion and affect in digital literature through the analysis of three literary apps for children. To deal with the complex phenomenon of the affective and emotional experience in digital reading, an interdisciplinary theoretical framework is proposed, relating Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology to Kress and van Leeuwen’s multimodal social semiotics. The corpus includes the apps Little Red Riding Hood, by producer Nosy Crow, The Monster at the End of This Book, by Jon Stone and Michael Smollin, and Hat Monkey, by Chris Haughton. It discusses how different semiotic resources are used in the representation of emotions and in suggesting emotional tension to the child reader, with embodiment and the intrinsic relationship between reader’s bodies and their emotional experience as a central part of apps’ textual construction.

Abstract:The field of artificial intelligence (AI) has gained immense traction over the past decade, producing increasingly successful applications as research strives to understand and exploit neural processing specifics. Nonetheless emotion, despite its demonstrated significance to reinforcement, social integration, and general development, remains a largely stigmatized and consequently disregarded topic by most engineers and computer scientists. In this article, we endorse emotions value for the advancement of artificial cognitive processing, as well as explore real-world use cases of emotion-augmented AI. A schematization is provided on the psychological-neurophysiologic basics of emotion in order to bridge the interdisciplinary gap preventing emulation and integration in AI methodology, as well as exploitation by current systems. In addition, we overview three major subdomains of AI greatly benefiting from emotion, and produce a systematic survey of meaningful yet recent contributions to each area. To conclude, we address crucial challenges and promising research paths for the future of emotion in AI with the hope that more researchers will develop an interest for the topic and find it easier to develop their own contributions.

Abstract:Motion capture technology has enabled the acquisition of high quality human motions for animating digital characters with extremely high fidelity. However, despite all the advances in motion editing and synthesis, it remains an open problem to modify pre-captured motions that are highly expressive, such as contemporary dances, for stylization and emotionalization. In this work, we present a novel approach for stylizing such motions by using emotion coordinates defined by the Russell's Circumplex Model (RCM). We extract and analyze a large set of body and motion features, based on the Laban Movement Analysis (LMA), and choose the effective and consistent features for characterizing emotions of motions. These features provide a mechanism not only for deriving the emotion coordinates of a newly input motion, but also for stylizing the motion to express a different emotion without having to reference the training data. Such decoupling of the training data and new input motions eliminates the necessity of manual processing and motion registration. We implement the two-way mapping between the motion features and emotion coordinates through Radial Basis Function (RBF) regression and interpolation, which can stylize free-style highly dynamic dance movements at interactive rates. Our results and user studies demonstrate the effectiveness of the stylization framework with a variety of dance movements exhibiting a diverse set of emotions.
Feeling good, learning better? Effectivity of an emotional design procedure in multimedia learning

Abstract:Emotional designing describes the elicitation of positive affect during learning through specific design elements of the learning environment to enhance learning. This experimental study examined the effectivity of an emotional design procedure on learning performance. Moreover, the learner’s affective states before learning were taken into consideration as possible moderators. 145 university students learned for 20 min either in a multimedia positive affect inducing learning environment (n = 85) or a neutral multimedia learning environment (n = 60). The Affect was measured before, during, and after learning. Performance was tested afterwards. To control for possible confounding effects, achievement motivation, emotion regulation, and situational interest were measured. In contrast to earlier findings, no superiority effect of the emotional design procedure was found. Furthermore, the effectivity of the emotional design procedure was not moderated by student’s prior effective states. However, there was a main influence of student’s positive affect on transfer performance.
