Abstract:Artificial emotion is a new and attractive area to the intelligent control community. In this paper, the major medical psychological view-points on emotion, i.e., the characteristics of emotion and the relationship among emotion, cognition and intelligence, are introduced. The signals based on which emotion recognition is carried out, as well as the main approaches to the recognition and the modeling of emotion are overviewed. Applications of artificial emotion to those areas such as intelligent robotics, human-machine interaction, and intelligent transportation are also introduced, and the future works are further discussed.

Abstract:Emotional states based three-dimensional (3-D) Fuzzy Atmosfield (FA) is proposed to express the feeling between humans and robots in communication, and is built with 3-D coordinates, i.e. “friendly-hostile”, “lively-calm”, and “casual-formal” axes. The FA aims to be an effective tool to proceed with the communication paying attention to the atmosphere generated by individual emotional state which is calculated from bimodal communication cues namely emotional-speech and emotional-gesture by using weighted fusion and fuzzy inference. A novel emotion recognition approach is presented which consists of two steps, i.e., classification of six basic emotions for initial emotional states in the Affinity-Pleasure-Arousal emotion space, and emotional transition from prior state by using fuzzy logic. Home party enjoying demonstration confirms FA's availability empirically by questionnaires from unrelated persons of authors' group, where smooth communication between four humans and five eye robots is realized in Mascot Robot System.

Abstract:Emotion plays a significant role in human understanding and generally connected with rational decision making, attitudes, human activity, and human intelligence. To create realistic emotional relations between human beings and machines, the research community's increasing interests need reliable and deployable solutions to recognize human emotional conditions. Automatic emotion detection is one of the main obstacles in providing innovative methods for more comfortable and more objective diagnosis, communication and analysis. Hence in this paper, an Artificial intelligence-assisted emotion prediction model (AIEPM) has been proposed to evaluate the probability of digital representation, identification and estimation of feelings, their state-of-the-art methods and primary research guidance. The proposed AIEPM analyses the effect on multimodal detection of emotional models. This paper presents emerging works based on language, sound, image, film, and physiological signals using current methods such as machine intelligence for recognizing human emotion. The proposed emphasis on this cutting-edge analysis reflects elements like the form and presentation of emotional stimulation, the sample's scale. The numerical outcome suggested AIEPM, according to age, behaviour classification according to age (95.2%), emotions state recognition high probability in satisfaction compared to the proposed method, accuracy ratio (89.6%), performance ratio (94.5%) and recognition outcomes of existing and proposed work (98.2%) compared to other existing approaches improve behaviour classification.

Abstract:This study presents a comprehensive literature review on the convergence of affective computing, interactive installation art, multi-dimensional sensory stimulation, and artificial intelligence (AI) in measuring emotional responses, demonstrating the potential of artificial intelligence in emotion recognition as a tool for sustainable development. It addresses the problem of understanding emotional response and measurement in the context of interactive installation art under artificial intelligence (AI), emphasizing sustainability as a key factor. The study aims to fill the existing research gaps by examining three key aspects: sensory stimulation, multi-dimensional interactions, and engagement, which have been identified as significant contributors to profound emotional responses in interactive installation art. The proposed approach involves conducting a process analysis of emotional responses to interactive installation art, aiming to develop a conceptual framework that explores the variables influencing emotional responses. This study formulates hypotheses that make specific predictions about the relationships between sensory stimulation, multi-dimensional interactions, engagement, and emotional responses. By employing the ASSURE model combined with experimental design, the research methodology ensures a systematic and comprehensive study implementation. The implications of this project lie in advancing the understanding of emotional experiences in interactive installation art under AI, providing insights into the underlying mechanisms that drive these experiences, and their influence on individual well-being from a sustainable perspective. The contributions of this research include bridging the identified research gaps, refining theoretical frameworks, and guiding the design of more impactful and emotionally resonant interactive artworks with sustainability in mind. This research seeks not only to fill the existing gaps in understanding emotional experiences in interactive installation art, but also to guide the development of immersive and emotionally engaging installations, ultimately advancing the broader field of human–computer interaction, promoting individual well-being, and contribute to sustainable development.

Abstract:Marketing strategies without emotion will not work. Emotion stimulates the mind 3,000 times quicker than rational thought. Such emotion invokes either a positive or a negative response and physical expressions. Understanding the underlying dynamics of users' emotions can efficiently help companies formulate marketing strategies and support after-sale services. While prior work has focused mainly on qualitative aspects, in this paper we present our research on quantitative analysis of how an individual's emotional state can be inferred from her historic emotion log and how this person's emotional state influences (or is influenced by) her friends in the social network. We statistically study the dynamics of individual's emotions and discover several interesting as well as important patterns. Based on this discovery, we propose an approach referred to as MoodCast to learn to infer individuals' emotional states. In both mobile-based social network and online virtual network, we verify the effectiveness of our proposed approach.

Abstract:Core to understanding emotion are subjective experiences and their expression in facial behavior. Past studies have largely focused on six emotions and prototypical facial poses, reflecting limitations in scale and narrow assumptions about the variety of emotions and their patterns of expression. We examine 45,231 facial reactions to 2,185 evocative videos, largely in North America, Europe, and Japan, collecting participants' self-reported experiences in English or Japanese and manual and automated annotations of facial movement. Guided by Semantic Space Theory, we uncover 21 dimensions of emotion in the self-reported experiences of participants in Japan, the United States, and Western Europe, and considerable cross-cultural similarities in experience. Facial expressions predict at least 12 dimensions of experience, despite massive individual differences in experience. We find considerable cross-cultural convergence in the facial actions involved in the expression of emotion, and culture-specific display tendencies-many facial movements differ in intensity in Japan compared to the U.S./Canada and Europe but represent similar experiences. These results quantitatively detail that people in dramatically different cultures experience and express emotion in a high-dimensional, categorical, and similar but complex fashion.
Conveying Emotions to Robots through Touch and Sound

Abstract:Human emotions can be conveyed through nuanced touch gestures. However, there is a lack of understanding of how consistently emotions can be conveyed to robots through touch. This study explores the consistency of touch-based emotional expression toward a robot by integrating tactile and auditory sensory reading of affective haptic expressions. We developed a piezoresistive pressure sensor and used a microphone to mimic touch and sound channels, respectively. In a study with 28 participants, each conveyed 10 emotions to a robot using spontaneous touch gestures. Our findings reveal a statistically significant consistency in emotion expression among participants. However, some emotions obtained low intraclass correlation values. Additionally, certain emotions with similar levels of arousal or valence did not exhibit significant differences in the way they were conveyed. We subsequently constructed a multi-modal integrating touch and audio features to decode the 10 emotions. A support vector machine (SVM) model demonstrated the highest accuracy, achieving 40% for 10 classes, with "Attention" being the most accurately conveyed emotion at a balanced accuracy of 87.65%.

Abstract:Emotion plays an important role in our daily lives. Ever since the 19th century, experimental psychologists have attempted to understand and explain human emotion. Despite an extensive amount of research conducted by psychologists, anthropologists, and sociologists over the past 150 years, researchers still cannot agree on the definition of emotion itself and have continued to try and devise ways to measure emotional states. In this paper, we provide an overview of the most prominent theories in emotional psychology (dating from the late 19th century to the present day), as well as a summary of a number of studies which attempt to measure certain aspects of emotion. This paper is organized chronologically; first with an analysis of various uni-modal studies, followed by a review of multi-modal research. Our findings suggest that there is insufficient evidence to neither prove nor disprove the existence of coherent emotional expression, both within subjects and between subjects. Furthermore, the results seem to be heavily influenced by both experimental conditions as well as by the theoretical assumptions that underpin them.

Abstract:Technology has become an essential part in every aspect of our lives. However the key to a successful implementation of a technology depends on the acceptance by the general public. In order to increase the acceptance various approaches can be applied. In this paper, we will examine the human-robot emotional interaction by investigating the capabilities of a developed low-resolution RGB-LED display in the context of artificial emotions. We are focusing on four of the most representative human emotions which include happiness, anger, sadness and fear. We will work with colors and dynamic light patterns which are supposed to evoke various associations. In an experiment, the use these patterns as expressions of emotions are validated. The results of the conducted study show that some of the considered basic emotions can be recognized by human observers.

Abstract:The increasing interest in the effects of emotion on cognitive, social, and neural processes creates a constant need for efficient and reliable techniques for emotion elicitation. Emotions are important in many areas, especially in advertising design and video production. The impact of emotions on the audience plays an important role. This paper analyzes the physical elements in a two-dimensional emotion map by extracting the physical elements of a video (color, light intensity, sound, etc.). We used k-nearest neighbors (K-NN), support vector machine (SVM), and multilayer perceptron (MLP) classifiers in the machine learning method to accurately predict the four dimensions that express emotions, as well as summarize the relationship between the two-dimensional emotion space and physical elements when designing and producing video.

Abstract:Humans use a host of signals to infer the emotional state of others. In general, computer systems that leverage signals from multiple modalities will be more robust and accurate in the same task. We present a multimodal affect and context sensing platform. The system is composed of video, audio and application analysis pipelines that leverage ubiquitous sensors (camera and microphone) to log and broadcast emotion data in real-time. The platform is designed to enable easy prototyping of novel computer interfaces that sense, respond and adapt to human emotion. This paper describes the different audio, visual and application processing components and explains how the data is stored and/or broadcast for other applications to consume. We hope that this platform helps advance the state-of-the-art in affective computing by enabling development of novel human-computer interfaces.

Abstract:A key goal in human-robot interaction (HRI) is to design scenarios between humanoid robots and humans such that the interaction is perceived as collaborative and natural, yet safe and comfortable for the human. Human skills like verbal and non-verbal communication are essential elements as humans tend to attribute social behaviors to robots. However, aspects like the uncanny valley and different technical affinity levels can impede the success of HRI scenarios, which has consequences on the establishment of long-term interaction qualities like trust and rapport. In the present study, we investigate the impact of a humanoid robot on human emotional responses during the performance of a cognitively demanding task. We set up three different conditions for the robot with increasing levels of social cue expressions in a between-group study design. For the analysis of emotions, we consider the eye gaze behavior, arousal-valence for affective states, and the detection of action units. Our analysis reveals that the participants display a high tendency toward positive emotions in presence of a robot with clear social skills compared to other conditions, where we show how emotions occur only at task onset. Our study also shows how different expression levels influence the analysis of the robots' role in HRI. Finally, we critically discuss the current trend of automatized emotion or affective state recognition in HRI and demonstrate issues that have direct consequences on the interpretation and, therefore, claims about human emotions in HRI studies.

Abstract:People have the ability to make sensible assumptions about other people's emotional states by being sympathetic, and because of our common sense of knowledge and the ability to think visually. Over the years, much research has been done on providing machines with the ability to detect human emotions and to develop automated emotional intelligence systems. The computer's ability to detect human emotions is gaining popularity in creating sensitive systems such as learning environments, health care systems and real-world. Improving people's health has been the subject of much research. This paper describes the formation as conceptual evidence of emotional acquisition and control in intelligent health settings. The authors of this paper aim for an unconventional approach with a friendly look to get emotional scenarios from the system to establish a functional, non-intrusive and emotionally-sensitive environment where users can do their normal activities naturally and see the program only when pleasant mood activating services are received. The context-sensitive system interacts with users to detect and differentiate emotions through facial expressions or speech recognition, to make music recommendations and mood color treatments with the services installed on their IoT devices.

Abstract:The field of artificial intelligence (AI) has gained immense traction over the past decade, producing increasingly successful applications as research strives to understand and exploit neural processing specifics. Nonetheless emotion, despite its demonstrated significance to reinforcement, social integration, and general development, remains a largely stigmatized and consequently disregarded topic by most engineers and computer scientists. In this article, we endorse emotions value for the advancement of artificial cognitive processing, as well as explore real-world use cases of emotion-augmented AI. A schematization is provided on the psychological-neurophysiologic basics of emotion in order to bridge the interdisciplinary gap preventing emulation and integration in AI methodology, as well as exploitation by current systems. In addition, we overview three major subdomains of AI greatly benefiting from emotion, and produce a systematic survey of meaningful yet recent contributions to each area. To conclude, we address crucial challenges and promising research paths for the future of emotion in AI with the hope that more researchers will develop an interest for the topic and find it easier to develop their own contributions.

Abstract:Emotion ontologies have been developed to capture affect, a concept that encompasses discrete emotions and feelings, especially for research on sentiment analysis, which analyzes a customer's attitude towards a company or a product. However, there have been limited efforts to adapt and employ these ontologies. This research surveys and synthesizes emotion ontology studies to develop a Framework of Emotion Ontologies that can be used to help a user select or design an appropriate emotion ontology to support sentiment analysis and increase the user's understanding of the roles of affect, context, and behavioral information with respect to sentiment. The framework, which is derived from research on emotion ontologies, psychology, and sentiment analysis, classifies emotion ontologies as discrete emotion or one of two hybrid ontologies that are combinations of the discrete, dimensional, or componential process emotion paradigms. To illustrate its usefulness, the framework is applied to the development of an emotion ontology for a sentiment analysis application.

Using emotion recognition technology to assess the effects of different multimedia materials on learning emotion and performance

Abstract:With the gradual adoption of multimedia technologies in curriculum designs, the need has increased for in-depth studies that explore how different presentation techniques for multimedia materials affect learner emotions and learner performance. This study employed the emWave system, a stress detector for emotional states that was developed by the Institute of HeartMath for measuring changes in learner emotional states when presented with different multimedia materials with the same learning content. By analyzing the collected emotional data and assessment of learning performance, this study explores how different multimedia learning materials affect learning emotions, and ultimately, learning performance. Preliminary results show that the video-based multimedia material generates the best learning performance and most positive emotion among three types of multimedia materials assessed in the study. Moreover, a partial correlation exists between negative learning emotion and learning performance. This study confirms that simultaneously considering pretest score and negative emotion can predict learning performance of learners who use video-based multimedia material for learning. It also finds significant gender difference in learner emotional states while using different multimedia materials for learning: female learners in this study are more easily affected by different multimedia material than male learners.

Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence

Abstract:Improving the interaction between artificial systems and their users is an important issue in artificial intelligence. In current trends in social robotics, this is accomplished by making such systems not just intelligent but also emotionally sensitive. Therefore, artificial emotional intelligence (AEI) is focused on simulating and extending natural emotion (especially human emotion) to provide robots with the capability to recognise and express emotions in human–robot interaction (HRI). In this treatise, we present an overview of the advances made in AEI by highlighting the progress recorded in the areas of emotion classification, emotional robots, and emotion space modelling in HRI. This review is aimed at providing readers with a succinct, yet adequate compendium of the progresses made in the emerging AEI sub-discipline. It is hoped this effort will stimulate further interest aimed at the pursuit of more advanced algorithms and models for available technologies and possible applications to other domains.
