Abstract:This article analyses the development of wind energy in Turkey - the number and capacity of installed wind generators, as well as the generated electricity. It was established that the number of wind power plants is 99 with a total installed capacity of 3933 MW, and the amount of electricity produced by wind power plants is 17909.3 GWh / year. Turkey has been shown to have great potential for developing electricity generation from offshore wind farms. The increase in the number of offshore wind turbines in the coming years is expected to increase the relative share of renewable sources in the country’s energy mix, to contribute to the technological and industrial development of the regions, to produce electricity from renewable and environmentally friendly sources and to reduce the country’s energy dependence. It has been established that there are appropriate conditions in Turkey for the development of wind energy and preconditions have been created for achieving the target for promoting the use of renewable energy sources by 2023.

Abstract:Wind turbine technology has advanced significantly during the past 10 years all around the world. To raise the turbine capacity factor, developers are building bigger, more dependable wind turbines with bigger hub heights and rotor diameters. Long-bladed, large-rotor, tall-tower, and low-specific power wind turbines with higher capacity factors (CFs) developed in this direction may become more important in the future energy systems since they can generate electricity in more economical conditions. The increase in nameplate capacity, hub height, and rotor diameter of onshore wind turbines around the world as well as in Turkey is, therefore, examined in this study. The impacts of this development in wind turbine size on the levelized cost of electricity, total installed cost, and CF are analyzed. Moreover, the effects of this expansion on turbine-specific power capacity, wind farm capacity, and the number of wind turbines per GW are thoroughly evaluated. To promote future advancements in large-scale wind turbine technology, these inspection results can be used to evaluate the technical and financial viability of turbines. They can also serve as a useful data source and a substantial advantage in the construction and development of new wind energy facilities.Graphical abstract

Techno-economic analysis of an offshore wind farm on the eastern Mediterranean Sea coast

Abstract:Turkey has rapidly become one of the top markets for onshore wind energy with a 10 GW onshore wind power installation, a significant accomplishment for the nation. It means that Turkey's wind energy capacity has more than tenfold increase in the last 10 years. Despite the fact that Turkey has no offshore wind farms, research has indicated a significant and untapped energy potential. This work provides a comprehensive techno-economic analysis of the Samandag Offshore Wind Farm (OWF) project in Turkey. To undertake an economic feasibility study under different Feed-in Tariffs (FiT) and discount rates, a discounted cash flow economic model is utilized. This study takes into consideration the economic indicators utilized in decision-making processes from the perspective of an OWF investor. The planned OWF project is shown to be economically viable only provided specific techno-economic prerequisites are satisfied. Samandag City has a lower levelized cost of energy (LCOE), which is roughly $69.97/MWh, according to the findings. However, the findings show that the net present value (NPV) is very sensitive to discount rates and FiT. The goal of this research is to contribute scientifically to the development of offshore wind energy in Turkey.

Abstract:Energy is a vital issue, which is directly related to development. There are many publications on energy and development, renewable energy, and sustainable development. As of 2021, Türkiye is foreign dependent at a rate of 70% in energy. Therefore, energy imports constitute a tremendous economic charge for Türkiye. For this reason, within the scope of this research, energy policies and the process of Türkiye in energy are discussed. First, the policies developed regarding energy policies in eleven development plans were examined. Then, by focusing on the recent past, fundamental economic indicators and energy indicators in Türkiye’s NUTS1 regions, a regional analysis was carried out. Finally, the regions' energy installed capacities, energy consumption, and production data are emphasized and maps were made. "How is the energy sources distribution in NUTS1 regions in Türkiye?" and "What kind of path has been followed in the last 20 years on renewable energy, and what is the latest situation?" questions were answered in this study.

Abstract:In this study, the wind energy potential of Tekirdağ was investigated obtaining the wind data from meteorology stations located in nine districts of the province and recorded hourly at 10 m altitude between the years of 2014 and 2018. Moreover, monthly average wind and Weibull and Rayleigh probability distributions, as well as hourly wind speeds, were analyzed for each district. Furthermore, monthly dominant wind directions and the ratio of dominant winds to all wind blowing numbers were determined for each district and wind speeds and wind power densities by month were compared. In addition to determination of wind energy potential, four different types of wind turbines which can be installed in the examined regions were assessed in terms of techno-economic and environmental aspects by using RETScreen Expert software. Capacity factors of selected wind turbines, initial installation costs, annual savings incomes, and annual energy amounts were determined by district. The gross greenhouse gas emission amounts that can be prevented from being released into the environment have been determined via the usage of wind turbine. Finally, the most suitable wind turbines for the districts were determined through financial sustainability analysis. Correspondingly, it has been determined that if the Enercon E2-82 wind turbine is installed in the Marmara Ereğlisi district, optimal results will be obtained. It is thought that this study will contribute to the development of the wind energy potential and planning of the wind power plants in the regions showing the similar characteristics with the examined one with regard to wind energy.

Wind energy resource assessment of Kütahya, Turkey using WAsP and layout optimization

Abstract:Kütahya is considered as a candidate region for a wind farm investment due to Turkey's 2023 energy targets and its proximity to other wind farm investments. In this study, two years of wind data collected from a hill near the Evliya Çelebi Campus of Kütahya Dumlupınar University was used to evaluate the wind farm potential of Kütahya. First, the wind speed, wind direction, wind shear, turbulence intensity and wind speed ramp characteristics were determined. Second, the WAsP software was used to create a wind atlas for the region. Three sites with strong wind potential were evaluated. A techno-economic analysis was conducted using five types of wind turbines selected from the WAsP database. Third, optimization of a wind farm layout was conducted by considering different hub height options for 14 commercial wind turbines using MATLAB software. It was shown theoretically that a wind farm with a power capacity of 25 MW can operate with a capacity factor of 35%. However, due to the relatively high topographical ruggedness index on the wind farm site, the calculated value for the capacity factor could not be reached in a real-life application.

Abstract:Turkey is an energy importing nation with more than half of our energy requirements met by imported fuels. Air pollution is becoming a significant environmental concern in the country. In this regard, renewable energy resources are becoming attractive for sustainable energy development and environmental pollution mitigation in Turkey. Turkey's geographical location has several advantages for extensive use of most of these renewable energy sources. Because of this and our limited fossil fuel resources, a gradual shift from fossil fuels to renewables seems to be a serious alternative for Turkey's energy future. This article presents a review of the present energy situation and assesses sustainability, technical, and economical potential of renewable energy sources, and future policies for the energy sector in Turkey. Throughout the paper, problems relating to renewable energy sources, environment, and sustainable development are discussed for both current and future energy investments. The renewable energy potential of the country and its present status are evaluated.

Abstract:As a domestic and non-intermittent resource, geothermal energy offers countries a clean and sustainable energy option while setting their energy mix strategies. Turkiye, endowed with rich energy fields, stands out as one of the fastest-growing countries in geothermal energy. The dramatic installed power capacity increase and significant expansion in the geothermal energy market, particularly after 2010 following the initiation of the incentive scheme, are pretty remarkable. Nonetheless, it is also evident that geothermal energy investments in the country have shown a decreasing trend in recent years. At this point, this paper aims to reveal the opportunities and challenges in the development of geothermal energy as the first comprehensive qualitative analysis for Turkiye. Furthermore, it evaluates the diffusion of geothermal energy in Turkiye based on the Technological Innovation Systems (TIS) framework to gain insight into the Turkish geothermal sector. According to the interviewees, financial and political barriers such as high investor costs, insufficient incentives for power generation, and the lack of incentives for direct utilization, along with lengthy and exhausting permitting processes, still hinder the prevalence of geothermal energy utilization in the country. Respondents find that Geothermal suggests a huge opportunity for the Green Energy transition in Turkiye and aids economic development through increases in employment opportunities and household welfare using combined uses in district heating, electricity, and greenhouse usage.

Abstract:Since the energy crises in the 1970’s, public and private decision makers are considering how to achieve a sustainable transition from fossil fuel based energy to sustainable and clean energies – namely renewable energies. Combined with the improvement of energy efficiency and the rational use of energy, renewable energy can provide everything fossil fuels currently offer in terms of heating and cooling, electricity generation and transportation. Renewable energy technologies posses many long term benefits including energy security, job creation, business opportunities, sustainable development and prevention of global warming.Turkey’s population is growing at an annual rate of 1.04%. If Turkey uses only traditional energy sources, it simply will not have enough energy capacity for its population. Renewable energy sources have the potential to make a large contribution to Turkey’s sustainable and independent energy future.Turkey aims to utilize its energy potential, including from renewable sources in a cost-effective manner. Turkey targets the share of renewable resources in electricity generation to be at least 30% by 2023 has in its 2009 Electricity Market and Security of Supply Strategy. Positive achievements have been obtained in renewable energy development and manufacturing in Turkey over the past decade. The renewable energy related legislation has been intensified. To meet its 30% target, the current promotion mechanism for renewable sources of electricity relies on feed-in tariffs for different renewable energy sources. Large hydropower is already competitive to conventional fossil-based electricity, so feed-in tariffs in the new RE Law are set to facilitate expanding the deployment of other, less mature renewable energy technologies.

Abstract:Recently, the importance of renewable energy sources has increased significantly as climate change has become an important long term threat to global ecosystems and the world economy. In the face of increased concern about climate change and high fossil fuel costs together with a reduction in the primary energy sources such as oil, natural gas and coal, alternative energy sources (renewables) are increasingly needed to respond to the threat of climate change and growing energy demand in the world. Recent developments in Turkey, such as the liberalization of the electricity market and improvements in the renewable legislations, have accelerated the growth process and investment opportunities in the field of renewable energy. Turkey′s naturally endowed potential for renewables, such as solar, geothermal and wind, also accompanied these developments and attracted world attention to this market. In Turkey, renewable energy sources have gained great importance in the last decades due to growing energy demand and incentive policies which foster the utilization of renewable energy sources. This study aims to explore the availability and potential of renewable energy sources in Turkey and discuss the government policies and economic aspects.

Abstract:<p>Hydrogen can be considered as the most promising fuel towards the greenization. Developed and developing countries around the world have formed their research, investments and directives on hydrogen. The leading countries in this field can be cited as members of the European Union and the United States. Laws and regulations have been shared with the public under the aegis of the established policies. Additionally, determined targets for the short, medium and long term and their feedbacks are recorded by the reports of the competent authorities. Although the Republic of Turkey was aware of the importance of the issue, though there is no open source inventory as disclosed. In Turkey, governmental organization, General Directorate of Energy Affairs (YEGM), and foundations, such as the National Hydrogen Association (NHA), have been encouraging and supporting multidisciplinary studies and activities within the country and internationally. In this study, it is aimed to provide numerical analyses from 1970 to the present by considering hydrogen energy. Related information and data were compiled from online resources on scholarly publications, organizations, groups, books and book chapters, master and doctorate theses, patents received and completed projects. It is also aimed to create a unique information source to refer with respect to planning and activities.</p>

Abstract:Wind energy, being a sustainable energy source, is a benign, dependable, limitless, and cost-effective source of energy. This study involved the creation of a wind power plant site selection map at a provincial scale using a GIS application. The map took into account both environmental risks and environmental criteria. A wind energy measurement station of the PCE-FWS 20 type, equipped with a touch screen, was installed in the Rahva campus of Bitlis Eren University. Over the course of one year, data on wind direction, wind speed, temperature, relative humidity, and air pressure were collected at 5-s intervals and averaged over 20-min periods. The purpose of this study was to assess the suitability of the measured region for wind energy potential. A comprehensive statistical analysis was conducted using all the data collected during this period to assess the wind energy potential in the studied region. The Weibull distribution was employed to analyse the wind energy potential of this particular region. We employed graphical techniques to ascertain the Weibull distribution. The wind data analysis and simulation were conducted using the Matlab application. Analysed were the monthly statistical wind energy potential of the region, wherein the average wind speed and power density values were determined and presented through graphs at 20-min intervals. Upon analyzing the map generated using the Geographical Information Systems (GIS) technique, it has been ascertained that Bitlis Eren University Rahva campus is located in favorable areas.

Analysis and evaluation of distributed photovoltaic generation in electrical energy production and related regulations of Turkey

Abstract:Turkey is a developing country with rising energy demands. Energy access is one of the key parameters to sustain the development, since the country meets a considerable part of energy demands by imported fossil fuels. Distributed photovoltaic power generation (DPPG) is one of the sustainable solutions to increase renewable energy sources (RES) shares in primary energy demand. This paper investigates Turkey's current policy system with its excellences and shortcomings in different stages of distributed photovoltaic power generation development in the country. By the assessment of the current situation, a strengths (S) and weaknesses (W) and external opportunities (O) and threats (T) analysis is also conducted to propose urgent strategies to contribute the development of DPPG sector in Turkey. In conclusion, future roles of the government and energy market are discussed to increase integration of DPPG in Turkish renewable energy market comprehensively.

Abstract:Wind energy is an eco-friendly, renewable, domestic, and infinite resource. These factors render the construction of wind turbines appealing to nations, prompting numerous governments to implement incentives to augment their installed capacity of wind turbines. Alongside augmenting the installed capacity of wind turbines, identifying suitable locations for their installation is crucial for optimizing turbine performance. This study aims to evaluate potential sites for wind power plant installation via a GIS, a mapping technique. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was employed to assess the locations, including both quantitative and qualitative aspects that significantly impact the wind farm suitability map. Utilizing the GIS methodology, all datasets were examined through height and raster transformations of land surface temperature, plant density index, air pressure, humidity, wind speed, air temperature, land cover, solar radiation, aspect, slope, and topographical characteristics, resulting in the creation of a wind farm map. The correlation between the five-year meteorological data and environmental parameters (wind direction, daily wind speed, daily maximum and minimum air temperatures, daily relative humidity, daily average air temperature, solar radiation duration, daily cloud cover, air humidity, and air pressure) influencing the wind power plant in Iğdır province, including Iğdır Airport, Karakoyunlu, Aralık, and Tuzluca districts, was analyzed. If wind energy towers are installed at 1 km intervals across an area of roughly 858,180 hectares in Igdir province, an estimated 858,180 GWh of wind energy can be generated. The GIS-derived wind power plant map indicates that the installation sites for wind power plants are located in regions susceptible to wind erosion.

Abstract:One of the most effective ways to address the environmental issues triggered by fossil fuels is through the use of renewable energy. In this study, clean and sustainable power and hydrogen generation with three renewable energy sources , a wind-solar-geothermal assisted hybrid plant is planned, investigated, and analyzed. An exhaustive thermodynamic performance analysis is executed to specify the system efficiency by the way energy and exergy efficiency methods. Moreover, this developed cycle comprises a solar photovoltaic (PV) unit, a triple flash geothermal power plant, wind turbines for power generation, and a hydrogen generation and liquefaction unit. Additionally, a case study for Isparta is conducted using actual data on wind speed and solar radiation. A parametric analysis, on the other hand, is conducted to figure out the consequences of the examined cycle's performance. In light of the examination outcomes, the developed plant's power rate is figured as 9942 kW. The hydrogen generation rate and sustainability index are also figured out as 0.02143 kg/s and 2.003, respectively. Finally, the proposed hybrid cycle encloses an energetic and exergetic performance of 32.755 % and 50.06 %, respectively.

Abstract:The usage of renewable energy has an increasing trend to replace fossil fuel or other forms of energy that damage the environment in the last decades. Many countries have been realized the need for clean energy to reduce the greenhouse effect and carbon emissions. Turkey signed the Paris Agreement in 2016 and ratified in 2021, and set net zero carbon target by 2053. The objective of the Paris Agreement is to limit global warming to 1,5-2 degrees Celsius compared to preindustrial levels. However, the high demand for energy for industry or high installation fees of renewable energy can be limiting factors for developing countries like Turkey. Turkey is rich in terms of renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, geothermal, hydropower, and biomass. Even though Turkey is considered having one of the highest hydropower, wind, and geothermal energy potential among the European countries, the installed capacity is much lower compared to its potential. The current status of renewable energy sources and renewable energy potential of Turkey are evaluated in this review study.

Abstract:The aim of this study is to investigate the environmental impacts of a full-scale wind farm using life cycle assessment methodology. The facility in question is an onshore wind farm located in Turkey with a total installed capacity of 47.5 MW consisting of 2.5 MW Nordex wind turbines. Hub height and rotor diameter of the wind turbines are 100 m. The system boundary is defined as material extraction, part production, construction, operation and maintenance and decommissioning phases of the wind farm. The functional unit is 1-kWh electricity produced. Environmental impacts are mainly generated by manufacturing and installation operations. Steel sheet usage in tower manufacturing is the main contributor to abiotic depletion of fossil resources, acidification, eutrophication, global warming and marine aquatic ecotoxicity potentials. Apart from ozone layer depletion, end-of-life phase decreases the environmental impacts due to metal recycling. Metal recycling ratio scenario results show that when the recycling ratio decreases from 90 to 20%; increases of 110%, 102%, 92% and 87% are observed in acidification, terrestrial ecotoxicity, marine aquatic ecotoxicity and global warming potentials, respectively. In the baseline, the main parts which are manufactured in Germany are transported by sea to Turkey. Transportation scenario involves shifting the manufacturing of main parts to Turkey then transporting these parts by trucks to the farm. This conversion causes increases of 31%, 35% and 27% in abiotic depletion of fossil resources, freshwater aquatic ecotoxicity and global warming potentials, respectively, while causing decreases of 11% and 4% in acidification and eutrophication potentials generated by transportation activities, respectively.

Abstract:In this research, wind energy potential of a specific region in Western Turkey has been analyzed by using WindPRO software. The analyzed site is located in Ayvacık district of Çanakkale province of Turkey. Two types of wind energy turbines with 3 MW power including Enercon E-101/3000 and Nordex N117/3000 have been selected for the analyses. Weibull distribution has been utilized in the wind energy potential assessment. Also, average wind speed values and prevailing wind directions have been calculated for the selected locations in the analyzed region. The prevailing wind direction was determined for Enercon E-101/3000 and Nordex N117/3000 turbines as NNW and SSE, respectively. Estimated electrical energy generation values for Enercon E-101/3000 and Nordex N117/3000 turbines were obtained between 10177-11925 MWh/year and 9283-10954 MWh/year, respectively. Moreover, shape and scale parameters for each wind directions and annual energy generation values of each location have been calculated within the scope of this work.

Abstract:One of the primary trends in the technological growth of offshore wind turbines is the movement toward larger-rotor machines with higher hub height. Recently, offshore wind turbine sizes, especially hub height, rotor diameter, and nameplate capacity, have increased dramatically and are expected to increase further. This growth in offshore wind turbine size enhances the turbine power coefficient for the same wind speeds significantly and also led to the reductions of levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) and total installed cost (TIC) of the turbines. This work examines the growth in the nameplate size and capacity of offshore wind turbines installed in Europe through the years as new installations and total installations. Effects and results of this growth in nameplate size and capacity on the LCOE, TIC, wind farm capacity, turbine-specific power capacity, turbine capacity factor (CF), sea surface area needed per GW, and the number of turbines per GW are examined and discussed in detail. As a result, this study aims to contribute to the literature and provide technical and innovative information to turbine manufacturers by presenting various aspects of offshore wind turbine technology development in Europe. The rapid technological developments in this sector show that the average CF has increased from 42 to 44% in the last decade, and the LCOE value has reduced from 0.156 USD/kWh to 0.096 USD/kWh.
