Abstract:According to wind characteristics in the built environment,the possibility of wind energy utilization was represented,and then the main way of wind energy utilization were introduced which includes natural aeration and exhaust,and electricity generation by wind power.The research status and application examples of wind energy utilization in the built environment were summarized systematically,from four aspects such as simulation of wind in the built environment,performances of wind energy augmented in the built environment,suitable wind turbines designs and the benefit evaluation of wind power in the built environment,also their shortages were analyzed simply.On this basis,some pending problems are proposed,which can be a reference to the promotion and application of wind energy utilization technology in the built environment.

Renewable Energy and Environmental Sustainability

Abstract:Renewables today are the first-choice option for a modern power system. Wind and solar are now competitive with conventional sources and commanded a high percentage of investments in renewable power. The cost of wind turbines has fallen by nearly 1/3rd since 2009 and that of solar photovoltaic (PV) modules by 80%. The number of countries that held auctions to deploy renewables has increased (from 6 in 2005 to 67 countries in 2017) with a very large increase in global investment. Global cumulative installed wind power capacity had more than 645 GW by the first quarter of 2019. The paper reviews the recent developments in wind energy conversion systems technology and discusses future expectations. Offshore wind turbines are the most possible technology for future utilization and of this, floating wind turbines are to dominate with larger scales could reach three times the present introduced scales. This is to provide more than 20% of the global demand in 2030. The paper presents several case studies for each case and highlights the technological aspects that support each development. The most important design advancements are also discussed with a forecast of the future design expectation that will affect the wind power generation program.

Abstract:After harvesting energy from the wind for centuries, for a long period in history which started with the industrial revolution, wind power development has lagged behind due to the advent of other types of technologies based on fossil fuels and nuclear fission. It was not until the 20th century that technological developments in other fields revolutionized wind power conversion and ultimately led to modern wind turbine systems. This re-emergence of wind as a significant energy source is now encouraged by the need to meet increasing worldwide electricity demand and reduce the environmental impact caused by the conventional electricity generation technologies.Considerable progress in wind-power technology during the last decades has pushed it as an important supplier of grid-connected electricity in the worldwide energy picture. Today, wind turbines on the market show a variety of innovative concepts combined with proven technology for both generators and power electronics. But, there are still several technological challenges in wind power. Some are related to the development of utility-scale turbines of cheaper construction, transport and deployment, that may further reduce generation cost at both inland and offshore locations. Some others are related to finding practical and economical ways of harvesting wind energy at the small-scale level for isolated consumers or for distributed generation systems. The objective of this paper is to explore innovative concepts proposed in wind power that may help address these challenges by going beyond the classical evolutive-design process.

Abstract:The energy paradigms in many countries (e.g. Germany and Denmark) have experienced a significant change from fossil-based resources to clean renewables in the past few decades. The scenario of highly penetrated renewables is going to be further enhanced. This requires that the production, distribution and use of the energy should be as technological efficient as possible and incentives to save energy at the end-user should also be strengthened. In order to realize the transition smoothly and effectively, energy conversion systems, currently based on power electronics technology, will again play an essential role. Using highly efficient power electronics in power generation, power transmission/distribution and end-user application, together with advanced control solutions, can pave the way for renewable energies. In view of this, some of the most emerging renewable energies, e.g. wind energy and photovoltaic, which by means of power electronics are changing character as a major part in the electricity generation, are explored in this paper. Issues like technology development, implementation, power converter technologies, control of the systems, and synchronization are addressed. Special focuses are paid on the future trends in power electronics for those systems.

Abstract:The application of wind energy develops much more rapidly than the other renewable resources in the 21st century. It becomes the third core energy resources following oil and chemical fuels. China is rich in wind energy resources. Although there is still a lag between China and the developed countries on the usage of wind energy, the wind power industry in China is now in a new developing period. There are good prospects to develop the wind power generation in China in the future. The paper provided an overview of the current status and the future development of the wind power in China. Abstract:Despite common characterizations of modern wind energy technology as mature, there remains a persistent disconnect between the vast global wind energy resource—which is 20 times greater than total global power consumption—and the limited penetration of existing wind energy technologies as a means for electricity generation worldwide. We describe an approach to wind energy harvesting that has the potential to resolve this disconnect by geographically distributing wind power generators in a manner that more closely mirrors the physical resource itself. To this end, technology development is focused on large arrays of small wind turbines that can harvest wind energy at low altitudes by using new concepts of biology-inspired engineering. This approach dramatically extends the reach of wind energy, as smaller wind turbines can be installed in many places that larger systems cannot, especially in built environments. Moreover, they have lower visual, acoustic, and radar signatures, and they may pose significantly less risk to birds and bats. These features can be leveraged to attain cultural acceptance and rapid adoption of this new technology, thereby enabling significantly faster achievement of state and national renewable energy targets than with existing technology alone. Favorable economics stem from an orders-of-magnitude reduction in the number of components in a new generation of simple, mass-manufacturable (even 3D-printable), vertical-axis wind turbines. However, this vision can only be achieved by overcoming significant scientific challenges that have limited progress over the past three decades. The following essay summarizes our approach as well as the opportunities and challenges associated with it, with the aim of motivating a concerted effort in basic and applied research in this area.

Abstract:With the rapid economic development and huge amount of population, China is becoming one of the largest energy consumption countries in the world. This results in a heavy pressure on electricity supply in China. The potential wind energy storage is very large in China due to its large territory and nature conditions. Considering the energy-saving and environment factors, wind power, with its clean and renewable characteristic, has become a high priority of energy development in Chinese central government. Although China's wind power industry has achieved great achievements in the past 20 years, both opportunities and challenges coexist for the future development. Currently, the Chinese government is actively making relevant policies to guide wind power development moving toward a beneficial business and to promote the localisation of wind turbine generator manufacturing so as to reduce costs. Wind power is a new investment business around the globe as an alternative of traditional energy; China has also actively taken part in this worldwide trend. It is anticipated that by grasping the chance and speeding up the development, the future of wind energy in China is promising.

Abstract:In this chapter, the state-of-the-arts developments of renewable energy are reviewed in respect to the installed power and market share, where wind power and photovoltaic power generation are the main focuses due to the fast growing speed and large share of installed capacity. Some basic principles of operation, mission profiles, as well as power electronics solutions and corresponding controls are discussed respectively in the case of wind power and photovoltaic power systems. Finally a few development trends for renewable energy conversions are also given from a power electronics point of view. It is concluded that as the quick development of renewable energy, wind power and PV power both show great potential to be largely integrated into the power grid. Power electronics is playing essential role in both of the systems to achieve more controllable, efficient, and reliable energy production-which is crucial for the cost reduction and spread use of renewable energies, because their fluctuated and unpredicted features are un-preferred for the operation of the power grid. Meanwhile there are also some emerging challenges and considerations in the renewable energy conversion system, calling for more advanced controls as well as configurations of power electronics converter.

Sustainable Energy Technologies and Assessments

Abstract:Energy is an integral part of economic growth and social development. Renewable energy sources are naturally occurring, which can help in reducing the dependency on non-renewable resources. The increasing effects of climate change have led to the utilization of renewable energy resources for power generation, among which wind is one of the significant sources of power generation. It provides a reliable, sustainable, and environmentally friendly alternative contributing to national energy security in the current age of decreasing global reserves of non-renewable resources across the globe. This paper reviews the wind energy technologies used, mainly focusing on the types of turbines used and their future scope. Further, the paper briefly discusses certain future wind generation technologies, namely airborne, offshore, smart rotors, multi-rotors, and other small wind turbine technologies. It also briefly discusses ways to improve the efficiency of different turbine generation technologies, majorly non-conventional ideas of wind turbine technologies based on cross axis wind turbine (CAWT), vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT), magnetic-based wind turbine. Overall, the summarization of wind energy here consists of four aspects: (1) wind turbine structure, (2) wind power generation technologies, (3) wind energy assessment methodologies, (4) limitation of developed technologies and future scope of wind energy development.

Abstract:The existence of environmental concerns and constraints has led to a much greater necessity for the development of renewable energy resources. Wind energy resources are one of the most promising avenues for renewable energy generation, and the field has experienced significant technological innovation and growth over the past few years. This paper reviews various issues related to wind-power generation resources. Current trends, over the last two decades, of increasing wind turbine sizes, rated power-generation capacity, efficiencies, and the actual size of wind farm facilities are projected to continue. It is theorized that the current global installed capacity of wind power generation may increase from the current generation of 540 (2017) to 5800 GW by 2050. Wind energy potential, in terms of vertical wind speed profile, mean wind-speed distribution, turbulence effects and gust, are discussed in detail in this paper. A decreasing trend in the cost of initial capital investment and the levelized cost of energy (LCOE), for both onshore and offshore wind-power generation developments, are projected to continue, although this is regionally and economy-size dependent. Key challenges have been identified for the development of wind power generation in developed and under-developed countries going forward. New approaches/developments in the field and avenues for further research or actions that can be undertaken are also outlined in this paper. Materialization of such lines of actionsmay lead to an increase in global wind energy from its current level of around 4% of the electricity generation mix to roughly 40%.

Abstract:<p>Wind energy has gained significant support to be one of the primary sources of near-zero-emission energy systems. Based on the technological paradigm theory and employing a novel data analysis system (DAS), this paper provides an overview of wind energy technological developments. With key energy law and policy decisions highlighted, the visualization process clearly identified the three technological paradigmatic stages; competition, diffusion and shift; from which it is found that wind-based hybrid energy systems appear to give better promising trajectory in the future than wind energy technologies that rely only on onshore or offshore winds. However, with market maturation, the challenges associated with increasing share, energy storage, motivational conflicts, demand responses and optimal scheduling emerge and are expected to be resolved. From the paradigm shift investigation, a comprehensive sustainable framework for a six-stage hybrid wind-photovoltaic energy system is proposed. Recommendations on policy shifts to encourage technological innovation, regional differentiation, improve monitoring & evaluation systems and the implementation of smart grid are also given to address the incentives that need to be provided.</p>

Abstract:Wind energy, as a reliable, natural and renewable electrical power supply, produces no emissions and so it is an excellent alternative to conventional, more heavily polluting fuels in the long term based on the worldwide concern about the environment and energy supply. Wind energy resources in China are affluent, but its distribution are uneven, centralized, and far from both the utility and the high electricity demand markets. This made China's onshore wind power development have such characteristics as large scale, high centralization and far transmission, which is different with that in Europe, where the characteristics are even distribution, decentralized. In past two decades, considering the economic, technical and environmental benefits of wind power, China has given priority to its development. Besides the dramatic growth of large scale grid-connected wind power, household-scale wind power has been used most successfully in remote rural regions in China. Therefore, the development of wind power will be of great importance to alleviate the energy crisis and environmental pollution resulting from the rapid economic growth of China in the future. In this paper, the current development of wind energy utilization in China is investigated, and some critical barriers are discussed. Finally, the perspective of wind energy utilization is presented, where focuses are placed on seven wind power bases.

Abstract:The electrical energy consumption continues to grow and more applications will be based on electricity in the next decades. We can expect that more 60 % of all energy consumption will be converted and used as electricity. It is a demand that production, distribution and use of electrical energy are done as efficient as possible. Further, emerging climate changes argues to find future solutions which also are sustainable. Two major technologies will play important roles to solve parts of those future problems. One is the change the electrical power production from conventional, fossil (and short term) based energy sources to renewable energy sources. Another is to use high efficient power electronics in power generation, power transmission/distribution and end-user application. This paper discuss trends of the most emerging renewable energy sources, wind energy, which by means of power electronics is changing the future electrical infrastructure but also contributes steadily more to non-carbon based electricity production. Most focus is on the power electronics technologies used in wind turbine systems.

Abstract:Wind energy is a clean,abundant resource of renewable energy. It does not produce greenhouse gases. Economically and technically,the wind is a preferred alternative energy in the current days because of the depletion of mineral resources and deteriorating environment. So the development and utilization of wind energy are accelerating all over the world now. In this article,the causes and characteristics of the wind are described,the valuation method of wind energy reserves and wind energy in China and in the world are presented. In the mean time,the wind power technology,trends and prospects are focused on. In addition,the use of wind energy technology and the present situation are introduced,such as wind power water-lifting,wind-aided sailing and wind power heating.

Abstract:Wind power is still the most promising renewable energy in the year of 2013. The wind turbine system (WTS) started with a few tens of kilowatt power in the 1980s. Now, multimegawatt wind turbines are widely installed even up to 6–8 MW. There is a widespread use of wind turbines in the distribution networks and more and more wind power stations, acting as power plants, are connected directly to the transmission networks. As the grid penetration and power level of the wind turbines increase steadily, the wind power starts to have significant impacts to the power grid system. Therefore, more advanced generators, power electronic systems, and control solutions have to be introduced to improve the characteristics of the wind power plant and make it more suitable to be integrated into the power grid. Meanwhile, there are also some emerging technology challenges, which need to be further clarified and investigated. This paper gives an overview and discusses some development trends in the technologies used for wind power systems. First, the developments of technology and market are generally discussed. Next, several state-of-the-art wind turbine concepts, as well as the corresponding power electronic converters and control structures, are reviewed, respectively. Furthermore, grid requirements and the technology challenges for the future WTS are also addressed.

Abstract:This paper is on the push and choice for a greener and environmentally sustainable energy, particularly wind energy. A single wind turbine produces a limited amount of carbon emissions throughout its lifecycle. By taking a broader view, wind energy farms (or wind farms) have collectively a greater impact upon the environment and economy. Recent research on wind farms tends to focus on energy-generated modelling for the cushioning and mitigation of the climate-change malady, hence to enable accurate prediction of power generation. This paper presents an approach to wind energy, with respect to: (i) carbon emissions and intensity; (ii) potential energy production; (iii) return on economic investment; and (iv) payback-time from an early design perspective. The overall contribution of this work is to develop an approach to enable the selection of “greener” options represented in renewable energy sources, particularly the wind energy, with the focus on economic feasibility assessment and environmental impacts. This study represents, to top-management, industrialists (such as wind-turbines’ manufacturers), environmentalists, and engineers, as well as to wind-energy services’ providers, research scientists, and policy- and decision-makers, an assessment of the choices and options of wind-energy provision and in investing in its industry and development, as a clean and sustainable technology to generate electric power. In addition, the potential of using wind energy and other kinds of renewable energy sources for electric power generation is investigated in this study, with respect to the Continent of Africa, as a “case study”, in terms of opportunities and challenges.
