Abstract:In Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) area, medical records are the objective record of a doctor's diagnosis and treatment and they are the basis of the TCM development. However, existing medical records of TCM are derived from books, medical cases, Web and most of them lack the categories information. In this paper, we propose a text classification method for the TCM medical record based on cross-domain topic model. First, we transform the physical books into the digital documents, then tokenize and filter the documents with domain lexicons to achieve the significative sequences of words which largely maintain the topics of original documents. Second, we use the cross domain topic model named Topic Relevance Weighting Model(TRWM) to generate the features. Finally, the generated features are leveraged for the medical records classification and compared with the baselines. The experimental results validate the effectiveness of our method.

Abstract:Text classification is one of the fundamental tasks in text mining. In the medical domain, there have been a number of studies on text classification in modern medicine clinical notes written in English. However, very limited text classification research has been conducted on clinical notes written in Chinese, especially traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) clinical records. The goal of this study was to investigate features and machine learning classification algorithms for TCM clinical text classification. We collected 7,037 TCM clinical records of famous TCM doctors as our dataset, and investigated the effects of different types of features and classification algorithms. Additionally, we proposed a novel method to combine deep learning text representation with TCM domain knowledge, which results in the best classification performance.

Abstract:In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the prescription is the crystallization of clinical experience of doctors, which is the main way to cure diseases in China for thousands of years. Clinical cases, on the other hand, describe how doctors diagnose and prescribe a prescription. In this paper, we propose a framework which mines the treatment pattern in TCM clinical cases by using probabilistic topic model and TCM domain knowledge. The framework can reflect principle rules in TCM and improve function prediction of a new prescription. We evaluate our model on real world TCM clinical cases. The experiment validates the effectiveness of our method.

Abstract:Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is a medical system with over 3000 years of continuous practice experience and refinement through treatment observations. The TCM pattern classification (also defined as Syndrome or Zheng differentiation) and treatment of ill health is the basis and the key concept of the TCM theory. All diagnostic and therapeutic methods in TCM are based on the differentiation of TCM pattern. TCM pattern can be considered as the TCM theoretical interpretation of the symptom profiles. Pattern classification is often used as a guideline in disease classification in TCM practice and has been recently incorporated with biomedical diagnosis, resulting in the increasing research interest of TCM pattern among various disciplines of integrative medicine. This paper describes the historical evolution on the integration of the TCM pattern classification and disease diagnosis in biomedicine, the methodology of pattern classification for diseases, efficacy of TCM practice with integration of TCM pattern classification and biomedical disease diagnosis, and the biological basis of TCM pattern. TCM pattern classification, which may lead to new findings in biological sciences, was also discussed.

Abstract:Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has demonstrated unique advantages in the prevention and treatment of chronic and complex diseases such as cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases and diabetes. It has also played a major role in the fight against sudden infectious diseases such as COVID-19. Therefore, how to quickly identify effective constituents from the complex system is the most critical issue in the study of modernization of TCM. Based on this, this article summarizes the rapid identification strategies and multiscale screening models, which provides ideas for analyzing the scientific connotation and explaining the mechanism of TCM.

Abstract:Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been extensively used as a mainstay for treating various pathologies. Combing the pharmacology and systems biology approaches, the network pharmacology (NP) approach was developed to predict the probable mechanism underlying the therapeutic effect of TCM. However, approaches solely based on NP cannot effectively elucidate the curative mechanism in a holistic and reliable manner due to limitations in NP-based methods and complexity of TCM components. Thus, integration strategies combining NP with other approaches are increasingly being used. Since the interdisciplinary research in TCM has received much attention in the advent of the big data era of which the NP-based integration strategy is broadly used, the strategy is clearly elaborated in the present review. We summarized several NP-based integration strategies and their applications in TCM studies, including multi-omics approach, gut microbiota study, chemical information analysis, data-mining, and network toxicology study.

Abstract:The identification of Chinese traditional medicine is a difficult subject in pharmacology. The development of chemical measurement and pattern recognition make the chemical pattern recognition possible. In this paper a new chemical pattern recognition method is proposed, in which a simple method named corresponding-peak distance calculating is used to compute the distance between samples for nearest neighbor (NN) classifier, and genetic algorithm is used to optimize the parameters of NN classifier. With the proposed method in this paper, experiments are carried out on chromatogram data of Panax. The results indicate that the method can identify the medicine material of different harvest time or habitats, furthermore, this method which combines the pattern matching, genetic algorithm and NN classifier is robust, accurate and easy to be implemented.

Abstract:Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is an essential part of the Chinese medical system and is recognized by the World Health Organization as an important alternative medicine. As an important part of TCM, TCM diagnosis is a method to understand a patient's illness, analyze its state, and identify syndromes. In the long-term clinical diagnosis practice of TCM, four fundamental and effective diagnostic methods of inspection, auscultation-olfaction, inquiry, and palpation (IAOIP) have been formed. However, the diagnostic information in TCM is diverse, and the diagnostic process depends on doctors' experience, which is subject to a high-level subjectivity. At present, the research on the automated diagnosis of TCM based on machine learning is booming. Machine learning, which includes deep learning, is an essential part of artificial intelligence (AI), which provides new ideas for the objective and AI-related research of TCM. This paper aims to review and summarize the current research status of machine learning in TCM diagnosis. First, we review some key factors for the application of machine learning in TCM diagnosis, including data, data preprocessing, machine learning models, and evaluation metrics. Second, we review and summarize the research and applications of machine learning methods in TCM IAOIP and the synthesis of the four diagnostic methods. Finally, we discuss the challenges and research directions of using machine learning methods for TCM diagnosis.

Abstract:MOTIVATION:Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is gaining increasing attention with the emergence of integrative medicine and personalized medicine, characterized by pattern differentiation on individual variance and treatments based on natural herbal synergism. Investigating the effectiveness and safety of the potential mechanisms of TCM and the combination principles of drug therapies will bridge the cultural gap with Western medicine and improve the development of integrative medicine. Dealing with rapidly growing amounts of biomedical data and their heterogeneous nature are two important tasks among modern biomedical communities. Bioinformatics, as an emerging interdisciplinary field of computer science and biology, has become a useful tool for easing the data deluge pressure by automating the computation processes with informatics methods. Using these methods to retrieve, store and analyze the biomedical data can effectively reveal the associated knowledge hidden in the data, and thus promote the discovery of integrated information. Recently, these techniques of bioinformatics have been used for facilitating the interactional effects of both Western medicine and TCM. The analysis of TCM data using computational technologies provides biological evidence for the basic understanding of TCM mechanisms, safety and efficacy of TCM treatments. At the same time, the carrier and targets associated with TCM remedies can inspire the rethinking of modern drug development. This review summarizes the significant achievements of applying bioinformatics techniques to many aspects of the research in TCM, such as analysis of TCM-related '-omics' data and techniques for analyzing biological processes and pharmaceutical mechanisms of TCM, which have shown certain potential of bringing new thoughts to both sides.

Abstract:The efficacy of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) treatments for Western medicine (WM) diseases relies heavily on the proper classification of patients into TCM syndrome types. The authors developed a data-driven method for solving the classification problem, where syndrome types were identified and quantified based on statistical patterns detected in unlabeled symptom survey data. The new method is a generalization of latent class analysis (LCA), which has been widely applied in WM research to solve a similar problem, i.e., to identify subtypes of a patient population in the absence of a gold standard. A well-known weakness of LCA is that it makes an unrealistically strong independence assumption. The authors relaxed the assumption by first detecting symptom co-occurrence patterns from survey data and used those statistical patterns instead of the symptoms as features for LCA. This new method consists of six steps: data collection, symptom co-occurrence pattern discovery, statistical pattern interpretation, syndrome identification, syndrome type identification and syndrome type classification. A software package called Lantern has been developed to support the application of the method. The method was illustrated using a data set on vascular mild cognitive impairment.

Abstract:Objective: This study analyzed the data of the medical cases in the book, "Clinical Guide Medical records" using a data mining method, to provide a reference for Ye Tianshi's academic thoughts. Methods: We used the web version of the ancient and modern medical records cloud platform to complete distribution statistics, association rules, cluster analysis, and complex network analysis of all the medical records in the "Clinical Guide Medical records." These methods were used to summarize the baseline data and to identify the core relationship between Chinese medicine diseases and Chinese medicine, as well as the Chinese medicine Classification. Results: A total of 2572 medical records, 3136 visits, and 2879 prescriptions of 1127 traditional Chinese medicines were included in this study. The most common diseases (such as hematemesis), syndromes (such as liver–stomach disharmony), symptoms (such as rapid pulse), disease sites (such as gastric cavity), disease properties (such as Yang deficiency), treatment methods (such as activating Yang), and traditional Chinese medicines (such as Poria cocos) were identified. Furthermore, medicines with a warm, flat, cold, sweet, or bitter taste with its effects on the lungs, spleen, and heart were the most common. The observed effects of the drugs included clearing dampness, promoting diuresis, and strengthening the spleen. The association analysis showed that the associations between TCM diseases and traditional Chinese medicines that had a high confidence were "phlegm and fluid retention–Poria cocos," "diarrhea–Poria cocos," etc. The cluster analysis showed that traditional Chinese medicines were classified into five categories. The complex network showed the core relationship between nine high-frequency diseases and nine high-frequency traditional Chinese medicine. Conclusion: This study revealed the most important relationships between traditional Chinese medicines diseases and traditional Chinese medicines and classified the most used traditional Chinese medicines. These findings may help the coming generations of doctors to make accurate diagnoses and treat patients effectively and to improve the clinicians' efficacy in clinical diagnosis and treatment.

Abstract:Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been used for thousands of years and has been proven to be effective at treating many complicated illnesses with minimal side effects. The application and advancement of TCM are, however, constrained by the absence of objective measuring standards due to its relatively abstract diagnostic methods and syndrome differentiation theories. Ongoing developments in machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL), specifically in computer vision (CV) and natural language processing (NLP), offer novel opportunities to modernize TCM by exploring the profound connotations of its theory. This review begins with an overview of the ML and DL methods employed in TCM; this is followed by practical instances of these applications. Furthermore, extensive discussions emphasize the mature integration of ML and DL in TCM, such as tongue diagnosis, pulse diagnosis, and syndrome differentiation treatment, highlighting their early successful application in the TCM field. Finally, this study validates the accomplishments and addresses the problems and challenges posed by the application and development of TCM powered by ML and DL. As ML and DL techniques continue to evolve, modern technology will spark new advances in TCM.

Abstract:Ethnopharmacological relevance Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), an ancient health system, faces significant research challenges due to the complexity of its active components and targets, as well as a historical lack of detailed annotation. However, recent advances in omics technologies have begun to unravel these complexities, providing a more informed and nuanced understanding of TCM's therapeutic potential in contemporary healthcare. Aim of the review This review summarizes the application of omics technologies in TCM modernization, emphasizing components analysis, quality control, biomarker discovery, target identification, and treatment optimization. In addition, future perspectives on using omics for precision TCM treatment are also discussed. Materials and methods We have explored several databases (including PubMed, ClinicalTrials, Google Scholar, and Web of Science) to review related articles, focusing on Traditional Chinese Medicine, Omics Strategy, Precision Medicine, Biomarkers, Quality Control, and Molecular Mechanisms. Paper selection criteria involved English grammar, publication date, high citations, and broad applicability, exclusion criteria included low credibility, non-English publications, and those full-text inaccessible ones. Results TCM and the popularity of Chinese herbal medicines (CHMs) are gaining increasing attention worldwide. This is driven, in part, by a large number of technologies, especially omics strategy, which are aiding the modernization of TCM. They contribute to the quality control of CHMs, the identification of cellular targets, discovery of new drugs and, most importantly, the understanding of their mechanisms of action. Conclusion To fully integrate TCM into modern medicine, further development of robust omics strategies is essential. This vision includes personalized medicine, backed by advanced computational power and secure data infrastructure, to facilitate global acceptance and seamless integration of TCM practices.

[Principle and Application of Chinese Medicine Syndrome Differentiation and Disease Classification].

Abstract:Taxonomy of diseases is usable in Western medicine and also in Chinese medicine, but with different measures of sorting, i.e. disease classification in Western medicine and the syndrome differentiation in Chinese medicine. Actually, an integrative mode of the above two measures is already the chief mode of sorting applied in clinical practice of Chinese medicine and integrative medicine. The two measures are introduced in this paper, and the integrative mode is deeply analyzed as well. Its biomedical interpretation and protocol are operational explained, and its important values, involving clinical practice for assessments of therapeutic efficacy, drug action and safety; new drug research and development; medical innovation; and research on internal relation among diseases, are discussed with illustration. The authors indicated that the integrative taxonomic mode of disease classification and syndrome differentiation is an important theoretical representation for mutual-supplementing of Chinese medicine and Western medicine in integrative medicine, also the important measure and approach for developing Chinese medicine and innovating biomedicine, and it is meaningful in both theoretical guidance and actual clinical practice.

Abstract:Precision medicine has received growing recognition from clinicians, health systems, and the pharmaceutical industry, as well as patients and policymakers, which will leave a major impact on the practice of medicine. Interestingly, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) provides personalized medical treatment based on the theory of TCM characterized by holistic concept and pattern differentiation. This, to some extent, is similar to the personalized medical treatment of precision medicine. In China, TCM as well as Western medicine (WM) plays an important role in healthcare. In this article, the authors summarized the influence of precision medicine on current medical directions, the advantages of TCM in disease treatment, further development of precision medicine and the strategies for integration of TCM and WM under this new treatment approach. In addition, the authors discuss the perspective of precise medical diagnosis and treatment, precise prevention, and the complementary advantages of the integration of TCM and WM. Finally, the authors give their perspectives on the challenges and opportunities presented by precision medicine, in the context of further research toward the integration of TCM and WM.

Abstract:As one of the traditional cultures of our country, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has received more and more attention. As a valuable asset inherited from ancient times, TCM medical cases carry the core knowledge content of TCM. Accurate medical case classification is an important part of establishing a correct medical case diagnosis and treatment system, and is also an important part of medical assistance system. This paper proposes a new model to effectively classify medical cases. First, the multi-layer semantic expansion method is used to increase the semantic information of TCM medical cases in instance layer and attribute layer. Then, the character-level Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (Bert) model is used as a language model for text representation of the medical cases, and the results are as the input of the deep learning models. Finally, the optimized Text-Convolutional Neural Network (Text-CNN) model is used to classify TCM medical cases, and the reliability and accuracy of the whole model are verified through the comparison with the result of other text representation and classification methods.

Abstract:<p>The difficulty of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) researches lies in the complexity of components, metabolites, and bioactivities. For a long time, there has been a lack of connections among the three parts, which is not conducive to the systematic elucidation of TCM effectiveness. To overcome this problem, a classification-based methodology for simplifying TCM researches was refined from literature in the past 10 years (2011-2020). The theoretical basis of this methodology is set theory, and its core concept is classification. Its starting point is that "although TCM may contain hundreds of compounds, the vast majority of these compounds are structurally similar". The methodology is composed by research strategies for components, metabolites and bioactivities of TCM, which are the three main parts of the review. Technical route, key steps and difficulty are introduced in each part. Two perspectives are highlighted in this review: set theory is a theoretical basis for all strategies from a conceptual perspective, and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) is a common tool for all strategies from a technical perspective. The significance of these strategies is to simplify complex TCM researches, integrate isolated TCM researches, and build a bridge between traditional medicines and modern medicines. Potential research hotspots in the future, such as discovery of bioactive ingredients from TCM metabolites, are also discussed. The classification-based methodology is a summary of research experience in the past 10 years. We believe it will definitely provide support and reference for the following TCM researches.</p>
