Abstract:This paper addresses the design of a large area, high resolution, networked pressure sensing floor with primary application in movement-based human-computer interaction (M-HCI). To meet the sensing needs of an M-HCI system, several design challenges need to be overcome. Firstly, high frame rate and low latency are required to ensure real-time human computer interaction, even in the presence of large sensing area (for unconstrained movement in the capture space) and high resolution (to support detailed analysis of pressure patterns). The optimization of floor system frame rate and latency is a challenge. Secondly, in many cases of M-HCI there are only a small number of subjects on the floor and a large portion of the floor is not active. Proper data compression for efficient data transmission is also a challenge. Thirdly, locations of disjoint active floor regions are useful features in many M-HCI applications. Reliable clustering and tracking of active disjoint floor regions poses as a challenge. Finally, to allow M-HCI using multiple communication channels, such as gesture, pose and pressure distributions, the pressure sensing floor needs to be integrable with other sensing modalities to create a smart multimodal environment. Fast and accurate alignment of floor sensing data in space and time with other sensing modalities is another challenge. In our research, we fully addressed the above challenges. The pressure sensing floor we developed has a sensing area of about 180 square feet, with a sensor resolution of 6.25 sensels/in(2). The system frame rate is up to 43 Hz with average latency of 25 ms. A simple but efficient data compression scheme is in place. We have also developed a robust clustering and tracking procedure for disjoint active floor regions using the mean-shift algorithm. The pressure sensing floor can be seamlessly integrated with a marker based motion capture system with accurate temporal and spatial alignment. Furthermore, the modular and scalable structure of the sensor floor allows for easy installation to real rooms of irregular shape. The pressure sensing floor system described in this paper forms an important stepping stone towards the creation of a smart environment with context aware data processing algorithms which finds extensive applications beyond M-HCI, e,g. diagnosing gait pathologies and evaluation of treatment.

Abstract:Current developments in flexible sensors for epidermal pressure monitoring lack a fully integrated multimodal solution due to challenges such as crosstalk and complex integration processes. Here, a crosstalk-free multimodal sensor is presented by simple vertical lamination and spraying. Except for integrating the multimodal sensor, the device is equipped with a signal conditioning circuit, enhancing its portability. Importantly, each sensor is sensitive only to its specific stimulus but not to other stimuli, enabling signal decoupling without complex algorithms. The pressure sensor exhibits enhanced sensitivity (eight times greater than unstructured designs), and the temperature sensor shows a high sensitivity of 60.64 U / degrees C and a linearity of R2 2 = 0.9982 below 160 degrees C. degrees C. Meanwhile, the capacitance of the humidity sensor varies by 72 pF as humidity increases from 15% to 95%. The high integration and simple fabrication process provides a promising design concept for application in pressure ulcer prevention and telemedicine.

Abstract:This paper explores the design of a reconfigurable large-area high-resolution pressure sensing floor to help study human dance movement. By measuring the pressure of a user interacting with the system, our device is able to provide real-time knowledge about both the location of the performer on the floor as well as the amount and distribution of force being exerted on the floor. This system has been designed to closely integrate and synchronize with external systems including marker-based motion capture systems, audio-sensing equipment and video-sensing technology, thus allowing for robust multimodal sensing of a subject in the integrated environment. Furthermore, the mats comprising the floor can be readily re-arranged in order to allow for a large number of configurations. Some other possible applications of the pressure sensing floor include virtual reality based entertainment systems or video game control interfaces as well as rehabilitation projects for disabled people with foot or motor-control disorders.

Abstract:The development and utilization of flexible piezoresistive sensors based on bionic nanomaterials have garnered considerable attention due to their broad potential in various domains. However, the key to their enhanced performance lies in incorporating microstructures and conductive coatings, which maximize initial resistance and minimize resistance upon pressure application, thereby amplifying the change in resistance signal. In this study, we draw inspiration from the microconvex structure observed on the skin of crocodiles and propose a bionic-structured flexible pressure sensor. The sensor is fabricated using nanocomposites comprising multiwalled carbon nanotubes, silicone rubber, and carbon nanofiber in conjunction with a three-dimensional (3D)-printed bionic structural mold. Sensor structure is similar to a sandwich structure with three layers: a flexible substrate layer, a sensing layer, and an interdigital electrode layer. Our sensor exhibits improved pressure-sensing capabilities, characterized by rapid response and recovery times (25 ms), a wide pressure detection range (0-80 kPa), minimal hysteresis (2.44%), high sensitivity (0.4311 kPa(-1) within the 0-10 kPa range), and fine stability (withstanding 6000 cycles under varying pressures). Notably, this sensor has an efficient sensing ability, long-term stability, and good waterproofing properties, expanding its potential applications in human-computer interaction, motion monitoring, intelligent robotics, and underwater rescue operations.

Abstract:Considering the complexity of human-product contacting interface design,a data mapping model was established to convert the experimental data to surface shapes based on the pressure distribution map.Energy optimization method was applied to conduct surface modeling,and high quality contacting surface was generated by optimizing the pressure distribution maps.Technical plans of the mapping model constructing and experiment methods were discussed.The model was tested in a seat design example.Results revealed that the method had great potential and prospect in surface design of ergonomics.

Abstract:<p>Mimicry of the somatosensory system in the human skin via electronic devices exhibits broad applications in intelligent robotics and wearable electronics. Here, we report a novel biomimetic flexible dual-mode pressure sensor that is based on the interlocked piezoelectric and piezoresistive films with pyramid microstructures. The sensitivity of the sensor is significantly enhanced because of the induced larger stain variation along the thickness direction of the former piezoelectric film and increased contact area in the latter piezoresistive film. The synergistic effect of the piezoelectric and piezoresistive responses to stimuli also allows the dual-mode sensor to detect over broad pressure and frequency ranges. The analysis of these signals can deconvolute multiple aspects of the complex stimuli loading processes, including their loading direction, rate, magnitude, and duration. As a proof-of-concept demonstration, the dual-mode pressure sensor is successfully integrated with manipulators and human bodies to decode the complex and delicate picking processes and human motions, respectively. When combined with the other sensing modalities, the multifunctional dual-mode pressure sensor delivers new application opportunities in intelligent soft robotics and human-machine interfaces.</p>

Abstract:Multimodal tactile sensors are a crucial part of intelligent human‐machine interaction and collaboration. Simultaneous detection of proximity, pressure, and temperature on a single sensor can greatly promote the safety, interactivity and compactness of interaction systems. However, severe signal interference and complex decoupling algorithm hinder the actual applications. Here, we report a flexible optoelectronic multimodal sensor capable of detecting and decoupling proximity/pressure/temperature by integrating a light waveguide and an interdigital electrode into a compact fibrous sensor. Negligible signal interference is realized by combining heterogeneous sensing mechanisms of optics and electronics, which encodes proximity into capacitance, pressure into light intensity and temperature into resistance. The sensor exhibited a large sensing distance of 225 mm with fast responses for proximity detection, a pressure sensitivity of 0.42 N−1, and a temperature sensitivity of 7%/°C. As a proof of concept, the doll equipped with the sensor can accurately discriminate and detect various stimuli, thus achieving safe and immersive interactions with the user. Abstract:Flexible pressure sensors offer more significant advantages than rigid sensors in various applications, including human-computer interaction, medical health, and robot touch. However, this also places more stringent demands on the materials used. For example, the materials must be thin and soft enough to fit onto the surface of the human skin or be implanted into the body while also exhibiting good biocompatibility and matching the mechanical properties of biological tissues. Regarding device performance, flexible pressure sensor design primarily focuses on enhancing sensitivity, response time, detection limit, and stability. Researchers have recently been expanding these sensors' pressure response range, pressure resolution, spatial resolution, and tensile performance, which will further broaden their potential applications. This review provides an overview of the recent classification of flexible pressure sensors, covering their sensing principle, sensing performance, and future application prospects.

Abstract:Immersive human–machine interaction relies on comprehensive sensing and feedback systems, which enable transmission of multiple pieces of information. However, the integration of increasing numbers of feedback actuators and sensors causes a severe issue in terms of system complexity. In this work, we propose a pressure-sensing and feedback glove that enables multi-dimensional pressure sensing and feedback with a minimalist design of the functional units. The proposed glove consists of modular strain and pressure sensors based on films of liquid metal microchannels and coin vibrators. Strain sensors located at the finger joints can simultaneously project the bending motion of the individual joint into the virtual space or robotic hand. For subsequent tactile interactions, the design of two symmetrically distributed pressure sensors and vibrators at the fingertips possesses capabilities for multi-directional pressure sensing and feedback by evaluating the relationship of the signal variations between two sensors and tuning the feedback intensities of two vibrators. Consequently, both dynamic and static multi-dimensional pressure communication can be realized, and the vibrational actuation can be monitored by a liquid-metal-based sensor via a triboelectric sensing mechanism. A demonstration of object interaction indicates that the proposed glove can effectively detect dynamic force in varied directions at the fingertip while offering the reconstruction of a similar perception via the haptic feedback function. This device introduces an approach that adopts a minimalist design to achieve a multi-functional system, and it can benefit commercial applications in a more cost-effective way.

Abstract:From industrial exoskeletons to implantable medical devices, robots that interact closely with people are poised to improve every aspect of our lives. Yet designing these systems is very challenging; humans are incredibly complex and, in many cases, we respond to robotic devices in ways that cannot be modelled or predicted with sufficient accuracy. A new approach, human-in-the-loop optimization, can overcome these challenges by systematically and empirically identifying the device characteristics that result in the best objective performance for a specific user and application. This approach has enabled substantial improvements in human–robot performance in research settings and has the potential to speed development and enhance products. In this Perspective, we describe methods for applying human-in-the-loop optimization to new human–robot interaction problems, addressing each key decision in a variety of contexts. We also identify opportunities to develop new optimization techniques and answer underlying scientific questions. We anticipate that our readers will advance human-in-the-loop optimization and use it to design robotic devices that truly enhance the human experience.

Abstract:Flexible, wearable pressure sensors provide a convenient, timely, and portable solution for human motion detection. However, there is still a lack of reports on the synergistic effect of multidimensional hybrid polymer nanocomposites for modulating the sensor's key performance indexes. Herein, we present a cost-effective and scalable approach to preparing multidimensional hybrid polymer composites for piezoresistive pressure sensors. Composite charge-transfer paths and contact types are presented for the first time and analyzed in relation to the sensor sensitivity and linearity. The sensor has good characteristics, such as 0 ∼ 70 kPa range, 369.39 kPa −1 sensitivity, a minimum resolving power of 18 Pa and 68 ms, and 76 ms response and recovery times, owing to the interconnecting porous structure of MS and the synergistic effect of the composites. The sensor exhibited a stable piezoresistive response and good reproducibility over 9000 + cycles. The sensor was then attached to different parts of the human body and evaluated for its ability to detect various human movements, including speech and elbow flexion. Finally, a prototype haptic sensing array and a prototype force measurement platform based on these pressure sensors were demonstrated.

Abstract:Artificial skins or flexible pressure sensors that mimic human cutaneous mechanoreceptors transduce tactile stimuli to quantitative electrical signals. Conventional trial-and-error designs for such devices follow a forward structure-to-property routine, which is usually time-consuming and determines one possible solution in one run. Data-driven inverse design can precisely target desired functions while showing far higher productivity, however, it is still absent for flexible pressure sensors because of the difficulties in acquiring a large amount of data. Here, we report a property-to-structure inverse design of flexible pressure sensors, exhibiting a significantly greater efficiency than the conventional routine. We use a reduced-order model that analytically constrains the design scope and an iterative "jumping-selection" method together with a surrogate model that enhances data screening. As an exemplary scenario, hundreds of solutions that overcome the intrinsic signal saturation have been predicted by the inverse method, validating for a variety of material systems. The success in property design on multiple indicators demonstrates that the proposed inverse design is an efficient and powerful tool to target multifarious applications of flexible pressure sensors, which can potentially advance the fields of intelligent robots, advanced healthcare, and human-machine interfaces.

Abstract:Human–machine interfaces (HMIs) are widely studied to understand the human biomechanics and/or physiology and the interaction between humans and machines/robots. The conventional rigid or invasive HMIs that record/send information from/to human bodies have significant disadvantages in practice for long-term, portable, and comfortable usages. To better adapt to natural soft skins, soft HMIs have been designed to deform into arbitrary shapes, and their bendable, stretchable, compressible and twistable properties offer a huge potential in future personalized applications. This paper presents a survey on various soft HMIs in terms of design, sensing, stimulation as well as their applications. Specifically, tactile/motion/bio-potential sensors are categorized for recording various data from human bodies, while stimulators are discussed for information feedback and motion activation to human bodies. It is anticipated that soft HMIs will promote the interaction among humans, machines/robots and environment to achieve desired coexisting-cooperative-cognitive function in a robot system, named as Tri-Co Robot, for the human-centered applications, such as rehabilitation, medical monitoring and human–robot cooperation.
Programmable and Ultrasensitive Haptic Interfaces Enabling Closed‐Loop Human–Machine Interactions

Abstract:Carbon nanotube and methylcellulose are combined to achieve complementary advantages for preparing sensitive composite material with high electrical property and high stability. Through flexible transfer technology, a cross‐scale architecture design strategy with the sensitive composite material is proposed to construct high‐performance haptic interface. A wireless pressure‐data interactive glove assembled with the haptic interfaces efficiently realizes free, round‐the‐clock, and closed‐loop interactions. Intuitive, efficient, and unconstrained interactions require human–machine interfaces (HMIs) to accurately recognize users' manipulation intents. Susceptibility to interference and conditional usage mode of HMIs will lead to poor experiences that limit their great interaction potential. Herein, a programmable and ultrasensitive haptic interface enabling closed‐loop human–machine interactions is reported. A cross‐scale architecture design strategy is proposed to fabricate the haptic interface, which optimizes the hierarchical contact process. The synergistic optimization of the cross‐scale architecture between carbon nanotubes and the multiscale sensing structure realizes a haptic interface with ultrahigh sensitivity and a wide detection range of 15.1 kPa−1 and 180 kPa, which are improved by more than 900% over the performance of the common interface. The rapid response time of <5 ms and the limit of detection of 8 Pa of the haptic interface far surpass the somatosensory perception of human skin, which enables the haptic interface to accurately recognize interactive intents. A wireless pressure‐data interactive glove (wireless PDI glove) is designed and realizes a round‐the‐clock operation, noise immunity, and efficient interactive control, which perfectly compensate for the flaws of typical vision and voice recognition modes.

Abstract:In modern times, the collaboration between humans and machines increasingly rises, combining their respective benefits. The direct physical support causes interaction forces in human-machine interfaces, whereas their form determines both the effectiveness and comfort of the collaboration. However, their correct detection requires various sensor characteristics and remains challenging. Thus, this paper presents a developed low-cost sensor pad working with a silicone capsule and a piezoresistive pressure sensor. Its measurement accuracy is validated in both an isolated testing environment and a laboratory study with four test subjects (gender-balanced), and an application integrated in interfaces of an active upper-body exoskeleton. In the material-testing machine, it becomes apparent that the sensor pad generally features the capability of reliably determining normal forces on its surface until a certain threshold. This is also proven in the real application, where the measurement data of three sensor pads spatially embedded in the exoskeletal interface are compared to the data of an installed multi-axis load cell and a high-resolution flexible pressure map. Here, the consideration of three sensor pads potentially enables detection of exoskeletal support on the upper arm as well as "poor" fit conditions such as uneven pressure distributions that recommend immediate system adjustments for ergonomic improvements.
Flexible Pressure Sensors Tuned by Interface Structure Design – Numerical and Experimental Study

Abstract:Flexible pressure sensors have aroused wide research interest because they can be conformably attached to various irregular surfaces. At the present, it is still challenge to adjust the sensitivity and response range of resistive pressure sensors for practical uses. To uncover the insights of sensing ability, the surface textures are designed with pyramids of different sizes and density distributions for finite element analyses and experimental studies. The results show that the initial contact area has substantial effects on the sensitivity while the structure dimensions are proportional to the ability of sensing range. Using these design strategies, the sensor with the highest sensitivity (18.4 kPa-1) is constructed by the structures with gradient height distribution crossing the sensing area. The obtained sensitivity is among the highest performed resistive pressure sensors in the category. The sensitivity and response range of the sensor can be adjusted by changing the density and size of the pyra-mids. In addition, the flexible sensor based on PDMS elastomer and MWCNTs/PDMS conductor also reacts fast (less than 200 ms) when sensed a pressure change. Furthermore, the flexible resistive pressure sensors are highly reproducible and stable through the 5000 cycles repeated pressure stress without the sign of degradation. In application front, the sensors can quickly and accurately identify tactile signals and haptic signals at different frequencies under different pressures. The pressure sensors applied this design strategy are suitable for wearable electronics in human health care with the biocompatible materials with the flexible and comfortable natures.
Integration of 3D Printed Flexible Pressure Sensors into Physical Interfaces for Wearable Robots

Abstract:Sensing pressure at the physical interface between the robot and the human has important implications for wearable robots. On the one hand, monitoring pressure distribution can give valuable benefits on the aspects of comfortability and safety of such devices. Additionally, on the other hand, they can be used as a rich sensory input to high level interaction controllers. However, a problem is that the commercial availability of this technology is mostly limited to either low-cost solutions with poor performance or expensive options, limiting the possibilities for iterative designs. As an alternative, in this manuscript we present a three-dimensional (3D) printed flexible capacitive pressure sensor that allows seamless integration for wearable robotic applications. The sensors are manufactured using additive manufacturing techniques, which provides benefits in terms of versatility of design and implementation. In this study, a characterization of the 3D printed sensors in a test-bench is presented after which the sensors are integrated in an upper arm interface. A human-in-the-loop calibration of the sensors is then shown, allowing to estimate the external force and pressure distribution that is acting on the upper arm of seven human subjects while performing a dynamic task. The validation of the method is achieved by means of a collaborative robot for precise force interaction measurements. The results indicate that the proposed sensors are a potential solution for further implementation in human–robot interfaces.
