Abstract:Haptic interaction plays an important role in the virtual reality technology, which let a person not only view the 3D virtual environment but also realistically touch the virtual environment. As a key part of haptic interaction, force feedback has become an essential function for the haptic interaction. Therefore, multi-dimensional force sensors are widely used in the fields of virtual reality and augmented reality. In this paper, some conventional multi-dimensional force sensors based on different measurement principles, such as resistive, capacitive, piezoelectric, are briefly introduced. Then the mechanical structures of the elastic body of multi-dimensional force sensors are reviewed. It is obvious that the performance of the multi-dimensional force sensor is mainly dependent upon the mechanical structure of elastic body. Furthermore, the calibration process of the force sensor is analyzed, and problems in calibration are discussed. Interdimensional coupling error is one of the main factors affecting the measurement precision of the multi-dimensional force sensors. Therefore, reducing or even eliminating dimensional coupling error becomes a fundamental requirement in the design of multi-dimensional force sensors, and the decoupling state-of-art of the multi-dimensional force sensors are introduced in this paper. At last, the trends and current challenges of multi-dimensional force sensing technology are proposed.
A Compliant Three-Axis Force Sensor with Solid–Liquid Hybrid Cover for Prosthetic Fingertip

Abstract:To realize compliant contact, current three-axis force sensors for prosthetic or robotic hands always contain flexible, sensitive materials or elastic cover layer, which inevitably increases hysteresis and decreases measurement accuracy of the sensors due to the viscoelasticity of materials. To overcome this problem, this article proposes a compliant three-axis force sensor with a friendly solid-liquid hybrid cover. The tactile sensor consists of four parts: an elastic cavity layer, a dielectric liquid layer, four silicon-based pressure dies, and a flexible printed circuit board (FPCB). When a three-axis contact force is applied to the sensor, the elastic cavity layer deforms, and then the fluid in the cavity is compressed, which leads to different resistance changes on the four silicon-based pressure dies. By combining the resistance changes, the normal and shear components of the three-axis force can be calculated. A sensor prototype is fabricated, and a series of performance tests are implemented. Results show that the sensor has good sensitivities with 1.36, 1.39, and 0.47 V/N were 0–1.1, 0–1.1, and 0–6 N, respectively. In addition, the sensor showed low hysteresis and high repeatability, with a hysteresis error of 2.23% and a repeatability error of 1.02%. Meanwhile, daily life grabbing and texture recognition tests were performed, and results showed that the grip force and texture could be accurately detected.
Development of an Integrated Haptic Sensor System for Multimodal Human–Computer Interaction Using Ultrasonic Array and Cable Robot

Abstract:This paper presents the design and development of a novel haptic sensor system. It integrates cable-driven force and ultrasonic tactile feedback, which can produce multimodal haptic stimuli. The sensing element includes a Leapmotion, an ultrasonic transducer array, tension sensors, and rotary encoders, which are used to capture hand posture, project tactile points, measure cable force and length, respectively. Firstly, a 6-DOF cable-driven force feedback apparatus based on parallel mechanism is designed and ultrasonic phased array is combined to form a multimodal haptic feedback system. Secondly, a multimodal haptic fusion method for cable-driven force and ultrasonic tactile is firstly proposed to invoke realistic compound haptic sensations. To enhance the rendering effects of each subsystem, admittance control is developed for a cable robot, and a new perceived magnitude model is established for ultrasound tactile rendering. A psychophysical experiment is conducted to study the perceived characteristics of multimodal haptic stimuli. To verify the proposed system, a series of experiments were carried out, whose results indicated that the system performs well at multi-property haptic rendering and confirm the accuracy and sensitive advantage of our system in virtual reality applications. The results of our study indicate that this device has great application potential in human-computer interaction.

Three-Axis Contact Force Measurement of A Flexible Tactile Sensor Array for Hand Grasping Applications

Abstract:This chapter explores the development of a flexible tactile sensor array based on pressure conductive rubber for three-axis force measurement in grasping application. The structural design, testing principle, fabrication process, and characterization of the tactile sensor array are presented. Three-axis force measurement performances for all nine sensing units have been carried out. The full-scale force measurement ranges of the tactile sensor array in x-, y- and z-axis are 5, 5, and 20 N, respectively. The corresponding sensitivities in x- and y-axis are 0.838 and 0.834 V/N, respectively. In z-axis, the sensor array has two sensitivities: 0.3675 V/N for 0–10 N and 0.0538 V/N for 10–20 N measurement ranges. Then, the tactile sensor array has been mounted onto a human hand finger and used to measure the real-time 3D contact forces during grasping application. Results showed that the developed tactile sensor array features high sensitivities and has the potential for real-time tactile images for gripping positioning and 3D grasping force feedback control in grasping applications.
MH-Pen: A Pen-type Multi-mode Haptic Interface for Touch Screens Interaction

Abstract:Touch screen technology supplies a new approach to interact with virtual environments. For haptic interaction on a touch screen, haptic devices that are capable of simultaneously conveying tactile and force information to users are highly desired for enhancing the sense of reality and immersion. To this end, a prototype haptic interface, called MH-Pen, was developed and fabricated to display the virtual interactive information through multi-mode haptic feedback. The MH-Pen is a self-contained system that provides vibrotactile feedback and precise force feedback by integrating three types of actuators. In this paper, MH-Pen's design, specifications, and working principle are described. Subsequently, to accurately display the interaction force, a hybrid actuator was designed by combining a piston-type magnetorheological (MR) actuator and a voice coil motor (VCM), and a closed-loop control scheme was built to manage the hybrid actuator. Finally, we objectively and subjectively evaluated the force feedback performance and the effect of multi-mode haptic display of the MH-Pen through physical measurements and psychophysical experiments of virtual surface stiffness display. The results show that improving the precision of force feedback and using multi-mode haptic display are both useful and necessary to enhance the sense of human-computer interaction realism.

A soft thumb-sized vision-based sensor with accurate all-round force perception

Abstract:Vision-based haptic sensors have emerged as a promising approach to robotic touch due to affordable high-resolution cameras and successful computer-vision techniques. However, their physical design and the information they provide do not yet meet the requirements of real applications. We present a robust, soft, low-cost, vision-based, thumb-sized 3D haptic sensor named Insight: it continually provides a directional force-distribution map over its entire conical sensing surface. Constructed around an internal monocular camera, the sensor has only a single layer of elastomer over-molded on a stiff frame to guarantee sensitivity, robustness, and soft contact. Furthermore, Insight is the first system to combine photometric stereo and structured light using a collimator to detect the 3D deformation of its easily replaceable flexible outer shell. The force information is inferred by a deep neural network that maps images to the spatial distribution of 3D contact force (normal and shear). Insight has an overall spatial resolution of 0.4 mm, force magnitude accuracy around 0.03 N, and force direction accuracy around 5 degrees over a range of 0.03--2 N for numerous distinct contacts with varying contact area. The presented hardware and software design concepts can be transferred to a wide variety of robot parts.

Abstract:Human-Machine Interface (HMI) plays a key role in the interaction between people and machines, which allows people to easily and intuitively control the machine and immersively experience the virtual world of the meta-universe by virtual reality/augmented reality (VR/AR) technology. Currently, wearable skin-integrated tactile and force sensors are widely used in immersive human-machine interactions due to their ultra-thin, ultra-soft, conformal characteristics. In this paper, the recent progress of tactile and force sensors used in HMI are reviewed, including piezoresistive, capacitive, piezoelectric, triboelectric, and other sensors. Then, this paper discusses how to improve the performance of tactile and force sensors for HMI. Next, this paper summarizes the HMI for dexterous robotic manipulation and VR/AR applications. Finally, this paper summarizes and proposes the future development trend of HMI.

Abstract:Numerous studies have indicated that the use of a closed-loop haptic feedback system, which offers various mechano-tactile stimuli patterns with different actuation methods, can improve the performance and grasp control of prosthetic hands. Purely mechanical-driven feedback approaches for various mechano-tactile stimuli patterns, however, have not been explored. In this paper, a multi-cavity fluidic haptic feedback system is introduced with details of design, fabrication, and validation. The multi-cavity haptic feedback system can detect the physical touch with direction at the fingertip sensor. The direction of the force is reflected in the form of pressure deviation in the multi-cavity fingertip sensor. The feedback actuator generates various mechano-tactile stimuli patterns according to the pressure deviation from the fingertip sensor. Hence, users can identify the force with direction according to the stimuli patterns. The haptic feedback system is validated through two experiments. The initial experiment characterises the system and establishes the relationship between the fingertip sensor and feedback actuator. The subsequent experiment, a human interaction test, confirms the system's capability to detect force with directions and generate corresponding tactile stimuli in the feedback actuator. The outcomes corroborate the idea that participants are generally capable of discerning changes in angle.

Abstract:Abstract Flexible piezoresistive sensor array has broad application prospects in human-computer interaction. However, due to the complexity of reality, it is difficult to balance flexibility and perceptual ability in the process of tactile perception. Presented herein is a 4 × 4 matrix of a piezoresistive tactile sensor (TS) that is both pliable and composed of a porous blend of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). This sensor matrix is endowed with characteristics like pliability, consistency, and acute sensitivity, which facilitate its adherence to various shaped surface profiles. It boasts a peak sensitivity of 0.6 kPa−1 and is capable of detecting pressures within a broad spectrum from 0 to 640 kPa. An in-depth examination has been undertaken to assess the TS array's response to pressure, encompassing aspects such as hysteresis and repeatability. In addition to this, a scanning system for the array has been constructed to promptly detect, digitize, and present the pressure applied. A neural network model for three-dimensional force decoupling has been established to analyze the real-time data emanating from the sensor matrix, thereby enabling the precise forecasting of the three-dimensional force exerted upon the array.

Abstract:Immersive human–machine interaction relies on comprehensive sensing and feedback systems, which enable transmission of multiple pieces of information. However, the integration of increasing numbers of feedback actuators and sensors causes a severe issue in terms of system complexity. In this work, we propose a pressure-sensing and feedback glove that enables multi-dimensional pressure sensing and feedback with a minimalist design of the functional units. The proposed glove consists of modular strain and pressure sensors based on films of liquid metal microchannels and coin vibrators. Strain sensors located at the finger joints can simultaneously project the bending motion of the individual joint into the virtual space or robotic hand. For subsequent tactile interactions, the design of two symmetrically distributed pressure sensors and vibrators at the fingertips possesses capabilities for multi-directional pressure sensing and feedback by evaluating the relationship of the signal variations between two sensors and tuning the feedback intensities of two vibrators. Consequently, both dynamic and static multi-dimensional pressure communication can be realized, and the vibrational actuation can be monitored by a liquid-metal-based sensor via a triboelectric sensing mechanism. A demonstration of object interaction indicates that the proposed glove can effectively detect dynamic force in varied directions at the fingertip while offering the reconstruction of a similar perception via the haptic feedback function. This device introduces an approach that adopts a minimalist design to achieve a multi-functional system, and it can benefit commercial applications in a more cost-effective way.

Abstract:Artificial tactile sensing capable of measuring shear and normal forces is crucial for the diverse human-machine interactions and dexterous robotic manipulations. However, existing soft multi-axis force sensors usually suffer from limited detectable directions and complex coupling mechanisms, limiting their applications in realistic wearable and robotic systems. Here, a hierarchically-interlocked, three-axis soft iontronic sensor is presented with an asymmetrical electrode pattern that leverages the mortise-and-tenon structure and ultracapacitive principle to detect omnidirectional shear and normal forces. The designed sensor facilitates the decoupling process and achieves enhanced sensing performances including high accuracy, fast response ability, and mechanical robustness. Prototypical integration and application of the sensor are demonstrated to perform wearable telecontrol of virtual platforms and assist robot gripper through closed-loop force feedback. A sensing array is further developed to construct a touch panel and identify handwriting based on the continuously measured directions of applied forces. This work may offer a potentially promising solution for the next-generation intelligent electronic skins requiring multimodal tactile sensing information. A hierarchically-interlocked, three-axis soft iontronic sensor is proposed to detect omnidirectional shear and normal forces. Asymmetrical electrode pattern with mortise-and-tenon sensing architecture facilitates decoupling process and achieves enhanced sensing performances. Abstract:Force and tactile sensing has experienced a surge of interest over recent decades. It conveys a range of information through physical interaction, including force, pressure, texture and vibration. Even so, existing tactile sensors have difficulty in precisely acquiring force signals to capture magnitude and direction. This is because vision-based tactile sensors, such as the popular GelSight sensor, estimate force and torque from discrete markers embedded in a compliant sensor interface and detected via image processing, resulting in force errors that are sizeable. This paper presents a novel design for a force/tactile sensor, namely F-TOUCH (Force and Tactile Optically Unified Coherent Haptics), that signifies an appreciable advance on current state-of-the-art tactile sensors. In addition to the acquisition of geometric features via the (silicone) elastomeric component at a high spatial resolution, our sensor incorporates a deformable spring-mechanism structure, allowing us to measure translational and rotational force and torque along six axes with high accuracy. The proposed sensor contains three principal components: a coated elastomer layer acting as the compliant sensing medium, spring mechanisms acting as deformable structural elements, and a camera for image capture. The camera records the deformation of the structural elements as well as the distortion of the compliant sensing medium, concurrently acquiring force and tactile information. The sensor is calibrated with the aid of a commercial ATI Industrial Automation<sup>®</sup> 6-axis force/torque sensor. An experimental study reveals that the F-TOUCH sensor outperforms GelSight as a force sensor.

Abstract:A wearable bi-directional human-machine interaction (HMI) system and its control methods are proposed to enable the user to control multi-DOF robotic hand freely and feel the gripping force from the robotic hand. A force sensory resistor (FSR) array is built to measure the forearm force myographic (FMG) signals corresponding to different hand motions of the user. A multiclass classifier is designed based on the support vector machine (SVM) algorithm to recognize the hand motions and generate motion codes to control the robotic hand movements. Moreover, sensory feedback is achieved by transforming the gripping force signals of the robotic hand into electrical stimulation signals of skin based on the principle of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS). Experimental results show that the motion mode recognition method based on FMG and SVM can identify 10 typical hand motions with the accuracy of above 95%. The electrical stimulation method can feed back the perception of gripping force to the body accurately and help the user to grip objects without vision.
HumanFT: A Human-like Fingertip Multimodal Visuo-Tactile Sensor

Abstract:Tactile sensors play a crucial role in enabling robots to interact effectively and safely with objects in everyday tasks. In particular, visuotactile sensors have seen increasing usage in two and three-fingered grippers due to their high-quality feedback. However, a significant gap remains in the development of sensors suitable for humanoid robots, especially five-fingered dexterous hands. One reason is because of the challenges in designing and manufacturing sensors that are compact in size. In this paper, we propose HumanFT, a multimodal visuotactile sensor that replicates the shape and functionality of a human fingertip. To bridge the gap between human and robotic tactile sensing, our sensor features real-time force measurements, high-frequency vibration detection, and overtemperature alerts. To achieve this, we developed a suite of fabrication techniques for a new type of elastomer optimized for force propagation and temperature sensing. Besides, our sensor integrates circuits capable of sensing pressure and vibration. These capabilities have been validated through experiments. The proposed design is simple and cost-effective to fabricate. We believe HumanFT can enhance humanoid robots' perception by capturing and interpreting multimodal tactile information.

Evaluating Force-based Haptics for Immersive Tangible Interactions with Surface Visualizations

Abstract:Haptic feedback provides an essential sensory stimulus crucial for interaction and analyzing three-dimensional spatio-temporal phenomena on surface visualizations. Given its ability to provide enhanced spatial perception and scene maneuverability, virtual reality (VR) catalyzes haptic interactions on surface visualizations. Various interaction modes, encompassing both mid-air and on-surface interactions -- with or without the application of assisting force stimuli -- have been explored using haptic force feedback devices. In this paper, we evaluate the use of on-surface and assisted on-surface haptic modes of interaction compared to a no-haptic interaction mode. A force-based haptic stylus is used for all three modalities; the on-surface mode uses collision based forces, whereas the assisted on-surface mode is accompanied by an additional snapping force. We conducted a within-subjects user study involving fundamental interaction tasks performed on surface visualizations. Keeping a consistent visual design across all three modes, our study incorporates tasks that require the localization of the highest, lowest, and random points on surfaces; and tasks that focus on brushing curves on surfaces with varying complexity and occlusion levels. Our findings show that participants took almost the same time to brush curves using all the interaction modes. They could draw smoother curves using the on-surface interaction modes compared to the no-haptic mode. However, the assisted on-surface mode provided better accuracy than the on-surface mode. The on-surface mode was slower in point localization, but the accuracy depended on the visual cues and occlusions associated with the tasks. Finally, we discuss participant feedback on using haptic force feedback as a tangible input modality and share takeaways to aid the design of haptics-based tangible interactions for surface visualizations.

Theory and Design of Super-resolution Haptic Skins

Abstract:Haptic feedback is important to make robots more dexterous and effective in unstructured environments. High-resolution haptic sensors are still not widely available, and their application is often bound by the resolution-robustness dilemma. A route towards high-resolution and robust skin embeds a few sensor units (taxels) into a flexible surface material and uses signal processing to achieve sensing with super-resolution accuracy. We propose a theory for geometric super-resolution to guide the development of haptic sensors of this kind and link it to machine learning techniques for signal processing. This theory is based on sensor isolines and allows us to predict force sensitivity and accuracy in contact position and force magnitude as a spatial quantity. We evaluate the influence of different factors, such as elastic properties of the material, structure design, and transduction methods, using finite element simulations and by implementing real sensors. We empirically determine sensor isolines and validate the theory in two custom-built sensors with barometric units for 1D and 2D measurement surfaces. Using machine learning methods for the inference of contact information, our sensors obtain an unparalleled average super-resolution factor of over 100 and 1200, respectively. Our theory can guide future haptic sensor designs and inform various design choices.

Abstract:Tactile sensing is important for both humans and robots especially about force sensing. Although recently some successful tactile sensors have been designed, robot's is still underdeveloped, particularly about sensing multi-modal tactile information and reducing its price. There is a great demand for developing tactile sensors. When a robot exploring perform a complicated manipulation task such as grasping some fragile things, sensing of multi-axis force is important. In this paper, focusing on force sensing, we first develop a stereo vision based optical multi-modal sensor. This sensor consists of a soft skin with markers inserting it, and two RGB cameras. When external force applied to the sensor, the soft layer's deformation would cause movement of markers. A markers tracking algorithm is developed to get the displacement of the markers. A contact force field will be estimated by tracking markers in the soft skin. This sensor could be made with off-the-shelf materials. We make a prototype of this sensor and demonstrate its usefulness in force estimation.

However, traditional flexible capacitive 3D force sensors based on the array structure usually only sense 3D force with equivalent forward pressure rather than the decoupling of real 3D force in space. Herein, we design a flexible capacitive 3D force sensor with petal-like electrode to capture various hand movements in 3D space and further decouple 3D force to 1D force along [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] directions. The sensor presents a high sensitivity (1.1 kPa[Formula: see text]at the pressures below 1 kPa), a fast response (63 ms) and excellent repeatability under continuous pressure. In addition, the electrode with eight-petal structure helps simplify the decoupling process of 3D force. Through handwriting test, the sensor presents good sensing performance for hand motion capture and handwriting recognition, which is expected to be applied in the field of human–computer interaction.

Abstract:As more robots are implemented for contact-rich tasks, tactile sensors are in increasing demand. For many circumstances, the contact is required to be compliant, and soft sensors are in need. This paper introduces a novelly designed soft sensor that can simultaneously estimate the contact force and contact location. Inspired by humans' skin, which contains multi-layers of receptors, the designed tactile sensor has a dual-layer structure. The first layer is made of a conductive fabric that is responsible for sensing the contact force. The second layer is composed of four small conductive rubbers that can detect the contact location. Signals from the two layers are firstly processed by Wheatstone bridges and amplifier circuits so that the measurement noises are eliminated, and the sensitivity is improved. An Arduino chip is used for processing the signal and analyzing the data. The contact force can be obtained by a pre-trained model that maps from the voltage to force, and the contact location is estimated by the voltage signal from the conductive rubbers in the second layer. In addition, filtering methods are applied to eliminate the estimation noise. Finally, experiments are provided to show the accuracy and robustness of the sensor.
