Abstract:In this work, I present a straightforward approach for computing surface free energy γF based on the assessment of surface internal energy (γU), avoiding the difficulty connected to the determination of the elastic contribution in the case of a solid surface. This methodology has thus been extended to the calculation of γF for the interface between the liquid–vapor phase of water, the solid–vapor interface of aluminum, the aluminum–water interface, rigid graphene–water solid–liquid interfaces, and the n-dodecane–water liquid–liquid interface.

Abstract:Based on the free-volume theory,the group contribution lattice-fluid (GCLF) equation-of-state (EOS) was employed to determine the effective free volume provided by polymer for solvent diffusion.And thus a modified diffusion coefficient model was proposed for polymer-solvent systems.Since all the parameters related to polymer can be calculated by group contributions,this model can be used to predict solvent diffusion coefficients in polymers with molecular structures as the input.Calculations of infinite dilution diffusion coefficients and solvent self-diffusion coefficients were consistent with experimental data for eight organic solvents in six polymers.In addition,results form positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) measurements proved the reliability of the modification,on the basis that the ratio of the hole free volume to the total free volume in polymer from microscopic view should be equal to that from macroscopic view.

Abstract:Using the observation that configurations of N polymers with hard core interactions on a closed random surface correspond to random surfaces with N boundary components we calculate the free energy of a gas of polymers interacting with fully quantized two-dimensional gravity. We derive the equation of state for the polymer gas and find that all the virial coefficients beyond the second one vanish identically.

Abstract:Interfacial free energy is a quantitative basis for explaining and predicting interfacial behavior that is ubiquitous in nature. The contact angle (CA) method can determine the surface free energy (γ) as well as Lifshitz-van der Waals (γLW) and Lewis acid/base (γ+/γ-) components of a solid material from its CAs with a set of known test liquids according to the extended Young-Dupré equation. However, the reliability of the "known" parameters of the test liquids is questioned due to the long-neglected surface roughness effect during calibration of the liquids. This study proposed a simple and practicable two-step approach to correct the energy parameters of several test liquids by incorporating Wenzel's surface roughness relationship into CA measurement. Step 1: water and two apolar liquids (diiodomethane and α-bromonaphthalene) were used as benchmarks to calibrate the surface roughness and energy parameters of two reference solids [apolar poly(tetrafluoroethylene) and monopolar poly(methyl methacrylate)], and step 2: the reference solids were used to calibrate any other test liquids by solving the energy parameters from their CAs in the extended Young-Dupré-Wenzel model. Monte Carlo simulation was used to evaluate error transmission and robustness of the model solutions. The obtained energy parameters (γLW/γ+/γ-) of four test liquids (dimethyl sulfoxide, formamide, ethylene glycol, and glycerol) are 28.01/13.68/4.67, 34.95/3.53/37.62, 26.26/7.51/15.74, and 32.99/9.24/26.02 mJ/m2, respectively, and different from the literature values. The liquids were applied to characterize an example solid surface with true γLW/γ+/γ- values of 28.00/1.00/8.00 mJ/m2 and a roughness index (r) of 1.60. Without correction of the liquid parameters, the calculated surface energy, hydration energy, and hydrophobic attraction energy of the solid sample can deviate by 50, 13, and 27%, respectively. This proves the necessity of correcting parameters of the test liquids before they can be used in CA and interfacial energy studies in the presence of surface roughness.

Abstract:We study the phenomenon of migration of the small molecular weight component of a binary polymer mixture to the free surface using mean field and self-consistent field theories. By proposing a free energy functional that incorporates polymer-matrix elasticity explicitly, we compute the migrant volume fraction and show that it decreases significantly as the sample rigidity is increased. Estimated values of the bulk modulus suggest that the effect should be observable experimentally for rubber-like materials. This provides a simple way of controlling surface migration in polymer mixtures and can play an important role in industrial formulations, where surface migration often leads to decreased product functionality.

A new methodology for measuring solid/liquid interfacial energy

Abstract:Hypothesis: The interfacial energy γsl between a solid and a liquid designates the affinity between these two phases, and in turn, the macroscopic wettability of the surface by the fluid. This property is needed for precise control of fluid-transport phenomena that affect the operation/quality of commercial devices/products. Although several indirect or theoretical approaches can quantify the solid/liquid interfacial energy, no direct experimental procedure exists to measure this property for realistic (i.e. rough) surfaces. Makkonen hypothesized that the frictional resistance force per unit contact-line length is equal to the interfacial energy on smooth surfaces, which, however, are rarely found in practice. Consequently, the hypothesis that Makkonen's assumption may also hold for rough surfaces (which are far more common in practice) arises naturally. If so, a reliable and simple experimental methodology of obtaining γsl for rough surfaces can be put forth. This is accomplished by performing dynamic contact-angle experiments on rough surfaces that quantify the relationship between the frictional resistance force per unit contact-line length acting on an advancing liquid (Fp,a) and the surface roughness in wetting configurations. Experiment: We perform static and advancing contact-line experiments with aqueous and organic liquids on different hydrophilic surfaces (Al, Cu, Si) with varying Wenzel roughnesses in the range 1-2. These parameters are combined with the liquid's known surface tension to determine Fp,a. Findings: Fp,a rises linearly with the surface roughness. Analysis based on existing theories of wetting and contact-angle hysteresis reveals that the slope of Fp,a vs.Wenzel roughness is equal to the solid/liquid interfacial energy, which is thus determined experimentally with the present measurements. Interfacial energies obtained with this experimental approach are within 12% of theoretically predicted values for several solid/liquid pairs, thereby validating this methodology.

Abstract:The concept of additivity of surface tension components has been used to predict the adsorptive fouling tendency of membranes. The calculated value for the free energy of adhesion ΔGLWS is taken as a measure for this fouling tendency. ΔGLWS values can be determined from the surface tension components of the solid and liquid. The determination of the surface tension components of the solid surfaces has been carried out using sessile drop contact angle measurements with water, glycerol and α-bromonaphthalene.ΔGLWS values have been determined for human serum albumin (HSA) and polyethyleneglycol (PEG) on ten different non-porous polymer surfaces and it has been calculated that cellulose acetate (CA) and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) showed the lowest fouling tendency, whereas polyethersulfone (PES) and polyvinylidenedifluoride (PVDF) showed the highest fouling tendencies.

Abstract:The Neumann Equation of State (EQS) allows obtaining the value of the surface free energy of a solid ${\gamma}_{SV}$ from the contact angle $({\theta})$ of a probe liquid with known surface tension ${\gamma}_{LV}$. The value of ${\gamma}_{SV}$ is obtained by numerical methods solving the corresponding EQS. In this work, we analyzed the discrepancies between the values of ${\gamma}_{SV}$ obtained using the three versions of the EQS reported in the literature. The condition number of the different EQS was used to analyze their sensitivity to the uncertainty in the ${\theta}$ values. Polynomials fit to one of these versions of EQS are proposed to obtain values of ${\gamma}_{SV}$ directly from contact angles $({\gamma}_{SV} ({\theta}))$ of particular probe liquids. Finally, a general adjusted polynomial is presented to obtain the values of ${\gamma}_{SV}$ not restricted to a particular probe liquid $({\gamma}_{SV}({\theta},{\gamma}_{LV}))$. Results showed that the three versions of EQS present non-negligible discrepancies, especially at high values of ${\theta}$. The sensitivity of the EQS to the uncertainty in the values of ${\theta}$ is very similar in the three versions and depends on the probe liquid used (greater sensitivity at higher ${\gamma}_{LV})$ and on the value of ${\gamma}_{SV}$ of the solid (greater sensitivity at lower ${\gamma}_{SV})$. The discrepancy of the values obtained by numerical resolution of both the fifth-order fit polynomials and the general fit polynomial was low, no larger than ${\pm}0.40\,mJ/m^{2}$. The polynomials obtained allow the analysis and propagation of the uncertainty of the input variables in the determination of ${\gamma}_{SV}$ in a simple and fast way.

Abstract:Experimental determination of absolute surface energies remains a challenge. We propose a simple method based on two independent measurements on 3D and 2D equilibrium shapes completed by the analysis of the thermal fluctuation of an isolated step. Using then basic equations (Wulff' theorem, Gibbs-Thomson equation, thermodynamics fluctuation of an isolated step) allows us to extract the absolute surface free energy of a singular face. The so-proposed method can be applied when (i) all orientations exists on the equilibrium shape, (ii) the surface stress is isotropic. This procedure is applied to the case of Si(111) where we find a value between 0.59 Jm-2 and 0.83 Jm-2 at 1373 K.

Abstract:Surface energy is fundamental in controlling surface properties and surface-driven processes like heterogeneous catalysis, as adsorption energy is. It is thus essential to establish an effective scheme to determine surface energy and its relation with adsorption energy. Herein, we propose a model to quantify the effects of materials' intrinsic characteristics on the material-dependent property and anisotropy of surface energy, based on the period number and group number of bulk atoms, and the valence-electron number, electronegativity and coordination of surface atoms. Our scheme holds for elemental crystals in both solid and liquid phases, body-centered-tetragonal intermetallics, fluorite-structure intermetallics, face-centered-cubic intermetallics, Mg-based single-atom alloys, III-V semiconductors, transition metal carbides, and transition metal nitrides, which further identifies a quantitative relation between surface energy and adsorption energy and rationalizes the material-dependent error of first-principle methods in calculating the two quantities. This model is predictive with easily accessible parameters and thus allows the rapid screening of materials for targeted properties.

Abstract:The thermal surface properties of graphenes and carbon materials are of crucial importance in the chemistry of materials, chemical engineering, and many industrial processes. Background: The determination of these surface properties is carried out using inverse gas chromatography at infinite dilution, which leads to the retention volume of organic solvents adsorbed on solid surfaces. This experimental and fundamental parameter actually reflects the surface thermodynamic interactions between injected probes and solid substrates. Methods: The London dispersion equation and the Hamieh thermal model are used to quantify the London dispersive and polar surface energy of graphenes and carbon fibers as well their Lewis acid-base constants by introducing the coupling amphoteric constant of materials. Results: The London dispersive and polar acid-base surface energies, the free energy of adsorption, the polar enthalpy and entropy, and the Lewis acid-base constants of graphenes and carbon materials are determined. Conclusions: It is shown that graphene exhibited the highest values of London dispersive surface energy, polar surface energy, and Lewis acid-base constants. The highest characteristics of graphene justify its great potentiality and uses in many industrial applications.

Abstract:An equation is derived on semi-theoretical grounds which expresses the solid-vapour surface free energy as a function of the liquid surface tension and the solid-liquid interfacial free energy. A means of calculating reliable values for the solid-liquid energy is presented, which then allows an accurate estimate of solid surface energy at the melting temperature, Tm, to be made for the large number of elements for which dependable liquid surface tension data exist. A method of estimating surface entropy is presented, and has been used to calculate the energies typical of “average”, high-index surfaces at temperatures ranging from 0 K to Tm. It is felt that this paper describes the most accurate method presently available for the calculation of the surface energy of solids in the absence of direct experimental measurement.

Abstract:The number of allowed configurations of a polymer is reduced by the presence of a repulsive surface resulting in an entropic force between them. We develop a method to calculate the entropic force, and detailed pressure distribution, for long ideal polymers near a scale-free repulsive surface. For infinite polymers the monomer density is related to the electrostatic potential near a conducting surface of a charge placed at the point where the polymer end is held. Pressure of the polymer on the surface is then related to the charge density distribution in the electrostatic problem. We derive explicit expressions for pressure distributions and monomer densities for ideal polymers near a two- or three-dimensional wedge, and for a circular cone in three dimensions. Pressure of the polymer diverges near sharp corners in a manner resembling (but not identical to) the electric field divergence near conducting surfaces. We provide formalism for calculation of all components of the total force in situations without axial symmetry.

Abstract:There should be some intrinsic correlations between the surface free energy (γ) and solubility (δ) parameters, called characteristic parameters here, of substances with their basic physical properties such as the relative dielectric constant (εr) and density (ρ), because they are all related to intermolecular interactions. Several correlations have been proposed empirically (or semiempirically) for liquids, but not for solids. It is essential to establish such correlations for solids because the estimation of γ and δ for solids is difficult and/or time-consuming. In the current work, the γ, δ, εr, and ρ data of 34 inorganic solids were chosen, and possible relationships between the characteristic parameters (γ and δ) and the physical quantities (εr and ρ) were explored by a trial-and-error fitting method based on the data of the solids. Six equations relating γ and δ to εr and δ were established. The γ parameters include total (γt), dispersive (γd), and polar (γp) ones, and the δ parameters include the Hildebrand parameter (δt) and the Hansen-dispersive (δd), polar (δp), and hydrogen-bonding (δh) ones. The empirical equations can be used to estimate the characteristic parameters of inorganic solids from their easily measurable physical quantities.

Abstract:The linear diblock copolymer polystyrene-b-poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PS-P4VP) is an important copolymer recently used in many applications such as optoelectronics, sensors, catalysis, membranes, energy conversion, energy storage devices, photolithography, and biomedical applications. (1) Background: The surface thermodynamic properties of PS-P4VP copolymers are of great importance in many chemical and industrial processes. (2) Methods: The inverse gas chromatography (IGC) at infinite dilution was used for the experimental determination of the retention volumes of organic solvents adsorbed on copolymer surfaces as a function of temperature. This led to the variations in the free energy of interaction necessary to the evaluation of the London dispersive and polar acid–base surface energies, the polar enthalpy and entropy, the Lewis acid–base constants, and the transition temperatures of the PS-P4VP copolymer. (3) Results: The application of the thermal Hamieh model led to an accurate determination of the London dispersive surface energy of the copolymer that showed non-linear variations versus the temperature, highlighting the presence of two transition temperatures. It was observed that the Lewis acid–base parameters of the copolymer strongly depend on the temperature, and the Lewis base constant of the solid surface was shown to be higher than its acid constant. (4) Conclusions: An important effect of the temperature on the surface thermodynamic properties of PS-P4VP was proven and new surface correlations were determined.

Construction and calibration of a goniometer to measure contact angles and calculate the surface free energy in solids with uncertainty analysis

Abstract:Here, we present the construction and calibration of a low-cost goniometer to measure contact angles by the sessile drop method. Besides, we propose a simple and fast method to calculate the uncertainty in the determination of the surface free energy (SFE) and its polar and dispersive components through the Owens-Wendt model and tested it by using two testing liquids. The goniometer performance and the SFE uncertainty were determined on two polymers: polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE) and polyoxymethylene (POM), by using water and methylene iodide. The values of contact angle measured were used to calculate the SFE and its components with their errors. The SFE values obtained for PTFE were 17.57-17.91 mJ/m^2, with a relative error lower than 5.5 %, whereas those for POM were 42.80-43.23 mJ/m^2, with a relative error lower than 4.3%. Both the SFE values and the errors were in the range of those previously reported. Based on the mathematical analysis of the uncertainty propagation in the determination of SFE, we concluded that the uncertainty is minimized when the testing liquids are an apolar liquid and water.

Abstract:Polymer-surface interactions are crucial to many biological processes and industrial applications. Here we propose a machine-learning method to connect a model polymer's sequence with its adhesion to decorated surfaces. We simulate the adhesive free energies of $20,000$ unique coarse-grained 1D sequential polymers interacting with functionalized surfaces and build support vector regression (SVR) models that demonstrate inexpensive and reliable prediction of the adhesive free energy as a function of the sequence. Our work highlights the promising integration of coarse-grained simulation with data-driven machine learning methods for the design of new functional polymers and represents an important step toward linking polymer compositions with polymer-surface interactions.

Abstract:The determination of the polar surface free energy, polar properties, and Lewis's acid base of solid materials is of capital importance in many industrial processes, such as adhesion, coatings, two-dimensional films, and adsorption phenomena. (1) Background: The physicochemical properties of many solid particles were characterized during the last forty years by using the retention time of injected well-known molecules into chromatographic columns containing the solid substrates to be characterized. The obtained net retention time of the solvents adsorbed on the solid, allowing the determination of the net retention volume directly correlated to the specific surface variables, dispersive, polar, and acid–base properties. (2) Methods: Many chromatographic methods were used to quantify the values of the different specific surface variables of the solids. However, one found a large deviation between the different results. In this paper, one proposed a new method based on the London dispersion equation that allowed the quantification of the polar free energy of adsorption, as well as the Lewis's acid–base constants of many solid surfaces. (3) Results: The newly applied method allowed us to obtain the polar enthalpy and entropy of adsorption of polar model organic molecules on several solid substrates, such as silica, alumina, MgO, ZnO, Zn, TiO2, and carbon fibers. (4) Conclusions: our new method based on the separation between the dispersive and polar free surface energy allowed us to better characterize the solid materials.
