As the composite market aims for 15.5 Mt by 2026, enhancing the sustainability of FRPCs is vital. Focus areas include end‐of‐life management, recyclability, the use of sustainable materials, and product simplification. These factors, crucial for sustainability, are thoroughly discussed to meet the evolving demands of a greener future. Fiber‐reinforced polymer composites (FRPCs) are versatile materials with applications in diverse fields such as transportation, construction, and electronics. With the composites market expected to reach 15.5 Mt by 2026, increasing the sustainability of FRPCs is imperative. Abstract:Fiber reinforced polymer composites (FRPs) are valuable construction materials owing to their strength, durability, and design flexibility; however, conventional FRPs utilize petroleum-based polymer matrices with limited recyclability. Furthermore, fiber reinforcements are made from nonrenewable feedstocks, through expensive and energy intensive processes, making recovery and reuse advantageous. Thus, FRPs that use biobased and degradable or reprocessable matrices would enable a more sustainable product, as both components can be recovered and reused. We previously developed a family of degradable and reprocessable cross-linked polyesters from bioderived cyclic esters (l-lactide, δ-valerolactone, and ε-caprolactone) copolymerized with a bis(1,3-dioxolan-4-one) cross-linker. We now incorporate these networks into FRPs and demonstrate degradability of the matrix into tartaric acid and oligomers, enabling recovery and reuse of the fiber reinforcement. Furthermore, the effect of varying comonomer structure, catalyst, reinforcement type, and lay-up method on mechanical properties of the resultant FRPs is explored. The FRPs produced have tensile strengths of up to 202 MPa and Young's moduli up to 25 GPa, promising evidence that sustainable FRPs can rival the mechanical properties of conventional high performance FRPs.

Abstract:Natural fibers are emerging as low cost, lightweight and apparently environmentally superior alternatives to glass fibers in composites. We review select comparative life cycle assessment studies of natural fiber and glass fiber composites, and identify key drivers of their relative environmental performance. Natural fiber composites are likely to be environmentally superior to glass fiber composites in most cases for the following reasons: (1) natural fiber production has lower environmental impacts compared to glass fiber production; (2) natural fiber composites have higher fiber content for equivalent performance, reducing more polluting base polymer content; (3) the light-weight natural fiber composites improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions in the use phase of the component, especially in auto applications; and (4) end of life incineration of natural fibers results in recovered energy and carbon credits.

Abstract:Fiber-reinforced polymer composites (FRCs) from renewable and biodegradable fiber and sustainable polymer resins have gained substantial attention for their potential to mitigate environmental impacts. The limitations of these composites become evident when considered in the context of high-performance engineering applications, where synthetic fiber composites like glass or carbon FRCs typically dominate. A balance between the performance of the composite and biodegradability is imperative in the pursuit of what may be termed an environmentally conscious composite. This comprehensive review article provides some insight into the sustainability of FRCs, alongside detailing the sustainability considerations at various stages—materials, performance, applications, and end of life. The discussion also covers the different types of sustainable natural fibers and the types of polymer resins with some of the current achievements in the mechanical and functional properties of such composites, followed by a broad survey of their potential applications across diverse engineering applications.

Abstract:A brief presentation of study procedure and observed results. Polymer adhesives have considerable mechanical and environmental privileges; however, their high price makes them uncommercial for common uses. This study investigates the incorporation of recycled or byproduct fillers in epoxy resin‐based composites to assess their mechanical properties, environmental impacts, and cost efficiency. The fillers examined include fly ash, glass powder, slag, silica powder, and limestone powder. Tensile, compressive, and fracture tests were conducted on composites with various filler proportions (0%–80% by weight). From microstructure observations, round (fly ash, glass powder) and rough (slag, silica, and limestone powder) morphologies are seen. Also, it is seen that all the fillers are well distributed in the matrix; with the increase of filler content, the air voids increase. The tensile and compressive results indicate that adding fillers improves the composite's strengths, with up to a 20% increase compared to neat epoxy resin. However, when filler contents exceed 40%, the strengths decrease. Fracture toughness values also decrease with increasing filler content. Comparing the results with those of other studies indicates the similarity of trends. Cost‐strength and CO2eq‐strength curves were evaluated to assess the financial and environmental aspects. The composites show potential for cost efficiency but may have some environmental drawbacks compared to traditional construction materials like cement concrete. Abstract:Exploring green alternatives, this study assesses the life cycle environmental impacts of Luffa cylindrica‐reinforced epoxy composites. Notably, the 50% chemically treated Luffa cylindrica composite emerges as significantly superior, far surpassing the environmental performance of pure epoxy resin. These findings underscore Luffa cylindrica's remarkable potential as an eco‐friendly reinforcement, providing crucial insights for sustainable materials engineering practices. This research conducts a comprehensive cradle‐to‐gate life cycle assessment, comparing four distinct epoxy composites with each other and with the pure matrix. The composites investigated include epoxy resin reinforced with 25% and 50% untreated Luffa cylindrica fiber mats and 25% and 50% chemically treated Luffa cylindrica mats. The study defines the functional unit concerning the load at the fracture point and explores a real‐world scenario related to a potential industrial installation in southeastern Europe. The assessment utilizes 22 ReCiPe 2016 endpoint indicators to quantify impacts on human health, ecosystems, and resource availability. The findings indicate that the 50% chemically treated Luffa cylindrica‐reinforced epoxy has the least environmental impact, closely followed by the 50% untreated Luffa cylindrica. All four composites exhibit lower impacts than the pure epoxy resin. Notably, the 50% Luffa‐reinforced composites stand out as significantly environmentally favorable due to the substitution of fossil‐derived resin with natural fibers. This study underscores the potential of Luffa cylindrica as a promising and eco‐friendly reinforcement for epoxy composites.

Abstract:The study assessed the tensile, flexural, and impact properties of composite materials reinforced with flax fibers, employing three distinct resin types. The composite laminates were fabricated using three commercial resins: a conventional epoxy resin, an epoxy resin with a 31% weight concentration of bio-renewable content, and a recyclable methyl methacrylate infusion resin. This aims to assess if there exists a commercially available alternative to the traditional epoxy resin that can reduce the overall carbon footprint of composite materials. To investigate the influence of humidity on the mechanical behavior of the flax layers, a drying treatment was applied to the fibers before the infusion process. Micro-computed tomography analysis revealed that heat treatment resulted in a reduction of porosity, although it did not affect the mechanical response of the composite laminates. Moreover, laminates produced with non-recyclable and sustainable resins exhibited no significant change in tensile and flexural modulus. In contrast, those produced with recyclable resin demonstrated a slight reduction in the strengths of the composite laminates. Conversely, out-of-plane impact tests and repeated impact tests indicated that composites prepared with recyclable and bio-epoxy resin formulations present superior damage resistance to repeated impact compared to traditional epoxy resin.

Abstract:Fibre-reinforced polymers (FRPs) are widely used in industry due to their impressive strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance and high durability. One of the primary components of FRPs is synthetic resins, specifically epoxy, which has been identified as harmful to the environment. To address this concern, an eco-friendly alternative made from basalt fibres and bio resin has the potential to reduce the environmental impact. This study investigates Basalt Fibre-Reinforced Polymer (BFRP) laminates manufactured using two bio resins, AMPROTM BIO and Change Climate, comparing them to one conventional epoxy resin, WEST SYSTEM®, in terms of tensile modulus, strength and fracture toughness, as well as shear properties. The results indicate that BFRP laminates made with bio resins exhibit comparable or better mechanical properties to their conventional counterparts with tensile strength being between 6 and 17% more in bio resins compared to the conventional resin, thereby paving the way for further exploration of sustainable FRP laminates in future engineering applications.

Abstract:Journal of Reinforced Plastics and Composites, Ahead of Print. Synthetic-fiber-reinforced thermoset composites pose a significant threat of environmental pollution owing to their nonbiodegradable nature. To address this issue, it is essential to establish an adequate recycling strategy to reduce composite waste. In this study, we prepared flax-fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composites and modified a liquid thermoplastic resin (Elium 188 O) with recycled thermoset composite fillers. The introduction of 15% silane-treated fillers into the polymer matrix resulted in a substantial increase in the energy release rate and fracture toughness at the fracture initiation stage in modes I and II. Specifically, compared with the unmodified matrix, the energy release rate and fracture toughness were enhanced by 44.8% and 42.8% (for mode I) and 40.5% and 85.4% (for mode II), respectively. Similarly, the flexural strength and modulus increased by 25.1% and 34.8%, respectively. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of thermoplastic composites will deteriorate significantly because of the low bonding strength between virgin and recycled materials. However, the flax-fiber-reinforced composites with a 15% silane-treated filler-modified polymer matrix maintained Young's modulus and tensile strength of 89.9% and 91.2%, respectively, after 20 cycles of recycling. Overall, the strategy of inducing chemical-treated powdered composite wastes is a sufficient and low-labor-cost method to mitigate environmental pollution and improve the sustainability of recycled composite structures.

Abstract:Oil-based polymeric resins are widely used in the manufacture of fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites, contributing up to 70 % to their total weight. In an effort to reduce the dependence on oil-based feedstock, bio-based alternatives are being increasingly investigated. This study comprises a cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment (LCA) of a bio-based unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) and of glass-FRP (GFRP) composites produced with it using the vacuum infusion method. The bio-based unsaturated polyester prepolymer was developed by partially replacing oil-based chemical components with bio-based alternatives, namely fumaric acid, isosorbide, and 1,3-propanediol. Additionally, the use of the carcinogenic reactive diluent styrene was reduced by partial replacement (50 %) with 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate. As benchmark, an oil-based UPR obtained from a typical formulation has been considered. The environmental profiles of resins, composites and of the production technique have been analysed to identify their relative contribution to the environmental burdens, which were estimated considering various impact categories. The LCA study revealed lower environmental impact from the bio-based UPR compared to its oil-based counterpart in most categories, namely climate change (total) (CCT, −75 %), ozone depletion (OD, −73 %), photochemical ozone formation (PCOF, −27 %), resource use (fossils) (RUF, −35 %), resource use (minerals and metals) (RUMM, −87 %), non-renewable primary energy (NRPE, −35 %); on the other hand, the conventional UPR was found to perform better in acidification (AC, −54 %), eutrophication (freshwater) (EFW, −55 %), eutrophication (terrestrial) (ET, −76 %), and renewable primary energy (RPE, −92 %) categories. Fumaric acid, isosorbide, and 1,3-propanediol used in the bio-based UPR were identified as the major contributors to impact categories. However, carbon sequestration from the production of 1,3-propanediol and fumaric acid together is responsible for a reduction of 54 % in the CCT indicator relative to considering the impacts from the net carbon emitting monomers alone. Similarly, the bio-UPR based GFRP composite has been found to perform better in CCT (−31 %), OD (−48 %), PCOF (−6 %), RUF (−17 %), RUMM (−10 %), and NRPE (−17 %), while the oil-based counterpart outperformed in AC (−26 %), EFW (−31 %), ET (−46 %), and RPE (−80 %). The single score of EN 15804:2012 + A2:2019 method reveals the better environmental performance of both bio-based UPR and its corresponding GFRP composite comparing to the conventional counterparts. These findings have the potential to support the selection, optimization, and design of more sustainable fibre-polymer composite materials for several industries, namely for structural applications in the construction sector.

Recycling of fiber reinforced composites: Online mass spectrometric tracing, offline physicochemical speciation and toxicological evaluation of a pilot plant pyrolytic conversion

Abstract:The increasing demand for lightweight materials with exceptional stability and durability has resulted in a significant rise in fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) production. These materials find applications in various fields. However, the exceptional properties and diverse compositional range of FRPs pose challenges to conventional recycling strategies. Pyrolysis has emerged as a highly promising approach for separating the fibers from the polymer matrix. In this study, we employed thermal analysis coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry to investigate the pyrolysis process. Representative FRP showed a starting decomposition temperature of 300 °C and bisphenol A, styrene, alkenes, and phenols could be identified. The identified parameters were used to operate a pilot plant with a capacity of up to 50 kg/h FRP, and reactor products were directly analyzed with soft photoionization mass spectrometry. The findings demonstrated good agreement between the pilot plant results and laboratory experiments, particularly for smaller compounds (m/z<200). The non-condensable fraction showed a range of 17 to 22 MJ/m3 as lower heating value. Analysis of the recovered fibers (diameter between 6.20 and 8.05 μm) revealed residual coke, but no toxic fibers were detected, according to the World Health Organization's definition. Yet, the organic coating of the fibers contained small amounts of potentially harmful PAHs. A toxicological assessment using a multicellular in vitro model confirmed the low hazardous potential of the recovered fibers. The findings contribute to developing sustainable and environmentally friendly recycling strategies for FRP while addressing important aspects related to the safety and toxicological implications of the resulting chemicals and fibers.

Abstract:Progress in engineering research has shifted the interest from traditional monolithic materials to modern materials such as fibre reinforced composites (FRC). This paradigm shift can be attributed to the unique mechanical characteristics of FRCs such as high strength to weight ratio, good flexural strength, and fracture toughness. At present, synthetic composites dominate the automotive, aerospace, sporting, and construction industries despite serious drawbacks such as costly raw materials, high manufacturing costs, non-recyclability, toxicity, and non-biodegradability. To address these issues, naturally occurring plant fibres (such as jute, hemp, sisal) are being increasingly researched as potential reinforcements for biodegradable or non-biodegradable polymer matrices to produce environmentally friendly composites. In this study, sisal fibres were selected owing to their low production costs, sustainability, recyclability, and biodegradability. The hydrothermal ageing and mechanical characteristics of sisal fibre-reinforced epoxy (SFRE) composites were determined and compared with glass fibre-reinforced epoxy (GFRE) synthetic composites. Moreover, a first-of-its-kind numerical model have been developed to study the hydrothermal ageing and mechanical characteristics of SFRE, along with GFRE, using ANSYS software. Moreover, microstructural analysis of flexural tested GFRE and SFRE samples were carried out to identify the microstructural properties of the composites. Both experimental and numerical results exhibited an influence of short- or long-term hydrothermal treatment on the flexural properties of glass and sisal fibre-based composites. In the case of GFRE, the moisture uptake and fibre-matrix de-bonding existed, but it is less severe as compared to the SFRE composites. It was found that the dosage of sisal fibres largely determines the ultimate mechanical performance of the composite. Nonetheless, the experimental and numerical flexural strengths of SFRE were comparable to GFRE composites. This exhibited that the SFRE composites possess the potentiality as a sustainable material for advanced applications.

Abstract:Carbon fiber-reinforced polymer composites have permeated every aspect of modern life. Significant progress has been made in engineering communities to recycle composite wastes. While emerging recycling techniques can recover both fibers and resins at mild processing conditions, they are currently limited on the laboratory scale. It remains unclear if they could lead to market viability and environmental sustainability when they are used for industrial applications; if not, what the limiting factors are and how to improve them. In this study, the environmental and economic impacts of existing recycling techniques are studied. The average recycling costs are analyzed, and the environmental impacts are examined. It reveals that while the emerging techniques can recycle composites with extremely low environmental impact, their costs are significant compared to conventional techniques, primarily due to the expensive solvents and catalysts used to enable recycling. However, the study shows that it is possible to combine conventional waste processing techniques with emerging ones to enable recycling scenarios that are both cost-effective and environmentally beneficial. Overall, the study in this paper provides valuable insights for the design of future waste management supply chains and appropriate business models for the sustainable development of society.

Abstract:Natural fiber reinforcements have the potential to enhance mechanical properties, thereby improving performance and durability in various applications. In this study, we comprehensively evaluated the impact of environmental degradation over 120 days on reprocessed polypropylene (PP) reinforced with corn husk fiber (CHF) composites. The manufactured systems underwent rigorous analysis using various techniques, including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and tensile testing. These analyses revealed that climatic conditions significantly influenced (p < 0.05) the mechanical properties of all systems. Photodegradation led to surface morphological changes and chemical structures. Regardless, adding CHF filler proved a key factor, as it allowed for less susceptibility to environmental degradation than the reprocessed matrix. These findings, therefore, provide robust evidence supporting the feasibility of using CHF composites for manufacturing agricultural containers.

Abstract:This study investigates the integration of recycled and natural fibers with recycled concrete aggregates to develop environmentally friendly fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC), with a primary aim of maintaining or enhancing its properties. Four concrete mixtures, namely plain concrete (C-Plain), recycled steel fiber-reinforced concrete (C-RSF), recycled plastic fiber-reinforced concrete (C-RPF), and kenaf fiber-reinforced concrete (C-KF), were formulated and analyzed for their fresh, hardened, and durability characteristics. A 50% replacement of natural coarse aggregates' weight with recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) was implemented. By standardizing fiber volume fractions at 1.0% for all FRC mixtures, the study evaluated properties such as workability, dry density, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), compressive strength, modulus of elasticity, post-cracking flexural performance, modulus of rupture, flexural toughness, splitting tensile strength, and freeze-thaw resistance after 100 and 300 cycles. Testing involved three specimens for each parameter at 7 and 28 days. The results indicated positive effects on post-cracking flexural performance, modulus of rupture, flexural toughness, splitting tensile strength, and durability with the incorporation of recycled and natural fibers. Notably, C-RSF demonstrated the highest compressive strength (46.63 MPa), flexural toughness (64.35 kN-mm), and modulus of rupture (7.46 MPa) compared to other FRC composites. Additionally, it exhibited minimal weight loss (2.18% and 3.07%) after freeze-thaw cycles, indicating exceptional durability. C-RSF exhibited superior performance, while C-KF showed enhancement slightly below that of C-RSF. Although not reaching the level of C-RSF, C-RPF positively influenced concrete performance. Compressive response either maintained performance or exhibited marginal reduction. The findings carry significant implications for developing environmentally conscious construction materials with enhanced mechanical and durability properties, thereby advancing sustainable construction practices.

Abstract:Climate change, access, and monopolies to raw material sources as well as politically motivated trade barriers are among the factors responsible for a shortage of raw materials. In the plastics industry, resource conservation can be achieved by substituting commercially available petrochemical-based plastics with components made from renewable raw materials. Innovation potentials are often not used due to a lack of information on the use of bio-based materials, efficient processing methods, and product technologies or because the costs for new developments are too high. In this context, the use of renewable resources such as fiber-reinforced polymeric composites based on plants has become an important criterion for the development and production of components and products in all industrial sectors. Bio-based engineering thermoplastics with cellulose fibers can be used as substitutes because of their higher strength and heat resistance, but the processing of this composite is still challenging. In this study, composites were prepared and investigated using bio-based polyamide (PA) as a polymer matrix in combination with a cellulosic fiber and, for comparison purposes, a glass fiber. A co-rotating twin-screw extruder was used to produce the composites with different fiber contents. For the mechanical properties, tensile tests and charpy impact tests were performed. Compared to glass fiber, reinforced PA 6.10 and PA 10.10, a significantly higher elongation at break with regenerated cellulose fibers, can be achieved. PA 6.10 and PA 10.10 achieve significantly higher impact strengths with the regenerated cellulose fibers than the composites with glass fibers. In the future, bio-based products will also be used in indoor applications. For characterization, the VOC emission GC-MS analysis and odor evaluation methods were used. The VOC emissions (quantitative) were at a low level but the results of the odor tests of selected samples showed values mostly above the required limit values.

Abstract:This study presents the findings related to the selection of composite structures for materials with respect to the effectiveness of their lightweight design and environmental impact during the raw material manufacturing phases. The primary raw materials considered were glass fiber, PVC for the core, and polyester resin. In addition, using the same design conditions, such as bottom load, impregnation rate, and production method, a reverse engineering approach was applied to transform the sandwich structure into a single laminate structure, allowing for a comparative quantitative analysis of the reduction in lightweight effectiveness. The results revealed that the sandwich structure was approximately 42.44% lighter than that of the reverse-engineered single-skin laminate structure. A life cycle evaluation was also conducted, and the raw materials required for hull construction were analyzed with SimaPro 9.0 as the LCA tool software, Ecoinvent 3 for inventory analysis, and the ReCiPe 2016 method for environmental impact analysis. PVC foam and polyester resin were identified as highly hazardous for both human and environmental health, whereas fiberglass exhibited the lowest emissions among the materials considered. Furthermore, the sandwich structure offered greater environmental advantages across all damage endpoints than the single-skin laminates. This finding highlights the potential of sandwich structures as a more sustainable option. In practical terms, enhancing the bending strength of the core material in sandwich structures can reduce the thickness of the outer and inner skin members, thereby reducing the weight of ships and significantly reducing potential health risks to human worker health, harm to the ecosystem, and resource demands.

Abstract:Increasing environmental awareness has driven a shift in furniture production from traditional materials, such as wood and wood-based panels, to sustainable and environmentally friendly alternatives, such as natural-fiber-reinforced (NFR) composites. Environmental consciousness has become a key factor in both production and consumer choices, with growing demand for sustainably sourced materials, eco-friendly manufacturing processes, and durable furniture that helps reduce the impact of disposable products on the environment. This paper analyzes various requirements for natural-fiber-reinforced polymer composites used in furniture applications, including performance, structural–functional, ecological, economical, and safety requirements. It discusses factors influencing the performance of composite materials, such as the selection of matrix and reinforcing fibers, the matrix-to-reinforcement ratio, and the choice of manufacturing technology, as well as the compatibility and bonding between the matrix and fibers. Additionally, several standards commonly used to determine the mechanical, physical, and chemical properties of these materials are presented.

Abstract:The explosive growth of the global market for Carbon-Fiber-Reinforced Polymers (CFRP) and the lack of a closing loop strategy of composite waste have raised environmental concerns. Circular economy studies, including Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Life Cycle Costing (LCC), have investigated composite recycling and new bio-based materials to substitute both carbon fibers and matrices. However, few studies have addressed composite repair. Studies focused on bio-based composites coupled with recycling and repairing are also lacking. Within this framework, the paper aims at presenting opportunities and challenges of the new thermosetting composite developed at the laboratory including the criteria of repairing, recycling, and use of bio-based materials in industrial applications through an ex ante LCA coupled with LCC. Implementing the three criteria mentioned above would reduce the environmental impact from 50% to 86% compared to the baseline scenario with the highest benefits obtained by implementing the only repairing. LCC results indicate that manufacturing and repairing parts built from bio-based CFRP is economically sustainable. However, recycling can only be economically sustainable under a specific condition. Managerial strategies are proposed to mitigate the uncertainties of the recycling business. The findings of this study can provide valuable guidance on supporting decisions for companies making strategic plans.

Abstract:Journal of Composite Materials, Ahead of Print. Regarding environmental preservation, the upcycling of plastics from petroleum source is a consistent alternative. This work intended to investigate melting extruded composites of post-consumer HDPE (rHDPE) filled with pristine zirconium phosphate (ZrP), aluminum hydroxide [Al(OH)3] and aluminum hydroxide modifying-zirconium phosphate [ZrPOct/Al(OH)3]. Physico-mechanical and flame retardancy were assessed. FTIR revealed that rHDPE brought some degree of oxidative degradation probably from its cleaning process and/or processing. By nuclear magnetic resonance at time domain, rHDPE showed three relaxation domains. Fillers induced the lowering of rHDPE relaxation time owing to polymer/filler by hydrogen bonds. Diffraction pattern of rHDPE/Al(OH)3 and rHDPE/ZrPOct/Al(OH)3 indicated better fillers' dispersion. Fillers changed rHDPE crystallinity degree and thermal stability but rheologic properties were invariable. For all composites, elastic modulus increased (up to 17%) indicating stiffening. Yield strength did not change but stress and strain at break decreased. For the composites, SEM/EDS showed better dispersion and distribution of ZrP and ZrPOct/Al(OH)3 particles. It was assumed that ZrP and ZrPOct/Al(OH)3 greatly increased the flame retardancy. The work corroborates the importance of polymers' upcycling, and it is in consonance with the objectives of 2030 Agenda released by United Nations.
