Abstract:Using children’s literature to support mathematics instruction has been connected to positive academic outcomes and learning dispositions; however, less is known about the use of audiovisual based narrative mediums to support student mathematical learning experiences. The current exploratory, qualitative study involved teaching three lessons based on challenging, problem solving tasks to two classes of Australian Year (Grade) 5 students (10 and 11 year olds). These tasks were developed from various narratives, each portrayed through a different medium (movie clip, short film, picture story book). Post lesson interviews were undertaken with 24 students inviting them to compare and contrast this lesson sequence with their usual mathematics instruction. Drawing on a self-determination theory lens, our analysis revealed that these lessons were experienced by students as both highly enjoyable and mathematically challenging. More specifically, it was found that presenting mathematics tasks based on rich and familiar contexts and providing meaningful choices about how to approach their mathematical work supported student autonomy. In addition, there was evidence that the narrative presentation supported student understanding of the mathematics through making the tasks clearer and more accessible, whilst the audiovisual mediums (movie clip, short film) in particular provided a dynamic representation of key mathematical ideas (e.g., transformation and scale). Students indicated an eclectic range of preferences in terms of their preferred narrative mediums for exploring mathematical ideas. Our findings support the conclusion that educators and researchers focused on the benefits of teaching mathematics through picture story books consider extending their definition of narrative to encompass other mediums, such as movie clips and short films.

Abstract:Renewed conversations about close reading in relation to implementation of the Common Core Standards offer numerous opportunities to hone both traditional and innovative instructional practices. Two experienced teacher educators explore the features and benefits of collaborative read-alouds, using crossover picture books, the importance of attending to student voice in contemporary learning environments, and deepening student interactions with texts. The article also emphasizes the role of teachers’ reflective practices, critical thinking, and the need to look beyond the Common Core Standards when planning for instruction. A resource list of twenty recommended picture books for collaborative read-aloud is included.
Shared Picture Book Reading in Early Mathematics: a Systematic Literature Review

Abstract:Shared picture book reading (SPBR) refers to an activity in which the adult reads aloud a picture book to children and which often includes interactions about the picture book outside of the actual reading. In this systematic review, we analyzed the characteristics of the picture books that are used to stimulate early mathematics, and the frequency, quality, and effectiveness of SPBR in early mathematics. Additionally, we looked at the association between the frequency, quality, and effectiveness of this activity and the characteristics of the picture book, child, reader, and context. A systematic search in four databases yielded 49 articles that were eligible for inclusion. First, results showed that picture books contain characteristics that may both stimulate and hinder children's mathematical development. Second, the frequency of SPBR was hardly studied, constraining current insights into this topic. Third, the quality of SPBR was mainly studied via the number and the type of mathematical utterances made by the child and/or the reader, with findings pointing to a rich variety of utterances in terms of both number and type. Fourth, SPBR was shown effective to stimulate children's mathematical development. SPBR frequency, quality and effectiveness was hardly studied in association with picture book, child, reader, and context characteristics making it difficult to draw conclusions about their complex interplay. We end with gaps in the available research on SPBR in the domain of mathematics and offer suggestions for future research.

Abstract:This article describes how one second-grade teacher implemented Follow the Reader, her term for dyad reading. Common Core expects students to read increasingly complex texts. Teachers can implement dyad reading with this end in mind. It is a modified version of the neurological impress method in which a lead reader and an assisted reader sit side by side and read a shared text aloud in unison. As this article demonstrates, this strategy can be implemented successfully with small groups or an entire class and is effective with both English-proficient and English-learning children. She included fiction and nonfiction texts, daily class discussions, book logs to maintain student accountability, and discussion between partners about texts. She provided modeling for students and gave them time to practice procedures.

Mathematics Learning in Groups: Analyzing Equity in Two Cooperative Activity Structures

Abstract:Many mathematics classrooms use cooperative learning to support equitable learning environments for all students. Past research in the field has focused primarily on increasing achievement rather than on contexts that support equitable interactions. This year-long study in 3 secondary mathematics classes compares 2 activity structures—a group quiz and a presentation—by examining group interaction within the 2 activities. The analysis shows that groups constructed a range of work practices, including a practice focused on collaboration, one focused on individual work, and one focused on “helping.” In addition, students adopted a variety of positions, including expert, novice, in-between, and facilitator. In this data corpus, experts tended to dominate interactions during group quizzes, whereas presentation preparations were more equitable, particularly when a student was positioned as a facilitator. Based on the analysis, suggestions are provided for structuring more equitable mathematics group work.

Abstract:ABSTRACT A discourse-oriented classroom activity in an ethnically mixed, first grade classroom is studied from an interpretive perspective, integrating ethnographic observation and fine-grained conversational analysis. “Sharing time” is a recurring activity where children are called upon to describe an object or give a narrative account about some past event to the entire class. The teacher, through her questions and comments, tries to help the children structure and focus their discourse. This kind of activity serves to bridge the gap between the child's home-based oral discourse competence and the acquisition of literate discourse features required in written communication. Through a detailed characterization of the children's sharing styles, evidence is provided suggesting that children from different backgrounds come to school with different narrative strategies and prosodic conventions for giving narrative accounts. When the child's discourse style matches the teacher's own literate style and expectations, collaboration is rhythmically synchronized and allows for informal practice and instruction in the development of a literate discourse style. For these children, sharing time can be seen as a kind of oral preparation for literacy . In contrast, when the child's narrative style is at variance with the teacher's expectations, collaboration is often unsuccessful and, over time, may adversely affect school performance and evaluation. Sharing time, then, can either provide or deny access to key literacy-related experiences, depending, ironically, on the degree to which teacher and child start out “sharing” a set of discourse conventions and interpretive strategies. Abstract:The PairWork mini-unit discussed in this article combines the importance of middle school students learning how to work successfully with another student to accomplish a common goal while incorporating essential principles of social studies curriculum. The mini-unit utilizes six picture books featuring history’s Dynamic Duos, or pairs of historical figures who have had a lasting impact on the world as we know it by working together. I present a framework for the mini-unit along with other unit essentials for middle level educators to consider during implementation. The article continues with a description of the three phases of the mini-unit, which include lessons and recommendations on how to incorporate students practicing social skills to effectively work with a partner while learning how historical Dynamic Duos did the same.

Abstract:A descriptive study was undertaken to look at the interactions, goals and purposes of four mothers as they shared two narrative and two expository texts with their preschoolers over a six-month period. The study was based within the framework of Vygotsky's (1978) theory of literacy and learning. A key factor in Vygotsky's theory is the social interaction between the literate adult and the young child. Informal observations of literacy in the home, discussions with mothers, and analysis of video recordings of story reading sessions revealed differences in the way literacy was constructed. Despite these differences there were also some similarities. Each mother in her own way was a successful teacher of her child and there was some support for Vygotsky's theory; through verbally mediated assisted performance the children were learning and were taught about literacy. However, there were some areas where mothers did not increase the challenge for their children as might be expected with the Vygotskian model. These findings prompted me to reflect on my practice and that of other early childhood teachers when sharing books with young children.

Abstract:Few studies on the role of bilingualism in mathematics classrooms explore the intersection of biliteracy, language use, mathematical discourse, and numeracy—especially at the middle school level. Drawing from biliteracy development theory and reform mathematics education literature, this qualitative case study of a dual-language mathematics classroom shows how English language learners (ELLs)/bilinguals use their first (L1) and second language (L2) as resources to access advanced mathematical curriculum. The article provides glimpses of instructional strategies that encourage mathematics discourse and biliteracy development. Encouraging secondary bilingual students to solve non-routine mathematical problems collaboratively may not only promote student engagement but also promote binumerate development.

Geometry-Related Children's Literature Improves the Geometry Achievement and Attitudes of Second-Grade Students

Abstract:Use of mathematics‐related literature can engage students' interest and increase their understanding of mathematical concepts. A quasi‐experimental study of two second‐grade classrooms assessed whether daily inclusion of geometry‐related literature in the classroom improved attitudes toward geometry and achievement in geometry. Consistent with the hypothesis, only the students in the classroom with a strong emphasis on geometry‐related children's literature showed a significant improvement in their attitudes about geometry over time. While both classes improved their geometry performance over the 4 weeks of the study, the class with a strong emphasis on geometry‐related literature improved significantly more (51.2%) than the control class (33.47%). Children's literature can provide a useful and interesting context in which students can develop their understanding of geometry.

Abstract:This paper reports on a qualitative investigation into the use of Show and Tell tablet technology in mathematics classrooms. A Show and Tell application (app) allows the user to capture voice and writing or text in real time. Described here are the perceptions of 11 teachers during and after their exploration into the use of Show and Tell in their primary and secondary classrooms. These perceptions were used to evaluate Show and Tell tablet technology against a framework of student engagement and effective pedagogy. The results of the study indicated that the teachers perceived both the level and the quality of the students’ engagement were high. Using Show and Tell apps enabled the teachers to enact effective pedagogy within their classroom practices. Importantly, through the use of Show and Tell recordings, students’ thinking became visible to themselves, their teachers and other students in the class. This thinking then formed the basis of robust discussions and negotiation about the mathematical concepts and the strategies the students used to solve problems.

Abstract:This study explored the connection between shared storybook readings and children’s imagination, social interactions, affect, prosocial behavior, and social play. A secondary goal investigated the relationship between social play and vocabulary learning. Participants were 44 young children (17 boys, 27 girls) attending preschool in the northeastern United States. Ages ranged from 4.1 to 5.6 years. The majority of the children were from Mexican, Central American, Brazilian, and African-American ethnic heritages. We observed children before and after repeated shared storybook readings that incorporated story props over multiple sessions. We recorded children’s imaginative ability, social interaction, affective, helping, and social play behaviors using a time sampling approach. Children also completed the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test –Four (PPVT-IV). We found shared storybook reading experiences connected positively to social, cognitive, and emotional developmental outcomes as well as social play. Pretend play experiences also positively connected with receptive vocabulary. Our findings support existing literature.

Abstract:Children develop their language when they explore and talk about literary texts. In this study, we explore the design of shared digital reading as a basis for critical reflection on the reading situation in an institutional context with its given opportunities and limitations. We examine six videotaped readings of one specific picture book app, with a focus on the strategies used by teachers in early childhood education and care institutions to control children’s access to the medium and the types of verbal engagement (about the story and about the medium) that are generated by these different strategies. We use qualitative and quantitative analysis of video data. A qualitative categorization of the readings reveals the strategies Show, Show & Share, and Share. In analyzing the participants’ verbal and multisensory engagement, we find that the Show strategy generates more utterances, especially about the story, as well as more time spent on dialogue.

Adapted shared reading at school for minimally verbal students with autism

Abstract:Almost nothing is known about the capacity of minimally verbal students with autism to develop literacy skills. Shared reading is a regular practice in early education settings and is widely thought to encourage language and literacy development. There is some evidence that children with severe disabilities can be engaged in adapted shared reading activities. The current study examines the impact of teacher-led adapted shared reading activities on engagement and story comprehension in minimally verbal 5-6-year-old children with autism using a multiple baseline/alternating treatment design. Four students and three teachers participated. Teachers conducted adapted shared reading activities with modified books (visual supports, three-dimensional objects, simplified text) and used specific strategies for increasing student engagement. Student performance during adapted activities was compared to performance during standard shared reading sessions. Results: All four students showed increased story comprehension and engagement during adapted shared reading. Average percentage of session engaged was 87%-100% during adapted sessions, compared with 41%-52% during baseline. Average number of correct responses to story comprehension questions was 4.2-4.8 out of 6 during adapted sessions compared with 1.2-2 during baseline. Visual supports, tactile objects, and specific teaching strategies offer ways for minimally verbal students to meaningfully participate in literacy activities. Future research should investigate adapted shared reading activities implemented classroom-wide as well as joint engagement, language, and literacy outcomes after using such activities over time.

Abstract:Abstract In this article, we direct attention to what becomes critical in teaching activities for toddlers (1–3-year-olds) to learn the meaning of numbers. One activity we thoroughly explore is interactive book reading, based on previous research indicating positive learning outcomes from this type of mathematical activity, as it has shown to simultaneously embrace the child’s perspective and encourage interaction and ‘number talk.’ A specially designed picture book presenting small quantities was developed, and variation theory principles were embedded in both the book design and the teaching acts. Through qualitative analyses, we aim to identify what is critical in the interactive book reading sessions for toddlers to discern essential aspects of numbers, with a specific focus on the conditions for making modes of representations into resources for learning. Preschool teachers frequently read the book to 27 toddlers over the course of a year. Video documentation of their reading sessions was analyzed, and exposed the significance of addressing the child’s perspective when choosing what representation to emphasize and in what ways connections within and between representations can be made. Thus, the study contributes knowledge on the teaching of numbers with toddlers, and problematizes as well as extends the potential of interactive book reading as a quality-enhancing educational tool.

Abstract:The early years, prior to school, are a significant time period for the mathematical development of children. Parents play an important role in the early learning of their children through creating an inspiring home learning environment in everyday situations. Considering that the first mathematics learning takes place at home and at kindergarten, parents’ involvement supports the academic achievements of young children learning not only during their first years but also during the whole school time period, so parents and pre-school-teachers should work together in a trusting relationship. The KERZ project discussed in this chapter shows that opportunities for a successful cooperation between parents and kindergarten staff have positive benefits for children’s mathematics learning, at least in the short term. This project is an intervention study with a pre-post-test design investigating the impact on mathematics learning of families with young children regularly playing and reading games and books with mathematical content, like board, dice, and construction games and picture books dealing with counting, enumerating, and Piagetian pre-numerical competencies. These games and books are part of a “treasure chest” located at the kindergarten to be borrowed and used only at home.
Oral Language and Emergent Literacy Strategies Used by Australian Early Childhood Teachers During Shared Book Reading

Abstract:The use of shared book reading is regarded as valuable to support young children to build their oral language and emergent literacy skills in preschool classrooms. Quantitative and qualitative features of early childhood teachers' (ECTs') shared book reading practices are important contributors to quality shared book reading experiences. The aim of this study was to gain in-depth insights about the range and frequency of extratextual oral language and emergent literacy utterances (utterances beyond the story text) used by ECTs during shared book reading with preschoolers as well as their use of paralinguistic and nonverbal features. Video-recordings were made of 32 ECTs engaging in shared book reading with their four-year-old preschool class. ECTs' extratextual utterances and their paralinguistic and nonverbal features were classified using a validated observational checklist: The "Emergent Literacy and Language Early Childhood Checklist for Teachers" (ELLECCT). Results showed ECTs frequently used responsive statements such as commenting on the story or acknowledging or imitating children's utterances in book-related talk. ECTs most commonly asked closed questions during shared book reading and regularly used paralinguistic and nonverbal features such as prosody and volume in order to engage children. In contrast, ECTs used only a limited range of dialogic reading prompts and explicit vocabulary strategies and only infrequently expanded children's utterances. Notably, ECTs rarely used strategies to target children's print knowledge or phonological awareness. Although extratextual dialogue was used regularly by ECTs during shared book reading, targeted techniques that are known to build oral language and emergent literacy were not consistently demonstrated. These results suggest missed opportunities for preschool children to benefit from shared book reading.

The power of digital story in early mathematics education: Innovative approaches for children with intellectual disabilities

Abstract:This study explored the effectiveness of digital story interventions in improving early math skills in kindergarten children with mild intellectual disabilities. Digital stories are multimedia narratives that combine text, images, and audio to enhance learning experience. This experimental study used a pretest-posttest control group design. The intervention group consisted of 15 children who participated in an 8-week digital story intervention targeting early math skills. A matched control group was used to control for sex differences. Data were collected through the TEMA-3 test scores and teacher and child feedback. Post-intervention, the experimental group showed significant improvements in TEMA-3 test scores compared to the control group. Teachers and children reported a positive perception of the intervention’s social validity, highlighting enhanced engagement and understanding of math concepts. This study demonstrated that digital story-based education is a promising approach for improving early math skills in children with mild intellectual disabilities. These findings suggest potential implications for integrating digital storytelling into special education curricula and highlight avenues for future research in this field.

Abstract:Supported eText for students with visual impairments in mathematics has a promising, emerging literature base, although little of the existing research focuses on implementation within a classroom setting. This qualitative study sought to understand the use of supported eText to deliver algebra to students with visual impairments enrolled in algebra mathematics courses. The study also sought to explore supported eText in contrast to students' traditional means of accessing an algebra text. The main results suggest supported eText holds potential in terms of delivering mathematics content; however, more research and more reflection on the field is needed regarding this approach as a sole means of presenting text. Implications for teacher professional development and implementation practices are discussed.
Effects of using picture books in mathematics teaching and learning: A systematic literature review from 2000–2022

Abstract:Using picture books in teaching is a popular trend in early childhood education. However, little attention has been paid to such pedagogy in mathematics learning. For this article, we reviewed 16 empirical studies from the past two decades (2000–2022) regarding the use of picture books in mathematics instruction, in order to investigate their effects on mathematics learning in students. We analyse and critically assess approaches used to integrate picture books into mathematics instruction, the overall effects of such integration on the mathematical performance of students, and the factors that inhibit or enhance these effects. The findings of our review reveal that most of the selected studies targeted early mathematics education, with only a minority addressing secondary education. Various approaches are available for the integration of picture books into mathematics teaching, having various positive effects on student attitudes toward mathematics, as well as their academic performance and mathematical representation ability. The reported inhibiting factors for teachers using picture books in teaching included a lack of pedagogical knowledge and confidence, time constraints, resource constraints and doubts regarding the expected outcomes. Conversely, the enhancing factors included early educational stage (especially the pre‐school level), perceived pedagogical benefits, desire to improve teaching and enabling social norms. Suggestions for future research focused on the integration of picture books into classroom teaching are also discussed.
