Abstract:Radiographic imaging with muons, also called Muography, is based on the measurement of the absorption of muons, generated by the interaction of cosmic rays with the earth's atmosphere, in matter. Muons are elementary particles with high penetrating power, a characteristic that makes them capable of crossing bodies of dimensions of the order of hundreds of meters. The interior of bodies the size of a pyramid or a volcano can be seen directly with the use of this technique, which can rely on highly segmented muon trackers. Since the muon flux is distributed in energy over a wide spectrum that depends on the direction of incidence, the main difference with radiography made with X-rays is in the source. The source of muons is not tunable, neither in energy nor in direction; to improve the signal-to-noise ratio, muography requires large instrumentation, long time data acquisition and high background rejection capacity. Here, we present the principles of the Muography, illustrating how radiographic images can be obtained, starting from the measurement of the attenuation of the muon flux through an object. It will then be discussed how recent technologies regarding artificial intelligence can give an impulse to this methodology in order to improve its results.

Abstract:The pyramids of the Giza plateau have fascinated visitors since ancient times and are the last of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world still standing. It has been half a century since Luiz Alvarez and his team used cosmic-ray muon imaging to look for hidden chambers in Khafres Pyramid. Advances in instrumentation for High-Energy Physics (HEP) allowed a new survey, ScanPyramids, to make important new discoveries at the Great Pyramid (Khufu) utilizing the same basic technique that the Alvarez team used, but now with modern instrumentation. The Exploring the Great Pyramid Mission plans to field a very-large muon telescope system that will be transformational with respect to the field of cosmic-ray muon imaging. We plan to field a telescope system that has upwards of 100 times the sensitivity of the equipment that has recently been used at the Great Pyramid, will image muons from nearly all angles and will, for the first time, produce a true tomographic image of such a large structure.

A New Algorithm to Improve Imaging Quality for Muon Tomography

Abstract:In recent years, Muography has been applied in many areas such as geological prospecting and national security. With the development of Muography, the demand for precise algorithms is on the rise. This paper focuses on Muon Tomography and proposes a new Muon Tomography algorithm that decomposes muon scattering angles into changes in azimuthal angle φ and polar angle θ in a spherical coordinate system. Calculate their change ratios to determine the equivalent scattering point. This algorithm divides the calculation of muon scattering points into three steps to enhance the equivalent accuracy of the muon trajectories. The new algorithm is applied to process both simulation and experimental data. It combines three methods for evaluating imaging quality: the SSIM(Structural Similarity Index Measure) algorithm, Ratio of Effective Scattering Point, and Spectrum of the Distance from Scattering Points to the Origin. These methods are used to compare the image quality of the new algorithm with the PoCA algorithm. The results show that compared to the PoCA algorithm, the new algorithm significantly improves the image quality without angle selection, nearly doubling the fraction of effective scattering points. When imaging low-Z materials where the PoCA algorithm is not suitable, the new algorithm also effectively enhances the imaging quality. Also, the imaging quality can be further optimized by continuously iterating the boundary of the imaging area.

Abstract:Muon tomography is a relatively new method of radiography that utilizes muons from cosmic rays and their multiple Coulomb scattering property to distinguish materials. Researchers around the world have been developing various detection systems and image reconstruction algorithms for muon tomography applications, such as nuclear reactor monitoring and cargo inspection for contraband. This paper studies the principle in image reconstruction of muon tomography. Implementation and comparison of some popular algorithms with our simulation dataset will be presented as well as some ideas of future improvements for better image qualities and material discrimination performances.

Abstract:High-energy muons generated from cosmic-ray particle showers have been shown to exhibit properties ideal for imaging the interior of large structures. This paper explores the possibility of using a single portable muon detector in conjunction with image reconstruction methods used in nuclear medicine to reconstruct a 3D image of the interior of critical infrastructure such as the Zero Energy Deuterium (ZED-2) research reactor at Canadian Nuclear Laboratories' Chalk River site. The ZED-2 reactor core and muon detector arrangement are modeled in GEANT4 and Monte Carlo measurements of the resultant muon throughput and angular distribution at several angles of rotation around the reactor are generated. Statistical analysis is then performed on these measurements based on the well-defined flux and angular distribution of muons expected near the surface of the earth. The results of this analysis are shown to produce reconstructed images of the spatial distribution of nuclear fuel within the core for multiple fuel configurations. This one-sided tomography concept is a possible candidate for examining the internal structure of larger critical facilities, for example the Fukushima Daiichi power plant where the integrity of the containment infrastructure and the location of the reactor fuel is unknown.

Abstract:A feasibility demonstration of three-dimensional (3D) muon tomography was performed for infrastructure equivalent targets using the proposed portable muography detector. For the target, we used two sets of lead blocks placed at different heights. The detector consists of two muon position-sensitive detectors, made of plastic scintillating fibers (PSFs) and multi-pixel photon counters (MPPCs) with an angular resolution of 8 msr. The maximum likelihood-expectation maximization (ML-EM) method was used for the 3D imaging reconstruction of the muography simulation and measurement. For both simulation and experiment, the reconstructed positions of the blocks produce consistent results with prior knowledge of the blocks' arrangement. This result demonstrates the potential of the 3D tomographic imaging of infrastructure by using eleven detection positions for portable muography detectors to image infrastructure scale targets.

Abstract:We present results from a detailed GEANT4 simulation of a proposed Muon Tomography System that employs compact Micro Pattern Gas Detectors with high spatial resolution. A basic Point-Of-Closest-Approach algorithm is applied to reconstructed muon tracks for forming 3D tomographic images of interrogated targets. Criteria for discriminating materials by Z and discrimination power achieved by the technique for simple scenarios are discussed for different integration times. The simulation shows that Muon Tomography can clearly distinguish high-Z material from low-Z and medium-Z material. We have studied various systematic effects that affect the performance of the MT and the discrimination power. The implications of the simulation results for the planned development of a prototype MT station are discussed.

Abstract:Muon scattering tomography (MST) is a promising technique in nuclear security inspection, utilizing its multiple scattering property which is sensitive to elements with high atomic numbers, and is also correlated with the material density. A proper imaging reconstruction method is essential for revealing the spatial distribution of materials within an object from measurements. This work proposes a new imaging reconstruction method called "big voxel and angle capping". The scattering angle is reconstructed using the conventional Point of Closest Approach (PoCA) method. In the new method, reconstructed scattering angles belonging to voxels in an l×m×n matrix are aggregated into the center voxel, termed the "big voxel". This significantly reduces statistical fluctuations in each big voxel. Subsequently, the influence of large scattering angles on determining material densities in big voxels is mitigated using a capping angle. The proposed algorithm is tested on the experimental data comprising approximately 1.8×104 muon scattering events detected in ∼ 24 h. The mean square error (MSE) and the structural similarity index measure (SSIM) indices are employed to quantitatively assess the imaging quality and optimize the new method. After scanning the two major parameters, the optimal parameter space is achieved with the big voxel size of ∼ 9, and the capping angle of ∼4∘ for tungsten blocks. The imaging quality is more sensitive to the capping angle than the big voxel size. An appropriate capping angle effectively removes large artifacts in reconstructed images caused by muon events with large scattering angles. This method is efficient in terms of both time and storage consumption.

First experimental study of multiple orientation muon tomography, with image optimization in sparse data environments

Abstract:Due to the high penetrating power of cosmic ray muons, they can be used to probe very thick and dense objects. As charged particles, they can be tracked by ionization detectors, determining the position and direction of the muons. With detectors on either side of an object, particle direction changes can be used to extract scattering information within an object. This can be used to produce a scattering intensity image within the object related to density and atomic number. Such imaging is typically performed with a single detector-object orientation, taking advantage of the more intense downward flux of muons, producing planar imaging with some depth-of-field information in the third dimension. Several simulation studies have been published with multi-orientation tomography, which can form a three-dimensional representation faster than a single orientation view. In this work we present the first experimental multiple orientation muon tomography study. Experimental muon-scatter based tomography was performed using a concrete filled steel drum with several different metal wedges inside, between detector planes. Data was collected from different detector-object orientations by rotating the steel drum. The data collected from each orientation were then combined using two different tomographic methods. Results showed that using a combination of multiple depth-of-field reconstructions, rather than a traditional inverse Radon transform approach used for CT, resulted in more useful images for sparser data. As cosmic ray muon flux imaging is rate limited, the imaging techniques were compared for sparse data. Using the combined depth-of-field reconstruction technique, fewer detector-object orientations were needed to reconstruct images that could be used to differentiate the metal wedge compositions.

Abstract:Imaging methods based on the absorption or scattering of atmospheric muons, collectively named under the neologism "muography", exploit the abundant natural flux of muons produced from cosmic-ray interactions in the atmosphere. Recent years have seen a steep rise in the development of muography methods in a variety of innovative multidisciplinary approaches to study the interior of natural or man-made structures, establishing synergies between usually disconnected academic disciplines such as particle physics, geology, and archaeology. Muography also bears promise of immediate societal impact through geotechnical investigations, nuclear waste surveys, homeland security, and natural hazard monitoring. Our aim is to provide an introduction to this vibrant research area, starting from the physical principles at the basis of the methods and reviewing several recent developments in the application of muography methods to specific use cases, without any pretence of exhaustiveness. We then describe the main detector technologies and imaging methods, including their combination with conventional techniques from other disciplines, where appropriate. Finally, we discuss critically some outstanding issues that affect a broad variety of applications, and the current state of the art in addressing them.

Abstract:Muon tomography is an advanced technology to non-destructively detect high atomic number materials. It exploits the multiple Coulomb scattering information of muon to reconstruct the scattering density image of the traversed object. Because of the statistics of muon scattering, the measurement error of system and the data incompleteness, the reconstruction is always accompanied with a certain level of interference, which will influence the reconstructed spatial resolution. While statistical noises can be reduced by extending the measuring time, system parameters determine the ultimate spatial resolution that one system can reach. In this paper, an effective frequency-domain model is proposed to analyze the reconstructed spatial resolution of muon tomography. The proposed method modifies the resolution analysis in conventional computed tomography (CT) to fit the different imaging mechanism in muon scattering tomography. The measured scattering information is described in frequency domain, then a relationship between the measurements and the original image is proposed in Fourier domain, which is named as "Muon Central Slice Theorem". Furthermore, a preliminary analytical expression of the ultimate reconstructed spatial is derived, and the simulations are performed for validation. While the method is able to predict the ultimate spatial resolution of a given system, it can also be utilized for the optimization of system design and construction.
Simulation of Muon Tomography Projections to Image the Pyramids of Giza

Abstract:Purpose: A geometric simulation of a possible two-plane detector was developed to test the abilities of the detector to generate high-resolution images of the Great Pyramid using muon tomography. Methods and Materials: Trajectory range, angular resolution, and acceptance of the detector were calculated with a simulation. Trajectories and the corresponding sinogram space covered were simulated first with one detector in one location, and then two moving detectors on adjacent sides of the pyramid. The resolution at the center slice of the pyramid was calculated using the angular resolution of the detector. Results: The simulation returned trajectory range encompassing the pyramid and peak angular resolution of .0004sr. Sinogram space covered by one position was inadequate, however two moving detectors on adjacent sides of the pyramid cover a significant portion. Resolution at the center of the pyramid is roughly 3m. Conclusions: The simulation provides a way to calculate the detector positions needed to cover an adequate amount of sinogram space for high-resolution cosmic-ray tomographic reconstruction of the Great Pyramids. Abstract:In cultural heritage conservation, it is increasingly common to rely on non-destructive imaging methods based on the absorption or scattering of photons ($X$ or $\gamma$ rays) or neutrons. However, physical and practical issues limit these techniques: their penetration depth may be insufficient for large and dense objects, they require transporting the objects of interest to dedicated laboratories, artificial radiation is hazardous and may induce activation in the material under study. Muons are elementary particles abundantly and freely produced in cosmic-ray interactions in the atmosphere. Their absorption and scattering in matter are characteristically dependent on the density and elemental composition of the material that they traverse, which offers the possibility of exploiting them for sub-surface remote imaging. This novel technique, nicknamed "muography", has been applied in use cases ranging from geophysics to archaeology to nuclear safety, but it has been so far under-explored for a vast category of cultural heritage objects that are relatively large (from decimeters to human size) and dense (stone, metals). The development of portable muon detectors makes muography particularly competitive in cases where the items to be analysed are not transportable, or set up in a confined environment. This document reviews the relevant literature, presents some exemplary use cases, and critically assesses the strengths and weaknesses of muography in this context.

Exploring Advanced Detector Technologies for Muon Radiography Applications

Abstract:Muon radiography often referred to as muography, is an imaging technique that uses freely available cosmic-ray muons to study the interior structure of natural or man-made large-scale objects. The amount of multidisciplinary applications of this technique keeps increasing over time and a variety of basic detector types have already been used in the construction of muon telescopes. Here, we are investigating the use of advanced gaseous detectors for muography. As our basic solution, given its robustness and ease of operation in remote, outdoor environments, a scintillator-based muon telescope with silicon photomultiplier readout is being developed. To enhance the telescope performance, we are proposing the use of Multi-gap Resistive Plate Chambers (mRPCs) and Thick Gas Electron Multipliers (THGEMs). While the former offer superior time resolution which could be beneficial for detector background rejection, the latter detector type offers excellent spatial resolution, can be manufactured at low cost and operated with a simple gas mixture. Currently, prototype detector planes for each of these proposed types are being designed and constructed, and initial performance tests are in progress. In parallel, a Geant4- based muon telescope simulation is being developed, which will enable us to e.g. optimize our telescope geometry and study the use of superior time resolution for background rejection. The design and status of the three detector prototype planes and the muon telescope, along with the initial results of their performance tests and of the Geant4 simulation studies are reported.

Methodologies for imaging a used nuclear fuel dry storage cask with cosmic ray muon computed tomography

Abstract:Muons interact with matter via two major interaction mechanisms: ionization and radioactive process, and multiple Coulomb scattering leading to energy loss and trajectory deflection, respectively. For a monoenergetic muon beam crossing an object, the scattering angle follows a Gaussian distribution with a zero mean value and a variance that depends on the atomic number of the material object it traversed. Thus, the measured scattering angle may be used to reconstruct the geometrical and material information of the contents inside the dry storage cask. In traditional X-ray computed tomography, the projection information used to reconstruct the attenuation map of the imaged objects is the negative natural logarithm of the transmission rate of the X-rays, which is equal to the linear summation of the X-ray attenuation coefficients along the incident path. Similarly, the variance of the muon scattering angle is also the linear integral of the scattering density of the objects crossed by the muons. Thus, a muon CT image can be built by equating scattering density with attenuation coefficient. However, muon CT faces some unique challenges including: 1) long measurement times due to low cosmic muon flux, 2) insufficiently accurate muon path models, and 3) the inability to precisely measuring muon momentum. In this work, three different muon path models, two different projection methods, and two different reconstruction methods were investigated for use in muon CT of dry storage casks. The investigation was conducted in a validated Geant4 workspace, both in an ideal case and with relevant engineering restrictions considered. The results of these investigations and the expected benefits for fuel cask monitoring are reported herein.

Abstract:Cosmic ray muon radiography which has good penetration ability and is sensitive to high-Z materials, is an effective method to detect shielded nuclear materials. This paper summarizes methods developed to process muon radiography in Tsinghua University. The methods include detector data correction, reconstruction algorithms (maximum likelihood scattering, MLS, and the maximum likelihood scattering and displacement, MLSD) acceleration, and the modification of the normalized mean absolute distance measure (NMADM) into a picture comparison binarization method (PCBM) which is more suitable for cosmic ray muon radiographs. Simulations demonstrate that all these methods give excellent results, so that cosmic muon radiography can become more widely used.

Abstract:Cosmic-ray muon radiography is a novel method to detect high-Z materials in thick shield, and the reconstruction algorithm is the key point of this technique. In this paper, we have improved the traditional maximum likelihood algorithm, using EM method to get the estimation and OS technique to accelerate, and using the result from the Point of Closest Approach algorithm as the initial value. Having done the simulated numerical experiments in three dimensional space, we get some preliminary reconstruction results. This new method will be embedded into platform program and expanded into widely practical applications in muon tomography.

Abstract:Cosmic-ray muons which impinge upon the Earth's surface can be used to image the density of geological and man-made materials located above a muon detector. The detectors used for these measurements must be capable of determining the muon rate as a function of the angle of incidence. Applications of this capability include geological carbon storage, natural gas storage, enhanced oil recovery, compressed air storage, oil and gas production, tunnel detection, and detection of hidden rooms in man-made structures such as the pyramids. For these applications the detector must be small, rugged, and have operational characteristics which enable its use in remote locations, such as low power requirements. A new muon detector design is now being constructed to make measurements on the Khafre pyramid, in Egypt, to look for unknown voids that might exist in the structure. The new detector design uses monolithic plates of scintillator with wavelength shifting fiber optic readout to obtain location information. This design will meet the operational requirements, while also providing a geometry which can be modified for different measurement conditions.

This novel technique, dubbed "muography", has been used in applications ranging from geophysics to archaeology, but has remained largely unexplored for a wide range of cultural heritage objects that are small by muography standards but whose size and density are too large for conventional imaging methods. This document outlines the general arguments and some early simulation studies that aim at exploring the low-size limit of muography and its relevance for cultural heritage preservation.
