Abstract:PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) is successfully applied in Huzhou Central Hospital, and is well integrated with its HIS system by WEBSERVICE middleware. The system supports DICOM 3.0 Standard, and DICOM gateways are installed for modalities that do not support DICOM so as to have implemented the digitalization of all the image departments in the hospital.

Abstract:Describes the current status and future advances of two components in a large-scale digital healthcare delivery system: digital radiography (DR) and PACS, as well as their relationship with other healthcare information systems, hospital information systems (HIS), and electronic patient records (EPR). In DR, the authors review computed radiography and describe the current advances in DR technology. The measurements of spatial resolution, image contrast, and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of DR are given. In PACS, the authors emphasise DR and PACS integration and its utilization in several applications, including outpatient clinics, emergency rooms, imaging centers, and teleradiology. The importance of medical imaging informatics in the future practice of medicine based on integrated PACS is also outlined.

Abstract:The history of PACS is short in years but already long in achievements. The idea of a picture archiving and communication system (PACS) and a filmless hospital was created in the early 1980s. Abstract:The picture archiving and communication system (PACS) is an image information system that has become widely installed. For its successful implementation, training has been found indispensable. A review of PACS training thus far shows major emphasis was placed on the use of display workstations. As an integrated system, the PACS is much broader than the display workstations, having many components that need connectivity and customization. With the many potentials of further development, a more comprehensive education program on PACS is called for and a PACS simulator as a standalone training and research tool is deemed necessary.

Abstract:In recent times, technological advancements have remarkably improved picture archiving and communication system (PACS) capabilities beyond their conventional use in radiology departments. Researchers and instructors have started employing PACS functionalities to improve medical research processes, promote interdisciplinary collaborations, and facilitate learning. To illustrate this point further, the PACS enables researchers to handle and analyze huge amounts of imaging data with superior precision and speed, supporting innovative studies in areas like disease progression, treatment outcomes, and imaging modalities. Moreover, a PACS integrated with artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms leads to significant improvements in image processing, diagnostic accuracy, and personalized treatment, thus marking a new approach to medical imaging. The PACS supported by AI is mostly transformative since they allow for improved early disease detection capabilities as well as automated image processing and decision assistance, which increase diagnostic accuracy and clinical outcomes. Such systems can rapidly process large quantities of visual data with an accuracy rate surpassing earlier endeavors. In medical research, however, combining PACS with AI allows challenging imaging datasets to be examined, thereby making findings that were not previously possible. The capacity to combine imaging outcomes with clinical information is valuable for medical students and professionals in the field of education. They can access extensive medical image collections and case studies using PACS. This link is critical for teaching and learning as it allows students to interact with concrete events and improve their diagnostic accuracy in a controlled environment. This review discusses how the PACS affects educational courses and clinical outcomes based on the available literature. Our aim was not only to outline recent research or developments but also to present a comprehensive overview regarding the growing role played by PACS in the modern healthcare system and academics. Similarly, we look at the challenges and opportunities associated with the wide adoption of PACS, highlighting possible future areas of study or teaching methodologies. Issues such as data security, interoperability, and the need for defined protocols are included to give an exhaustive understanding of what PACS can and cannot do. Through this study, we stress PACS's revolutionary potential in advancing research methodology and educational practices, eventually contributing to enhanced patient care and knowledge dissemination in healthcare areas. The continual growth of PACS technology and its applications is expected to reshape the landscape of medical research and education, making it a vital component in the quest for medical excellence. By knowing the present trends and future potential, stakeholders in healthcare and education may better employ PACS to reach their objectives and boost overall results.

Abstract:The advent of affordable technology has significantly influenced the practice of digital pathology, leading to its growing adoption within the pathology community. This review article aimed to outline the latest developments in digital pathology, the cutting-edge advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) applications within this field, and the pertinent United States regulatory frameworks. The content is based on a thorough analysis of original research articles and official United States Federal guidelines. Findings from our review indicate that several Food and Drug Administration-approved digital scanners and image management systems are establishing a solid foundation for the seamless integration of advanced technologies into everyday pathology workflows, which may reduce device and operational costs in the future. AI is particularly transforming the way morphologic diagnoses are automated, notably in cancers like prostate and colorectal, within screening initiatives, albeit challenges such as data privacy issues and algorithmic biases remain. The regulatory environment, shaped by standards from the Food and Drug Administration, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services/Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments, and College of American Pathologists, is evolving to accommodate these innovations while ensuring safety and reliability. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services/Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments have issued policies to allow pathologists to review and render diagnoses using digital pathology remotely. Moreover, the introduction of new digital pathology Current Procedural Terminology codes designed to complement existing pathology Current Procedural Terminology codes is facilitating reimbursement processes. Overall, these advancements are heralding a new era in pathology that promises enhanced diagnostic precision and efficiency through digital and AI technologies, potentially improving patient care as well as bolstering educational and research activities.

Abstract:Conventional gold standard histopathologic diagnosis requires information of both high resolution structural and chemical changes in tissue. Providing optical information at ultrasonic resolution, photoacoustic (PA) technique could provide highly sensitive and highly accurate tissue characterization noninvasively in the authentic in vivo environment, offering a replacement for histopathology. A two-dimensional (2D) physio-chemical spectrogram (PCS) combining micrometer to centimeter morphology and chemical composition simultaneously can be generated for each biological sample with PA measurements at multiple optical wavelengths. This spectrogram presents a unique 2D "physio-chemical signature" for any specific type of tissue. Comprehensive analysis of PCS, termed PA physio-chemical analysis (PAPCA), can lead to very rich diagnostic information, including the contents of all relevant molecular and chemical components along with their corresponding histological microfeatures, comparable to those accessible by conventional histology. PAPCA could contribute to the diagnosis of many diseases involving diffusive patterns such as fatty liver.
Preliminary Research on Quality Control of PACS Image Display Device

Abstract:Objective To study the quality assurance(QA) and quality control(QC) of PACS image display device in the department of radiology equipped with PACS and radiology information system (RIS). Methods Routine maintenance and periodic calibration were performed using photometer and automatic calibration software according to American Association of Physicists in Medicine Task Group 18 (AAPM TG18) test patterns and evaluating criterion. Digital image and communication in medicine (DICOM) gray scale standard display function (GSDF) standard calibration ,maximum luminance and minimum luminance,luminance uniformity,display resolution and geometry distortion adjustment were performed quarterly on BARCO CRT displays. Results All the results were well conformed to the criteria recommended by the AAPM TG18. About 95 percents of radiological images were interpreted on the PACS diagnostic image display.Conclusion The QC program of PACS image display device is an essential to ensure high-quality in digital medical environment.

Abstract:Background: Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM®) is the standard for the representation, storage, and communication of medical images and related information. A DICOM file format and communication protocol for pathology have been defined; however, adoption by vendors and in the field is pending. Here, we implemented the essential aspects of the standard and assessed its capabilities and limitations in a multisite, multivendor healthcare network. Methods: We selected relevant DICOM attributes, developed a program that extracts pixel data and pixel-related metadata, integrated patient and specimen-related metadata, populated and encoded DICOM attributes, and stored DICOM files. We generated the files using image data from four vendor-specific image file formats and clinical metadata from two departments with different laboratory information systems. We validated the generated DICOM files using recognized DICOM validation tools and measured encoding, storage, and access efficiency for three image compression methods. Finally, we evaluated storing, querying, and retrieving data over the web using existing DICOM archive software. Results: Whole slide image data can be encoded together with relevant patient and specimen-related metadata as DICOM objects. These objects can be accessed efficiently from files or through RESTful web services using existing software implementations. Performance measurements show that the choice of image compression method has a major impact on data access efficiency. For lossy compression, JPEG achieves the fastest compression/decompression rates. For lossless compression, JPEG-LS significantly outperforms JPEG 2000 with respect to data encoding and decoding speed. Conclusion: Implementation of DICOM allows efficient access to image data as well as associated metadata. By leveraging a wealth of existing infrastructure solutions, the use of DICOM facilitates enterprise integration and data exchange for digital pathology.

Abstract:PACS is widely used in hospitals and is considered a mission critical system for around-the-clock daily clinical operation. Scheduled or unscheduled downtime of the main PACS archive storage or server could potentially cripple the entire PACS operation. This is especially the case in a filmless hospital environment. Therefore, in a downtime event, it is most desirable for users to have only a minimal performance impact without interruption of clinical data flow or loss of data and to have available historical PACS studies. This paper summarizes some of the developments in the design and implementation of a reliable PACS that insures maximum uptime for end users while preserving the integrity of the PACS data and making it available during downtime events. It also details strategy for developing proper clinical workflow contingency procedures when a scheduled downtime event to the main archive storage and server occurs. Specifically, the design and implementation of a fault-tolerant (FT) main archive server, the development of a FT back-up archive using an application service provider (ASP) model, and the clinical experiences while upgrading a main archive server and migrating the stored PACS data to new storage media will be discussed.

Abstract:Technology is changing how we practice medicine. Sensors and wearables are getting smaller and cheaper, and algorithms are becoming powerful enough to predict medical outcomes. Yet despite rapid advances, healthcare lags behind other industries in truly putting these technologies to use. A major barrier to entry is the cross-disciplinary approach required to create such tools, requiring knowledge from many people across many fields. We aim to drive the field forward by unpacking that barrier, providing a brief introduction to core concepts and terms that define digital medicine. Specifically, we contrast "clinical research" versus routine "clinical care," outlining the security, ethical, regulatory, and legal issues developers must consider as digital medicine products go to market. We classify types of digital measurements and how to use and validate these measures in different settings. To make this resource engaging and accessible, we have included illustrations and figures throughout that we hope readers will borrow from liberally. This primer is the first in a series that will accelerate the safe and effective advancement of the field of digital medicine.

Abstract:This paper is aimed to present a novel compartmental PACS model for the automatic object-oriented integration and visualization of heterogeneous data for the multidisciplinary biomedical studies in the midst of the imaging services in radiology department. The generic PACS is conceptually partitioned into two compartments: service and integration. The service compartment supports the routine imaging service by connecting the imaging modalities to the web client workstations through a single fault-tolerant hardware. The integration compartment is synthesized by open source and open standard software tools to perform the long-term archiving of imaging cases and to integrate the images with the related data from other clinical disciplines. The prototype of the compartmental PACS model has been successfully implemented in the Department of Health Technology and Informatics (HTI) at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). Multi-disciplinary study on a cardiovascular case is considered as an example in this paper to demonstrate the seamless integration and web-based visualization of heterogeneous data from radiology, ophthalmology, cardiology and hematology. The implementation of the compartmental PACS model demonstrates a deliberative system design for allocating mission-critical components at the clinical frontline of imaging services and long-term archiving components at the backend. The integrative feature of object-oriented long-term archive addresses the comprehensive needs of patient-centered multidisciplinary biomedical studies.
