Abstract:This study considered the Sujiachuan Loess Tunnel of the Baolan Railway in China. When excavating a shallow-buried large cross-sectional tunnel in loess, the unstable loess stratum may settle and produce large tunnel deformations. Therefore, field tests were carried out to investigate how tunnel deformation was related to the surrounding rock. The horizontal displacement of the tunnel face during the construction of the tunnel was also investigated. Spatio–temporal effects of the initial support closure on the deformation behavior of the tunnel were also analyzed. The ground settlement showed a typical V-shaped symmetrical distribution in the transverse direction. The influence of the tunnel extended 1.4D around the center line, which was consistent with Peck’s research results. The width coefficient and ground loss rate were about 0.6 and 1.8%, respectively. The layered settlement of the strata increased slightly with depth and the maximum increment was about 10%. The horizontal displacement was 9–12% of the vertical displacement and ground deformation was mainly dominated by the overall settlement. Vault settlement during the excavation of the upper bench accounted for about 80%, while that during excavation of the inverted arch accounted for only 8%. After the initial support was closed, the vault settlement accounted for about 5% of the total settlement. With increasing time and distance from closure of the initial support, the tunnel deformation gradually increased. If the time and distance from initial support closure were less than 10 days and 25 m, respectively, the influence of these parameters on tunnel deformation became very weak.
