Abstract:Massively parallel simulation of large-scale electromagnetic problems is performed on a supercomputer using an in-house developed high-performance computing scheme together with a domain decomposition method, where parallel adaptive unstructured mesh generation is at first performed for modeling an arbitrary multiscale structure. The accuracy, speedup, as well as scalability of such parallel scheme are numerically tested and validated during its implementation for simulating electromagnetic environmental effects (E3) on a ship platform using the TianHe-II supercomputer. It is demonstrated that this method can overcome the convergence deficiency of conventional iterative solver. In addition, numerical experiments are also carried out to show its adaptability to the number of subdomains and object electrical size. It is believed that our developed solver can be further used for solving various E3 or electromagnetic compatibility problems for the design of many large-scale platforms.

Abstract:Numerical modeling and simulation of many electromagnetic (EM) and multiphysics problems encounter challenges from geometrical and material complexities, large-scale issues, and multiscale issues. Examples include the simulation of complex microwave devices and systems, the design of integrated circuits and packages, the modeling of natural or artificial materials, the simulation of large-scale antenna arrays, the analysis of EM wave propagation in complex environments, and the optimization of geometrical and material parameters in inverse scattering problems. The past few decades have witnessed a fast and exciting development in computational EM methods and techniques that contributed to the successful resolution of some of the aforementioned challenges. Noticeable developments include the use of high-order basis functions, fast algorithms, domain decomposition methods, and parallel computing techniques based on CPUs and GPUs. As modern technologies evolve, the overall electrical size of the EM systems and the integration density of EM components keep increasing, leading to higher power density, stronger thermal effect, and more critical multiscale phenomena. All these pose new challenges to the current modeling and simulation methods in electromagnetics. This Special Issue includes 10 high-quality papers addressing some of these challenges.

Globalized Numerical Modeling of Electromagnetic Scattering from Conductive Targets with Open Cavity and Electrically Large Size

Abstract:In this paper, the electromagnetic scattering from conductive target with open cavity has been simplified as two (inner and outer) equivalent models by using the equivalence principle and introducing an equivalent magnetic current in the aperture of the cavity. For the inner part of the cavity, the equivalent conductance matrix has been obtained by use of connection scheme. Approximate boundary integral method has been used to describe the coupling between inner and outer parts of the cavity, and to obtain the aperture equivalent magnetic current. Finally, the general combined field integral equation was presented to form the electromagnetic model of the scattering problem, and the multilevel fast multipole algorithm was used to solve this problem efficiently. Numerical examples show good agreement between calculated results and measured data.

Abstract:A modified ICCG method for large sparse symmetric linear equations in finite element analysis of electromagnetic field problems is presented in the paper. A controlling parameter is used to reduce the amount of the non-zero elements in the process of the incomplete Cholesky decomposition, so as to reduce the computation time of the incomplete decomposition and each iterative step of the conjugate gradient method. Through theoretical analysis, the proper choice of the controlling parameter not only has no influence on the rate of convergence, but also accelerates the convergence sometimes. Numerical examples show that the method can reduce the computation time by 30 ％～50％ than the ICCG (or PCBCG) method.

Abstract:A novel unified Hamiltonian approach is proposed to solve Maxwell-Schrodinger equation for modeling the interaction between classical electromagnetic (EM) fields and particles. Based on the Hamiltonian of electromagnetics and quantum mechanics, a unified Maxwell-Schrodinger system is derived by the variational principle. The coupled system is well-posed and symplectic, which ensures energy conserving property during the time evolution. However, due to the disparity of wavelengths of EM waves and that of electron waves, a numerical implementation of the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method to the multiscale coupled system is extremely challenging. To overcome this difficulty, a reduced eigenmode expansion technique is first applied to represent the wave function of the particle. Then, a set of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) governing the time evolution of the slowly-varying expansion coefficients are derived to replace the original Schrodinger equation. Finally, Maxwell's equations represented by the vector potential with a Coulomb gauge, together with the ODEs, are solved self-consistently. For numerical examples, the interaction between EM fields and a particle is investigated for both the closed, open and inhomogeneous electromagnetic systems. The proposed approach not only captures the Rabi oscillation phenomenon in the closed cavity but also captures the effects of radiative decay and shift in the open free space. After comparing with the existing theoretical approximate models, it is found that the approximate models break down in certain cases where a rigorous self-consistent approach is needed. This work is helpful for the EM simulation of emerging nanodevices or next-generation quantum electrodynamic systems.

Most efforts were focused on electromagnetic-circuital co-simulation and electromagnetic-thermal co-simulation. A brief introduction of related theories like governing equations, numerical methods, and coupling mechanisms is also included.

Abstract:While machine learning is revolutionizing every corner of modern technologies, we have been attempting to explore whether machine learning methods could be used in computational electromagnetic (CEM). In this paper, five efforts in line with this direction are reviewed. They include forward methods such as the method of moments (MoM) solved by the artificial neural network training process, FDTD PML (perfectly matched layer) using the hyperbolic tangent basis function (HTBF), etc. There are also inverse problems that use the deep ConvNets for the effective source reconstruction and subwavelength imaging in the far-field. Benchmarks are provided to demonstrate the feasibility of all explorations. The reviewed works are attempting to open the new path for employing machine learning in the modern CEM.

Abstract:A marching-on-in-degree (MOD)-based time-domain domain decomposition method is proposed to efficiently analyze the transient electromagnetic scattering from electrically large multiscale targets. The algorithm starts with an octree that divides the whole scattering target into several subdomains. Then using the equivalence principle algorithm, each subdomain is enclosed by an equivalence sphere (ES), where both the RWG and BoR spatial basis functions are employed to expand the unknown currents. The interactions of the near-field subdomains are directly calculated by the method of moments, while the far-field interactions can be converted into the interactions of corresponding ESs. This scheme implicitly satisfies the current continuity condition, and the convergence can be accelerated as well. By harnessing the rotational symmetry of the ESs, the computational resources are reduced significantly compared with the traditional MOD method. Several numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed algorithm.
A Novel Pseudospectral Time Domain Method for Complex EM Simulations

Abstract:A novel pseudospectral time-domain algorithm, combined with the discontinuous Galerkin method, is presented to simulate electromagnetic wave propagation in large-scale complex media. Compared with the edge-/curl-conforming-based finite element method, arbitrary high-order basis function is easily achieved by utilizing the nodal basis functions; compared with the conventional pseudospectral time-domain algorithm, this new algorithm is strictly long-time stable (>300 central periods) for non-orthogonal elements, in terms of both mathematical analysis and numerical experiments. In addition, both h- and p-adaptivity are supported by using the nonconformal-mesh-based domain decomposition method. Numerical examples include 3D full-waveform modeling of 5G electromagnetic pulse propagation in a bedroom (hundreds of wavelengths in each direction) and fully anisotropic heterogenous head-electromagnetics interaction.

Abstract:An effective hybrid method, based on time domain adaptive integral method - marching on in degree scheme (TD-AEM-MOD), is presented for studying on transient scattering characteristics of large-scale perfectly conductive structures. 4-D FFT, including 3-D spatial FFT and blocked 1-D “temporal” (order) FFT, is used to accelerate the convolution during the MOD iteration. The technique of singular value decomposition (SVD) compression is also adopted to relief the memory requirement for the near field correction data. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate both accuracy and efficiency of the hybrid method for fast capturing transient electromagnetic responses of some typical PEC structures.
Parallel Data Partitioning Strategy In Solving Large Scale Electromagnetic Scattering Problems

Abstract:The multilevel fast multipole algorithm (MLFMA) has shown great efficiency in solving large scale electromagnetic scattering problems. However, when unknowns become up to tens of millions, it is not trivial to keep high performance because of the complicated structure and calculation of MLFMA. In order to get rid of the bottleneck caused by load balancing, a parallel data partitioning strategy is proposed based on the hierarchical structure of an oct-tree of MLFMA. We present our data partitioning strategy in the light of different layers' properties including the processing of three kinds of layers in the tree and a fine-grained decomposition. We also put forward a solution of a coexisting data correlating problem, using a transition layer. Meanwhile, with the purpose of minimizing communication time in distributed memory system, a redundant technique is applied in the distributed layer. Parallel efficiency analysis demonstrates that the computational cost in parallelization of MLFMA can be asymptotically cut, and a high parallel efficiency can be obtained in our implementation.
Efficient Calculation of Large Finite Periodic Structures Based on Surface Wave Analysis

Abstract:The electromagnetic modeling of practical finite periodic structures is a topic of growing interest. Due to the truncation of infinite periodic structures, surface waves will be excited and localized near discontinuous interfaces leading to the edge effect. In this work, surface waves are numerically extracted and their magnitudes and decay rates are analyzed for different materials and geometries. Based on the exponential decay of the surface wave, a novel method is developed by connecting the solution to the large finite array problem with that to a relatively small one to achieve low complexity and memory consumption. The method numerically reconstructs propagating Bloch waves and surface waves according to the Bloch-Floquet theorem of periodic structures and translation invariant properties of semi-infinite periodic structures, respectively. Numerical examples are shown for near-field distributions and far-field radiation patterns. The results obtained from small finite periodic structures capture the edge effect and agree well with the results by the rigorous element-by-element approach.

Abstract:The papers in this special issue focus on theory, measurements, and applications for electromagnetics in near-field. Numerous electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) problems occur in the near-field (NF) where far-field (FF) concepts, measurement techniques, and equipment may not provide correct insight and solutions. The ability to identify near-field effects when assessing EMC problems is important to both researchers and practitioners alike. Applications of advanced technologies, which are characterized by new materials and rapidly increasing frequencies, in different civil, industrial, and military areas highlight the importance of NF techniques. This issue examines recent research on NF theoretical approaches, computational models, and measurement techniques in light of EMC goals.

Abstract:Nowadays, electrically large complex electromagnetic problems exist in modern defence and communication industry. Accurate and efficient calculation for such electromagnetic radiation and scattering is a high computational complex task and a challenge to conventional electromagnetic solvers such as Method of Moment (MOM) where high memory and long computational time are required owing to its large size compared to operating wavelength. This paper presents the fast solution method with wavelet transform in the computation of scattering from large scale complex objects. Because of the vanishing moments, the moment matrices arising in these problems are sparsified by wavelet, and consequently, the induced current and equivalent magnetic current can be obtained quickly. Moreover, a precondition method is postulated and implemented in the fast solution of the transformed moment matrix equation with iteration methods.

Abstract:Since the Maxwell equations were proposed in the 19th century, computational electromagnetics has experienced a hundred years of steady development, and has developed finite difference method, finite element method, method of moments and other numerical algorithms and high-frequency approximate methods, becoming a vital cornerstone of modern electron and information engineering. In recent years, artificial intelligence technology has experienced vigorous development, and at the same time, due to its strong modeling and inferential capability ability, it has emerged in the electromagnetic field, giving birth to the emerging of intelligent electromagnetic computing, which has attracted many outstanding scientific researchers. Many excellent achievements have sprung out in the fields of electromagnetic modeling and simulation, analysis and synthesis of new electromagnetic materials and devices, detection and perception and so on, which have injected fresh blood into the electromagnetics. This paper discusses some recent advances in intelligent electromagnetic computing to help readers get started and grasp the latest information and results in this field.

Abstract:The international conference on computation of electromagnetic fields, COMPUMAG, is one of the most important worldwide serial conferences in the area of computational electromagnetics. A survey of the 18th COMPUMAG conference held in Sydney from July 12 to 15, 2011, is given in this paper, in which the research subjects, the numbers of papers by the authors from different countries and regions are included. According to the situation of the academic exchange in the conference, the focuses and new trend in current researches of this area were analyzed, especially for the computation of industry problems and the computation in large scale. According to the information of scores, acceptance and comments for the two-page papers in the review process, a set of statistics was made. Based on the statistic data, the quantities and qualities of the papers by Chinese authors are analyzed. Besides, on the basis of the statistical data, the authors of this paper present their opinions on some inadequacies about the quality of the conference papers submitted by Chinese authors, and indicate the task that should be undertaken from now on.

Abstract:In this paper, we will discuss two methods to tackle the low-frequency, multi-scale electromagnetics problem. First we will discuss the augmented electric field integral equation (AEFIE), and then, we will discuss the equivalence principle algorithm (EPA). The AEFIE allows the solution of such problems without the need to perform a loop search of a complex structure. The EPA allows the separation of circuit physics from wave physics in a multiscale problem. Hybridization of these two methods will be discussed.

Abstract:The Multilevel Fast Multipole Method (FMM) is a well-established method and can be applied to solve electromagnetic (EM) scattering problems. Compared with other traditional methods, it requires less computational time and memory. However, constrained by a single processor's speed and memory limitations, the problem size that can be solved by serial implementation is still relatively small. For a million-unknown target, the computational time on a single processor is intolerable, and memory could be easily exhausted. Parallel-computing technology, which can utilize multiprocessors, provides an efficient way to solve electrically large-scale EM problems. This paper will focus on discussing the parallel methodologies applied to a multilevel FMM code, as well as demonstrating the computational efficiency of the parallel approach.
Electromagnetic calculations for multiscale and multiphysics simulations: a new perspective

Abstract:Present day electromagnetic field calculations have limitations that are due to techniques employing edge-based discretization methods. While these vector finite element methods solve the issues of tangential continuity of fields and the removal of spurious solutions, resulting fields do not have a unique directionality at nodes in the discretization mesh. This review presents electromagnetic field calculations in waveguides, cavity fields, and photonic crystals. We develop Hermite interpolation polynomials and node-based finite element methods based on variational principles. We show that the Hermite-finite element method (HFEM) delivers high accuracy and suitable for multiscale calculations with mixed physics. We use group representation theory to derive the HFEM polynomial basis set in two-dimensions. The energy level degeneracy in a cubic cavity can be denumerably large even though the symmetry of the cube. We show that the additional operators available for the problem lead to accidental degeneracy. We discuss this remarkable degeneracy and its reduction in detail. We consider photonic crystals corresponding to a 2D checkerboard superlattice structure, and the Escher drawing of the Horsemen which satisfies the nonsymmorphic group pg. We show that HFEM is able to deliver high accuracy in such spatially complex examples with far less computational effort than Fourier expansion methods. The algorithms developed here hold the promise of successful modeling of multi-physics systems. This general method is applicable to a broad class of physical systems, to semiconducting lasers which require simultaneous modeling of transitions in quantum wells or dots together with EM cavity calculations, to modeling plasmonic structures in the presence of EM field emissions, and to on-chip propagation within monolithic integrated circuits.
