Abstract:This book aims to provide readers with up-to-date knowledge on how to make these technologies smarter. Humanity is now going through difficult times to fight the Covid-19 pandemic. Simultaneously, in these difficult times of physical separation, we can also realize how much digital society technology helps us cope with many difficulties that bring us this time. The authors focus on selected research challenges for intelligent digital society and state-of-the-art methods of how to face them. The book’s subtitle suggests that a core concept that the reader can study from various points of view in particular book chapters is the knowledge. The knowledge that can help us intelligently face different digital society challenges (Part I of this book); the knowledge extracted from available big data employing intelligent analysis techniques (Part II). For efficient processing and analysis of data, there is a strong need for smart data and information modeling techniques (Part III).

Abstract:Abstract In the last years, scholarly attention was on a steady rise leading to a significant increase in the number of papers addressing different technological and organizational aspects of digital transformation. In this paper, we consolidate existing findings which mainly stem from the literature of information systems, map the territory by sharing important macro- and micro-level observations, and propose future research opportunities for this pervasive field. The paper systematically reviews 58 peer-reviewed studies published between 2001 and 2019, dealing with different aspects of digital transformation. Emerging from our review, we develop inductive thematic maps which identify technology and actor as the two aggregate dimensions of digital transformation. For each dimension, we derive further units of analysis (nine core themes in total) which help to disentangle the particularities of digital transformation processes and thereby emphasize the most influential and unique antecedents and consequences. In a second step, in order to assist in breaking down disciplinary silos and strengthen the management perspective, we supplement the resulting state-of-the-art of digital transformation by integrating cross-disciplinary contributions from reviewing 28 papers on technological disruption and 32 papers on corporate entrepreneurship. The review reveals that certain aspects, such as the pace of transformation, the culture and work environment, or the middle management perspective are significantly underdeveloped.

Abstract:Technology and society are deeply interconnected, as technology emerges from the existent cultural framework and consequently shapes society on the micro level of human interaction and the larger scale of social structure and system. This paper tackles the digital transformation present in Industry 4.0 and Society 5.0. We analyse disruptive digital technologies by focusing on the social or cultural context of their creation, their core philosophy, and the impact they seem to have or how society may be shaped by their extended implementation and adoption. As technology is basically not neutral in its purpose, serving different personal and organizational interests, we use a multiple point-of-view approach to our study in order to elaborate an encompassing representation of the phenomenon.

Abstract:This new collection of essays follows in the footsteps of the successful volume Thinking Ahead - Essays on Big Data, Digital Revolution, and Participatory Market Society, published at a time when our societies were on a path to technological totalitarianism, as exemplified by mass surveillance reported by Edward Snowden and others. Meanwhile the threats have diversified and tech companies have gathered enough data to create detailed profiles about almost everyone living in the modern world - profiles that can predict our behavior better than our friends, families, or even partners. This is not only used to manipulate peoples’ opinions and voting behaviors, but more generally to influence consumer behavior at all levels. It is becoming increasingly clear that we are rapidly heading towards a cybernetic society, in which algorithms and social bots aim to control both the societal dynamics and individual behaviors. <span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: However there are also silver linings: most of the threats that have accumulated over the past years have been identified and regulations are on the way to being introduced. Abstract:The increasing digitalization of economies has highlighted the importance of digital transformation and how it can help businesses stay competitive in the market. However, disruptive changes not only occur at the company level; they also have environmental, societal, and institutional implications. This is the reason why during the past two decades the research on digital transformation has received growing attention, with a wide range of topics investigated in the literature. The following aims to provide insight regarding the current state of the literature on digital transformation (DT) by conducting a systematic literature review. An analysis of co-occurrence using the software VOSviewer was conducted to graphically visualize the literature’s node network. Approached this way, the systematic literature review displays major research avenues of digital transformation that consider technology as the main driver of these changes. This paper qualitatively classifies the literature on digital business transformation into three different clusters based on technological, business, and societal impacts. Several research gaps identified in the literature on DT are proposed as futures lines of research which could provide useful insights to the government and private sectors in order to adapt to the disruptive changes found in business as a result of this phenomenon, as well as to reduce its negative impacts on society and the environment.

Abstract:Digital Transformation (DT) has occurred in various sectors, even in the context of villages. This study conducts a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) to identify characteristics, stages, and impacts of DT on Smart Villages (SV). Relevant articles are selected following a search in four databases, applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, and assessing the relevancy of the articles. DT progress through stages of technology adoption and strategic change that impact activities. The characteristic of DT in SV is the ease of access, digital literacy, online services, innovation, relevant infrastructure, availability of information, data management, appropriate tools in a platform, and mature use of relevant modern technology. The stages of DT discuss the preparation, implementation, and monitoring stages of concepts and digital platforms. The impact of DT is oriented toward the benefits received through activities and performance in the Village.

Abstract:This paper aims to examine a theoretical framework of digital society and the ramifications of the digital revolution. The paper proposes that more attention has to be paid to cultural studies as a means for the understanding of digital society. The approach is based on the idea that the digital revolution’s essence is fully manifested in the cultural changes that take place in society. Cultural changes are discussed in connection with the digital society’s transformations, such as blurring the distinction between reality and virtuality and among people, nature, and artifacts, and the reversal from informational scarcity to abundance. The presented study develops a general model of culture. This model describes the spiritual, social, and technological facets of culture. Such new phenomena as individualization, transparisation, and so-called cognification (intellectualization of the surrounding environment) are suggested as the prominent trends characterizing the above cultural facets.

How do digital threats change requirements for the software industry?

Abstract:Digital systems are, by definition, the core of digital transformation. This has led many to think that the system being considered in digital transformation is solely software. I argue that this approach is a fatal mistake, and it has induced a great number of already realized problems and even a greater number of concerns about the future. These problems and concerns have become evident along with rising requirements for sustainability and responsibility. In this paper, I call for a better understanding of the digital society in its entirety. By digital society I mean the societal system that is affected by the digital systems and the ongoing societal trans-formations. When shifting the focus to the effects of digital systems on societies, we are forced to consider all the anticipated outcomes, both desirable and undesirable ones. Unfortunately, the mainstream research has ignored, to a large extent, the potential threats, and unwanted outcomes, of digitalization, which makes the efforts to change software businesses to be more sustainable, difficult to succeed. In my paper, I will provide an overall picture of current and future challenges of digital societies and discuss what these challenges mean to the software industry in future. The easiest way to start with, is to learn from earlier experiences, especially from the unsuccessful stories.

Abstract:<p>In this article we provide a systematic review of the extensive yet diverse and fragmented literature on digital transformation (DT), with the goal of clarifying boundary conditions to investigate the phenomenon from the perspective of organizational change. On the basis of 279 articles, we provide a multi‐dimensional framework synthesizing what is known about DT and discern two important thematical patterns: DT is moving firms to malleable organizational designs that enable continuous adaptation, and this move is embedded in and driven by digital business ecosystems. From these two patterns, we derive four perspectives on the phenomenon of DT: technology impact, compartmentalized adaptation, systemic shift and holistic co‐evolution. Linking our findings and interpretations to existing work, we find that the nature of DT is only partially covered by conventional frameworks on organizational change. On the basis of this analysis, we derive a research agenda and provide managerial implications for strategy and organizational change.</p>

Abstract:Digital transformation, a term introduced to talk about the various changes in business and society due to the increased usage of digital technologies, has recently gained much attention both in research and in practice. However, an analysis of 41 digital transformation frameworks following a developmental literature review shows that several areas can be expanded upon. We propose a novel framework that deals with the underrepresented areas by consolidating the various concepts found in the literature, explicitly including the role of society, highlighting the evolution over time, and including the drivers of digital transformation that we classified into 23 'digital transformation interactions' across six categories. This novel perspective contributes to our macro-understanding of digital transformation and can be used as a lens for further research to generate fresh insights into unanswered research avenues. Ultimately, this paper can be the first step towards a unified understanding of digital transformation.

Abstract:The ongoing and ubiquitous digital transformation challenges the raison d'être of firms and forces managers to rethink business strategies and operations and academics to reconsider related theories. To aid these efforts, we conduct a systematic review of research on firms' digital transformation, generating a database of 537 peer-reviewed academic articles and analyzing it using a novel multi-layered framework. The framework separates three layers: an organization's core activities, its peripheral activities, and its external environment. We find that firms that have come far in their transformations are more embedded in platform ecosystems with unclear business boundaries. Relatedly, we identify a tension between decentralizing versus centralizing power across organizational layers during a firm's digital transformation and how this dynamic affects corporate strategies and firms' internal and external boundaries.

Abstract:The digital transformation of enterprises has become an inevitable trend. Conducting a bibliometric analysis of the literature on the digital transformation of enterprises and exploring the current status of digital transformation will provide valuable references and suggestions for enterprises. Both bibliometric analysis and literature review methods are utilized in this study. Among the bibliometric analysis tools are HistCite and CiteSpace. This study finds that Parida V and Technology Forecasting and Social Change are the most prolific authors and journals on enterprise digital transformation, respectively. The USA has the most publications, and Copenhagen Business School is the most influential institution. Three stages are shown by the citation mapping: the budding stage (before 2014), the system formation stage (2015–2019), and the diversified development stage (2020–present). Based on keyword co-occurrence analysis and emergent keyword analysis, this study constructs a conceptual framework for enterprise digital transformation in four aspects: digital technology adoption, digital dynamic capabilities, digital innovation orientation, and digital transformation performance. This study provides a systematic overview of enterprise digital transformation research, establishes a conceptual framework for enterprise digital transformation, and provides certain theoretical insights to steer corresponding practical activities.

Abstract:Digital technology, including its omnipresent connectedness and its powerful artificial intelligence, is the most recent long wave of humanity's socioeconomic evolution. The first technological revolutions go all the way back to the Stone, Bronze, and Iron Ages, when the transformation of material was the driving force in the Schumpeterian process of creative destruction. A second metaparadigm of societal modernization was dedicated to the transformation of energy (aka the "industrial revolutions"), including water, steam, electric, and combustion power. The current metaparadigm focuses on the transformation of information. Less than 1% of the world's technologically stored information was in digital format in the late 1980s, surpassing more than 99% by 2012. Every 2.5 to 3 years, humanity is able to store more information than since the beginning of civilization. The current age focuses on algorithms that automate the conversion of data into actionable knowledge. This article reviews the underlying theoretical framework and some accompanying data from the perspective of innovation theory..
