Abstract:Digitalization has permeated all aspects of human lives, economies, and societies. This transformation has been driven by the rapid growth in computing power, storage capabilities, and data transmission infrastructures. These changes have enabled innovations, such as cloud computing, artificial intelligence, smartphones, digitalized homes, (semi) autonomous vehicles, quantum computing, and more. Digitalization has further resulted in faster, more effective service delivery by many organizations. The phenomenon of digitalization relies on an increasingly finite supply of resources, such as crude oil, silicon, and energy. Over the past 150 years, humans have consumed as many natural resources as they have consumed in the past 20,000 years. In part, this increasing clip of consumption has been driven by digitalization, as novel, technology-based solutions, such as blockchain, supplant older, slower low-tech solutions, such as books and ledgers, to process data and create value. Digitalization's demand for resources may be leading us to an environmental abyss. Consider cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, whose electricity consumption is approximately equal to the energy needs of small nations such as Malaysia or Sweden. Such consumption evokes the question, is, "is more digitalization really better, or given the harm to the planet, is this one context where less is more?". In this paper, we develop a research agenda for understanding the full cost of digitalization and its impact on sustainability. We do so in three parts; first, we offer a crisp definition of sustainability; second, we offer a concise review of the digitalization and sustainability literature; and third, we offer suggestions for research that advances our understanding of how digitalization impacts sustainability.

Abstract:Advancements in digital technologies have a bootstrapping effect. The past fifty years of technological innovations from the computer architecture community have brought innovations and orders-of-magnitude efficiency improvements that engender use cases that were not previously possible -- stimulating novel application domains and increasing uses and deployments at an ever-faster pace. Consequently, computing technologies have fueled significant economic growth, creating education opportunities, enabling access to a wider and more diverse spectrum of information, and, at the same time, connecting people of differing needs in the world together. Technology must be offered that is inclusive of the world's physical, cultural, and economic diversity, and which is manufactured, used, and recycled with environmental sustainability at the forefront. For the next decades to come, we envision significant cross-disciplinary efforts to build a circular development cycle by placing pervasive connectivity, sustainability, and demographic inclusion at the design forefront in order to sustain and expand the benefits of a technologically rich society. We hope this work will inspire our computing community to take broader and more holistic approaches when developing technological solutions to serve people from different parts of the world.

Abstract:This article aims at addressing the future challenges in Sustainability and Information Technology (IT) by reversing the order of the conventional prioritization of social objectives and technology, and placing the aim first and the means second. In engineering and technology, historically, there has been greater focus on first developing the technologies (means) and then determining their potential (aim), and how to tame their unintended consequences. The greatest challenge confronting humanity in the coming decades is sustainability. Therefore, the question is how can IT design, develop, and assist in maintaining the ambitious, albeit difficult to grasp, sustainability agenda? This discussion is pertinent in order to avoid research programs and academic curriculum which dive into the intricacies of IT without viewing sustainability as a core value, which ultimately risks replicating the historical pattern that will generate even more unsustainability.

Abstract:This study aims to analyze the interconnection between the concepts of digital economy and sustainability. These concepts have become popular due to awareness of climate change and the increased development and adoption of technologies. Researchers, business leaders and policymakers are exploring the many ways digital technologies can be used to address sustainability issues. Using a systematic literature review with a bibliometric analysis, we examined a sample of 92 studies indexed in SCOPUS to identify research activity on this topic up until April 2023. We found that 2022 had the highest number of peer-reviewed articles, with 31 publications. During the research, we identified multiple opportunities for this interconnection, such as developing renewable energies and sustainable technological solutions, smart cities and sustainable urbanization, and sustainable consumption. These opportunities enabled by digital technologies allow companies to adopt sustainable business strategies and develop sustainable products. Despite these opportunities, the digital economy presents several challenges that can hinder efforts to achieve sustainability goals, such as increasing e-waste, high energy consumption and rising carbon emissions, the digital divide, job insecurity, growing monopolies, and data protection. These issues must be addressed to enable the optimal use of the opportunities presented in the digital economy to promote sustainability.

Abstract:<p>Digitalization provides access to an integrated network of unexploited big data with potential benefits for society and the environment. The development of smart systems connected to the internet of things can generate unique opportunities to strategically address challenges associated with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to ensure an equitable, environmentally sustainable, and healthy society. This perspective describes the opportunities that digitalization can provide towards building the sustainable society of the future. Smart technologies are envisioned as game-changing tools, whereby their integration will benefit the three essential elements of the food-water-energy nexus: (i) sustainable food production; (ii) access to clean and safe potable water; and (iii) green energy generation and usage. It then discusses the benefits of digitalization to catalyze the transition towards sustainable manufacturing practices and enhance citizens' health wellbeing by providing digital access to care, particularly for the underserved communities. Abstract:The rapid advancements in digital technologies have prompted organizations to embrace digital transformations (DTs) in order to enhance efficiency, gain a competitive advantage, and achieve long-term sustainability objectives. However, the successful adoption of innovative digital technologies necessitates the careful consideration of various factors, such as stakeholder engagement, resource allocation, risk mitigation, and the availability of resources and implementation support. This study examines the sustainable adoption of innovative digital technologies (DTs) within digital transformations. The data for this study were collected from 760 stakeholders through a questionnaire survey and analyzed using SPSS software (Version 27). This study's results underscore the significance of considering the efficiency of the transformation process and the long-term sustainability outcomes for organizations. The findings of the analysis clarify that integrating sustainability principles and DT has a positive impact on the effectiveness of the transformation, as indicated by environmental, social, and economic performance indicators. This study's novelty lies in its focus on incorporating sustainability principles into the digital transformation process. The results of this study demonstrate that organizations' long-term sustainability outcomes are enhanced when their digital transformation goals align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The purpose of this study emphasizes the importance of arranging digital transformations with sustainable objectives to ensure the overall success and longevity of transformation efforts.

Abstract:The advent of digital technologies such as social media, mobile, analytics, cloud computing, and the Internet of things has provided unique opportunities for organizations to engage in affordable, easy-to-use, easy-to-learn, and easy-to-implement innovations. Transformations through such technologies often have positive impacts on business processes, products, and services. As such, organizations have managed to increase productivity and efficiency, reduce cycle time, and make substantial gains through digital transformation. Research has also found such transformations to be positively associated with reducing harmful environmental impacts by providing organizations alternative ways to conduct their business activities. However, in recent times when organizations can use many technologies at near-zero cost, questions regarding the potential negative impacts that digital transformation has on the environment have arisen. The contemporary ubiquitous technologies that pervade everyday life necessitate that organizations continue to create large data centers that increase in capacity daily; however, such growth also increases their impact on the environment. Considering this dialectical contradiction, in 2019, we conducted a panel at the Australasian Conference on Information Systems (ACIS) in Perth, Australia, to invigorate the dialogue regarding the impact that digital transformation has on environmental sustainability and investigate some directions for future research in this area.

Abstract:Digitalization has been increasingly recognized for its role in addressing numerous societal and environmental challenges. However, the rapid surge in data production and the widespread adoption of cloud computing has resulted in an explosion of redundant, obsolete, and trivial (ROT) data within organizations' data estates. This issue adversely affects energy consumption and carbon footprint, leading to inefficiencies and a higher environmental impact. Thus, this opinion paper aims to discuss the challenges and potential solutions related to the environmental impact of file storage on the cloud, aiming to address the research gap in "digital sustainability" and the Green IT literature. The key findings reveal that technological issues dominate cloud computing and sustainability research. Key challenges in achieving sustainable practices include the widespread lack of awareness about the environmental impacts of digital activities, the complexity of implementing accurate carbon accounting systems compliant with existing regulatory frameworks, and the role of public–private partnerships in developing novel solutions in emerging areas such as 6G technology.

Abstract:Sustainability and digitization have become significant parts of the global economy in recent years. Numerous studies examine the relationship between sustainability's environmental concerns and digitization. In contrast, few studies address the topic of organizational, environmental, and socioeconomic sustainability's integration with digital technologies. This paper intends to fill this void by conducting a bibliometric analysis of the relevant literature. Along with descriptive insights, we explain the area's social, intellectual, and conceptual structures, its evolution, and its future agenda. The article discusses how technology adaption improves individuals' and companies' efficacy, performance, and profitability. Second, the article suggests more funding to produce environmentally friendly, greener technologies that can promote inclusive economic models and spur sustainable growth. Third, the article explores explore technology's social and ethical implications, highlighting the need to consider gender, race, ethnicity, and location when digitizing the world. By drawing on extant evidence and integrating findings, the research concludes by providing a fresh academic and policy contribution to the twin fields of digitalization and sustainability.

Abstract:As business conditions change rapidly, the need for integrating business and technical systems calls for novel ICT frameworks and solutions to remain concurrent in highly competitive markets. A number of problems and issues arise in this regard. In this paper, four big challenges of enterprise information systems (EIS) are defined and discussed: (1) data value chain management; (2) context awareness; (3) usability, interaction and visualization; and (4) human learning and continuous education. Major contributions and research orientations of ICT technologies are elaborated based on selected key issues and lessons learned. First, the semantic mediator is proposed as a key enabler for dealing with semantic interoperability. Second, the context-aware infrastructures are proposed as a main solution for making efficient use of EIS to offer a high level of customization of delivered services and data. Third, the product avatar is proposed as a contribution to an evolutionary social, collaborative and product-centric and interaction metaphor with EIS. Fourth, human learning solutions are considered to develop individual competences in order to cope with new technological advances. The paper ends with a discussion on the impact of the proposed solutions on the economic and social landscape and proposes a set of recommendations as a perspective towards next generation of information systems.

Abstract:This review provides a comprehensive analysis of the intersection between digital sustainability (DS) and eco‐environmental sustainability (EES), focusing on the opportunities and challenges presented by emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, electric vehicles (EVs), and cryptocurrencies. The study critically examines the sustainability concerns arising from the increasing demand for digital infrastructure and the depletion of essential natural resources, including tantalum, indium, cobalt, and lithium. Through an interdisciplinary approach, the review evaluates the ethical, technological, and policy implications of integrating DS within the EES framework. It emphasizes the significance of innovative governance and cross‐sector collaboration to address the environmental trade‐offs and digital rebound effects linked with these technologies. Additionally, the review proposes strategies for mitigating the ecological impacts of digital transformation and identifies crucial research gaps, particularly in resource management and long‐term sustainability. The findings aim to guide the alignment of DS with EES, fostering a more balanced and resilient path towards sustainable development. A Sustainable Digital Ecosystem: Digital Servitization Transformation and Digital Infrastructure Support

Abstract:While the notion of digitalization and sustainability has become prominent in current research, more can be done to bridge these two concepts and explain the interaction between them. Plenty of literature has focused on the impact of digital technology applications and business model innovations on environmental performance but has not considered the counterforce of environmental performance on digitalization. We investigated this question from the perspective of digital ecosystem architects to explore more organic relationships. By analyzing data from 1083 listed firms from 2014 to 2019, we found various effective paths for architects to participate in the digital ecosystem and determined that improved environmental performance has led to more efficient convergence. Digital servitization adopted by private architects contributes to financial performance, whereas the addition of digital infrastructure enables public architects to play a greater role. This is reflected in the discovery that firms with “high” environmental performance can improve their financial performance far more significantly with the help of digital servitization compared to other firms. However, digital infrastructure development can benefit all firms almost indiscriminately. We encourage firms and governments to work together to strengthen digital infrastructure, build digital ecosystems, and focus on environmental performance while transitioning to digital servitization.

Abstract:Digitalization gives people access to a vast network of untapped data, which has the potential to help society and the environment. Smart systems connected to the internet can systematically provide a unique opportunity to solve difficulties related to long-term sustainability. The goals are to create an egalitarian, ecologically sustainable, and healthy society. Technological resources are envisioned as game-changing instruments. Three key concerns integration benefits are highlighted here: (i) sustainable development goals, (ii) socio-economic development, and (iii) the role of digital technology in environmental sustainability. This viewpoint describes the potential that digitization can create a future sustainable society. The technological network would unite the urban and rural worlds under a shared banner of sustainable development, keeping all social elements in the loop. Nations that take a comprehensive strategy will be able to provide equitable growth and an efficient, sustainable, and digital existence for their citizens. As a result, digitization provides better living conditions, active public involvement, clean governance, and transparency in public welfare programs and processes. People who are well-informed, self-aware, and digitally equipped will be better learners, thinkers, reformers, participators, and change and growth agents, marching forward on sustainable progress. The advantages of digitization in hastening the transition to sustainable industrial processes and improving people's health and happiness are explored. Finally, the perspective encapsulates the advantages of digitization by offering a holistic vision of how technology could aid in addressing major challenges such as endangered world biodiversity and climate change.

Abstract:Recent events, in particular the COVID-19 pandemic, have demonstrated the need for digital tools allowing people to meet, interact, and collaborate. Software-enabled systems must facilitate not only collaborative work, but also humanitarian needs like healthcare, online learning from kindergarten to postgraduate levels, and social networking. Such systems must be developed considering personal needs, the diversity of the population, their privacy needs, and physical safety. Moreover, this new generation of software-enabled systems must provide us a more sustainable world, from smart homes to industries and cities. All these challenges highlight critical considerations on what software-enabled systems to develop in the coming years, and especially on how to design these systems to offer a more Sustainable Digital Society. The software engineering community is facing these challenges when developing solutions, in contemporary areas such as Cyber Physical Systems, Internet of Things, and Cloud/Edge-computing. Evidence shows that one of the most critical success factors for the design and development of these systems has been raising the level of abstraction by focusing on their software architecture. The architecture of a software system describes its static and dynamic structures in terms of its software components, their inter-connection and properties as well as the rationale explaining its design and evolution. A prescriptive architecture can be an artifact devised by an architect to make a decision about what design to choose among alternatives, as well as an artifact dynamically composed by a running system that uses it to make decisions about selecting alternative configurations to deal with runtime change. This special issue aims at establishing a step forward to architecting the software systems demanded by a Sustainable Digital Society. Abstract:Digital transformation is steadily changing states and organizations, and making them more cutthroat, as well as it offers a few valuable open doors for monetary development and success, as it empowers nations to including, more expanded instructive open doors, widespread admittance to the web and an exhaustive and supportive climate to the improvement interaction. The Communication and Information Technology industry's role in achieving sustainable development is highlighted in this paper, which focuses on the concept of sustainable development. hence, this paper audits the 17 SDGs (supportable advancement objectives) and makes sense of what data innovation has mean for every objective. In addition, we track progress toward the SDGs, existing e-governance initiatives, and big data initiatives in four distinct nations in the world. While in the next part, we significantly review the digital transformation in Egypt and its contribution in achieving sustainable development in Egypt.
