Abstract:The present study aims to reveal behaviors of leaded brass as it is exposed to the synergetic effect of corrosion and cavitation erosion. The specimens were submerged in seawater for ultrasonic cavitation erosion experiments. The cumulative mass loss, surface microstructure and three-dimensional surface morphology were analyzed to characterize the time-dependent damage of the specimens. For comparison, cavitation erosion in deionized water was investigated. The results show that the mass loss of leaded brass in seawater is much lower than that in deionized water, and the trend is distinct after 45 min of cavitation erosion. Four characteristic stages of ultrasonic cavitation erosion are evidenced in seawater. In deionized water, only the acceleration stage is recognizable. The effect of cavitation erosion proves to be more significant than that of corrosion for the surface damage. In seawater, cavitation erosion is delayed by the protective passivation film with the main constituent of Cu2O, which is generated and disintegrated repeatedly. The corresponding surface roughness is low. In deionized water, the specimen surface is rapidly damaged under the exclusive effect of cavitation erosion.
