Abstract:We propose mode couplers and converters based on dual-core hollow-core photonic bandgap fiber (HC-PBGF) structures, which might be potential solutions for integrated all-fiber multiplexers or demultiplexers of a mode-division multiplexed (MDM) transmission system using HC-PBGFs. Coupling properties of LP01 and LP11 mode in the mode coupler are investigated and applied to mode separators and polarization separators. Mode transition from LP01 to LP11 and LP21 mode are demonstrated in the mode converter whose smaller core is expected as input end and matched with single-mode fiber. The coupling between fundamental mode and high-order modes is accomplished through the resonant effect, which is fulfilled by modifying the structure parameter of the smaller core. Such mode converters based on dual-core HC-PBGF could be a promising substitute for the free-space coupling device, which is costly and not suitable for integration design in MDM systems and other hollow-core fiber experiments and applications.

Abstract:In this paper, we report an all-fiber 4-mode fiber multiplexer and its measurement, which uses a fused tapering method to fabricate different mode-selective coupler. The insertion loss of a single mode-selective is less than 0.7dB, the insertion loss of LP 01 , LP 11 , LP 21 and LP 02 is less than 3 dB after cascading, while the modal crosstalk is lower than −15dB. This device can be applied in mode-division multiplexing transmission systems.

Abstract:An on-chip three-mode division multiplexing circuit using a simple ADC-based TE 0 & TE 1 & TE 2 (de)multiplexer is demonstrated to improve the link capacity of on-chip optical interconnects. The proposed (de)multiplexer does not contain any tapered waveguide which is different from the previous mode (de)multiplexer based on ADCs. Here, we choose multimode waveguide width first and then confirm corresponding width of the other two waveguides. Thus the bus waveguide without any tapers can not only reduce complexity of (de)multiplexer but also reduce difficulty of the fabrication. Our simulation results show that the hybrid multiplexer has relatively low loss and low crosstalk about −40 dB, −26.99 dB and −28.72 dB for each mode around 1550 nm with a width-variation w =±25 nm. These properties make the proposed mode-(de)multiplexer suitable for application in high-capacity data transmission.

Abstract:Fan-in/fan-out (FI/FO) device with low crosstalk is essential for weakly coupled short-reach optical interconnect based on multicore fibers (MCF), for which the laser-direct-writing (LDW) technique is one of the preferred fabrication schemes. In this paper, the influence of FI/FO crosstalk on short-reach intensity-modulation/direction-detection MCF optical interconnection is firstly evaluated, and the crosstalk related to different refractive-index profiles of waveguides and misalignment is analyzed for LDW-FI/FO devices. Then low-crosstalk compact LDW-FI/FO devices matching 8-core MCF are fabricated, adopting multiple-scan method for waveguides with a flat-top refractive-index profile and aberration correction method for precise alignment. Owing to the low crosstalk, 8×100-Gbps optical interconnection over 10-km MCF is experimentally demonstrated with only 0.5-dB penalty compared to 10-km G.652D single-mode fiber transmission. Simulation results indicate that the transmission reach can be further extended to over 40 km. The proposed prototype system with low crosstalk is promising for high-speed optical interconnection applications.

Abstract:Optical interconnects have emerged as promising solutions for assisting electrical interconnects in short-reach scenarios, where high bandwidth density and energy efficiency are of particular importance. Mode-division multiplexing (MDM), capable of enhancing the bandwidth density and energy efficiency of optical systems, has drawn tremendous interest. However, the chip-to-chip MDM optical interconnects are impeded by the multimode chip-fiber interfaces, where the transverse modes on the MDM chip mismatch with the linear polarization modes in the circular core few-mode fiber (CCF). Moreover, the high differential group delays (DGDs) of a conventional CCF make the digital signal processing (DSP) computation complex thus consuming high power. To overcome these bottlenecks, a new multimode coupling solution based on a rectangular core few-mode fiber with ultra-low DGDs and an integrated multimode coupler is proposed. Based on this coupling scheme, a chip-to-chip MDM transmission experiment is performed on the TE00, TM00, TE10, and TM10 modes, and the highest bandwidth density of 19.4 Tb s mm -1 is realized at the chip facet. The DSP power consumption is & AP;6% of a conventional CCF-based system. It is believed that this work will pave the way for ultra-compact, high density, low cost, and low computation-complexity optical interconnects, such as data centers, cloud computing, and telecommunications. The multimode chip-fiber interface is a bottleneck in achieving high bandwidth-density optical interconnects employing mode-division multiplexing because the transverse modes of a waveguide on chip mismatch with the linear polarization modes of a conventional few-mode fiber. Abstract:In this paper, a segment-coupled six-mode multiplexer based on multi-core fiber (MCF) is proposed to achieve multiplexing of LP 01 , LP 11 , LP 21 , LP 02 , LP 31 and LP 12 modes according to the principle of mode coupling and phase matching. The mode multiplexer consists of a two-part fiber waveguide that supports six modes of transmission at 1.55 μm wavelength. The transmission performance is analyzed with the finite element method (FEM) and the beam propagation method (BPM). The simulation results show that the insertion loss (IL) of the mode multiplexer is less than 1 dB in the wavelength range of 1.5439–1.5558 μm, and the lowest IL is 0.1837 dB. The coupling efficiencies (CEs) of the six modes are 99.7 %, 92.0 %, 98.6 %, 98.3 %, 97.4 % and 86.6 %, respectively. The designed mode multiplexer dramatically improves fiber space utilization while achieving more higher-order mode conversion. The mode multiplexer can be applied to the mode division multiplexing (MDM) system to solve the problem of mode multiplexing and demultiplexing.

Abstract:Compact fiber-to-chip couplers play an important role in optical interconnections, especially in data centers. However, the development of couplers has been mostly limited to standard single mode fibers, with few devices compatible with multicore and multimode fibers. Through the use of state-of-the-art optimization algorithms, we designed a compact dual-polarization coupler to interface chips and dense multicore fibers, demonstrating, for the first time, coupling to both polarizations of all the cores, with measured coupling efficiency of $-$4.3 dB and with a 3 dB bandwidth of 48 nm. The dual-polarization coupler has footprint of 200 $\mu m^2$ per core, which makes it the smallest fiber-to-chip coupler experimentally demonstrated on a standard silicon-on-insulator platform.

A low crosstalk seven-core five-mode fiber for high density transmission and large capacity communication

Abstract:We propose a seven-core five-mode fiber with air hole-assisted and high refractive index ring structure, and it can be fabricated by the stack-and-draw technique. The air hole auxiliary structure can significantly restrain the energy coupling between cores, and the high refractive index ring structure can meet the requirements of low intra-core crosstalk (XT) by improving the effective refractive index difference (Δn eff ) between adjacent modes. Through analyzing the influence of the number and arrangement of air holes on inter-core XT and effective mode field area (A eff ), it can be achieved the results that the inter-core XT is less than −44 dB/100 km and all the A eff values of LP modes are greater than 100 μm 2 in the seven-core five-mode fiber when the wavelength is 1550 nm and the bending radius (R) is 80 mm. At the same time, the Δn eff between LP 21 and LP 02 mode can be controlled to 1.3 × 10 −3 by adjusting the parameters of the high refractive index ring. In addition, the relative core multiplexing factor (RCMF) of the seven-core five-mode fiber is as high as 88.34. The simulation results show that the seven-core five-mode fiber has high spatial density and is suitable for the communication system with multi-channel and long-distance transmission.

Abstract:Connection loss reduction in ten fiber connectors prepared by the thermally diffused expanded core (TEC) method has been confirmed. The mode field diameters (MFDs) of conventional single mode (SM) fibers were expanded from 9.8 to 13 mu m by thermal treatment considering the influence of loss increase due to fiber axis misalignment. An average connection loss of 0.15 dB for 4-SM-fiber connectors was realized, which was improved by 0.22 dB compared with previous value of 0.37 dB without thermal treatment. The TEC method promises to reduce the coupling loss, which is caused by lateral offset of multifiber connectors, fiber/LD modules, and fiber/waveguide device modules.<>

Abstract:Spatial division multiplexing transmission over few-mode multicore fiber (FM-MCF) recently attracts great interests by simultaneously exploiting two more dimensions than conventional single mode fibers. Abstract:Inexpensive PMMA based Polymer Optical Fiber (POF) has the feature of a large core diameter, high numerical aperture and great flexibility, thus allow low connection cost and cheap LED source. These advantages make it a promising candidate for short distance communication. In this article, coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM) test was performed with commercially available POF using its low loss transmission window. Light of two different wavelengths (650nm and 530nm) were sending on a single POF. Here 650nm red light was used for duplex IP data digital signal transmission and 530nm green light was used for voice signal transmission. Light sources are LEDs. A POF Coupler (Splitter) of 1: 1 ratio was employed as multiplexer and prisms were used for demultiplexing. The channel isolation and insert loss of both channels were measured, for 650nm channel they are 20.5dB; and 17.65dB, for 530nm channel they are 19.16dB and 20.55dB.

Abstract:A single-fibre bidirectional optical split-insertion multiplex module is composed of two optical fibres, two circulators and the OADM module for dual-fibre bidirectional ring network. The output of two circulators are respectively connected with said OADM module. Said optical split-insertion multiplex moduel support 8 wavelengths unidirectionally transmitted over each optical fibre. The interval between wavelengthes is 200 GHz. Each wavelength has the highest speed of 10 Gbit/s. Its advantages include flexible configuration, supporting OADM dynamic routing of next generation and simple structure.

Abstract:Fiber-to-chip couplers are critical devices to support interconnections between fibers and photonic integrated circuits. The advent of spatial division multiplexing (SDM) systems based on multicore fibers makes these devices subject to increasingly demanding footprint and coupling requirements. In addition to size and efficiency requirements, the manufacturing constraints and large parameter space result in a challenging optimization problem. This article applies topology optimization to design three integrated couplers for multicore fibers with an intercore spacing of 32 μm. By individually optimizing the radiating and tapering regions, we design and experimentally demonstrate two devices: the first with perpendicular coupling and an efficiency of −3.8 dB, with a footprint of 15 μm × 10 μm, and the second with a 10° coupling angle and an efficiency of −2.9 dB, with a footprint of 20 μm × 10 μm. Furthermore, by applying topology optimization over the whole design region, we improved the simulated efficiency to −1.9 dB within a footprint of only 10 μm × 10 μm, which represent the most compact CMOS-compatible coupler to date with efficiency among the highest in class. These are the first devices that can enable direct coupling between silicon chips and multicore fibers with intercore separation below 25 μm.

Multimode and Single-Mode Fiber Compatible Graded-Index Multicore Fiber for High Density Optical Interconnect Application

Abstract:We designed and fabricated a graded-index (GI) multicore fiber (MCF) compatible with both standard multimode and single-mode fiber for high density optical interconnect application in large-scale data centers. The proposed fiber supports long-distance multimode transmission at 850 nm as well as quasi-single mode transmission at 1310 nm and 1550 nm. The parameters of the GI-MCF have been optimized to obtain both a small differential mode delay at 850 nm and a small mode field diameter mismatch of less than 0.5 μm with single-mode fiber at 1310 nm and 1550 nm with a negligible inter-core crosstalk. In experiment, we successfully realized the multimode operation over 1 km-long GI-MCF at 850 nm and the quasi-single mode operation over 12.4 km-long GI-MCF at 1310 nm and 1550 nm at a data rate of 7×10-Gb/s. The multi-wavelengths multicore transmission was demonstrated for the first time. The experiment results imply that the proposed GI-MCF satisfies various requirements in such as operating wavelength, accessible distance and interconnect density of large-scale data center, and can effectively reduce the fiber numbers and system complexity.

Abstract:Multidimensional multiplexing technologies have been proven to be a promising scheme to meet the demands of high-capacity optical interconnects and optical processing networks. However, challenges remain to realize multidimensional hybrid multiplexing data transmission and signal processing between few-mode fiber transmission links and on-chip optical processing networks, since the optical coupling between fiber and chip is almost exclusively in the single-mode regime. Here, a multidimensional fiber-to-chip optical processing system is proposed and demonstrated for hybrid wavelength-, mode-, and polarization-division multiplexing signals, where multidimensional coupling between few-mode fiber transmission link and on-chip multi-mode processing network is realized by using a 3D photonic integrated (de)multiplexers on a glass chip as well as 2D photonic integrated (de)multiplexers on a silicon chip, and the on-chip multidimensional optical processing network composed by parallel cascaded micro-ring resonator array performs a function of reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer. By operating wavelength-division multiplexing in conjunction with mode-division multiplexing and polarization-division multiplexing, the communication bandwidth of fiber-to-chip optical processing systems can be further scaled. The work achieves coupling from few-mode fibers to on-chip multi-mode waveguides using a combination of 3D and 2D photonic integrated circuits. It enables the multiplexing, transmission, and processing of hybrid multidimensional signals in terms of wavelength, mode, and polarization. This approach offers a mixed integration solution for multidimensional processing from fiber to chip, thereby boosting the development of multi-dimensional multiplexing. image

Four types of single-mode multicore fiber (MCF) models were evaluated by our scheme with the modified prime code and differential detection. Typically, intercore crosstalk was improved by 7-20 dB in 9-core fibers with an original crosstalk of 10-20 dB.

Abstract:The remarkable recent demonstrations in ultralow loss Inhibited-Coupling (IC) hollow-core photonic crystal fibers (HCPCFs) place them as serious candidates for the next-generation of long-haul fiber optics systems. A hindrance to this prospect, but also to short-haul applications such as micromachining, where stable and high-quality beam delivery is needed, is the challenge to design and fabricate an IC-guiding fiber that combines ultra-low loss, truly and robust single-modeness, and polarization-maintaining operation. Design solutions proposed up to now require a trade-off between low loss and truly single modeness. Here, we propose a novel concept of IC HCPCF for obtaining low-loss and effective single-mode operation. The fiber is endowed with a hybrid cladding composed of a Kagome-tubular lattice (HKT). This new concept of microstructured cladding allows to significantly reduce confinement loss and, at the same time, preserving a truly and robust single-mode operation. Experimental results show a HKT-IC-HCPCF with a minimum loss figure of 1.6 dB/km at 1050 nm and a higher-order modes extinction ratio as high as 47.0 dB for a 10 m long fiber. The robustness of the fiber single-modeness was tested by moving the fiber and varying the coupling conditions. The design proposed herein opens a new route for the accomplishment of HCPCFs that combine robust ultralow loss transmission and single-mode beam delivery and provides new insight into the understanding of IC guidance.
