Abstract:Minor and trace elements can substitute into the crystal lattice of galena at various concentrations. In situ LA-ICP-MS analysis and trace element mapping of a range of galena specimens from different deposit types are used to obtain minor/trace element data, aimed at achieving insight into factors that control minor/trace element partitioning. The previously recognized coupled substitution Ag++(Bi,Sb)3+↔ 2Pb2+ is confirmed. However, the poorer correlation between Ag and (Bi+Sb) when the latter elements are present at high concentrations (~>2000 ppm), suggests that site vacancies may come into play: [2(Bi,Sb)3++o ↔ 3Pb2+]. Galena is the primary host of Tl in all mapped mineral assemblages. Along with Cu, Tl is likely incorporated into galena via the coupled substitution: (Ag,Cu,Tl)++(Bi,Sb)3+↔ 2Pb2+. Tin can reach significant concentrations in galena (>500 ppm). Cd and minor Hg can be incorporated into galena; the simple isovalent substitution (Cd,Hg)2+↔ Pb2+ is inferred. This paper shows for the first time, oscillatory and sector compositional zoning of minor/trace elements (Ag, Sb, Bi, Se, Te, Tl) in galena from two epithermal ores. Zoning is attributed to slow crystal growth into open spaces within the vein at relatively low temperatures. The present data show that galena can host a broader range of elements than previously recognized. For many measured elements, the data sets generated display predictable partitioning patterns between galena and coexisting minerals, which may be dependent on temperature or other factors. Trace element concentrations in galena and their grain-scale distributions may also have potential in the identification of spatial and/or temporal trends within individual metallogenic belts, and as markers of ore formation processes in deposits that have undergone superimposed metamorphism and deformation. Galena trace element geochemistry may also display potential to be used as a trace/minor element vector approach in mineral exploration, notably for recognition of proximal-to-distal trends within a given ore system.

Abstract:Local types of coinage testify to the emerging use of silver in the Balkan interior, possibly related to abundant ore deposits in the region. Here, we present Pb isotope data for silver coins minted by local tribes and settlements (anepigraphic coins attributed to the Derrones/Laeaei, Damastion, Pelagia, Kings of Paeonia) between the 5th and 3rd centuries BCE. For comparison, we analysed coinage of the potential Greek emporia Dyrrhachium and Apollonia for their main element and Pb-Ag isotope compositions. Statistical data evaluation demonstrates close material connections between coins from the Balkan interior and identify a predominantly local raw material provenance. The majority of Damastion's issues defines a tight cluster fitting Strabo's (VII.7.8) account that the settlement possessed nearby silver mines in the Balkan interior. Novobërdë/Novo Brdo (Kosovo) can be plausibly hypothesised among the available reference data to have been one of the main ore districts supplying the mint. Mixing is evident for coins from the Kings of Paeonia and coinage attributed to the Derrones/Laeaei. Virtually identical end-members suggest that Paeonian regal coinage recycled tribal issues with contribution of metal obtained from Damastion's hypothesised mines. Contemporaneous coinage struck by Dyrrhachium as well as end-members calculated for Thasos and the Macedon kingdom (Albarede et al. in Bullion mixtures in silver coinage from ancient Greece and Egypt, J Archaeol Sci 162:105918, 2024a) signal metal sourced from the Balkans, presumably the Macedonian/Paeonian border area. Comparison of data from Greek city-states and coinage issued by Apollonia and Dyrrhachium for the Romans demonstrates a change in the type and origin of raw materials and bullion composition, indicating a shift in monetary customs and possibly metal production technology.

Abstract:The Paleoproterozoic Stollberg Zn-Pb-Ag plus magnetite ore field contains SVALS-type stratabound, limestone-skarn hosted sulphide deposits within volcanic (bimodal felsic and mafic rocks)/volcaniclastic rocks metamorphosed to the amphibolite facies. The sulphide ores consist of semi-massive to disseminated to vein-network sphalerite-galena and pyrrhotite (with subordinate pyrite, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite and magnetite). Thermochemical considerations and stabilities of minerals in the systems K-Al-Si-O-H and Fe-S-O and sulphur isotope values for sulphides of δ 34 S VCDT = +1.12 to +5.71 ‰ suggest that sulphur most likely formed by inorganic reduction of seawater sulphate that was carried in hydrothermally modified seawater fluid under the following approximate physicochemical conditions: T = 250 o –350 o C, δ 34 S ΣS = +3 ‰, I = ∼1 m NaCl and a total dissolved S content of ∼0.01 to 0.1 moles/kg H 2 O. However, a magmatic contribution of sulphur cannot be discounted. Carbon and oxygen isotope compositions of calcite in altered rocks spatially associated with mineralisation show values of δ 13 C VPDB = −2.3 to −0.8 ‰ and δ 18 O VSMOW = +9.5 to +11.2 ‰, with one anomalous sample exhibiting values of δ 13 C VPDB = −0.1 ‰ and δ 18 O VSMOW = +10.9 ‰. Most carbonates in ore show lighter C and O isotope values than those of Proterozoic (Orosirian) limestones and are likely the result of premetamorphic hydrothermal alteration involving modified seawater followed by decarbonation during regional metamorphism. The isotopically light C and O isotope values are consistent with those for carbonates spatially associated with other SVALS-type deposits in the Bergslagen ore district and suggest that such values may be used for exploration purposes.

Abstract:Lead-bismuth (Pb-Bi) minerals of the galena (PbS)-matildite (AgBiS 2 ) series and lillianite homologues (Pb 3–2x Ag x Bi 2+x S 6 ) are intergrown with electrum (Au-Ag alloy) and chalcopyrite (CuFeS 2 ) in specific bands within a colloform-banded vein at the Switchback epithermal deposit in southern Mexico. A macro-to-nano scale study revealed that these minerals fill small (<200 μm) cavities in the gangue minerals, showing curvilinear boundaries, bleb-like morphologies, and rounded nanoparticles (~100 nm). These observations are consistent with growth in a molten system from a precursor Pb-Bi melt containing Au, Ag, and Cu. Minerals in the galena-matildite series typically display Widmanstätten textures (i.e., octahedral-like or basket-weave matildite ss lamellae in the galena ss matrix), which have been traditionally linked to the decomposition of a high-temperature solid solution. However, galena ss and matildite ss show nano-scale sinuous reaction fronts and replacement relicts ("islands") while maintaining the [011] Galena || [100] Matildite crystallographic orientation relationship. This suggests a topotaxial growth of matildite ss mediated by coupled dissolution-reprecipitation reactions between galena ss and the metallic melt upon cooling. A similar scenario is proposed for Pb-Bi sulfosalt intergrowths, which replace galena-matildite and electrum and grow topotaxially along (200) Galena . Collectively, these results suggest that Pb-Bi melts can exist in epithermal fluids, acting as precursors for the crystallization of ore minerals and able to sequester precious metals. This model explains abnormally high Au-Ag enrichments observed in some deposits that contain Pb-Bi ores.

Abstract:This paper presents the interdisciplinary investigation (archaeology, geochemistry, history) of a medieval silver and lead production site located in southern France, in the Minier valley (Occitanie, Aveyron, Le‐Viala‐du‐Tarn). In order to identify the production sites, in situ geochemical surveys were carried out using a portable X‐ray fluorescence spectrometer and differential GPS, guided on the analysis of medieval archival sources. The cartographic representation of the metal concentrations in the surface horizons shows significant enrichment of zinc and lead in the vicinity of the mines. This first type of enrichment makes it possible to highlight the activities of separation of sphalerite and silver‐bearing galena. The galena thus isolated on the hillsides is then transported to the vicinity of watercourses, where it is crushed, washed, and smelted. These secondary activities result in a last type of enrichment in which only lead is found in large quantities. The cross‐referencing of the information made it possible to overcome the challenges related to the location of the mineral processing workshops, which were often invisible on the surface. The medieval workshops have been located and a function suggested, outlining the first trends in the spatial and social division of labour and providing a solid corpus for future archaeological excavations. Finally, this study highlights the persistence of significant metal contamination in the soils of a rural valley and encourages the consideration of former mining areas when examining the environmental impact of metal production.

Abstract:In mining and smelting sites, where diverse potentially toxic element-rich wastes (e.g., waste rocks and slags) are stored over a mineralized background, difficulties arise to decipher the influence of multiple sources in the contaminated compartments of the critical zone. This paper aimed at testing the coupling of Pb and Sb isotopes to distinguish the sources of an inherited anthropogenic contamination in a mining and smelting environment. To do so, a selection of contamination sources (ore-bearing rocks, n = 4; slags, n = 2; stack residues - matte, n = 2), mine dewatering gallery sediments ( n = 3), river sediments ( n = 3) and soil horizons ( n = 31) were sampled at the Peisey-Nancroix mining and smelting site (PbAg, French Alps), which has been abandoned for >150 years. The contamination sources, the soils and some sediments display similar 206 Pb/ 207 Pb ratios (1.173 ± 0.003), but distinct Sb isotopic signature (δ 123 Sb). Slags and stack residues have similar high δ 123 Sb signature (+0.62 to +0.78 ‰), whereas the ore-bearing rocks display lower δ 123 Sb signatures (−0.28 to +0.10 ‰). Such a result indicates Sb isotopes fractionation during smelting, suggesting Sb may be used to distinguish the contribution of metallurgic wastes from that of ore-bearing rocks to the environmental contamination. However, our results indicate that Sb isotopes alone cannot be used to discuss the degree of anthropogenic contamination, and must be coupled to another isotopic system. Coupling Pb and Sb isotopic systems, makes it possible to determine the degree of anthropogenic contamination (Pb isotopes) and the contribution of local ore vs slags (Sb isotopes) to it. This multi-isotope approach provides an added advantage to identify mining and metallurgical sources of contamination more accurately than using a single isotopic system.

Abstract:The voltammetry of microparticles (VIMP) methodology was applied to a set of submicrosamples from the corrosion layers of copper artifacts from the archaeological site of La Vital (Gandia, Spain), dated back to 4200 to 3900 BP, attached to graphite electrodes in contact with aqueous acetate buffer at pH 4.50. Signals for the reduction of cuprite plus malachite, dominating the composition of the corrosion layers, and tenorite, were used for grouping the samples. A model to describe their relative concentrations assuming gradients following a potential law is proposed and tested with experimental data. Correlation of VIMP sample grouping with lead isotope data in literature permitted to discriminate archaeological samples depending on the provenance of raw materials and the manufacturing process.

Abstract:Galena trace element signatures and element partitioning between associated sulfides are poorly constrained, especially in Mississippi Valley-type (MVT) Zn-Pb deposits. This study reports laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) spot analysis data of different stages of galena as well as elemental mapping results of typical sulfide assemblages in the Daliangzi Zn-Pb deposit, one of the largest MVT deposits in the Sichuan-Yunnan-Guizhou (SYG) metallogenic province, SW China. The galena is generally enriched in Sb and Ag, with minor Cd, Cu, and As, but depleted in Bi. Antimony was generally incorporated into galena lattice via Sb3+ + Ag+ ↔ 2Pb2+, and the substitution of 2Sb3+ + □ (vacancy) ↔ 3Pb2+ also occurred at high Sb content level (>1200 ppm). Direct substitution is the main way for Cd incorporation, while Cu and As may exist via coupled substitution. Micro-inclusions also play important roles in the incorporation of Sb, As, and Cu in some cases. The elemental distribution maps show that Sb, Ag, and Tl are dominantly incorporated into galena, while Cd, Fe, Mn, Cu, As, Ga, and Ge are primarily concentrated in sphalerite. However, when present tennantite-tetrahedrite will become the preferential host phase of Sb, Ag, Cu, and As. This elemental partitioning verifies that the preferential host sulfide for trace elements is controlled by intrinsic factors (e.g., oxidation state and ion radius) rather than external factors (e.g., metal sources, pressure, temperature, and redox conditions). External factors, such as temperature, may be vital for the partitioning of a given element (e.g., Cd) between priority and subordinate hosts. Additionally, the galena trace element characteristics are found to vary significantly with the ore genetic types, which appears to imply the applicability of galena geochemistry in the ore type discrimination.

Abstract:The Iberian Pyrite Belt (IPB) represents one of the largest districts of volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits in the world, and is a critical source of base metals (Cu, Pb, and Zn) for Europe. Confirmed resources exceed 1700 Mt of massive sulfides with grades of around 1.2% Cu, 1% Pb, and 3% Zn as well as more than 300 Mt of stockwork-type copper mineralization. Significant resources of Sn, precious metals (Au and Ag), and critical metals (Co, Bi, Sb, In, and Se) have also been evaluated. The genesis of these deposits is related to a complex geological evolution during the late Devonian and Mississippian periods. The geological record of such evolution is represented by three main lithological units: Phyllite–Quartzite Group, the volcano–sedimentary Complex (VSC), and the so-called Culm Group. The sulfide deposits are located in the VSC, associated with felsic volcanic rocks or sedimentary rocks such as black shales. The massive sulfide deposits occur as tabular bodies and replacement masses associated with both volcanic and sedimentary rocks. Their mineralogical composition is relatively simple, dominated by pyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, and galena. Their origin is related to three evolutionary stages at increasing temperatures, and a subsequent stage associated with the Variscan deformation. The present paper summarizes the latest developments in the IPB and revises research areas requiring further investigation.

Abstract:Abstract Gold parting enabled the production of very pure gold for various purposes from the sixth century BC onwards, but analytical proof of this pyrotechnical process is difficult. We describe a new analytical approach for the identification of purified gold combining silver and copper isotopic with trace element analyses. Parting experiments were performed with gold-silver-copper alloys using the classical salt cementation process to investigate potential silver and copper isotope fractionation and changes in trace element concentrations. In addition, we provide the first comprehensive dataset of silver isotope ratios of archaeological gold objects from the Mediterranean and Central Europe to test whether or not gold refining can be identified on the basis of isotope systematics. The results show that very heavy silver and copper isotopic compositions are clear evidence for parted gold, but that the application of copper isotopes might be limited.

Abstract:The elemental analysis of ancient gold items in the context of provenance studies in archaeology and history may characterize metallic stocks and highlight metal circulation in a given space and time; however, they cannot point to a specific geological province and/or ore. In contrast, isotope analysis may offer valuable insight into provenance studies. For instance, lead isotopes may provide relations with the geodynamic provinces of the host mineralizations and some insight into their timing. Iron and copper isotopes may give information on the ore type, i.e. , supergene versus hydrothermal or igneous. We thus adapted a single column separative chemistry, initially intended for silicate rocks, for ancient gold matrices to recover purified fractions of Pb, Fe and Cu based on anionic exchange chromatography. Isotopic measurements of these elements on new home-made gold standards, as well as on ancient gold test coins, were carried out using Multi-Collector – Inductively Coupled Plasma – Mass Spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS). Our results show that it is possible to obtain precise and accurate measurements of Pb, Cu and Fe isotope compositions in gold matrices reflecting various elemental compositions. We characterized our gold test coins with the following uncertainties: ±0.036 on 208 Pb/ 204 Pb, ±0.016 on 207 Pb/ 204 Pb, ±0.019 on 206 Pb/ 204 Pb, ±0.00041 on 208 Pb/ 206 Pb and ±0.00006 on 207 Pb/ 206 Pb (2SD; n = 14); ±0.047‰ for δ 57 Fe IRMM14 (2SE; n = 15) and ±0.043‰ for δ 65 Cu SRM976 (2SE; n = 12). These uncertainties are in good agreement with the long-term (>1.5 years) reproducibilities (2SD) estimated in the course of this study on the basis of repeated measurement of in-house standards. The potential of these new tracers in addressing archaeological and historical questions, such as the provenance of ancient gold coins, is then emphasized. The combination of Pb, Fe and Cu isotopes with gold chemistry appears particularly promising.

A Preliminary Study on Silver Isotopic Composition in Polymetallic Ore Deposits in Eastern China

Abstract:A preliminary survey of silver isotopic composition in four polymetallic ores in eastern China shows a larger variation in δ109Ag from −0.014‰ to +0.983‰, which is within the total ranges for the entire respective ore deposit types worldwide. The diversity of silver isotopic compositions in ore-deposits reported here and previous studies seemed to preclude simple isotopic links to particular sources, but reflected the silver isotope fractionation in transport- and deposit-related processes instead. The δ109Ag values in supergene samples from the Qixiashan Pb−Zn−Ag polymetallic deposit are more positive, in consistent with the statistical δ109Ag distribution from -0.4‰ to +2.2‰ in 36 pieces of supergene ore samples around the World, which reflects the diverse controls on silver isotope fractionation from the first-order thermodynamic effect, reduction-mediated reaction, remobilization of silver with surficial low-temperature weathering processes. The hypogene samples in Dazhuangzi orogenic Au−Ag ore deposit, have δ109Ag values close to 0, which implies that equilibrium partitioning associated with metal sources at the high-temperature does not result in a resolvable difference in silver isotopic compositions. By contrast, the hypogene samples which are dominated by pyrite without visible silver minerals (i.e., skarn iron ore deposit in Edongnan) have shown the largest variation range of δ109Ag, followed by that from the porphyry copper ore in Zijinshan. It could be concluded that the surface adsorption and/or lattice substitution are important factors to control Ag isotope fractionation in ore-forming processes, especially for skarn deposits with only pyrite. The perspective of silver isotope shows great potentials to understand the processes that lead to the concentrations of metals to economic levels and to constrain the physicochemical conditions during ore-mineralization in metallic ore-deposits.

Abstract:The historic silver mining district of Freiberg (Germany) comprises hydrothermal vein-style mineralization of Permian and Cretaceous age. We compare sphalerite compositions with associated ore-forming fluids and constrain the behavior of critical metals such as In, Ge, and Ga in contrasting hydrothermal environments. Fluid inclusion studies reveal that the Permian veins formed due to boiling and cooling of a low-salinity (0 to 6% eq. w[NaCl]) magmatic-hydrothermal fluid at 350 to 230 °C. In contrast, Cretaceous veins formed by mixing of highly saline (17 to 24% eq. w[NaCl + CaCl2] and variable Na/(Na + Ca) ratios) brines at low temperatures (~ 120 °C). Sulfides of the Permian ore stage have a narrow range of δ34SVCDT from − 2.3 to + 0.9‰, while the sulfides of the Cretaceous stage have a large scatter and significantly more negative δ34SVCDT values (− 30.9 to − 5.5‰), supporting the different nature of the hydrothermal systems. Contrasting fluid systems and ore-forming mechanisms correspond to markedly different trace element systematics in sphalerite. Permian sphalerite is significantly enriched in In (up to 2500 μg/g In) relative to two sphalerite generations of Cretaceous veins. The latter have higher Ge (up to 2700 μg/g Ge) and Ga (up to 1000 μg/g Ga) concentrations. The observed trace element systematics of different sphalerite generations imply that In is enriched in high-temperature, low- to intermediate-salinity fluids with a significant magmatic-hydrothermal fluid component, while Ge and Ga are more concentrated in low-temperature, high-salinity crustal fluids with no obvious magmatic-hydrothermal affiliation.

Abstract:This study presents a non-invasive in situ methodology based on the use of portable elemental (energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, EDXRF) and molecular (Raman spectroscopy) spectroscopic-based instrumentation as a tool to obtain preliminary information to assist subsequent provenance studies of archaeological cinnabar pigments in the laboratory. In this work, six cinnabar mineral ores, extracted from the Almadén mining district and an original raw pigment coming from the Archaeological Park of Pompeii have been analyzed. As the detection capacities and spectral resolution of the portable instruments are usually poorer than the equivalent benchtop equipment, a comparative study of the in-situ and laboratory results was conducted. Afterward, chemometric data treatment was performed considering both the molecular and elemental information. According to the elemental results, it was not possible to find a strong concordance between the cinnabar ores and the pigment from Pompeii, suggesting the need for additional methodologies in the laboratory (isotope ratio analysis) to complete a proper provenance study. However, this approach was useful to classify the ores according to their mineralogical differences. Therefore, this methodology could be proposed as a useful tool to conduct a representative sampling of the cinnabar mineral ores to be considered in a provenance study of archaeological cinnabar pigments.

Abstract:The behavior of silver in hydrothermal ore-forming systems has been the subject of numerous studies. Equilibrium and Rayleigh-type isotope fractionation of silver during transport- and deposition-related processes in silver-bearing hydrothermal ore-forming systems are investigated experimentally and theoretically in this study. The results of open-system evaporation experiments in a simple Ag+-H2O system show that the transfer kinetics of silver from liquid to vapor follow a second-order kinetic reaction model with activation energy (Ea) values of 131.20±14.63 kJ·mol-1 and 145.38±2.93 kJ·mol-1 in neutral and acidic solutions, respectively. No loss of silver from the solution was observed during surface evaporation, and the rate constant, ka, increased exponentially with temperature above 343 K at ambient pressure. During vapor-liquid separation, the vapor is enriched in 107Ag, whereas the liquid is enriched in 109Ag. The silver isotope fractionation follows a Rayleigh-type fractionation model with αvapor-liquid factors of 0.99936-0.99985 at 373 K under neutral and acidic conditions, respectively, whereas the temperature-dependent equilibrium isotope fractionation follows the relationship, 1000lnαvapor-liquid= -0.0039 × 106/T2 – 0.0037 based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This explains the relatively narrow interval of δ109Ag values (from -0.3 to +0.4‰) analyzed in Ag-bearing veins from hydrothermal ore-deposits. Based on the bond-strength of Ag to the nearest atoms in minerals, the 109Ag enrichment decreases in the order pyrargyrite, argentite, proustite, stephanite, native silver, iodargyrite, chlorargyrite. The equilibrium silver isotope fractionation between fluid and mineral during ore formation can be considerable depending on the temperature, the nature of the silver-bearing mineral deposited, whether or not there is vapor-liquid phase separation, and whether there is reduction of oxidized silver (Ag(+1)) to the reduced form Ag(0). Consequently, the source signatures of δ109Ag are altered significantly by transport- and deposition-related processes during ore formation (e.g., boiling, precipitation and reduction). A new silver isotope-geothermometer is proposed based on the equilibrium silver isotope fractionation between argentite and stephanite. This geothermometer, which employs the relationship 1000lnαargentite-stephanite = 0.0128× 106/T2 + 0.0014, can be used to constrain temperature in silver-bearing hydrothermal systems provided that argentite and stephanite are in equilibrium.

Abstract:Silver isotopes have been extensively used in environment, archaeology, and economic geology. Nevertheless, accurate analysis of Ag isotope ratios faces challenges caused by the presence of matrix elements ( e.g. Zn, Cu, and Pb) in most sulfide samples due to isobaric and polyatomic interferences during multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICPMS) routines. Most of these elements, such as Cu and Pb, can be effectively removed after the first column through a tandem column setup. However, the complete removal of Zn from Ag remains a significant unresolved issue, particularly given their common coexistence in sulfide minerals. Combining previous studies and the chemical principle of ion exchange resin, we optimized a two-stage ion exchange procedure by meticulously adjusting solution volumes and the column separation process. A condensed Zn-doped NIST SRM (silver international standard reference material) 978a was tested for AG50W-X8 resin following our modified procedure, resulting in distinct elution curves of Ag and Zn. Subsequently, three sphalerite samples were selected for the optimized two-stage ion exchange procedure, and ICP-MS results of silver elution fractions demonstrated complete separation of Ag and Zn. The whole procedure achieved an Ag yield exceeding 98.1 ± 2.3% (2SD, n = 4). NIST SRM 978a and IAEA-S-1 (an in-house standard) were tested for long-term reproducibility with −0.001 ± 0.030‰ (2SD, n = 25) and 0.054 ± 0.023‰ (2SD, n = 22) of δ 109 Ag, respectively, indicating the high accuracy in MC-ICPMS routines. Zn-doped NIST SRM 978a and sphalerite samples were further subjected to the modified procedure, and they exhibited values of 0.004 ± 0.014‰ (2SD, n = 3) and −0.214 ± 0.033‰ (2SD, n = 12), respectively, for δ 109 Ag. Moreover, we selected eight sphalerite samples from several hypogene deposits in China and obtained δ 109 Ag values from −0.229‰ to 2.227‰, indicating the significant Ag isotopic fractionation between Ag-bearing and Zn-rich minerals in hypogene deposits. In conclusion, this study shows the feasibility of accurately measuring Ag isotopes in Zn-rich samples and reveals their application potential in related Ag-bearing and Zn-rich deposits.

Abstract:The Bou Dahar Pb-Zn district, located in the Moroccan High Atlas, is a typical carbonate-hosted Pb-Zn ore district (>30 Mt at 4 wt.% Pb, 4 wt.% Zn). In situ trace element analysis was performed using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) on galena and cerussite from different ore types. The galena is generally enriched in Ag and Sb, secondarily enriched in Cu, with a trace amount of Cd and As, but extremely depleted in Bi and Tl. The main substitution mechanism in galena is (Ag, Cu)+ + Sb3+ ↔ 2Pb2+, and at high Sb concentrations, the further substitution of 2Sb3+ + □ ↔ 3Pb2+ (where □ represents a vacancy) took place. Micro-inclusions of Cu-Sb-bearing minerals (such as tetrahedrite) and Ag-bearing minerals (such as acanthite) may exist in some situations. The features of trace elements in galena show the existence of different coupled substitutions in vein-related ore, breccia-related ore, and strata-bound ore. This suggests that the Bou Dahar district experienced multistage mineralization. The MVT model alone cannot fully explain the ore-forming process. The cerussite replacing strata-bound galena is enriched in Sr, Ba, Ag, and Cu, with minor Sb, As, and Tl. Strontium and Ba are directly substituted with Pb in the cerussite lattice. Copper and Ag are likely present in cerussite as nano-inclusions, which differs from the coupled substitution mechanism of the original galena. High concentrations of Ag may occur due to minor electrum inclusions. The enrichment of Ag, Cu, and Au in cerussite during the oxidation process may guide the optimization of ore processing, especially in extracting valuable trace/minor elements.

Abstract:In this article, the Islamic gold coins collections of the University of Valencia is studied for the first time for its elemental composition and colorimetric properties. To that end, non-destructive elemental analysis using energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence is applied to obtain the coins' elemental profile. Additionally, the colour of the coins is assessed using smartphone-based colorimetry as an innovative non-invasive method. Results indicate that the Islamic coins could be attributed to Almoravids, and the gold origin could be the famous Sudanese gold, an ore which was valued all over the world. Also, the text found in the coins was translated and allowed to objectively identify the mint and year. Based on these results, it can be seen that the earliest coins struck in the Iberian Peninsula are characterised by slightly lower gold concentrations than the ones struck in the northern part of Africa, pointing towards a potential recycling of coins which already circulated in the area. In conclusion, this work provides new analytical insights into a peculiar and unique type of samples, allowing to draw some conclusions in terms of their origins and materials, and for the first time allows to characterise the chromatic coordinates of this type of samples.

Abstract:Wall paintings in the Roman period were used to decorate both public and private spaces; therefore, they reflect, on the one hand, ideas and convictions, and on the other, daily activities and socio-economic models. Characterizations of the pigments used in mural paintings are useful for determining the economic status of a specific settlement or the importance of a particular area or the buildings within it, since the cost of different pigments varied widely. Isotope analysis can be used to identify the provenance of pigments and to establish whether the raw materials are local, regional, or imported. This provides very important information, as it might be related to both the quality and the cost of the pigments, which, in turn, might be indicators of the socio-economic status of the area in question. The present study examines the sulfur isotope ratios of the cinnabar used in Roman wall paintings sampled from the high-status Roman Domus of Casa d’Avinyó and compares them with the ratios of the analyzed geological ores sampled at various Spanish cinnabar/mercury mines. The results exclude the possibility of the cinnabar being imported from outside the Iberian Peninsula. An isotopic analysis also suggested a few possible sources for the pigments.
