Abstract:The paper aims at establishing Riemann-Hilbert problems and presenting soliton solutions for nonlocal reverse-time nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) hierarchies associated with higher-order matrix spectral problems. The Sokhotski-Plemelj formula is used to transform the Riemann-Hilbert problems into Gelfand-Levitan-Marchenko type integral equations. A new formulation of solutions to special Riemann-Hilbert problems with the identity jump matrix, corresponding to the reflectionless inverse scattering transforms, is proposed and applied to construction of soliton solutions to each system in the considered nonlocal reversetime NLS hierarchies.

Abstract:We give a review of the systematic construction of hierarchies of soliton flows and integrable elliptic equations associated to a complex semi-simple Lie algebra and finite order automorphisms. For example, the non-linear Schrödinger equation, the n-wave equation, and the sigma-model are soliton flows; and the equation for harmonic maps from the plane to a compact Lie group, for primitive maps from the plane to a $k$-symmetric space, and constant mean curvature surfaces and isothermic surfaces in space forms are integrable elliptic systems. We also give a survey of (i) construction of solutions using loop group factorizations, (ii) PDEs in differential geometry that are soliton equations or elliptic integrable systems, (iii) similarities and differences of soliton equations and integrable elliptic systems.

Abstract:We find two one-parametric families of recursion operators and use them to construct higher symmetries for the Calogero--Bogoyavlenskii--Schiff breaking soliton equation. Then we prove that the recursion operators from the first family pair-wise commute with respect to the Nijenhuis bracket (are compatible).

Abstract:A formalism of systematic construction of integrable non-autonomous deformations of soliton hierarchies is presented. The theory is formulated as an initial value problem (IVP) for an associated Frobenius integrability condition on a Lie algebra. It is showed that this IVP has a formal solution and within the framewrok of two particular subalgebras of the hereditary Lie algebra the explicit forms of this formal solution are presented. Finally, this formalism is applied to Korteveg-de Vries, dispersive water waves and Ablowitz-Kaup-Newell-Segur soliton hierarchies.

Abstract:By imposing a nonlocal reverse-time type constraint on a general coupled nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation, we propose a novel nonlocal reverse-time NLS equation which involves a free real parameter and a free complex parameter. The introduced nonlocal NLS equation is integrable since it admits a 3×3$$3\times 3$$ matrix Lax pair formulation. By solving the proposed nonlocal NLS equation, one can obtain the soliton solutions of the general coupled NLS equation with special initial conditions. By extending the Riemann–Hilbert (RH) approach to the proposed nonlocal NLS equation, we further explore and reveal its spectral structure in detail which is different from that of the general coupled NLS equation, from which three types of soliton solutions are rigorously obtained. In addition, the soliton analysis is performed to reveal the soliton dynamical behaviors underlying the soliton solutions.

Abstract:In the first part of the paper we present the dressing method which generates multi-soliton solutions to integrable systems of nonlinear partial differential equations. We compare the approach of Neugebauer with that of Zakharov, Shabat and Mikhailov. In both cases we discuss the group reductions and reductions defined by some multilinear constraints on matrices of the linear problem. The second part of the paper describes the soliton surfaces approach. The so called Sym-Tafel formula simplifies the explicit reconstruction of the surface from the knowledge of its fundamental forms, unifies various integrable nonlinearities and enables one to apply powerful methods of the theory of solitons to geometrical problems. The Darboux-Bianchi-B\"acklund transformation (i.e., the dressing method on the level of soliton surfaces) reconstructs explicitly many classical transformations of XIX century. We present examples of interesting classes of surfaces obtained from spectral problems. In particular, we consider spectral problems in Clifford algebras associated with orthogonal coordinates. Finally, compact formulas for multi-soliton surfaces are discussed and applied for the Localized Induction Equation with axial flow.

Abstract:This paper studies the multi-component Sasa-Satsuma integrable hierarchies via an arbitrary-order matrix spectral problem, based on the zero curvature formulation. A generalized coupled Sasa-Satsuma equation is derived from the multi-component Sasa-Satsuma integrable hierarchies with a bi-Hamiltonian structure. The inverse scattering transform of the generalized coupled Sasa-Satsuma equation is presented by the spatial matrix spectral problem and the Riemann–Hilbert method, which enables us to obtain the N-soliton solutions. And then the dynamics of one- and two-soliton solutions are discussed and presented graphically. Asymptotic analyses of the presented two-soliton solution are finally analyzed.

Abstract:We consider the Riemann—Hilbert method for initial problem of the vector Gerdjikov—Ivanov equation, and obtain the formula for its N-soliton solution, which is expressed as a ratio of (N +1)×(N +1) determinant and N × N determinant. Furthermore, by applying asymptotic analysis, the simple elastic interactions of N-soliton are confirmed, and the shifts of phase and position are also explicitly displayed.

Abstract:Reduced nonlocal matrix integrable modified Korteweg–de Vries (mKdV) hierarchies are presented via taking two transpose-type group reductions in the matrix Ablowitz–Kaup–Newell–Segur (AKNS) spectral problems. One reduction is local, which replaces the spectral parameter λ with its complex conjugate λ∗, and the other one is nonlocal, which replaces the spectral parameter λ with its negative complex conjugate −λ∗. Riemann–Hilbert problems and thus inverse scattering transforms are formulated from the reduced matrix spectral problems. In view of the specific distribution of eigenvalues and adjoint eigenvalues, soliton solutions are constructed from the reflectionless Riemann–Hilbert problems.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the generalized Ito equation. By using the truncated Painlevé analysis method, we successfully derive its nonlocal symmetry and Bäcklund transformation, respectively. By introducing new dependent variables for the nonlocal symmetry, we find the corresponding Lie point symmetry. Moreover, we construct the interaction solution between soliton and cnoidal periodic wave of the equation by considering the consistent tanh expansion method. The conservation laws of the equation are also obtained with a detailed derivation.

Abstract:The subject of this paper is a nonlocal Hirota equation. Firstly, we provide associated Lax pair and zero curvature condition to establish the integrability. Secondly, we construct <i>N</i>-fold Darboux transformation (DT) by taking the form of determinants. Thirdly, we derive parity-time (PT) symmetric broken bright soliton solutions under zero background and PT symmetric unbroken dark (or antidark) soliton solutions under plane wave background and simulate dynamic behaviors of those solutions. Respectively, we call solitons with instability as symmetry broken solitons and with stability as symmetry unbroken solitons. The root why two kinds of solitons occur is eigenvalue choices, leading to self-induced potential's change. For bright solitons, potential terms both show unstable states, while interestingly their product (namely self-induced potential) is stable with the same parameter values. For dark and antidark solitons, potentials and their product all show stable states, and we present possible collision combinations of two potentials with the help of DT.

Abstract:Staring from a new spectral problem, a hierarchy of the soliton equations is derived. It is shown that the associated hierarchies are infinite-dimensional integrable Hamiltonian systems. By the procedure of nonlinearization of the Lax pairs, the integrable decomposition of the whole soliton hierarchy is given. Further, we construct two integrable coupling systems for the hierarchy by the conception of semidirect sums of Lie algebras.

Abstract:In this paper, we study Riemannian maps whose base manifolds admit a Ricci soliton and give a non-trivial example of such a Riemannian map. First, we find Riemannian curvature tensor for the base manifolds of Riemannian map $F$. Further, we obtain the Ricci tensor and calculate the scalar curvature of the base manifold. Moreover, we obtain necessary conditions for the leaves of $rangeF_\ast$ to be Ricci soliton, almost Ricci soliton, and Einstein. We also obtain necessary conditions for the leaves of $(rangeF_\ast)^\bot$ to be Ricci soliton and Einstein. Also, we calculate the scalar curvatures of $rangeF_\ast$ and $(rangeF_\ast)^\bot$ by using Ricci soliton. Finally, we study the harmonicity and biharmonicity of such a Riemannian map. We obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for such a Riemannian map between Riemannian manifolds to be harmonic. We also obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for a Riemannian map from a Riemannian manifold to a space form that admits Ricci soliton to be harmonic and biharmonic.

'Riemann Equations' in Bidifferential Calculus

Abstract:We consider equations that formally resemble a matrix Riemann (or Hopf) equation in the framework of bidifferential calculus. With different choices of a first-order bidifferential calculus, we obtain a variety of equations, including a semi-discrete and a fully discrete version of the matrix Riemann equation. A corresponding universal solution-generating method then either yields a (continuous or discrete) Cole-Hopf transformation, or leaves us with the problem of solving Riemann equations (hence an application of the hodograph method). If the bidifferential calculus extends to second order, solutions of a system of `Riemann equations' are also solutions of an equation that arises, on the universal level of bidifferential calculus, as an integrability condition. Depending on the choice of bidifferential calculus, the latter can represent a number of prominent integrable equations, like self-dual Yang-Mills, as well as matrix versions of the two-dimensional Toda lattice, Hirota's bilinear difference equation, (2+1)-dimensional NLS, KP and Davey-Stewartson equations. For all of them, a recent (non-isospectral) binary Darboux transformation result in bidifferential calculus applies, which can be specialized to generate solutions of the associated `Riemann equations'. For the latter, we clarify the relation between these specialized binary Darboux transformations and the aforementioned solution-generating method. From (arbitrary size) matrix versions of the `Riemann equations' associated with an integrable equation, possessing a bidifferential calculus formulation, multi-soliton-type solutions of the latter can be generated. This includes `breaking' multi-soliton-type solutions of the self-dual Yang-Mills and the (2+1)-dimensional NLS equation, which are parametrized by solutions of Riemann equations.

Abstract:We construct one soliton solutions for the nonlinear Schroedinger equation with variable quadratic Hamiltonians in a unified form by taking advantage of a complete (super) integrability of generalized harmonic oscillators. The soliton wave evolution in external fields with variable quadratic potentials is totally determined by the linear problem, like motion of a classical particle with acceleration, and the (self-similar) soliton shape is due to a subtle balance between the linear Hamiltonian (dispersion and potential) and nonlinearity in the Schroedinger equation by the standards of soliton theory. Most linear (hypergeometric, Bessel) and a few nonlinear (Jacobian elliptic, second Painleve transcendental) classical special functions of mathematical physics are linked together through these solutions, thus providing a variety of nonlinear integrable cases. Examples include bright and dark solitons, and Jacobi elliptic and second Painleve transcendental solutions for several variable Hamiltonians that are important for current research in nonlinear optics and Bose-Einstein condensation. The Feshbach resonance matter wave soliton management is briefly discussed from this new perspective.
General Rational Solutions and Soliton Solutions of the Nonlocal Resonant Nonlinear Schrodinger Equations

Abstract:General rational solutions for the nonlocal resonant nonlinear Schrodinger equations are derived by using the Hirota bilinear method and the KP hierarchy reduction method. These rational solutions are presented in terms of determinants in which the elements are algebraic expressions. A weaker condition is given for KP reduction in the nonlocal case. The dynamics of first-order solutions are investigated in details. As a special case, we studied rantional solutions of the RNLS equation. Moreover, soliton solutions of the RNLS equation are given by using the Backlund transformation and nonlinear superposition formula.

Fitness versus Longevity in Age-Structured Population Dynamics

Abstract:We examine the dynamics of an age-structured population model in which the life expectancy of an offspring may be mutated with respect to that of the parent. While the total population of the system always reaches a steady state, the fitness and age characteristics exhibit counter-intuitive behavior as a function of the mutational bias. By analytical and numerical study of the underlying rate equations, we show that if deleterious mutations are favored, the average fitness of the population reaches a steady state, while the average population age is a decreasing function of the overall fitness. When advantageous mutations are favored, the average population fitness grows linearly with time t, while the average age is independent of fitness. For no mutational bias, the average fitness grows as t^{2/3}.

Abstract:The nonlinear Schr{\"o}dinger (NLS) equation, which incorporates higher-order dispersive terms, is widely employed in the theoretical analysis of various physical phenomena. In this study, we explore the non-commutative extension of the higher-order NLS (HNLS) equation. We treat real or complex-valued functions, such as and as non-commutative, and employ the Lax pair associated with the evolution equation as in the commutation case. We derive the quasi-Gramian solution of the system by employing a binary Darboux transformation (DT). extcolor[rgb]{0.50,0.00,0.00}{The soliton solutions are presented explicitly within framework of quasideterminants. In order to visually understand the dynamics and solutions in the given example, we also provide simulations illustrating the associated profiles.} Moreover, the solution can be used to study the stability of plane waves and to understand the generation of periodic patterns in the context of modulational instability.
