Abstract:Solid-state batteries (SSBs) with metal fluoride cathodes are an exciting combination due to their high theoretical energy density and good safety. However, owing to the high chemical compatibility requirements between metal fluoride cathode and the solid-state electrolyte (SSE), developing an adaptable SSE film with comprehensive properties is particularly challenging. Herein, a class of ionic liquid (IL) reinforced oxide SSE films was proposed. Among them, the combination of Li 1.5 Al 0.5 Ge 1.5 (PO 4 ) 3 (LAGP) oxide SSE and EMIM-based IL (LAGP-EMIM) exhibits good flame-retardant properties, exceptional air stability, high ionic conductivity and excellent chemical stability. The introduction of ILs can increase the ion transport channels in SSEs and render the usage of dryprocess, well addressing the contradiction between the flexibility and ionic conductivity of oxide films. The thickness of LAGP-EMIM films is 59 mu m and they show the highest ionic conductivity of 1.05 mS cm - 1 among the NaSICON-type oxide -based SSE films till now. In addition, it can be stably matched with the conversion metal fluoride cathodes such as FeF 3 and CuF 2 to construct semi -solid-state batteries, delivering high initial discharge capacity of 820.2 and 539.6 mAh g -1 , respectively. The present work shed new insight into designing the composite electrolytes toward the next -generation solid state conversion batteries.
MOF-based quasi-solid-state electrolyte for long-life Al-Se battery

Abstract:Aluminum-selenium (Al-Se) batteries, which possess a high theoretical specific capacity of 1357 mA h g −1 , represent a promising energy storage technology. However, they suffer from significant attenuation of capacity and low cycle life due to the shuttle effect. To mitigate the shuttle effect induced by soluble selenium chloroaluminate compound that tends to migrate towards the negative electrode, a quasi-solid-state Al-Se battery was fabricated through the synthesis of a multi-aperture structure quasi-solid-state electrolyte (MOF@GPE) based on metal-organic framework (MOF) material and gel-polymer electrolyte (GPE). The high ionic conductivity (1.13×10 −3 S cm −1 ) of MOF@GPE at room temperature, coupled with its wide electrochemical stability window (2.45 V), can facilitate ion transport kinetics and enhance the electrochemical performance of Al-Se batteries. The MOF@GPE-based quasi-solid-state Al-Se batteries exhibit outstanding long-life cycling stability, delivering a high specific discharge capacity of 548 mA h g −1 with a maintained discharge specific capacity of 345 mA h g −1 after 500 cycles at a current density of 200 mA g −1 . The stable ion transmission and high ion transport kinetics in MOF@GPE can be attributed to the stable structure and permeable channel of MOF, which effectively captures the soluble selenium chloroaluminate compound and further restrains the shuttle effect, resulting in improved cycling performance.

Abstract:Layered chalcogenides play significant roles in electrochemical energy storage. However, their application potential is restricted by sluggish charge transfer and storage kinetics. Herein, a dual-defect strategy involving Ti intercalation and Se vacancies (SVs) is proposed to modulate the electronic structure of MoSe2 and enhance the electrochemical performance of aluminum batteries (ABs). The dense atomic orbitals of Ti and Mo in Ti-MoSe2-x contribute numerous electron states near the Fermi level, effectively filling the wide bandgap. This fundamentally activates the intrinsic electronic properties, elevating the charge-transfer ability. Moreover, the synchronous optimization of planar and interlayer structures endows the Ti-MoSe2-x with ample active sites and expanded layer spacing, enhancing ion migration and electrochemical capacity. The significant charge interaction between Ti-MoSe2-x and active electrolyte ions promotes the affinity and storage ability of cathodes for charge carriers. Owing to these merits, the Ti-MoSe2-x cathode exhibits enhanced reversible capacity (250 mA h g-1 at 0.5 A g-1) and superior cycling stability (132 mA h g-1 over 2400 cycles at 5.0 A g-1) with fast reaction kinetics. This research offers in-depth insights into the electrochemical energy storage for ABs by modulating the electronic and lattice structures of layered chalcogenides. Dual-defect strategy of Ti-intercalation and Se-vacancies modulates the electronic and structural properties of MoSe2, achieving high-performance aluminum batteries.
Solid Polymer Electrolytes with Enhanced Electrochemical Stability for High‐Capacity Aluminum Batteries

Abstract:This work develops an ionic liquid‐based solid polymer electrolyte with an inorganic additive for aluminum–graphite batteries, showing improved electrochemical stability over conventional ionic liquid electrolytes to enable ≈30% higher specific capacities. The origins of the improved performance are elucidated via variable‐rate cyclic voltammetry and solid‐state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, revealing insights into the electrolyte formation process and changes to the electrolyte ion speciation. Chloroaluminate ionic liquids are commonly used electrolytes in rechargeable aluminum batteries due to their ability to reversibly electrodeposit aluminum at room temperature. Progress in aluminum batteries is currently hindered by the limited electrochemical stability, corrosivity, and moisture sensitivity of these ionic liquids. Here, a solid polymer electrolyte based on 1‐ethyl‐3‐methylimidazolium chloride‐aluminum chloride, polyethylene oxide, and fumed silica is developed, exhibiting increased electrochemical stability over the ionic liquid while maintaining a high ionic conductivity of ≈13 mS cm−1. In aluminum–graphite cells, the solid polymer electrolytes enable charging to 2.8 V, achieving a maximum specific capacity of 194 mA h g−1 at 66 mA g−1. Long‐term cycling at 2.7 V showed a reversible capacity of 123 mA h g−1 at 360 mA g−1 and 98.4% coulombic efficiency after 1000 cycles. Solid‐state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy measurements reveal the formation of five‐coordinate aluminum species that crosslink the polymer network to enable a high ionic liquid loading in the solid electrolyte. This study provides new insights into the molecular‐level design and understanding of polymer electrolytes for high‐capacity aluminum batteries with extended potential limits.

Abstract:To build high‐capacity, long‐life all‐solid‐state lithium–selenium batteries, lithium iodide (LiI) is introduced into the cathode as an active additive. LiI actively enhances interfacial Li+ transport and provides rich catalytic sites for the selenium composite cathode while partially acting as a redox‐active component in the cathode, thereby accelerating solid‐state reaction kinetics while improving capacity for the all‐solid‐state lithium–selenium battery. Selenium (Se) shows promise as a cathode candidate for all‐solid‐state lithium (Li) batteries due to its impressive theoretical volumetric energy density, much higher electronic conductivity, and improved safety in comparison to those for sulfur (S). An active cathode additive, lithium iodide (LiI) is demonstrated, to address the major challenge for all‐solid‐state Li–Se batteries, namely the sluggish redox kinetics resulting from the huge solid‐state conversion barrier. The LiI additive enhances Li+ transport and provides catalytic sites for Se cathode, thus endowing the batteries with accelerated reaction kinetics and extra capacity. DFT calculation and experimental analysis clearly reveal that LiI additive efficiently accelerates the conversion between polyselenide intermediates and Li2Se. With the above advantages, the battery with LiI using Li6PS5Br electrolyte gives an outstanding capacity of 862 mAh gSe−1 beyond the theoretical specific capacity of Se and a superlong life over 1800 cycles at 1C under room temperature. This work offers a simple strategy to facilitate the kinetics of all‐solid‐state Se cathodes and paves the way for the practicality of high‐capacity and long‐life all‐solid‐state Li–Se batteries.

Abstract:Applications of lithium batteries are challenged by their unsatisfactory safety profiles. Solid-state batteries present a very promising solution to overcome the safety issues, but their performance requires major improvement. Hybrid quasi-solid electrolyte (HQSE), comprising solid and liquid components, has emerged as a practical compromise for safer and high-performance Li batteries. Li–S system is one of the most promising Li battery candidates; however, the performance of Li–S hybrid quasi-solid battery still needs to be further enhanced. Herein, a new HQSE design comprising Li7La3Zr2O12 sheet-based solid framework imbibed with liquid electrolyte is applied to Li–S battery. The liquid-infused 3D architecture allows fast Li ion mobility and low interfacial resistance. It is also compatible with Li metal, highly processable, unleakable, and thermally stable. These attributes result in a high-performance Li–S hybrid quasi-solid system with a very good safety profile. The novel HQSE design also demonstrates improved anodic stability, which is very promising for high-voltage cathodes. The excellent performance, enhanced safety, and broad applicability of our sheet-based LLZO HQSE set the path for applications in other types of Li batteries to achieve both safe and high-performance energy storage systems.

Molecular Reactivity and Interface Stability Modification in In‐Situ Gel Electrolyte for High Performance Quasi‐Solid‐State Lithium Metal Batteries

Abstract:Quasi‐solid‐state lithium metal battery is a promising candidate for next generation high energy density and high safety power supply. Despite intensive efforts on electrolytes, uncontrolled interfacial reactions on lithium with electrolyte and patchy interfacial contacts still hinder its practical process. Herein, we bring in rationally designed F contained groups into polymer skeleton via in‐situ gelation for the first time to establish quasi‐solid‐state battery. This method achieves a capacity retention of 90% after 1000 cycles at 0.5C with LiFePO4 cathodes. The interface constructed by polymer skeleton and reaction with –CF3 lead to the predicted solid electrolyte interface species with high stability. Furthermore, we optimize molecular reactivity and interface stability with regulating F contained end groups in the polymer. Comparisons on different structures reveal that high performance solid stable lithium metal batteries rely on chemical modification as well as stable polymer skeleton, which is more critical to construct robust and steady SEI with uniform lithium deposition. New approach with functional groups regulation proposes a more stable cycling process with a capacity retention of 94.2% at 0.5C and 87.6% at 1C after 1000 cycles with LiFePO4 cathodes, providing new insights for the practical development of quasi‐solid‐state lithium metal battery. New approach with F contained functional groups regulation in in‐situ gel electrolyte proposes superb stability towards lithium metal anode and exhibits admirable cycling performance in quasi‐solid‐state lithium metal battery.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have become candidate for the next-generation energy storage systems because of their high energy density and specific capacity. However, due to the shuttle effect of polysulfides and the safety problems caused by liquid organic electrolytes, practical commercial applications of Li-S battery have been severely limited. With the recent development of solid electrolyte, the strategy of replacing liquid electrolyte with the solid electrolyte has aroused extensive attention, which can both improve the safety of the battery and increase its energy density. However, in the absence of liquid components, poor interfacial contact and low ionic conductivity for solid electrolyte can seriously impair the electrochemical performance of solid-state Li-S batteries. By adding a certain amount of liquid plasticizer, the ionic conductivity is effectively ameliorated and the interface contact between the electrodes and the electrolyte is largely improved. Herein, a thermally polymerized composite gel polymer electrolyte (CPE) for quasi-solid-state Li-S battery is designed and fabricated. The CPE has a satisfactory ionic conductivity and wide electrochemical window of above 4.5 V. Especially, the addition of the garnet Li6.5La3Zr1.5Ta0.5O12 (LLZTO) powder improves the flame retardancy and thermal stability. In addition, the application of CPE in the Li-S battery can block the shuttle of polysulfide to some extent, and the quasi-solid-state Li-S battery assembled by CPE shows the good electrochemical performance and only a 0.22% decay per cycle in 200 cycles with 0.1C. Hence, this work provides a new strategy for design and development of the quasi-solid-state electrolyte for the application of Li-S battery. Moreover, due to its wide electrochemical window, CPE can also be applied in high-voltage cathode systems of lithium ion battery in the future.

Abstract:Polymer-based quasi-solid-state electrolyte (QSE) is an effective means to solve the safety problem of lithium (Li) metal batteries, and stable solid-electrolyte-interface (SEI) layers between electrolyte and anode/cathode are highly required for their long-term stability. Herein, it is demonstrated that a silicon-doped polyether functions as a multifunctional unit, which can induce the formation of stable and robust SEI layers with rich Lix SiOy on both the surfaces of cathode and anode. It simultaneously solves the compatibility of electrolyte and electrodes in the quasi-solid-state Li-metal battery. Moreover, the robust polymer skeleton with a cross-linked network is beneficial to inhibit liquid volatilization and improve battery safety. The assembled Li|QSE|LiFePO4 batteries show a capacity retention rate as high as 97.5% after 400 cycles at 1 C (30 °C), and reach 78.1% after 1000 cycles. Furthermore, there is almost no attenuation of reversible capacity after 100 cycles for the assembled Li|QSE|LiNi0.8 Mn0.1 Co0.1 O2 batteries. The concept of silicon-doped polymer with a crosslinking structure provides an important strategy for designing solid-state or quasi-solid-state polymer electrolytes for the stable long-term operation of both anode and cathode.

Abstract:Selenium (Se) has great promise to serve as cathode material for rechargeable batteries because of its good conductivity and high theoretical volumetric energy density comparable to sulfur. Herein, we report the preparation of mesoporous nitrogen-doped carbon scaffolds (NCSs) to restrain selenium for advanced lithium-selenium (Li-Se) batteries. The NCSs synthesized by a bottom-up solution-phase method have graphene-like laminar structure and well-distributed mesopores. The unique architecture of NCSs can severe as conductive framework for encapsulating selenium and polyselenides, and provide sufficient pathways to facilitate ion transport. Furthermore, the laminar and porous NCSs can effectively buffer the volume variation during charge/discharge processes. The integrated composite of Se-NCSs has a high Se content and can ensure the complete electrochemical reactions of Se and Li species. When used for Li-Se batteries, the cathodes based on Se-NCSs exhibit high capacity, remarkable cyclability, and excellent rate performance.
Reduced liquid content in in-situ polymerized quasi-solid-state sodium batteries enabled by robust electrode–electrolyte interface

Abstract:Quasi-solid-state batteries (QSSBs) are an intermediate development step from liquid batteries toward all-solid-state batteries, and the diminish of liquid content in QSSBs is of practical significance. However, in sodium batteries with a metallic Na anode, large interfacial resistance is a bottleneck restricting rate capability and further decrease of liquid content in QSSBs. In this work, we demonstrate the construction of a robust anode–electrolyte interface with facilitated charge transfer process and enhanced chemical stability for in-situ polymerized QSSBs, realized by a 3D Na/Na-Sn composite anode. The Na-Sn alloys uniformly distributed in Na matrix not only possess lower Na + diffusion barrier intrinsically, but also contribute to a stereo surface with increased electrochemical surface area, which is beneficial to accommodating volume variations during sodiation/desodiation. Importantly, the in-situ polymerization process is highly compatible with the 3D composite anode without sacrificing of interfacial geometric contact. As a result, in QSSBs with a Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 cathode, by replacing metallic Na anode with the Na/Na-Sn composite anode, liquid content in quasi-solid-state electrolyte can be appropriately reduced (e.g., from 70% to 50%) while maintaining similar level of electrochemical performance, i.e. high discharge specific capacity (109.5 mAh g −1 at 0.5 C ) and good cyclic stability (96.5% capacity retention after 650 cycles), showing high practical significance.

Abstract:Due to the unique electronic structure of Al3+ with strong Coulombic interaction and complex bonding situation (simultaneously covalent/ionic bonds), traditional electrodes, mismatching with the bonding orbital of Al3+, usually exhibit slow kinetic process with inferior rechargeable aluminum batteries (RABs) performance. Herein, to break the confinement of the interaction mismatch between Al3+ and electrode, we potentially develop a previously unexplored Se2.9S5.1‐based cathode with sufficient valence electronic energy overlap with Al3+ and easily accessible structure. Through this new strategy, Se2.9S5.1 encapsulated in multichannel carbon nanofibers with free‐standing structure exhibits a high capacity of 606 mAh g−1 at 50 mA g−1, fast kinetics (211 mAh g−1 at 2.0 A g−1), robust stability (187 mAh g−1 at 0.5 A g−1 after 3,000 cycles), and enhanced flexibility. Abstract:Lithium-sulfur batteries are promising candidates of energy storage devices. Both adjusting salt/solvent ratio and applying quasi-solid-state electrolytes are regarded as effective strategies to improve the lithium (Li) anode performance. However, reaction mechanisms and interfacial properties in quasi-solid-state lithium-sulfur (QSSLS) batteries with high salt concentration are not clear. Here we utilize in-situ characterizations and molecular dynamics simulations to unravel aforesaid mysteries, and construct relationships of electrolyte structure, interfacial behaviour and performance. The generation mechanism, formation process, and mechanical/chemical/electrochemical properties of the anion-derived solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) are deeply explored. Li deposition uniformity and dissolution reversibility are further tuned by the sustainable SEI. These straightforward evidences and deepgoing studies would guide the electrolyte design and interfacial engineering of QSSLS batteries.
In−situ confining selenium within bubble−like carbon nanoshells for ultra−stable Li−Se batteries

Abstract:Lithium‐selenium (Li‐Se) batteries are promising energy storage devices. However, the long‐term durability and high‐rate performance of the Se cathode have been limited by significant volume expansion and the troublesome shuttle effect of polyselenides during repeated charging/discharging processes. To revolutionize these issues, we applied a top‐down strategy through the in‐situ trapping of amorphous Se within bubble‐like carbon (BLC) frameworks, which can radically minimize the presence of surface‐absorbed Se while enhancing Se loading capacity. This ingenious technique successfully encapsulates all Se species within carbon nanoshells, creating a distinct half‐filled core‐shell structure known as Se@void@BLC. This in‐situ trapping approach ensures the efficient management of Se volume changes during repeated discharge and charge cycles. Moreover, an extraordinary Se loading capacity of up to 65.6wt% is reached. Using the Se@void@BLC as cathode for Li−Se battery, we achieve a high initial Columbic efficiency of 84.2%, a high reversible capacity of 585 mAh g−1, and an ultralow capacity decay of only 0.0037 % per cycle during 4000 cycles at 10 A g−1.

Metal‐Organic Framework Confined Solvent Ionic Liquid Enables Long Cycling Life Quasi‐Solid‐State Lithium Battery in Wide Temperature Range

Abstract:A quasi‐solid‐state electrolyte based on a solvate ionic liquid space‐restricted in UIO‐66 exhibits excellent interfacial nano‐wettability, fast Li‐ion mobility, high ionic conductivity, and good compatibility with electrodes. As a result, the SIL/UIO‐66 material for quasi‐solid‐state batteries demonstrates excellent rate capability and cycle stability in a wide temperature range of 25–90 °C. Solid‐state Li batteries are receiving increasing attention as a prospective energy storage system due to the high energy density and improved safety. However, the high interfacial resistance between solid‐state electrolyte and electrode results in sluggish Li+ transport kinetics. To tackle the interfacial problem and prolong the cycle life of solid‐state Li batteries, a quasi‐solid‐state electrolyte (QSSE) based on a solvate ionic liquid (SIL) space‐restricted in nanocages of UIO‐66 (SIL/UIO‐66) is prepared in this study. Benefiting from the effective spatial confinement of the TFSI− by the pore UIO‐66 and the strong chemical interactions between the SIL and metal atoms, SIL/UIO‐66 QSSE exhibits high ionic conductivity and good compatibility with electrodes. As a result, Li|QSSE|LFP cells demonstrate excellent rate capability and cycle stability in a wide temperature range of 25–90 °C. This study provides a realistic strategy for the fabrication of safe solid electrolytes with excellent compatibility and long cycle life for high‐performance QSSE Li‐ion batteries.

Rational Design of an In-Build Quasi-Solid-state Electrolyte for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries with the Silicon-Based Anode

Abstract:Design and optimization of the electrolyte are essential for improving electrochemical performances of high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with silicon-based anodes. However, the dramatic volume change of silicon and the repeated destruction of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film bring formidable challenges for electrolyte exploitation. Herein, a quasi-solid-state electrolyte is proposed via in situ polymerization with 1,3,5-trioxane (TXE) as the monomer, lithium bistrifluoromethanesulfonimide (LiTFSI) and lithium difluoro(oxalato) borate (LiDFOB) as lithium salts, which delivers excellent ionic conductivity and sufficient anion transference number. By half-cell evaluation with the quasi-solid-state electrolyte, the in situ generated polymer skeleton and modified SEI film effectively suppressed the volume expansion of silicon-graphite (Si-Gr) anode to 26.7% after 300 cycles, significantly lower than 60.7% for conventional liquid electrolytes. Furthermore, the LiNi0.6-Co0.2Mn0.2O2||Si-Gr full-cell test demonstrates that the quasi-solid-state electrolyte can also protect the cathode structure and inhibit the dissolution and shuttling of transition metals. Ultimately, capacity retention of the full cell is up to 86.0% after 200 cycles with high average coulombic efficiency (99.79%) at 25 degrees C, and the electrolyte further enhances its cycling stability at high temperature (60 degrees C). This work proposes a straightforward strategy for the comprehensive enhancement of battery safety and electrochemical performance with Si-based anodes.

Abstract:Selenium, an element belonging to the same group in the periodic table as sulfur, has a high electronic conductivity (1 × 10−5 S/cm) and a high volumetric energy density (3253 mAh/cm3), which is a prospective cathode material for high-energy all-solid-state rechargeable batteries. However, its wide use is hindered by large volume expansion and low utilization rate. In this work, Se-infused nitrogen-doped hierarchical meso-microporous carbon composites (Se/NHPC) are prepared by a melt-diffusion process. Amorphous Se is uniformly dispersed in meso-micropores of NHPC with a high mass loading of 81%. All-solid-state Li-Se batteries fabricated by using Se/NHPC as the cathode, a Li-In alloy as the anode, and Li6PS5Cl as the solid-state electrolyte, deliver a highly reversible capacity of 621 mAh/g (92% of theoretical capacity), a good rate capability and a high capacity retention value of 80.9% after 100 cycles. It is found that the capacity decay of Se cathode is mainly related to the interfacial degradation and the separation of Se from the carbon substrate, as suggested by the continuous increase of interfacial resistance and the structural transformation from amorphous Sen chains to Se8 rings initial discharge/charge cycle and then to the trigonally crystalline Se chains structure after the long-term cycles.

Janus Electrolyte with Modified Li+ Solvation for High‐Performance Solid‐State Lithium Batteries

Abstract:A Janus quasi‐solid electrolyte with modified Li+ solvation environment is developed. The unique design of Janus host assisted with the as‐formed aggregated ionic pairs contributes to a high‐performance solid electrolyte with superior safety, which greatly promotes the practical applications of solid‐state lithium batteries. Solid‐state lithium‐metal batteries attract great attention due to their high energy density and superior safety. However, the sluggish Li+ kinetics of solid electrolyte and poor interface compatibility between electrolyte and lithium anode lead to unsatisfied performance at room temperature, which severely limit their practical application. Herein, a Janus quasi‐solid electrolyte (JSE) design is reported, which modifies the Li+ solvation environment in succinonitrile (SN) plastic crystal electrolyte and creates 1D Li+ transportation channels. Density functional theory calculations and Raman results reveal that Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)3 changes the Li+ solvation environment from SN units to aggregated ion pairs, which accelerates the diffusion rate of Li+. As a result, JSE presents excellent ionic conductivity (0.73 mS cm−1) and high lithium transference number (0.72). With this efficient JSE, Li symmetric cells deliver excellent cycle stability over 600 h with a low over potential of 60 mV. LiFePO4|JSE|Li solid‐state battery delivers an impressive performance with a specific discharge capacity of 152 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles at room temperature under 0.5 C. Moreover, the corresponding pouch cell also shows outstanding performance (140 mAh g−1 under 0.5 C) and withstands abuse tests such as bending and cutting, demonstrating its superior safety for future utilization.

Abstract:Despite boasting giant leaps in performance improvement over the years, the current commercial standard, Li-ion batteries, are fast approaching their theoretical limits. Meanwhile, Lithium-Sulfur (Li-S) batteries offering ultra-high theoretical energy density (~2600 Whkg -1 ), cost-effectiveness, and nontoxicity are being seen as promising alternatives. Despite their plentiful advantages, the practicality of Li-S batteries has been largely stymied by several challenges: a) deleterious polysulfide dissolution and ‘shuttle effect’, b) significant volume change of S cathodes during cycling, c) safety concerns with flammable traditional glyme-based electrolyte, and d) the instability of Li anode. To mitigate these challenges, researchers have explored all-solid-state electrolytes, but their poor Li-ion conductivity, high interfacial impedance, and need for expensive, exotic materials and complex fabrication procedures severely limit their practical application. To overcome these challenges, we propose an in-situ gelled polymer-ceramic hybrid silsesquioxane-based electrolyte system. The gelled matrix, thermally crosslinked post cell fabrication, immobilizes the glyme-based liquid electrolyte and exhibits high liquid-like ionic conductivities (1.03 mS.cm -1 ), low interfacial impedance, and high oxidative potential (>4.5V vs. Li/Li + ) . In this study, in addition to vastly decreased flammability, we report superior Li-ion conductivity compared to state-of-art solid-state Li-S electrolytes. This high ionic conductivity translated to a significantly improved specific capacity of 1050 mAh.gS -1 at 0.2 C, elevated Coulombic efficiencies (>98.5%), and elevated rate kinetics. The gelled electrolytes exhibited stable cycling in a large temperature range (-10 o C - 60 o C). Moreover, polysulfide permeation studies and subsequent DFT calculations revealed that the gelled electrolyte exhibited strong chemical absorptivity to lithium polysulfides due to the polar silsesquioxane core, which translated to superior capacity retention (>80% over 200 cycles). Further, post- mortem XPS characterization studies revealed the formation of stable SEI at the anode and cathode, and SEM of cycled anodes showed reduced dendritic formations. Finally, the electrolyte was tested in practical pouch cell architecture, and the cells demonstrated excellent reliability even under mechanical stress. This work successfully reports a robust, rationally designed gelled electrolyte system for developing safe and high-performance quasi-solid state Li-S batteries.
