Abstract:This paper presents a tracking technique for performing sequential geoacoustic inversion monitoring range-independent environmental parameters in shallow water. The inverse problem is formulated in a state-space model with a state equation for the time-evolving sound speed profile (SSP) and a measurement equation that incorporates acoustic measurements via a hydrophone array. The particle filter (PF) is an ideal algorithm to perform tracking of environmental parameters for nonlinear systems with non-Gaussian probability densities. However, it has the problem of the mismatch between the proposal distribution and the a posterior probability distribution (PPD). The ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) can obtain the PPD based on the Bayes theorem. A tracking algorithm improves the performance of the PF by employing the PPD of the EnKF as the proposal distribution of the PF. Tracking capabilities of this filter, the EnKF and the PF are compared with synthetic acoustic pressure data and experimental SSP data. Simulation results show the proposed method enables the continuous tracking of the range-independent SSP and outperforms the PF and the EnKF. Moreover, the complexity analysis is performed, and the computational complexity of the proposed method is greatly increased because of the combination of the PF and the EnKF. Measurement of the Echo Reduction for Passive Materials Based on Inverse Filtering Technique

Abstract:A method of measuring the echo reduction of passive materials based on inverse filtering technique is presented. In this method, a received signal which contains circuit channel and underwater acoustic channel information is obtained by transmitting the initial pilot signal and receiving signals through the hydrophone. With inverse filtering technique, the channel transfer function between the transducer array and hydrophone can be calculated. Then, the inverse function of the transfer function can be obtained by a robust inversion method. By retransmitting the inverse function, the spatial and temporal pulse focus at the position of the hydrophone is achieved. Simulation examples of the inverse filtering show its high performance at the pulse compression and reverberation suppression. A steel plate sample with the size of 1.2m×1.6m×0.028m is tested in a wave guide tank. The method is demonstrated by the comparison of the theoretical and the experimental results in the measured frequency ranges from 1 to 5 kHz.

Abstract:The measurement of acoustic properties for passive-material samples is strongly interfered by reverberations in a limited space. A multichannel inverse filter (MIF) can achieve spatio-temporal focusing by retransmitting the optimal signal estimated from multichannel impulse responses of the transmitter channel and the underwater acoustic channel. To decrease the influence of reverberations on measurements and improve the measurement precision, a MIF is employed to measure the echo reduction and insertion loss, respectively. The method is demonstrated by simulations and experiments, which were performed in a cylindrical tank to measure the two acoustic parameters for a steel plate sample. A Method for Estimating the Distance of Near-Ocean-Bottom Sources by Combining VLF Underwater Acoustic Field and Scholte Wave Field

Abstract:In order to solve the problems of passive detection of very-low-frequency (VLF) underwater sound sources, this paper proposes a method of estimating sound source distance based on combining underwater sound field and Scholte wave field. VLF sources near the ocean bottom generate the sound field in the water, then seismic waves are excited by the of near-field effect. The surface wave propagating along the ocean bottom interface is the Scholte wave. By deploying a hydroacoustic&seismic-wave joint detection system on the ocean bottom, the acoustic field and the Scholte wave field excited by the source can be collected. Due to the different physical properties of water acoustics and Scholte waves, the Scholte waves can be distinguished by analysing the polarization characteristics of the captured signals. Due to the different velocity between the underwater acoustics and Scholte waves, the propagation delays to the joint detection system are also different, and the delay difference can be obtained by the correlation method. Combined with the surrounding parameters, the distance of the target source can be determined. Theoretical analysis and finite element simulation experiments show that this method can estimate the position information of near-ocean-bottom VLF underwater sources in the ideal case.

Abstract:In the shallow water environment,the propagation features of the acoustic channel and its variability are important for many littorial applications,such as long-range underwater target detection and communication.In order to measure the low frequency(LF) channel characteristics,a towed plasma sound source(PSS) and a vetical received array were used in our shallow water acoustic experiment,performed in Sept.7,2008.Through the comparision of the measured data with the wideband channel simulation model outputs,based on the KRAKEN Program,we analysised the PSS and channel features,including the source's waveforms,directivities,energe transform efficiency and the channel multipath structure.Experiment results show that the numerial analysis is well comformed of the measurements and the used PSS system is suitable for the continuously mobile underwater channel measurements task,due to its good stability of sourse level,towed posture and consistency of pulse waveforms.

Abstract:The results of theoretical analysis and practical implementation of seismoacoustic methods developed for monitoring ice-covered regions in the Arctic are presented and discussed. Special attention is paid to passive seismoacoustic tomography as a unique method of studying the deep structure of the lithosphere and hydrosphere without the use of powerful sources. One of the distinctive features of the considered approach is the use of receivers located on the ice surface to recover characteristics of Arctic-type seismoacoustic waveguide "lithosphere-hydrosphere-ice cover". In passive monitoring, special attention is paid to reducing the noise signal accumulation time required to obtain seismoacoustic wave propagation times, as well as expanding the analyzed frequency bandwidth. The presented results can be used to develop technologies for seasonal and long-term monitoring of the currently observed variability of large areas of the Arctic region due to climatic changes.

Passive Acoustic Inversion with Virtual Head Waves

Abstract:A passive acoustic inversion method with virtual head waves extracted from ocean surface noise is presented. The noise is assumed to be coming from the sea-surface due to wind and waves and a vertical array is used to produce beamformed time-series. Cross-correlating a beam steered downward with one steered upward at the same angle produces virtual head waves with periodic peaks in the time-series but only for the beams steered at the seabed critical angle. The virtual head wave has the same phase speed as the real head wave, but travel time is offset, thus virtual. It has been attributed to the cross-correlation between head waves and head waves or head waves and perfect reflections. With two of the virtual head wave travel times and the critical angle, an inverse method is developed to extract the water depth, water column and seabed sound speeds as well as the array depth. The theory is developed for the expected travel times and this provides the basis for the inversion methodology. Both the theoretical framework and the inversion method will be presented along with illustrating examples.

Abstract:The goal of the work presented here is to study a novel approach for inverting acoustic signals recorded in the marine environment for the estimation of environmental parameters of the water column and/or the seabed. The proposed approach is based on signal feature extraction using a discrete wavelet packet transform, applied to the measured signal, and hidden Markov models that exploit the sequential patterns of the signals. The signal feature is thereafter used in the framework of a mixture density network, which, after training with sets of simulated signals calculated within a predefined search space, provides conditional posterior distributions of the recoverable parameters. The technique is tested with two test cases corresponding to different types of inverse problems. The first case corresponds to a simple problem of geoacoustic inversion, while the second is referred to a, rather unusual, still interesting problem of recovering the shape of a seamount using long‐range acoustic data. Both test cases are based on simulated experiments. The inversion results obtained using the proposed scheme are compared with inversion results using statistical features of the acoustic signal, which is another inversion approach well documented in the literature and is also based on the wavelet packet transform of the measured signal.

Abstract:Remote sensing of seeps, the release of gas (mainly methane) from the seabed, is an urgent problem. The importance of detecting seeps in the Arctic shelf zone is constantly increasing due to degradation of underwater permafrost and the release of gas hydrates. Gas bubbles scatter underwater sound and their corresponding resonance frequencies are in the kilohertz range for seeps observed in nature. A promising method for detecting and studying seeps is probing with underwater sound near the denoted resonance frequency. This corresponds to a decrease in the operating frequency with respect to the traditional method of studying high-frequency sonars, so the proposed method will be classified as low-frequency in this study. This method expands the study area due to the low sound attenuation in water and the high scattering level near bubble resonances. The scattering strength was estimated taking into account collective interaction (group effects) of bubbles. The possibility of using low-frequency hydroacoustic systems to detect seeps is demonstrated using the results of a full-scale experiment using a simulated bubble jet as an example. A data processing method for detecting nonstationary scatterers is proposed.

Abstract:The self-contained vertical acoustic–hydrophysical measuring systems Mollyusk-19 and Mollyusk-21 were developed to study spatiotemporal inhomogeneities in the sound field velocity and in modal structures of low-frequency sound fields and internal waves. This paper describes the circuit, structural, and software solutions for the main problem posed when developing new systems to improve their performance characteristics. The possibilities of applying these systems to solve the formulated problems was illustrated by the results of field measurements on the Posiet Bay shelf in the Sea of Japan.

Abstract:The main goal of this paper is to estimate the regional acoustic and geoacoustic shallow-water environment from data collected by a vertical hydrophone array and transmitted by distant time-harmonic point sources. The aim is to estimate the statistical properties of the random fluctuations of the index of refraction in the water column and the characteristics of the sea bottom. It is explained from first principles how acoustic wave propagation can be expressed as Markovian dynamics for the complex mode amplitudes of the sound pressure. This makes it possible to express the cross moments of the sound pressure in terms of the parameters to be estimated. Then it is shown how the estimation problem can be formulated as a nonlinear inverse problem using this formulation, which can be solved by minimization of a misfit function. The method is applied to experimental data collected by the Acoustic Laboratory for Marine Applications system. A Bayesian analysis quantifies the uncertainty of the estimation.

Abstract:Low frequency acoustic methods are a common tool for seabed stratigraphy mapping. Due to the efficiency in seabed mapping compared to geotechnical methods, estimating geotechnical sediment properties from acoustic surveying is attractive for many applications. In this study, co-located geotechnical and geoacoustic measurements of different seabed sediment types in shallow water environments (<5 m of water depth) are analyzed. Acoustic impedance estimated from sediment properties based on laboratory testing of physical samples is compared to acoustic impedance deduced from CHIRP sonar measurements using an inversion approach. Portable free fall penetrometer measurements provided in situ sediment strength. The results show that acoustic impedance values deduced from acoustic data through inversion fall within a range of ±25% of acoustic impedance estimated from porosity and bulk density. The acoustic measurements reflect variations in shallow sediment properties such as porosity and bulk density (~10 cm below seabed surface), even for very soft sediments (su < 3 kPa) and loose sands (~20% relative density). This is a step towards validating the ability of acoustic methods to capture geotechnical properties in the topmost seabed layers.

Abstract:—The capabilities of a combination of passive seismic methods to study the geological structure of the upper part of the Earth's crust compared to active methods are analyzed using case examples. The passive methods include microseismic sounding, Nakamura's horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio method (HVSR), seismic interferometry, and, for anthropogenic sites, ambient vibration testing using industrial signals. Three examples are considered: a zone of a platform tectonic earthquake, a kimberlite pipe, and a hydroelectric dam with foundation site. The results of the passive and active seismic methods agree well. Passive methods give more diffuse horizontal boundaries but clearly identify near-vertical heterogeneities. Combining passive methods is effective for reconnaissance studies and in the remote regions that are difficult to access by active observation techniques. Combination of passive methods enables simultaneous processing of seismic records obtained through different passive methods, with a minimum of two sensors required.

Abstract:A solution to the problem of acoustic source depth estimation in shallow water is presented for the case of two horizontally separated hydrophones or arrays. The solution is based on that the smooth-averaged cross-correlation function (SCF) of signals changes regularly with the source depth and is approximately independent of the source range, allowing that the source depth can be estimated independently without knowing the source range. Using different cost functions, three methods are proposed to estimate source depth by matching the normalized cross-spectral density, temporal envelope and time delay of the SCF. Then, the performance of the proposed methods are evaluated with simulations and two experiments conducted off the coast of China at water depths not exceeding 100 m. The mean absolute errors in source depth of the proposed methods are in 2.8–12.8 m. Finally, the effect of noise, frequency band, range span, horizontal spacing, sound speed profile, and parameter mismatch are numerically studied. The results show that the methods are more suitable for the case of a low-frequency band and an environment with large negative sound speed gradient.

Abstract:The advancement of seismic methods is vital for mineral exploration in the ongoing energy transition. In this study, we investigate the application of ambient noise seismic interferometry and surface-wave analysis to characterize the subsurface in a mineral exploration context. We then confirm the results of the passive seismic investigation through an active source experiment. We collected ambient noise data using a 2-D seismic line initially deployed for an active source reflection seismic study. By cross-correlating the signals, we retrieved the surface waves and constructed a 2-D shear-wave velocity profile using conventional surface-wave analysis. We utilized the active source data to establish initial assumptions about the surveyed medium and then validated the passive seismic experiment. The passive seismic results are concordant with the active source results and allow for the interpretation of geological contacts and fault zones. Our work demonstrates the potential of passive seismic methods for investigating local tectonic settings and their role in hardrock mineral exploration.

Seismic Interferometry With Very Short Ambient Seismic Noise Recording

Abstract:There are potentialities for passive seismic interferometry to be conducted not only in investigating regional geological structure, but also in investigating shallow geology with high-frequency (> 1Hz) ambient seismic noise. Time length of recorded seismic signals in near-surface exploration is much shorter than solid earth geophysics and could be only several hours to a few days. As a result, many questions need be solved in applying seismic interferometry to shallow geological investigation. Two questions are discussed in this paper: how to choose an appropriate cutting window length and why the results of cross-coherence are of higher quality than that of cross-correlation. We used a small data set to determine an appropriate time-window length which results in a relatively high signal-to-noise ratio of cross-correlation. We also applied the Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves to extract phase velocity from a pseudo shot gather which was obtained by cross-coherence method.

Abstract:This paper presents a method for passive broadband source localization using asynchronous vertically distributed hydrophones in a deep-water reliable acoustic path (RAP) environment. The proposed method utilizes the invariance of the striation frequency ratio with respect to the source depth to decouple range and depth estimation. First, the received spectra are resampled according to the striation frequency ratio and matched in pairs to estimate the source range. Then, based on the estimated source range, the source depth is estimated by using a modified Fourier transform. The proposed method outperforms the existing matching algorithm in terms of localization reliability when only a few hydrophones are available. The method also exhibits faster computation speed since it involves only one-dimensional grid scanning. Finally, experimental results in the western Pacific demonstrate that this method can effectively locate a submerged source at a depth of approximately 70 m.

Abstract:Passive surface-wave utilization has been intensively studied as a means of compensating for the shortage of low-frequency information in active surface-wave measurement. In general, passive surface-wave methods cannot provide phase velocities up to several tens of hertz; thus, active surface-wave methods are often required in order to increase the frequency range. To reduce the amount of field work, we propose a strategy for a high-frequency passive surface-wave survey that imposes active sources during continuous passive surface-wave observation; we call our strategy "mixed-source surface-wave (MSW) measurement." Short-duration (within 10 min) passive surface waves and mixed-source surface waves were recorded at three sites with different noise levels: namely, inside a school, along a road, and along a railway. Spectral analysis indicates that the high-frequency energy is improved by imposing active sources during continuous passive surface-wave observation. The spatial autocorrelation (SPAC) method and the multichannel analysis of passive surface waves (MAPS) method based on cross-correlations were performed on the recorded time sequences. The results demonstrate the flexibility and applicability of the proposed method for high-frequency phase velocity analysis. We suggest that it will be constructive to perform MSW measurement in a seismic investigation, rather than exclusively performing either active surface-wave measurement or passive surface-wave measurement. Navigation in shallow water using passive acoustic ranging

Abstract:Passive acoustics can provide a variety of capabilities with applications in oceanographic research and maritime situational awareness. In this paper, we develop a method for the navigation of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) in shallow water. Our approach relies on passively recorded signals from acoustic sources of opportunities (SOOs). By making use of the waveguide invariant, a measurement of the range to the SOO is extracted from the spectrogram of a single hydrophone. Range extraction requires knowledge of the range rate, i.e., the radial velocity between the SOO and AUV, computed from the pressure fields at different time intervals. A particle-based navigation filter fuses the range measurements with the AUV's internal velocity and heading measurements. As a result, the position error, which would otherwise increase over time, can be bounded. The ability to compute the range rate and range measurements from the pressure field measured using a single hydrophone is demonstrated on real data from the SWellEx-96 experiment. The capability of the developed navigation filter is shown based on synthetic data generated by the normal mode program KRAKEN.
