Abstract:An efficient, ecofriendly, amide-functionalized cellulose-based porous adsorbent was synthesized by a cross-linking reaction between cellulose filament fibers and bisacrylamide at room temperature. This process is simple, fast and inexpensive, and has significant potential for industrial applications. The prepared material has numerous adsorption sites, resulting in the highly efficient removal of anionic dyes and copper ions from aqueous media. The maximum adsorption capacities of this cellulose-based adsorbent for the dyes Acid Black 1 and Acid Red 18 and for copper ions were 751.8, 417.9, and 51.3 mg g(-1), respectively. Regeneration experiments showed that the removal efficiencies for all model pollutants remained above 92 % after five consecutive recycling trials. These results indicate that amide-functionalized cellulose-based adsorbents could possibly be used to treat industrial wastewaters.
Microwave irradiation synthesis of a new kind of adsorbent for heavy metal ions and study of its adsorptive performance

Abstract:A new kind adsorbent by grafting co-polymerization of Acrylic Acid (AA) and Acrylamide (AM) on cellulose for heavy metal ions was prepared using microwave irradiation technique and oxidation-deoxidation initiator system. Some factors were investigated and optimized. Furthermore, the structure of this adsorbent was measured by FTIR and adsorptive complex was tested by XPS which was used to prove chelateding groups. Under the optimal preparation conditions, the adsorption ratio of Cu + was 99.2% and the capability of adsorption was 49.6 mg/g. Adsorbent resin could be regenerated using 8% NH 3 · H 2O, which generation ratio was over 85%. Adsorbent could be used for 7 times and every time adsorption ratio overpassed 90%.

Abstract:In this study, a graft copolymerization was performed using the acrylic monomer onto cellulose derived from cornstalk. Thus, cellulose-graft-poly(methyl acrylate) (PMA) was prepared by a free radical reaction. Further, the poly(hydroxamic acid) ligand was created from PMA-grafting copolymer with hydroxylamine in an alkaline medium. Characterization techniques such as FT-IR, FE-SEM and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) analysis were performed with the desired products such as cellulose, PMA-grafted cellulose and poly(hydroxamic acid). This study examined the performance of heavy metals removal from an aqueous solution using the poly(hydroxamic acid) ligand. The impact of several factors, such as pH, metal ion concentration and agitation period were studied using the batch adsorption approach of several metal ions (Cu 2+ , Fe 2+ , Co 2+ , Cr 3+ and Ni 2+ ). This ligand showed attractive sorption capacity with Cu 2+ ions, obtained a maximal capacity of 331 mg g −1 at optimal pH 6. Among other metals also showed satisfactory adsorption capacity for Fe 2+ , Co 2+ , Cr 3+ and Ni 2+ were 290, 251, 230 and 210 mg g −1 , respectively. On the other hand, results demonstrated that adsorption by the poly(hydroxamic acid) ligand is regulated by the pH of the solution. The adsorption isotherm study is well explained by the Freundlich model with a high correlation coefficient value (R 2 > 0.99). The experimental results suggest that the cornstalk cellulose-based poly(hydroxamic acid) ligand exhibits a heterogeneous surface, resulting in multiple layers formation on its surface. The heavy metals adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R 2 > 0.997). This polymer ligand is capable of outstanding toxic metals removal magnitude, up to 90–98% from industrial wastewater. The implementation of a poly(hydroxamic acid) ligand derived from cellulosic materials as an adsorbent for metal ion extraction exhibits a promising approach.

The results showed the N and O atoms in the amidoxime group can spontaneously interact with Cu 2 + and Zn 2 + through sharing long pair electrons to generate stable coordination structure, which was the dominant adsorption mechanism. Besides, the enlarged surface area, improved hydrophilicity and dispersion offered by AO-Cell facilitate the adsorption process by increasing the accessibility of absorption sites. As results of these synergetic modification, AO-Cell can remain effective in a wide pH range (1 - 6) and reach adsorption equilibrium within 60 min. At optimal conditions, the achieved theoretical adsorption capacity is as high as 84.81 mg/g for Cu 2 + and 61.46 mg/g for Zn 2 + in the solution with multiple ions. The competition between Cu 2 + and Zn 2 + in occupying the absorption sites arises from the difference in the metallic ion affinity and covalent index with the adsorbent as demonstrated by the MD analysis. Importantly, AOCell demonstrated favorable recyclability after up to 10 adsorption-desorption cycles.

Abstract:The study was conducted regarding the adsorption effect of Cr(VI) on polyethylenamine cellulose, the affecting factors on the adsorption of Cr(VI), such as pH value, adsorption time, polyethylenamine cellulose dose and initial concentration of Cr(VI) were investigated. The results showed that adsorption efficiencies of Cr(VI) is more than 90%, the suitable conditions for the adsorption are as following: pH 2, adsorption time 10h, polyethylenamine cellulose 10 g/L, initial concentration of Cr(VI) 10 mg/L. The adsorption isotherms could be well fitted by both Langmuir and Freundlich equation. The law of dynamics for the adsorption can be simulated by pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order kinetics models.

Abstract:In this study, sugarcane bagasse (SCB) was treated with sodium hydroxide and bleached to separate the non-cellulose components to obtain cellulose (CE) fibres. Cross-linked cellulose–poly(sodium acrylic acid) hydrogel (CE–PAANa) was successfully synthesised via simple free-radical graft-polymerisation to remove heavy metal ions. The structure and morphology of the hydrogel display an open interconnected porous structure on the surface of the hydrogel. Various factors influencing batch adsorption capacity, including pH, contact time, and solution concentration, were investigated. The results showed that the adsorption kinetics were in good agreement with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and that the adsorption isotherms followed the Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacities calculated by the Langmuir model are 106.3, 333.3, and 163.9 mg/g for Cu(II), Pb(II), and Cd(II), respectively. Furthermore, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS) results demonstrated that cationic exchange and electrostatic interaction were the main heavy metal ions adsorption mechanisms. These results demonstrate that CE–PAANa graft copolymer sorbents from cellulose-rich SCB can potentially be used for the removal of heavy metal ions.

Abstract:The graft copolymer, chitosan-g-AM-AA, was prepared through graft polymerization of acryamide and acryl acid onto chitosan by K2S2O8 initiation under homogeneous conditions in 2 wt% acetic acid. The product was characterized by infrared spectrometry (IR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The adsorption capacities and removal ratioes of the copolymer for heavy metal ions were studied by using medium concentration (about 50mg/L) of Cu2+ ,Zn 2+and Pb2+ at pH 6. The results indicated the copolymer exhibited higher adsorbability than chitosan.

Abstract:A novel cellulose-based adsorbent was successfully prepared by radiation induced grafting of glycidyl methacrylate onto the surface of cellulose microspheres, followed by epoxy ring-opening reaction to introduce iminodiacetic acid disodium (IDA). The characterization of the obtained adsorbent was investigated in detail. To evaluate the adsorption performance of the novel adsorbent in comparison with commercial adsorbent D850, batch and column mode adsorption experiments against Cu (II) and Ni (II) were conducted. The equilibrium time for Cu (II) and Ni (II) were 20 and 30 min, which is much shorter than that of commercial adsorbent. The adsorption capacity of the adsorbent for Cu (II) and Ni (II) reached 96.90 and 111.11 mg/g, respectively. Applicability of the novel adsorbent on the actual wastewater generated from electroplating plants was also investigated. It was found that the novel adsorbent possessed a higher adsorption/desorption velocity and broadly similar adsorption capacity with the commercial adsorbent, signifying the effective adsorption performance of the developed grafted adsorbent.

Abstract:In this work, we develop a facile route to prepare a cellulose-based adsorbent, namely carboxymethylated cellulose fiber (CMF), for the water purification. The as-prepared CMF bio-adsorbent was synthesized via a controllable carboxymethylation modification in the case of maintaining inherent fibrous framework. The CMF bio-adsorbent was applied to adsorb the heavy metal ions, such as Cu(II) and Ni(II), from aqueous solution. Results showed that the CMF adsorbent exhibited excellent adsorption capacity toward these ions and a higher selectivity for the Cu(II) removal based on surface complexation and electrostatic interaction mechanisms. Besides, the adsorption isotherm of Cu(II) fitted better with the Langmuir isotherm model. Moreover, the relationship between the charges and adsorption capacity of CMF to Cu(II) revealed that the enhanced adsorption capacity of CMF adsorbent can mainly attributed to its increased inner charges rather than surface charges, which can provide a new strategy for the further modification of cellulose-based adsorbent.

Abstract:A novel degradable adsorbent for the removal of heavy metal ions from waste water, a hyperbranched aliphatic polyester grafted cellulose (HAPE- Cell), was successfully prepared by the simple one-pot method for the first time. The hyperbranched aliphatic polyester was grafted from the surface hydroxyl groups of natural cotton fibers via the solution polycondensation of the AB(2) monomer, 2, 2-bis( hydroxymethyl) propionic acid ( bis-MPA), with the catalysis of p-toluenesulfonic acid (p-TSA). The HAPE- Cell was characterized by elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The adsorption properties of the HAPE- Cell towards the heavy metal ions (Cu(II), Hg(II), Zn(II), and Cd(II)) were also preliminarily investigated.

Abstract:In the context of sustainable development, the escalating need for hazardous wastewater treatment underscores the importance of developing innovative cellulose adsorbents for pollutant removal and separation. This study introduces a novel aerogel composed of a vinyl-functional covalent organic framework (COFs) and cellulose nanofibrils synthesized via in situ growth of COFs on aminated cellulose nanofibers (ACNFs). The aerogel's surface is enriched with active functional groups (hydroxyl, amino, aldehyde, benzene, etc.), enabling diverse physical and chemical interactions with pollutants. Furthermore, a simple post-modification strategy involving thiol-ene click reactions was employed to modify the surface vinyl groups, resulting in two new aerogels (ACNF/COF-COOH and ACNF/COF-SH) to enhance interactions with different aqueous pollutants, specifically by targeting the removal of cationic dyes such as methylene blue (MB) and heavy metals. ACNF/COF-COOH aerogel exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 563.0 mg/g for MB, while ACNF/COF-SH aerogel demonstrated high selectivity for heavy metal ion removal, with a mercury ion (Hg 2+ ) distribution coefficient (K d ) of 22,782.0 mL/g. This novel cellulose-based aerogel offers significant potential for removing pollutants from water bodies.

Mechanism and industrial application feasibility analysis on microwave-assisted rapid synthesis of amino-carboxyl functionalized cellulose for enhanced heavy metal removal

Abstract:The study presented the successful microwave-assisted (MW-assisted) preparation of a novel adsorbent derived from rice straw (RSMW-AC) and explored its adsorption performance toward heavy metal ions from water. The RSMW-AC was rapidly synthesized through pretreatment and one step grafting via the MW-assisted approach. The quantitative predictive correlations between target performance of RSMW-AC and process parameters were obtained through the response surface methodology (RSM). Meanwhile, the optimal preparation process conditions were determined: NaOH solution concentration, 20%; MW irradiation temperature for pretreatment, 100 and 150 degrees C; MW irradiation time for pretreatment and grafting, 10 and 60 min; EDTAD-RS mass ratio, 3. The RSMW-AC showed a good adsorption of different heavy metal ions from water (152.39, 55.46, 52.91, 35.60 and 20.11 mg g(-1) for Pb(II), Mn(II), Cd(II), Cu(II) and Ni(II), respectively). The adsorption behaviors followed the Langmuir model and pseudo second-order kinetics model with a highly significant correlation. Also of note was that amino and carboxyl groups were successfully introduced on the rice straw based on characterization results. Furthermore, preparation mechanism was explored to reveal reasons why microwave irradiation could accelerate the preparation of the adsorbent; its adsorption process was dominated by electrostatic attraction and chelation. Finally, the study made the industrial application feasibility analysis of MW-assisted approach used for pretreatment and graft reaction of agro-waste biomass. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Presently, heavy metal pollution in natural water resources is considered very hazardous. The purpose of this research is to develop the novel cellulose-based ion exchange resins from water hyacinth and the effect of chelating agents on the removal of heavy metal cations from single-metal aqueous solutions has been investigated. Cellulose was prepared from the stem of water hyacinth by alkaline treatment process then cellulose-based ion exchange resins were prepared via esterification reaction between cellulose with two different chelating agents such as pyromellitic dianhydride and 3,3’,4,4’- benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride. The chemical structure, crystallinity index, surface morphology, and thermal stability of resins were characterized and analyzed with FTIR, XRD, SEM, and TGA, respectively. The results confirmed the esterification reaction between anhydride groups of chelating agents with hydroxyl groups of celluloses due to the apparent peak of the ester group. Heavy metal cations adsorptions were studied in optimum conditions and the residual concentration of heavy metal cations was measured by ICP. These resins showed high adsorption capacities of more than 98 mg/g for Pb 2+ , Cd2 + , Cu2 + , and Ni 2+ . Moreover, the adsorption process was controlled by the ion exchange mechanism. Therefore, the novel cellulose-based ion exchange resins could be suitable for the removal of pollutants from wastewater.
An Aminosalicylic Acid-Modified Cellulose Composite Used for Mercury (II) Removal from Single and Quarternary Aqueous Solutions

Abstract:A high efficient adsorbent based on cellulose with good reusability towards mercury (II) ions was successfully prepared via grafting copolymerization and coupling technology. Batch adsorption experiments were conducted to reveal adsorption behavior of the as-prepared adsorbents. Effects of the initial concentration, pH of the solution, time of contact, temperature and coexisting ions of the system were investigated, respectively. Polymerization reaction via glycidyl methacrylate was carried out to greatly enhance the following graft efficiency with the polydentate ligand which could catch the heavy metal ions. The results indicated the adsorption capacity was as high as 657.9mg/g for Hg (II). Meanwhile, Langmuir isotherm model was proved to be appropriate in describing the experimental data, and the adsorption process was found to fit well with the pseudo-second-order model. In addition, the adsorbent could be regenerated with high recovery efficiency after adsorption; and the equilibrium adsorption capacity for Hg (II) was maintained at 204.5mg/g after 10 adsorption-desorption cycles, which is of great importance for practical application.

Abstract:Biocompatible and high content grafted carboxymethyl cellulose-gpoly(acrylic acid) powder was successfully synthesized in an aqueous system, and used as adsorbents for the removal of Cu(II) in aqueous solution. The copolymer was characterized by FT-IR and SEM techniques. Graft copolymerization introduced a large number of carboxyl groups in the polymer and caused the micro-surface of the material to be porous. The fundamental adsorption behaviors of the material were studied. The adsorption kinetics was well fitted with pseudo-second order equation, while the adsorption isotherm preferred to be described the Langmuir equation. The maximum adsorption capacity obtained from the Langmuir model was 154.32 mg/g, indicating that the adsorption capacity of carboxymethyl cellulose was improved remarkably after grafting poly(acrylic acid). Moreover, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) has been used to investigate the adsorption mechanisms at molecular levels, which revealed that carboxyl groups are facile to form bidentate carboxylates with metal ions. Thus, this environment friendly copolymer will be a promising candidate for application in removal of heavy metal ions.

Abstract:Water pollution remains a serious problem for aquatic organism and human beings. Developing an efficient material which can simultaneously remove and convert pollutants into low or no harmful compounds is an essential issue. Targeting at this goal, a multifunctional and amphoteric wastewater treatment material of Co-MOF and functionalized cellulose-based composite (CMC/SA/PEI/ZIF-67) was designed and prepared. Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and sodium alginate (SA) were selected as support to construct an interpenetrating network structure and made it crosslinked with polyethyleneimine (PEI) for further in situ growth of ZIF-67 with good dispersion. The material was characterized using an appropriate set of spectroscopic and analytical techniques. When applied in the adsorption of heavy metal oxyanions with no adjustment of pH, the adsorbent could completely decontaminate Cr(VI) at both low and high initial concentrations with good reduction rates. The adsorbent maintained good reusability after five cycles. Meanwhile, the cobalt species of CMC/SA/PEI/ZIF-67 can activate peroxymonosulfate to generate high oxidizing substances (such as SO 4 ˉ · and ·OH ˉ radicals) to degrade cationic rhodamine B dye within 120 min, thus indicating the amphoteric and catalytic nature of our CMC/SA/PEI/ZIF-67 adsorbent. The mechanism of the adsorption and catalytic process was also discussed based with the assistance of different characterization analysis.

Abstract:An amino functionalized microcrystalline cellulose from corn stalk was prepared and its synthesis and operation conditions were optimized to remove Cu2+ from wastewater. To prepare this adsorbent, cellulose was grafted by glycidyl methacrylate in the presence of OP-10 as emulsifiers and potassium persulfate as initiators, then the grafted cellulose was aminated by diethylenetriamine. Batch experiments were performed to evaluate its adsorption capacity for Cu2+. Its adsorption process for Cu2+ was spontaneous and well fitted with pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm. The maximum adsorption capacity of this modified cellulose for Cu2+ was demonstrated to be 343 mg/g at 45 °C and pH 4.5. The adsorbent showed a promising future due to its high performance in the removal of toxic Cu2+ and reusability. From the characterization results of scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the adsorbent structure and adsorption mechanism could be inferred. The adsorption mechanism revealed that the primary and secondary amines were the main functional groups to adsorb Cu2+. The study results could provide a new route for the utilization of waste corn stalk to control water pollution caused by toxic metal ions.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:A new glutamic acid-modified cellulose was prepared and investigated as a bioadsorbent used for the simple and rapid removal of Cu2+ and Hg2+ from single and binary aqueous solutions. The effects of the initial concentration of heavy metal ions, pH of the solution and temperature on the adsorption capacity of the bioadsorbent were investigated. Equilibrium studies demonstrate that the adsorption of Cu2+ and Hg2+ follows the Langmuir model in a single aqueous solution system. Meanwhile, the adsorption kinetics were found to follow the pseudo-second-order model well. Competitive adsorption in the binary component system indicates the mutual inhibitation adsorption between the two metal ions. The FTIR and SEM-EDS results reveal that Cu2+ and Hg2+ are successfully adsorbed on the bioadsorbent by coordination and static interactions.
