Abstract:Tribological performance of the hot-pressed pure Al2O3 and its composites containing various hybrid contents of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were investigated under different loading conditions using the ball-on-disc method. Benchmarked against the pure Al2O3, the composite reinforced with a 0.5 wt% GNP exhibited a 23% reduction in the friction coefficient along with a promising 70% wear rate reduction, and a hybrid reinforcement consisting of 0.3 wt.% GNPs + 1 wt.% CNTs resulted in even better performance, with a 86% reduction in the wear rate. The extent of damage to the reinforcement phases caused during wear was studied using Raman spectroscopy. The wear mechanisms for the composites were analysed based on the mechanical properties, brittleness index and microstructural characterizations. The excellent coordination between GNPs and CNTs contributed to the excellent wear resistance property in the hybrid GNT-reinforced composites. GNPs played the important role in the formation of a tribofilm on the worn surface by exfoliation; whereas CNTs contributed to the improvement in fracture toughness and prevented the grains from being pulled out during the tribological test.

Abstract:This study focuses on understanding the corrosion and tribological behaviour of hybrid aluminium composites in diverse environmental conditions (dry, aqueous and alkaline). The characteristics are compared under corrosive conditions to check the tendency to wear and corrosion for its probable use in marine applications. Eutectic aluminium–silicon (Al–Si) alloys and hybrid aluminium composites enhanced with alumina (6 wt%) and varying weights of graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) (1, 2, 3 wt%) samples were fabricated by spark plasma sintering. The corrosion behaviour of the hybrid composites was investigated by potentiodynamic polarization technique using 3.5 wt% NaCl solution as electrolyte. A chromium-plated chrome steel ball of 10-mm diameter was used for the ball-on-disk test at varying load (50–250 N), sliding velocity 0.12 m/s, sliding distance 120 m, frequency 30 Hz, stroke 2 mm, and test duration 1000 s to evaluate the tribological behaviour. An increase in the corrosion and tribological performance was observed with an increase in GNP concentration in the fabricated hybrid composite sample. Composite sample with 3 wt% of GNP had the highest average electrochemical open-circuit potential value of − 0.731 V, followed by 2 wt% (− 0.743 V), 1 wt% (− 0.747 V) and base (− 0.771 V). The presence of GNP reduced the vulnerability to corrosive degradation as being superhydrophobic, it inhibited the chloride ion attack by offering lesser adsorption of the salt solution on the hybrid composites’ surfaces. The wear mechanism was discussed by interpretation from scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and 3D surface profilometry. The formation of carbon protective layer at the interface led to a reduction in coefficient of friction and wear of hybrid composite with 3 wt% of GNP by more than 90% and 60%, respectively, at all environmental conditions as compared to base alloy.

Abstract:The study investigates the effects of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) on the tribological properties of aluminum-based nanocomposites, both annealed after extrusion and non-annealed. It also examines the role of nanosized Al4C3 (aluminum carbide), which forms in the annealed Al/GNPs nanocomposite, on the tribological performance of the nanocomposites. The nanocomposites were fabricated using the powder metallurgy method. The microstructure of the composite materials was characterized using SEM, EDS, XRD and TEM techniques. The coefficient of friction (CF) and mass wear of the composites were measured using a pin-on-disk test under dry sliding friction conditions. The results showed that adding GNPs increased the coefficient of friction (CF) of the nanocomposites by up to 44% at 0.1 wt.% GNP, but the CF decreased by 15% at 1.1 wt.% GNP. The optimal concentration of GNPs for minimizing the CF and mass wear of Al-based nanocomposites was 0.1 wt.%. Additionally, the presence of Al4C3 in the annealed Al/GNP nanocomposite had a positive effect on the CF at low GNP concentrations, with a 38% increases at 0.1 wt.% GNP, but this effect diminished as the GNP concentration increased. The study also found that the mass wear of the nanocomposites increased with the GNP concentration, with a 46% increase in the mass wear from 0.1 wt.% GNP to 0.5 wt.% GNP and a 202% increase from 0.1 wt.% GNP to 1.1 wt.% GNP. The presence of Al4C3 also affected the mass wear, with the effect diminishing as the GNP concentration increased. The study observed an increase in the mass wear with the increase in the GNP concentrations, but the mass wear of the annealed Al/GNPs with 1.1 wt.% GNP and Al4C3 was 52% lower than the Al composite with 1.1 wt.%. Overall, this study provides insights into the role of GNPs and Al4C3 on the tribological performance of aluminum-based nanocomposites.

Abstract:Tribological performance comparison of Graphene nanoplatelet and Halloysite clay nanotube-based nanolubricants in an aluminum-based hybrid composite/steel tribo-contact was addressed by suspending nanoparticles in concentrations of 0.025, 0.05, 0.1 and 0.5%wt within SAE 5W40 motor oil. Dispersion stability and thermophysical properties of the designed nanolubricants were also evaluated. In order to perform tribological experiments by using a pin-on-ring configuration tribometer at various loads and rotation speeds, a hybrid composite was fabricated by powder metallurgy-extrusion method and characterized. The lubrication regime was characterized using stribeck curves and minimum film thickness. The worn surfaces morphology of the pin materials were characterized by Scanning electron microscopy images, Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and surface roughness measurements. The obtained highest friction coefficient and wear rate reductions were 40 and 36% with 0.5%wt Graphene nanoplatelet, and 25 and 10% for 0.1%wt Halloysite clay nanotube-based nanolubricants, respectively, during a mixed lubrication regime. The wear mechanism on the worn surface of the hybrid composite was predominantly abrasive with plastic yielding and delamination. Scanning electron microscopy images, Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and surface roughness measurements confirmed the Graphene nanoplatelet and Halloysite clay nanotube deposition on the worn surfaces and the formation of tribo-films that protect the sliding contacts.

Experimental study on tribological properties of Cu–Al2O3 nanocomposite hybridized by graphene nanoplatelets

Abstract:Mechanical and tribological properties of Cu–Al2O3 nanocomposite hybridized by silver (Ag) coated graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) were studied. Four different GNPs content, 0.3, 0.6, 0.9 and 1.2 wt% were considered to highlight its influence on the properties of the produced hybrid nanocomposite. The synthesis of hybrid nanocomposites involves ball milling and hot pressing. Microstructural observations showed homogenous distribution of both Al2O3 and GNPs. The results showed significant hardness improvement with increasing GNPs content reaching 55.2% compared to the pure Cu due to the grain refinement, high strength of GNPs and the reinforcing of grain boundaries by the precipitation of GNPs. Moreover, the wear resistance is increased while the coefficient of friction is decreased by increasing GNPs content. Among the all manufactured samples, Cu-10 wt% Al2O3 +1.2 wt% GNPs shows the highest mechanical and the wear resistance. Additionally, it shows the lowest coefficient of friction highlighting its importance for tribological applications.

Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part L: Journal of Materials: Design and Applications, Ahead of Print. This work intends to fabricate Al6061 alloy and Al6061-graphene composites via powder metallurgy and induction hot pressing techniques. This study also investigates the effect of graphene content (0.15, 0.30, and 0.45 wt.%), heat-treatment process (sintering, hot-pressing process), and applied load (5 and 10 N) on the compressive strength, hardness, density, mass loss, friction coefficient, wear rate, and microstructure. Tribological test results showed that minimum mass loss (0.0011 g), wear rate (8.5 × 10−8 mm3/(Nm)), and friction coefficient (0.23) were obtained at sintered and hot-pressed Al6061–0.15 wt.%graphene composite for a 5 N load. Hardness and compressive strength increased from 95 HV, 253 MPa (Al6061 alloy) to 151 HV, 395 MPa (Al6061–0.15 wt.%graphene) with sintering and induction hot pressing process, respectively. Compared to Al6061 alloy, the wear rate and compressive strength of Al6061–0.15 wt.%graphene improved by 30% and 33% for sintered and hot-pressed specimens, respectively. It has been determined that the tribological and mechanical properties of sintered and hot-pressed specimens are ∼15% better than those of only sintered samples. As a result of the paper, it was concluded that the addition of uniformly dispersed graphene and the induction hot-pressing process enhanced the mechanical and tribological behavior of aluminum-based composites.

Abstract:In the current study, the B319 aluminum (Al) alloy-graphene composites were fabricated using a stir-casting process, and the composites' tribological behavior was examined under dry sliding conditions. The B319–0.3 wt% graphene exhibited ∼42% and ∼52% higher friction and wear resistance than the baseline B319 alloy. Both friction and wear resistance of the B319 alloy deteriorated at higher graphene contents (0.5 and 0.7 wt%), indicating the best tribological performance was achieved with 0.3 wt% graphene addition. The wear in the base alloy primarily occurred by mechanically mixed layer (MML) delamination via subsurface crack propagation, while the wear in the B319 - 0.3 wt% graphene composite was driven by MML fragmentation, accompanied by adhesive, oxidative, and abrasive wear mechanisms.

Abstract:Although aluminum and its alloys have lightweight and high formability, their low wear resistance and mechanical properties limit their applications compared to other metals. In this study, different ratios of alumina (1-15 wt.%) and graphene nanoparticles (0.1-0.5 wt.%) were reinforced with the aim of increasing the mechanical and tribological properties of Al7075 aluminum alloy. The production of Al7075-Al 2 O 3 and Al7075-Al 2 O 3 -Graphene composites was carried out by powder metallurgy and induction hot pressing methods. The effects of induction hot pressing and Al 2 O 3 and graphene content on the microstructure, mechanical, and tribological properties were investigated. In the study, SEM, SEM-EDX, and XRD were used for the microstructure analyses. The mechanical and tribological tests consist of density measurement, compression test, Vickers hardness test, and pin-on-disk wear test. As a result, the highest apparent density (2.72 g/cm 3 ), hardness (178 ± 1 HV), compressive strength (486 ± 4 MPa), the lowest weight loss (0.001 g) and wear rate (7.5 × 10 −5 mm 3 /(Nm)) were obtained in sintered and induction hot-pressed Al7075-12Al 2 O 3 -0.1 graphene composites. Consequently, the induction hot pressing and reinforcements (Al 2 O 3 and graphene) improved the hardness, compressive strength, weight loss, wear rate, and coefficient of friction by 48.4%, 70.5%, 66.7%, 21.9%, and 54.2%, respectively.

Abstract:This research aimed to achieve three main objectives: studying the effect of milling time on graphite exfoliation, reducing fabrication heating time to prevent aluminum carbide formation, and investigating the impact of (alumina/graphene)/silver on aluminum properties. Four aluminum nanocomposites were produced using cold and hot pressing at 560 °C for 50 min under 1000 MPa. Raman analysis confirmed graphite exfoliation with alumina to graphene after 40 h of milling. The hot-pressed aluminum-5(alumina/graphene)/10 silver exhibited the smallest crystallite size at 79.926 nm and the highest hardness at 61 HV. It also demonstrated the lowest wear rate under different applied loads (45 and 90 N). The coefficient of friction was measured under 90 N, revealing the lowest mean coefficient of friction of 0.5 for aluminum-5(alumina/graphene)/10 silver, attributed to the presence of graphene and silver as solid lubricants. Aluminum/(alumina/graphene) showed superior corrosion resistance in the absence of silver, reducing the corrosion rate from 0.01 mm/year for pure aluminum to 0.0073 mm/year with the addition of 5 (alumina/graphene). The aluminum-5(alumina/graphene)/10 silver recorded a corrosion rate of 0.0114 mm/year.

Abstract:Lighter and more powerful next generation vehicles and other rotary machinery demand bearings to operate in harsher conditions for higher efficiency, and the continuous development of advanced low-wear and friction materials is thus becoming even more important to meet these requirements. New aluminium composites reinforced with high performance lubricate phases such as graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) are very promising and have been vigorously investigated. By maintaining a low coefficient of friction (COF) and offering great strength against wear due to their self-lubricating capability, the solid lubricant like GNPs protect the bearing surface from wear damage and prevent change in metallurgical properties during temperature fluctuations. This paper first studies the high-temperature tribological performance of aluminium matrix composites reinforced with GNP, consolidated via powder metallurgy, then elucidates their tribological mechanism. We report that the best tribological performance is achieved by the composite containing 2.0 wt% GNP, with an extraordinarily low COF of 0.09 and a specific wear rate of 3.5×10 −2 mm 3 ·N −1 ·m −1 , which represent 75% and 40% reduction respectively, against the plain aluminium consolidated under identical conditions. The in-track and out-of-track Raman analysis have confirmed the role of GNPs in creating a tribofilm on the counterpart surface which contributed to the excellent performance.

Abstract:Graphene reinforced high temperature titanium matrix composite synthesized by spark plasma sintering (SPS) was prepared from mixed powders of graphene oxide (GO) and 600 degrees C high temperature titanium alloy (TA29). SEM, EDS, XRD, Raman spectroscopy, UMT and SRV tribotester were employed to investigate the microstructure and tribological properties. Microstructural studies indicated that the added graphene oxide was substantially decomposed into graphene during the sintering process and did not cause a significant increase in oxygen content of the TA29 matrix. Graphene was observed to remain after the sintering process and be evenly dispersed in the TA29 matrix. The friction coefficient and wear rate under room temperature and light load were reduced by 15 and 60% respectively, because the graphene dispersed in the matrix was proved to improve the conditions of the frictional interface by self-lubricating effect. The wear rate under high temperature and heavy load was reduced by about 25% for the increasing in the yield strength of graphene reinforced TA29 matrix composite.
Sliding Wear and Friction Properties of Al-Graphene Composites under Oil Lubrication

Abstract:In this work, Al-graphene composites were fabricated using the powder metallurgy route. This technique includes ultrasonic stirring, mechanical stirring, ball milling, filtering, drying, pressing, and heat-treatment. The influence of graphene amount (0.1-0.5 wt.%) on the microstructural, mechanical, and tribological behavior under oil lubrication was examined. The highest density (2.52 g/cm 3 ), tensile stress (119 MPa), and hardness (57 HV) were obtained at Al-0.1% graphene composite. The minimum mass loss (0.2 mg) and wear rate (1.57 × 10 −5 mm 3 /(Nm)) were detected at Al-0.1% graphene for a 10 N load under oily conditions. Also, a minimum friction coefficient (0.018) was obtained in Al-0.5% GNPs under oily conditions. As a result of the tests carried out, graphene addition enhances the wear resistance and mechanical strength of the composites up to 0.1 wt.% content. After 0.1% graphene amount, the properties of the specimens deteriorated on account of the accumulation of graphene.

Abstract:In recent years, graphene‐based nanomaterials have attracted extensive attention because of their excellent physical and chemical properties, such as high strength, high conductivity, high thermal conductivity and excellent lubrication performance. Here, the latest research progresses of graphene‐based nanomaterials are reviewed in this paper, and its synthesis method, unique structure, dispersion improvement strategy and wide application in tribology are emphatically discussed. Graphene‐based materials are synthesized by typical chemical vapor deposition and reduced graphene oxide, showing nanoporous structure characteristics and excellent layered structure. Furthermore, through adjusting the chemical structure for the material, the graphene‐based materials with specific lubricating properties can be designed to meet the use requirements under different working conditions. In view of the easy agglomeration of graphene, physical and chemical dispersion methods, such as in‐situ polymerization and functionalization treatment, were introduced, which significantly improved its dispersibility in the matrix. In tribology, graphene‐based nanocomposites present the excellent anti‐friction and anti‐wear properties, which effectively reduce the coefficient of friction and prolong the service life of materials with forming the stable lubricating films. The summary for graphene‐based materials provides theoretical basis and technical support for applications in high‐end manufacturing, energy storage, and protective coatings.

Synergistic effects of TiC and graphene on the microstructure and tribological properties of Al2024 matrix composites

Abstract:Al matrix composites have attracted significant attention of researchers in recent years due to their lightweight, excellent mechanical and tribological properties. In this study, an Al2024 matrix hybrid composite (AMHC) reinforced with both TiC nanoparticles and graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) was produced via a route of powder metallurgy. And its microstructure, microhardness and tribological properties are compared with those of unreinforced Al2024 alloy matrix and Al2024 matrix composites reinforced with either only TiC or GNPs. It was found that the distribution of Al2Cu, TiC nanoparticles and GNPs in the matrix and the wear resistance are significantly improved when introducing both TiC nanoparticles and the GNPs. The wear mechanisms change from the adhesion-dominant wear for Al2024 and the other singly reinforced composites into abrasive-dominant wear for the hybrid composite. The significantly improved wear resistance of the AMHC is attributed to the synergistic effects of reinforcing and self-lubricating of the TiC and GNPs.

Abstract:Graphene has been considered an appropriate reinforcing filler for aluminium/titanium metal matrix composites due to its outstanding strength and stiffness and its exceptional thermal and electrical properties. The variable concentrations of graphene nanoplates (GNPs) was considered in this research, such as 2 %, 4 %, 6 % and 8 %, for determining wear properties and interface bonding aluminium alloy composites. The graphene-reinforced Al 7075/10 % TiB2 hybrid nanocomposite samples were produced using ball milling and pressure-less vacuum sintering process. The wear loss was investigated for all the variable graphene concentration samples with respect to wear load and sliding distance by pin-on-disk method and optimum concentatrion of GNPs was obtained by design of experimental (DOE) analysis. Further, Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM), Elemental mapping, Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX), and microhardness tests were utilized to analyze the graphene-reinforced Al 7075/10 % TiB2 hybrid nanocomposites, It was concluded that the wear resistance and microhardness of Al/10 % TiB2/4 % GNPs increased by 71.3 % and 17.6 %, respectively, compared with non-hybrid aluminium alloy materials. Moreover, a Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) has been used to investigate the interfacial strength of aluminium alloy composites. The wear loss characteristics was also optimized using and central composite design (CCD) of response surface methodology (RSM).

Abstract:Magnesium (Mg) and graphene in alloy formulations are of paramount importance for lightweight engineering applications. In the present study, ZE10 Mg-alloy-based nanocomposites reinforced with graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) having a thickness of 10–20 nm were fabricated via ultrasound-assisted stir casting. The effect of GNP contents (0.25, 0.5, and 1.0 wt.%) on the microstructure, Vickers hardness, and tensile properties of nanocomposites was investigated. Further, tribological studies were performed under a ball-on-disc sliding wear configuration against a bearing ball counterbody, at room and elevated temperatures of 100 °C and 200 °C, to comprehend temperature-induced wear mechanisms and friction evolution. It was revealed that the GNP addition resulted in grain coarsening and increased porosity rate of the Mg alloy. While the composites exhibited improved hardness by 20–35% at room temperature and 100 °C, a minor change was observed in their hardness and tensile yield strength values at 200 °C with respect to the GNP-free alloy. A notable improvement in lowering and stabilizing friction (coefficient of friction at 200 °C~0.25) and wear values was seen for the self-lubricating GNP-added composites at all sliding temperatures. The worn surface morphology indicated a simultaneous occurrence of abrasive and adhesive wear mode in all samples at room temperature and 100 °C, while delamination and smearing along with debris compaction (tribolayer protection) were the dominant mechanisms of wear at 200 °C. Inclusively, the results advocate steady frictional conditions, improved wear resistance, and favorable wear-protective mechanisms for the Mg alloy–GNP nanocomposites at room and elevated temperatures.

Abstract:TiC-graphene dual-reinforced Al matrix hybrid nanocomposites (AMHNs) were synthesised by powder metallurgy. Microstructures, compressive and tribological properties of the AMHNs with different fractions of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) were studied and compared with Al2024 alloy, and TiC or GNPs singly reinforced Al composites. The results show the microstructures and distributions of TiC and GNPs are homogenised with the increasing content of GNPs. The compressive properties and wear resistance of the composites are improved efficiently by synergistic influences of TiC and GNPs. Significantly, Al-5.0 wt. % TiC-1.0 wt. % GNPs has the most superior compressive properties and highest wear resistance with a wear rate of 4.62 × 10-4 mm3/Nm, which is a 94.4% reduction compared with that of unreinforced Al alloy.

Abstract:In recent years, considerable investigations have been focused on graphene/molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanocomposites due to their excellent lubrication performances. However, the poor dispersive stability limits their massive applications. This paper summarizes the preparation and dispersive behavior of graphene/MoS2 nanocomposites and discusses their tribological properties and the lubrication mechanisms. In addition, the challenges of the dispersibility and lubrication properties of graphene/MoS2 nanocomposites are also discussed. It has proved that the modified graphene/MoS2 nanocomposites present promising prospect in tribological applications.

Abstract:Monomer casting (MC) nylon/graphene oxide nanocomposites were synthesized by an alkali-catalyzed anionic ring-opening polymerization. Studies on mechanical and tribological properties of the composites were carried out. The results showed that graphene oxide of very low content had a notable effect on reinforcing the MC nylon matrix. The incorporation of graphene oxide into MC nylon largely reduced wear and friction under dry sliding. The nanocomposites have lower wear rates in comparison with neat MC nylon and the greater the difference, the greater are the loads and the sliding velocities. The SEM micrographs of the worn surface revealed their wear mechanisms. The morphology of a uniform transfer film on the counterpart ring and fine wear debris for the nanocomposites corresponded to the improved wear performance.

Abstract:Purpose Aluminum alloy is considered an ideal material in aerospace, automobile and other fields because of its lightweight, high specific strength and easy processing. However, low hardness and strength of the surface of aluminum alloys are the main factors that limit their applications. The purpose of this study is to obtain a composite coating with high hardness and lubricating properties by applying GO–PVA over MAO coating. Design/methodology/approach A pulsed bipolar power supply was used as power supply to prepare the micro-arc oxidation (MAO) coating on 6061 aluminum sample. Then a graphene oxide-polyvinyl alcohol (GO–PVA) composite coating was prepared on MAO coating for subsequent experiments. Samples were characterized by Fourier infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. The friction test is carried out by the relative movement of the copper ball and the aluminum disk on the friction tester. Findings Results showed that the friction coefficient of MAO samples was reduced by 80% after treated with GO–PVA composite film. Originality/value This research has made a certain contribution to the surface hardness and tribological issues involved in the lightweight design of aluminum alloys.
