Abstract:Identifying the structure sensitivity of catalysts in reactions, such as Fischer-Tropsch synthesis from CO and H-2 over cobalt catalysts, is an important yet challenging issue in heterogeneous catalysis. Based on a first-principles kinetic study, we find for the first time that CO activation on hexagonal close-packed (HCP) Co not only has much higher intrinsic activity than that of face centered-cubic (FCC) Co but also prefers a different reaction route, i.e., direct dissociation with HCP Co but H-assisted dissociation on the FCC Co. The origin is identified from the formation of various denser yet favorable active sites on HCP Co not available for FCC Co, due to their distinct crystallographic structure and morphology. The great dependence of the activity on the crystallographic structure and morphology of the catalysts revealed here may open a new avenue for better, stable catalysts with maximum mass-specific reactivity.
Quantitative Determination of C–C Coupling Mechanisms and Detailed Analyses on the Activity and Selectivity for Fischer–Tropsch Synthesis on Co(0001): Microkinetic Modeling with Coverage Effects

Abstract:The Fischer–Tropsch synthesis plays a significant role in re-forming natural resources to meet global demand for commodities, while there is ongoing oil depletion and population growth. Mechanisms have long been investigated, but they are still a heavily debated issue. In this work, all of the possible elementary reaction steps on a flat cobalt surface were calculated using density functional theory (DFT) with van der Waals interactions. Kinetic simulations using standard DFT data (free energies and barriers at low coverages), the so-called non-coverage-dependent kinetic model commonly used in the literature, are compared to those from a coverage-dependent kinetic model for the system. We show that the coverage-dependent kinetic model gives rise to a TOF which is approximately 6 orders of magnitude larger than the TOF calculated using the non-coverage-dependent kinetic model. Furthermore, it is found that Co(0001) is highly selective to olefin production, and it is very likely to produce long-chain hydrocarbons. Both models demonstrate that the CO insertion mechanism is the dominant mechanism on Co(0001). Our calculations also reveal that high coverage of CHx leads to the carbide mechanism being significant and low coverage of CHx results in the CO insertion mechanism being more favored. Direct CO dissociation is difficult on Co(0001), which leads to monomers CHx being unable to occupy a certain amount of surface coverage, causing the carbide mechanism to be inhibited. The reaction pathway through CO + H → CHO, CHO + H → CHOH, and CHOH → CH + OH is the main channel to form the monomer CH on the basis of the coverage-dependent kinetic model simulations. The temperature considerably affects the surface coverage and the total reaction rate, leading to the selectivity being highly temperature dependent. Our coverage-dependent kinetic model predicts that the selectivity of oxygenates is high in comparison to methane in the low-temperature region from 425 and 475 K. From 475 to 525 K, the selectivity toward CH4 increases. From 525 to 700 K, the selectivity of C2 decreases significantly and the selectivity of CH4 increases remarkably.

Abstract:Revealing the sensitivity of Co crystal facet structure to the mechanism of carbon chain growth in the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) is of great importance yet challenging issue in the heterogeneous catalysis. According to the occupied proportion of different crystal facets in the hcp and fcc Co crystal phases, this study for the first time identifies the essential relationship between the performance of carbon chain growth in the FTS and the structure of Co crystal facets. The hcp Co generally presents much higher intrinsic activity for the carbon chain growth via the carbide mechanism compared to the fcc Co via the CHO insertion mechanism. The findings will deepen our understandings about the crystal facet structure-dependent performances of Co catalysts in the FTS reactions, and provides a clear clue for the preparation of high performance Co catalysts through the rational design of Co crystal facet with more stepped B5-type active unit.

Abstract:Selective production of light olefins remains a great challenge in cobalt-catalyzed Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS). Understanding the nature of the active site and the structure–performance relationship can assist in the optimal design of more efficient catalysts to manipulate the product selectivity. In this work, on the basis of our previous experimental study, we performed a detailed computational study on the mechanisms of CO activation, methane formation, and C–C coupling on three cobalt phases, namely Co, Co2C, and Co3C, aiming at unraveling the intrinsic active site that determines the selectivity to light olefins in cobalt-catalyzed FTS reactions. The effective barrier difference was used as a descriptor to evaluate the catalytic selectivity. The structural and electronic properties were deeply analyzed to unveil the nature of the active site. Our results indicate that Co(111) favors the production of alkanes because both hydrogenation and CH2*–CH3* coupling have lower activation barriers. Co2C(111) has the highest selectivity toward CH4, which is attributed to its valley-type surface structure and strong binding energy for CH2* species, inhibiting the C−C coupling. Co3C(101) is beneficial for the production of light olefins by controlling C–C coupling, suppressing deep hydrogenation, and preventing methane formation, which originates from the synergistic effect between its ridge-type surface structure and the downward shift of the d band center. The reactions occurring at the Co/Co3C interface were also studied, and the results suggest that the electron accumulation at the interface prominently facilitates CO dissociation and benefits the formation and desorption of light olefins. Furthermore, we systematically compared the theoretical results in this work with our previous experimental results and discussed the effects of Mn promoter and CO coverage. This study provides theoretical guidance for the rational design of effective Co-based FTS catalysts to tune the FTS selectivity toward the desired light olefins.

Abstract:Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS, CO + H2 → long-chain hydrocarbons) because of its great significance in industry has attracted huge attention since its discovery. For Fe-based catalysts, after decades of efforts, even the product distribution remains poorly understood due to the lack of information on the active site and the chain growth mechanism. Herein powered by a newly developed machine-learning-based transition state (ML-TS) exploration method to treat properly reaction-induced surface reconstruction, we are able to resolve where and how long-chain hydrocarbons grow on complex in situ-formed Fe-carbide (FeCx) surfaces from thousands of pathway candidates. Microkinetics simulations based on first-principles kinetics data further determine the rate-determining and the selectivity-controlling steps, and reveal the fine details of the product distribution in obeying and deviating from the Anderson-Schulz-Flory law. By showing that all FeCx phases can grow coherently upon each other, we demonstrate that the FTS active site, namely the A-P5 site present on reconstructed Fe3C(031), Fe5C2(510), Fe5C2(021), and Fe7C3(071) terrace surfaces, is not necessarily connected to any particular FeCx phase, rationalizing long-standing structure-activity puzzles. The optimal Fe-C coordination ensemble of the A-P5 site exhibits both Fe-carbide (Fe4C square) and metal Fe (Fe3 trimer) features.

Abstract:Probing the product selectivity of Fischer-Tropsch catalysts is of prime scientific and industrial importance-with the aim to upgrade products and meet various end-use applications. In this work, the mechanisms for CH4 formation and C-1-C-1 coupling on a thermodynamically stable, terraced-like chi-Fe5C(2) (510) surface were studied by DFT calculations. It was found that this surface exhibits high effective barriers of CH4 formation for the three cases (i.e., 3.66, 2.81, and 2.39 eV), indicating the unfavorable occurrence of CH4 formation under FTS conditions. The C + CH and CH + CH are the most likely coupling pathways, which follow the carbide mechanism. Subsequently, the effective barrier difference between CH4 formation and C1-C1 coupling was used as a descriptor to quantify FTS selectivity. A comparison of the selectivity between this surface and the reported FTS catalysts surfaces was discussed in detail. More interestingly, this surface shows unexpectedly high C2+ selectivity. This indicates that manipulating the crystal facet of chi-Fe5C2 catalyst can effectively tune the FTS selectivity, which will open a new avenue for highly selective Fe-based FTS catalysts.

Abstract:Fischer–Tropsch synthesis over CoMn oxides is a surface-catalyzed structure-sensitive reaction. Active site changes greatly alter product distribution. The dynamics and essence of the changes in Co species during the reaction have seldom been explored. Herein, multiple characterizations were applied to confirm that two types of active sites, i.e., Co and Co2C, coexist on CoMnO x under the reaction conditions. Apart from the direct participation of carbon species in the reaction, the steady-state isotopic transient kinetic analysis also suggested the mutual transformation of carbon species in Co2C. The ratio of the two paths altered with the temperature, thus leading to Co2C-rich and Co-rich surfaces at intermediate and high temperatures, respectively. Kinetic calculations and microkinetic modeling showed that Co2C-rich surfaces facilitated CO adsorption and suppressed hydrogen adsorption. This gave high carbon-chain growth activity. The Co-rich surfaces showed high vacancy and hydrogen coverages, lowering the CO activation and CH4 formation energies.

Abstract:Cobalt carbide based catalyst shows a promising activity and selectivity in the direct conversion of syngas (a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen molecules) toward oxygenates and lower olefin. A mechanistic understanding of the cobalt carbide structure as well as its intrinsic reactivity under Fischer–Tropsch reaction conditions is vital but remains controversial. On the basis of ab initio thermodynamics and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we study here a number of the pristine Co2C surfaces with different orientations and compositions as well as their catalytic activity on CO direct dissociation. The corresponding phase diagram and equilibrium morphology of Co2C under a wide range of the chemical potential of carbon are constructed. Under a higher chemical potential of carbon (carbon-rich conditions), carbon-rich surfaces like (110) and (111) facets are preferentially exposed surfaces, whereas at a lower chemical potential of carbon, the stoichiometric surfaces like (011) facet could appear. Cobalt-rich surfaces such as (101) and (010) facets could be exposed only due to the kinetics hindrance under carbon-poor or hydrogen-rich conditions where the pristine bulk carbide is thermodynamically not stable. It is found that though CO adsorbs strongly on stoichiometric and carbon-rich Co2C surfaces, the barrier for subsequent CO direct dissociation is significantly high. The presence of the carbon vacancy could promote CO direct dissociation. However, the high energy cost to produce the carbon vacancy for instance via methanation limits its overall activity toward CO activation. Implications of the present results on the role of Co2C in direct conversion of syngas toward oxygenates and lower olefin are discussed along with available experiments.

Abstract:Typical Fischer–Tropsch catalysts display different selectivity and activity in catalyzing CO hydrogenation to diverse products. In this work, the preferable routes for CH3OH formation on Cu, chain growth on Co and CH4 formation on Ni are identified guided by the comprehensive reaction network that is mapped out by density function theory calculations. The difference in selectivity among catalysts is controlled delicately by several reactions, including CH3O+H↔CH3OH, CH3+H↔CH4 and CH2+CO↔CH2CO. The equilibrium shifts of CH2O+H↔CH3O and CH2+H↔CH3 also make an impact on selectivity. The distinct selectivity can be understood further with the activity of catalysts. Our results show that the ability of surface to absorb species increases in the order Cu<Ni<Co. Generally, Cu catalyzes the association reaction better than Co and Ni, while Co facilitates the dissociation reaction. Two key factors, thermodynamic effect and kinetic effect, are identified in determining the activity of catalyst. We proof that surface with strong binding capability promotes the dissociation reaction, meanwhile impedes the association reaction when the thermodynamic effect is dominant in determining the barrier height. The Brønsted–Evans–Polanyi relation is observed for C–O bond breaking reactions. In addition, kinetic effect also affects the barrier when special transition state exists. The tilt of CO at the transition state for COH formation and chain growth reactions introduces the interaction of atom O with surface. The stronger binding of atom O on Co is crucial to branch the selectivity of Co to chain growth rather than methane. Present study provides a comprehensive picture on the activity and selectivity of catalysts, which is the essential to develop novel catalyst for syngas conversion.
Particle-Size-Dependent Methane Selectivity Evolution in Cobalt-Based Fischer–Tropsch Synthesis

Abstract:The effects of the cobalt particle size in the range of 6.5–26.3 nm on the catalyst structural transformation and methane selectivity evolution in Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS) have been investigated. In situ X-ray diffraction experiments revealed that cobalt was maintained as CoO under a reaction environment when initial Co3O4 particles on SiO2 were below 8.4 nm. The large metallic Co particles can keep a stable size and phase state, indicating almost unchanged catalytic activity and methane selectivity. In contrast, small metallic Co or CoO particles show a gradual increase in methane selectivity with time on stream. Stable large metallic Co particles can be explained as the dominant surface high-coordinated Co atoms having a weak binding ability for H2O molecules, which are more difficult to be oxidized into CoO. It is believed that CoO rather than metallic Co atoms could interact with Si-OH groups to form inactive cobalt silicate (Co2SiO4), which leads to a higher methane selectivity and drives a decrease in the particle size during the FTS reaction. ZrO2 as a structural promoter highly dispersed on SiO2 was found to give a milder increase in methane selectivity due to fewer chances of Si-OH interacting with CoO species. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations combined with CO temperature-programmed desorption (CO-TPD), NH3-TPD, CO2-TPD, and Py-IR demonstrate that Co/ZrO2 interfacial sites play a crucial role in enhancing the catalytic activity as the electron accumulation in the interface region not only increases the CO adsorption amount but also promotes the CO dissociation on cobalt sites. At the same time, a higher surface C*/H concentration benefits a lower methane selectivity. ZrO2, which acts as a Lewis acid, can adsorb CO molecules abundantly but weakly by the interaction between Zr4+ cations and O atoms in CO. Especially, for the 15Co(C)/Q15 catalyst with initial CoO particles on SiO2, methane selectivity rapidly increases at an early reaction stage, which originates from easier accessible CoO reacting with Si-OH groups. In addition, both 15Co(C)/Q15 and 15Co(C)/10Zr(I)-Q15 catalysts show the dominant CoO phase, which is active in the FTS reaction. Indeed, the DFT calculations demonstrate that CO activation on the CoO(200) surface via the H-assisted CH2O dissociation pathway exhibits a lower activation energy of 1.21 eV compared to that on the face-centered cubic (fcc) Co(111) surface with an activation energy of 1.42 eV, despite that direct CO dissociation, CHO dissociation, and CHOH dissociation on CoO(200) show higher activation energies. This study provides a prime scientific understanding about regulating catalytic activity and methane selectivity.

Abstract:A new approach for elucidating reaction mechanism of complex reactions, such as Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) synthesis, is presented. It includes a combination of integrated transient and steady-state kinetic modeling, experimental and DFT investigations of kinetic isotopic effects. The integrated transient and steady-state modeling enable the determination of H2 and CO equilibrium constants and detailed mapping of surface species including surface concentrations and their reactivities. The predictive ability of Langmuir-Hinshelwood type kinetic models has been significantly improved by taking into account the effect of interaction between adsorbed CO on the CO adsorption. Together with DFT investigations of the kinetic isotopic effect, the dominating CO activation pathway through hydrogen-assisted CO dissociation has been confirmed. It led also to a clarification of two carbon pools namely CH2O* (Cα) and CHx * (Cβ) and two corresponding reaction pathways for methane formation. The prevailing reaction pathway for methane formation depends on the operating conditions. Hydrogen surface concentration is the key parameter determining the reactivity of adsorbed CO and the reaction pathways for methane formation. © 2013 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
The Vital Role of Step-Edge Sites for Both CO Activation and Chain Growth on Cobalt Fischer–Tropsch Catalysts Revealed through First-Principles-Based Microkinetic Modeling Including Lateral Interactions

Abstract:Microkinetic modeling is employed to predict catalytic turnover rates, product distributions, preferred mechanistic pathways, and rate- and selectivity-controlling elementary reaction steps for the Fischer-Tropsch (FT) reaction. We considered all relevant elementary reaction steps on Co(112̅1) step-edge and Co(0001) terrace sites as well as such important aspects as coverage-related lateral interactions, different chain-growth mechanisms, and the migration of adsorbed species between the two surfaces in the dual-site model. CHx–CHy coupling pathways relevant to the carbide mechanism have favorable barriers in comparison to the overall barriers for the CO insertion mechanism. A comparison of reaction barriers indicates why cobalt is such a good FT catalyst: CO bond scission and chain growth compete, while termination to olefins has a slightly higher barrier. The predicted kinetic parameters correspond well with experimental kinetic data. The Co(112̅1) model surface is highly active and selective for the FT reaction. Adding terrace Co(0001) sites in a dual-site model approach leads to a substantially higher CH4 selectivity at the expense of the C2+-hydrocarbons selectivity. The chain-growth probability decreases with increasing temperature and H2/CO ratio, caused by faster hydrogenation of the hydrocarbon chains. The elementary reaction steps for O removal and CO dissociation significantly control the overall CO consumption rate. Chain growth occurs almost exclusively at step-edge sites, while additional CH4 stems from CH and CH3 migration from step-edge to terrace sites. Replacing CO by CO2 as the reactant shifts the product distribution nearly completely to CH4, which is related to the much higher H/CO coverage ratio during CO2 hydrogenation in comparison to CO hydrogenation. These findings highlight the importance of a proper balance of CO and H surface species during the FT reaction and pinpoint step-edge sites as the locus of the FT reaction with low-reactive terrace sites near step-edge sites being the origin of unwanted CH4.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:For its unique position in chemical industry, Fischer-Tropsch (FT) synthesis has been a hot subject in heterogeneous catalysis. Due to its great complexity in product distribution, it remains unclear how to maximally convert syngas to long-chain hydrocarbons. By combining extensive DFT calculations with grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations, this work examines the key elementary steps in FT synthesis over Ru and Rh surfaces, including CO dissociation, C/C coupling, and hydrogenations. The origin of the relationship between activity and selectivity of catalysts is revealed based on the calculated reaction rate at working temperatures, in which the catalytic role of surface steps as the center of accumulating surface CH(x) species is highlighted. This theoretical work demonstrates that the ability to dissociate CO under carbon-rich conditions is the key requirement for a good FT catalyst. The RC + C (R = alkyl or H) pathway occurring at surface steps may be a general mechanism for FT chain propagation on transition metals.

Abstract:Abstract Facile C-C bond formation is essential to the formation of long hydrocarbon chains in Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. Various chain growth mechanisms have been proposed previously, but spectroscopic identification of surface intermediates involved in C-C bond formation is scarce. We here show that the high CO coverage typical of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis affects the reaction pathways of C 2 H x adsorbates on a Co(0001) model catalyst and promote C-C bond formation. In-situ high resolution x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy shows that a high CO coverage promotes transformation of C 2 H x adsorbates into the ethylidyne form, which subsequently dimerizes to 2-butyne. The observed reaction sequence provides a mechanistic explanation for CO-induced ethylene dimerization on supported cobalt catalysts. For Fischer-Tropsch synthesis we propose that C-C bond formation on the close-packed terraces of a cobalt nanoparticle occurs via methylidyne (CH) insertion into long chain alkylidyne intermediates, the latter being stabilized by the high surface coverage under reaction conditions.

Abstract:Co2C catalysts were found to be structure-sensitive during Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS), and reaction-induced Co2C nanoprisms exposing the (101) and (020) facets exhibited superior olefin selectivity, low methane selectivity, and high activity under mild conditions. Alkali metal promoters benefit the formation and stabilization of Co2C nanoprisms, although mechanistic understanding and theoretical support are lacking due to the great complexity of this catalytic reaction and the difficulty in characterizing the detailed structural changes. Here, density functional theory (DFT) calculations and ab initio atomistic thermodynamics simulations are combined to elucidate the "promoter–structure" relationship of Co2C catalysts decorated with different alkali metal promoters. Co- and C-terminated and stoichiometric low-index surfaces including (020), (101), (111), (011), and (110) are considered. Evolution of the equilibrium morphology versus K2O coverage (θK2O) and carbon chemical potential (μC) as determined by the temperature, pressure, and the H2/CO ratio are predicted. We find that increasing θK2O facilitates the preferential exposure of the (020) and (101) facets with different terminations at diverse μC, which are the active surfaces for Fischer–Tropsch to olefins (FTO). For θK2O = 1/6 ML, these two surfaces are predicted to cover 100, 53.4, and 48.4% of the exposed surface area at μC of −7.5, −8.5, and −9.5 eV, respectively, compared with 8.6, 18.3, 26.2% without this promoter. The dominant exposure of these two facets explains the experimentally observed structure of Co2C nanoprisms with a parallelepiped shape. Additionally, the promotional effect extends the preference of most Co- and C-terminated facets over stoichiometric facets to a larger range of μC. Furthermore, Na, K, and Rb promoters are predicted to have stronger effects than Li in stabilizing these two facets, which is also consistent with available experimental observations. Abstract:Fischer-Tropsch (FT) synthesis is one of the most complex catalyzed chemical reactions in which the chain-growth mechanism that leads to formation of long-chain hydrocarbons is not well understood yet. The present work provides deeper insight into the relation between the kinetics of the FT reaction on a silica-supported cobalt catalyst and the composition of the surface adsorbed layer. Cofeeding experiments of 12C3H6 with 13CO/H2 evidence that CH x surface intermediates are involved in chain growth and that chain growth is highly reversible. We present a model-based approach of steady-state isotopic transient kinetic analysis measurements at FT conditions involving hydrocarbon products containing up to five carbon atoms. Our data show that the rates of chain growth and chain decoupling are much higher than the rates of monomer formation and chain termination. An important corollary of the microkinetic model is that the fraction of free sites, which is mainly determined by CO pressure, has opposing effects on CO consumption rate and chain-growth probability. Lower CO pressure and more free sites leads to increased CO consumption rate but decreased chain-growth probability because of an increasing ratio of chain decoupling over chain growth. The preferred FT condition involves high CO pressure in which chain-growth probability is increased at the expense of the CO consumption rate.
