Abstract:Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) is the key step in converting syngas into clean fuels. Traditional supported catalysts for FTS are problematic because the active metal crystalline size is positively related to metal loading. Therefore, increasing active metal loading may reduce the cobalt time yield (CTY) since a high CTY is usually obtained when the Co size is 8 nm. Here, a ZIF-67 (Zeolitic imidazolate framework-67) with a MOF (Metal organic framework) structure is used as a precursor to prepare the catalyst with not only high cobalt loading (55.6 wt%) but also with a small cobalt crystal size (as small as 8.6 nm). Core-shell @SiO2-X catalysts with different SiO2 shell thicknesses were successfully prepared by coating different amounts of TEOS on the outer surface of to modify product selectivity. Compared with 40 wt% Co/SiO2 catalyst, core-shell @SiO2-X catalysts exhibited improved FTS performance. Furthermore, different gaseous hourly space velocities (GHSVs) were used to obtain CO conversion at similar levels to compare CTY and the turnover frequency (TOF). Among the catalysts, the @SiO2-1 catalyst, with its better mass transfer ability and suitable hydrophilic property, presented the highest TOF (9.75 × 10−3 s−1) and lowest CH4 selectivity (9.75%). In addition, heavy hydrocarbons were effectively suppressed with the increase in shell thickness due to the increased mass transfer resistance.

Abstract:Selective production of light olefins remains a great challenge in cobalt-catalyzed Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS). Understanding the nature of the active site and the structure–performance relationship can assist in the optimal design of more efficient catalysts to manipulate the product selectivity. In this work, on the basis of our previous experimental study, we performed a detailed computational study on the mechanisms of CO activation, methane formation, and C–C coupling on three cobalt phases, namely Co, Co2C, and Co3C, aiming at unraveling the intrinsic active site that determines the selectivity to light olefins in cobalt-catalyzed FTS reactions. The effective barrier difference was used as a descriptor to evaluate the catalytic selectivity. The structural and electronic properties were deeply analyzed to unveil the nature of the active site. Our results indicate that Co(111) favors the production of alkanes because both hydrogenation and CH2*–CH3* coupling have lower activation barriers. Co2C(111) has the highest selectivity toward CH4, which is attributed to its valley-type surface structure and strong binding energy for CH2* species, inhibiting the C−C coupling. Co3C(101) is beneficial for the production of light olefins by controlling C–C coupling, suppressing deep hydrogenation, and preventing methane formation, which originates from the synergistic effect between its ridge-type surface structure and the downward shift of the d band center. The reactions occurring at the Co/Co3C interface were also studied, and the results suggest that the electron accumulation at the interface prominently facilitates CO dissociation and benefits the formation and desorption of light olefins. Furthermore, we systematically compared the theoretical results in this work with our previous experimental results and discussed the effects of Mn promoter and CO coverage. This study provides theoretical guidance for the rational design of effective Co-based FTS catalysts to tune the FTS selectivity toward the desired light olefins.

Abstract:Highly dispersed Co nanoparticles with proper interaction with mesoporous support are benefit for the suppression of self-aggregation, which enhances its Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTs) activity. However, construct such Co based supported catalysts with high activity and stability in FTs by conventional mesoporous support, especially the common used mesoporous SiO2, has proven challenging due to their undesirable hydrothermal stability and poor reducibility. Herein, we developed a unique core@double-shell Co@SiO2@C structure with optimized interface of the mesoporous catalyst by introducing graphitic carbon layer which can weaken the interaction between metallic Co and silica. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images, together with Nitrogen adsorption-desorption characterization result, proved the well-defined core@double-shell structure of graphitic carbon modified catalyst. The Co@SiO2@C-2 material produced after optimizing the calcination temperature to 600°C process large surface area and pore volume, and show higher CO conversion (62.2%) and C5+ selectivity (62.2%) than Co3O4@SiO2 in a period of 100h. The significant improvement in the FTS performance of Co@SiO2@C is not only attributed to a good synergistic effect by a combination of the Co dispersion and reducibility. The unique core@double-shell structure with graphitic carbon modified interior pore-walls also contributes to the formation of heavy hydrocarbon, as well as the protecting with the metallic Co particles away from oxidation and aggregation.

Abstract:The use of supported Co-based catalysts is widespread in various catalytic reactions due to their unique structures. The structural sensitivity of these catalysts is closely linked to their particle size and crystal form. Consequently, comprehending the structure-activity relationship requires the development of well-defined Co-based catalysts. Herein, we employed a colloidal wet chemical process and a heterogeneous nucleation method to prepare well-defined Co-based catalysts supported by inert carbon nanospheres. The nanospheres’ surface possesses abundant functional groups that efficiently capture metal complexes and facilitate the nucleation and growth of CoO nanoparticles. By adjusting the Co source concentration, solvent molar ratio, and nucleation growth kinetics, we successfully prepared CoO/carbon sphere (CS) catalysts with different particle sizes and crystal forms. The influence of metallic face-centered cubic (fcc)-Co0 particle size in the range of 6.6–17.6 nm on the performance of Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS) using well-defined CoO/CS catalysts has been investigated. The result demonstrated that the turnover frequency (TOF) remained constant for CoO/CS catalysts with metallic fcc-Co0 particle size larger than 7.7 nm. However, both the selectivity and the activity changed for CoO/CS catalysts with smaller particles (< 7.7 nm). Significantly, when metallic fcc-Co0 particle size was reduced from 17.6 to 7.7 nm, the cobalt time yield increased to 6.7 µmolCO·gCo−1·s−1, indicating improved catalytic activity. At the same time, the CH4 selectivity decreased to 4.9

Abstract:The Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) has been studied for decades; however, it is very difficult to simultaneously obtain a high one-pass CO conversion and a high selectivity of long-chain (C5+) hydrocarbons. A layered CoMn/TiO2 catalyst is fabricated and used as an efficient catalyst in FTS. The unique layered structure of the CoMn/TiO2 catalyst effectively inhibits the agglomeration of Co nanoparticles and enhances the diffusion of the reactants and products in FTS. The catalyst exhibits superior activity, high C5+ selectivity, and excellent stability due to its unique multiple mesopores structure as well as high cobalt dispersion. Even at a nearly complete one-pass CO conversion (>95%), which is considered to be a very harsh condition in the FTS reaction, CoMn/TiO2 still exhibits a high C5+ hydrocarbon selectivity of around 93% and a very low selectivity of undesired Cl products (CH4 and CO2) of below 4.5%.

Abstract:Fischer–Tropsch synthesis over CoMn oxides is a surface-catalyzed structure-sensitive reaction. Active site changes greatly alter product distribution. The dynamics and essence of the changes in Co species during the reaction have seldom been explored. Herein, multiple characterizations were applied to confirm that two types of active sites, i.e., Co and Co2C, coexist on CoMnO x under the reaction conditions. Apart from the direct participation of carbon species in the reaction, the steady-state isotopic transient kinetic analysis also suggested the mutual transformation of carbon species in Co2C. The ratio of the two paths altered with the temperature, thus leading to Co2C-rich and Co-rich surfaces at intermediate and high temperatures, respectively. Kinetic calculations and microkinetic modeling showed that Co2C-rich surfaces facilitated CO adsorption and suppressed hydrogen adsorption. This gave high carbon-chain growth activity. The Co-rich surfaces showed high vacancy and hydrogen coverages, lowering the CO activation and CH4 formation energies.

Abstract:With the trend from fossil fuels demand to clean energy, studies in the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) have broadened its directions for synthesizing value-added chemicals, including olefins and oxygenates, on top of producing synthetic fuels. The FTS route provides an efficient way of synthesizing chemicals directly from small molecules (CO and H2) derived from carbon-containing resources and, more importantly, from biomass and CO2. The rich olefins synthesized by the FTS provide an alternative way from crude oil for the feedstocks of manufacturing high-value chemicals further. The study of chemical synthesis by the FTS has made remarkable progress in the past decade. Both Fe- and Co-based catalysts have been developed with various promoters and new morphology and structure. The selectivity to low-carbon olefins has reached more than 60%, with more than 95% of olefins in the carbon range of C2-C4. However, the emphasis on high selectivity to low-carbon olefins has also resulted in high CO2 selectivity (~40%), which causes low carbon efficiency and high CO2 emission. Notably, researchers have paid great attention to controlling CO2 selectivity with various strategies in the past few years. The discovery and understanding of the active phase, as well as the roles of the promoters in tuning the product selectivity, will be reviewed. The important work and the strategies for controlling CO2 selectivity will be analyzed and discussed to provide insights for lowering CO2 selectivity.

Abstract:Selectivity to olefins and CO2 is a pivotal factor reflecting economic and environmental efficiency of the syngas to olefins process (STO). Herein we demonstrate the intrinsic nature of the catalyst supports in STO. FeMgAl cat-alysts with controlled Mg/Al ratio derived from layered double hydroxides (LDHs) were prepared by a co -precipitation method. A series of in/ex situ spectroscopy (FTIR, AP-XPS, TP, PE and MES) were applied to reveal Mg/Al ratio affecting the adsorption/reactivity of CO and H2, the proportion of iron carbides (FeCx) and iron oxides (FeOx) was relating to the selectivity to lower olefins and CO2. The MgAl oxide supported Fe catalysts can balance (i) carbon chain growth probability vs. O/P and (ii) primary/secondary CO2 formation paths, to suppress the selectivity of CO2 to 28.2% with a C2-C4 olefin selectivity of 56.2%.

Abstract:While hydrocarbons production by Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) is widely recognized, commercial interest in FTS products is mainly constrained by oil prices. The FTS-derived fuels, although higher quality and greener, cannot currently compete with cheaper fossil fuels, motivating to shift the FTS products distribution to higher value-added chemicals, such as olefins-C5+. The high olefin selectivity in FTS over Co-based catalysts is usually ascribed to Co2C on the catalyst surface with its inherent deficiencies. This study demonstrates a novel approach to alter low-temperature FTS selectivity by applying off-gas recycling. At slow gas recycling rates, C19+ selectivity increases due to re-adsorption and re-incorporation into the growing chain of gaseous olefins from the off-gas. High-intensity gas recycling facilitates C5+ olefin vapors removal from the reactor by enhanced gas flow with their subsequent cut-off in the cold trap, thus reducing residence time of condensed olefins and probability of their secondary reactions.

Abstract:Fischer-Tropsch(F-T) synthesis continues to receive attention as an alternative for the production of ultra-clean transportation fuels and chemicals.The reduction performance of Co catalyst supported on alumina was investigated by XRD,TPR,XPS and H2-TPD.Catalyst can not be activated sufficiently at low temperature,and high reduction temperature may result in sintering of Co particles and decrease the active surface.So the optimum reduction temperature range was 400~500 ℃.The performance of the catalyst reduced at this temperature range is relatively excellent.

Abstract:Cobalt carbide (Co2C) possesses high catalytic efficiency Fischer‐Tropsch synthesis (FTS) while the products selectivity appears sensitive to crystallography geometry. Since the Anderson–Schulz–Flory (ASF) distribution in FTS was broken through fabricating facetted Co2C nanocrystals, yet the underlying mechanism of Co2C crystallization remains unclarified suffering from sophisticated catalyst composition involving promoter agents. Herein, we report the synthesis of high‐purity single‐crystal nanoprisms (Co2C‐p) for highly efficient FTS to lower olefins. Through comprehensive microstructure analysis, e.g. high‐resolution TEM, in situ TEM and electron diffraction, as well as finite element simulation of gas flow field, for the first time we disclosed the full roadmap of forming catalytic active cobalt carbides, starting from reduction of Co3O4 precursor to CoO intermediate, then carburization into Co2C‐s and subsequent ripening growth into Co2C‐p. This gas‐induced engineering of crystal phase provides a new synthesis strategy, with many new possibilities for precise design of metal‐based catalyst for diverse catalytic applications. Chemical Imaging of Carbide Formation and Its Effect on Alcohol Selectivity in Fischer Tropsch Synthesis on Mn-Doped Co/TiO2 Pellets

Abstract:X-ray diffraction/scattering computed tomography (XRS-CT) was used to create two-dimensional images, with 20 μm resolution, of passivated Co/TiO2/Mn Fischer-Tropsch catalyst extrudates postreaction after 300 h on stream under industrially relevant conditions. This combination of scattering techniques provided insights into both the spatial variation of the different cobalt phases and the influence that increasing Mn loading has on this. It also demonstrated the presence of a wax coating throughout the extrudate and its capacity to preserve the Co/Mn species in their state in the reactor. Correlating these findings with catalytic performance highlights the crucial phases and active sites within Fischer-Tropsch catalysts required for understanding the tunability of the product distribution between saturated hydrocarbons or oxygenate and olefin products. In particular, a Mn loading of 3 wt % led to an optimum equilibrium between the amount of hexagonal close-packed Co and Co2C phases resulting in maximum oxygenate selectivity. XRS-CT revealed Co2C to be located on the extrudates' periphery, while metallic Co phases were more prevalent toward the center, possibly due to a lower [CO] ratio there. Reduction at 450 °C of a 10 wt % Mn sample resulted in MnTiO3 formation, which inhibited carbide formation and alcohol selectivity. It is suggested that small MnO particles promote Co carburization by decreasing the CO dissociation barrier, and the Co2C phase promotes CO nondissociative adsorption leading to increased oxygenate selectivity. This study highlights the influence of Mn on the catalyst structure and function and the importance of studying catalysts under industrially relevant reaction times.
Insights into Hägg Iron-Carbide-Catalyzed Fischer–Tropsch Synthesis: Suppression of CH4 Formation and Enhancement of C–C Coupling on χ-Fe5C2 (510)

Abstract:Probing the product selectivity of Fischer-Tropsch catalysts is of prime scientific and industrial importance-with the aim to upgrade products and meet various end-use applications. In this work, the mechanisms for CH4 formation and C-1-C-1 coupling on a thermodynamically stable, terraced-like chi-Fe5C(2) (510) surface were studied by DFT calculations. It was found that this surface exhibits high effective barriers of CH4 formation for the three cases (i.e., 3.66, 2.81, and 2.39 eV), indicating the unfavorable occurrence of CH4 formation under FTS conditions. The C + CH and CH + CH are the most likely coupling pathways, which follow the carbide mechanism. Subsequently, the effective barrier difference between CH4 formation and C1-C1 coupling was used as a descriptor to quantify FTS selectivity. A comparison of the selectivity between this surface and the reported FTS catalysts surfaces was discussed in detail. More interestingly, this surface shows unexpectedly high C2+ selectivity. This indicates that manipulating the crystal facet of chi-Fe5C2 catalyst can effectively tune the FTS selectivity, which will open a new avenue for highly selective Fe-based FTS catalysts.
Strategic assembly of active phases on Co-Fe bimetallic catalysts for efficient Fischer-Tropsch synthesis

Abstract:In the realm of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS), the escalating cost of cobalt has spurred interest in Co-Fe bimetallic catalysts as substitutes for monometallic Co catalysts. Unfortunately, it is difficult to clarify specific functions and interactions of the two phases, as investigating catalysts in a unified dimension of both metal and support is still a challenge. Herein, we realize precise control over synthesizing nitrogen-doped carbon materials supported bimetallic catalysts containing CoFe alloy and Co + Fe 2 C dual active phases. The catalysts are comprehensively characterized to address the above problem by excluding the influence of metal sizes and support properties. Our findings reveal that compared to metallic Co alone and Co + Fe 2 C dual active phases, the Co-Fe interaction in CoFe alloy with electron transfer from Fe to Co optimizes reactant adsorption behaviors through achieving a larger number of strongly adsorbed CO per active site to increase the density of C* adsorbates and a higher surface CO/H 2 ratio to inhibit the hydrogenation of CH x * intermediates for chain termination, as well as an appropriate ability for CO adsorption/ dissociation. These advantages collectively enhance both CO activation and C-C coupling, and consequently, the CoFe/NC (CoFe alloy) catalyst exhibits the superior catalytic performance in the cobalt space–time yield in C 5+ products (3011.2 g C5+ kg Co −1 h −1 ), which surpasses the Co/NC (monometallic Co) and Co + Fe/NC (Co + Fe 2 C dual active phases) by 2.2 times and 2.4 times, respectively. This study serves as a promising route for the development of efficient and low-cost bimetallic catalysts through the strategic arrangement of multiple active phases for various reactions.

Abstract:Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) is a promising technology for converting renewable energy sources to synthetic liquid fuels, olefins or oxygenates. As one of the metal-based FTS catalysts with excellent intrinsic activity, supported Co-based catalysts have attracted much attention. Their properties depend on their geometric morphology, surface composition and metal-support interaction (MSI). This paper reviews the latest research progress of the supported Co-based catalysts for FTS, including recently-developed functional modification strategies to adjust the cobalt phase, crystallite size, metal dispersion, site density and metal-support interaction to optimize the performance of cobalt-based catalysts. The effects of important materials (including cobalt precursors, supports and promoters) on catalytic performance are discussed and compared. A summary is provided of the modifications made to catalysts with a unique and controllable structure, in order to improve the catalytic activity and focus the product distribution on targeted wax, gasoline, diesel, olefins and oxygenate products. Guidance is provided regarding controlling the structure and functions of Co-based catalysts. Opportunities and perspectives on future research into modification strategies used for Co-based FTS catalyst are also noted.

Inhibiting water-gas-shift reaction in the Fischer–Tropsch synthesis: Unraveling the roles of phase and facet over iron carbides

Abstract:An effective method, regulating the phase and facet of Fe x C y catalysts, is proposed in this study to adjust the catalytic performance of WGSR/FTS and thus affect CO 2 selectivity in the FTS reaction. The role of phase and facet over Fe x C y catalysts in regulating the reaction mechanisms and catalytic activity of WGSR/FTS in the FTS reaction are clearly unraveled. The results conclude that the local electronic environment of Fe atoms and the position of d -band center arisen from the phase and facet difference of Fe x C y play the determined role in the regulation of catalytic activity of WGSR/FTS over different Fe x C y catalysts. Among them, χ -Fe 5 C 2 (5 1 0) facet is screened out as the optimal catalyst to effectively inhibit CO 2 formation and to present excellent FTS activity under the FTS conditions. This study gives out a theoretical guide for the design of Fe x C y catalysts with the specific phase and facet to regulate the activity of FTS and WGSR and therefore greatly decrease CO 2 selectivity in the FTS reaction.

Abstract:Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS), which provides a green route to the production of clean fuels and fine chemicals, represents some significant applications of catalytic materials and processes in the chemical industry. FTS reactions show a diversity of mechanisms, involve various catalytic materials, and offer options for continuous investigation. Cobalt-based catalysts have been widely used for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis both in academia and in industry. This mini-review will focus on relevant research achievements in cobalt-based FTS catalysts by our group in the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics (DICP). Specific contents will include the development of Co/Co2C-based nano-catalysts (i) for the highly selective synthesis of clean fuels over Co-based catalysts supported by carbon materials and (ii) for the synthesis of linear α-alcohols and olefins over Co-Co2C-based catalysts supported by carbon materials. The direct synthesis of linear α-alcohols from syngas using a Co-Co2C/AC catalyst is highlighted. The innovative work of FTS using activated carbon (AC)-supported Co/Co2C-based nano-catalysts could bring some insight into new FTS catalyst designs.
Long-chain Α-Olefins Production over Co-MnOx Catalyst with Optimized Interface

Abstract:In this work, we report a carbon-mediated strategy to construct supported Co-MnOx nano-interfacial catalyst that enables highly selective synthesis of long-chain linear alpha-olefins (C-5+(=)) via the Fischer-Tropsch (FT) reaction. The co-impregnation of glucose as the carbon precursor and metal salt aqueous solution over SiO2 followed by pyrolysis and oxidation creates a catalyst with stable and rich Co-MnOx nano-interfaces after reduction and under FT conditions, which are convincingly revealed from characterizations of the catalysts at different stages. The optimal catalyst is stable for over 400 h without an observably decreased CO conversion, and the highest spacetime yield of C-5+(=) is achieved to be 0.79 g & sdot;gCo(-1)& sdot;h(-1), which are mainly originated from the suppressed sintering of metallic Co and favored CO adsorption/dissociation with a reasonably inhibited H-2 co-adsorption. The simple procedure and broad availability of precursors make our developed strategy a practically important surfaceengineering method capable of precisely fabricating stable nano-interfacial catalysts.
Co-Based Catalysts Supported on Silica and Carbon Materials: Effect of Support Property on Cobalt Species and Fischer–Tropsch Synthesis Performance

Abstract:The influence of different support surfaces and physical structures on cobalt species and catalytic Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS) performance has been investigated by using silica or mesoporous carbon as support. All the three catalysts Co/SBA-15, Co/SiO2, and Co/CMK-3 behaved differently in the FTS test and showed characteristic cobalt species. After calcination in argon, Co3O4 was prominent on both Co/SBA-15 and Co/SiO2 because of the stronger metal–support interaction. However, the weaker metal–support interaction on Co/CMK-3 coupled with the autoreduction of cobalt oxide facilitated the formation of more CoO on the support surface. On account of the higher reducibility and specific surface area, Co/SBA-15 exhibited higher CO conversion in FTS than another two as-synthesized catalysts. SBA-15 and CMK-3 possess well-ordered channel structure which favors mass transport and diffusion while diffusion inhibits hydrocarbon chain growth. The highest C5+ and C11–17 selectivities were observed over Co/SiO2 without regular channels, enabling enough intermediate residence time for carbon chain growth.
