Abstract:Floods, wildfires, heatwaves and droughts often result from a combination of interacting physical processes across multiple spatial and temporal scales. The combination of processes (climate drivers and hazards) leading to a significant impact is referred to as a ‘compound event’. Traditional risk assessment methods typically only consider one driver and/or hazard at a time, potentially leading to underestimation of risk, as the processes that cause extreme events often interact and are spatially and/or temporally dependent. Here we show how a better understanding of compound events may improve projections of potential high-impact events, and can provide a bridge between climate scientists, engineers, social scientists, impact modellers and decision-makers, who need to work closely together to understand these complex events.

Abstract:Abstract Compared to individual hot days/nights, compound hot extremes that combine daytime and nighttime heat are more impactful. However, past and future changes in compound hot extremes as well as their underlying drivers and societal impacts remain poorly understood. Here we show that during 1960–2012, significant increases in Northern Hemisphere average frequency (~1.03 days decade −1 ) and intensity (~0.28 °C decade −1 ) of summertime compound hot extremes arise primarily from summer-mean warming. The forcing of rising greenhouse gases (GHGs) is robustly detected and largely accounts for observed trends. Observationally-constrained projections suggest an approximate eightfold increase in hemispheric-average frequency and a threefold growth in intensity of summertime compound hot extremes by 2100 (relative to 2012), given uncurbed GHG emissions. Accordingly, end-of-century population exposure to compound hot extremes is projected to be four to eight times the 2010s level, dependent on demographic and climate scenarios.

Increasing Risks of Future Compound Climate Extremes With Warming Over Global Land Masses

Abstract:Compound climate extremes (here referred to compound dry–hot events and compound pluvial–hot events) result in devastating disasters which threaten water‐food‐energy security. However, in a warming scenario, the risk of occurrence, the quantification of uncertainty, and associated drivers of compound climate extremes—particularly compound pluvial–hot events—have not been fully explored. By leveraging climate model large ensembles, it is revealed that the risk of compound climate extremes is projected to increase 2–3 times over most global land masses in future Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 8.5 forcing compared with historical forcing. Increased risks of compound climate extremes are mainly attributed to the changes in temperature and changes in dependence between precipitation and temperature, while the change in precipitation contributing to risk of these two compound climate extremes exhibits approximately spatial complementary. In the warming world, the hot spots of compound dry–hot extremes mainly lie in Europe, South Africa, and the Amazon, while those of compound pluvial–hot extremes mostly lie in the eastern USA, eastern and southern Asia, Australia, and central Africa. These findings help stakeholders and decision makers develop a package of climate change adaptation strategies to manage and mitigate the risk of compound climate extremes.

Abstract:Compound hot-dry (CHD) and compound hot-wet (CHW) extremes have both intensified under global warming, posing exacerbated socio-economic threats compared to univariate extremes. This study presents a comprehensive assessment and comparison of the historical changes and driving factors behind CHD and CHW using observational data and climate model simulations. Findings indicate a notable surge in CHD and CHW occurrences, with CHW experiencing a higher increasing rate. Our investigation further reveals that anthropogenic climate change predominantly drives the increase in both types of compound extremes, especially for CHW. In contrast, land-atmosphere feedbacks have a limited impact on CHW at a global scale, but substantially contributes to the rise in CHD by reinforcing the negative precipitation-temperature coupling. This influence even surpasses that of anthropogenic climate change in specific regions. Understanding these variations and underlying causes is crucial for improving prediction accuracy and mitigating the impacts of compound extremes.

Abstract:The impacts of extreme events are seldom caused by a single climatic variable but rather arise from the interaction of multiple climate drivers. This study employs observational data sets with high spatiotemporal resolution to analyze the risk of occurrence of compound dry‐hot events in China over the past 120 years (i.e., 1901–2020). Simultaneously, attribution analysis based on distribution functions explores whether and to what extent human activities influence the occurrence of compound events. The results indicate that over the historical 120‐year period, the frequency of compound dry‐hot events in China has gradually increased, with the highest frequency observed in the most recent 40 years (i.e., 1981–2020). The frequency of compound dry‐hot events during this period is approximately four times that of 1901–1940 and about twice that of 1941–1980. The analysis of the relative importance of different factors reveals that temperature changes contribute more (56%) to the occurrence of compound events than precipitation (23%), and also exceed the interaction between them (21%). The substantial increase in compound dry‐hot events is largely attributed to the influence of human activities. Across seven sub‐regions, human activities have led to an increase in the probability of compound events occurring, ranging from 7.9% to 31.6%. The findings of this study indicate that human activities have significant implications for explaining the observed increase in compound hot and dry events over the past 40 years.

Abstract:Compound dry and hot events, the combination of high temperature and scarce rainfall, are receiving attention in recent times due to their devastating stress on ecosystems, agricultural production, and public health worldwide. Knowing the risk of compound dry and hot events, particularly for the severe ones on record, is essential for developing effective measures to mitigate the negative impacts. However, most of the existing investigations only focus on the long-term trend of compound dry and hot events during the past decades, and future changes in those record-breaking events remain sparsely reported, especially in China. With a focus on the typical severe compound dry and hot event over Southwest China in summer 2006, this study quantifies the future probability of such compound extreme under various emission and societal development scenarios. Results show that the compound dry and hot event in 2006 is the most severe during 1901–2020, with widespread spatial extent in Southwest China. The observed change in temperature plays a dominant role in the variation of compound severity. Based on Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 6 (CMIP6) multi-model simulations, we further show that the maximum ratio of the increase in the area affected by compound dry and hot events to that of 2006 is projected to be about twofold under the Shared Socioeconomic Pathway (SSP) 1–2.6 scenario in about 2040, while it would climb to nearly triple for the other two scenarios SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5 in about 2060 and 2050, respectively. These findings could provide a support for urgent adaptation and mitigation efforts against compound dry and hot events to mitigate the impact.

Climate change unevenly affects the dependence of multiple climate-related hazards in China

Abstract:Due to the complex natural environment and large regional differentiation in China, the dependence of multiple climate-related hazards on compound events (CEs) and their response to climate change are still unclear. Using daily meteorological observations (1961–2020) and climate simulations from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6, statistically strong dependences among hot, dry, and high fire risk are revealed in China. The average temperature from 1991 to 2020 was 1 °C higher than that from 1961 to 1990, and the probabilities of CEs exhibiting extreme hot-dry, dry-high fire risk, and extreme hot-dry-high fire risk increased significantly by 74.8%, 60.5%, and 26.8%, respectively. Although most CEs occur more frequently in China at the end of the 21st century, the increase rates in low emissions are lower. These findings have implications for developing climate adaptation and mitigation strategies to cope with increased CEs in critical geographical regions.

Abstract:Climate extremes threaten human health, economic stability, and the well-being of natural and built environments (e.g., 2003 European heat wave). As the world continues to warm, climate hazards are expected to increase in frequency and intensity. The impacts of extreme events will also be more severe due to the increased exposure (growing population and development) and vulnerability (aging infrastructure) of human settlements. Climate models attribute part of the projected increases in the intensity and frequency of natural disasters to anthropogenic emissions and changes in land use and land cover. Here, we review the impacts, historical and projected changes,and theoretical research gaps of key extreme events (heat waves, droughts, wildfires, precipitation, and flooding). We also highlight the need to improve our understanding of the dependence between individual and interrelated climate extremes because anthropogenic-induced warming increases the risk of not only individual climate extremes but also compound (co-occurring) and cascading hazards. ▪ Climate hazards are expected to increase in frequency and intensity in a warming world. ▪ Anthropogenic-induced warming increases the risk of compound and cascading hazards. ▪ We need to improve our understanding of causes and drivers of compound and cascading hazards.

Variations of Global Compound Temperature and Precipitation Events and Associated Population Exposure Projected by the CMIP6 Multi-Model Ensemble

Abstract:Compound climate events often pose greater harm to humans and society than single-variable climate issues. This study projects the temporal changes and spatial pattern evolution of four compound climate events (including warm–wet, warm–dry, cold–wet, and cold–dry) and the corresponding population exposure in global land under the shared socioeconomic pathway (SSP) 2–4.5 based on the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 6 simulations. Results show the following: (1) The warm–wet event is significantly decreasing at a rate of 0.06 days per decade, while the cold–wet event is significantly increasing at a rate of 0.06 days per decade. The warm–dry event and cold–dry event show an upward trend but are not significant. (2) All four types of compound events will undergo mutations in the next 80 years, with the warm–dry event having the highest frequency of mutations. (3) West Asia is a high-risk area for warm–dry and cold–wet events. Northern Africa is a hot spot area for the warm–wet event, while Brazil is a hot spot area for the cold–dry event. (4) Areas with exposure levels (population under four compound climate events) of medium or higher are mainly distributed in East Asia, South Asia, and central Africa. When the population exposure exceeds 105 person · day, the area of population exposure to compound events related to dry conditions is greater than that of compound events related to wet conditions. This study has guiding significance for understanding, identifying, analyzing, and preventing compound extreme climate events in the context of global warming.

Abstract:Human society and ecosystems are impacted by climate extremes more than by climate averages. In contrast with climate extremes that are driven by individual climatic variables, compound climate extremes stem from a combination of multiple climatic drivers and usually lead to more severe risks than the former extremes do. The influences of the drivers for compound climate extremes are strengthening under global warming. Firstly, this review details the development of the definition of compound climate extremes over recent years and describes different types of events, such as compound drought and heatwave extremes (CDHEs), compound day and night heat extremes (CDNHEs), and compound flooding (CF). Secondly, historical trends in compound climate extremes in China over the past half-century, and projections of future trends under different scenarios, are discussed. For example, this study points out that a large part of China has experienced longer, stronger, and more frequent CDHEs than other parts of the country. CDHEs have followed a significantly increasing trend since the 1990s, and this trend is projected to strengthen further under different scenarios in the future. Thirdly, this study reviews different potential causes for compound climate extremes, including the internal variability of the climate system (e.g., land and atmosphere feedbacks, large-scale circulation patterns) and external anthropogenic forcings (e.g., urbanization and anthropogenic emissions). In this study, we summarize risks from different perspectives by considering interactions between hazards, vulnerability, and exposure. Many studies show that risks to infrastructural damage and population exposure are projected to increase in the future, and that crop yields and ecosystem gross primary production are likely to reduce. Finally, we generalize our study and show that there is an urgent need for a comprehensive study of different combinations of compound events. We argue that it is important that we understand the key dynamic and thermal processes that are modulated by specific drivers and investigate the uncertainty in the projected variabilities for compound climate extremes. This requires interdisciplinary collaboration and will allow appropriate risk adaptation strategies to be developed. There has been great progress in research into compound climate extremes; however, an improved understanding of the mechanisms and risks is necessary as a theoretical basis for more effective climate adaptation policies.
Impact of compound events (heatwaves and ozone episodes) on mortality over the Mediterranean basin under climate change scenarios

Abstract:The Mediterranean Basin is nowadays considered as one of the most vulnerable areas worldwide to extreme climate/weather events, especially those related to photochemical pollution (tropospheric ozone) and extreme temperatures (e.g. heatwaves). Heatwaves and air pollution have a high impact on society, both from a health and an economical perspective, leading to increases on heat stroke hospital admissions and mortality. For this reason, heatwaves and their associated ozone pollution have to be taken into account for dwellers welfare.In addition, in recent years, it has become increasingly clear that climatic or meteorological impacts often result from the compounding nature of several variables and/or events, even if they are not extreme when analysed independently. Such compound events can lead to socio-economic damage exceeding that expected if the individual hazards were to occur separately. For instance, compound events of heat wave and stagnation display higher temperature than stagnation events or heat wave events alone, so the formation of secondary pollutants like tropospheric ozone is enhanced relative to individual events.Under this umbrella, this study assesses compound climate events using high-resolution regional chemistry/climate simulations, with the aim of characterizing and quantifying the influence of temperature/pollution compound events on mortality over Europe, with a special focus on the Mediterranean Basin. Model data from the REPAIR and ACEX projects (obtained from simulations with the on-line chemistry/coupled WRF-Chem model) is used in order to check the changes in mortality under both present-observed and future-forced conditions. The results presented in this contribution quantify the important increase in mortality causes associated to cerebrovascular diseases (CEV) and other pathologies during those compound events (especially under future climate change scenarios) with respect to episodes led by single drivers. This increase in mortality is more evident in northern countries in relative terms; and in southern European countries in absolute mortality incidence, since the concurrent presence of heatwaves and high levels of tropospheric ozone will have a higher frequency in future scenarios over the Mediterranean basin.

Abstract:Urban areas are experiencing strongly increasing hot temperature extremes. However, these urban heat events have seldom been the focus of traditional detection and attribution analysis designed for regional to global changes. Here we show that compound (day–night sustained) hot extremes are more dangerous than solely daytime or nighttime heat, especially to female and older urban residents. Urban compound hot extremes across eastern China have increased by 1.76 days per decade from 1961 to 2014 with fingerprints of urban expansion and anthropogenic emissions detected by a stepwise detection and attribution method. Their attributable fractions are estimated as 0.51 (urbanization), 1.63 (greenhouse gases) and −0.54 (other anthropogenic forcings) days per decade. Future emissions and urbanization would make these compound events two to five times more frequent (2090s versus 2010s), leading to a threefold-to-sixfold growth in urban population exposure. Our findings call for tailored adaptation planning against rapidly growing health threats from compound heat in cities.

Climate change determines future population exposure to summertime compound dry and hot events

Abstract:Compound dry and hot events (CDHEs) have increased significantly and caused agricultural losses and adverse impacts on human health. It is thus critical to investigate changes in CDHEs and exposure in responding to climate change. Based on the simulations of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6), future changes in CDHEs and population exposure are estimated under four Shared Socioeconomic Pathways climate scenarios (SSPs) at first. And then the driving forces behind these changes are analyzed and discussed. The results show that the occurrence of CDHEs is expected to increase by larger magnitudes by the end of the 21st century (the 2080s) than that by the mid‐21st century (2050s). Correspondingly, population exposure to CDHEs is expected to increase significantly responding to higher global warming (SSP3‐7.0 and SSP5‐8.5) but is limited to a relatively low level under the modest emission scenarios (SSP1‐2.6). Globally, compared to 1985‐2014, the exposure is expected to increase by 8.5 and 7.7 times under SSP3‐7.0 and SSP5‐8.5 scenarios by the 2080s, respectively. Regionally, Sahara has the largest increase in population exposure to CDHEs, followed by the Mediterranean, Northeast America, Central America, Africa, and Central Asia. The contribution of climate change to the increase of exposure is about 75% by the 2080s under the SSP5‐8.5 scenario, while that of population change is much lower. The conclusion highlights the importance and urgency of implementing mitigation strategies to alleviate the influence of CDHEs on human society.
The role of climate change and urban development on compound dry-hot extremes across US cities

Abstract:Abstract Compound dry-hot extreme (CDHE) events pose greater risks to the environment, society, and human health than their univariate counterparts. Here, we project decadal-length changes in the frequency and duration of CDHE events for major U.S. cities during the 21st century. Using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model coupled to an urban canopy parameterization, we find a considerable increase in the frequency and duration of future CDHE events across all U.S. major cities under the compound effect of high-intensity GHG- and urban development-induced warming. Our results indicate that while GHG-induced warming is the primary driver of the increased frequency and duration of CDHE events, urban development amplifies this effect and should not be neglected. Furthermore, We show that the highest frequency amplification of major CDHE events is expected for U.S. cities across the Great Plains South, Southwest, and the southern part of the Northwest National Climate Assessment regions.

Abstract:Abstract Compound events (CEs) are weather and climate events that result from multiple hazards or drivers with the potential to cause severe socio-economic impacts. Compared with isolated hazards, the multiple hazards/drivers associated with CEs can lead to higher economic losses and death tolls. Here, we provide the first analysis of multiple multivariate CEs potentially causing high-impact floods, droughts, and fires. Using observations and reanalysis data during 1980–2014, we analyse 27 hazard pairs and provide the first spatial estimates of their occurrences on the global scale. We identify hotspots of multivariate CEs including many socio-economically important regions such as North America, Russia and western Europe. We analyse the relative importance of different multivariate CEs in six continental regions to highlight CEs posing the highest risk. Our results provide initial guidance to assess the regional risk of CE events and an observationally-based dataset to aid evaluation of climate models for simulating multivariate CEs.

Abstract:Compound heat wave (CompoundHW), a specific extreme heat event sustains from daytime to nighttime, has adverse impact on human health and natural ecosystems. However, the analysis of temporal change and driving factors of spatial distributions of CompoundHW on a global scale is limited. In this study, the temporal and spatial variations of global CompoundHW were investigated based on three datasets. The effects of climatic factor, underlying surface factors (Dem, dominant vegetation type and albedo), climate change factors, and socioeconomic factors on the spatial distribution of raw, variability-contributed and warming-devoted CompoundHW severity were assessed using the Geodetector method. Results showed increasing trends in the days, frequency, cumulative heat and occurrence proportion of global average CompoundHW. Spatially, the middle and high latitudes of the North Hemisphere showed more intense CompoundHW and most regions exhibited increases in CompoundHW metrics in the second half of 1983–2012. The climatic factor exhibited highest effect on the spatial distribution of CompoundHW metrics, followed by dominant vegetation type and climate change factors, with the corresponding explanatory power about 60%, 20% and 10%. The socioeconomic factors showed the lowest effects, but enhanced effects when interacting with other factors. The climate change factors showed higher effect on the spatial pattern of warming-devoted CompoundHW than variability-contributed CompouondHW, with explanatory power of 30% and less than 10% respectively. Additionally, the climatic factor and climate change factors played comparable strength in influencing the spatial differences of warming-devoted CompoundHW metrics. This work helps the regionalized development of adaptation and mitigation methods by outlining the characteristics and factors that influence the spatial distribution of global CompoundHW.

Compounding effects in flood drivers challenge estimates of extreme river floods

Abstract:Estimating river flood risks under climate change is challenging, largely due to the interacting and combined influences of various flood-generating drivers. However, a more detailed quantitative analysis of such compounding effects and the implications of their interplay remains underexplored on a large scale. Here, we use explainable machine learning to disentangle compounding effects between drivers and quantify their importance for different flood magnitudes across thousands of catchments worldwide. Our findings demonstrate the ubiquity of compounding effects in many floods. Their importance often increases with flood magnitude, but the strength of this increase varies on the basis of catchment conditions. Traditional flood analysis might underestimate extreme flood hazards in catchments where the contribution of compounding effects strongly varies with flood magnitude. Overall, our study highlights the need to carefully incorporate compounding effects in flood risk assessment to improve estimates of extreme floods.

Abstract:Global warming accelerates the rate of interregional hydrological cycles, thus leading to a significant increase in the frequency and intensity of global extreme events. An extreme event that causes other extreme events within a short period of time is a successive event. Compound and successive extreme events are more harmful than single extreme events. Therefore, this study revealed the evolution characteristics of compound heatwave and extreme precipitation/ runoff events (CHP/CHR), successive heatwave and extreme precipitation/runoff events (SHP/SHR). The population exposure of the four compound events was assessed in the future. The results are as follows: (1) the frequencies of CHP, CHR, SHP, and SHR have all shown a significant upward trend since the Industrial Revolution, especially at low and high latitudes. Under the future SSP585 scenario, CHP and CHR had the largest change rates from 2065 to 2099 at 2.01 events/decade and 1.86 events/decade, respectively. (2) The proportion of severe and extreme events increased significantly in various regions from 1970 to 2014. SHP and SHR have the largest proportion of severe/extreme events in 2015-2039/2065-2099. (3) The CHP and CHR changes in the historical period mainly occurred at high latitudes, while SHP and SHR had the largest change rates in low latitudes. The temperature was dominant compound and successive events in the future. The intensity of the compound event was much larger than that of its corresponding successive event under the high-emission scenario. (4) Climate effect had the most obvious impact on the change of population exposure. Compared with the SSP126 scenario, the population exposure change of the compound event increased by 3.1 times and 3.2 times under the SSP585 scenario during 2065-2099 and 2015-2039, respectively.
Spatial-temporal variations and drivers of the compound dry-hot event in China

Abstract:Compound extremes such as compound dry-hot events (CDHEs) have received more attention in the last decade due to their more devastating impacts than those caused by droughts or heatwaves separately. A daily-resolution CDHE index, i.e., compound dry-hot index daily (CDHId), based on the copula and conditional probability is proposed to identify dry and hot days to quantify the CDHE severity. Standardized precipitation index (SPI), standardized temperature index (STI), and CDHId are used to explore the spatial-temporal variations of droughts, heatwaves, and CDHEs in China from 1961 to 2020. Results show that CDHEs occurred more frequently after the period from the late 1970s to the early 1980s. Northeast China, Southwest China, and the Tibetan Plateau witnessed the most significant increases in CDHEs. CDHEs are further classified into two types based on the sequential order of the drought and heatwave occurrence, and the drought-preceded CDHEs accounted for 85.2% of all events, indicating that CDHEs were more likely to be induced by antecedent dry conditions. Stronger land-atmosphere coupling was observed both prior to and during CDHEs compared to periods under non-dry-hot conditions, which played a major role in the formation of CDHE at the local and short-time scale. However, the annual variation of CDHE frequency in multi-decades was dominated by heatwaves, with a more significant direct path coefficient than droughts over China. Overall, the increase and enhancement of CDHEs since the early 1980s were consistent with global warming.
