Abstract:Increasing atmospheric CO2 concentration, on the one hand, can stimulate plant photosynthesis and thus increase vegetation productivity through its "fertilization" effects but, on the other hand, can increase droughts and thus decrease vegetation productivity by rising atmospheric water demand through its "radiative" effects. Using projection data, we indicate that the current increase in vegetation productivity driven by CO2 fertilization effects may be reversed by worsening droughts. This will result in more CO2 being released into the atmosphere, further accelerating global warming.
Increasing Risks of Future Compound Climate Extremes With Warming Over Global Land Masses

Abstract:Compound climate extremes (here referred to compound dry–hot events and compound pluvial–hot events) result in devastating disasters which threaten water‐food‐energy security. However, in a warming scenario, the risk of occurrence, the quantification of uncertainty, and associated drivers of compound climate extremes—particularly compound pluvial–hot events—have not been fully explored. By leveraging climate model large ensembles, it is revealed that the risk of compound climate extremes is projected to increase 2–3 times over most global land masses in future Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 8.5 forcing compared with historical forcing. Increased risks of compound climate extremes are mainly attributed to the changes in temperature and changes in dependence between precipitation and temperature, while the change in precipitation contributing to risk of these two compound climate extremes exhibits approximately spatial complementary. In the warming world, the hot spots of compound dry–hot extremes mainly lie in Europe, South Africa, and the Amazon, while those of compound pluvial–hot extremes mostly lie in the eastern USA, eastern and southern Asia, Australia, and central Africa. These findings help stakeholders and decision makers develop a package of climate change adaptation strategies to manage and mitigate the risk of compound climate extremes.

Abstract:Many studies have shown that greenhouse gas (GHG)-induced global warming may lead to increased surface aridity and more droughts in the twenty-first century due to decreased precipitation in the subtropics and increased evaporative demand associated with higher vapor pressure deficit under warmer temperatures. Some recent studies argue that increased water use efficiency by plants under elevated CO2 may reduce the evaporative demand and therefore mitigate the drying. Here we first discuss the model-projected changes in precipitation amount and frequency that affect the surface water balance and aridity and then the changes in actual and potential evapotranspiration under GHG-induced warming. The effects of the GHG-induced warming and changes in plants’ physiology under elevated CO2 on precipitation, soil moisture, and runoff are quantified and compared by analyzing different model experiments with and without the physiologic response. The surface drying effect of GHG-induced warming is found to dominate over the wetting effect of plants’ physiology in response to increasing CO2, leading to similar surface drying patterns in climate model simulations with or without the physiologic response in the twenty-first century. Part of the drying comes from increased dry spells (i.e., more dry days) and a flattening of the histograms of drought indices as GHGs increase, with the latter leading to widespread increases in hydrological drought even over areas with increasing mean runoff. Because of this, the change pattern of the mean cannot be used to represent drought changes. Consistent with the projected drying in the twenty-first century, recent analyses of model experiments suggest wetter land surfaces during the last glacial maximum, which implies that dusty air during cold glacial periods may have resulted from other factors, such as stronger winds and more dust sources, rather than drier land surfaces. Finally, the drying in the subtropics does not appear to be just a transient response to increased GHGs, as the warming and precipitation change patterns do not vary significantly over time in 500-year simulations with increased CO2 contents by a fully coupled climate model.

Abstract:Compound drought and heat events (CDHEs), which are frequently occurring compound extreme climate events, have garnered considerable attention because of their detrimental effects on ecosystems. However, the intricacies of the spatial and temporal distributions of different durations of compound events, along with the variability in vegetation responses remain unclear. Here, we delineated the CDHEs based on meteorological observation data and investigated the spatial and temporal characteristics of CDHEs from 1993 to 2020 using the Theil-Sen trend test and Mann-Kendall nonparametric test. Furthermore, we utilized sliding correlation analysis to evaluate the impacts of CDHEs on vegetation among different climatic regions and ecosystems. Our findings indicate significant increasing trends in both the frequency and persistence of CDHEs from 1993 to 2020. The average trend of CDHEs frequency across different duration periods amounted to 13.80 %/decade. The fractional contribution of CDHEs lasting more than three days exhibited a significant increase, with an average trend of 2.00 %/decade. We also observed that vegetation is most significantly affected by compound events lasting 5-9 days. During the study period, the geographical extent of vegetation significantly impacted by CDHEs expanded by 0.89 %, correlation strength increased by 0.02, and lag time decreased by 0.25 months. These insights highlight the growing impact of CDHEs on vegetation under climate change, improving our understanding of vegetation responses to these compound events.

Abstract:Climate extremes, such as droughts and hot events, are expected to become more frequent and intense as the Earth's climate continues to change. Indeed, they will likely pose increasingly serious threats to both humanity and the sustainability of natural ecosystems. Compound climate extremes may significantly impact regions sensitive to climate change, such as the Tibetan Plateau (TP), although there is currently a notable lack of research on compound extreme drought and hot events (CEDHs) that affect this region. We employed the copula model using the standardized precipitation index (SPI), standardized temperature index (STI), and standardized soil moisture index (SSMI) to explore patterns of changes in CEDHs and assess the risk of soil water scarcity under CEDHs. Our results showed that the probability of CEDHs increased significantly across the TP over time, mainly due to hot events becoming more common. The conditional probability of soil water scarcity (SSMI < -0.8) under moderate CEDHs (defined as SPI 0.8) increased by 81.8% and 21.4% over time compared with those under individual hot and dry conditions, respectively. Our findings have important implications for mitigating the impacts of CEDHs under future global warming scenarios.

Abstract:Compound dry and hot events, the combination of high temperature and scarce rainfall, are receiving attention in recent times due to their devastating stress on ecosystems, agricultural production, and public health worldwide. Knowing the risk of compound dry and hot events, particularly for the severe ones on record, is essential for developing effective measures to mitigate the negative impacts. However, most of the existing investigations only focus on the long-term trend of compound dry and hot events during the past decades, and future changes in those record-breaking events remain sparsely reported, especially in China. With a focus on the typical severe compound dry and hot event over Southwest China in summer 2006, this study quantifies the future probability of such compound extreme under various emission and societal development scenarios. Results show that the compound dry and hot event in 2006 is the most severe during 1901–2020, with widespread spatial extent in Southwest China. The observed change in temperature plays a dominant role in the variation of compound severity. Based on Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 6 (CMIP6) multi-model simulations, we further show that the maximum ratio of the increase in the area affected by compound dry and hot events to that of 2006 is projected to be about twofold under the Shared Socioeconomic Pathway (SSP) 1–2.6 scenario in about 2040, while it would climb to nearly triple for the other two scenarios SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5 in about 2060 and 2050, respectively. These findings could provide a support for urgent adaptation and mitigation efforts against compound dry and hot events to mitigate the impact.

Abstract:Compound drought and heatwave (CDHW) events have garnered increased attention due to their significant impacts on agriculture, energy, water resources, and ecosystems. We quantify the projected future shifts in CDHW characteristics (such as frequency, duration, and severity) due to continued anthropogenic warming relative to the baseline recent observed period (1982 to 2019). We combine weekly drought and heatwave information for 26 climate divisions across the globe, employing historical and projected model output from eight Coupled Model Intercomparison Project 6 GCMs and three Shared Socioeconomic Pathways. Statistically significant trends are revealed in the CDHW characteristics for both recent observed and model simulated future period (2020 to 2099). East Africa, North Australia, East North America, Central Asia, Central Europe, and Southeastern South America show the greatest increase in frequency through the late 21st century. The Southern Hemisphere displays a greater projected increase in CDHW occurrence, while the Northern Hemisphere displays a greater increase in CDHW severity. Regional warmings play a significant role in CDHW changes in most regions. These findings have implications for minimizing the impacts of extreme events and developing adaptation and mitigation policies to cope with increased risk on water, energy, and food sectors in critical geographical regions.
Serious underestimation of reduced carbon uptake due to vegetation compound droughts

Abstract:Compound droughts with low soil moisture (SM) and high vapor pressure deficit (VPD) pose significant threats to terrestrial carbon sink and agricultural production. However, the frequency and intensity of compound droughts and their adverse impacts on the carbon cycle remain highly uncertain. Here, we define and identify vegetation compound droughts (VCDs) when low SM and high VPD severely limit and adversely affect vegetation carbon uptake. We find frequent and severe VCDs and their considerable adverse impacts on carbon uptake in mid- and low-latitude regions, particularly in drylands. Risks of VCDs have been greatly underestimated as the widely adopted quantile-based approach identifies only 11% of VCDs and 26% of global GPP anomalies due to VCDs. The frequency and intensity of VCDs and their adverse impacts on carbon uptake are projected to increase further, irrespective of whether the CO 2 fertilization effect on vegetation growth and photosynthesis is considered or not. These findings improve our understanding of current and future risks of VCDs and underline the importance of adaptation measures to cope with the adverse impacts of ever-increasing compound droughts.

Abstract:Under global warming, extreme events have been increasing in the last decade and are projected to increase in the future with every increment of global warming. The potential increase in compound drought and hot events may induce a complex web of impacts on societies, ecosystems, and economies, including crop failure, wildfires, and water scarcity. This is particularly concerning for Brazil, where it has been demonstrated to be vulnerable to recent extreme climate events. Using an ensemble of CORDEX-CORE simulations over Tropical Brazil, we investigate changes in compound events in response to changes in radiative forcing and their impact on climate extreme events, including drought and extreme heat. The simulations are conducted at a 25 km horizontal grid spacing using lateral and lower boundary forcing from three Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) climate models. Each model covers the period from 1980 to 2100 under two Radiative Concentration Pathways (RCP2.6 and RCP8.5) in the 21st-century projection period. We used observed data from the Brazilian Daily Weather Gridded Data (BR-DWGD) to evaluate the simulations and perform a quantitative assessment of areas affected by these compound events during the present day. The study finds a generally good agreement between RCM simulations and observed data, with moderate to high correlation coefficients for precipitation, though the strength of these correlations varies across different regions and seasons. The analysis emphasizes the prevalence of compound climate events during the Austral summer season and projects a significant increase in both extreme heat and drought events in the coming decades. These findings underscore Brazil's vulnerability to compound climate events, highlighting the need for adaptive strategies and policy interventions to mitigate the socio-economic and environmental impacts across various sectors.

Abstract:In the context of increasingly frequent and severe climate extremes, an understanding of the impacts of these events on gross primary production (GPP) and thus on land carbon uptake is crucial. However, research utilizing new model outputs to assess the future trends, characteristics, and driving factors of GPP reduction associated with extreme events remains limited. Here, we use model outputs from Phase Six of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) to investigate the spatiotemporal patterns of negative GPP extreme events during the 21st century. We find a notable increase in negative GPP extremes globally under the SSP5‐8.5 scenario. They are characterized by longer durations and larger sizes, despite the smaller number of events. Under the SSP1‐2.6 scenario, while the total negative GPP extremes remain relatively stable, hotspots, including tropical forests, southern China, and boreal forest zones, still experience increases in negative extremes. By attributing these GPP extremes to climate conditions, we identified compound hot and dry conditions, which contributed to over 40% of the negative GPP extremes under both scenarios, as the dominant driver, followed by single‐driver dry conditions. Under SSP5‐8.5, the increasing contribution of compound hot and dry conditions leads to greater GPP reductions through prolonged and intensified negative extreme events. Compared with CMIP5 models, CMIP6 models project an asymmetry of negative and positive GPP extreme events that favors more negative extremes across most regions. Our findings highlight the escalating damage from climate extremes on future ecosystem productivity, emphasizing the urgent need for effective mitigation and adaptation actions.

Abstract:Compound extreme events pose more grave threats to human health, the natural environment, and socioeconomic systems than do individual extreme events. However, the drivers and spatiotemporal change characteristics of compound extreme events under climate transition remain poorly understood, especially in the arid region of Northwest China. This study examined the spatiotemporal change characteristics and driving mechanisms of extreme temperature and precipitation compound events in Northwest China based on data from 86 national meteorological stations and 11 climate models of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project, Phase 6. The results indicated that (1) the frequency values of heat extremity–dry (1.60/10a) and heat extremity–heavy precipitation (0.60/10a) events increased from 1961 to 2020, and showed a faster uptrend after 1990 than before. (2) Under four shared socioeconomic pathway scenarios, there is also the likelihood of an upward trend in heat extremity–dry and heat extremity–heavy precipitation events in Northwest China by the end of 21 century, especially under SSP585, with probability values of 1.70/10a and 1.00/10a, respectively. (3) A soil moisture deficit leads to decreased evaporation and increased sensible heat by reduction in the soil–atmosphere exchange; the non-adiabatic heating process leads to a higher frequency of hot days. This land–air interaction feedback mechanism is a significant driver of heat extremity–dry events in Northwest China. (4) In the Northwest China region, the warmer trend surpasses the wetter trend, contributing to increased specific humidity, and the vapor pressure deficit may lead to an increasing frequency of extreme precipitation, consequently increasing heat extremity–heavy precipitation events. These results provide new insights for the understanding of compound extreme events, in order to cope with their risks.

Projected Increases in Global Terrestrial Net Primary Productivity Loss Caused by Drought under Climate Change

Abstract:Abstract Understanding present and future impacts of drought on the terrestrial carbon budget is of great significance to the evaluation of terrestrial ecosystem disturbance and terrestrial carbon sink. Here, we evaluate the effect of vegetation net primary productivity (NPP) associated with drought through the difference between the mean NPP in the drought and normal years during a specific time period (30 years). Then, the NPP effects in different vegetation types and climatic zones under baseline stage (1981–2010) and future climate scenarios (RCP2.6, RCP4.5, and RCP8.5) is assessed. The results indicate that the negative NPP extremes are captured in most regions, except for the high‐latitude in the Northern Hemisphere. The NPP loss caused by extreme droughts in 2071–2100 is largest under RCPs, followed by the effects of severe and moderate droughts. Regionally, central United States, southern Africa, central Asia, India, Amazon tropical rainforest, and Australia are projected to experience a significant increase in negative NPP extremes and most of these regions are in arid and semi‐arid and tropical rain forest areas. In contrast, tropical Asia suffers little drought effects. For different vegetation, Evergreen Broadleaf Forest, Closed Shrubland, Open Shrubland, Croplands, and Grassland are the most affected by drought. The largest NPP loss occurs in most part of regions under RCP4.5 scenario, not RCP8.5. Climate change is projected to play the largest role in aggravating the risk of drought‐induced NPP reduction. And meanwhile, the adverse effects of drought on vegetation may be resisted through rational fertilizer utilization and land management in future.
Increased occurrence of high impact compound events under climate change

Abstract:Abstract While compound weather and climate events (CEs) can lead to significant socioeconomic consequences, their response to climate change is mostly unexplored. We report the first multi-model assessment of future changes in return periods for the co-occurrence of heatwaves and drought, and extreme winds and precipitation based on the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) and three emission scenarios. Extreme winds and precipitation CEs occur more frequently in many regions, particularly under higher emissions. Heatwaves and drought occur more frequently everywhere under all emission scenarios examined. For each CMIP6 model, we derive a skill score for simulating CEs. Models with higher skill in simulating historical CEs project smaller increases in the number of heatwaves and drought in Eurasia, but larger numbers of strong winds and heavy precipitation CEs everywhere for all emission scenarios. This result is partly masked if the whole CMIP6 ensemble is used, pointing to the considerable value in further improvements in climate models.

Abstract:Compound hot-dry (CHD) and compound hot-wet (CHW) extremes have both intensified under global warming, posing exacerbated socio-economic threats compared to univariate extremes. This study presents a comprehensive assessment and comparison of the historical changes and driving factors behind CHD and CHW using observational data and climate model simulations. Findings indicate a notable surge in CHD and CHW occurrences, with CHW experiencing a higher increasing rate. Our investigation further reveals that anthropogenic climate change predominantly drives the increase in both types of compound extremes, especially for CHW. In contrast, land-atmosphere feedbacks have a limited impact on CHW at a global scale, but substantially contributes to the rise in CHD by reinforcing the negative precipitation-temperature coupling. This influence even surpasses that of anthropogenic climate change in specific regions. Understanding these variations and underlying causes is crucial for improving prediction accuracy and mitigating the impacts of compound extremes.

Abstract:Compound wind and precipitation extremes (CWPEs) can severely impact natural and socioeconomic systems. However, our understanding of CWPE future changes, drivers, and uncertainties under a warmer climate is limited. Here, by analyzing the event both on oceans and landmasses via state‐of‐the‐art climate model simulations, we reveal a poleward shift of CWPE occurrences by the late 21st century, with notable increases at latitudes exceeding 50° in both hemispheres and decreases in the subtropics around 25°. CWPE intensification occurs across approximately 90% of global landmasses, and is most pronounced under a high‐emission scenario. Most changes in CWPE frequency and intensity (about 70% and 80%, respectively) stem from changes in precipitation extremes. We further identify large uncertainties in CWPE changes, which can be understood at the regional level by considering climate model differences in trends of CWPE drivers. These results provide insights into understanding CWPE changes under a warmer climate, aiding robust regional adaptation strategy development.

Abstract:Global warming has intensified the intensity of compound drought‐hot extremes (CDHEs), posing more severe impacts on human societies and ecosystems than individual extremes. The vulnerability of global terrestrial ecosystems under CDHEs, along with its key influencing factors, remains poorly understood. Based on multiple remote sensing data, we construct a Vine Copula model to appraise vegetation vulnerability under CDHEs, and attribute it to climatic and biotic factors for five different vegetation types. High vulnerability is detected in central and southern regions of North America, eastern and southern regions of South America, Southern Africa, northern and western Europe, and northern and eastern Australia. The drier the climate, the higher will be the vulnerability. Furthermore, biodiversity and biomass are key biotic factors influencing the vulnerability of various vegetation types, such that ecosystems with richer biodiversity and higher biomass have lower vulnerability to CDHEs. The findings deepen understanding of terrestrial ecosystem response to CDHEs.

Abstract:Global warming accelerates the rate of interregional hydrological cycles, thus leading to a significant increase in the frequency and intensity of global extreme events. An extreme event that causes other extreme events within a short period of time is a successive event. Compound and successive extreme events are more harmful than single extreme events. Therefore, this study revealed the evolution characteristics of compound heatwave and extreme precipitation/ runoff events (CHP/CHR), successive heatwave and extreme precipitation/runoff events (SHP/SHR). The population exposure of the four compound events was assessed in the future. The results are as follows: (1) the frequencies of CHP, CHR, SHP, and SHR have all shown a significant upward trend since the Industrial Revolution, especially at low and high latitudes. Under the future SSP585 scenario, CHP and CHR had the largest change rates from 2065 to 2099 at 2.01 events/decade and 1.86 events/decade, respectively. (2) The proportion of severe and extreme events increased significantly in various regions from 1970 to 2014. SHP and SHR have the largest proportion of severe/extreme events in 2015-2039/2065-2099. (3) The CHP and CHR changes in the historical period mainly occurred at high latitudes, while SHP and SHR had the largest change rates in low latitudes. The temperature was dominant compound and successive events in the future. The intensity of the compound event was much larger than that of its corresponding successive event under the high-emission scenario. (4) Climate effect had the most obvious impact on the change of population exposure. Compared with the SSP126 scenario, the population exposure change of the compound event increased by 3.1 times and 3.2 times under the SSP585 scenario during 2065-2099 and 2015-2039, respectively.

Abstract:Climate change is expected to increase the global occurrence and intensity of heatwaves, extreme precipitation, and flash droughts. However, it is not well understood how the compound heatwave, extreme precipitation, and flash drought events will likely change, and how global population, agriculture, and forest will likely be exposed to these compound events under future climate change scenarios. This research uses eight CMIP6 climate models to assess the current and future global compound climate extreme events, as well as population, agriculture, and forestry exposures to these events, under two climate scenarios, Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSP), SSP1‐2.6 and SSP5‐8.5 for three time periods: early‐, mid‐, and late‐ 21st century. Climate extremes are derived for heatwaves, extreme precipitation, and flash droughts using locational‐dependent thresholds. We find that compound heatwaves and flash drought events result in the largest increases in exposure of populations, agriculture, and forest lands, under SSP5‐8.5 late‐century projections of sequential heatwaves and flash droughts. Late‐century projections of sequential heatwaves and flash droughts show hot spots of exposure increases in population exposure greater than 50 million person‐events in China, India, and Europe; increases in agriculture land exposures greater than 90 thousand km2‐events in China, South America, and Oceania; and increase in forest land exposure greater than 120 thousand km2‐events in Oceania and South America regions when compared to the historical period. The findings from this study can be potentially useful for informing global climate adaptations.

Abstract:Abstract. Anthropogenic warming is reported to increase global drought for the 21st century when calculated using offline drought indices. However, this contradicts observations of greening and little systematic change in runoff over the past few decades and climate projections of future greening with slight increases in global runoff for the coming century. This calls into question the drought projections based on offline drought indices. To resolve this paradox, here we calculate a widely-used conventional drought index (i.e., the Palmer Drought Severity Index, PDSI) using direct outputs from 16 CMIP5 models (PDSI_CMIP5) such that the hydrologic consistency between PDSI_CMIP5 and CMIP5 models is maintained. Results show that the global PDSI_CMIP5 remains generally unchanged as climate warms, demonstrating that CMIP5 models do not actually project a general increase in PDSI drought (more reflecting soil moisture/agricultural drought) under future warming. Further analyses indicate that the projected increase in PDSI drought reported previously is primarily due to ignoring the vegetation response to elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration ([CO2]) in the offline calculations. On one hand, elevated [CO2] directly reduces stomatal opening; on the other hand, elevated [CO2] increases air temperature and thus vapor pressure deficit, which also causes partial stomatal closure. Finally, we show that the overestimation of PDSI drought can be avoided by directly using the relevant climate model outputs or by accounting for the effect of CO2 on evapotranspiration. Our findings refute the common warming leads to drying perception and highlight the importance of elevated CO2 in controlling future terrestrial hydrologic changes through vegetation responses.
Characteristic changes in compound drought and heatwave events under climate change

Abstract:Compound drought and heatwave events (CDHWs) have severe impacts on both humans and ecosystems, and climate change is gradually increasing their frequency. Therefore, it is crucial to deeply analyze the relative impacts of droughts, heatwaves, and their coupling in CDHWs to better understand the extent to which individual events and their interactions contribute to CDHWs formation. The analysis of Earth System Models (ESMs) simulations indicates that the frequency and intensity of CDHWs increased significantly during the historical period (1941–2014), showing a notable rise after 1990 and remaining in a state of high fluctuation. Their total frequency and cumulative heat reveal a decreasing trend after reaching their maximum in the middle of the 21st century, with the greatest rate of decline occurring in the SSP585 scenario. Furthermore, the duration of each CDHWs occurrence will continue to increase, particularly for the SSP370 and SSP585 scenarios, which have a maximum value exceeding 18 days. The intensity of these events is expected to continue to increase in the future. The relative contribution of heatwaves to CDHWs averages above 40%, which is the dominant contribution. This can rise to 80% in some areas in the SSP585 scenario, while the relative contribution of droughts to CDHWs is only about half that of heatwaves. Nonetheless, the relative contribution of drought-heatwave coupling effects to CDHWs should not be overlooked, particularly in North Asia and North Africa, where the contribution is more pronounced. In addition, the results of the ESMs analyses indicate that the likelihood of drought and heatwave occurrence is significantly higher under anthropogenic disturbances, and that the coupling effect between them is stronger. This trend is generalized to all regions of the globe and is particularly evident in drylands. Attribution analyses indicate that anthropogenic forcing is the primary cause of the increases in CDHWs. The above findings emphasize that we are facing a serious threat from CDHWs and should take timely action to address the impacts of climate change.
