Abstract:ZnO and its nanocomposites have been received good progresses in new energy, photocatalysts, environmental fields. However, to enhance the visible light activity of ZnO is still a great challenge. Among so many methods of modifying ZnO, carbon-doping or nanocomposite with carbon nanomaterials are simple and effective approaches. In this study, low-dimensional carbon nanomaterials were synthesized with biomass waste (such as com straw) referring to the method of chemical synthesis of graphene oxide. ZnO nanosheets/carbon nanocomposites were prepared utilizing the interaction between surface chemical groups of ZnO nanosheets and low-dimensional carbon nanomaterials produced with biomass waste. A series of characterizations were carried out. The results indicated that the band edge of nanocomposite was extended to the whole visible light and NIR. The photoconductive response to weak visible light and 808 nm NIR (near infrared) were studied based on interdigital electrodes of Au on flexible polymer film substrate with casting method. The results indicated that the ZnO/carbon nanocomposite holded photo-switching behavior, the response and recovery were very rapidly. This illustrated that the resulting nanocomposites showed good activities to weak visible light and NIR. Photocatalytic efficiency was examined by selecting typical organic pollutants, some good results were also obtained. It would be potential applications in photocatalysts, self-cleaning films, NIR detector, coatings, and organic pollutants treatment of environmental fields. It would be low-cost, effective, general method to treat the surface of several metal oxides.

Abstract:In this study, a narrow band gap semiconductor ZnFe2O4 is prepared first and then a wide band gap semiconductor ZnO is used to modify it by using hydrothermal method under the participation of the chelating agent nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA), which will be removed in the process of high temperature baking. The structure and composition of ZnFe2O4/ZnO heterojunction were characterized by using powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS). In order to improve the photocatalytic activity of ZnFe2O4/ZnO heterojunction under visible light irradiation Ag nanoparticles were loaded on its surface by using a very simple and special method namely silver mirror reaction at room temperature without agitation. The methyl orange (MO) was taken as model dyes to illustrate the photocatalytic performance of synthesized products on visible light irradiation. Maximum degradation of 84% for MO was achieved when one 85 W ordinary household energy-saving lamp was used as light source and ZnFe2O4/ZnO/Ag as multicomponent photocatalyst.

Abstract:Ag quantum dots (Ag QDs) sensitized TiO2 nanorod arrays (NRAs)/ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) heterojunctions were fabricated by a three-step method and investigated as photocatalysts. Experimental results showed that the novel material exhibited enhanced optical properties and a high degradation rate (for methyl orange) under UV light (109% compared to bare TiO2 NRAs). The high rate was attributed to an increase in the separation of electrons-holes induced by the introduction of the ZnO NPs and the localized surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of Ag QDs. The degradation mechanism was elucidated based on the band structure. It is suggested that the TiO2/ZnO/Ag nanostructure developed in our work can provide a new platform for the design of highly efficient photocatalysts.

Abstract:Zinc oxide (ZnO) has been widely used as a photocatalyst for solar energy conversion and treatment of organic pollutants because of its low toxicity and high photocatalytic efficiency. However, the applicability of ZnO in visible light is limited because of the wide band gap of the material, which results in low efficiency during solar photoconversion. In this paper, we report the facile one-pot, morphology-controlled, and large-scale synthesis of carbon-doped ZnO through urea-assisted thermal decomposition of zinc acetate. Nanorods and nanospheres of carbon-doped ZnO were successfully prepared by using this one-step method with various weight percent of urea. The photocatalytic activities of nanocrystals obtained with different morphologies and carbon contents were evaluated through degradation of methylene blue with visible light irradiation. Results showed that incorporation of carbon decreases the energy bandgap of ZnO, improves the separation efficiency of its electron–hole pairs, and significantly enhances the visible light photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:Introduction: The efficiency of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles for environmental decontamination is limited by their reliance on ultraviolet (UV) light and rapid charge carrier recombination. Carbon doping has been proposed to address these challenges by potentially enhancing visible light absorption and charge separation. Objectives: This study aims to introduce a novel, single-step synthesis method for carbon-doped ZnO (C-Z) nanoparticles, leveraging the decomposition of zinc nitrate hexahydrate and furfural under a nitrogen atmosphere to improve photocatalytic activity under visible light. Methods: A series of C-Z variants (C-Z-1 to C-Z-5) and an undoped sample (ZnO-0) were synthesized. The influence of furfural on the synthesis process and doping mechanism was analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). Results: XPS confirmed the integration of carbon within the ZnO matrix, and XRD indicated increased lattice dimensions owing to doping. DRS revealed bandgap narrowing, suggesting enhanced charge separation. Among the variants, C-Z-3 significantly outperformed the others, showing a 12-fold increase in the photocatalytic degradation rate of Rhodamine B compared to undoped ZnO. Conclusion: The developed single-step synthesis method for C-Z nanoparticles represents a major advancement in materials engineering for ecological applications. The enhanced photocatalytic activity under visible light, as demonstrated by C-Z-3, underscores the potential of these nanoparticles for environmental decontamination.

Abstract:An efficient photocatalyst consisting of heterostructured ZnO-ZnS nanocables was synthesized via a template-assisted method. The ZnS shell with an adjustable thickness around 10 nm can be synthesized in a sodium sulfide solution from electrospun zinc oxide (ZnO) nanofibers, resulting in the core-shell nanostructures. The morphology and structure of the samples during the conversion process were characterized, and the corresponding ultraviolet photocatalytic activity was evaluated by using rhodamine B degradation as a probe reaction. The coupling of the two photocatalysts suggests a higher photon efficiency and an enhanced exciton separation, which lead to a remarkable improvement of the photocatalytic activity by similar to 10 times as compared with pure ZnO nanofibers.
Enhancement in Visible Light-Responsive Photocatalytic Activity by Embedding Cu-doped ZnO Nanoparticles on Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:Copper doped ZnO nanoparticles embedded on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were successfully synthesized using a facile, nontoxic sol method. The resulting visible light-responsive Cu-doped ZnO/CNTs composites were characterized using powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), high resolution transmission electron microscope (HR-TEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET) surface area analyzer. Optical properties of Cu-doped ZnO/CNTs nanocomposites, studied using UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL), which exhibited extended light absorption in visible light region and possessed better charge separation capability, respectively as compared to Cu-doped ZnO, pure ZnO and ZnO/CNTs composite. The photocatalytic activity was tested by degradation of methyl orange (MO) dye under visible light irradiation. The results demonstrated that Cu-doped ZnO/CNTs nanocomposites effectively bleached out MO, showing an impressive photocatalytic enhancement over ZnO, commercial ZnO, Cu-doped ZnO nanoparticles and ZnO/CNTs nanocomposites. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) of textile wastewater was also measured before and after the photocatalysis experiment under sunlight to evaluate the mineralization of wastewater. The significant decrease in COD of the treated effluent revealed a complete destruction of the organic molecules along with color removal. This dramatically enhanced photoactivity of nanocomposite photocatalysts was attributed to greater adsorptivity of dyes, extended light absorption and increased charge separation efficiency due to excellent electrical properties of carbon nanotubes and the large surface area. Abstract:By virtue of their green and environmentally friendly properties, photocatalysis has become one of the most ideal solutions for antibiotic pollution. Herein, a series of direct Z-scheme Zn0.5Cd0.5S/NiCo2O4 photocatalysts have been successfully fabricated. The obtained Zn0.5Cd0.5S/NiCo2O4 photocatalysts displayed outstanding photocatalytic performance for tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl) degradation under the irradiation of a low-energy lamp (white LED lamp, 5 W). Compared to pure Zn0.5Cd0.5S nanoparticles and NiCo2O4 nanosheets, the Zn0.5Cd0.5S/NiCo2O4 photocatalysts exhibited significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity. This pleasantly surprised result can be attributed to the formation of Z-scheme heterojunction, which effectively inhibited the recombination of electron–hole pairs and boosted the transfer efficiency of photoinduced electrons. Moreover, anchoring Zn0.5Cd0.5S nanoparticles on the surface of NiCo2O4 nanosheets can effectively reduce the aggregation of Zn0.5Cd0.5S nanoparticles and thus increase the active site. Furthermore, free radical trapping experiments confirmed that •O2− and h+ radicals play a major role in the photocatalytic process and verified the rationality of the proposed Z-scheme mechanism. Therefore, our study provides a simple strategy for the construction of direct Z-scheme system with outstanding photocatalytic performance.

Abstract:C-doped ZnO hierarchically porous nanoarchitectures were synthesized in situ on indium tin oxide (ITO) through a counter strategy. The PEC performance of the C-doped ZnO nanoarchitectures in the splitting of water without sacrificial reagents was systematically evaluated for the first time. In comparison to other ZnO-based photoanodes in the literature, C-doped ZnO nanoarchitectures exhibit a striking photoresponse. Not only do they have a maximum IPCE value of 95%, but they also have an IPCE at the monochromatic wavelength of 400 nm as high as 26.6%, implying that modification by doping with carbon substantially improves the light utilization and conversion efficiency in the visible region of interest over those obtained using a conventional ZnO structure. This model hybrid photoanode will enable us to design high-activity, high-stability visible-light-driven photoelectrodes in the future.
Enhanced visible light photocatalytic performance of ZnO nanowires integrated with CdS and Ag2S

Abstract:A series of ZnO-CdS-Ag2S ternary nanostructures with different amounts of Ag2S were prepared using simple and low-cost successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) and a chemical precipitation method. The ZnO nanowires, with a diameter of ∼ 100 nm and a length of ∼ 1 μm, were modified by coating CdS and Ag2S. CdS has a high absorption coefficient and can efficiently match with the energy levels of ZnO, which can enhance the light absorption ability of the nanostructures. In addition, Ag2S with a narrow band gap was used as the main light absorber and played an important role in increasing the light absorption in the visible light region. The photocatalytic activity of the ZnO-CdS-Ag2S ternary nanostructures was investigated using the degradation of methyl orange (MO) in an aqueous solution under visible light. The ZnO-CdS-Ag2S ternary nanostructures were found to be more efficient than ZnO nanowires, ZnO-CdS nanowires, and ZnO-Ag2S nanowires. There is 7.68 times more photocatalytic activity for MO degradation in terms of the rate constant for ZnO-CdS-Ag2S 15-cycle ternary nanostructure compared to the as-grown ZnO. Furthermore, the effect of the amount of Ag2S and CdS on the ZnO surface on the photocatalytic activity was analyzed. The superior photo-absorption properties and photocatalytic performance of the ZnO-CdS-Ag2S ternary nanostructures can be ascribed to the heterostructure, which enhanced the separation of the photo-induced electron-hole pairs. In addition, visible light could be absorbed by ZnO-CdS-Ag2S ternary nanostructures rather than by ZnO.
CdS/ZnO: A Multipronged Approach for Efficient Reduction of Carbon Dioxide under Visible Light Irradiation

Abstract:Photocatalytic conversion of CO2 to fuels is a sustainable approach to obtain clean energy from CO2 using solar energy. This work focuses on a multipronged approach for efficient photoreduction of CO2 by designing a CdS/ZnO heterojunction photocatalyst. It is found that the combination of CdS and ZnO leads to about 11 times higher activity (383 K) for the reduction of CO2 to fuels than that over CdS under the irradiation of visible light. This is ascribed to the well-matched structural and intrinsic properties of the CdS/ZnO heterojunction, in which generation of electrons and holes by CdS-captured photons, separation and migration of electrons to ZnO by the heterojunction, and efficient adsorption/activation of CO2 on ZnO all work in a concert and harmonious way. This work highlights the potential of improving the performance of CO2 photocatalytic reduction based on a multipronged approach.

Novel Visible Light Induced Ag2S/g-C3N4/ZnO Nanoarrays Heterojunction for Efficient Photocatalytic Performance

Abstract:Ag2S/g-C3N4/ZnO nanoarrays heterojunction with different amounts of Ag2S was synthesized by simple chemical method, and a core-shell structure was formed. ZnO acts as the core while g-C3N4 and Ag2S are the shells in order to absorb visible light and to restrain photo-corrosion. The optimal experimental condition and modifying amount have been investigated. The photocatalytic performance of g-C3N4/ZnO is 2 times than that of pure ZnO NRs. Layered-structure g-C3N4 offers the opportunities for rapid electron transfer process to enhance photocatalytic performance. The photocatalytic performance of the optimal material, as 15Ag(2)S/g-C3N4/ZnO, is 6 times than that of pure ZnO NRs. The broader range and stronger indensity absorption of visible light make great contribution to enhancing photocatalytic performance. Besides, the inter-built electrical field of g-C3N4 with ZnO and Ag2S ensure the efficient separation of photo-induced carriers. Therefore, the core-shell structure heterojunction of Ag2S/g-C3N4/ZnO can largely promote photocatalytic performance.
Synthesis of Micro-Nano Heterostructure AgBr/ZnO Composite for Advanced Visible Lightphotocatalysis

Abstract:In this paper, novel micro-nano heterostructure AgBr/ZnO composite was successfully synthesized by a facile one-step hydrothermal reaction at 160°C. Its morphology, crystallinity, chemical composition and optical properties were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) and UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). The results have indicated that AgBr nanoparticles were evenly distributed on the surface of ZnO microrods. In addition, the photocatalytic activities of samples were evaluated by the degradation of methylene blue (MB) under 410nm light emitting diode (LED) irradiation. Micro-nano heterostructure AgBr/ZnO composite exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity among ZnO microrods, AgBr and Degussa P25. The stability of heterostructure AgBr/ZnO composite was characterized through cyclic photocatalytic test. Results indicated promising stable degradation performance of micro-nano heterostructure AgBr/ZnO composite.
Facile Synthesis of Highly Efficient ZnO/ZnFe2O4 Photocatalyst Using Earth-Abundant Sphalerite and Its Visible Light Photocatalytic Activity

Abstract:Micrometer-scale ZnO/ZnFe2O4 coupled photocatalyst is synthesized via a simple, one-step thermal treatment performing on natural Fe-bearing sphalerite ((Zn, Fe)S). In situ high-temperature X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetry, differential thermal analysis (TG/DTA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results indicated that octahedral ZnFe2O4 (similar to 5 mu m) formed on the surface of substrate-like ZnO (tens of microns) derived from the oxidation of sulfides upon heating to 800 degrees C in air for 1 h, and the two components kept stable phase ratio at 3:7 (wt%) from 900 degrees C (sample M-900) to 1200 degrees C (sample M-1200). X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and Raman spectra revealed that more Zn atoms in ZnFe2O4 of M-1200 occupied tetrahedral sites than M-900, resulting in a sharper A(1g) mode (similar to 647 cm(-1)), more ordered spinel structure and less antisite defects. Compared with visible-light responsive sphalerite (Zn, Fe)S, M-1200 performed more 200 nm of red-shifted optical absorption, 2.5 times at most higher the incident photon-to-electron conversion efficiency (IPCE) and 2-3-fold photocatalytic efficiency towards degradation of methyl orange and inactivation of Escherichia coli K-12. Besides, the photocatalytic activities of M-1200 preponderate over M-900, typical visible-light catalyst ZnFe2O4 and ZnO/ZnFe2O4 mechanically mixed sample. The optimization of lattice structure and the establishment of special band alignment were suggested to be remarkably beneficial to the separation of photogenerated electrons-holes and promote the photocatalytic performance. This study would enlighten a feasible and efficient strategy to fabricate coupled photocatalyst by utilizing Earth-abundant and low-cost natural minerals for solving environmental problems.

Abstract:Developing highly active, recyclable, and inexpensive photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) under visible light is significant for the direct conversion of solar energy into chemical fuels for various green energy applications. For such applications, it is very challenging but vitally important for a photocatalyst to simultaneously enhance the visible-light absorption and suppress photogenerated electron-hole recombination, while also to maintain high stability and recyclability. Herein, a metal-organic framework (MOF)-templated strategy has been developed to prepare heterostructured nanocatalysts with superior photocatalytic HER activity. Very uniquely, the synthesized photocatalytic materials can be recycled easily after use to restore the initial photocatalytic activity. It is shown that by controlling the calcination temperature and time with MOF-5 as a host and guest thioacetamide as a sulfur source, the chemical compositions of the formed heterojunctions of ZnO/ZnS can be tuned to further enhance the visible-light absorption and photocatalytic activity. The nanoscale heterojunction ZnO/ZnS structural feature serves to reduce the average free path of charge carriers and improve the charge separation efficiency, thus leading to significantly enhanced HER activity under visible-light irradiation (λ > 420 nm) with high stability and recyclability without any cocatalyst.

Abstract:In this paper, porous zinc oxide (ZnO) nanosheets were successfully prepared by a simple low-temperature hydrothermal method. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) tests showed that the synthesized product was ZnO with porous sheet structure. The diameter of porous nanosheets was about 100 nm and the thickness was about 8 nm. As a photocatalyst, the degradation efficiencies of porous ZnO nanosheets for methyl orange (MO), methylene blue (MB) and Rhodamine B (RhB) were 97.5%, 99% and 96.8%, respectively. In addition, the degradation efficiency of ZnO for mixed dyes (Mo, MB and RhB) was satisfactory, reaching 97.7%. The photocatalytic stability of MB was further tested and remained at 99% after 20 cycles. In the experiment, ZnO/FTO (fluorine-doped tin oxide) composites were prepared by using ZnO as the conductive layer. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) was deposited on the surface of ZnO/FTO by electrodeposition, so as to obtain a TiO2/ZnO/FTO composite. By studying the electrochromic properties of this composite, it was found that the TiO2/ZnO/FTO composite shows a large light modulation range (55% at 1000 nm) and excellent cycle stability (96.6% at 200 cycles). The main reason for the excellent electrochromic properties may be the synergistic effect between the porous structure and the polymetallic oxides. This study is helpful to improve the photocatalytic efficiency and cycling stability of metal oxides, improve the transmittance of thin films and provide a new strategy for the preparation of ZnO composite materials with excellent photocatalytic and electrochromic properties.

Construction of 2D Zn-MOF/BiVO4 S-scheme heterojunction for efficient photocatalytic CO2 conversion under visible light irradiation

Abstract:The construction of S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts has been regarded as an effective avenue to facilitate the conversion of solar energy to fuel. However, there are still considerable challenges with regard to efficient charge transfer, the abundance of catalytic sites, and extended light absorption. Herein, an S-scheme heterojunction of 2D/2D zinc porphyrin-based metal-organic frameworks/BiVO4 nanosheets (Zn-MOF/BVON) was fabricated for efficient photocatalytic CO2 conversion. The optimal one shows a 22-fold photoactivity enhancement when compared to the previously reported BiVO4 nanoflake (ca. 15 nm), and even exhibits ~2-time improvement than the traditional g-C3N4/BiVO4 heterojunction. The excellent photoactivities are ascribed to the strengthened S-scheme charge transfer and separation, promoted CO2 activation by the well-dispersed metal nodes Zn2(COO)4 in the Zn-MOF, and extended visible light response range based on the results of the electrochemical reduction, electron paramagnetic resonance, and in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy. The dimension-matched Zn-MOF/BVON S-scheme heterojunction endowed with highly efficient charge separation and abundant catalytic active sites contributed to the superior CO2 conversion. This study offers a facile strategy for constructing S-scheme heterojunctions involving porphyrin-based MOFs for solar fuel production.

Abstract:A bismuth-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) derived strategy is developed to construct nanoscale Bi2O2CO3/porous g-C3N4 Z-scheme heterojunction. Bi2O2CO3 nanoparticles uniformly distribute in the surface, edge and interlayer of g-C3N4 nanosheets, thus significantly increasing intimate contact at the interface. Furthermore, the Z-scheme heterojunctions and doped N atoms escaping from g-C3N4 to Bi2O2CO3 provide a charge transport chain to promote the charge carriers separation and accelerate the oxidation of center dot O-2(-) by holes, as confirmed by photoluminescence, photoelectrochemical and electron spin resonance measurements. Benefitting from these, the optimized composites not only outperform the pristine g-C3N4 in the removal of sulfamethazine (SMT) within 90 min visible light illumination (lambda > 420 nm) but also serve to selectively generate singlet oxygen (O-1(2)) during the molecular oxygen activation. The present study provides some guidelines for the design of photocatalysts via a MOF-assisted route toward sustainable environmental remediation.
N, S-GQDs and Au nanoparticles co-modified ultrathin Bi2MoO6 nanosheet with enhanced charge transport dynamics for full-spectrum-light-driven molecular oxygen activation

Abstract:It is a great challenge to achieve ultrafast charge transfer and simultaneously strengthen light adsorption for full-spectrum-light-activated photocatalysis. In this work, N and S co-doped graphene quantum dots (N, S-GQDs) and Au nanoparticles are successfully co-modified on atomic ultrathin Bi2MoO6 nanosheet, and the prepared hybrid material displays exceptional performance in charge carrier transfer and light harvest. The obtained hybrid material possesses excellent photocatalytic activity in molecular oxygen activation for oxytetracycline (OTC) degradation with 3.69-fold higher reaction rate than pristine Bi2MoO6 under visible light irradiation. In addition, it also possesses near-infrared-light-driven catalytic activity, about 24.47% of OTC can be degraded under near-infrared light irradiation. Moreover, the hybrid material displays outstanding catalytic performance for actual wastewater treatment, and it also possesses high photostability. The mechanism exploration reveals that the boosted photocatalytic performance is originated from three aspects. The up-conversion photoluminescence feature of N, S-GQDs broadens photoresponse range, and the light nanoantenna and SPR effect of Au nanoparticle enhance light absorption intensity. Meanwhile, both N, S-GQDs and Au nanoparticles accelerate charge carrier transfer, the surface charge transfer efficiency of pristine Bi2MoO6 and hybrid material are calculated to be 33.74% and 53.04%, respectively. Furthermore, the possible photodegradation pathway of OTC is also inquired according to liquid chromatography-triple quadrupole tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). This work provides inspiration to rationally design high-performance full-spectrum-light-driven catalysts in molecular oxygen activation for environmental modification.
