Abstract:Drawing inspiration from the efficient information collection capability of the star-nosed mole, this paper proposes a spatial exploration biomimetic soft robot equipped with a polydimethylsiloxane-polyethylene terephthalate cylindrical tactile sensor based on bilayer single-electrode triboelectric nanogenerators. According to the biological structure of the star-nosed mole, a pneumatic driving platform was designed, and a constant curvature model for robot motion control was established to provide position information for the contact point between the sensor and the external environment. Complemented by a cylindrical tactile sensor array, the system has completed several different spatial exploration tasks, offering a novel solution for future environmental detection endeavors.

Abstract:Self-growing robots are an emerging solution in soft robotics for navigating, exploring, and colonizing unstructured environments. However, their ability to grow and move in heterogeneous three-dimensional (3D) spaces, comparable with real-world conditions, is still developing. We present an autonomous growing robot that draws inspiration from the behavioral adaptive strategies of climbing plants to navigate unstructured environments. The robot mimics climbing plants' apical shoot to sense and coordinate additive adaptive growth via an embedded additive manufacturing mechanism and a sensorized tip. Growth orientation, comparable with tropisms in real plants, is dictated by external stimuli, including gravity, light, and shade. These are incorporated within a vector field method to implement the preferred adaptive behavior for a given environment and task, such as growth toward light and/or against gravity. We demonstrate the robot's ability to navigate through growth in relation to voids, potential supports, and thoroughfares in otherwise complex habitats. Adaptive twining around vertical supports can provide an escape from mechanical stress due to self-support, reduce energy expenditure for construction costs, and develop an anchorage point to support further growth and crossing gaps. The robot adapts its material printing parameters to develop a light body and fast growth to twine on supports or a tougher body to enable self-support and cross gaps. These features, typical of climbing plants, highlight a potential for adaptive robots and their on-demand manufacturing. They are especially promising for applications in exploring, monitoring, and interacting with unstructured environments or in the autonomous construction of complex infrastructures.

Abstract:This work develops a fluidic soft robotic eel which combines the adaptability of soft material and the flexibility of eel-shaped body together. The soft eel-like robot consists of multiple soft actuation segments each of which is capable of bidirectional bending by two embedded symmetrical fluidic chambers. Propulsion will be produced when proper control rules are applied to the bending angles of the actuation segments. Robot design, prototype fabrication and system integration are described step by step. A motion controller based on central pattern generator (CPG) is designed for the soft eel-like robot by using identified parameters. Substantial experiments are implemented to evaluate the performance of the prototype. It is shown that the soft eel-like robot can flexibly perform linear motion and turning motion. Moreover, the soft eel-like robot keeps good continuity even when the parameters of the CPG-based controller changes. In general, the experimental results verify the effectiveness of the design and control methods for the soft eel-like robot, which provides a potential candidate to underwater exploration with limited space.

Abstract:Soft robots have recently evoked extensive attention because of their abilities to work effectively in unstructured environments. As an actuation technology of soft robots, dielectric elastomers (DEs) exhibit many intriguing attributes such as large strain and high energy density. This paper presents a novel, DE-based, soft crawling robot inspired by inchworms. The kinematics of the soft crawling robot is explored, and a data-driven model is developed to facilitate the controller design. The overall controller incorporates a feedforward controller, a feedback controller, and a disturbance observer (DOB). The feedback controller and the DOB will compensate the disturbance and model uncertainties resulting from the obtained dynamic model and ensure robust performance of the robot under different conditions. The effectiveness of the proposed control scheme is verified using experiments on surfaces made of different materials and with inclined angles.

Abstract:Developing robots integrating sensors, actuators, and computational capabilities for deep‐sea exploration is challenging. Nature often offers innovative solutions to complex problems, and in this context, inspiration is drawn from the remarkable abilities of deep‐sea snails, specifically their unique tentacles, often referred to as “eyestalks” due to the presence of an eye at their tip. Herein, “DeepStalk,” a soft robot designed for deep‐sea exploration, is introduced, utilizing three shape memory alloys (SMAs) springs that mimic the three tentacle flexor muscles of deep‐sea snails. Overall, DeepStalk incorporates sensory, actuation, and control modules for operation under high hydrostatic pressure. To achieve precise control of its orientation in 3D space, a simple and reliable vector‐PID controller is developed. Remarkably, the robot successfully maintains its desired bending attitude even at 30 MPa hydrostatic pressure, achieved through the Joule heating of SMA springs. Furthermore, DeepStalk demonstrates the capability to track moving objects underwater, showcasing its potential application in challenging environments at depths of up to 20 MPa. This marks the first attempt for soft robots to integrate sensor, actuator, and control modules capable of complex tasks under high hydrostatic pressure. This innovative research advances integrated soft robotic systems for deep‐sea exploration field.

Abstract:Soft growing robots, are a type of robots that are designed to move and adapt to their environment in a similar way to how plants grow and move with potential applications where they could be used to navigate through tight spaces, dangerous terrain, and hard-to-reach areas. This research explores the application of deep reinforcement Q-learning algorithm for facilitating the navigation of the soft growing robots in cluttered environments. The proposed algorithm utilizes the flexibility of the soft robot to adapt and incorporate the interaction between the robot and the environment into the decision-making process. Results from simulations show that the proposed algorithm improves the soft robot's ability to navigate effectively and efficiently in confined spaces. This study presents a promising approach to addressing the challenges faced by growing robots in particular and soft robots general in planning obstacle-aware paths in real-world scenarios.

Abstract:Soft crawling robots have been widely studied and applied because of their excellent environmental adaptability and flexible movement. However, most existing soft crawling robots typically exhibit a single-motion mode and lack diverse capabilities. Inspired by Drosophila larvae, this paper proposes a compact soft crawling robot (weight, 13 g; length, 165 mm; diameter, 35 mm) with multimodal locomotion (forward, turning, rolling, and twisting). Each robot module uses 4 sets of high-power-density shape memory alloy actuators, endowing it with 4 degrees of motion freedom. We analyze the mechanical characteristics of the robot modules through experiments and simulation analysis. The plug-and-play modules can be quickly assembled to meet different motion and task requirements. The soft crawling robot can be remotely operated with an external controller, showcasing multimodal motion on various material surfaces. In a narrow maze, the robot demonstrates agile movement and effective maneuvering around obstacles. In addition, leveraging the inherent bistable characteristics of the robot modules, we used the robot modules as anchoring units and installed a microcamera on the robot’s head for pipeline detection. The robot completed the inspection in horizontal, vertical, curved, and branched pipelines, adjusted the camera view, and twisted a valve in the pipeline for the first time. Our research highlights the robot’s superior locomotion and application capabilities, providing an innovative strategy for the development of lightweight, compact, and multifunctional soft crawling robots.

Abstract:Soft robots driven by stimuli-responsive materials have their own unique advantages over traditional rigid robots such as large actuation, light weight, good flexibility and biocompatibility. However, the large actuation of soft robots inherently co-exists with difficulty in control with high precision. This article presents a soft artificial muscle driven robot mimicking cuttlefish with a fully integrated on-board system including power supply and wireless communication system. Without any motors, the movements of the cuttlefish robot are solely actuated by dielectric elastomer which exhibits muscle-like properties including large deformation and high energy density. Reinforcement learning is used to optimize the control strategy of the cuttlefish robot instead of manual adjustment. From scratch, the swimming speed of the robot is enhanced by 91% with reinforcement learning, reaching to 21 mm/s (0.38 body length per second). The design principle behind the structure and the control of the robot can be potentially useful in guiding device designs for demanding applications such as flexible devices and soft robots.

Abstract:Tip-extending soft robots, taking flexible film or rubber as body material and fluid pressure as input power, exhibit excellent advantages in constrained and cluttered environments for detection and manipulation. However, existing soft continuum robots are of great challenges in achieving multiple, mutually independent, and on-demand active steering over a long distance without precise steering control. In this paper, we introduce a vine-like soft robot made up of a pressurized thin-walled vessel integrated with the high controllability of a control system with multiple degrees of freedom in three dimensions. Moreover, steering and kinematic models to relate the steering angle and robot length to the location of the robot tip are provided, and a dynamic finite element model for analyzing the motion of the spatial consecutive steering is established. We demonstrate the abilities of disinfection of the robot moving in a long and tortuous pipeline and detection in a multi-obstacle constrained environment. It is established that the robot exhibits great advantages in active consecutive steering over a long distance, high controllability in completing more complex path planning, and significant ability of carrying operational tools for ventilation pipeline disinfection and multi-obstacle detection. The bionic soft robot shows great promise for use in environment sensing, target detecting, and equipment servicing.

Abstract:This paper presents a soft earthworm robot that is capable of both efficient locomotion and obstacle avoidance. The robot is designed to replicate the unique locomotion mechanisms of earthworms, which enable them to move through narrow and complex environments with ease. The robot consists of multiple segments, each with its own set of actuators, that are connected through rigid plastic joints, allowing for increased adaptability and flexibility in navigating different environments. The robot utilizes proprioceptive sensing and control algorithms to detect and avoid obstacles in real-time while maintaining efficient locomotion. The robot uses a pneumatic actuation system to mimic the circumnutation behavior exhibited by plant roots in order to navigate through complex environments. The results demonstrate the capabilities of the robot for navigating through cluttered environments, making this development significant for various fields of robotics, including search and rescue, environmental monitoring, and medical procedures.

Abstract:Continuum and soft robots can leverage complex actuator shapes to take onuseful shapes while actuating only a few of their many degrees of freedom. Continuum robotsthat alsogrow increasethe range of potential shapes that can be actuated and enable easier access to constrained environments. Existing models for describing the complex kinematics involved in general actuation of continuum robots rely on simulation or well-behaved stressstrain relationships, but the nonlinear behavior of the thin-walled inflated-beams used in growing robots makes these techniques difficult to apply. Here, we derive kinematic models of single, generally routed tendon paths on a soft pneumatic backbone of inextensible but flexible material from geometric relationships alone. This allows for forward modeling of the resulting shapes with only knowledge of the geometry of the system. We show that this model can accurately predict the shape of the whole robot body and how the model changes with actuation type. We also demonstrate the use of this kinematic model for inverse design, where actuator designs are found based on desired final robot shapes. We deploy these designed actuators on soft pneumatic growing robots to show the benefits of simultaneous growth and shape change.

Abstract:Everting, soft growing vine robots benefit from reduced friction with their environment, which allows them to navigate challenging terrain. Vine robots can use air pouches attached to their sides for lateral steering. However, when all pouches are serially connected, the whole robot can only perform one constant curvature in free space. It must contact the environment to navigate through obstacles along paths with multiple turns. This work presents a multi-segment vine robot that can navigate complex paths without interacting with its environment. This is achieved by a new steering method that selectively actuates each single pouch at the tip, providing high degrees of freedom with few control inputs. A small magnetic valve connects each pouch to a pressure supply line. A motorized tip mount uses an interlocking mechanism and motorized rollers on the outer material of the vine robot. As each valve passes through the tip mount, a permanent magnet inside the tip mount opens the valve so the corresponding pouch is connected to the pressure supply line at the same moment. Novel cylindrical pneumatic artificial muscles (cPAMs) are integrated into the vine robot and inflate to a cylindrical shape for improved bending characteristics compared to other state-of-the-art vine robots. The motorized tip mount controls a continuous eversion speed and enables controlled retraction. A final prototype was able to repeatably grow into different shapes and hold these shapes. We predict the path using a model that assumes a piecewise constant curvature along the outside of the multi-segment vine robot. The proposed multi-segment steering method can be extended to other soft continuum robot designs.
Human Interface for Teleoperated Object Manipulation with a Soft Growing Robot

Abstract:Soft growing robots are proposed for use in applications such as complex manipulation tasks or navigation in disaster scenarios. Safe interaction and ease of production promote the usage of this technology, but soft robots can be challenging to teleoperate due to their unique degrees of freedom. In this paper, we propose a human-centered interface that allows users to teleoperate a soft growing robot for manipulation tasks using arm movements. A study was conducted to assess the intuitiveness of the interface and the performance of our soft robot, involving a pick-and-place manipulation task. The results show that users completed the task with a success rate of 97%, achieving placement errors below 2 cm on average. These results demonstrate that our body-movement-based interface is an effective method for control of a soft growing robot manipulator.

Abstract:We present a user-friendly interface to teleoperate a soft robot manipulator in a complex environment. Key components of the system include a manipulator with a grasping end-effector that grows via tip eversion, gesture-based control, and haptic display to the operator for feedback and guidance. In the initial work, the operator uses the soft robot to build a tower of blocks, and future works will extend this to shared autonomy scenarios in which the human operator and robot intelligence are both necessary for task completion.

Soft Crawling Microrobot Based on Flexible Optoelectronics Enabling Autonomous Phototaxis in Terrestrial and Aquatic Environments

Abstract:Many organisms move directly toward light for prey hunting or navigation, which is called phototaxis. Mimicking this behavior in robots is crucially important in the energy industry and environmental exploration. However, the phototaxis robots with rigid bodies and sensors still face challenges in adapting to unstructured environments, and the soft phototaxis robots often have high requirements for light sources with limited locomotion performance. Here, we report a 3.5 g soft microrobot that can perceive the azimuth angle of light sources and exhibit rapid phototaxis locomotion autonomously enabled by three-dimensional flexible optoelectronics and compliant shape memory alloy (SMA) actuators. The optoelectronics is assembled from a planar patterned flexible circuit with miniature photodetectors, introducing the self-occlusion to light, resulting in high sensing ability (error < 3.5°) compared with the planar counterpart. The actuator produces a straightening motion driven by an SMA wire and is then returned to a curled shape by a prestretched elastomer layer. The actuator exhibits rapid actuation within 0.1 s, a significant degree of deformation (curvature change of ∼87 m-1) and a blocking force of ∼0.4 N, which is 68 times its own weight. Finally, we demonstrated the robot is capable of autonomously crawling toward a moving light source in a hybrid aquatic-terrestrial environment without human intervention. We envision that our microrobot could be widely used in autonomous light tracking applications.

Abstract:Soft growing robots, which mimic the biological growth of plants, have demonstrated excellent performance in navigating tight and distant environments due to their flexibility and extendable lengths of several tens of meters. However, controlling the position of the tip of these robots can be challenging due to the lack of precise methods for measuring the robots’ Cartesian position in their working environments. Moreover, classical control techniques are not suitable for these robots because they involve the irreversible addition of materials, which introduces process constraints. In this paper, we propose two optimization-based approaches, combining Moving Horizon Estimation (MHE) with Nonlinear Model Predictive Control (NMPC), to achieve superior performance in point stabilization, trajectory tracking, and obstacle avoidance for these robots. MHE is used to estimate the entire state of the robot, including its unknown Cartesian position, based on available configuration measurements. The proposed NMPC approach considers process constraints by relying on the estimated state to ensure optimal performance. We perform numerical simulations using the nonlinear kinematic model of a vine-like robot, one of the newly introduced plant-inspired growing robots, and achieve satisfactory results in terms of reduced computation times and tracking error.

Abstract:Tasks involving exploration and inspection of narrow environments demand a robot to have a flexible body. Such a robot is especially preferred if the integrity of its surrounding is crucial, as in endoscopy procedures. We propose the design of a small, self-propelled soft robot that can operate in a constrained environment. By periodic activation of a series of pneumatic actuators fabricated using a casting technique, sinusoidal locomotion is achieved. The wave-like locomotive strategy with an additional support mechanism enabled movement in multiple scenarios, including traveling horizontally and vertically in environments of different characteristics. Two analytical models are presented to highlight the design characteristics. The first predicts the velocity of the robot in relation to the working conditions, while the second calculates the force that the robot body exerts on its surroundings. Its mobility was tested in simple and complex routes under rigid and elastic environments. The resulting percent errors for the predictions of velocity and lateral force are 7.89% and 16.86%, respectively. In terms of performance, the robot can move horizontally in rigid tubes even if the walls are lubricated, and can achieve a peak speed of 40.11 mm/s, or 0.171 Body-Length/s (BL/s). With the addition of a tail balloon, the robot also successfully ascended a vertical tube with a maximum speed of 9.22 mm/s (or 0.039 BL/s). The presented work is expected to pave the way toward feasible robotic applications, such as pipe inspection.

Abstract:Inspired by nature, this research presents soft robots made from a spiral‐shaped piezoelectric composite, whose relative forward speed is 76 body length per second and relative backward speed is 11.26 body length per second. The robot can jump, climb, load carrying, steer, and escape from a confined space without external control and human intervention. An untethered robot is also demonstrated. Soft robots typically exhibit limited agility due to inherent properties of soft materials. The structural design of soft robots is one of the key elements to improve their mobility. Inspired by the Archimedean spiral geometry in nature, here, a fast‐moving spiral‐shaped soft robot made of a piezoelectric composite with an amorphous piezoelectric vinylidene fluoride film and a layer of copper tape is presented. The soft robot demonstrates a forward locomotion speed of 76 body length per second under the first‐order resonance frequency and a backward locomotion speed of 11.26 body length per second at the third‐order resonance frequency. Moreover, the multitasking capabilities of the soft robot in slope climbing, step jumping, load carrying, and steering are demonstrated. The soft robot can escape from a relatively confined space without external control and human intervention. An untethered robot with a battery and a flexible circuit (a payload of 1.665 g and a total weight of 1.815 g) can move at an absolute speed of 20 mm s−1 (1 body length per second). This study opens a new generic design paradigm for next‐generation fast‐moving soft robots that are applicable for multifunctionality at small scales.
