Abstract:AbstractΤhis chapter is aimed at providing current knowledge on the association of surface texture with machining, along with recent advances in surface characterization and evaluation. Various texture parameters, adopted by ISO standards or not, are described and their distinctive power is considered. Arithmetic parameters, statistical and random process functions serve as measures for rendering in-height and inlength surface characteristics and allow multiparameter analysis of the surface, something quite necessary under current high requirements for precision and operation. Theoretical models for roughness parameters and experimental trends with regard to machining conditions are discussed. Isotropy of machined surfaces is also considered and methods for surface typology are finally discussed.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new surface form measurement method using a scanning type surface profiler for small roll worlpieces, which are used in many industrial fields. In this method, inclination of a workpiece is required to be aligned precisely. For this reason, this paper also proposes a method of measuring the inclination angle of the workpiece without using any other external sensors but using a scanning probe of the surface profiler. In order to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed principles, a measurement system is developed and some experiments are carried out.

Abstract:There is the problem with a proper selection of areal parameters that describe a surface texture. Analysis of the linear correlation between parameters can be helpful in the selection of parameters. One hundred surface topographies after five machining treatments (grinding, polishing, vapour blasting, milling, and one-process honing) were measured by a white light interferometer and analysed. The number of surfaces within each group was twenty. In addition, 20 surfaces after various treatments were selected. On the basis of correlation and regression analysis, sets of parameters describing individual surface groups were determined. It was found that one-process surfaces can be characterised by the following set of parameters: Sq, Sal, Str, Sdq, Sq/Sa, and Sp/Sz, the wider description contains also: Ssk, Sku, and Spd. It is possible to identify the machining process on the basis of selected areal surface texture parameters. The following pairs of parameters were chosen: Sq/Sa and Sp/Sz, Sdq and Sal, as well as Str and Spd. It was found that the Sq/Sa and Sp/Sz ratios better characterize the ordinate distribution of surface texture than Ssk and Sku.

Abstract:This paper reviews the different methods used to give a quantitative characterisation of surface texture. The paper contains a review of conventional 2D as well as 3D roughness parameters, with particular emphasis on recent international standards and developments. It presents new texture characterisation methods, such as fractals, wavelets, change trees and others, including for each method a short review, the parameters that the new methods calculate, and applications of the methods to solve surface problems. The paper contains a discussion on the relevance of the different parameters and quantification methods in terms of functional correlations, and it addresses the need for reducing the large number of existing parameters. The review considers the present situation and gives suggestions for future activities.

Abstract:The ability to objectively specify surface finish to ensure consistent visual appearance addresses a vital need in surface coating engineering. This work demonstrates how a computational framework, called surface quality and inspection descriptors (SQuIDTM), can be leveraged to effectively rank different grades of surface finish appearances. ISO 25178-2 areal surface metrics extracted from bandpass-filtered measurements of a set of ten visual smoothness standards taken on a coherent scanning interferometer are used to quantify different grades of powder-coated surface finish. The ability to automatically classify the standard tiles using multi-scale areal texture parameters is compared to parameters obtained from a hand-held gloss meter. The results indicate that the ten different surface finishes can be automatically classified with accuracies as low as 65% and as high as 99%, depending on the filtering and parameters used to quantify the surfaces. The highest classification accuracy is achieved using only five multi-scale topography descriptions of the surface.

Abstract:This study examines the effects of crucial ISO 25178 parameters, including height, functional, spatial, functional (stratified), hybrid, and functional (volume), on surface wettability and the influence of key electric discharge texturing process parameters, including current and pulse ON time, on surface roughness (Sa) and water droplet contact angle. To examine the level of significance of each parameter and to determine the level of correlation, a three-level full factorial experimental design, and ANOVA analysis are used. The findings showed that over pulse ON time, the important factor influencing surface roughness (Sa) and contact angle is current. The surface roughness (Sa) is observed to vary between 4.2 and 12.7, whereas the water droplet contact angle varies between 90.7° and 120.4°. In order to find out the correlation between the surface texture parameters based on the ISO 251718, Pearson Correlation analysis were adopted and it is observed that Sa, Sq, Str, Smrk1, Sdr, Vm, and Vmp are having a substantial correlation with the contact angle. Among the ISO25178 parameters examined, Smrk1, however, has demonstrated a highest impact on the contact angle with a highest pearson correlation coefficient of −0.757.

Abstract:This paper looks into the irregular machined surface textures appearing in the process of avoiding five-axis singularities using the C-space based tool orientation translation method. At first, the mechanism for the appearances of the irregular surface textures is analyzed. A cutting simulation in VERICUT reveals that irregular surface textures are actually caused by lacking control of the tool orientation angles in the orientation modification process. Realizing that, a modified particle swarm optimization (PSO) is intergraded into the previous tool orientation translation method. In the PSO, the particle evolving equations are redefined and a mutation operation is added. The objective of the PSO is to find an optimal translating vector in the C-space so that the changed tool orientation angles can reach minimum values. In this way, the surface textures can be controlled. Three comparative cutting experiments with fillet endmills are carried out to verify the effect of the proposed method. The experimental results show that: (1) with the tool orientation translation method, the five-axis singular problem can be well avoided; and (2) with the optimal translating vector found by the PSO, the machined surface textures can be greatly improved.

Abstract:In surface metrology, filtration is one of the key operations which is used to decompose the components of the surface and extract a scale-limited surface for further assessment. Although many types of filters have been proposed and some of them have been standardized in ISO16610 serials, the classic surface topography filters often inherit the mode mixing and boundary distortion problems that may lead to surface texture verification failures. This study proposes a new filter algorithm for the surface texture analysis, and it is based on the extended bi-dimensional variational mode decomposition (BVMD), named EBVMD. BVMD is widely used in the field of image processing and it is probably first-time to be used in the field of surface texture analysis. It consists of three steps. Firstly, a coarse-grained parallel genetic algorithm is applied in the devised model to select of optimal penalty factor and decomposition number of the bi-dimensional variational mode, and the best set of modes is gained. Secondly, the instantaneous wavelength value of each mode is obtained by calculating the corresponding isotropic monogenic signals. Finally, the scale-limited surface is extracted by the mean instantaneous wavelength. Experiments are conducted to verify the feasibility of the proposed filter on areal surface texture feature extraction with the mode aliasing and shape distortion phenomenon remedies. The experimental results show that the mean square error of roughness reconstructed by the proposed filter compared with the benchmarking values is 6.37×10-5, and owing to high flexibility in practice, the devised EBVMD provides a promising solution to achieve a high accuracy and efficiency filter.

Abstract:Since the complete description of complex part surface is difficult to achieve using the existing integral dimensional or fractal dimensional approaches, the novel concept of hybrid dimension and its modeling method of part surface topography are proposed in this paper. The hybrid dimensional model of part surface topography is established based on the deflection method of surface correlation coefficient, which associates the integral dimensional and fractal dimensional surface topographies. Superimposing the normalized fractal dimensional surface altitude field on the B-spline surface, the hybrid dimensional model can express the integral dimensional information of part surface in macro level, and the fractal dimensional detail in micro level. And the correlation of part surface topographies among different scales and different dimensions is established by the Hybrid Dimensional Surface Correlation Coefficient. Moreover, the characteristic parameter identification method for the hybrid dimensional model of part surface topography is proposed. The component information of integral dimension and fractal dimension is separated and extracted by wavelet analysis, and hybrid dimensional characteristic parameters are identified by the generalized surface structure function method and the roughness mapping method. Finally, the proposed method is applied to design and manufacture of turbo expander.

Abstract:In the automotive industry, the measurement, control and reproducibility of certain morphological characteristics of surfaces are important to characterize, qualify, certify and optimize different physical properties, such as the degree of wear, the degree of adhesion by adhesives, glues or paints and optical properties. In this regard, this work is intended demonstrate how it is possible to characterize different surfaces in ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) and PC-ABS (PolyCarbonate/Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) through a set of morphological parameters defined according to the ISO 25178 standard. These surfaces have been subjected to different etching treatments performed with different chemicals, which can radically modify the morphology of the surface, making it more or less suitable according to the industrial purposes sought. Furthermore, in this work an analytical relationship between the hybrid parameters Sdq and Sdr defined in the ISO-25718 standard is also proposed, valid for many surfaces of general use. This study is based on the use of a confocal optical microscope and a SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope), which allow surface morphology to be studied at the micro/nano scale and the measurements are analyzed with special imaging and three-dimensional scanning software that allows the precise measurement of morphological parameters of the standard ISO-25178.

Directional Signatures of Surface Texture

Abstract:Surface texture affects adhesion, friction and wear. A key component in the studies of these effects is a multiscale and directional characterization of surfaces. However, this task is beyond the ability of standard methods currently used. Methods based on fractal geometry, quantifying the surface topography at individual scales and directions, have been developed to overcome this problem. In this study, we propose a unified approach for surface texture analysis comprising three steps: directional surface representation, directional surface dimension and computer implementation. To address longstanding issues of texture analysis of surfaces with directionality and studies of surface texture effects on contact behaviour of rough surfaces, a directional blanket curvature covering method was used. Peak curvature signatures (sets of peak dimensions) were calculated. Higher value of peak dimension represents higher peak curvature complexity. Isotropic (sandblasted) and anisotropic (abraded) titanium alloy (Ti–6Al–4V) surface images were generated. Statistically significant differences in peak dimension were found between isotropic and anisotropic surfaces at scales of 15 μm and 20 μm. Contact areas and pressures were calculated between rigid flat plates pressed against Ti–6Al–4V rough surfaces. For low loads at a scale of 15 μm, contact areas decreased with dimension, while at scale of 25 μm they decreased and then increased. Changes in contact pressures exhibited trends opposite to the areas. For high loads, there are virtually no changes. Results showed that the curvature covering method detects minute differences in surface anisotropy and allows for detailed study of contact behaviour.

Abstract:The surface texture of additively manufactured metallic surfaces made by powder bed methods is affected by a number of factors, including the powder’s particle size distribution, the effect of the heat source, the thickness of the printed layers, the angle of the surface relative to the horizontal build bed and the effect of any post processing/finishing. The aim of the research reported here is to understand the way these surfaces should be measured in order to characterise them. In published research to date, the surface texture is generally reported as an Ra value, measured across the lay. The appropriateness of this method for such surfaces is investigated here. A preliminary investigation was carried out on two additive manufacturing processes—selective laser melting (SLM) and electron beam melting (EBM)—focusing on the effect of build angle and post processing. The surfaces were measured using both tactile and optical methods and a range of profile and areal parameters were reported. Test coupons were manufactured at four angles relative to the horizontal plane of the powder bed using both SLM and EBM. The effect of lay—caused by the layered nature of the manufacturing process—was investigated, as was the required sample area for optical measurements. The surfaces were also measured before and after grit blasting.

Abstract:Abstract The quality precision measurements of the product manufacturing or their surface treatment are considered. The importance of high-precision measurements at high speed, which does not require delivering the product to a special control laboratory, is shown. A precision laser measuring system is developed and manufactured, its kinematic diagram is presented and the calibration process is described. The verification of the measuring process results is given on the example of the parts obtained by polishing and grinding the surface. The dependence of the measurement error calculation is given, it is shown that the error of the measuring system is within acceptable limits. The presented measuring system has the capabilities of processing measurement results and constructing 3D images. Thus, the possibility of obtaining the surface topography parameters in accordance with ISO 25178-1, 25178-2 is shown. The methods of the surface treatment and filtering are used to improve the result accuracy of measuring the manufactured part quality, among which the elimination of the average slope, median filtering, and Wiener filter are described. It is shown that the highest accuracy of measurement results in the nanometre range with minimizing distortion losses is possible using the Wiener filter.

By means of tool image detection and processing, the ideal roughness profile that the tool should produce on the workpiece is evaluated. A model to estimate the value of the effective roughness of the workpiece from one related to the ideal profile is proposed. This model is not significantly influenced by the feed employed.

Abstract:The article aims to use the generated sound as operational information needed for adaptive control of the metalworking process and early monitoring and diagnosis of the condition of the machined materials using a newly introduced surface roughness quality index due to the sound-controlled machining process. The object of the measurement was correlation between the sound intensity generated during cutting and the material parameters of the machined surface, i.e., the roughness of the machined surface and the degree of wear of the cutting tool. The roughness was measured during longitudinal turning of a steel billet with a P25 insert made of 12X18H10T steel and a T15K6 cutting insert made of a titanium, cobalt, and tungsten group alloy. The correlation between the sound and roughness of the machined surface was 0.93, whereas between the sound and wear of the cutting tool was 0.93. The correlation between sound and tool wear in the experiment with P25 and T15K6 cutting inserts and the correlation between sound and roughness is positive.

Abstract:Abstract In recent years, the requirements for high-quality development in the manufacturing industry and extreme application conditions have increasingly demanded higher equipment performance. The surface and interface condition of components is directly related to the stability, reliability and service life of equipment. The development of high-performance or multi-performance surface texturing is of great significance for the effective improvement of mechanical properties, optical properties, catalytic properties and biological properties of surfaces. This paper summarizes the application of textured surfaces in improving the physical, chemical and biological properties of surfaces; outlines the types of texturing patterns and the design methods; analyzes the main technical methods and their characteristics for the preparation of surface textures in additive manufacturing, subtractive manufacturing and equal material manufacturing; and makes outlooks on texturing surfaces from the aspects of performance enhancement, pattern design and manufacturing technology in combination with the development trend of textured surfaces’ intelligence and digitization.

Abstract:Surface roughness is of great significance in maintaining mechanical performance and improving the reliability of the equipment. However, fast surface roughness evaluations that are sufficiently stable and efficient for engineering in-situ use have not yet been realized. To address this issue, an image-driven roughness intelligent method is proposed in this research. By evaluating the texture similarity intelligently between the testing image and the reference image, the surface roughness of the testing image can be acquired. Firstly, with a proposed adaptive texture extraction method, the texture feature of an image can be extracted even under a complex background. Secondly, by establishing the graph structure of the texture grayscale features, the similarity between different images is evaluated. Finally, by establishing a sparrow-optimized support vector machine regression method, the mapping relationship between the similarity and the surface roughness can be acquired. The experimental results indicate that the proposed method for intelligent evaluation of roughness has superior prediction performance (the average relative prediction error of Ra and Rz are 8.8156% and 8.0571%, respectively). Therefore, this work provides a useful tool for non-contact detection of workpiece surface roughness.

Feature Characterization for Profile Surface Texture

Abstract:Conventional field parameters for surface measurement use all data points, while feature characterization focuses on subsets extracted by watershed segmentation. This approach enables the extraction of specific features that are potentially responsible for the function of the surface or are a direct reflection of the manufacturing process, allowing for a more accurate assessment of both aspects. Feature characterization with the underlying watershed segmentation for areal surface topographies has been standardized for over a decade and is well established in industry and research. In contrast, feature characterization for surface profiles has been standardized recently, and the corresponding standard for watershed segmentation is planned to be published in the near future. Since the standards do not provide guidelines for implementation, this paper presents an unambiguous algorithm of the watershed segmentation and the feature characterization for surface profiles. This framework provides the basis for future work, mainly investigating the relationship between feature parameters based on feature characterization and the function of the surface or manufacturing process. For this purpose, recommendations for the configuration and extensions of the toolbox can also be developed, which could find their way into the ISO standards.

Abstract:The measurements were performed on the surfaces made of different materials and typical of diversified character. Glass roughness standards with sinusoidal profile, approximately sinusoidal profile and metallic comparative standards after lathing and grinding were object of research. Analysis was performed including the surface and profile evaluation. Statistical analysis was conducted. Measurement sections and other filter parameters were selected in accordance with standards. Measurements were carried out with stylus tip contact method – using TOPO 01P device designed by The Institute of Advanced Manufacturing Technology, that uses diamond tip inductive sensor. Tip sensor radius is equal to 2 μm. The results of measurements were filtered by: Gaussian filter, Robust Gaussian regression Filter, Spline, Spline Wavelet, Morphological Filter. Gaussian Filter uses linear system based on Fourier wavelengths. Robust Gauss Regression Filter is similar to Gaussian Filter, but it is insensitive on the specified phenomena in input signal. Spline Filter is based on linear polynomial combination. Wavelet Filter decomposes profile on constant shape elements, but on different scales. Morphological Filter operates on the principle of filtered profile plotting using circular disc or horizontal line segment with a specified (respectively) radius or length. Selection of suitable filtration method is essential and one of the most important things to obtain reliable measurement results evaluation. Not all filters are suitable for each type of surface. Filter algorithms differ from each other and this influences in a greater or lesser degree on the roughness profile and hence on roughness parameters and waviness parameters related to it.
Evaluating asphalt pavement surface texture using 3D digital imaging

Abstract:The traditional asphalt mixture surface texture measurement methods cannot provide the distributions of the texture, which is necessary for studying the influence mechanism of texture on tyre/pavement interaction performance. A non-destructive 3-dimensional image-based texture analysis method (3D-ITAM) is developed based on the 3D surface reshaping and spectral analysis techniques. Mixture 3D surface is reshaped based on the photometric stereo method using the acquired tricolour digital images. Spectral indicators representing mixture surface texture distribution properties are calculated from 3D-ITAM software. Additionally, the traditional texture indicator (i.e. mean texture depth) is also calculated. The 3D-ITAM results are confirmed with both macro and micro-texture indicator values from the sand patch method (SPM) and hand-push friction tester (HFT), which are two widely used in practice though they cannot capture the distribution property of surf ace texture. It was demonstrated that the 3D-ITAM results correlate well with SPM and HFT and can be considered as an effective method to characterise the mixture surface texture.
