Abstract:N-Methyl amines play a major role in the production of medicines, pesticides, surfactants and dyes. N-Methylation of primary or second amines with methanol is considered to be a green path for the synthesis of N-methyl amines and the catalyst is key. In this article, the combined Al2O3-mordenite catalyst (mass fraction of alumina is 40%) with good activity, selectivity, lifetime and stability was prepared for N-methylation of various amines with methanol in a hydrogen free system in a fixed bed reactor, and characterized by XRD, N-2 adsorption and NH3-TPD. Furthermore, the methanol adsorption was investigated by in situ FTIR, and the result indicated that methoxyl species may be the active species for the N-methylation of amines.

Abstract:Methyl lactate production from biomass by chemical catalysis is a promising approach in chemical industry. NiO from different suppliers was screened and catalytic conversion processes of biomass-derived carbohydrates to methyl lactate in near critical methanol was optimized. The catalyst used was characterized and the mechanism of the catalytic conversion process with NiO was probed. The results show that NiO from different suppliers has a significant impact on the catalytic conversion of glucose to methyl lactate. NiO from Aladdin has the best catalytic activity. Methyl lactate yield in near-critical methanol is 46.2% under optimal conditions. Moreover, NiO from Aladdin has good reusability. Moderate acidity of catalysts may be the key factor that affects methyl lactate yields. Higher moderate acidity contents of NiO results in higher methyl lactate yields. This work may be helpful in the development of heterogeneous catalysis systems for catalytic conversion of biomass to methyl lactate.

Abstract:Methyl formate is a versatile chemical precursor to a wide range of other important chemicals. It can be synthesized by different routes, among which dehydrogenation and selective oxidation of methanol to methyl formate are particularly attractive, because they are operationally simple and green. Metal catalysts such as Cu and Pd-Zn alloys show good performances in the dehydrogenation reaction, and metal oxides such as MoO3-SnO2 and RuO x /ZrO2, noble metals such as Au and Pd, and their composites, are widely used in the selective oxidation of methanol. We focused on the efficient synthesis of methyl formate, and determined the relationship between the catalyst structures and properties, and the reaction pathways in the dehydrogenation and selective oxidation of methanol. The main factors affecting the reaction pathways and selectivity for methyl formate are discussed in detail. The structures of the formaldehyde species adsorbed on Cu and Pd-Zn alloys surfaces play essential roles in the product selectivities in the dehydrogenation reaction. The secondary reaction rates of the formaldehyde intermediates on supported oxide catalysts and the reactivities of adsorbed oxygen species on noble metals control the selectivities of the methanol selective oxidation. These fundamental insights provide a basis for the design of novel catalysts with specific structures and functions for more efficient conversion of methanol to methyl formate.

Abstract:Bimetallic Pt-based nanodendrites are of particular interest in various catalytic applications due to their high surface areas and low densities. Herein, we provide a facile method for one-pot synthesis of PtRu nanodendrites via the co-reduction of Pt and Ru precursors in oleylamine by H2. The as-fabricated PtRu nanodendrites exhibit superior catalytic activity and durability compared with PtRu nanocrystals (NCs), synthesized under the same reaction conditions, and the commercial Pt/C catalyst towards the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR).

Abstract:Oxidative methane (CH4) carbonylation promises a direct route to the synthesis of value-added oxygenates such as acetic acid (CH3COOH). Here, we report a strategy to realize oxidative CH4 carbonylation through immobilized Ir complexes on an oxide support. Our immobilization approach not only enables direct CH4 activation but also allows for easy separation and reutilization of the catalyst. Furthermore, we show that a key step, methyl migration, that forms a C-C bond, is sensitive to the electrophilicity of carbonyl, which can be tuned by a gentle reduction to the Ir centers. While the as-prepared catalyst that mainly featured Ir(IV) preferred CH3COOH production, a reduced catalyst featuring predominantly Ir(III) led to a significant increase of CH3OH production at the expense of the reduced yield of CH3COOH.

Abstract:A fine-tuned mordenite was prepared to overcome the low selectivity of tert-amyl anthracene production in the direct alkylation of anthracene. Herein, a series of boric acid-modified Fe-Zr mordenite materials were prepared, and tert-amyl anthracene was smoothly and efficiently obtained over these catalysts. The boron sites in modified catalyst promoted the alcohol dehydrogenation, which benefited the reaction conversion. Moreover, the existence of Brønsted and Lewis acid sites was the key in alkylation reaction, making 1.0B-Fe-Zr/MOR good reactivity (Conv. 47.8%, Sel. 91.4%). Calculated results correlated the products properties with catalyst structures, verifying that boric acid-modified Fe-Zr/MOR was a successful shape-selective catalyst. The present work opens a new frontier for a sustainable and high-selective method to process anthracene alkylation.

Abstract:Methanol carbonylation is the most important process for manufacturing C2 molecules from methanol. The present industrial carbonylation has been proven to be the most successful process on economical grounds. However, there is a request to develop more sustainable and ‘green’ processes to overcome the inherent drawbacks. Well-designed cross-linked copolymers were prepared and used as support for the simultaneous immobilization of rhodium and iodide species. The resulting catalyst was proven to be highly active in CH3I-free methanol carbonylation and methyl acetate was the main product. Approximately 90% of methanol was converted after a two-hour reaction time at 120 °C under a CO pressure of 3.0 MPa. The immobilization strategy of the active species works efficiently and the present methanol carbonylation catalyst shows good recyclability. After regenerating the catalyst twice over a fifteen-batches test, the catalyst keeps an acceptable activity. The process based on the present catalyst is evidently a promising sustainable methanol carbonylation.

Abstract:A highly stable MTP (methanol to propylene) catalyst, boron-modified hierarchical nanocrystalline ZSM-5 zeolite, has been constructed by a facile salt-aided seed-induced route. The cooperative effect of its hierarchical structure and modified acidity gives rise to a significantly stable activity (725 h) even at a high WHSV (weight hourly space velocity) of 4.0 h(-1).

Abstract:Selective oxidation of methane to methanol under mild conditions has been considered as a dream reaction but suffers from poor efficiency due to the strong C-H bond of methane and easy overoxidation of the methanol product. For overcoming these problems, a series of strategies has been developed for improving methanol productivity with oxidants of hydrogen peroxide and even a mixture of oxygen and hydrogen at mild temperatures. Significant achievements in these strategies using effective catalysts, such as supported metal nanoparticles, colloidal metal nanoparticles, and metal@zeolites are briefly concluded. Moreover, the current challenges, future perspectives for preparing active, selective, and stable catalysts, have been discussed. The zeolite fixed metal nanoparticle structure has been found to boost the reaction by benefiting the formation and enrichment of peroxide intermediates, which might guide the development of more efficient catalysts.

Abstract:The growing consumption of light olefins has stimulated intensive researches on methanol to olefin (MTO) process which possesses great advantages for coal conversion to value-added chemicals in an environmentally benign way. The catalysts commonly used for MTO process faces several challenges such as poor selectivity control, low hydrothermal stability and short lifetime. In the present study, we prepared a series of mordenite zeolites with variable Al contents (Si/Al molar ratios of 51−436) by a sequential dealumination treatment of air-calcination and acid leaching. The textural properties, acidity and Al location before and after the dealumination treatment have been systematically studied and their effect on MTO especially the methanol to propylene (MTP) performance was thoroughly investigated. The mordenite zeolites with the Si/Al ratios over 150 selectively catalyzed methanol conversion in the MTP pathway, providing a high propylene selectivity of 63% and propylene/ethylene ratio of > 10. Compared to the low-silica MOR catalysts, highly dealuminated MOR showed much higher stability and longer lifetime, which can be further enhanced <em>via</em> harsh hydrothermal pretreatment. Furthermore, the lifetime was highly related to the crystal size along <em>c</em>-axis. The excellent performance of highly dealuminated MOR is likely ascribed to the mesopores formed upon dealumination and the scarce Al sites located in the T sites shared by the 8-member ring (MR) side pockets and 12-MR pore channels.The high-silica MOR catalysts (Si/Al >150) selectively catalyzed the methanol conversion in the methanol to propylene (MTP) way, providing a high propylene selectivity of 63% and a long lifetime of ~130 h. The excellent performance of highly dealuminated MOR is ascribed to the mesopores formed upon dealumination and the scarce Al sites located in the T sites shared by the 8-MR side pockets and 12-MR pore channels as well as the weakened acid strength.

Abstract:Methyl formate (MF) is an important building block in the modern chemical industry, primarily produced through homogeneous carbonylation of methanol under harsh reaction conditions. It is of great interest but remains challenges to develop new heterogeneous catalytic system under mild reaction conditions to replace the homogeneous route. Herein, we report an efficient and green strategy for MF production by dimethoxymethane (DMM) disproportionation over acidic zeolites. Up to nearly 100% DMM conversion and 0.76 g g cat -1 h -1 of MF space time yield (STY) is achieved over H-SSZ-13 under moderate conditions of 0.1 MPa and 393 K. Moreover, H-SSZ-13 shows superior stability during a 100 h continuous test. Combined with multiple characterizations, formaldehyde (FA) has been proved to be a crucial precursor for the formation of MF and the complete mechanism is proposed. This strategy provides a new and feasible approach for continuous large-scale MF production using acidic zeolite as catalyst by heterogeneous catalytic systems.

Methyl Acetate Synthesis from Dimethyl Ether Carbonylation over Mordenite Modified by Cation Exchange

Abstract:Various metal-modified HMOR catalysts for the carbonylation of dimethyl ether (DME) were prepared by ion exchange with Cu, Ni, Co, Zn, or Ag. The catalysts were characterized by the BrunauerEmmettTeller method, X-ray diffraction measurements, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia, and temperature-programmed oxidation. We found that the pore structure of mordenite (HMOR) was well maintained and that the metal species were highly dispersed on the zeolite. On HMOR subjected to ion exchange with Cu, Ni, Co, or Zn, the metal ions were mainly at the zeolite exchange sites with some corresponding metal oxides. Some Bronsted acid sites were converted to Lewis acid sites, and some strong acid sites were formed together. HMOR modified with Cu, Ni, or Co showed good catalytic performance, with Cu/HMOR exhibiting the highest performance. DME conversion and methyl acetate selectivity were close to 100% under the optimum reaction conditions, which is attributed to the joint participation of Bronsted acid sites contributing to DME conversion and metal Lewis acid sites contributing to CO binding, along with the appropriate coordination structure. Modification with Cu not only improved the catalytic activity, but also suppressed carbon deposition and extended the catalyst lifetime.

Abstract:Acetic acid is an important bulk chemical that is currently produced via methanol carbonylation using fossil based CO. Synthesis of acetic acid from the renewable and cheap CO2 is of great importance, but state of the art routes encounter difficulties, especially in reaction selectivity and activity. Here we report a route to produce acetic acid from CO2, methanol and H2. The reaction can be efficiently catalysed by Ru–Rh bimetallic catalyst using imidazole as the ligand and LiI as the promoter in 1,3-dimethyl-2-imidazolidinone (DMI) solvent. It is confirmed that methanol is hydrocarboxylated into acetic acid by CO2 and H2, which accounts for the outstanding reaction results. The reaction mechanism is proposed based on the control experiments. The strategy opens a new way for acetic acid production and CO2 transformation, and represents a significant progress in synthetic chemistry.

Breaking the Conversion-Selectivity Trade-Off in Methanol Synthesis from CO2 Using Dual Intimate Oxide/Metal Interfaces

Abstract:The selective hydrogenation of carbon dioxide (CO2) to value-added chemicals, e.g., methanol, using green hydrogen retrieved from renewable resources is a promising approach for CO2 emission reduction and carbon resource utilization. However, this process suffers from the competing side reaction of reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) and methanol decomposition, which often leads to a strong conversion-selectivity trade-off and thus a poor methanol yield. Here, we report that InOx coating of PdCu bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) to construct intimate InOx/Cu and InOx/PdIn dual interfaces enables the break of conversion-selectivity trade-off by achieving ∼80% methanol selectivity at ∼20% CO2 conversion close to the thermodynamic limit, far superior to that of conventional metal catalysts with a single active metal/oxide interface. Comprehensive microscopic and spectroscopic characterization revealed that the InOx/PdIn interface favors the activation of CO2 to formate, while the adjacent InOx/Cu interface readily converts formate intermediates to methoxy species in tandem, which thus cooperatively boosts methanol production. These findings of dual-interface synergies via oxide coating of bimetallic NPs open a new avenue to the design of active and selective catalysts for advanced catalysis.
Optimizing reaction paths for methanol synthesis from CO2 hydrogenation via metal-ligand cooperativity

Abstract:As diversified reaction paths exist over practical catalysts towards CO2 hydrogenation, it is highly desiderated to precisely control the reaction path for developing efficient catalysts. Herein, we report that the ensemble of Pt single atoms coordinated with oxygen atoms in MIL-101 (Pt1@MIL) induces distinct reaction path to improve selective hydrogenation of CO2 into methanol. Pt1@MIL achieves the turnover frequency number of 117 h−1 in DMF under 32 bar at 150 °C, which is 5.6 times that of Ptn@MIL. Moreover, the selectivity for methanol is 90.3% over Pt1@MIL, much higher than that (13.3%) over Ptn@MIL with CO as the major product. According to mechanistic studies, CO2 is hydrogenated into HCOO* as the intermediate for Pt1@MIL, whereas COOH* serves as the intermediate for Ptn@MIL. The unique reaction path over Pt1@MIL not only lowers the activation energy for the enhanced catalytic activity, but also contributes to the high selectivity for methanol.

Abstract:The precise C-C coupling is a challenging goal in C1 chemistry. The conversion of methanol, a cheap and easily available C1 feedstock, into value-added and largely demanded olefins has been playing a game-changing role in the production of olefins. The current methanol-to-olefin (MTO) process, however, suffers from limited selectivity to a specific olefin. Here, we present a relay-catalysis route for the high-selective conversion of methanol to ethylene in syngas (H2/CO) typically used for methanol synthesis. A bifunctional catalyst composed of selectively dealuminated H-MOR zeolite and ZnO-TiO2, which implemented methanol carbonylation with CO to acetic acid and selective acetic acid hydrogenation to ethylene in tandem, offered ethylene selectivity of 85% at complete methanol conversion at 583 K. The selective removal of Brønsted acid sites in the 12-membered ring channel of H-MOR favors the selectivity of acetic acid in CH3OH carbonylation. The high capabilities of ZnO-TiO2 in the adsorption of acetic acid and the activation of H2 play key roles in selective hydrogenation of acetic acid to ethylene. Our work provides a promising relay-catalysis strategy for precise C-C coupling of C1 to C2 molecules.

Abstract:Direct transformation of methane into methanol with high selectivity under mild conditions is one of the holy grails in catalysis. The major challenges arise from the high stability of the primary C-H bonds and the facile overoxidation of methanol. Among the numerous catalytic materials applied, Cu/Fe-containing zeolite catalysts have garnered considerable efforts and intensive investigation due to their significant advantages and distinctive potential in direct and selective oxidation of methane into methanol. In this Prospect, we present the recent progress of the application of Cu/Fe-containing zeolites as catalysts for the direct oxidation of methane into methanol. Furthermore, the state-of-the-art ex / in situ characterization techniques applied to understand the intrinsic active sites and reaction mechanisms for Cu/Fe-containing zeolites are also highlighted. Finally, the open challenges and opportunities regarding rational design of catalysts, the development of correlative in situ / operando characterization technologies and the feasible approaches by coupling with external energy resources or with other promising C-C coupling processes, are examined for inspiring future directions.
