Abstract:The triple-component composites (rGO/TiO2/CN) were fabricated from the mixtures of the reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets, anatase TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs), and graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) via simple mechanical stirring followed by calcination process. The rGO/TiO2/CN-0.75 sample with the optimal weight ratio exhibits improved photocatalytic activity, evidenced by methylene blue degradation, which is attributed to the synergistic effect of the incorporation of rGO and g-C3N4 with TiO2. The porous-layered structure of rGO and g-C3N4 encourages excellent dispersion of TiO2 NPs and consequently increases absorption sites and photocatalytic reaction sites. Meanwhile, the g-C3N4 expands visible-light absorption range and enhances the light harvest. Furthermore, rGO accelerates the photogenerated carrier separation and effectively suppresses charge recombination in the composites due to the excellent conductivity. The results provide a facile and promising strategy for enhancing the photocatalytic performance of TiO2-based composite photocatalysts.
Novel C3N4–CdS Composite Photocatalysts with Organic–inorganic Heterojunctions: in Situ Synthesis, Exceptional Activity, High Stability and Photocatalytic Mechanism

Abstract:Novel organic-inorganic composites composed of two visible light responsive semiconductors of graphitic carbon nitride (C3N4) and CdS were successfully synthesized via an "in situ" precipitation-deposition method. The C3N4-CdS heterostructures were fabricated by depositing CdS nanoparticles onto the surface of C3N4. The morphology and optical property of compsoites can be tuned by adjusting the mass ratio of C3N4-CdS, which determines the enhanced level of photocatalytic activity. The optimum activity of 0.7C(3)N(4)-0.3CdS photocatalyst is almost 20.5 and 3.1 times higher than those of individual C3N4 and CdS for the degradation of methyl orange, and 41.6 and 2.7 fold higher for the degradation of 4-aminobenzoic acid, respectively. Moreover, its activity is also much higher than those of C3N4-TiO2 and CdS-TiO2 composites, as well as N-modified TiO2. Of special significance is that the present C3N4-CdS composites exhibit high stabilities under illumination, in contrast with CdS. The enhancement in both performance and stability should be assigned to the effective separation and transfer of photogenerated charges originating from the well-matched overlapping band-structures and closely contacted interfaces. Our work highlights that coupling semiconductors with well-matched band energies provides a flexible route to improve the activity and stability of photocatalysts, and gives ideas for the design and synthesis of other highly active and stable materials.

Abstract:Framework modification of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) with organic molecules is recognized as an effective strategy to enhance its photocatalytic performance by improving the charge separation in g-C3N4. In this work, pyromellitic diimide (PD) with strong electron-withdrawing ability and conjugated structure was linked to g-C3N4 skeleton by simple solution blending to prepare a composite of g-C3N4 @PD. It is found that the resultant composite exhibited much higher photocatalytic activity than pristine g-C3N4 in the photodegradation of an anionic dye of sulforhodamine B (SRB). Specifically, the composite with PD of 1% in weight ratio showed a degradation rate constant 3.8 times and 5.1 times that of g-C3N4 under the illumination of visible light and ultra violet light, respectively. Moreover, g-C3N4 @PD revealed highly selective photodegradation in favor of a cationic dye of malachite green in its mixture with the anionic dye of SRB, which is attributed to preferential adsorption of the cationic dye onto the negatively charged photocatalyst. In addition, the composite maintained a high photodegradation efficiency of 98.2% at the end of five cycles of the photodegradation of SRB, suggesting good photocatalytic stability. It is proposed that enhanced photocatalytic activity of the composite is related to the electron-withdrawing effect of PD, which facilitates the separation of photo-induced electrons from the g-C3N4 skeleton to the boundary PD to inhibit the recombination of the photogenerated electron/hole pairs in g-C3N4 skeleton. The facilely prepared g-C3N4 @PD is a promising photocatalyst in environmental remediation.
Graphene Quantum Dots Modified Mesoporous Graphite Carbon Nitride with Significant Enhancement of Photocatalytic Activity

Abstract:Hydroxyl-graphene quantum dots (GQDs) modified mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride (mpg-C3N4) composites were fabricated through electrostatic interactions. A variety of techniques were applied to discuss systematic effect on the morphology, optical, electronic properties and structure of GQDs/mpg-C3N4 composites. Remarkably, the 0.5 wt% GQDsimpg-C3N4 composites exhibited higher photocatalytic activity than that of the pure mpg-C3N4 by using rhodamine B (RhB) and colorless tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) as pollutants under visible light irradiation. The results indicated that uniform dispersion of GQDs on the surface of mpg-C3N4 and intimate contact between the two materials contributed to the enhanced activity. Radical trapping experiments and electron spin resonance tests both certified that the GQDsimpg-C3N4 composites can generate more center dot O-2(-) species and a small fraction of holes for photocatalytic degradation. Abstract:The photocatalytic property of graphitic carbon nitride (CN) has attracted more and more attention. In this study, to provide a convenient way to recycle the suspension catalyst of C3N5, C3N5 nanoparticles had been successfully coated on the surface of SiO2@Fe3O4 (S@F) core-shell layer, forming a novel multifunctional nano-core-shell magnetic material Fe3O4@SiO2/C3N5. The as-prepared photocatalyst could effectively improve the photocatalytic performance of C3N5, such as higher H2 production from water splitting and MB photodegradation ability. The H2 yield of Fe3O4@SiO2/C3N5 composite is up to 3.0 mmol/g after 6 h, which is about 2 times higher than pure C3N5. And the MB degradation rate is 1.6 times higher than pure C3N5. The mechanism results revealed that Fe3O4@SiO2/C3N5 exhibited a rougher surface, wider absorption range, and lower recombination rate of photogenerated e− and h+ compared to pure C3N5. This study exhibits fascinating potential application of C3N5 in wide range of energy generation and environmental applications.

Abstract:Utilizing and reducing carbon dioxide is a key target in the fight against global warming. The photocatalytic performance of bulk graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is usually limited by its low surface area and rapid charge carrier recombination. To develop g-C3N4 more suitable for photocatalysis, researchers have to enlarge its surface area and accelerate the charge carrier separation. In this work, novel hybrid graphitic carbon nitride and carbon (H-g-C3N4/C) composites with various carbon contents have been developed for the first time by a facile one-step pyrolysis method using melamine and natural soybean oil as precursors. The effect of carbon content on the structure of H-g-C3N4/C composites and the catalytic activity for the photoreduction of CO2 with H2O were investigated. The results indicated that the introduction of carbon component can effectively improve the textural properties and electronic conductivity of the composites, which exhibited imporved photocatalytic activity for the reduction of CO2 with H2O in comparison with bulk g-C3N4. The highest CO and CH4 yield of 22.60 μmol/g-cat. and 12.5 μmol/g-cat., respectively, were acquired on the H-g-C3N4/C-6 catalyst with the carbon content of 3.77 wt % under 9 h simulated solar irradiation, which were more than twice as high as that of bulk g-C3N4. The remarkably increased photocatalytic performance arises from the synergistic effect of hybrid carbon and g-C3N4.
Renewable biomass-derived carbon-supported g-C3N4 doped with Ag for enhanced photocatalytic reduction of CO2

Abstract:Constructing noble metal-doped g-C3N4/carbon composites is a feasible route to overcome the intrinsic drawbacks of pristine g-C3N4 for enhanced activity of CO2 photoreduction. Herein, a novel Ag-doped g-C3N4/biomass-derived carbon composite with hollow bird's nest-like (Ag-g-C3N4/BN-C) is designed and prepared via a simple yet effective one-step pyrolysis method. In the Ag-g-C3N4/BN-C, the highly-dispersed Ag nanoparticles (20-30 nm) with the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect act as a significant cocatalyst not only to efficiently trap the photogenerated electrons from g-C3N4 to boost the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs but also to produce additional active "hot electrons", while the conductive quasi-spherical hollow structure of BN-C doubles the specific surface area with multiple reflections of light, providing abundant active sites and more utilization efficiency of light energy. As a result, the Ag-g-C3N4/BN-C exhibits a remarkably enhanced CO evolution rate of 33.3 μmol·g-1·h-1 without addition of any sacrificial reagents and photosensitizers, superior to those of both the pristine g-C3N4 and many reported g-C3N4-based counterparts. The findings of this work demonstrate a good indication for integrating g-C3N4 with SPR-dependence noble metal and renewable biomass-derived carbon for enhanced CO2 photoreduction, which may be extended to modify other semiconductor materials for more photocatalytic applications with enhanced activity.

Abstract:A novel g-C3N4 composite photocatalyst was synthesized by one-step calcination using melamine and different functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) as raw materials. The effect of additives on the photocatalytic performance of the composite g-C3N4 has been investigated. The results showed that the incorporation of functionalized MWCNT led to a porous structure in g-C3N4, increasing the specific surface area and availability of active sites. The addition of hydroxylated/carboxylated MWCNT (HMWCNT/CMWCNT) affected the band structure of g-C3N4 and reduced the band gap. The visible-light photocatalytic degradation efficiency of Rhodamine B (RhB) using g-C3N4 composited with various types and amounts of MWCNT was evaluated. Among them, g-C3N4 with 1 wt% CMWCNT showed the highest photocatalytic degradation efficiency of RhB and still had 92.71% photocatalytic activity after 5 cycles of degradation.

Abstract:Controllable synthesis of mesoporous photocatalysts is of great interest for the photocatalytic remediation of organic pollutants from wastewater by sunlight. In this work, we have developed a new photocatalyst with nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) and mesoporous TiO2 (mTiO2) interpenetrating hetero-structure by a sol–gel process combined with an in situ carbonization strategy. The synthesized nanospheres possess a uniform particle size (~ 60 nm), high surface area (~ 108 m2/g), and large pore diameter (~ 2.1 nm). Most importantly, the nanospheres consist of ultrasmall TiO2 nanocrystals (~ 8.2 nm), which are uniformly coated by a thin layer of N-doped carbon. Significantly, the resultant NC/mTiO2 composite nanospheres exhibit a broad light absorption in the range of 200–2000 nm (entire wavelength). When serving as a photocatalyst for organic pollutants degradation, high performance was obtained. Accordingly, the resultant NC/mTiO2 composite nanospheres performed in an excellent manner in the photodegradation of methyl orange, and the total removal efficiency was up to 97.7%, much better than that of commercial P25 (19.8%). Furthermore, the nanocomposite also effectively photodegraded other organic pollutants such as methylene blue (dyestuff) and phenol, respectively. Therefore, the resultant NC/mTiO2 nanocomposites have potential applications in environmental cleanup.

Abstract:We synthesized a metal-free photocatalyst comprising mesoporous carbon nitride (mpg-C3N4) and carbon nanotubes (CNT), via a facile method involving polymerization of melamine as the precursor in the presence of CNT in refluxing methanol. Under visible light, the CNT/mpg-C3N4 composite resulted in a greater than 8.6 × faster rhodamine B photodecomposition rate compared with bulk graphitic C3N4, and 1.6 × faster compared with pure mpg-C3N4. We attribute the promoted photocatalytic performance of the composite to the synergistic effects of open-ended CNT and mpg-C3N4. The highly interconnected CNT in mpg-C3N4 effectively enhances the transfer of photo-generated electrons, harvests more incident visible light, and provides specific channels for oxygen adsorption and photoreactions. We propose a possible reaction mechanism and report a scavenger experiment that found that superoxide radical (·O2−) is mainly responsible for dye photodegradation. The CNT/mpg-C3N4 retained good stability after several cycles. This work supplies a promising method of exploiting a stable, metal-free, efficient, and visible light-driven semiconductor to enhance solar energy use for environmental remediation.

Abstract:A facile one-step hydrothermal process is presented for fabrication of graphitic carbon nitride/carbon nanodots (g-C3N4/C-dots) composite photocatalyst. XRD, SEM, TEM, UV-Vis DRS and PL were adopted to analyze the effect of C-dots modification on the structure and properties of g-C3N4. Photocatalytic activity of g-C3N4/C-dotswas evaluated by the degradation ofmethyl orange (MO) under different conditions. The results show that C-dots can increase photocatalytic reaction rate of g-C3N4/C-dots composite under visible-light irradiation, especially in the presence of H2O2. C-dots act as electron-sinks, therefore preventing the recombination of photo-generated electron-hole pairs. Meanwhile, H2O2 not only acts as an oxygen-donor to make contribution to generation of O-2, but can directly react with the photo-generated electrons transferred from the conduction band of g-C3N4 to C-dots, leading to the formation of center dot OH active group, which promotes the degradation of MO. Therefore the photocatalytic activities of g-C3N4/C-dots can be improved significantly when adding H2O2 to the photocatalytic reaction system. (C) 2017 The Electrochemical Society. Abstract:Utilizing photocatalysis technology to convert solar energy into chemical energy or direct degradation and mineralization of organic pollutants is a long-term solution to solve the problem of energy shortage and environmental pollution. Polymer type graphite carbon nitride (g-C3N4) possesses a similar structure with graphene and has been attracted widespread attention as a novel photocatalyst for the light catalytic conversion of solar energy due to its excellent chemical stability and unique electronic band structure. Moreover, the g-C3N4 can be used as a low-cost, stable and metal-free visible-light-driven photocatalyst in the degradation of pollutants, water splitting for hydrogen and oxygen evolution and organic synthesis, as the precursors of g-C3N4 are inexpensive and the synthesis is comparatively simple. Many efforts are still needed to overcome the limitation of fast recombination for pure g-C3N4 in practical application. In this review, recent research progress for g-C3N4 has been reviewed, including metal/non-mental doping, semiconductor coupling, depositing with metals. In addition, the catalytic mechanism for the g-C3N4-based composite is also reviewed.
0D NiS2 quantum dots modified 2D g-C3N4 for efficient photocatalytic CO2 reduction

Abstract:Photoreduction carbon dioxide to hydrocarbons has been recognized as one of the most promising and sustainable solutions to realize solar-to-chemical energy conversion and alleviate environmental pollution. Herein, we prepared g-C3N4 photocatalyst modified by NiS2 quantum dots as co-catalyst based on a seed-mediated hydrothermal process. The composite showed superior activity and stability in photocatalytic CO2 reduction. The highest CO evolution rate of 10.68 μmol h−1 g−1 was obtained on NSQD/CN-25 catalyst, which was 3.88-fold as high as unadulterated g-C3N4, and its apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) was 2.03% at 420 nm. During the photoconversion process, the possible intermediate products (such as C O O - , C O 2 - and H C O 3 - ) were detected by in situ FTIR analysis. Notably, the electron transfer from g-C3N4 to NiS2 QDs could effectively accelerate the separation of photoexcited electron–hole pairs. This work paves a new strategy toward designing cost-effective photocatalyst with high performance for photocatalytic CO2 reduction.

Enhanced photocatalytic performance of CuS/O,N-CNT composite for solar-driven organic contaminant degradation

Abstract:Herein, a hydrothermal etching approach was used to generate an innovative CuS/O,N-CNT composite. The hydrothermal etching of g-C3N4 led to the creation of O,N-CNT, with ethanol as the oxygen source. The SEM and TEM characterizations confirmed the formation of CNT, whereas the XPS analysis proved the doping of oxygen and nitrogen in the CNT matrix along with the incorporation of CuS. Under sun irradiation, the produced CuS/O,N-CNT showed outstanding photocatalytic efficiency, eliminating methyl orange and methylene blue dyes with 97.21% and 98.11% efficacy, respectively. Adding hydrothermally etched O,N-CNT increased light absorption and charge migration kinetics, as can be studied from the UV-DRS and PL analysis; hence, the observed improvements in light absorption and charge transfer pathways contributed to the CuS/O,N-CNT composite's enhanced photocatalytic activity, indicating its potential for efficient elimination of organic contaminants under solar irradiation. The catalyst demonstrated high reusability performance up to six cycles and significantly degraded other dyes. Scavenger analysis, along with VB-XPS and UV-DRS analysis, aid in developing a photocatalytic mechanism that confirms the participation of hydroxyl and superoxide radicals in the degradation process.

Abstract:As a metal-free polymer, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) has spurred extensive consideration over their inorganic counterparts due to the unique physical and chemical properties. However, the low specific surface area, high charge recombination rate and insufficient light absorption limit its application in the field of photocatalysis. Sulfur doping has been demonstrated as an efficient strategy for to promote light absorption and radiative carrier separation. On the basis of sulfur-doped carbon nitride, many of its modified composites have been synthesized and applied in photocatalysis, and have achieved dazzling results. Here, we introduce the basic properties of sulfur doped carbon nitride and its preparation method, and then discuss the effective method of controlling the introduction of sulfur doped g-C 3 N 4 . In addition, the achievement of sulfur doped g-C 3 N 4 for several applications, including water splitting, carbon dioxide reduction, organic compounds degradation, inorganic matter transformation, nitrogen fixation and bacteria disinfection, were comprehensively reviewed. Finally, outstanding challenges and prospective perspectives are discussed, which might provide a new idea for the photocatalysts design for photocatalytic activity improvement.

Abstract:The g-C3N4/diatomite (g-C3N4/DT) composites were prepared by a one-step thermal polycondensation method using melamine and diatomite as sources. The photocatalytic properties of the g-C3N4/DT composites with different mass ratios of melamine to diatomite were investigated by degradation of RhB under visible light and simulated solar irradiation. When the amount of carbon nitride loaded onto diatomite is appropriate, the obtained S600-10-3 exhibits a degradation rate of 98.3 % toward RhB under visible light irradiation for 30 min. The reaction rate constant of S600-10-3 under visible light is 0.124 min−1, which is 2.25 times that of g-C3N4 (0.055 min−1) and 6.89 times that of P25. In addition, S600-10-3 has good photochemical stability and reusability for RhB degradation. Additionally, S600-10-3 also shows a high degradation rate of 97.3 % toward TC. Hole, superoxide radicals and singlet oxygen are responsible for the photodegradation of RhB, while the active species for TC photocatalytic degradation are holes and superoxide radicals. The mineralization rates of RhB and TC over S600-10-3 are around 95.4 and 66.8 % after 30 and 80 min visible-light irradiation, respectively. The outstanding photocatalytic efficiency of g-C3N4/DT composite (S600-10-3) is attributed to the porous lamellar/tubular structure of carbon nitride with nitrogen vacancies, the reduced recombination rate of the photogenerated electrons and holes, and the synergistic effect of diatomite and carbon nitride.

Abstract:The fast industrialization and urbanization process has led to the serious water pollution problems that need to be resolved urgently. In this paper, activated carbon/g-C3N4 composite photocatalysts (ACN) were synthesized by a simple calcination technique. The catalysts were examined by SEM, TEM, XRD, FTIR, PL, XPS, and UV–vis DRS. The catalyst ACN exhibited better photocatalytic activity than pure g-C3N4, where ACN3 showed excellent photocatalytic activity of 98.6 %, 98.97 % and 98 % on rhodamine B (RhB), carmine and TC degradation under visible light, respectively. The introduction of activated carbon broadened the absorption range of the catalyst towards visible light, improved the electron transfer efficiency and suppressed the photogenerated electron-hole recombination. After four cycles of experiments, the catalyst ACN3 still showed high activity for the degradation of RhB and carmine. Based on the analytical results, the possible mechanism of photocatalytic degradation was proposed. This work demonstrates a facile and efficient method to improve the performance of g-C3N4-based catalysts.

Abstract:Gd2O3 nanoparticles modified g-C3N4 photocatalytic composites were synthesized by a simple one-step hydrothermal method. The structure, morphology, optical properties of the prepared photocatalyst were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), field emission transmission electron microscopy (FETEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The result demonstrates that gadolinium is mainly dispersed on the surface of g-C3N4 in the form of Gd2O3, and does not destroy the lattice structure of g-C3N4. Besides, the gadolinium can cause the red shift of the absorption edge of light, narrow the band gap, and increase the separation efficiency of the photogenerated electron and hole of g-C3N4. Especially, the specific surface area of g-C3N4 can be significantly increased. Furthermore, g-C3N4/Gd-0.05 displays the highest photodegradation performance when it is used for degradation of methyl orange (MO), methylene blue (MB) and Rhodamine B (RhB). The photodegradation rate of g-C3N4/Gd-0.05 composites is 72.4% for MO, 95.5% for RhB, 100% for MB after 120 min under visible light (λ > 420 nm) irradiation. Narrow band gap promotes the separation of photogenerated electron and hole, which enhances the photocatalytic activity of g-C3N4. It is noted that g-C3N4/Gd-0.05 exhibits excellent photocatalytic stability by the photocurrent and the cyclic photodegradation of MO.

Abstract:The proper design of photocatalysts is essential to improving photocatalytic decomposition of water and degradation of pollutants. In this work, we used nitrogen-rich carbon nitride with high electronic properties combined with CdS-DETA to generate CdS-DETA@g-C3N5 composite, and diethylenetriamine (DETA) was used to enhance the band bending to enable the excellent photocatalytic performance of the photocatalyst. The hydrogen evolution rate (14.23 mmol/(g·h)) of the CdS-DETA@g-C3N5 composite is 7.1, 7.5, and 4.5 times higher than that of g-C3N5 (2.03 mmol/(g·h)), 20CSCN5 (1.89 mmol/(g·h)), and CdS-DETA (3.17 mmol/(g·h)), and the OFLX degradation rate (95.6 %) is 3.4 and 1.5 times higher than that of g-C3N5 and CdS-DETA, respectively. These performance enhancements result from the enhancement of energy band bending, the construction of a built-in electric field (IEF), and the retention of high redox carriers. This work provides new insights into the design of nitrogen-rich carbon nitride-based photocatalyst for efficient photocatalytic degradation and hydrogen precipitation activity.

Abstract:Fe-containing polyoxometalate clusters were coupled with carbon nitride to construct heterogeneous Fenton-like photocatalysts. Oxygen doping of carbon nitride was beneficial for the formation of strongly coupled interfaces, which not only contributed to the surface activation of oxygen molecules, but also facilitated the charge transfer from carbon nitride to polyoxometalate clusters. Due to the enhanced ability for generating peroxide radicals and the increased reactive sites for Fenton-like reactions, strongly coupled composites presented 6 times higher activity for the degradation of sulfosalicylic acid, compared to pristine carbon nitride. Our work offers an avenue to construct polyoxometalates/carbon nitride composite catalysts for synergistic contaminant removal.
