Abstract:Chitosan stabilized iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (Chit-MNPs) were prepared with the theoretical Chit/Fe3O4 weight ratios equal to 0.5, 1, 2, 3 w/w and characterized by different techniques. The effect of various Chit/Fe3O4 weight ratios on the samples’ hydrodynamic diameter, zeta potential, and isoelectric point was studied by the dynamic light-scattering method. Using TEM analysis, the average magnetic core size was found to be ranging from 6 nm to 9 nm. The obtained results are comparable to those from magnetic measurements. The magnetic measurements confirmed successful chitosan coating on MNPs by means of the decrease in saturation magnetizations from 69.2 emu·g−1 for unmodified MNPs to 66.6, 65.9, 65.5 and 65.2 emu·g−1 for Chit-MNPs at different ratios of Chit/MNPs 0.5, 1, 2, and 3. TGA was used to quantify the amount of chitosan adsorbed on MNPs surface – the max. amount was 0.045 mg chitosan/mg MNPs. The peroxidase-like catalytic activity of unmodified MNPs and chitosan Chit-MNPs in present of a substrate such as N,N-diethyl-p-phenylenediamine sulfate salt (DPD) and hydrogen peroxide was studied. The results confirmed the peroxidase-like activity of samples, – they catalytically oxidise substrate DPD by H2O2 to produce a typical colour reaction. The chitosan coating was found to slightly decrease catalytic activity compared to MNPs at pH 7.4. Despite the fact, these findings can be useful for creating sets of MNPs and Chit-MNPs samples possessing predefined peroxidase-like activity and could be applied for chromogenic reactions in the future.

Abstract:Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) are a promising tool for biomedical applications, including drug delivery, imaging, and magnetic hyperthermia. However, their tendency to agglomerate limits their performance efficiency. To overcome this limitation, a coating can be applied during. This work investigates the effect of three biocompatible coatings, namely citrate, (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES), and dextran, on controlling the agglomeration of iron oxide nanoparticles. Various experimental techniques were used to characterize the structural and magnetic properties of the coated nanoparticles, including cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM), magnetometry, Mössbauer spectroscopy, and small angle X-ray and neutron scattering. The results indicate that the coatings effectively stabilize the nanoparticles, leading to clusters of different sizes that modify their magnetic behaviour due to magnetic interparticle interactions. The oxidation kinetics of the nanoparticles prepared with the various coating materials were investigated to characterize their oxidation behavior and stability over time. This research provides valuable insights into the design of an optimized nanoparticle functionalization strategy for biomedical applications.

1H-NMR Relaxation of Ferrite Core-Shell Nanoparticles: Evaluation of the Coating Effect

Abstract:We investigated the effect of different organic coatings on the 1H-NMR relaxation properties of ultra-small iron-oxide-based magnetic nanoparticles. The first set of nanoparticles, with a magnetic core diameter ds1 = 4.4 ± 0.7 nm, was coated with polyacrylic acid (PAA) and dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA), while the second set, ds2 = 8.9 ± 0.9 nm, was coated with aminopropylphosphonic acid (APPA) and DMSA. At fixed core diameters but different coatings, magnetization measurements revealed a similar behavior as a function of temperature and field. On the other hand, the 1H-NMR longitudinal r1 nuclear relaxivity in the frequency range ν = 10 kHz ÷ 300 MHz displayed, for the smallest particles (diameter ds1), an intensity and a frequency behavior dependent on the kind of coating, thus indicating different electronic spin dynamics. Conversely, no differences were found in the r1 relaxivity of the biggest particles (ds2) when the coating was changed. It is concluded that, when the surface to volume ratio, i.e., the surface to bulk spins ratio, increases (smallest nanoparticles), the spin dynamics change significantly, possibly due to the contribution of surface spin dynamics/topology.
Characterisation of Fe-oxide nanoparticles coated with humic acid and Suwannee River natural organic matter

Abstract:Iron oxide nanoparticles are becoming increasingly popular for various applications including the treatment of contaminated soil and groundwater; however, their mobility and reactivity in the subsurface environment are significantly affected by their tendency to aggregate. One solution to overcome this issue is to coat the nanoparticles with dissolved organic matter (DOM). The advantages of DOM over conventional surface modifiers are that DOM is naturally abundant in the environment, inexpensive, non-toxic and readily adsorbed onto the surface of metal oxide nanoparticles. In this study, humic acid (HA) and Suwannee River natural organic matter (SRNOM) were tested and compared as surface modifiers for Fe2O3 nanoparticles (NPs). The DOM-coated Fe2O3 NPs were characterised by various analytical methods including: flow field-flow fractionation (FlFFF), high performance size exclusion chromatography (HPSEC) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The stability of the coated NPs was then evaluated by assessing their aggregation and disaggregation behaviour over time. Results showed that both HA and SRNOM were rapidly and readily adsorbed on the surface of Fe2O3 NPs, providing electrosteric stabilisation over a wide range of pH. HPSEC results showed that the higher molecular weight components of DOM were preferentially adsorbed onto the surface of Fe2O3. As SRNOM consists of macromolecules with a higher molecular weight than HA, the measured size of the SRNOM-coated Fe2O3 NPs was 30% larger than the HA-coated Fe2O3 NPs. FTIR results indicated the occurrence of hydrogen bonding arising from electrostatic interaction between the DOM and Fe2O3 NPs. Finally, a stability study showed that after 14 days, small agglomerates and aggregates were formed. The HA-coated Fe2O3 NPs formed agglomerates which were easily disaggregated using a vortex mixer, with the coated NPs returning to their initial size. However, SRNOM-coated Fe2O3 NPs were only partially disaggregated using the same method, which indicates that these aggregates have a more compact structure.

Abstract:Magnetic nanoparticles are becoming increasingly important for several biomedical applications. For example, superparamagnetic magnetite nanoparticles with suitable bio-compatible coatings are useful in magnetic resonance imaging, tissue engineering, and drug delivery, etc. In this study we report the synthesis of magnetite nanoparticles and the further coating of these particles by several types of protective layers. Thermodynamic modeling of the chemical system has been adopted as a rational approach to establish routes to better synthesis conditions for pure phase magnetite. Quantitative analysis of different reaction equilibria involved in the precipitation of magnetite from aqueous solutions has been used to determine optimum synthesis conditions. Superparamagnetic magnetite nanoparticles (SPION) with diameters of 6 and 12 nm have been prepared by controlled chemical coprecipitation of magnetite phase from aqueous solutions containing suitable salts of Fe2+ and Fe3+ under inert atmosphere. Pure magnetite phase SPION could be observed from X-ray diffraction. Magnetic colloid suspensions containing particles with three different types of coatings (sodium oleate (NaOl), starch, and methoxypoly(ethylene glycol) (MPEG)) have been prepared by using different stabilization methods. SPION coatings were studied by determining the change of the surface charge by electrokinetic sonic amplitude (ESA) measurements, as a function of varying NaOl in the solution, where the amount of NaOl needed to form a stable suspension was determined. For stable suspension, the optimum concentration of sodium oleate (NaOl) chemisorbed at 2.5 g of SPION surface is 5.2 × 10-7 M NaOl which shows maximum ESA value of 0.034 mPa·M/V. SPION coating by starch results in the formation of agglomerate. The agglomeration size of starch-coated SPION can be decreased by introducing H2O2 as an oxidizing agent; the resulting particle size is 42 nm as determined by dynamic light scattering (DLS). For the modification of SPION surfaces with MPEG, the surface was first silanized by 3-aminopropyltrimethoxy silane (APTMS) as a coupling agent with a thickness of two or three molecular layers. AFM image shows that each cluster includes several magnetite single particles with the cluster size around 120 nm. SPION, both coated and uncoated, have been characterized by several techniques. AFM was used to image the MPEG-coated SPION. FTIR study indicated that the different coating agents cover the SPION surface. Magnetic characterization was carried out using SQUID and Mössbauer spectroscopy.

Abstract:In this work, 6 to 12 nm iron oxide nanoparticles were synthesized and coated with poly(acrylic acid) chains of molecular weight 2100 g/mol. Based on a quantitative evaluation of the dispersions, the bare and coated particles were thoroughly characterized. The number densities of polymers adsorbed at the particle surface and of available chargeable groups were found to be 1.9 +/- 0.3 nm-2 and 26 +/- 4 nm-2, respectively. Occurring via a multi-site binding mechanism, the electrostatic coupling leads to a solid and resilient anchoring of the chains. To assess the efficacy of the particles for pollutant remediation, the adsorption isotherm of methylene blue molecules, a model of pollutant, was determined. The excellent agreement between the predicted and measured amounts of adsorbed dyes suggests that most carboxylates participate to the complexation and adsorption mechanisms. An adsorption of 830 mg/g was obtained. This quantity compares well with the highest values available for this dye.

Abstract:Special carbon-coated iron core/shell nanoparticles have been synthesized via a simple chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process. The experimental results show the iron nanoparticles are really encapsulated within an inhomogeneous carbon layer. The formation of amorphous carbon layer as well as the magnetic Fe nanoparticles makes this core/shell structure exhibit good drug adsorption and release capability, suggesting potential applications in targeted drug delivery systems.

Abstract:Nanoparticle physicochemical properties such as surface charge are considered to play an important role in cellular uptake and particle–cell interactions. In order to systematically evaluate the role of surface charge on the uptake of iron oxide nanoparticles, we prepared carboxymethyl-substituted dextrans with different degrees of substitution, ranging from 38 to 5 groups per chain, and reacted them using carbodiimide chemistry with amine–silane-coated iron oxide nanoparticles with narrow size distributions in the range of 33–45 nm. Surface charge of carboxymethyl-substituted dextran-coated nanoparticles ranged from −50 to 5 mV as determined by zeta potential measurements, and was dependent on the number of carboxymethyl groups incorporated in the dextran chains. Nanoparticles were incubated with CaCo-2 human colon cancer cells. Nanoparticle–cell interactions were observed by confocal laser scanning microscopy and uptake was quantified by elemental analysis using inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy. Mechanisms of internalization were inferred using pharmacological inhibitors for fluid-phase, clathrin-mediated, and caveola-mediated endocytosis. Results showed increased uptake for nanoparticles with greater negative charge. Internalization patterns suggest that uptake of the most negatively charged particles occurs via non-specific interactions.

Abstract:This paper describes a new method for the dispersing and surface-functionalization of metal oxide magnetic nanoparticles (10 nm) with poly(allylamine) (PAA). In this approach, Fe3O4 nanoparticles, prepared with diethanolamine (DEA) as the surface capping agent in diethyleneglycol (DEG) and methanol, are ligand exchanged with PAA. This method allows the dispersing of magnetic nanoparticles into individual or small clusters of 2–5 nanoparticles in aqueous solutions. The resulting nanoparticles are water soluble and stable for months. The PAA stabilized Fe3O4 nanoparticles are characterized by TEM, TGA, and FT-IR. The PAA-coated Fe3O4 nanoparticles will allow further chemical tailoring and engineering of their surfaces for biomedical applications.

Abstract:This study explores the enhancement of magnetic properties in Fe2O3 nanoparticles through carbon coating. Using a solvothermal method, Fe2O3 and carbon‐coated Fe2O3 nanoparticles are synthesized, analyzing their structural, morphological, optical, and magnetic properties. Carbon coating significantly reduces particle size and agglomeration, improving coercivity, remanence, and saturation magnetization, which enhance magnetic behavior for applications in devices and biomedical systems. In this study, the enhancement of magnetic properties in Fe2O3 nanoparticles through nanostructural modification via carbon coating is investigated. Fe2O3 and carbon‐coated Fe2O3 nanoparticles are synthesized using the solvothermal method. Structural, morphological, optical, and magnetic properties are comprehensively analyzed. The results demonstrate a significant reduction in particle size upon carbon coating, effectively mitigating agglomeration. Furthermore, carbon‐coated nanoparticles exhibit substantial enhancement in coercivity, remanence, and saturation magnetization suggesting improved magnetic behavior in comparison to their uncoated counterparts. This enhancement is attributed to the prevention of spin misalignment at the nanoparticle surface by the carbon coating, as well as the formation of distinct magnetic domains due to the reduced particle size. The observed improvements underscore the effectiveness of carbon coating in tailoring the magnetic properties of Fe2O3 nanoparticles for applications in magnetic devices and biomedical systems, such as magnetic hyperthermia and drug delivery systems, where precise control over magnetic behavior is crucial.

Effect of Surface Chemistry and Associated Protein Corona on the Long-Term Biodegradation of Iron Oxide Nanoparticles In Vivo.

Abstract:The protein corona formed on the surface of a nanoparticle in a biological medium determines its behavior in vivo. Herein, iron oxide nanoparticles containing the same core and shell, but bearing two different surface coatings, either glucose or poly(ethylene glycol), were evaluated. The nanoparticles' protein adsorption, in vitro degradation, and in vivo biodistribution and biotransformation over four months were investigated. Although both types of nanoparticles bound similar amounts of proteins in vitro, the differences in the protein corona composition correlated to the nanoparticles biodistribution in vivo. Interestingly, in vitro degradation studies demonstrated faster degradation for nanoparticles functionalized with glucose, whereas the in vivo results were opposite with accelerated biodegradation and clearance of the nanoparticles functionalized with poly(ethylene glycol). Therefore, the variation in the degradation rate observed in vivo could be related not only to the molecules attached to the surface, but also with the associated protein corona, as the key role of the adsorbed proteins on the magnetic core degradation has been demonstrated in vitro.

Abstract:Synthesis and characterization of iron oxide nanoparticles coated with a large molar weight dextran for environmental applications are reported. The first experiments involved the synthesis of iron oxide nanoparticles which were coated with dextran at different concentrations. The synthesis was performed by a co-precipitation technique, while the coating of iron oxide nanoparticles was carried out in solution. The obtained nanoparticles were characterized by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction spectrometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry. The results demonstrated a successful coating of iron oxide nanoparticles with large molar weight dextran, of which agglomeration tendency depended on the amount of dextran in the coating solution. SEM and TEM observations have shown that the iron oxide nanoparticles are of about 7 nm in size.

Preventing corona effects: multi-phosphonic acid poly(ethylene glycol) copolymers for stable stealth iron oxide nanoparticles

Abstract:When disperse in biological fluids, engineered nanoparticles are selectively coated with proteins, resulting in the formation of a protein corona. It is suggested that the protein corona is critical in regulating the conditions of entry into the cytoplasm of living cells. Recent reports describe this phenomenon as ubiquitous and independent of the nature of the particle. For nanomedicine applications however, there is a need to design advanced and cost-effective coatings that are resistant to protein adsorption and that increase the biodistribution in vivo. In this study, phosphonic acid poly(ethylene glycol) copolymers were synthesized and used to coat iron oxide particles. The copolymer composition was optimized to provide simple and scalable protocols as well as long-term stability in culture media. It is shown that polymers with multiple phosphonic acid functionalities and PEG chains outperform other types of coating, including ligands, polyelectrolytes and carboxylic acid functionalized PEG. PEGylated particles exhibit moreover exceptional low cellular uptake, of the order of 100 femtograms of iron per cell. The present approach demonstrates that the surface chemistry of engineered particles is a key parameter in the interactions with cells. It also opens up new avenues for the efficient functionalization of inorganic surfaces.

Abstract:Abstract In the present work, pristine and cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB)-coated ferric oxide nanoparticles ((hbox {CTAB@Fe}_{2}hbox {O}_{3} hbox { NPs})) were synthesized and studied as enzyme mimics. The w/w ratio of (hbox {Fe}_{2}hbox {O}_{3}) to CTAB was varied as 1:1 and 1:2. Transmission electron microscopic analysis revealed that pristine NPs had an average size of 50 nm, whereas the presence of CTAB resulted in the formation of nanorods with length of 130 nm. BET studies confirmed enhancement of surface area on CTAB coating, which was maximum for w/w ratio 1:1. The synthesized pristine NPs and CTAB-coated NPs were evaluated for their peroxidase mimic activity using o-dianisidine dihydrochloride as substrate. Optimum pH, temperature, substrate and NPs concentration for the reaction were 1, (25^{circ }{mathrm{C}}) , (0.16~hbox {mg}~hbox {ml}^{-1}) and (1~hbox {mg}~hbox {ml}^{-1}) , respectively. Peroxidase mimic activity of (hbox {CTAB@Fe}_{2}hbox {O}_{3}hbox { NPs}) (w/w 1:1) was higher than that of pristine NPs. However, further increase in CTAB coating (w/w 1:2) resulted in lowering of peroxidase mimic activity. Kinetic analysis was carried out at optimized conditions; maximum velocity ( (V_{mathrm{max}})) and Michaelis constant ( (K_{mathrm{m}})) value of (hbox {CTAB@Fe}_{2}hbox {O}_{3}hbox { NPs}) at 1:1 w/w ratio were 7.69 mM and (1.12~upmu hbox {mol}~hbox {s}^{-1}) , respectively.

Abstract:Iron oxide nanoparticles (NPs) have recently attracted wider attention because of their unique properties, such as superparamagnetism, larger surface area, surface-to-volume ratio, and simple manufacturing process. Several chemical, physical, and biological techniques have been employed to synthesize NPs with admissible surface chemistry. This paper summarises the approaches for producing iron oxide NPs, shape, and size management, and inviting properties in bioengineering, pharmaceutical, and modern applications. Iron oxides have significant potential in biology, climate change, and horticulture, among other fields. Surface coatings with organic or inorganic particles are one of a kind. The surface coatings of the IONPs are critical to their performance because they prevent nanoparticle aggregation, reduce the risk of immunogenicity, and limit nonspecific cellular uptake. Chitosan is a biodegradable polymer that is applied to iron oxide nanoparticles to coat them. Chitosan subordinates like O-HTCC (an ammonium-quaternary CS subsidiary) have a long-lasting positive charge that allows them to work in different pH ranges allowing their interactions with cell layers at physiological pH. By reacting epoxy propyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (ETA) with chitosan (CS), the hydro-solvent N-(2-hydroxyl) propyl-3-trimethyl ammonium chitosan chloride (HTCC) is formed. For hyperthermic treatment of patients, NPs can also be coordinated to an organ, tissue, or tumor via an external attractive field. Given the increasing interest in iron NPs, the purpose of this review is to present data from iron oxide nanoparticles specially chitosan-capped iron NPs for different biomedical fields.

Synthesis and Characterization of Citric Acid-Modified Iron Oxide Nanoparticles Prepared with Electrohydraulic Discharge Treatment

Abstract:Chemical co-precipitation from ferrous and ferric salts at a 1:1.9 stoichiometric ratio in NH4OH base with ultrasonication (sonolysis) in a low vacuum environment has been used for obtaining colloidal suspensions of Fe3O4 nanoparticles coated with citric acid. Before coating, the nanoparticles were processed by electrohydraulic discharges with a high discharge current (several tens of amperes) in a water medium using a pulsed direct current. Magnetite nanoparticles were obtained with an average crystallite diameter D = 25–28 nm as obtained by XRD and particle sizes of 25 nm as measured by small-angle X-ray scattering. Magnetometry showed that all samples were superparamagnetic. The saturation magnetization for the citric acid covered samples after electrohydraulic processing showed higher value (58 emu/g) than for the directly coated samples (50 emu/g). Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed the presence and binding of citric acid to the magnetite surface by chemisorption of carboxylate ions. Hydrodynamic sizes obtained from DLS and zeta potentials were 93 and 115 nm, −26 and −32 mV for the citric acid covered nanoparticles and 226 nm and 21 mV for the bare nanoparticles, respectively. The hydraulic discharge treatment resulted in a higher citric acid coverage and better particle dispersion. The developed method can be used in nanoparticle synthesis for biomedical applications.

Abstract:Functionalized iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) are of great interest due to wide range applications, especially in nanomedicine. However, they face challenges preventing their further applications such as rapid agglomeration, oxidation, etc. Appropriate surface modification of IONPs can conquer these barriers with improved physicochemical properties. This review summarizes recent advances in the surface modification of IONPs with small organic molecules, polymers and inorganic materials. The preparation methods, mechanisms and applications of surface-modified IONPs with different materials are discussed. Finally, the technical barriers of IONPs and their limitations in practical applications are pointed out, and the development trends and prospects are discussed.

The effect of chelating agents on the cathodic polarization and the electrodeposition of iron powders

Abstract:The electrodeposition of iron powders from different baths containing the same major chemical constitutents was studied. The baths were mainly based on aqueous dilute solutions of ferrous sulphate and additives such as oxalic and citric ions. The effect of these additives on the cathodic polarization curves, current efficiency and powder morphology of the electrodeposited iron powders was investigated. It was found that electrodeposition systems with chelating agents were more polarized than a non-chelated system and produced finer powders with no dendrites.

Abstract:In this feature article, we provide an overview of our research on statistical copolymers as a coating material for metal oxide nanoparticles and surfaces. These copolymers contain functional groups enabling noncovalent binding to oxide surfaces and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) polymers for colloidal stability and stealthiness. The functional groups are organic derivatives of phosphorous acid compounds R-H2PO3, also known as phosphonic acids that have been screened for their strong affinity to metals and for their multidentate binding ability. Herein we develop a polymer-based coating platform that shares features with the self-assembled monolayer (SAM) and layer-by-layer (L-b-L) deposition techniques. The milestones of this endeavor are the synthesis of PEG-based copolymers containing multiple phosphonic acid groups, the implementation of simple protocols combining versatility with high particle production yields, and the experimental evidence of the colloidal stability of the coated particles. As a demonstration, coating studies are conducted on cerium (CeO2), iron (γ-Fe2O3), aluminum (Al2O3), and titanium (TiO2) oxides of different sizes and morphologies. We finally discuss applications in the domain of nanomaterials and nanomedicine. We evaluate the beneficial effects of coatings on redispersible nanopowders, contrast agents for in vitro/vivo assays, and stimuli-responsive particles.

Abstract:This study addressed different materials to coat iron oxide, after using co-precipitation to synthesize. During synthesizing iron oxide, FeSO4•7H2O as a single raw material , was emphasized as a precursor salt. In advance, FeSO4•7H2O was oxidized into trivalence by using hydrogen peroxide, allocated Fe(Ⅱ)and Fe(Ⅲ) mole ratio as one to two, and synthesized ferric ferrous oxide nanoparticle by sodium hydroxide co-precipitation, which TX-100 was a protective agent to disperse uniformly. Depend on the morphology of several nanopartical types through the processing, separation of precursor salt solution and NaOH solution in pump by adding TX-100 solution would get Fe3O4 ratio more evenly. Besides during the experiment, variety loading of NaOH and dispersant, using two- stage method to add NaOH as well, rod and particle mixure would obtain. XRD, SQUID, HRTEM and SEM were used to analyze the particle size, uniformity, Magnetic, and Crystal structure. Also, intend to find the relation among synthesis and properties, and continue to work on electrodes for battery application to seek the optimal performance corresponded to synthesis conditions. Preparation of Fe3O4@Ag was took AgNO3 and C6H12O6, the reductant, into Fe3O4 solution. Different mole ratio of AgNO3 and Fe3O4 were mix- coated. Through the process, surface modifier makes coating completely and uniformly. Later, same analysis entailed to Fe3O4@Ag product powder. The purpose was to examine its completely coating, thickness, and magnetism.
