Abstract:Peano-HASEL (hydraulic amplified self-healing electrostatic) actuators represent a recent advancement in the field of muscle-like soft actuators. They typically consist of flexible electrodes, a flexible and inextensible shell, and liquid dielectric. However, Peano-HASEL actuators employing flexible electrodes can only utilize the electrostatic force generated by a limited area of electrodes to maintain compression of the liquid, resulting in a restricted strain and force outputs. In this Letter, we show that a Peano-HASEL actuator employing rigid electrodes exhibits a significantly enhanced strain and force output. Compared to the conventional flexible-electrode Peano-HASEL actuator, the actuator with rigid electrodes demonstrates a remarkable improvement, with a more than 200% increase in strain output and a more than 140% increase in force output. Notably, we successfully showcase the capability of a Peano-HASEL actuator with rigid electrodes to reliably lift a 50 g load at an 8 kV voltage, a task that the counterpart with flexible electrodes of the same electrode length, width, and oil volume fails to accomplish. This highlights the great potential of rigid-electrode Peano-HASEL actuators for applications such as robotic manipulation.
Pump Up the Jam: Granular Media as a Quasi‐Hydraulic Fluid for Independent Control Over Isometric and Isotonic Actuation

Abstract:Elastomer-granule composites have been used to switch between soft and stiff states by applying negative pressure differentials that cause the membrane to squeeze the internal grains, inducing dilation and jamming. Applications of this phenomenon have ranged from universal gripping to adaptive mobility. Previously, the combination of this jamming phenomenon with the ability to transport grains across multiple soft actuators for shape morphing has not yet been demonstrated. In this paper, the authors demonstrate the use of hollow glass spheres as granular media that functions as a jammable "quasi-hydraulic" fluid in a fluidic elastomeric actuator that better mimics a key featur of animal musculature: independent control over i) isotonic actuation for motion; and ii) isometric actuation for stiffening without shape change. To best implement the quasi-hydraulic fluid, the authors design and build a fluidic device. Leveraging this combination of physical properties creates a new option for fluidic actuation that allows higher specific stiffness actuators using lower volumetric flow rates in addition to independent control over shape and stiffness. These features are showcased in a robotic catcher's mitt by stiffening the fluid in the glove's open configuration for catching, unjamming the media, then pumping additional fluid to the mitt to inflate and grasp.

Abstract:Natural muscle provides excellent motilities for animals. As the basic unit of the muscle system, the skeletal muscle fibers function as a soft linear actuator. Inspired by the muscle fibers, researchers have developed various soft active devices with linear actuation. This paper reviews several soft linear actuators, such as the dielectric elastomer, thermal responsive hydrogels, pneumatic artificial muscle, and conducting polymers. The actuation mechanisms and performances of these soft linear actuators are summarized. Based on the dielectric elastomer, we propose a design of a hybrid system with linear actuation, driven by both the electric motor and dielectric elastomer cone. The electromechanical behaviors of the dielectric elastomer cone have been investigated in both experiment and finite element analysis. This work may guide the further design of soft actuators and robots.

Abstract:Mckibben pneumatic muscle actuators (PMA) have many advantages such as high power-mass ratio and low price, but their strong nonlinear characteristics makes modeling and controlling very hard, which limits their applications. This paper presents the modeling of PMA and methods to enhance their dynamic performances. Considering the incorporated models of fast-switching valves and PMAs, the entire system model is modified in some aspects and the dominant model parameters are determined through experimental results to estimate the dynamic characteristics precisely. Simulation and proper experiments reveal that the dynamic performance of PMA can be improved through filling the PMA with materials of high thermal conductivity. The slow time-varying disturbance caused by the temperature variation of inner gas can be reduced much, which lowers the difficulty of controlling.

Abstract:Electrohydraulic actuators are widely used in industrial applications due to high efficiency and easy of control. This paper proposes the concept of electrohydraulic soft actuator (EHSA) system for robotic grippers. The system consists of one or multiple bending soft actuators, a piston hydraulic pump, and an electrical motor with ball screw mechanism. Each soft actuator has two hydraulic chambers which enable bidirectional bending deformation. The two ports of the hydraulic pump are connected to the two chambers of the soft actuators so as to form closed circuits. The characteristics of the fluidic soft actuators are modeled and identified at two different load conditions, one of which is that the actuators are operated in free space, and the other is that the actuators touch objects. The effectiveness of the model is verified by experimental results with the assumption that the bending angle of the fluidic soft actuators is relatively small. Based on the model, an estimator is designed to obtain the contact force between the actuators and the objects. Finally, closed-loop force control for the actuators is realized by taking the estimate as feedback information. It is shown that the force control has good dynamical response and acceptable steady error.
Low Voltage Electrohydraulic Actuators for Untethered Robotics

Abstract:Rigid robots can be precise in repetitive tasks, but struggle in unstructured environments. Nature's versatility in such environments inspires researchers to develop biomimetic robots that incorporate compliant and contracting artificial muscles. Among the recently proposed artificial muscle technologies, electrohydraulic actuators are promising since they offer performance comparable to that of mammalian muscles in terms of speed and power density. However, they require high driving voltages and have safety concerns due to exposed electrodes. These high voltages lead to either bulky or inefficient driving electronics that make untethered, high-degree-of-freedom bio-inspired robots difficult to realize. Here, we present hydraulically amplified low voltage electrostatic (HALVE) actuators that match mammalian skeletal muscles in average power density (50.5 W kg-1) and peak strain rate (971 % s-1) at a driving voltage of just 1100 V. This driving voltage is approx. 5-7 times lower compared to other electrohydraulic actuators using paraelectric dielectrics. Furthermore, HALVE actuators are safe to touch, waterproof, and self-clearing, which makes them easy to implement in wearables and robotics. We characterize, model, and physically validate key performance metrics of the actuator and compare its performance to state-of-the-art electrohydraulic designs. Finally, we demonstrate the utility of our actuators on two muscle-based electrohydraulic robots: an untethered soft robotic swimmer and a robotic gripper. We foresee that HALVE actuators can become a key building block for future highly-biomimetic untethered robots and wearables with many independent artificial muscles such as biomimetic hands, faces, or exoskeletons.

Abstract:<p>Future robots and intelligent systems will autonomously navigate in unstructured environments and closely collaborate with humans; integrated with our bodies and minds, they will allow us to surpass our physical limitations. Traditional robots are mostly built from rigid, metallic components and electromagnetic motors, which make them heavy, expensive, unsafe near people, and ill‐suited for unpredictable environments. By contrast, biological organisms make extensive use of soft materials and radically outperform robots in terms of dexterity, agility, and adaptability. Particularly, natural muscle—a masterpiece of evolution—has long inspired researchers to create "artificial muscles" in an attempt to replicate its versatility, seamless integration with sensing, and ability to self‐heal. To date, natural muscle remains unmatched in all‐round performance, but rapid advancements in soft robotics have brought viable alternatives closer than ever. Herein, the recent development of hydraulically amplified self‐healing electrostatic (HASEL) actuators, a new class of high‐performance, self‐sensing artificial muscles that couple electrostatic and hydraulic forces to achieve diverse modes of actuation, is discussed; current designs match or exceed natural muscle in many metrics. Research on materials, designs, fabrication, modeling, and control systems for HASEL actuators is detailed. In each area, research opportunities are identified, which together lays out a roadmap for actuators with drastically improved performance. With their unique versatility and wide potential for further improvement, HASEL actuators are poised to play an important role in a paradigm shift that fundamentally challenges the current limitations of robotic hardware toward future intelligent systems that replicate the vast capabilities of biological organisms.</p>

High-Frequency Capacitive Sensing for Electrohydraulic Soft Actuators

Abstract:The need for compliant and proprioceptive actuators has grown more evident in pursuing more adaptable and versatile robotic systems. Hydraulically Amplified Self-Healing Electrostatic (HASEL) actuators offer distinctive advantages with their inherent softness and flexibility, making them promising candidates for various robotic tasks, including delicate interactions with humans and animals, biomimetic locomotion, prosthetics, and exoskeletons. This has resulted in a growing interest in the capacitive self-sensing capabilities of HASEL actuators to create miniature displacement estimation circuitry that does not require external sensors. However, achieving HASEL self-sensing for actuation frequencies above 1 Hz and with miniature high-voltage power supplies has remained limited. In this paper, we introduce the F-HASEL actuator, which adds an additional electrode pair used exclusively for capacitive sensing to a Peano-HASEL actuator. We demonstrate displacement estimation of the F-HASEL during high-frequency actuation up to 20 Hz and during external loading using miniaturized circuitry comprised of low-cost off-the-shelf components and a miniature high-voltage power supply. Finally, we propose a circuitry to estimate the displacement of multiple F-HASELs and demonstrate it in a wearable application to track joint rotations of a virtual reality user in real-time.

Abstract:This report presents research conducted on amplified self-healing electrostatic (HASEL) actuators. HASEL actuators are comprised of a dielectric fluid sealed between two inextensible layers with bonded, flexible electrodes on its outer surface. When charge is applied to the electrodes, Coulomb force compresses the fluid and causes the actuator to contract. In this work a faster, more customizable and convenient way of creating a HASEL actuator is presented, using a laser engraver to heat-seal and cut polypropylene sheets. Using this technique, a hydraulically actuated soft lens is fabricated and demonstrated.

Last, we demonstrate the utility of HALVE actuators on a robotic gripper and a soft robotic swimmer.

Acome et al. used a liquid dielectric, rather than an elastomeric polymer, to solve a problem of catastrophic failure in dielectric elastomer actuators. The dielectric's liquid nature allowed it to self-heal—something that would not be possible with a solid dielectric. AC-Driven Series Elastic Electrohydraulic Actuator for Stable and Smooth Displacement Output

Abstract:Soft electrohydraulic actuators known as HASEL actuators have attracted widespread research interest due to their outstanding dynamic performance and high output power. However, the displacement of electrohydraulic actuators usually declines with time under constant DC voltage, which hampers its prospective application. A mathematical model is firstly established to not only explain the decrease in displacement under DC voltage but also predict the relatively stable displacement with oscillation under AC square wave voltage. The mathematical model is validated since the actual displacement confirms the trend observed by our model. To smooth the displacement oscillation introduced by AC voltage, a serial elastic component is incorporated to form a SE-HASEL actuator. A feedback control with a proportion-integration algorithm enables the SE-HASEL actuator to eliminate the obstinate displacement hysteresis. Our results revealed that, through our methodology, the SE-HASEL actuator can give stable and smooth displacement and is capable of absorbing external impact disturbance simultaneously. A rotary joint based on the SE-HASEL actuator is developed to reflect its possibility to generate a common rotary motion for wide robotic applications. More importantly, this paper also proposes a highly accurate needle biopsy robot that can be utilized in MRI-guide surgical procedures. Overall, we have achieved AC-driven series elastic electrohydraulic actuators that can exhibit stable and smooth displacement output.

Abstract:Electroactive polymer (EAP) actuators are an example of a novel soft material device that can be used for several applications including artificial muscles and lenses. The field of EAPs can be broken down into a few fields; however, the field that will be discussed in this study is that of Soft Electrohydraulic (SEH or EH) actuators. The device that will specifically be studied is the Hydraulically Amplified Self-Healing Electrostatic (HASEL) actuator. The design of the HASEL actuator is simple. There are two compliant films that house a dielectric liquid, and with the application of a voltage potential, there is an output displacement and force. However, the actuation mechanism is more complex, thus there is a need to understand theoretically and experimentally how the actuator works. This study analytically describes the electrode closure and the experimental testing of the actuators. Then, dimensional analysis techniques are used to determine what factors are contributing to the function of the actuator. For this study, eight dimensionless Π groups were found based on the derived analytical equation. These Π groups were determined based on the input voltage, density, viscosity, and elastic modulus of the materials; these were chosen because of their major contribution to the experimental data. The Π groups that are of particular importance are related to the characteristic length, which is directly related to the displacement of the fluid, the fluid velocity, the fluid pressure, and the dielectric constant. From this study, relationships between the output force, the electrostatic contributions, and other parameters were determined. All in all, this type of analysis can provide guidance on the development of high-performance HASEL actuators.

Abstract:Humans and animals can achieve agile and efficient movements because the muscle can operate in different modes depending on its intrinsic mechanical properties. For bioinspired robotics and prosthetics, it is highly desirable to have artificial actuators with muscle-like properties. However, it still remains a challenge to realize both intrinsic muscle-like force-velocity and force-length properties in one single actuator simultaneously. This study presents a bioinspired soft actuator, named HimiSK (highly imitating skeletal muscle), designed by spatially arranging a set of synergistically contractile units in a flexible matrix similar to skeletal musculature. We have demonstrated that the actuator presents both intrinsic force-velocity and force-length characteristics that are very close to biological muscle with inherent self-stability and robustness in response to external perturbations. These outstanding properties result from the bioinspired architecture and the adaptive morphing of the flexible matrix material, which adapts automatically to mechanically diverse tasks without reliance on sensors and controllers.

Abstract:It seems that the pneumatic artificial muscles (PAMs) have a very great potential in industrial applications for the actuation of new types of robots and manipulators. Their properties such as compactness, high strength, high power-to-weight ratio, inherent safety and simplicity are worthy features in advanced robotics. In this paper we describe the design, construction and experimental testing of a single-joint manipulator arm actuated by pneumatic muscle actuators. An antagonistic muscle pair is used in a linear translational sense to produce a force or in a rotational sense to produce a required torque on the pulley. The concept, operating principle and elementary properties of pneumatic muscle actuators are explained. A nonlinear mathematical model of the manipulator arm driven by pneumatic artificial muscles and controlled with proportional control valve is derived, which is used in a numerical simulation program. The experiments were carried out on practically realized manipulator actuated by pair of muscle actuators set into antagonism configuration.
Stretchable Electrohydraulic Artificial Muscle for Full Motion Ranges in Musculoskeletal Antagonistic Joints

Abstract:Artificial muscles play a crucial role in musculoskeletal robotics and prosthetics to approximate the force-generating functionality of biological muscle. However, current artificial muscle systems are typically limited to either contraction or extension, not both. This limitation hinders the development of fully functional artificial musculoskeletal systems. We address this challenge by introducing an artificial antagonistic muscle system capable of both contraction and extension. Our design integrates non-stretchable electrohydraulic soft actuators (HASELs) with electrostatic clutches within an antagonistic musculoskeletal framework. This configuration enables an antagonistic joint to achieve a full range of motion without displacement loss due to tendon slack. We implement a synchronization method to coordinate muscle and clutch units, ensuring smooth motion profiles and speeds. This approach facilitates seamless transitions between antagonistic muscles at operational frequencies of up to 3.2 Hz. While our prototype utilizes electrohydraulic actuators, this muscle-clutch concept is adaptable to other non-stretchable artificial muscles, such as McKibben actuators, expanding their capability for extension and full range of motion in antagonistic setups. Our design represents a significant advancement in the development of fundamental components for more functional and efficient artificial musculoskeletal systems, bringing their capabilities closer to those of their biological counterparts.

Abstract:The practical long-term application of power-assisted exoskeleton robots requires lightweight, high-efficient, and high-control precision actuators. Based on the improvement of hardware design and control method, this article proposes a complete drive solution for the joint drive of exoskeleton robots and promotes the research of robot joint drive based on the pump-controlled hydraulic system. Specifically, a compact, backdrivable, and energy-efficient drive unit, lightweight electrohydrostatic actuator (LEHA) with a weight of 2.5 kg and a rated power of 340 W is designed first. Then, by combining the fifth-order high-precision dynamics model of LEHA and virtual decomposition control method, a high-performance controller with $L_{2}$ and $L_{\infty }$ stability is developed to realize the precise position trajectory tracking control of LEHA. Experimental results based on actual exoskeleton robot knee joints show that the proposed solution has high trajectory tracking performance over the frequency range of human body swing phase motion (0.5–1.5 Hz) and different loads (0–20 kg). Moreover, compared with the valve-controlled hydraulic power system with the same exoskeleton robot knee joint and wearer, test results show that the average efficiency increased by 18.13% after using LEHA under the swing phase test.
Compliant actuators that mimic biological muscle performance with applications in a highly biomimetic robotic arm

Abstract:This paper endeavours to bridge the existing gap in muscular actuator design for ligament-skeletal-inspired robots, thereby fostering the evolution of these robotic systems. We introduce two novel compliant actuators, namely the Internal Torsion Spring Compliant Actuator (ICA) and the External Spring Compliant Actuator (ECA), and present a comparative analysis against the previously conceived Magnet Integrated Soft Actuator (MISA) through computational and experimental results. These actuators, employing a motor-tendon system, emulate biological muscle-like forms, enhancing artificial muscle technology. A robotic arm application inspired by the skeletal ligament system is presented. Experiments demonstrate satisfactory power in tasks like lifting dumbbells (peak power: 36W), playing table tennis (end-effector speed: 3.2 m/s), and door opening, without compromising biomimetic aesthetics. Compared to other linear stiffness serial elastic actuators (SEAs), ECA and ICA exhibit high power-to-volume (361 x 10^3 W/m) and power-to-mass (111.6 W/kg) ratios respectively, endorsing the biomimetic design's promise in robotic development.

Abstract:The hydraulic exoskeleton is one research hotspot in the field of robotics, which can take heavy load due to the high power density of the hydraulic system. However, the traditional hydraulic system is normally centralized, inefficient, and bulky during application, which limits its development in the exoskeleton. For improving the robot's performance, its hydraulic actuating system should be optimized further. In this paper a novel hydraulic actuating system (HAS) based on electric-hydrostatic actuator is proposed, which is applied to hip and knee joints. Each HAS integrates an electric servo motor, a high-speed micro pump, a specific tank, and other components into a module. The specific parameters are obtained through relevant simulation according to human motion data and load requirements. The dynamic models of the HAS are built, and validated by the system identification. Experiments of trajectory tracking and human-exoskeleton interaction are carried out, which demonstrate the proposed HAS has the ability to be applied to the exoskeleton. Compared with the previous prototype, the total weight of the HAS in the robot is reduced by about 40%, and the power density is increased by almost 1.6 times.

Abstract:This paper describes a system identification method and the development of a closed-loop controller for a Hydraulically Amplified Self-healing ELectrostatic (HASEL) actuator. Our efforts focus on developing a reliable and consistent way to identify system models for these soft robotic actuators using high-speed videography based motion tracking. Utilizing a mass-spring-damper model we are able to accurately capture the behavior of a HASEL actuator. We use the resulting plant model to design a Proportional-Integral controller that demonstrates improved closed-loop tracking and steady-state error performance.
