Abstract:In this work, using monodispersed sulfonated polystyrene (SPS) microspheres as carriers, FeCl3·6H2O and FeSO4·7H2O as precursors, NaOH as precipitant in the presence of graphene oxide (GO), SPS/Fe3O4/GO micro-nano composites were fabricated by a simple one-pot method employing an inverse coprecipitation in-situ compound technology. The SPS/Fe3O4/GO micro-nano composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffractometer, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms and vibrating sample magnetometer. The results show that the SPS/Fe3O4/GO micro-nano composites were fabricated with SPS as core, GO and Fe3O4 nanoparticles as shell. The SPS/Fe3O4/GO micro-nano composites had larger BET specific surface area, average pore width and micropore volume than the pure SPS microspheres. Meanwhile, the SPS/Fe3O4/GO micro-nano composites had superparamagnetism and hydrophilic property. The saturation magnetization (Ms) of the SPS/Fe3O4/GO micro-nano composites was 10.86 emu/g, which was enough to ensure the convenient magnetic separation of solid and liquid phase.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to improve the dispersibility and stability of Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles and enhance their application potential in fields such as water treatment and biomedicine. Specifically: 1. **Aggregation problem of Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles**: Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles are prone to aggregate into large particles due to the surface effect, which will reduce their effective specific surface area and thus affect their performance in practical applications. 2. **Oxidation problem of Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles**: Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles are easily oxidized when exposed to air, leading to a decline in the stability of the composite material. 3. **Magnetic separation efficiency problem**: Small - sized Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles are difficult to be separated from aqueous solutions in a low - magnetic field, increasing the application cost. To solve these problems, the author proposes a simple one - pot method for preparing superparamagnetic sulfonated polystyrene/Fe₃O₄/graphene oxide (SPS/Fe₃O₄/GO) micro - nano composite materials. By loading Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles on sulfonated polystyrene (SPS) microspheres with a large specific surface area and strong binding force and introducing graphene oxide (GO) to reduce the oxidation and aggregation of Fe₃O₄, a composite material with a high specific surface area, superparamagnetism and hydrophilicity is prepared. This composite material not only improves the dispersibility and stability of Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles, but also has good magnetic separation performance and is suitable for fields such as enzyme immobilization, cell and protein separation, and wastewater treatment.
