Abstract:Platinum single-site catalysts (SSCs) are a promising technology for the production of hydrogen from clean energy sources. They have high activity and maximal platinum-atom utilisation. However, the bonding environment of platinum during operation is poorly understood. In this work, we use operando, synchrotron-X-ray absorption spectroscopy to study the platinum bonding in SSCs. First, we synthesise an atomically dispersed platinum complex with aniline and chloride ligands onto graphene and characterise it with ex-situ electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy (XANES), and extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (EXAFS). Then, by operando EXAFS and XANES, we show that as a negatively biased potential is applied, the Pt-N bonds break first followed by the Pt-Cl bonds. The platinum is reduced from platinum(II) to metallic platinum(0) by the onset of the hydrogen-evolution reaction at 0 V. Furthermore, we observe an increase in Pt-Pt bonding, indicating the formation of platinum agglomerates. Together, these results indicate that while aniline is used to prepare platinum SSCs, the single-site complexes are decomposed and platinum agglomerates at operating potentials. This work is an important contribution to the understanding of the bonding environment and the evolution of the molecular structure of platinum complexes in SSCs.

Abstract:Developing a facile route to access active and well-defined single atom sites catalysts has been a major area of focus for single atoms catalysts (SACs). Herein, we demonstrate a simple approach to generate atomically dispersed platinum via a thermal emitting method using bulk Pt metal as a precursor, significantly simplifying synthesis routes and minimizing synthesis costs. The ammonia produced by pyrolysis of Dicyandiamide can coordinate with platinum atoms by strong coordination effect. Then, the volatile Pt(NH3) x can be anchored onto the surface of defective graphene. The as-prepared Pt SAs/DG exhibits high activity for the electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction and selective oxidation of various organosilanes. This viable thermal emitting strategy can also be applied to other single metal atoms, for example, gold and palladium. Our findings provide an enabling and versatile platform for facile accessing SACs toward many industrial important reactions.

Abstract:Platinum (Pt)-based heterogeneous catalysts are promising for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER); considerable efforts, however, are devoted to reducing Pt usage by maximizing catalytic efficiency due to its high price and scarcity. Herein, we report Pt single-atom and cluster catalyst anchored on functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes (Pt/f-MWCNTs) by photodeposition. The Pt/f-MWCNTs catalyst with N loading of 0.323 wt% exhibits exceptionally high activity and decent stability for HER in acid condition, whose mass activity is 74.7 times higher than that of state-of-the-art commercial Pt/C catalyst at an overpotential of 50 mV vs. RHE. This work paves a novel way to realize controllable synthesis of Pt-based catalysts with ultrahigh activity and long-term stability for electrocatalytic HER.

Abstract:The coordinated configuration of atomic platinum (Pt) has always been identified as an active site with high intrinsic activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, we purposely synthesize single vacancies in a carbon matrix (defective graphene) that can trap atomic Pt to form the Pt-C3 configuration, which gives exceptionally high reactivity for HER in both acidic and alkaline solutions. The intrinsic activity of Pt-C3 site is valued with a turnover frequency (TOF) of 26.41 s-1 and mass activity of 26.05 A g-1 at 100 mV, respectively, which are both nearly 18 times higher than those of commercial 20 wt % Pt/C. It is revealed that the optimal coordination Pt-C3 has a stronger electron-capture ability and lower Gibbs free energy difference (ΔG), resulting in promoting the reduction of adsorbed H+ and the acceleration of H2 desorption, thus exhibiting the extraordinary HER activity. This work provides a new insight on the unique coordinated configuration of dispersive atomic Pt in defective C matrix for superior HER performance.

Abstract:Herein, we report a convenient and controllable electroplating strategy to fabricate single-atom site catalysts directly from bulk metals with the assistance of graphene oxide membrane (GOM) under mild and ambient conditions. With the regulation of the GOM, the diffusion rate and the concentration of metal ions around the working electrode are efficiently decreased; consequently, the growth of nuclei and aggregation of atoms are successfully prevented. The synthesized Pt-SAs/C not only exhibits an outstanding electrocatalytic activity towards the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), but also an excellent photocatalytic activity for water splitting with CdS as the photosensitizer under visible-light irradiation. This work provides an efficient strategy for developing single-atom site catalysts towards hydrogen production.

Abstract:As one of the dominant configurations, platinum (Pt) single atomic catalysts (SACs) have pushed the performance of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) to an unprecedented level due to the maximized atomic utilization efficiency of Pt atoms. However, the contribution of atomic clusters, which exist in SACs as well, to the overall catalytic performance is always overlooked, thus limiting further enhancement of the performance of Pt-catalyzed HER. Herein, we report anchoring Pt atomic clusters on N-doped graphene for ultrahigh performance of the HER Benefiting from optimized electron transfer and larger binding energy between active centers and the substrate, Pt atomic cluster catalysts (ACCs) exhibit higher catalytic activity than their single atomic counterparts after 4000 cycles and more than 16 h for HER in an acid solution. These findings reveal a vast opportunity to enhance the catalytic performance of chemical reactions with noble-metal-based ACCs in the near future.

Abstract:Platinum-based catalysts have been considered the most effective electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction in water splitting. However, platinum utilization in these electrocatalysts is extremely low, as the active sites are only located on the surface of the catalyst particles. Downsizing catalyst nanoparticles to single atoms is highly desirable to maximize their efficiency by utilizing nearly all platinum atoms. Here we report on a practical synthesis method to produce isolated single platinum atoms and clusters using the atomic layer deposition technique. The single platinum atom catalysts are investigated for the hydrogen evolution reaction, where they exhibit significantly enhanced catalytic activity (up to 37 times) and high stability in comparison with the state-of-the-art commercial platinum/carbon catalysts. The X-ray absorption fine structure and density functional theory analyses indicate that the partially unoccupied density of states of the platinum atoms’ 5d orbitals on the nitrogen-doped graphene are responsible for the excellent performance.

Abstract:The electrochemical hydrogen evolution is a key technology for future renewable energy conversion and storage. Platinum is the most efficient catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), but its mass activity should be boosted further. Herein, we deposited platinum on nitrogen-doped vertical graphene through an atomic layer deposition method. Aberration-corrected annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy confirmed that the platinum was highly dispersed on the array substrate. On account of the array structure and high dispersion of platinum, the synthesized catalyst exhibited high HER performance with a low overpotential of 42 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a low Tafel slope of 52.2 mV dec-1. Significantly, the synthesized catalyst exhibited a high mass activity of 4.45 A mg-1Pt, which was ~13 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C.

Abstract:Pt single-atom catalysts are promising for efficient hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) due to their ultra-high catalytic activity and atomic utilization. However, developing a scalable preparation method of binder-free Pt single-atom catalysts with optimal electronic structures for large-scale hydrogen production is still a serious challenge. In this work, we fabricated tailored nitrogen-doped porous carbon nanofibers as a support for engineering the electronic structure of Pt single-atom sites via initial micropore trapping and subsequent optimized nitrogen/carbon anchoring. The as-prepared Pt single-atom catalysts exhibited impressively enhanced HER activity and satisfactory stability, superior to the state-of-the-art single-atom catalysts. X-ray absorption structure analysis combined with theoretical simulation demonstrated the mechanisms for HER performance improvement. In particular, the free-standing Pt single-atom catalysts for a binder-free electrode showed a low overpotential of 64 mV even at 500 mA cm -2 , indicating promising application for the large-scale hydrogen production.

Abstract:Platinum (Pt) is the state-of-the-art electrochemical catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), but its commercial developments are restricted by scarcity and high cost. In this paper, defective porous carbon is obtained by removing the doped nitrogen atoms at high temperatures and ultrafine Pt nanoparticles were embedded in the defective porous carbon (Pt NPs/DPC) via a facile hydrothermal method. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of ultrafine Pt NPs and conductive substrate, Pt NPs/DPC catalyst exhibits high electrochemical activity with a low overpotential of 30 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and Tafel slope of 31 mV dec −1 and remarkable long-term electrochemical stability in acid solution, demonstrating HER performance superior to commercial 40 % Pt/C.

Abstract:Currently, platinum (Pt)/carbon support composite materials have tremendous application prospects in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, one of the primary challenges for boosting their performance is designing a substrate with the desired microstructure. Herein, the intact hollow carbon spheres (HCSs) were prepared via template method. Based on the morphology variation of the as-prepared HCSs-x, we conjectured that the polydopamine (PDA) core was generated first and then slowly grew into a complete overburden (SiO2@PDA). Afterward, Pt atomic clusters were anchored on the outer shells of HCSs-4 to construct composite electrocatalysts (Pty/HCSs-4) by a chemical reduction method. Due to the low charge-transfer resistance, the HCSs have a large electrochemical surface area and provide a continuous electron transport pathway, boosting the atom utilization efficiency during hydrogen production and release. The synthesized Pt2.5/HCSs-4 electrocatalysts exhibit excellent HER activity in acidic media, which can be ascribed to the compositional modulation and delicate structural design. Specifically, when the overpotential is 10 A g-1, the overpotential can achieve 92 mV. This work opens a new route to fabricate Pt-based electrocatalysts and brings a new understanding of the formation mechanism of HCSs.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts offer a pathway to cost-efficient catalysis using the minimal amount of precious metals. However, preparing and keeping them stable during operation remains a challenge. Here we report the synthesis of double transition metal MXene nanosheets—Mo2TiC2Tx, with abundant exposed basal planes and Mo vacancies in the outer layers—by electrochemical exfoliation, enabled by the interaction between protons and the surface functional groups of Mo2TiC2Tx. The as-formed Mo vacancies are used to immobilize single Pt atoms, enhancing the MXene’s catalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction. The developed catalyst exhibits a high catalytic ability with low overpotentials of 30 and 77 mV to achieve 10 and 100 mA cm−2 and a mass activity about 40 times greater than the commercial platinum-on-carbon catalyst. The strong covalent interactions between positively charged Pt single atoms and the MXene contribute to the exceptional catalytic performance and stability.

Abstract:Dispersing catalytically active metals as single atoms on supports represents the ultimate in metal utilization efficiency and is increasingly being used as a strategy to design hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts. Although platinum (Pt) is highly active for HER, given its high cost it is desirable to find ways to improve performance further while minimizing the Pt loading. Here, we use onion-like nanospheres of carbon (OLC) to anchor stable atomically dispersed Pt to act as a catalyst (Pt1/OLC) for the HER. In acidic media, the performance of the Pt1/OLC catalyst (0.27 wt% Pt) in terms of a low overpotential (38 mV at 10 mA cm−2) and high turnover frequencies (40.78 H2 s−1 at 100 mV) is better than that of a graphene-supported single-atom catalyst with a similar Pt loading, and comparable to a commercial Pt/C catalyst with 20 wt% Pt. First-principle calculations suggest that a tip-enhanced local electric field at the Pt site on the curved support promotes the reaction kinetics for hydrogen evolution.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts offering intriguing activity and selectivity are subject of intense investigation. Understanding the nature of single-atom active site and its dynamics under working state are crucial to improving their catalytic performances. Here, we identify at atomic level a general evolution of single atom into a near-free state under electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution condition, via operando synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy. We uncover that the single Pt atom tends to dynamically release from the nitrogen-carbon substrate, with the geometric structure less coordinated to support and electronic property closer to zero valence, during the reaction. Theoretical simulations support that the Pt sites with weakened Pt–support interaction and more 5 d density are the real active centers. The single-atom Pt catalyst exhibits very high hydrogen evolution activity with only 19 mV overpotential in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 and 46 mV in 1.0 M NaOH at 10 mA cm −2 , and long-term durability in wide-pH electrolytes.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and their derivatives have been widely applied as electrocatalysts owing to their unique nanoscale pore configurations, stable periodic structures, abundant coordination sites and high surface area. This work aims to construct a non-thermodynamically stable Pt-N2 coordination active site by electrochemically modifying platinum (Pt) single atoms into a fully conjugated 2D COF as conductive agent-free and pyrolysis-free electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In addition to maximizing atomic utilization, single-atom catalysts with definite structures can be used to investigate catalytic mechanisms and structure-activity relationships. In this work, in-situ characterizations and theoretical calculations reveal that a nitrogen-rich graphene analogue COF not only exhibits a favorable metal-support effect for Pt, adjusting the binding energy between Pt sites to H* intermediates by forming unique Pt-N2 instead of the typical Pt-N4 coordination environment, but also enhances electron transport ability and structural stability, showing both conductivity and stability in acidic environments.

Abstract:Modulating Pt surfaces through the introduction of lattice distortion emerges as immensely effective strategy that enhances the kinetics of alkaline hydrogen evolution and oxidation processes. In this study, we fabricated lattice-distorted Pt wrinkled nanoparticles (LD-Pt WNPs) for efficient hydrogen electrocatalysis. The LD-Pt WNPs not only outperform the Pt/C benchmark in hydrogen oxidation reaction, achieving an excellent mass-specific current of 968.5 mA·mg Pt −1 (9 times that of Pt/C), but also demonstrate outstanding hydrogen evolution reaction activity with a small overpotential of 58.0 mV. Comprehensive experiments and density functional theory calculations reveal that lattice defects introduce an abundance of unsaturated coordination atoms while modifying the d-band center of Pt. This dual effect optimizes the binding strength of crucial H and OH intermediates, leading to a significant reduction in the energy barrier of the reaction bottleneck, commonly known as the Volmer step. This work unveils a fresh viewpoint on projecting and developing high efficiency electrocatalysts through defect engineering.

Crystalline Lattice‐Confined Atomic Pt in Metal Carbides to Match Electronic Structures and Hydrogen Evolution Behaviors of Platinum

Abstract:Platinum‐based catalysts occupy a pivotal position in diverse catalytic applications in hydrogen chemistry and electrochemistry, for instance, the hydrogen evolution reactions (HER). While adsorbed Pt atoms on supports often cause severe mismatching on electronic structures and HER behaviors from metallic Pt due to the different energy level distribution of electron orbitals. Here, we report the design of crystalline lattice‐confined atomic Pt in metal carbides using the Pt‐centered polyoxometalate frameworks with strong Pt‐O‐metal covalent bonds. Remarkably, the lattice‐confined atomic Pt in the tungsten carbides (Ptdoped@WCx, both Pt and W have atomic radii of 1.3 Å) exhibit near‐zero valence states and similar electronic structures as metallic Pt, thus delivering matched energy level distributions of the Pt 5dz2 and H 1s orbitals and similar acidic hydrogen evolution behaviors. In alkaline conditions, the Ptdoped@WCx exhibits 40 times greater mass activity (49.5 A mgPt−1 at ƞ = 150 mV) than the Pt@C because of the favorable water dissociation and H* transport.
