Abstract:Platinum (Pt)-based heterogeneous catalysts are promising for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER); considerable efforts, however, are devoted to reducing Pt usage by maximizing catalytic efficiency due to its high price and scarcity. Herein, we report Pt single-atom and cluster catalyst anchored on functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes (Pt/f-MWCNTs) by photodeposition. The Pt/f-MWCNTs catalyst with N loading of 0.323 wt% exhibits exceptionally high activity and decent stability for HER in acid condition, whose mass activity is 74.7 times higher than that of state-of-the-art commercial Pt/C catalyst at an overpotential of 50 mV vs. RHE. This work paves a novel way to realize controllable synthesis of Pt-based catalysts with ultrahigh activity and long-term stability for electrocatalytic HER.

Abstract:As one of the dominant configurations, platinum (Pt) single atomic catalysts (SACs) have pushed the performance of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) to an unprecedented level due to the maximized atomic utilization efficiency of Pt atoms. However, the contribution of atomic clusters, which exist in SACs as well, to the overall catalytic performance is always overlooked, thus limiting further enhancement of the performance of Pt-catalyzed HER. Herein, we report anchoring Pt atomic clusters on N-doped graphene for ultrahigh performance of the HER Benefiting from optimized electron transfer and larger binding energy between active centers and the substrate, Pt atomic cluster catalysts (ACCs) exhibit higher catalytic activity than their single atomic counterparts after 4000 cycles and more than 16 h for HER in an acid solution. These findings reveal a vast opportunity to enhance the catalytic performance of chemical reactions with noble-metal-based ACCs in the near future.

Abstract:Designing highly active and robust platinum-free electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction is vital for large-scale and efficient production of hydrogen through electrochemical water splitting. Here, we report nonprecious intermetallic Cu5Zr clusters that are in situ anchored on hierarchical nanoporous copper (NP Cu/Cu5Zr) for efficient hydrogen evolution in alkaline medium. By virtue of hydroxygenated zirconium atoms activating their nearby Cu-Cu bridge sites with appropriate hydrogenbinding energy, the Cu5Zr clusters have a high electrocatalytic activity toward the hydrogen evolution reaction. Associated with unique architecture featured with steady and bicontinuous nanoporous copper skeleton that facilitates electron transfer and electrolyte accessibility, the self-supported monolithic NP Cu/Cu5Zr electrodes boost violent hydrogen gas release, realizing ultrahigh current density of 500 mA cm(-2) at a low potential of -280 mV versus reversible hydrogen electrode, with exceptional stability in 1 M KOH solution. The electrochemical properties outperform those of state-of-the-art nonprecious metal electrocatalysts and make them promising candidates as electrodes in water splitting devices.

Abstract:Platinum-based catalysts are regarded as the Holy Grail of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). As a benchmark catalyst for HER, the commercial Pt/C catalyst has low Pt utilization efficiency and high cost, which hinders its commercialization. Atomic clusters-based catalysts show high efficiency of atom utilization and high performance toward electrocatalysis. Herein, an environmentally friendly preparation strategy is proposed to construct Pt atomic clusters on the polyoxometalates-carbon black (Pt-POMs-CB) support. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the Pt clusters can be stably anchored on the surface with the driving force arising from the charge transfer from Pt atoms to O atoms of the POMs. Benefiting from metal-support interaction, Pt atomic clusters embedded in silicotungstic acid-carbon black (Pt-STA-CB) exhibit excellent HER activity with an overpotential of 33.8 mV at 10 mA cm−2, and high mass activity is 1.62 A mg–1Pt at 33.8 mV, which is 5.4 times that of the commercial Pt/C. In addition, the catalyst displays high stability of 800 h at current density of 500 mA cm−2. It provides a platform for facile and low-cost preparation of stable Pt-based catalysts, which is crucial for their large-scale production and practical application in the industry.

Abstract:Platinum (Pt) catalyst is the core of current industrial catalysts and the holy grail for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Previous studies have revealed that the HER activity of oxidized Pt is better than that of metal Pt 0 . Yet the relationship between the Pt–O structure and the catalytic activity has not been well explained to date. Herein, we report a new metastable platinum oxide, which achieved a low overpotential of 12 mV at a current density of −10 mA per square centimetre in acidic HER. DFT calculations showed that the [Pt–O] active site could be easily attacked by protons to form the Pt–H intermediate state during the HER and the adsorbed H could easily combine with any H atoms on adjacent O to form H 2 .

Abstract:Oxygen vacancy-rich titania is a promising support for enhancing the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). This work innovatively loaded Pt nanoparticles on oxygen vacancy-rich TiO2 (Pt/Vo-TiO2) in situ by using a photocatalytic device. The synthesis conditions are mild, do not require high temperatures and strong reducing agents, and can avoid the accumulation of platinum species. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray absorption spectrometry (XAS) verified the synergistic effect of Pt species and oxygen vacancies on the progress of the reaction kinetics, where the Pt particles exposed by the in situ synthesis functioned as reaction sites in the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Based on this, Pt/Vo-TiO2 exhibits excellent electrocatalytic performance with an overpotential of only 56 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 and a Tafel slope of only 73.5 mV dec-1. This work provides a new strategy for designing highly efficient HER catalysts.

Abstract:Currently, platinum (Pt)/carbon support composite materials have tremendous application prospects in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, one of the primary challenges for boosting their performance is designing a substrate with the desired microstructure. Herein, the intact hollow carbon spheres (HCSs) were prepared via template method. Based on the morphology variation of the as-prepared HCSs-x, we conjectured that the polydopamine (PDA) core was generated first and then slowly grew into a complete overburden (SiO2@PDA). Afterward, Pt atomic clusters were anchored on the outer shells of HCSs-4 to construct composite electrocatalysts (Pty/HCSs-4) by a chemical reduction method. Due to the low charge-transfer resistance, the HCSs have a large electrochemical surface area and provide a continuous electron transport pathway, boosting the atom utilization efficiency during hydrogen production and release. The synthesized Pt2.5/HCSs-4 electrocatalysts exhibit excellent HER activity in acidic media, which can be ascribed to the compositional modulation and delicate structural design. Specifically, when the overpotential is 10 A g-1, the overpotential can achieve 92 mV. This work opens a new route to fabricate Pt-based electrocatalysts and brings a new understanding of the formation mechanism of HCSs.

Abstract:Heterogeneous catalysts with atomic dispersion play an important role in electrocatalysis. In addition to the single-atom, modifying the intrinsic catalytic capacity of single-atom catalysts through cooperative atom-clusters is an effective way to increase active sites and improve mass activity. Herein, a composite electrocatalytic material (Pt M @CN) with partial Pt single-atoms and partial Pt atom-clusters was obtained by pyrolysis of the thermostable UiO-66-PtTCPP precursor. Remarkably, beneficial to the synergistic effect of Pt single-atom and Pt atom-clusters as well as the strong metal-support interaction, the Pt M @CN catalyst showed excellent hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity and stability in both acidic and alkaline electrolytes. Moreover, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations shows that the existence of Pt single-atom and Pt atom-clusters could rationally adjust electronic structure of supported metals and impact adsorption energy of reaction intermediates, which play an essential role in enhancing the electrocatalytic activity of HER.

Abstract:The Platinum（Pt）-based catalysts exhibit excellent catalytic performance for the hydrogen evolution reaction（HER） while suffering from poor stability due to the weak interaction between the carbon support and Pt.Herein,a molybdenum-doped titanium dioxide(Ti 0.9 Mo 0.1 O 2 ) supported low-Pt electrocatalyst with stronger interaction between catalyst and support is applied to tune the electrocatalytic performance of Pt.The Ti 0.9 Mo 0.1 O 2 support can not only tolerate the corrosion environment in the catalytic system,but also generate strong metal-support inte raction（SMSI） between the oxide and catalyst.A facile solvothermal method is used to prepare Ti 0.9 Mo 0.1 O 2 as support to anchor Pt nanoparticles.The 5% Pt supported on Ti 0.9 Mo 0.1 O 2 catalyst exhibits 4.4-fold mass activity（MA） at an overpotential of 50 mV and higher stability than 20% Pt/C with only 1/4 Pt loading.The SMSI between the Ti 0.9 Mo 0.1 O 2 and Pt prevents the Pt aggregation to achieve excellent stability,and hydrogen spillover effect in the interface between Pt and support benefits the hydrogen production process.This work presents a novel sight for the fabrication and design of oxide supported catalysts in various catalytic system by reasonably employing support effect.

Abstract:Efficient and low-cost electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction are key issues for sustainable energy technologies such as solar fuel synthesis and fuel cells. Here we report that trimetallic PtNiCu nanochains can function as efficient hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution. In acidic media, the nanostructure produces a current density of 200mAcm−2 at the overpotential of 0.075V, which is almost 5 times more electrocatalytically active than the state-of-the-art Pt catalysts on the basis of equivalent Pt mass and is the best among the reported Pt-based materials for HER. Electrochemical and structure characterization studies indicate that the composition-dependent high hydrogen evolution activity is resulted from both the synergistic capabilities of the metal atoms and the abundance of clean active facets on the edge sites. Our findings suggest that controlling the catalytic reaction via well-defined pathways on the multi-metallic alloys provides a great opportunity to improve their catalytic properties for hydrogen evolution reactions.

Abstract:Water electrolysis is the most fascinating procedure for producing pure hydrogen due to its flexibility and convenience. Platinum (Pt) is the most effective electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), but its high price and scarce have greatly restricted its commercial application. Therefore, it is necessary to greatly increase the mass activity (MA) of Pt to meet the practical application. In the present work, the oxidized Pt atomic cluster supported Au electrode (PtAC-O-Au) with the ultra-low loading was prepared by the high vacuum magnetron sputtering combined with the electrochemical anodic oxidation. The (PtAC-O-Au)-1 electrode has shown a very high mass activity (MA), reaching 49.2 A mg-1Pt at an overpotential of 50 mV, which is 41 times that of the 20 wt% Pt/C electrode and 20 times that of the 0.5 wt% Pt/C electrode. Even at such a low load, the (PtAC-O-Au)-1 electrode has excellent apparent activity, and it only needs an overpotential of 41 mV@10 mA cm-2, which is close to that of the 20 wt% Pt/C electrode (37 mV@10 mA cm-2). Moreover, the (PtAC-O-Au)-1 electrode has exhibited an ultra-high specific activity (SA). The SA of (PtAC-O-Au)-1 is 12-18 times higher than that of 0.5 wt% Pt/C electrode and 36-56 times higher than that of the commercial Pt/C electrodes. More importantly, it is confirmed by the electrochemical analysis method (Cyclic voltammetry and CO adsorption-stripping) and the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) that the active site is the oxidized platinum (Pt-O-Au) on the surface of electrode. In addition, the density functional theory (DFT) calculations have elucidated that the absolute value of ΔGH*(Pt) of the PtAC-O-Au is close to that of the Pt(111), indicating its outstanding HER activity originates from its optimal ΔGH*(Pt) value.

Abstract:Abstract Designing Pt-based electrocatalysts with high catalytic activity and CO tolerance is challenging but extremely desirable for alkaline hydrogen oxidation reaction. Herein we report the design of a series of single-atom lanthanide (La, Ce, Pr, Nd, and Lu)-embedded ultrasmall Pt nanoclusters for efficient alkaline hydrogen electro-oxidation catalysis based on vapor filling and spatially confined reduction/growth of metal species. Mechanism studies reveal that oxophilic single-atom lanthanide species in Pt nanoclusters can serve as the Lewis acid site for selective OH - adsorption and regulate the binding strength of intermediates on Pt sites, which promotes the kinetics of hydrogen oxidation and CO oxidation by accelerating the combination of OH − and *H/*CO in kinetics and thermodynamics, endowing the electrocatalyst with up to 14.3-times higher mass activity than commercial Pt/C and enhanced CO tolerance. This work may shed light on the design of metal nanocluster-based electrocatalysts for energy conversion.

Abstract:Water electrolysis powered by renewable electric energy is a promising technology for green hydrogen production without carbon emissions, while highly efficient and cost-effective electrocatalysts with long durability are urgently needed. Here, we demonstrate oxygen-coordinated single-atom iron sites (Fe–O4) decorated carbon nanotubes with abundant vacancies as the substrate for stabilizing Ru clusters (CNT–V–Fe–Ru). The catalyst shows high performance for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in both acidic and alkaline media, respectively. The HER kinetics analysis demonstrates that the defective substrate with single-atomic sites could significantly improve the intrinsic activity of Ru species. Theoretical calculations also support the superior HER behavior of CNT–V–Fe–Ru with fundamental insights into metal–substrate interactions. The present study highlights a unique feature of single-atom catalysts for serving as advanced supporting materials, which offers tremendous opportunities to adequately regulate electronic structures of metal–substrate interfaces at the atomic level.

Platinum Atomic Clusters Embedded in Defects of Anatase/Graphene for Efficient Electro- and Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:Electro- and photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (e-HER and p-HER) are two promising strategies to produce green hydrogen fuel from water. High intrinsic activity, sufficient active sites, fast charge-transfer capacity, and good optoelectronic properties must be taken into consideration simultaneously in pursuit of an ideal bifunctional catalyst. Here, platinum atomic clusters embedded in defects of TiO2 nanocrystals/graphene nanosheets (Pt–T/G) are reported as a bifunctional catalyst for electro- and photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (e-HER and p-HER). High activity is delivered due to the charge transfer from the other part of the catalyst to the active center (Pt2–O4–Tix), decreasing the activation energy of the rate-limiting step, which is revealed by synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy, photoelectrochemical measurements, and simulated calculations. In regard to e-HER, it outperforms the commercial 20 wt % Pt/C catalyst by a factor of 17.5 on Pt mass basis, allowing for a 93% reduction in Pt loadings. Abstract:In this work, we demonstrate an easy way to improve the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity of Pt electrodes in alkaline media by introducing Ni‐Fe clusters. As a result, the overpotential needed to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm‑2 in H2‐saturated 0.1 M KOH is reduced for the model single crystal electrodes down to ~70 mV. To the best of our knowledge, these modified electrodes outperform any other reported electrocatalysts tested under similar conditions. Moreover, the influence of (i) Ni to Fe ratio, (ii) cluster coverage, and (iii) the nature of the alkali metal cations present in the electrolyte on the HER activity has been investigated. The observed catalytic performance likely originates from both the improved water dissociation at the Ni‐Fe clusters and the subsequent optimal hydrogen adsorption and recombination at Pt atoms present at the Ni‐Fe/Pt boundary

Abstract:As a clean energy source, hydrogen plays a critical role in the global mission to achieve carbon neutrality. Among varied hydrogen production techniques, water electrolysis driven by clean energy, such as solar or wind energy, is the most promising and viable option, with the advantages of celerity, high efficiency, cleanliness, and sustainability. However, this process necessitates a highly active and durable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalyst to enhance the overall reaction efficiency. This article thoroughly reviews the recent development of electrocatalysts exhibiting high-performance HER. In particular, a comprehensive look at noble metals platinum (Pt), ruthenium (Ru), iridium (Ir), and non-noble metals, including sulfides, carbides, nitrides and phosphides is taken. Synthesis strategies, methods for enhancing performance, and the correlation between structure, composition, and catalytic performance are discussed. We also pay particular attention to density functional theory (DFT) calculations to reveal the mechanisms behind the improvement of HER performance. Finally, the critical challenges associated with electrochemical water splitting and propose coping strategies are presented.

Abstract:Here, Ru clusters supported on nitrogen-doped hollow carbon spheres show a remarkable activity and durability toward hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) and H2-O2 fuel cell performance in alkaline media. Theoretical simulations indicate that Ru clusters endow a thermodynamically favourable HOR kinetics and an optimial hydrogen adsorption affinity.
