Abstract:2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) derived from biomass is a versatile platform chemical for producing various degradable polymers, especially polyethylene 2,5-furandicarbox-ylate (PEF). To reduce the high cost of feedstock, fructose instead of expensive 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) was used as the feedstock for producing FDCA in the acetic acid (HOAc) solvent by a one-pot, two-step method. Fructose was first catalytically converted into HMF and 5-acetoxymethylfurfural (AMF) in HOAc over the Amberlyst-15 catalyst. After the separation of only Amberlyst-15, the in situ-formed HMF and AMF were further catalytically oxidized to FDCA by air (oxygen) over homogeneous Co/Mn/Br catalysts following the free-radical chain reaction mechanism. HOAc was not only used as the solvent for the dehydration and following oxidation process but also served as the effective co-catalyst for the dehydration of fructose. The effects of catalyst species, dosage, and reaction temperature on the dehydration process and oxidation temperature on FDCA yield and purity were evaluated systematically. Under the optimized reaction conditions, a total yield of HMF and AMF of 50% and a final FDCA yield of 35% were achieved. Combined with experimental results and theoretical calculation, the reaction mechanism for fructose dehydration side reactions and the HMF and AMF oxidation reactions was proposed correspondingly. The proposed two-step, one-pot method using fructose as the starting material is a promising route for the commercial production of FDCA with the simple operation and viable yield.

Abstract:2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), mainly synthesized by the selective oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), is a biobased monomer for high-performance polymers. In this work, we have a comprehensive investigation on the rapid and highly selective oxidation process of HMF to FDCA in acetic acid (HAc) with Co/Mn/Br catalyst and air as the oxidant. It was found that both aldehyde and hydroxymethyl functional groups of HMF could be first oxidized in the sequential oxidation of HMF to FDCA, but 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) was the main oxidation intermediate. Apart from the side reaction of HMF overoxidation to COx (CO and CO2) and HMF condensation to polymers, a small part of HMF will be further oxidized to maleic acid (MA) and fumaric acid (FA) via the ring-opening reactions under severe conditions because of the instability of furan ring. To reduce the side reactions and maximize the FDCA yield, the effects of temperature, pressure, substrate solvent ratio, catalyst composition and concentration, and water concentration on the main reactions and side reactions of the HMF oxidation were systematically evaluated. Under the optimum conditions, the selectivity of FDCA reached 92% with the total conversion of HMF in less than 20 min at a high mass ratio of substrate and solvent (1/9), and the purity of FDCA exceeded 99.8%. The experimental results provide a great reference and inspiration for the optimization of the HMF oxidation process and the large-scale production of FDCA.

Abstract:In this contribution, readily available 5-methyl furfural (MF) derived from biomass was used as an excellent substitute of the chemically unstable 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) for preparing the commercial precursor 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA). MF was catalytically oxidized by air into FDCA in acetic acid over homogeneous Co/Mn/Br catalysts at 130-170 degrees C. It was found that both the substitute reactivity and the ring chemical stability have a remarkable impact on the yield of aromatic dicarboxylic acids. The effects of reaction temperature, pressure, catalyst composition and concentration, water concentration in the solvent, and substrate/solvent mass ratio on both the main reaction and the side reaction were investigated systematically and thoroughly using HPLC and an online tail gas monitoring system. Under optimized conditions, the oxidation of MF gave 100% conversion of MF and 75.8% yield of FDCA with 99.6% purity. It was also proven that the addition of 200 ppm cerium could work well at low temperatures (130-140 degrees C) for enhancing FDCA selectivity via suppressing the side reactions.
Highly Efficient Two-Step Synthesis of 2,5-Furandicarboxylic Acid from Fructose without 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) Separation: In Situ Oxidation of HMF in Alkaline Aqueous H2O/DMSO Mixed Solvent under Mild Conditions

Abstract:2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is a promising biobased aromatic monomer that can be used to synthesize novel biobased polymeric materials, but efficient synthesis of FDCA is still a great challenge to date. In this study, a two-step method is proposed to synthesize FDCA directly from fructose under mild conditions without 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) separation, using commercially available catalysts. In the first step, HMF was formed in 97.1% HPLC yield by dehydrating fructose in DMSO under the catalysis of Amberlyst-15 at 120 degrees C for 1 h. In the second step, the in situ formed HMF was oxidized in 3/1 (w/w) alkaline (K2CO3) H2O/DMSO medium under the catalysis of Pt/C at 100 degrees C for 10 h to form FDCA in 91% HPLC yield. The overall yield of FDCA from fructose reached as high as 88.4%. The conversions of HMF to 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (HMFCA) and HMFCA to 5-formyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (FFCA) are fast, but FFCA to FDCA is a slow and rate-limiting step in HMF oxidation. H2O/DMSO ratio, alkali type, alkali/HMF ratio, and reaction temperature are important factors affecting the reaction rate and selectivity. The synergy between alkaline aqueous solution and DMSO is the key to high FDCA yield.
Highly selective one-pot production of 2,5-furandimethanol from saccharides

Abstract:2,5-Furandimethanol (FDM), a promising diol, is produced traditionally via hydrogenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) derived from raw sugars. Because of the costly separation process and the unstable nature of HMF, direct production of FDM from raw sugars, especially polysaccharides, is highly desirable. In this work, we developed a cascade catalytic system (NiCl2/FA/Co-NC) to achieve the one-pot production of FDM from glucose and di/polysaccharides, in which NiCl2 was used as the Lewis acid, N-doped carbon confined cobalt (Co-NC) as the hydrogenation site, and formic acid as both the Bronsted acid and hydrogen donor. Under the optimal conditions of 160 degrees C for 6 h, similar to 60% FDM yield together with full glucose conversion was achieved, and Co-NC was recyclable five times without a noticeable deactivation. Kinetic studies showed that the apparent activation energy (E-a) of glucose conversion in the NiCl2/FA/Co-NC catalytic system was approximately similar to 87.7 kJ mol(-1). More importantly, this new catalytic system is also highly efficient for yielding 40-60% FDM from cheap high fructose syrup and di/polysaccharides in one pot under such mild reaction conditions. We believe that this work can lead a pioneering step forward for raw biomass transformation via multi-step coupling strategies, thus showing great potential for industrial applications.

Abstract:Efficient synthesis of valuable platform chemicals from renewable feedstock is a challenging, yet essential strategy for developing technologies that are both economical and sustainable. In the present study, we investigated the synthesis of 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) in a two-step catalytic process starting from sucrose as largely available biomass feedstock. In the first step, 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural (HMF) was synthesized by hydrolysis and dehydration of sucrose using sulfuric acid in a continuous reactor in 34% yield. In a second step, the resulting reaction solution was directly oxidized to FDCA without further purification over a Au/ZrO2 catalyst with 84% yield (87% selectivity, batch process), corresponding to 29% overall yield with respect to sucrose. This two-step process could afford the production of pure FDCA after the respective extraction/crystallization despite the impure intermediate HMF solution. To demonstrate the direct application of the biomass-derived FDCA as monomer, the isolated product was used for Ugi-multicomponent polymerizations, establishing a new application possibility for FDCA. In the future, this efficient two-step process strategy toward FDCA should be extended to further renewable feedstock.

Abstract:Converting biomass into high value-added compounds has attracted great attention for solving fossil fuel consumption and global warming. 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) has been considered as a versatile biomass-derived building block that can be used to synthesize a variety of sustainable fuels and chemicals. Among these derivatives, 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is a desirable alternative to petroleum-derived terephthalic acid for the synthesis of biodegradable polyesters. Herein, to fully understand the current development of the catalytic conversion of biomass to FDCA, a comprehensive review of the catalytic conversion of cellulose biomass to HMF and the oxidation of HMF to FDCA is presented. Moreover, future research directions and general trends of using biomass for FDCA production are also proposed.

Abstract:<p>Biomass conversion to value-added chemicals has received tremendous attention for solving global warming issues and fossil fuel depletion. 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a key bio-based platform molecule to produce many useful organic chemicals by oxidation, hydrogenation, polymerization, and ring-opening reactions. Among all derivatives, the oxidation product 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is a promising alternative to petroleum-based terephthalic acid for the synthesis of biodegradable plastics. This review analytically discusses the recent progress in the thermocatalytic, electrocatalytic, and photocatalytic oxidation of HMF into FDCA, including catalyst screening, synthesis processes, and reaction mechanism. Rapid fundamental advances may be possible in non-precious metal and metal-free catalysts that are highly efficient under the base-free conditions, and external field-assisted processes like electrochemical or photoelectrochemical cells.</p>

Abstract:The high life expectancy of the world population provokes increase in demand for food and energy. As a result, the intense industrialization and the application of fossil sources is responsible for high levels of CO2 emission and waste generation. To mitigate the CO2 emission a practical solution at the very short term is urgently needed. The capture of CO2 and its application in chemical processes for the valorization of residual biomass are of great importance nowadays. The application of CO2 in the selective carboxylation of furoic acid for the production of 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), a bio-based monomer, has been an important step towards obtaining biopolymers to replace petroleum-based plastics such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET). In this project report, we discuss on the current challenges for obtaining the 2,5-FDCA precursor from the furfural in two main routes involving oxidation and carboxylation via heterogeneous catalysis. We present the main objectives and discuss the importance of this research for the development of more sustainable processes.

Abstract:Biomass-derived 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is considered a viable alternative to petroleum-derived terephthalic acid as a monomer in the production of bioplastic. FDCA is currently mainly produced via a two-step process involving the conversion of fructose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) and the subsequent oxidation of HMF to FDCA. However, the storage stability HMF is far below the industrial expectations, further inhibiting the HMF-mediated route. Herein, we report efficient oxidation of 5-methoxymethylfurfural (MMF) to FDCA over a homemade Ru/hydroxyapatite (Ru/HAP) catalyst. A complete conversion of MMF and > 65% molar yield of FDCA could be realized under mild reaction conditions of 130 °C and 1 MPa O2 pressure. The effects of process parameters, including MMF/catalyst ratios, reaction temperature/time, and O2 pressure, were systematically studied and optimized on MMF oxidation. A plausible reaction pathway was also proposed. This study and our previously reported fructose-to-MMF work may provide a feasible MMF-intermediated route for large-scale industrial FDCA production.

Abstract:Abstract Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is recognized as a valuable product of hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) derived from cellulosic materials that could find future bioplastic application if a feasible separation process is developed. To find a commercially available solvent that can selectivity separate FDCA and HMF as well as the downstream process was supported by Py-GC-MS experiments with density functional theory (DFT). Evaluation of the sigma potential and sigma surface analysis showed that benzene and ethyl acetate have better extraction and selectivity of HMF, whereas FDCA indicated ideal behavior in DMF and DMSO solvents, where the hydrophobicity is changed by improving the hydrogen-bonding interaction between them. The up-down selection of classes of solvents based on the experimental data found by GC-MS revealed that polar molecular solvents (ethanol-water) are more compatible with carboxylic acids and alcohol compounds, while n-hexane is a desirable solvent for phenolic compounds. It is discovered that levoglucosan retains a significant fraction of water compared to other solvents that need to be considered for further economic and environmental analyses under the multifaceted framework of biomass-derived products.

Abstract:Furfural is an industrially relevant biobased chemical platform. Unlike classical furan, or C‐alkylated furans, which have been previously described in the current literature, the =C5H bond of furfural is unreactive. As a result, on a large scale, C=C and C=O bond hydrogenation/hydrogenolysis is mainly performed, with furfuryl alcohol and methyl tetrahydrofuran being the two main downstream chemicals. Here, we show that the derivatization of the ‐CHO group of furfural restores the reactivity of its =C5H bond, thus permitting its double condensation on various alkyl aldehydes. Overcoming the recalcitrance of the =C5H bond of furfural has opened an access to a biobased monomer, whose potential have been investigated in the fabrication of renewably‐sourced poly(silylether). By means of a combined theoretical‐experimental study, a reactivity scale for furfural and its protected derivatives against carbonylated compounds has been established using an electrophilicity descriptor, a means to predict the molecular diversity and complexity this pathway may support, and also to de‐risk any project related to this topic. Finally, by using performance criteria for industrial operations in the field of fuels and commodities, we discussed the industrial potential of this work in terms of cost, E‐factor, reactor productivity and catalyst consumption.

Abstract:As a potential substitute for petroleum-based terephthalic acid (TPA) in the manufacture of polyesters, 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid has been obtained through several feasible routes. Herein, a new chemo-enzymatic strategy for generating furan-2,5-dicarboxylic acid (FDCA) precursors from sodium gluconate via bio-oxidation and dehydration is presented. By coupling the bio-oxidation of gluconate 5-dehydrogenase with carbonyl reductase PsCR for cofactor regeneration, 5-keto-D-gluconic acid (5KGA), a specific product of D-gluconic acid bio-oxidation and a stable intermediate, was obtained with 99% yield. Statin intermediate ethyl (S)-4-chloro-3-hydroxybutanoate was simultaneously generated as a co-product via cycling cascade catalysis. Subsequently, the yield of FDCA precursor n-butyl-5-formyl-2-furancarboxylate (nBu-FFCA) generated via 5KGA dehydration and esterification reached 77.9%. Key intermediate characterization and theoretical calculation revealed that the decarboxylation and dehydration of cyclic 5KGA to furfural was the main side-reaction that prevents a better yield of dehydrated 5KGA. This route demonstrates good sustainability and market competitiveness compared to the existing FDCA synthesis methods.

Abstract:FtpM from Aspergillus fumigatus was the first carboxyl methyltransferase reported to catalyse the dimethylation of dicarboxylic acids. Here we report the creation of mutant R166M that can catalyse the quantitative conversion of bio‐derived 2,5‐furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) to its dimethyl ester (FDME), a bioplastics precursor. Wild type FtpM gave low conversion due to its reduced catalytic efficiency for the second methylation step. An AlphaFold 2 model revealed a highly electropositive active site, due to the presence of 4 arginine residues, postulated to favour the binding of the dicarboxylic acid over the intermediate monoester. The R166M mutation improved both binding and turnover of the monoester to permit near quantitative conversion to the target dimethyl ester product. The mutant also had improved activity for other diacids and a range of monacids. R166M was incorporated into 2 multienzyme cascades for the synthesis of the bioplastics precursor FDME from bioderived 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) as well as from poly(ethylene furanoate) (PEF) plastic, demonstrating the potential to recycle waste plastic.

Abstract:2, 5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is an important bio-monomer that can potentially replace terephthalic acid to synthesize degradable polyesters. Efficient selective oxidation of biomass-based 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to FDCA has been a significant but challenging work in the past decades. In this study, a novel molybdenum-vanadium oxide (Mo-V-O) catalyst was prepared by a simple method and showed excellent catalytic activity for converting HMF to FDCA. A high FDCA selectivity of 94.5 and 98.2% conversion of HMF were achieved under the optimal conditions with tert-butyl hydroperoxide as the oxidant. FT-IR, SEM, XRD and TG were applied to investigate the properties of Mo-V-O catalyst. After fitting experimental data with the first-order kinetics equation, the evaluated apparent activation energies of HMF oxidation were obtained. The experimental design and study were carried out by response surface methodology (RSM) to test the effects of reaction conditions on the catalytic process.

Abstract:The production of polymers from lignocellulosic biomass is currently one of the challenges to minimizing dependence on fossil fuels such as oil. The cellulosic fraction of this feedstock can be transformed into simple sugars such as glucose or fructose. These sugars can be further converted into 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), a precursor of polyethylene furanoate (PEF). The dehydration of sugars to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), a platform molecule to obtain products of interest, has been extensively studied. In addition, the oxidation of this platform molecule to FDCA has been widely investigated. However, a study of the direct or one-step production of FDCA from sugars is needed. This review provides a general overview of the recent research on the catalytic systems for the direct production of FDCA from sugars. Ideally, a single-stage system should be employed. The investigations carried out in a one-step process are first detailed. Different strategies have been tested, such as the physical separation of two phases, where dehydration and oxidation took place separately. In this case, an efficient transfer of HMF is needed. To avoid HMF transfer limitations, other authors focused on the investigation of the one-pot transformation of HMF without physical separation. The major requirement of these processes is to achieve catalytic systems functional for both dehydration and oxidation reactions. Therefore, other investigations focused on the study of two-step integrated systems are also analyzed in this review.

Abstract:2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is attracting increasing attention because of its potential applications as a sustainable substitute to petroleum-derived terephthalic acid for the production of bio-based polymers, such as poly(ethylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate) (PEF). Many catalytic methods have been developed for the synthesis of FDCA, including chemocatalysis, biocatalysis, photocatalysis, and electrocatalysis. Biocatalysis is a promising approach with advantages that include mild reaction condition, lower cost, higher selectivity, and environment amity. However, the biocatalytic production of FDCA has hardly been reviewed. To fully understand the current research developments, this review comprehensively considers the research progress on toxic effects and biodegradation of furan aldehydes, and then summarizes the latest achievements concerning the synthesis of FDCA from 5-hydroxymethylfurfural and other chemicals, such as 2-furoic acid and 5-methoxymethylfurfural. Our primary focus is on biocatalytic methods, including enzymatic catalysis (in vitro) and whole-cell catalysis (in vivo). Furthermore, future research directions and general developmental trends for more efficient biocatalytic production of FDCA are also proposed.
