Abstract:In this contribution, readily available 5-methyl furfural (MF) derived from biomass was used as an excellent substitute of the chemically unstable 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) for preparing the commercial precursor 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA). MF was catalytically oxidized by air into FDCA in acetic acid over homogeneous Co/Mn/Br catalysts at 130-170 degrees C. It was found that both the substitute reactivity and the ring chemical stability have a remarkable impact on the yield of aromatic dicarboxylic acids. The effects of reaction temperature, pressure, catalyst composition and concentration, water concentration in the solvent, and substrate/solvent mass ratio on both the main reaction and the side reaction were investigated systematically and thoroughly using HPLC and an online tail gas monitoring system. Under optimized conditions, the oxidation of MF gave 100% conversion of MF and 75.8% yield of FDCA with 99.6% purity. It was also proven that the addition of 200 ppm cerium could work well at low temperatures (130-140 degrees C) for enhancing FDCA selectivity via suppressing the side reactions.

Abstract:2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), mainly synthesized by the selective oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), is a biobased monomer for high-performance polymers. In this work, we have a comprehensive investigation on the rapid and highly selective oxidation process of HMF to FDCA in acetic acid (HAc) with Co/Mn/Br catalyst and air as the oxidant. It was found that both aldehyde and hydroxymethyl functional groups of HMF could be first oxidized in the sequential oxidation of HMF to FDCA, but 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) was the main oxidation intermediate. Apart from the side reaction of HMF overoxidation to COx (CO and CO2) and HMF condensation to polymers, a small part of HMF will be further oxidized to maleic acid (MA) and fumaric acid (FA) via the ring-opening reactions under severe conditions because of the instability of furan ring. To reduce the side reactions and maximize the FDCA yield, the effects of temperature, pressure, substrate solvent ratio, catalyst composition and concentration, and water concentration on the main reactions and side reactions of the HMF oxidation were systematically evaluated. Under the optimum conditions, the selectivity of FDCA reached 92% with the total conversion of HMF in less than 20 min at a high mass ratio of substrate and solvent (1/9), and the purity of FDCA exceeded 99.8%. The experimental results provide a great reference and inspiration for the optimization of the HMF oxidation process and the large-scale production of FDCA.

Abstract:2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), which is currently prepared by catalyzing the oxidation of 5-hydroxyme-thylfurfural (HMF), is a biobased platform compound with broad market prospects. Herein, a detailed free-radical chain reaction mechanism consisting of both main and side reaction pathways was proposed to describe the liquid-phase air oxidation process of 5hydroxyme-thylfurfural to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid over a Co/Mn/Br catalyst. The higher reactivity of the hydroxymethyl group than the aldehyde group for HMF oxidation was first explained according to the retardation effect of alcohols on free-radical reactions and the reactive activity of active hydrogen on the two substituents of HMF. Considering the low stability of HMF, the possible side reactions including condensation, decarboxylation, decarbonylation, and ring-opening for HMF oxidation were further investigated. Subsequently, to obtain more reliable model parameters, a lumped kinetic scheme was developed considering only the formation of important and detectable reactants, intermediates, and products. Since the total reaction rate is not sensitive to the reactant concentration, a fractional kinetic model was adopted to correlate the experimental results and evaluate the kinetic parameters.

Abstract:2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) derived from biomass is a versatile platform chemical for producing various degradable polymers, especially polyethylene 2,5-furandicarbox-ylate (PEF). To reduce the high cost of feedstock, fructose instead of expensive 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) was used as the feedstock for producing FDCA in the acetic acid (HOAc) solvent by a one-pot, two-step method. Fructose was first catalytically converted into HMF and 5-acetoxymethylfurfural (AMF) in HOAc over the Amberlyst-15 catalyst. After the separation of only Amberlyst-15, the in situ-formed HMF and AMF were further catalytically oxidized to FDCA by air (oxygen) over homogeneous Co/Mn/Br catalysts following the free-radical chain reaction mechanism. HOAc was not only used as the solvent for the dehydration and following oxidation process but also served as the effective co-catalyst for the dehydration of fructose. The effects of catalyst species, dosage, and reaction temperature on the dehydration process and oxidation temperature on FDCA yield and purity were evaluated systematically. Under the optimized reaction conditions, a total yield of HMF and AMF of 50% and a final FDCA yield of 35% were achieved. Combined with experimental results and theoretical calculation, the reaction mechanism for fructose dehydration side reactions and the HMF and AMF oxidation reactions was proposed correspondingly. The proposed two-step, one-pot method using fructose as the starting material is a promising route for the commercial production of FDCA with the simple operation and viable yield.

Abstract:2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), a versatile platform chemical, can be widely used for synthesizing various polymers and has the potential to replace terephthalic acid in the green polymer industry. To replace part of the relatively expensive and chemically unstable 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), 5-methylfurfural (MF) was used as the starting material for preparing FDCA. The aerobic oxidation of MF to FDCA over the Co/Mn/Br catalyst system was investigated in both batch and semicontinuous reactors with acetic acid as solvent. On the basis of free-radical chain reaction mechanism, a fractional kinetic model was developed to describe the oxidation process of MF to FDCA and the relevant model parameters were determined by data fitting using the least-squares method. Under the same reaction conditions, the FDCA yield of 73.5% and purity of 99.5% were achieved, lower than those of HMF oxidation to FDCA. The influence of stirring rates was evaluated to eliminate the liquid-gas transfer resistance. Furthermore, the effects of substrate concentration, reaction temperature, and catalyst concentration on the reaction rate were investigated systematically. Finally, the developed fractional kinetic model was proved to be reliable for predicting the product distribution satisfactorily by the semicontinuous experiments. The kinetic data and reactor model play an essential role in the optimization for industrially producing FDCA.

Abstract:2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is a promising biobased aromatic monomer that can be used to synthesize novel biobased polymeric materials, but efficient synthesis of FDCA is still a great challenge to date. In this study, a two-step method is proposed to synthesize FDCA directly from fructose under mild conditions without 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) separation, using commercially available catalysts. In the first step, HMF was formed in 97.1% HPLC yield by dehydrating fructose in DMSO under the catalysis of Amberlyst-15 at 120 degrees C for 1 h. In the second step, the in situ formed HMF was oxidized in 3/1 (w/w) alkaline (K2CO3) H2O/DMSO medium under the catalysis of Pt/C at 100 degrees C for 10 h to form FDCA in 91% HPLC yield. The overall yield of FDCA from fructose reached as high as 88.4%. The conversions of HMF to 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (HMFCA) and HMFCA to 5-formyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (FFCA) are fast, but FFCA to FDCA is a slow and rate-limiting step in HMF oxidation. H2O/DMSO ratio, alkali type, alkali/HMF ratio, and reaction temperature are important factors affecting the reaction rate and selectivity. The synergy between alkaline aqueous solution and DMSO is the key to high FDCA yield.

Abstract:<p>Biomass conversion to value-added chemicals has received tremendous attention for solving global warming issues and fossil fuel depletion. 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a key bio-based platform molecule to produce many useful organic chemicals by oxidation, hydrogenation, polymerization, and ring-opening reactions. Among all derivatives, the oxidation product 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is a promising alternative to petroleum-based terephthalic acid for the synthesis of biodegradable plastics. This review analytically discusses the recent progress in the thermocatalytic, electrocatalytic, and photocatalytic oxidation of HMF into FDCA, including catalyst screening, synthesis processes, and reaction mechanism. Rapid fundamental advances may be possible in non-precious metal and metal-free catalysts that are highly efficient under the base-free conditions, and external field-assisted processes like electrochemical or photoelectrochemical cells.</p>

Abstract:Converting biomass into high value-added compounds has attracted great attention for solving fossil fuel consumption and global warming. 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) has been considered as a versatile biomass-derived building block that can be used to synthesize a variety of sustainable fuels and chemicals. Among these derivatives, 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is a desirable alternative to petroleum-derived terephthalic acid for the synthesis of biodegradable polyesters. Herein, to fully understand the current development of the catalytic conversion of biomass to FDCA, a comprehensive review of the catalytic conversion of cellulose biomass to HMF and the oxidation of HMF to FDCA is presented. Moreover, future research directions and general trends of using biomass for FDCA production are also proposed.

Abstract:In this paper, the latest progress in the preparation of FDCA by the electrochemical oxidation of hydroxymethylfurfural is reviewed. The main work focuses on the reaction mechanism, catalyst design strategies, and the integrated system of proper cathodic coupling reduction reactions (inorganic/organic). It is hoped to serve as guidance for the identification and resolution of the electrochemical oxidation of nucleophile oxidation reaction. Catalytic conversion of biomass‐based platform chemicals is one of the significant approaches to utilize renewable biomass resources. 2,5‐Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), obtained by an electrocatalytic oxidation of 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), has attracted extensive attention due to the potential of replacing terephthalic acid to synthesize high‐performance polymeric materials for commercialization. In the present work, the pH‐dependent reaction pathways and factors influencing the degree of functional group oxidation are first discussed. Then the reaction mechanism of HMF oxidation is further elucidated using the representative examples. In addition, the emerging catalyst design strategies (defects, interface engineering) used in HMF oxidation are generalized, and structure–activity relationships between the abovementioned strategies and catalysts performance are analyzed. Furthermore, cathode pairing reactions, such as hydrogen evolution reaction, CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR), oxygen reduction reaction, and thermodynamically favorable organic reactions to lower the cell voltage of the electrolysis system, are discussed. Finally, the challenges and prospects of the electrochemical oxidation of HMF for FDCA are presented, focusing on deeply investigated reaction mechanism, coupling reaction, reactor design, and downstream product separation/purification.

Abstract:2,5‐furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is an important organic platform compound that has been widely used in the fields of medicine, pesticides, dyes, plastics and resins due to its unique structure and properties. In recent years, with the emphasis on sustainable development and green chemistry, the synthesis of FDCA from biomass has attracted extensive attention. The catalytic conversion of furfural (FF) to FDCA has the advantages of easy availability of the raw material, environmental friendliness, economic feasibility and so on, which is an important direction for FDCA synthesis in the future. This paper mainly reviews the prepare pathways of furoic acid (FA) and FDCA using FF as a starting material, including the selective conversion of FF and FA to target products under different types of catalysts. First, the research progress in the synthesis of FA from FF was summarized, and then the advances in the catalytic conversion of FA to FDCA was reviewed. In addition, the development of efficient and green catalysts and the optimization of existing synthesis protocols are emphasized as key factors to improve the yield and purity of FDCA while reducing production costs. Finally, the opportunities and challenges were discussed.

Abstract:2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is attracting increasing attention because of its potential applications as a sustainable substitute to petroleum-derived terephthalic acid for the production of bio-based polymers, such as poly(ethylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate) (PEF). Many catalytic methods have been developed for the synthesis of FDCA, including chemocatalysis, biocatalysis, photocatalysis, and electrocatalysis. Biocatalysis is a promising approach with advantages that include mild reaction condition, lower cost, higher selectivity, and environment amity. However, the biocatalytic production of FDCA has hardly been reviewed. To fully understand the current research developments, this review comprehensively considers the research progress on toxic effects and biodegradation of furan aldehydes, and then summarizes the latest achievements concerning the synthesis of FDCA from 5-hydroxymethylfurfural and other chemicals, such as 2-furoic acid and 5-methoxymethylfurfural. Our primary focus is on biocatalytic methods, including enzymatic catalysis (in vitro) and whole-cell catalysis (in vivo). Furthermore, future research directions and general developmental trends for more efficient biocatalytic production of FDCA are also proposed.

Abstract:With the aggravation of global environmental problems and the shortage of fossil resources, it is particularly important to seek environmentally friendly renewable chemicals and fuels that can replace fossil resources. As a typical biomass-derived product, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is one of the most important platform molecules, as its chemical structure allows the preparation of various high value-added products via catalytic routes. 2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) produced after oxidation of HMF, is a promising bio-derived building block and valuable monomer of polyethylene furandicarboxylate (PEF) being considered as a future alternative to polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Thermocatalytic transformation of HMF into FDCA in recent years has obvious advantages in terms of product yield and purity but suffers from the high energy consumption and high oxygen pressure, limiting its application in industry. Catalytic routes based on electrocatalysis and biocatalysis are developing technology for the production of these kind of high value-added chemicals due to green chemistry approaches, energy efficiency, mild reaction conditions and high selectivity, which is an important development direction for the effective utilization of biomass resource in the future. In this review, the catalytic routes for the preparation of HMF from hexose and the production of FDCA from HMF are systematically summarized. The effects of different catalytic systems on the yield of target products were analyzed, and the limitations of current catalytic systems were expounded. Moreover, the current research trends and future research directions are also overviewed in the hope of provide some feasible and valuable ideas for the development of efficient catalytic systems for the conversion of biomass into high value-added platform chemicals.

Abstract:Catalytic synthesis of value-added chemicals from sustainable biomass or biomass-derived platform chemicals is an essential strategy for reducing dependency on fossil fuels. As a precursor for the synthesis of important polymers such as polyesters, polyurethanes, and polyamides, FDCA is a monomer with high added value. Meanwhile, due to its widespread use in chemical industry, 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) has gained significant interest in recent years. In this review, we discuss the electrochemical oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) and summarize the most recent advances in electrode materials from the past 5 years, including reaction mechanisms, catalyst structures, and coupling reactions. First, the effect of pH on the electrocatalytic oxidation of furfural is presented, followed by a systematic summary of the reaction mechanism (direct and indirect oxidation). Then, the advantages, disadvantages, and research progress of precious metal, non-precious metal, and non-metallic HMF electrooxidation catalysts are discussed. In addition, a coupled dual system that combines HMF electrooxidation with hydrogen reduction reaction, CO 2 reduction, or N 2 reduction for more effective energy utilization is discussed. This review can guide the electrochemical oxidation of furfural and the development of advanced electrocatalyst materials for the implementation and production of renewable resources.

Abstract:This review summarizes the recent progress in the metal‐catalyzed selective oxidation of HMF into FDCA via two distinct reaction pathways. All the furan‐based value‐added chemicals alongside the two routes are systematically discussed. Specifically, the applied metal catalysts, various reaction conditions, and proposed catalytic mechanisms are comprehensively described. 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), one of the most significant biomass‐derived renewable resources, has been widely utilized to create furan‐based value‐added chemicals such as 2,5‐diformylfuran (DFF), 5‐hydroxymethyl‐2‐furancarboxylic acid (HMFCA), 5‐formyl‐2‐furancarboxylic acid (FFCA), and 2,5‐furan dicarboxylic acid (FDCA). Indeed, DFF, HMFCA and FFCA are key intermediate products during the oxidation of HMF to FDCA. Herein, this review aims to demonstrate the recent advances in metal‐catalyzed oxidation of HMF into FDCA via two different reaction routes (HMF‐DFF‐FFCA‐FDCA and HMF‐HMFCA‐FFCA‐FDCA). All the four furan‐based compounds are comprehensively discussed by the selective oxidation of HMF. Additionally, various metal catalysts, reaction conditions, and reaction mechanisms used to obtain the four different products are systematically reviewed. It is anticipated that this review will provide related researchers with new perspectives and speed up the development of this field.

Abstract:The utilization and development of biomass resources is an efficient solution to mitigate the fossil energy crisis. Based on the advantages of mild reaction conditions, rapid reaction, and high conversion, the synthesis of 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) by the electrocatalytic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMFOR) has attracted considerable attention. This review will summarize the recent advances of HMFOR to FDCA, including the reaction pathway and mechanism, as well as the catalytic performance of various heterogeneous electrocatalysts. The challenges and prospects for HMFOR are also focused on. Finally, it is expected that this work may provide guidance for the design of high-efficiency electrocatalysts and thereby accelerate the industrialization process of biomass utilization.

Abstract:2, 5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is an important bio-monomer that can potentially replace terephthalic acid to synthesize degradable polyesters. Efficient selective oxidation of biomass-based 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to FDCA has been a significant but challenging work in the past decades. In this study, a novel molybdenum-vanadium oxide (Mo-V-O) catalyst was prepared by a simple method and showed excellent catalytic activity for converting HMF to FDCA. A high FDCA selectivity of 94.5 and 98.2% conversion of HMF were achieved under the optimal conditions with tert-butyl hydroperoxide as the oxidant. FT-IR, SEM, XRD and TG were applied to investigate the properties of Mo-V-O catalyst. After fitting experimental data with the first-order kinetics equation, the evaluated apparent activation energies of HMF oxidation were obtained. The experimental design and study were carried out by response surface methodology (RSM) to test the effects of reaction conditions on the catalytic process.

Abstract:The production of polymers from lignocellulosic biomass is currently one of the challenges to minimizing dependence on fossil fuels such as oil. The cellulosic fraction of this feedstock can be transformed into simple sugars such as glucose or fructose. These sugars can be further converted into 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), a precursor of polyethylene furanoate (PEF). The dehydration of sugars to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), a platform molecule to obtain products of interest, has been extensively studied. In addition, the oxidation of this platform molecule to FDCA has been widely investigated. However, a study of the direct or one-step production of FDCA from sugars is needed. This review provides a general overview of the recent research on the catalytic systems for the direct production of FDCA from sugars. Ideally, a single-stage system should be employed. The investigations carried out in a one-step process are first detailed. Different strategies have been tested, such as the physical separation of two phases, where dehydration and oxidation took place separately. In this case, an efficient transfer of HMF is needed. To avoid HMF transfer limitations, other authors focused on the investigation of the one-pot transformation of HMF without physical separation. The major requirement of these processes is to achieve catalytic systems functional for both dehydration and oxidation reactions. Therefore, other investigations focused on the study of two-step integrated systems are also analyzed in this review.

Abstract:Biomass assumes an increasingly vital role in the realm of renewable energy and sustainable development due to its abundant availability, renewability, and minimal environmental impact. Within this context, 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), derived from sugar dehydration, stands out as a critical bio‐derived product. It serves as a pivotal multifunctional platform compound, integral in synthesizing various vital chemicals, including furan‐based polymers, fine chemicals, and biofuels. The high reactivity of HMF, attributed to its highly active aldehyde, hydroxyl, and furan ring, underscores the challenge of selectively regulating its conversion to obtain the desired products. This review highlights the research progress on efficient catalytic systems for HMF synthesis, oxidation, reduction, and etherification. Additionally, it outlines the techno‐economic analysis (TEA) and prospective research directions for the production of furan‐based chemicals. Despite significant progress in catalysis research, and certain process routes demonstrating substantial economics, with key indicators surpassing petroleum‐based products, a gap persists between fundamental research and large‐scale industrialization. This is due to the lack of comprehensive engineering research on bio‐based chemicals, making the commercialization process a distant goal. Direct Catalytic Route to Biomass-Derived 2,5-Furandicarboxylic Acid and Its Use as Monomer in a Multicomponent Polymerization

Abstract:Efficient synthesis of valuable platform chemicals from renewable feedstock is a challenging, yet essential strategy for developing technologies that are both economical and sustainable. In the present study, we investigated the synthesis of 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) in a two-step catalytic process starting from sucrose as largely available biomass feedstock. In the first step, 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural (HMF) was synthesized by hydrolysis and dehydration of sucrose using sulfuric acid in a continuous reactor in 34% yield. In a second step, the resulting reaction solution was directly oxidized to FDCA without further purification over a Au/ZrO2 catalyst with 84% yield (87% selectivity, batch process), corresponding to 29% overall yield with respect to sucrose. This two-step process could afford the production of pure FDCA after the respective extraction/crystallization despite the impure intermediate HMF solution. To demonstrate the direct application of the biomass-derived FDCA as monomer, the isolated product was used for Ugi-multicomponent polymerizations, establishing a new application possibility for FDCA. In the future, this efficient two-step process strategy toward FDCA should be extended to further renewable feedstock.

Abstract:2,5‐Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is a biomass‐derived monomer for the production of poly(ethylene 2,5‐furandicarboxylate) (PEF), which is a novel polyester that can serve as a sustainable alternative to traditional petroleum‐based poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET). Currently, the industrial production of FDCA depends on the thermocatalytic aerobic oxidation of 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) using heterogeneous catalysts in aqueous solution, in which process equivalent homogeneous bases are usually needed to promote the oxidation of hydroxymethyl and aldehyde groups and simultaneously improve the solubility of oxidative products via forming carboxylate. The involvement of massive base causes risks of equipment corrosion and necessitates subsequent product separation and purification with a large amount acid. In this context, the base‐free aerobic oxidation of HMF to FDCA has attracted much concern. Nowadays, by developing supported catalysts with multiple catalytic sites, using diluted substrate and finding good solvent for FDCA, much progress has been achieved on this field. This review provides the state of the art of the heterogeneous catalysis for aerobic oxidation of HMF to FDCA under base‐free conditions, highlighting the catalytic mechanism to shed light on the catalyst design principles.
