Abstract:The thesis I wish to argue for in this article is that spatial relations such as occupying (a certain place) and being 1 km distant from (something) are external. In the "Section 1" section, I shall introduce the distinction between external and internal relations and some other basic concepts in the ontology of relations. Afterwards, in the subsequent sections, I shall deal with different theories of space: substantivalism and relationism (the "Section 2" section); the spatial property theory (the "Section 3" section); super-substantivalism and super-relationism (the "Section 4" section); and spatial essentialism (the "Section 5" section). I shall demonstrate that, in all such theories, spatial relations need to be considered external. Otherwise, unacceptable consequences or spatial properties that are non-relational by mere façon de parler are in order. Finally, in the "Section 6" section, I shall briefly tackle length contraction in special relativity theory.

Abstract:This paper sketches a taxonomy of forms of substantivalism and relationism concerning space and time, and of the traditional arguments for these positions. Several natural sorts of relationism are able to account for Newton's bucket experiment. Conversely, appropriately constructed substantivalism can survive Leibniz's critique, a fact which has been obscured by the conflation of two of Leibniz's arguments. The form of relationism appropriate to the Special Theory of Relativity is also able to evade the problems raised by Field. I survey the effect of the General Theory of Relativity and of plenism on these considerations.

Abstract:This paper develops and defends three related forms of relationism about spacetime against attacks by contemporary substantivalists. It clarifies Newton's globes argument to show that it does not bear on relations that fail to determine geodesic motions, since the inertial effects on which Newton relies are not simply correlated with affine structure, but must be understood in dynamical terms. It develops remarks by Sklar and van Fraassen into relational versions of Newtonian mechanics, and argues that Earman does not show them to trivialize the debate.

Abstract:Ontology is the branch of metaphysics that deals with the nature of being. Ontology is currently used by philosophers, information scientists and psychologists. A sharing ontology is required for communicating between the communicating participants. And the formal description of ontology is fundamental to data exchange standards. In recent years, ontology has been used by geographers. Many researchers have recognized the importance of geographic categories, and the relationships and interactions between geographic categories. Geographic objects are intrinsically tied to space and exist at some time. In the geographic realm, cognitive categories expose certain special features of geographic objects at surveyable scale. And that these features denote the specific ontological characteristics of geographical objects. At the same time, there has been an increasing awareness of the importance of time, and time has been an integral part of geographical information science. Thus, the research of geographic ontology must involve a fully spatio- temporal view of our world, in other words, it is about spatial temporal geographic ontology. In this paper, firstly, it reviews the recently research of geographic ontology of many experts. And it mainly explores that what is the geographic ontology and what are the research contents of geographic ontology, and how to construct an geographic ontology? The domain of geographic ontology contains objects, relations, boundaries, events, processes, qualities, and quantities of all sorts. Geographic objects are typically complex, and they will in every case have parts. An adequate ontology of geographic objects must therefore contain a theory of part and whole, or mereology. And that an adequate ontology of geographic objects must contain also a topology, a theory of boundaries and interiors, of connectedness and separation, that is integrated with a mereological theory of parts and wholes. Secondly, the paper investigates the three levels- of reality: the spatial reality, the cognitive reality and geographic reality. Then it considers that geographic cognition is the key factor of geographic category. Geographic categories are related to natural, cultural, and fiat element, et al. Thirdly, in this section, the research is about an spatial temporal geographic ontology that contains space and time. The paper discusses the spatial classification and the temporal categories of geographic phenomena. Spatial objects based on object or field, which are continuants or discrete, must be represented suitably by geographic ontology. Temporal analogue of objects: there are events and processes of various kinds. Processes and events are the key elements that describe dynamic action of spatial temporal geographic objects. With the introduction of time, the requirement to take heed of the manifold interconnections between the spatial and the temporal must be proposed. The geographic phenomena can be represented as spatial or temporal, and as continuants or discrete, and as events or processes. These categories are not exist in isolation from one another. Spatial and temporal are restricted each other and represent the dynamic geographical phenomena all together. Lastly, the paper concludes that spatial temporal geographic ontology must take heed of the manifold interconnections between the spatial and the temporal and in the future a technical infrastructure be needed to provide a basis for GIS.

Abstract:In a number of publications, John Earman has advocated a tertium quid to the usual dichotomy between substantivalism and relationism concerning the nature of spacetime. The idea is that the structure common to the members of an equivalence class of substantival models is captured by a Leibniz algebra which can then be taken to directly characterize the intrinsic reality only indirectly represented by the substantival models. An alleged virtue of this is that, while a substantival interpretation of spacetime theories falls prey to radical local indeterminism, the Leibniz algebras do not. I argue that the program of Leibniz algebras is subject to radical local indeterminism to the same extent as substantivalism. In fact, for the category of topological spaces of interest in spacetime physics, the program is equivalent to the original spacetime approach. Moreover, the motivation for the program—that isomorphic substantival models should be regarded as representing the same physical situation—is misguided.

A Unified Semantics Space Model

Abstract:Location-aware systems provide customised services or applications according to users' locations. While much research has been carried out in developing models to represent location information and spatial relationships, it is usually limited to modelling simple environments (cf. [ 13,19,3]). This paper proposes a unified space model for more complex environments (e.g., city plan or forest). This space model provides a flexible, expressive, and powerful spatial representation. It also proposes a new data structure - an integrated lattice and graph model - to express comprehensive spatial relationships. This structure not only provides multiple graphs at different abstraction levels, but it also collapses the whole map into smaller local graphs. This mechanism is beneficial in reducing the complexity of creating and maintaining a map and improving the efficiency of path finding algorithms.

Abstract:Modern physics, via the standard model with Higgs mechanism and string theory for example, has supplied ether-like models and emergent general relativity scenarios that substantially weaken the usual defense of orthodox relativity and abstract, relational space-time in general. Over a dozen arguments in support of relativism against space-substances are discussed. It is not known whether perceived space-time is fundamental or due to a condensed state or string theoretical membrane. Emergent relativity indicates perhaps a whole tower of more fundamental space-times. Whether space is best described as a thing, an emergent phenomenon, or instead Kant's necessary, a priori pre-condition of the possibility of all phenomena, depends on which space-time is under consideration. Nevertheless, space-time is fundamentally abstract relational. This is supported by throughout acknowledging as well as illustrating the value of space-substance models, yet still keeping firm in refusing them on the deepest level. The gist is that even while refusing, physics and philosophy gain more from ether concepts than from plainly refusing them.

Abstract:Quantitative and cartographic methods are today often associated with absolute, Newtonian conceptions of space. We argue that some such methods have not always been and need not be so allied. Present geographic approaches to relational space have been largely advanced through radical political economic and feminist thought. Yet we identify quantitative and cartographic methods (taking as exemplars a range of thinkers, some of whom were most prominent in the 1960s and 1970s) that can contribute to these approaches to relational space. We suggest neglected methods to revisit, new alliances to be forged with critical human geography and cultural critique, and possible paths to enliven geographical imaginations.

Abstract:The doctrine of transubstantiation (as understood by Aquinas and much subsequent Roman Catholic theology) involves the counter-intuitive claim that accidents can come to exist independently of any substance. In particular, the spatial dimensions of bread and wine can come to exist independently. I point out that a key idea that motivated this claim was an aspect of mediaeval philosophy of nature: namely, relationism about space. I argue that if relationism is dropped in favour of substantivalism, then room is made for a model of transubstantiation which needn't involve an implausible commitment to independently existing accidents.

Abstract:The phenomenology of space is linked to the body experience, where the situatedness (Befindlichheit) plays the fundamental attribute of existence, and space becomes a structural element of meaning construction, while the space itself is constructed and extended by way of intersubjectivity or Mitsein in this process. The phenomenology of space, which is portrayed through embodiment, situatedness, meaning construction, and Mitsein, poses a new requirement for the writing of the history of philosophy in the age of globalization, which is to break the Western-centric perspective and to discuss the pluralistic philosophy based on the differences of the spatial experience. By redrawing the map of world philosophy in an intercultural perspective, the pluralistic philosophical traditions can establish the new self-understandings and self-positionings, in order to respect the diversity of human civilization, to unite the common values of all mankind, and to build a human community with a shared future.
Geography as a Science of the Earth's Surface Founded on the Third View of Space

Abstract:The third (or organismic) view of space states that space is neither lifeless nor neutral, but a living structure capable of being more living or less living, thus different fundamentally from the first two mechanistic views of space: Newtonian absolute space and Leibnizian relational space. The living structure is defined as a physical and mathematical structure or simply characterized by the recurring notion (or inherent hierarchy) of far more small substructures than large ones. This paper seeks to lay out a new geography as a science of the Earth's surface founded on the third view of space. The new geography aims not only to better understand geographic forms and processes but also - maybe more importantly - to make geographic space or the Earth's surface to be living or more living. After introducing two fundamental laws of geography: Tobler's law on spatial dependence (or homogeneity) and scaling law on spatial heterogeneity, we argue that these two laws are fundamental laws of living structure that favor statistics over exactitude, because the former (or statistics) tends to make a structure more living than the latter (or exactitute). We present the concept of living structure through some working examples and make it clear how a living structure differs from a non-living structure, under the organismic worldview that was first conceived by the British philosopher Alfred Whitehead (1861-1947). In order to make a structure or space living or more living, we introduce two design principles - differentiation and adaptation - using two paintings and two city plans. The new geography is a science of living structure, dealing with a wide range of scales, from the smallest scale of ornaments on walls to the scale of the entire Earth's surface. Decentring landscape: rethinking landscape analysis with a relational ontology

Abstract:Landscape theory has frequently been used as a base for scrutinising landscape characterisation and landscape analysis. However, this paper argues that if we aim to understand action-oriented methods for landscape analysis, then landscape needs to be decentred in favour of studies of the enactment of the landscape-project interplay. Relational ontology offers a fruitful ground for such examinations. Following a conceptual discussion, the paper draws on an in-depth interview with a senior landscape architect on his practise. The conversation captures how a complex set of theories on landscape, planning, methodology etc. is informing his methodological approach. Second, the interview shows how he centres the unfolding of relations through which the project and landscape can be understood, to identify what matters for the siting of the project. While this methodology remains constant, it requires different ways to enact landscape. This calls for further studies of the relational nature of such methodologies.

Abstract:As Christopher Alexander discovered, all space or matter - either organic or inorganic - has some degree of order in it according to its structure and arrangement. The order refers to a kind of structural character, called living structure, which is defined as a mathematical structure that consists of numerous substructures with an inherent hierarchy. Across the hierarchy, there are far more small substructures than large ones, while on each level of the hierarchy the substructures are more or less similar in size. In this paper we develop a new approach to representing geographic space as a hierarchy of recursively defined subspaces for computing the degree of order. A geographic space is first represented as a hierarchy of recursively defined subspaces, and all the subspaces are then topologically represented as a network for computing the degree of order of the geographic space, as well as that of its subspaces. Unlike conventional geographic representations, which are mechanical in nature, this new geographic representation is organic, conceived, and developed under the third view of space; that is, space is neither lifeless nor neutral, but a living structure capable of being more living or less living. Thus, the order can also be referred to as life, beauty, coherence, or harmony. We applied the new representation to three urban environments, 253 patterns, and 35 black-white strips to verify it and to demonstrate advantages of the new approach and the new kind of order. We further discuss the implications of the approach and the order on geographic information science and sustainable urban planning. Abstract:Theories of spatial term meanings often focus on geometric properties of objects and locations as the key to understanding meaning. For example, in English, "The cat is on the mat" might engage geometric properties characterizing the figure ('cat', a point) and the ground ('mat', a plane) as well as the geometric relationship between the two objects ('on', + vertical, 0 distance from ground object). However, substantial literature suggests that geometric properties are far from sufficient to capture the meanings of many spatial expressions, and that instead, force-dynamic properties of objects that afford containment or support relationships may be crucial to the meanings of those expressions. I will argue that both approaches are needed to understand the variety of spatial terms that appear in language and further, that spatial terms fall into two distinct sets, one represented by geometric properties of figure and ground and their spatial relationships, and the other by the force-dynamic properties of objects and their relationships. This division of labor within spatial terms has many consequences, with the two types differing in the nature of the acquisition problem and likely learning mechanisms, the extent and kind of cross-linguistic variation that has been observed, and the application of pragmatic principles to spatial terms. Speculatively, the two types may also be rooted in different cognitive systems and their neural substrates.
Spatial Properties of ACTION Verb Semantics: Experimental Evidence for Image Schema Orientation in Transitive vs. Reciprocal Verbs and Its Implications for Ideology

Abstract:Research in Cognitive Linguistics has argued extensively for the pervasive role played by space in structuring the concepts and conceptualisations associated with linguistic items and language usages. Space is a fundamental area of human experience. It is therefore not surprising to find that spatial cognition is exploited in the architecture of other cognitive systems like language. A key claim of Cognitive Linguistics has been that many of the meanings encoded by language are represented in the mind in the form of image schemas – spatially laid out representations of the recurrent structural properties of scenes and events (Lakoff 1987; Langacker 1987, 1991, 2008; Talmy 2000). Many of these schemas emerge from our bodily location in and interaction with space (Johnson 1987). This embodied view of language is developed in opposition to amodal or symbol-manipulation approaches to representation (Fodor 1975; May 1985). The motivation for a modal rather than an amodal account of meaning stems partly from commonalities perceived between language and the visual ‘parsing’ of a scene (Landau and Jackendoff 1993) and partly from the nuanced meaningful distinctions that a spatial representational format is able to capture between alternative linguistic structures (Langacker 1987: Talmy 2000). A further finding from Cognitive Linguistics has been that these experientially derived image schemas frequently serve as models for understanding more complex and abstract areas of experience in a system of conceptual metaphors (Lakoff and Johnson 1980, 1999). In this way, much of the conceptual system, as reflected in repeated patterns of language use, is grounded metaphorically in our knowledge and understanding of space.

Necessitating Spacetime

Abstract:We investigate structure that describes physical data in gravitational systems that is, to one degree or another, independent of the metric and affine structure. We dub such structure surplus structure and seek to incorporate it into our ontological commitments. An emphasis is placed on those structures which are required to constrain our models motivated by physical data. We look at the fall-offs of the gauge fields in asymptotically flat spacetimes, the computation of entanglement entropies in the AdS/CFT correspondence, and the addition of arbitrary parameters which modify the causal structure of spacetime in Kruskal coordinates. We also present a historical overview of the understanding of singularities in classical gravitation. Primary sources are turned to here. A toy cosmological model is also explored in which global topology is determined by an additional function which we prescribe as a dynamical $\Lambda$. Such surplus structure is classified using the language of intermediaries and positioned within the system of a shifting-scale ontology as introduced in prior work.

Space-time Constructivism vs. Modal Provincialism: Or, How Special Relativistic Theories Needn't Show Minkowski Chronogeometry

Abstract:In 1835 Lobachevski entertained the possibility of multiple (rival) geometries. This idea has reappeared on occasion (e.g., Poincaré) but didn't become key in space-time foundations prior to Brown's \emph{Physical Relativity} (at the end, the interpretive key to the book). A crucial difference between his constructivism and orthodox "space-time realism" is modal scope. Constructivism applies to all local classical field theories, including those with multiple geometries. But the orthodox view provincially assumes a unique geometry, as familiar theories (Newton, Special Relativity, Nordström, and GR) have. They serve as the orthodox "canon." Their historical roles suggest a story of inevitable progress. Physics literature after c. 1920 is relevant to orthodoxy mostly as commentary on the canon, which closed in the 1910s. The orthodox view explains the behavior of matter as the manifestation of the real space-time geometry, which works within the canon. The orthodox view, Whiggish history, and the canon relate symbiotically. If one considers a theory outside the canon, space-time realism sheds little light on matter's behavior. Worse, it gives the wrong answer when applied to an example arguably in the canon, massive scalar gravity with universal coupling. Which is the true geometry---the flat metric from the Poincaré symmetry, the conformally flat metric exhibited by material rods and clocks, or both---or is the question bad? How does space-time realism explain that all matter fields see the same curved geometry, given so many ways to mix and match? Constructivist attention to dynamical details is vindicated; geometrical shortcuts disappoint. The more exhaustive exploration of relativistic field theories (especially massive) in particle physics is an underused resource for foundations.

A partial defense of algebraic relationalism

Abstract:I defend algebraicism, according to which physical fields can be understood in terms of their structural relations without reference to a spacetime manifold, as a genuine relationalist view against the conventional wisdom that it is equivalent to substantivalism, according to which spacetime exists fundamentally. I criticize the standard version of algebraicism that is considered equivalent to substantivalism. Furthermore, I present alternative examples of algebraicism that better implement relationalism with their conceptual advantages over substantivalism or its standard algebraic counterpart.

Absolute versus Relational Debate: a Modern Global Version

Abstract:Suppose one seeks to free oneself from a symmetric absolute space by quotienting out its symmetry group. This in general however fails to erase all memory of this absolute space's symmetry properties. Stratification is one major reason for this, which is present in both a) Kendall-type Shape Theory and subsequent Relational Mechanics, and b) General Relativity configuration spaces. We consider the alternative starting point with a generic absolute space, meaning with no nontrivial generalized Killing vectors whatsoever. In this approach, generically Shape-and-Scale Theory is but trivially realized, there is no separate Shape Theory and indeed no stratification. While the GR configuration space version of these considerations was already expounded in 1996 by Fischer and Moncrief, the Kendall-type shape theory version is new to the current article. In each case, this amounts to admitting some small deformation by which symmetry's hard consequences at the level of reduced configuration spaces are warded <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://off.We" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> end by discussing the senses in which each of the above two strategies retain absolutist features, each's main known technical advantages and disadvantages, and the desirability of replacing Kendall-type Shape Theory with a Local-and-Approximate Shape Theory. Abstract:Given appropriate representations of the semantic relations between carpenter and wood and between mason and stone (for example, vectors in a vector space model), a suitable algorithm should be able to recognize that these relations are highly similar (carpenter is to wood as mason is to stone; the relations are analogous). Likewise, with representations of dog, house, and kennel, an algorithm should be able to recognize that the semantic composition of dog and house, dog house, is highly similar to kennel (dog house and kennel are synonymous). It seems that these two tasks, recognizing relations and compositions, are closely connected. However, up to now, the best models for relations are significantly different from the best models for compositions. In this paper, we introduce a dual-space model that unifies these two tasks. This model matches the performance of the best previous models for relations and compositions. The dual-space model consists of a space for measuring domain similarity and a space for measuring function similarity. Carpenter and wood share the same domain, the domain of carpentry. Mason and stone share the same domain, the domain of masonry. Carpenter and mason share the same function, the function of artisans. Wood and stone share the same function, the function of materials. In the composition dog house, kennel has some domain overlap with both dog and house (the domains of pets and buildings). The function of kennel is similar to the function of house (the function of shelters). By combining domain and function similarities in various ways, we can model relations, compositions, and other aspects of semantics.
