Abstract:Electret filters are widely used in particulate matter filtration due to their filtration efficiency that can be greatly improved by electrostatic forces without sacrificing the air resistance. However, the attenuation of the filtration efficiency remains a challenge. In this study, we report a novel strategy for producing an electret melt blown filter with superior filtration efficiency stability through a thermally stimulated charging method. The proposed approach optimizes the crystal structure and therefore results in the increased production probability of the charge traps. In addition, the re-trapping phenomenon caused by the thermal stimulation during the charging process can greatly increase the proportion of deep charge to shallow charge and improve the charge stability. A superior electret melt blown filtration material with a high filtration efficiency of 99.65%, low pressure drop of 120 Pa, and satisfactory filtration efficiency stability was produced after three cyclic charging times. The excellent filtration performance indicated that the developed material is a good air filtration candidate component for personal protection applications.

Abstract:Particulate matter (PM) and airborne viruses bring adverse influence on human health. As the most feasible way to prevent inhalation of these pollutants, face masks with excellent filtration efficiency and low press drop are in urgent demand. In this study, we report a novel methodology for producing high performance air filter by combining melt blown technique with corona charging treatment. Changing the crystal structure of polypropylene by adding magnesium stearate can avoid charge escape and ensure the stability of filtration performances. Particularly, the influence of fiber diameter, pore size, porosity, and charge storage on the filtration performances of the filter are thoroughly investigated. The filtration performances of the materials, including the loading test performance are also studied. The melt blown materials formed by four layers presented a significant filtration efficiency of 97.96%, a low pressure drop of 84.28 Pa, and a high quality factor (QF) of 0.046 Pa−1 for paraffin oil aerosol particles. Meanwhile, a robust filtration efficiency of 99.03%, a low pressure drop of 82.32 Pa, and an excellent QF of 0.056 Pa−1 for NaCl aerosol particles could be easily achieved. The multi-layered melt blown filtration material developed here would be potentially applied in the field of protective masks.

Abstract:Particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5) has become a public hazard to people’s lives and health. Traditional melt-blown membranes cannot filter dangerous particles due to their limited diameter, and ultra-fine electrospinning fibers are vulnerable to external forces. Therefore, creating highly efficient air filters by using an innovative technique and structure has become necessary. In this study, a combination of polypropylene (PP) melt-blown and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/zeolite imidazole frameworks-8 (ZIF-8) electrospinning technique is employed to construct a PP/PVA/ZIF-8 membrane with a hierarchical fibrous structure. The synergistic effect of hierarchical fibrous structure and ZIF-8 effectively captures PM2.5. The PP/PVA composite membrane loaded with 2.5% loading ZIF-8 has an average filtration efficacy reaching as high as 96.5% for PM2.5 and quality factor (Qf) of 0.099 Pa−1. The resultant membrane resists 33.34 N tensile strength and has a low pressure drop, excellent filtration efficiency, and mechanical strength. This work presents a facile preparation method that is suitable for mass production and the application of membranes to be used as air filters for highly efficient filtration of PM2.5.

Abstract:Particulate matter (PM) pollution in air is thought to be an important mortality risk factor globally. Most existing air filters face the extreme challenge of effectively removing PM0.3, which has the most penetration particle size (MPPS) of approximate to 0.3 mu m yet is particularly harmful. Here, an innovative in situ electret electrospinning/netting technique that can manipulate both solution phase separation and crystal phase transition is reported to develop self-polarized polyvinylidene fluoride nanofiber/net membranes with 2D networks and superior surface adhesion. By combining the true nanoscale diameter (approximate to 21 nm), small pore size (approximate to 0.26 mu m), and highly electret surface (6.8 kV potential) of the 2D nanonets, the synergistic effect of sieving and adhesion for MPPS PM0.3 is achieved. Such double capture characteristic enables the high-efficiency (approximate to 99.998%) capture of PM0.3 while maintaining low air resistance (approximate to 0.1% atmosphere pressure). Moreover, the nanofiber/net filters show integrated properties of superhydrophobicity, desirable transparency (91%), and long-term stability. The synthesis of such attractive nanomaterials presents a promising attempt toward the development of high-performance filtration/separation materials for numerous applications.

Abstract:Airborne particulate matter (PM) pollution has raised serious concerns over both the global climate and public health. Therefore, there is an urgent need for air filters of high-efficiency and energy-saving. Pore structure optimization and electret enhancement are feasible means to improve their filtration performance. Herein, a novel sandwich-structured electret composite filter with a low pressure drop and robust filtration stability was successfully designed and fabricated. The composite filter was composed of fluffy PS microfibers with large electric resistivity and high porosity, and PAN nanofibers with high polarity and small pore size. Benefiting from the fluffy structure constructed by electrospinning at the right humidity, the tortuous pore channels created by the appropriate mixing of microfibers and nanofibers, and the abundant static charges generated by the hybrid of polar and nonpolar polymer materials, the PS/PAN/PS composite filter possessed a high filtration efficiency of 99.96% for particles of 0.30 μm, a low pressure drop of 54 Pa and a satisfactory quality factor value of 0.1449 Pa-1 at an airflow velocity of 5.3 cm/s. In particular, the composite filter exhibited better electret stability and PM2.5 loading performance than the commercial ones, which guarantees its long-term storage and usage.

Abstract:Particulate matter (PM) pollution is a serious threat to human health. Zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) is a kind of metal-organic framework, and ZIF-8 not only can capture PM2.5 efficiently but also possesses excellent chemical and thermal stability. In this study, ZIF-8-modified soluble polyimide (PI) nanofibrous membranes were prepared via an electrospinning process. As a result, the PI-ZIF membrane shows high PM2.5 filtration efficiency (up to 96.6 ± 2.9%), superior thermal stability (up to 300 °C), good transmittance, excellent mechanical properties, and low pressure drop. The prepared PI-ZIF membrane with excellent comprehensive property shows a promising application in PM2.5 capture, especially in harsh conditions.

Abstract:Particulate matter (PM) pollution garners a worldwide concern and causes a tremendous health risk to individuals in public regions. To cope with the polluted circumstances and emerging diseases, nanofibrous membranes have been regarded as an ideal medium to balance the inherent trade-off between PM capture ability and air permeability. Even though polystyrene holds enormous potential in charge storage for mechanical filtration of PM by the electrostatic effect, its interception performance is restricted due to the smooth surface and the inferior polarity of molecules. In this work, an electrospun nanofibrous composite membrane with protrusions consisting of epoxide-modified polystyrene and carbon aerogel has been fabricated for effective PM2.5 filtration, which possesses a low airflow resistance and high removal capability. The hydrophobic and breathable nanofibrous layer could avert the accumulation of moisture to damage the nanofibers. This nanofibrous composite membrane has demonstrated a positive surface potential of similar to 1.9 kV in favor of attracting PM2.5. Benefiting from the coupling effect of protrusion structure, polar functional groups, and Coulomb force, the obtained composite membrane achieves a low-pressure drop of 28 Pa and a quality factor of 0.115 Pa-1 through physical sieving and electrostatic adsorption. The hierarchical nanofiber medium exhibits considerable promise for PM filtration application.

Abstract:Particulate matter poses substantial risks to human health, air visibility, climate, and ecological equilibrium. Electret materials are instrumental in air purification and personal protection, as they significantly enhance filtration efficiency without increasing pressure drop. Despite these advantages, developing electret filters with both high filtration efficiency and stable performance under thermal conditions and prolonged storage has proven challenging. In this study, we introduce a novel electret melt-blown filter fabricated through hydrocharging technology supplemented with the light stabilizer UV3346. The interaction of water and air molecules with melt-blown fibers generated abundant positive and negative charges, thereby amplifying the electrostatic attraction effect. Concurrently, UV3346 mitigated the formation of reactive free radicals and minimized charge exchanges, thus enhancing charge storage stability. Owing to the incorporation of UV3346, the UV3346/PP-0.8 melt-blown nonwovens, having a basis weight of 22 g/m 2 , demonstrated a filtration efficiency of 99.55 %, a low pressure drop of 59.45 Pa, and marginal decrease in filtration efficiency after heat treatment at 130 °C. Notably, the filtration efficiency experienced only a 0.30 % reduction after a two-year storage period, markedly outperforming commercial alternatives. This study is expected to inform future work on high-performance air filtration materials suitable for both air purification and personal protection equipment.

Abstract:Particulate air pollution is a global environmental problem, with PM 2.5 being the primary pollutant. One of the most effective ways to remove particles from the air is through filtration. Therefore, high-performance air filters are urgently needed to combat the harm caused by PM 2.5 . This study uses an electrospinning technique to prepare high-efficiency polyvinylidene fluoride/graphene oxide/polyimide nanofiber membranes. These composite nanofiber membranes demonstrate high filtration efficiency (99.6%), low pressure drop (123 Pa), remarkable thermal stability (450 °C), and excellent mechanical strength (7 MPa). Considering the advantages, these highly efficient nanofiber membranes can find advanced applications in industrial and civil infrastructures.

Abstract:Particulate matter (PM) pollution can severely affect human health. Currently, the most dangerous air pollutant is PM2.5 which refers to particles with a diameter less than 2.5 mu m. In order to mitigate the detrimental effects of PM2.5, there is an urgent demand for an air filter with improved performance. In this study, graphene oxide (GO), polyacrylonitrile (PAN), and polyimide (PI) are combined to prepare PAN/GO/PI nanofibrous membranes for efficient air filtration via electrospinning. The as-prepared PAN/GO/PI-6 nanofibrous membranes demonstrate high filtration efficiency (99.5%), low pressure drop (92 Pa), remarkable thermal stability (300 degrees C), and excellent mechanical strength. Built upon the above merits, this kind of nanofibrous membrane can account for widespread utilization in both industrial applications and civil health warrants.

Abstract:It is still a serious challenge to construct a water‐soluble polymer‐based air filtration membrane with high efficiency and good mechanical properties by electrospinning. In the study, using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polyacetylimide (PEI) as the main materials, both nanocellulosic crystal (CNC) and zinc oxide (ZnO) as the synergistic reinforcers and methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) as the hydrophobic modifier, the electrospun PVA/PEI/CNC/ZnO composite nanofibrous membrane with dual air filtration mechanisms was established. One of the mechanisms was the interception of the three‐dimensional network structure built by the composite nanofibrous membrane, the other was the electrostatic adsorption provided by CNC. Based on the dual air filtration mechanisms, the filtration efficiency of particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5) reached 98.20%. Moreover, the composite nanofibrous membrane displayed a good thermal stability and could still maintain more than the filtration efficiency of 83% and low‐pressure drop after treatment at 200 °C for 1 h. Moreover, the composite nanofibrous membrane could still maintain the filtration efficiency (97.3%) and low‐pressure drop (110.7 Pa) after five washing cycles after filtration, reflecting good reusability. Interestingly, the PVA/PEI/CNC/ZnO composite nanofibrous membrane was simple to produce and demonstrated excellent filtration efficiency, as well as excellent thermal stability, which could be an effective barrier against PM2.5 invasion.

Abstract:Particulate matter (PM) and airborne viruses pose significant threats to both the environment and public health. As the most viable solution to prevent the inhalation of these pollutants, there is an urgent demand for face masks with excellent filtration efficiency and low-pressure drop. In this study, a crimped masterbatch (CM) is added to polypropylene feedstocks to produce curling fibers through melt-blown spinning. These curled fibers exhibit low filtration resistance and effective dust-holding performances when used for air filtration. The effect of adding CM on fiber diameter, pore size, crimp, porosity, roughness, and surface potential was studied. The filtration performance of the materials, including the PM filtration capabilities, recirculation filtration, and loading test performance, were also investigated. The results demonstrate that the degree of fiber crimp can be adjusted by incorporating varying amounts of CM. This curling was caused by the uneven shrinkage that occurred due to variations in thermal contraction between these polymers. The curled fibers created a fluffy structure in the fiber network and modified the distribution of pore sizes within it. Under the same filtration conditions as sodium chloride aerogel, CM–2 (PP:CM 8:2) exhibited similar filtration efficiency (95.54% vs. 94.74%), lower filtration resistance (88.68 Pa vs. 108.88 Pa), higher quality factor (0.035 Pa−1 vs. 0.028 Pa−1) and better dust holding capacity (10.39 g/m2 vs. 9.20 g/m2) compared to CM–0 (PP:CM 10:0). After 30 days of indoor storage, the filtration efficiency of CM–2 remained above 94%. The self-curling melt-blown filtration material developed here could potentially be applied in the field of protective masks.

Abstract:In this work, we introduce a synthesis method for a nanofiber membrane made of polyacrylonitrile and verify its filtration ability with micron-size particles. The polyacrylonitrile nanofiber membrane was produced by electro-spun technique with a thickness less than 0.2 mm. The filtration experimental result from micron-size particle penetration proved that after 60-min deposition, the polyacrylonitrile nanofiber membrane successfully filtrated ~99% micron-size particles in solution. We found that uniform morphology, consistent nanofiber diameter without disordered beads will lead to a better filtration performance. This finding will provide a low-cost, environmental-friendly and straightforward filtration approach for future PM2.5 elimination in an aqueous and harsh environment.

Abstract:With the rapid development of the society, the severe haze weather caused by particulate matters (PMs) occurs frequently. Electret air filters have been playing an important role in purifying the air and alleviating the pollution. In this work, electret air filters were fabricated based on the polypropylene (PP) materials to investigate their filtering performance to the PMs. First, the electret performance of the PP-based films was mainly focused on. The charge storage stability of the electret films was found to be associated with the material recipe and the electret technique. Introducing 1% of tourmaline into the isotactic PP can realize the best charge storage stability, while adding the graphene can weaken the charge stability. And the electret techniques including the high-temperature pre-aging and polarization at elevated temperature were adopted to optimize the charge storage performance. Then, based on the optimized electret materials and electret technique, the purification performance of the electret filter elements dependent on the polarization condition was evaluated. The present work can provide an optimization strategy to improve the performance of electret materials and electret air filters.
Water electret charging based polypropylene/electret masterbatch composite melt-blown nonwovens with enhanced charge stability for efficient air filtration

Abstract:With rapidly increasing demand for clean air, especially in this covid era, high efficiency filtration materials have gained massive significance and have become need of the hour. Currently, corona-electret-based filtration materials are the most used filtration materials. However, their instability in hot and humid environment demands for designing better and stable alternative filtration materials. Herein, we report novel electret polypropylene/electret masterbatch (PP-EM) composite melt-blown nonwovens with enhanced charge stability using water electret charging (WEC). WEC based nonwovens not only display improved the filtration efficiency (99.3%) but also offer tuned pore size to reduce the pressure drop from 71.6 Pa to 63.2 Pa. Significantly, the micro mechanism of triboelectric initiation between single fiber and deionized water in WEC has also been proposed. Benefiting from the process of charging by friction and hot air drying, the charge stored inside the fibers is insensitive to temperature and humidity. The successful fabrication of WEC PP-EM composite melt-blown nonwovens paves the pathway forward for the design and development of air filters with reinforced charge stability.

Abstract:Airborne particulate matter (PM) pollution has become a serious threat to human health, thus it is highly desired for a high-filtration-performance and good-wearing-comfort face mask. Herein, a highly breathable and thermal comfort filter medium consisting of electret polyethersulfone/barium titanate nanofibrous membrane (PES/BaTiO3 NFM) integrated on a nonwoven polypropylene substrate was developed. Benefiting from the high porosity and optimized injection charge energy, the PES/BaTiO3 membrane was endowed with a good air permeability of 743 mm s-1, a modest water vapor permeability of 6.24 kg m-2 d-1, and an enhanced charge storage stability. In addition, the electret PES/BaTiO3 NFM1.5 medium with a low basis weight of 4.32 g m-2 still shows a high filtration efficiency of 99.99% and a low pressure drop of 67 Pa after being treated at 200 °C for 45 min, which is better than that of commercial media. Moreover, 3D simulation based on the characters of composite membrane was processed to graphically express the airflow distribution during the filtration process. Significantly, the NFM1.5 with a high infrared (IR) transmittance of 93.4% led to an effective radiative cooling to human body radiation. This multifunctional fibrous medium design may provide new insights into the development of environmental adaptive protection materials.

Polypropylene (PP) is widely used as the raw material of meltblown nonwoven materials and is the core layer in air filters, such as masks. In this study, an electret PP meltblown nonwoven with antibacterial activity was developed, and nano boehmite (AlOOH) and nano-ZnO were employed as electret and antibacterial agents, respectively. AlOOH (0.5–2.0 wt%) and ZnO (1.0 wt%) were doped into the PP matrix using a twin-screw extruder, and the resulting masterbatches were applied as raw materials to produce nonwoven materials via a meltblown process. The as-prepared nonwoven samples were characterized by means of SEM, IR and DSC/TG. After corona charging, the filtration efficiency was determined by a filtration tester, charge decay was measured by an infrared electrostatic tester, and the antibacterial properties were evaluated (evaluation method: AATCC 100–2012). A dosage of AlOOH greater than 1.0 wt% endowed the nonwoven material with high filtration efficiency, and 1.0 wt% ZnO brought about antibacterial activity. Corona charging was an effective means to charge the nonwoven electret, and the charges were quicker to decay in air than in a sealed bag. The as-prepared meltblown nonwoven filter is a remarkably promising filter for air filtration.

Abstract:Efficient acquiring and removal of a hazardous particulate matter (PM) have significant effects on human health. Here, we illustrate the fabrication of a superwetting electrospun polydimethylsiloxane/polymethyl methacrylate (PDMS/PMMA) membrane (EPPM) with multifunctional performance for PM2.5 capture and microdroplet transfer, where PMMA was added as a carrier polymer to the superhydrophobic PDMS, which has very low cohesive energy density. The obtained EPPM, which is composed of special bead-on-string fibers with a mean fiber diameter of 350 nm, shows a porous structure with an aperture of 7.87 μm (calculated by the bubble pressure method) and superb thermostability (up to 325 °C). The EPPM possesses an excellent PM2.5 purification efficiency of nearly up to 100% at a very low pressure drop (70 Pa, <0.07% of the atmospheric pressure) under the condition of high humidity (96 ± 3%), which is greatly advantageous over those hydrophilic filters frequently suffering the drawbacks of low efficiency or total invalidation in humid environments. In addition, benefitting from the superhydrophobic and strong adhesive properties of the membrane surface, the EPPM could complete the trace aqueous sample analysis such as "robotic hand" from superhydrophobic to hydrophilic surfaces without any contamination or loss and hold a high contact angle of 161.6° for water. Altogether, the EPPM may have technological advantages as a kind of novel fibrous filter in diverse environmental applications, including PM2.5 capture, separation, microdroplet transfer, and so on.

Abstract:Abstract Highly permeable particulate matter (PM) can carry various bacteria, viruses and toxics and pose a serious threat to public health. Nevertheless, current respirators typically sacrifice their thickness and base weight for high-performance filtration, which inevitably causes wearing discomfort and significant consumption of raw materials. Here, we show a facile yet massive splitting eletrospinning strategy to prepare an ultrathin, ultralight and radiative cooling dual-scale fiber membrane with about 80% infrared transmittance for high-protective, comfortable and sustainable air filter. By tailoring antibacterial surfactant-triggered splitting of charged jets, the dual-scale fibrous filter consisting of continuous nanofibers (44 ± 12 nm) and submicron-fibers (159 ± 32 nm) is formed. It presents ultralow thickness (1.49 μm) and base weight (0.57 g m −2 ) but superior protective performances (about 99.95% PM 0.3 removal, durable antibacterial ability) and wearing comfort of low air resistance, high heat dissipation and moisture permeability. Moreover, the ultralight filter can save over 97% polymers than commercial N95 respirator, enabling itself to be sustainable and economical. This work paves the way for designing advanced and sustainable protective materials.
