Abstract:In order to further enhance the compatibility and flame retardant efficiency of metal-organic frameworks (IRMOF-3), diphenylphosphinyl chloride was reacted with free -NH2 of IRMOF-3 to prepare an organic-inorganic hybrid (IRMOF-3-P, I-P), and its structure and properties were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis. Then, I-P combined with hexaphenoxycyclotriphosphazene (HPCP) was applied to the flame retardant modification of EP resin, and their synergistic flame retardant effects were studied in detail by the thermal stability, flame retardancy, and mechanical properties of EP composites. The experimental results indicated that I-P particles could be well dispersed in the EP matrix. I-P combined with HPCP could promote the char formation of EP resin, delay ignitions, decrease the release of heat, smoke, CO, and CO2 due to the release of phosphorus free radicals, and have a strong barrier effect, further leading to an increase in its limiting oxygen index to 32.0% and achieving an UL-94 V-0 rating. Finally, EP composites exhibited a good self-extinguishing property. These results proved that the combination of HPCP and I-P had an excellent flame retardant synergistic effect and endowed the EP composite with excellent flame retardancy. In addition, a moderate dose of I-P combined with HPCP can effectively improve the toughness and strength of the epoxy composite.

Abstract:The main aim of this work was to investigate the synergistic effect of expandable graphite (EG) and aluminum hypophosphite (AHP) on the flame retardancy of rigid polyurethane foams (RPUFs). A series of flame retardant RPUF containing EG and AHP were prepared by one‐shot and free‐rise method. The flame retardant, thermal degradation, and combustion properties of RPUF hybrids were characterized through limiting oxygen index (LOI) test, vertical burning (UL‐94) test, thermogravimetric analysis and microscale combustion calorimeter. The LOI and UL‐94 results showed that the RPUF sample with 10 wt% EG and 5 wt% AHP passed UL‐94 V‐0 rating and reached a relatively high LOI value of 28.5%, which is superior over other EG/AHP ratios in RPUF at the equivalent filler loading. Microscale combustion calorimeter results revealed that the incorporation of EG and AHP into RPUF reduced the peak heat release rate and total heat release, thus decrease the fire risk of RPUF significantly. Incorporation of EG and AHP improved the thermal stability of RPUF as observed from the thermogravimetric analysis results and also enhanced the thermal resistance of char layer at high temperature from scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Moreover, it could be seen from thermogravimetric analysis/infrared spectrometry spectra that the addition of EG and AHP significantly decreased the combustible gaseous products such as hydrocarbons and ethers. Finally, the synergistic mechanism in flame retardancy was discussed and speculated. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:Researchers have widely focused on the high flammability and releasing toxic gases of rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) under fire attack. In this work, the hybrid expandable graphite (EG) intumescent flame retardant is designed and fabricated for the fire safety of RPUF. Hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene (HCCP) is self-assembled on the surface and interlamination of EG (HCCP@EG) via water bath method and incorporated into RPUF matrix to improve the flame retardant efficiency of EG and the interfacial adhesion between EG particles and RPUF matrix. The structural morphological characterization indicates that HCCP@EG is successfully synthesized. HCCP@EG also exhibits good thermal stability and high char residues. Compared with neat RPUF, RPUF composites with 15% HCCP@EG show excellent flame-retardant properties and achieve a UL-94 V-0 level and a limiting index higher than 27.0%, which is due to the construction of a network structure of HCCP in the graphite lamellas and its synergistic and barrier effect. In addition, compared with EG, the presence of HCCP enhances interface compatibility between EG and RPUF, resulting in improving the mechanical property of RPUF composites. In summary, this work provides a facile approach to manufacturing high-performance RPUF products with outstanding fire safety.

Abstract:In recent years, flame-retardant rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) has once again captured the scholars' attention due to the growing the growing demands in the field of building energy efficiency. However, the inherent flammability of RPUF is high and the complexities of its flame-retardant mechanisms remain inadequately understood. In this study, a modified biomass material, amino starch phosphate ester was successfully synthesized which was then combined with expandable graphite (EG) and incorporated into RPUF. The research delved into the optimal ratio and minimal flame-retardant additive required to achieve the stringent UL-94 V-0 rating, while also thoroughly investigating the flame retardancy and thermal properties of the composite system. The findings revealed that with just 6 wt.% of flame retardants, the RPUF achieved the UL-94 V-0 rating, with a 41.1% reduction in peak heat release rate (pHRR) and a 23.7% decrease in total heat release (THR). Additionally, it diminishes the flame's size and width, leading to quicker extinction, while also lowering the internal combustion temperature of the polyurethane, thereby delaying both preheating and combustion times. The synergistic interaction between amino starch phosphate ester and EG during combustion results in the formation of a dense, continuous char layer, effectively inhibiting the pyrolysis and combustion of RPUF. This study provides a theoretical foundation for the development of efficient flame-retardant systems for RPUF.

Abstract:In this work, rigid polyurethane foams (RPUF) were flame retarded by adding 8 wt % expandable graphite (EG) and EG/Phenylphosphonic-aniline salt (FR1) flame retardant compounds. The adding amount of EG/FR1 compound is 8 wt % as well, and different ratios (8:1 and 12:1) of EG to FR1 were designed. Detailed characterizations of the density, cellular structure, and thermal conductivity of RPUF were carried out. An increase in thermal conductivity was observed as the FR1 content increased. The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) indicated that EG and FR1 accelerated the degradation of the foam but increased the char residue. The results from the fire tests showed that RPU3 improved the fire resistance of the RPUF on a higher grade than RPU1. In detail, RPU3 increased the limited oxygen index (LOI) value from 19.2% to 29.8% and reached V-0 rating on the vertical burning test. Results from the cone calorimeter test showed that the RPU3 effectively reduced peak of heat released rate (pHRR) in comparison to PU and RPU1 reference samples. A combined synergistic flame-retardant mechanism by the barrier effect of EG in condense phase and radical capture mechanism of FR1 in gas phase was proposed. Moreover, the compression performance of the foams increased by the combined addition of EG and FR1 at the same 12:1 ratio in the RPUF. A good interfacial adhesion between FR1 and PU matrix besides an increasing density of the foam, could be the responsible for this result.

Abstract:The hard segment of polyurethane foam (PUF) plays a special role in degradation and carbonization. In this work, flame‐retardant hard segment (HSFR) used to promote fire resistance was synthesized successfully. The limiting oxygen index (LOI), vertical combustion, and micro‐combustion calorimetry tests indicated the flame retardancy of the foam was elevated by introducing HSFR. When HSFR with an addition of 60 phr, the LOI value was increased from 17.0 to 25.5%, UL‐94 reached V‐0 rating, the peak heat release rate (p‐HRR) and total heat release (THR) decreased by 63.9% and 10.0%, respectively. In addition, the compressive strength of HSFR‐60 increased by five times. Further, the flame‐retardant mechanism of HSFR was proposed. In vapor phase, HSFR could generate PO and PO2, which combine with flammable free radical and hinder segment decomposition. In condensed phase, HSFR could promote the dehydration and carbonization of chain and the formation of dense and graphitized char. This article provides a practical method for the preparation of green, highly effective, and durable flame‐retardant PUF.

Abstract:A series of flame retarding rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) composites based on expandable graphite (EG) and aluminum hypophosphite (AHP) were prepared by the one-pot method. The properties were characterized by limiting oxygen index (LOI) test, cone calorimeter test, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), real-time Fourier transform-infrared spectra (RT-FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), etc. The results indicate that both EG and AHP could enhance the flame retardency of RPUF composites. Besides, the flame retardant effect of EG was better than that of AHP. The results also show that partial substitution of EG with AHP could improve the flame retardency of RPUF, and EG and AHP presented an excellent synergistic effect on flame retardancy. What is more, compared with RPUF/20EG and RPUF/20AHP, the heat release rate (HRR) and total heat release (THR) of RPUF/15EG/5AHP were lower. TGA results indicate that partial substitution of EG with AHP could improve the char residue which provided better flame retardancy for RPUF composites. The thermal degradation process of RPUF composites and the chemical component of the char residue were investigated by RT-FT-IR and XPS. And the results prove that RPUF/15EG/5AHP had higher heat resistance in the later stage. Compared with the RPUF composites filled with EG, a better cell structure and mechanical properties were observed with the substitution of AHP for part of EG. (C) 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:The amplified employment of rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) has accentuated the importance of its flame-retardant properties in stimulating demand. Thus, a compelling research report is essential to scrutinize the recent progression in the field of the flame retardancy and smoke toxicity reduction of RPUF. This comprehensive analysis delves into the conventional and innovative trends in flame-retardant (FR) systems, comprising reactive-type FRs, additive-type FRs, inorganic nanoparticles, and protective coatings for flame resistance, and summarizes their impacts on the thermal stability, mechanical properties, and smoke toxicity suppression of the resultant foams. Nevertheless, there are still several challenges that require attention, such as the migration of additives, the insufficient interfacial compatibility between flame-retardant polyols or flame retardants and the RPUF matrix, and the complexity of achieving both flame retardancy and mechanical properties simultaneously. Moreover, future research should focus on utilizing functionalized precursors and developing biodegradable RPUF to promote sustainability and to expand the applications of polyurethane foam.

Abstract:Rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) meets the demand for green environmental protection by utilizing vegetable oil as polyol. However, enhancing its flame retardancy is essential to address safety concerns for its widespread application across various commercial sectors. In this work, we successfully prepared Mxene@HNT, and then employed a layer-by-layer coating to immobilize Mxene@HNT onto RPUF surfaces using dual hydrogel (DH), thus creating the RPUF/M@H/DH flame retardant system. Comparative analysis against standard RPUF demonstrates significant enhancements in flame retardancy, achieving a "V-0" rating in the UL-94 vertical combustion test, with a limiting oxygen index (LOI) of 30.5 %. Notably, in cone calorimetry test (CCT), peak heat release rates (pHRR) and peak smoke production rates (pSPR) were reduced by 29.34 % and 14.95 % respectively for RPUF/M@H-3/DH, while experiencing a 151.5 % increase in carbonization yield (CY) compared to standard RPUF. Importantly, the mechanical properties of RPUF maintained well upon surface modification to obtain flame retardant RPUF/M@H/DH. Thus, this study offers a novel perspective on addressing both environmental concerns and flame retardancy requirements for RPUF.

Abstract:Driven by global environmental concerns, many efforts have been made to develop halogen-free flame retardants for rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF). These environmentally benign flame retardants are mainly divided into (i) reactive, (ii) additive, and (iii) coating types. The last decade has witnessed great progress of these three strategies, which enhance the fire safety of RPUF and maintain even improve the thermal insulation properties. This comprehensive review focuses on the up-to-date design of the reactive, additive, and coating flame retardants, and their effects on flame retardancy and thermal conductivity of RPUF. Moreover, the practical applications of the as-prepared flame-retardant RPUFs are highlighted. Finally, key challenges associated with these three kinds of flame retardants are discussed and future research opportunities are also proposed.
Enhanced Fire Safety of Rigid Polyurethane Foam via Synergistic Effect of Phosphorus/Nitrogen Compounds and Expandable Graphite

Abstract:In order to explore highly efficient flame-retardant rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF), phosphorus/nitrogen compounds and expandable graphite (EG) were successfully incorporated into RPUF by a free one-spot method. The combustion results showed that the fire safety of the RPUF samples was remarkably improved by the addition of phosphoric/nitrogen compounds and EG. With the incorporation of 22.4 wt.% phosphorus/nitrogen compounds and 3.2 wt.% EG, the RPUF composites achieved UL-94 V-0 rating. Besides, the total heat release and total smoke release of RPUF composites were reduced by 29.6% and 32.4% respectively, compared to those of the pure RPUF sample. PO• and PO2• together with nonflammable gaseous products were evolved from phosphoric/nitrogen compounds in the gas phase, which quenched the flammable free radicals in the matrix and diluted the concentration of combustible gaseous products generated from PRUF during combustion. The compact char residues which acted as excellent physical barriers were formed by catalysis of EG and phosphoric/nitrogen compounds in the condense phase. The fire hazard of RPUF was significantly reduced by the synergistic effect of phosphorus-nitrogen compounds and EG. This work provides a promising strategy to enhance the fire safety of RPUF.

Phosphorus and Nitrogen-Containing Polyols: Synergistic Effect on the Thermal Property and Flame Retardancy of Rigid Polyurethane Foam Composites

Abstract:In this work, the investigation mainly focused on the synergistic effect of phosphorus-containing polyol (BHPP) and nitrogen-containing polyol (MADP) in improving the flame retardancy of EG/rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF). BHPP and MADP were synthesized through dehydrochlorination and Mannich reaction, respectively. The influence of the weight ratio of BHPP and MADP was studied by thermogravimetric analysis and limiting oxygen index (LOI) tests. The results demonstrated that the optimal weight percentage of BHPP and MADP in flame-retarding RPUF was 1/1. In addition, the incorporation of expandable graphite (EG) into the RPUF/BHPP/MADP system could greatly improve the flame-retardant properties of RPUF composites. When the content of EG was 15 wt %, LOI value of RPUF composites reached 33.5%. Furthermore, the value of the peak of the heat release rate was reduced by 52.4% compared to that of pristine RPUF. Based on the analysis and discussion, a condensed flame-retardant mechanism was primarily proposed.
Fabrication of Fire Safe Rigid Polyurethane Foam with Reduced Release of CO and NOx and Excellent Physical Properties by Combining Phosphine Oxide-Containing Hyperbranched Polyol and Expandable Graphite

Abstract:In this work, a novel phosphine oxide-containing hyperbranched polyol (POCHP) was synthesized. Then POCHP and/or expandable graphite (EG) were incorporated into rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF). EG increases foam density and deteriorates compressive strength and thermal conductivity, but POCHP has opposite effects. A 12.8% improvement of compressive strength and slightly decreased density and thermal conductivity are achieved by ERPUF50 containing POCHP and EG. And it reaches a limited oxygen index of 30.0% and UL-94 V0 rating with immediate self-extinguishing behavior after removing flame. The peak heat release rate, total heat release and total smoke production of ERPUF50 are reduced by 71.1%, 52.2% and 71.1% respectively via biphase flame retardant mechanisms. Interesting phenomena were observed that POCHP promotes the intumescence of EG after combustion. The results of combustion gas analysis reveal that single POCHP or EG reduces the production of CO but increases the generation of NOx. ERPUF50 exhibits a 52% decrement of CO and an unexpected 40% diminishment of NOx. ERPUF50 with excellent comprehensive properties can not only be used as fire safe thermal insulation material with high physical performances, but also significantly reduce the release of contaminative smoke, CO and NOx in fires and waste RPUF disposal by combustion.

Abstract:Green and environment-friendly high-efficiency flame retardants (FRs) are crucial to polymer FR modification. Here, a green FR 2-((bis(2-hydroxyethyl)amino)methyl)-5,5-dimethyl-1,3,2-dioxaphosphinane 2-oxide (HAMPP) was synthesized. The HAMPP was incorporated with a cyclic phosphorus structure, which will readily carbonize to inhibit or prevent further combustion. Moreover, the HAMPP contains dihydroxy reactive groups that can be used as a monomer in the polymerization reaction to obtain the main chain containing phosphorus polymer. Research studies on FRs were based on flexible polyurethane foam (PU-HAMPPs). The limiting oxygen index value of PU foam with 10% HAMPP could reach 23.7%, passing a UL-94 V-0 rating together. With the addition of HAMPP, the peak heat release rate of PU foam decreased significantly, the decomposition temperature increased, the heat release capacity reduced by 31%, and the char yield increased by 42%. The chemical composition and morphology of the char residual have been studied and analyzed thoroughly. We find that HAMPP forms a molten viscous protective layer uniformly on the material surface and releases some incombustible gases. These indicated that the FR exploited both condensed-phase and gas-phase flame retardancy mechanisms. Besides, the addition of FRs improved the mechanical properties.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Summary diagrams have been annotated. In this work, FR‐PNX, an alkylphosphate oligomer was introduced into rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) to fabricate FR‐PNX/RPUF composites. The flame retardancy, thermal stability, and combustion properties of composites were investigated by limiting oxygen index (LOI), thermogravimetric (TG), microcalorimetry (MCC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), et al. The flame retardancy tests demonstrated that the incorporation of 50 phr of FR‐PNX yielded composites that the highest LOI of 23.6 vol% and achieved a V‐0 rating in the UL‐94 test. TG results indicated that FR‐PNX promoted the decomposition of FR‐RPUF in the process, but enhanced the high‐temperature stability of the composites. MCC analyses revealed that the addition of FR‐PNX suppressed the heat release during combustion, and FR‐PNX50/RPUF exhibited the lowest total heat release of 17.3 MJ/m2, a 35% reduction compared to the pure sample. Moreover, the peak heat release rate was decreased to 83.1 W/g, representing a 46.9% reduction compared to pure RPUF. SEM and Raman analyses of the char residue demonstrated that the incorporation of FR‐PNX facilitated the formation of a dense and continuous char layer in the FR‐RPUF, with increased graphitization degree of the char layer, thereby enhancing the composite's fire resistance through the development of a more stable fire barrier.

Abstract:The reactive type flame retardants have been applied in rigid polyurethane foams (RPUF) owing to their excellent durability and minimal negative effect on the physical properties, however, their flame retardant efficiency cannot meet the requirements in many practical application scenarios. In this work, two reactive-type flame retardants with several hydroxyl groups were synthesized by a solvent-free transesterification between erythritol and dimethyl methyl phosphonate (DMMP), and they were then introduced into RPUF by reacting with isocyanate respectively. The flammability of the as-prepared RPUF samples was evaluated by limiting oxygen index (LOI) and cone calorimeter tests. With the presence of 10 phr as prepared flame retardant, the LOI value of RPUF was improved from 18.3 % to 29.8 %, and the peak heat release rate (pHRR) and total heat release (THR) were reduced by 31.4 % and 47.8 % respectively in contrast to that of control RPUF. Furthermore, the compressive strength and thermal conductivity of RPUF containing reactive flame retardants were similar to those of control RPUF. This study provides an innovative method for the clean production of commercial RPUF with fire safety by using a modified phosphorus ester.

Abstract:The low‐flame retardancy properties of pure rigid polyurethane (PU) foams hindered its practical application in many cases for the safety and environmental concern. Although rigid PU foams with flame retardants can achieve standard of fire resistance, addition of flame retardants in PU can worsen its mechanical properties, enlarge production cost, and induce safety problems. Therefore, green reactive flame‐retardant polyether polyols (GPP) have been considered as one of the best solutions. In this work, the GPP by the ring‐opening polymerization of the self‐made environmentally friendly melamine resin (EFMR) with propylene oxide are synthesized with their hydroxyl number of 390 ~ 420 mg KOH/g, and the structure of GPP product was identified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance. The flame‐retardant rigid polyurethane foams (RPUFs) were successfully prepared with GPP as the polyol, the results showed that the addition of GPP can greatly improve the thermal stability and flame retardancy of the RPUFs prepared. The RPUF were prepared by fully GPP with 30.4% of limiting oxygen index and 350 kpa of compressive strength. These properties are qualified for commercial utilization. Therefore, this GPP provides great prospect in the development of specified flame‐retardant PU materials.

Abstract:In order to improve the flame-retardant effect and thermal behaviour of rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF), the flame retardancy of sodium alginate (SA), aluminium diethyl phosphite (ADPO2) and expandable graphite (EG) were proposed. First, the structures of RPUF with or without flame retardancy were confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Additionally, the combustion behaviours and thermal performance of the flame-retardant polyurethane were evaluated through thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), limiting oxygen index (LOI) tests, and UL-94 tests. Finally, the cone calorimeter results reveled the RPUF/5ADPO2/7.5SA/7.5EG exhibit excellent thermodynamic properties. The results of the heat release rate (HRR), total heat release (THR), total smoke production (TSP), and smoke production rate (SPR) could demonstrate the smoke-suppressant and flame-retardant of polyurethane. The system of RPUF/ADPO2/SA/EG showed excellent flame-retardant in polyurethane.
