Abstract:Background: The purpose of this study was to identify injunctive norms for cyberbullying prevention among youths, parents, and primary care providers, as well as barriers to preventive behaviours. Methods: Semi-structured interviews on the topic of cyberbullying were conducted with 29 adolescents, 13 paediatricians, and 15 parents recruited from 3 primary care sites. Transcripts were coded for themes related to various stakeholders' perceived roles in cyberbullying prevention and barriers to preventive behaviours. Results: Participants reported perceptions that youths should intervene in the moment and get outside help for others. Fear of repercussions emerged as a significant barrier to these behaviours. Participants believed that parents should communicate with their children and monitor and supervise youths' online activities. Barriers included perception of priority and low parental efficacy or naiveté. Participants believed that providers should provide education and resources and ask screening questions; the most frequently identified barrier to those behaviours was the perception of providers' role. Conclusions: Youths and providers may not be aware of their potential to prevent cyberbullying before it occurs. Educating youths, parents, and providers about cyberbullying prevention is warranted.
Cyberbullying among young people: An international literature review

Abstract:This paper sets out to provide an international literature review on young people’s involvement in cyber violence and cyberbullying. Over the last decades, a significant amount of previously absent research has been completed. Yet consensus on their definition and characteristics is still lacking. This impacts on prevalence studies, which provide inconsistent findings due to differences in methods and what is genuinely observed. Nevertheless, there is evidence that cyber violence and cyberbullying are part of young people’s online experiences and that they negatively impact on their physical and psychological wellbeing and school life. Research on associated risks reach a consensus on various aspects: the impact of time spent online; to be actively involved in online social networking; the existence of gender differences as well as the importance of cultural backgrounds and contexts. The latter were highlighted through cross-national studies. The differences in terms of socialization and cultural characteristics require some further investigations in order to inform prevention and remediation.

Cyberbullying: Review of an Old Problem Gone Viral

Abstract:Purpose: Despite being relatively new, cyberbullying is now well recognized as a serious public health problem affecting children and adolescents. Scientific exploration has lagged media attention, but a synthesis of studies across several disciplines permits an understanding of its epidemiology, phenomenology, mental health dimensions, and management tools. Methods: To assess current knowledge of cyberbullying, we searched the MEDLINE, PubMed and PsycINFO databases for articles on "cyberbullying" and related designations. The Google search engine was used to capture otherwise unpublished legislative, governmental, and community response data and to help identify relevant books and book chapters. Results: A significant proportion of children and adolescents (20%-40%) have been victims of cyberbullying, with females and sexual minorities seemingly at higher risk. Perpetrators are more likely to be male. By nature of the electronic platform, there seems to be an easier path to the bully-victim phenomenon (victims who become bullies or vice versa) than that in traditional bullying. A nonlinear relationship with age is suggested, but demographic data overall are preliminary. Accompanying psychopathology, including an increasingly well-established link to suicidality, is common. Several prevention and management approaches have been proposed to help prevent cyberbullying or mitigate its effects. Discussion: Cyberbullying's seeming ubiquity, its disproportionate toll on vulnerable populations (e.g., children and sexual minorities), the link with suicidality, and the expected continued rise in Internet penetrance and connectivity make confronting it an urgent matter. A multipronged approach is most likely to succeed and would include: educational media campaigns; school-based programs; parental oversight and involvement; legislative action; and screening and evidence-based interventions by health care providers, especially pediatricians and mental health professionals. Conclusions: More research is needed into cyberbullying, but available data suggest a serious problem whose consequences are real and should not be dismissed as a "virtual" by-product of an increasingly digitalized childhood and adolescence.

Abstract:We can say that now social media is at the peak of its capabilities. But you need to remember that social media has both a positive side and a negative one. This issue is particularly acute when it comes to vulnerable sections of society, such as children and adolescents. UNICEF researchers cite statistics that every year 175,000 children find themselves on the Internet for the first time. At the moment, it is known that every third Internet user is a child. Despite this, we cannot fully ensure their safety. The issue of quality online content also remains relevant. Abstract:The display of aggressive behaviours among the digital generation has modernized the traditional attributes of bullying. Cases of bullying are no longer confined to physical altercations between peers in school hallways or hostile verbal exchanges during recess periods. With the progression of technology, educators must recognize the changes of our students’ behaviours as lives become modified by the digital era. The issues of cyber bullying have gained global visibility due to the disheartening publicized cases of the victims. While the families of victims mourn the loss of their children and earnestly seek to understand the cause of each account, researchers actively examine and implement preventative measures in hopes of educating individuals (e.g., general and special educators, parents, students, community professionals) to distinguish the warning signs of aggressive behaviours in digital forms.

Abstract:Bullying is a serious public health concern that is associated with significant negative mental, social, and physical outcomes. Technological advances have increased adolescents’ use of social media, and online communication platforms have exposed adolescents to another mode of bullying— cyberbullying. Prevention and intervention materials, from websites and tip sheets to classroom curriculum, have been developed to help youth, parents, and teachers address cyberbullying. While youth and parents are willing to disclose their experiences with bullying to their health care providers, these disclosures need to be taken seriously and handled in a caring manner. Health care providers need to include questions about bullying on intake forms to encourage these disclosures. The aim of this article is to examine the current status of cyberbullying prevention and intervention. Research support for several school-based intervention programs is summarised. Recommendations for future research are provided.

Abstract:Abstract With the wide application of Internet, the negative sides related to cyberspace become prominent, including cyberbullying. In such a sense, it is necessary to delimit and define cyberbullying as one important legal term for some relevant cybercrimes. Cyberbullying, in its different forms, is common among children and adolescents, and is facilitated by the increased use of technology. But there is no global legal definition and standard in this area. The authors consider it significant to take into account the international perspective of instrumentalization of law in respect of cyberbullying, which may lead to the formulation of such a definition. This article first explores the definitions, legal mechanisms and its relevant laws in the US, the EU and China to find out their similarities and differences. It is found that cyberbullying as a sign is socially-constituted, is interpreted differently in various jurisdictions, which indicates that the exploration of a sign should be located within and is intertwined with social, cultural and historical backgrounds. This research, as a case study, also provides useful implications for the understanding and interpretation of legal terms in a more general context. At the same time, cultures nowadays pervade one another, and so phenomena that were initially local may quickly and unexpectedly become global. This is the case of cyberbullying, initially associated with children and adolescents as perpetrators and victims, being now also practiced by adults who harass other adults.

Abstract:Cyberbullying often occurs in group-based situations; therefore, how young people respond when they witness cyberbullying is important in the process of combating the issue. This study examined how young people perceive the severity of cyberbullying incidents and how they respond as a bystander according to different factors associated with cyberbullying (i.e., publicity, anonymity, type, and victim response). The final sample was 990 (545 female, 403 male, 42 non-disclosed) students aged between 11 and 20 years (M age = 13.16, SD age = 2.14) from two schools and one college in England. Participants responded to 24 hypothetical vignettes which were manipulated to measure publicity, anonymity, type of cyberbullying, and victim response. Participants responded to items assessing a. perceived severity, and b. bystander responses. The bystander responses examined were: ignore the incident, encourage the bully, seek adult help, seek friend help, provide emotional support to the victim, and challenge the bully. Perceived severity was higher in public scenarios, when the bully was anonymous, and when the victim was upset. Victim response was the most influential factor across all response strategies on how young people react to cyberbullying, followed by the publicity of the incident, the anonymity of the bully, and to a limited extent, the type of cyberbullying. The results suggest that bystanders do respond differently to cyberbullying according to the publicity, anonymity, type of cyberbullying, and victim response.

Abstract:Cyberbullying is bullying using digital technology. This can happen on social media, chat platforms, gaming platforms, and mobile phones. Meanwhile, according to Think Before Text, cyberbullying is aggressive and purposeful behavior carried out by a group or individual, using electronic media, repeatedly from time to time, against someone who is deemed not to easily resist this action. So, there is a difference in power between the perpetrator and the victim. The difference in strength in this case refers to a perception of physical and mental capacity. The nature of the research used is normative legal research and the data collection method used in this research is secondary data obtained through library research, namely by conducting research on various literature such as books, laws, with the aim of to look for concepts, or understandings related to the problem of Cyber Bullying Behavior Due to Social Media Which Affects Teenagers. The physical impact of cyberbullying is that teenagers experience headaches, stomach aches, sleep disorders, fatigue, back pain, loss of appetite and digestive problems. Psychologically and emotionally, teenagers feel fear, feelings of terror, anxiety, suffering, sadness, stress and symptoms of depression. School is related to teenagers being less motivated to go to school and a decrease in concentration levels or academic grades. Psychosocially, adolescents have feelings of isolation and loneliness, exclusion and even social rejection. That a personality who is dominant and enjoys violence tends to be temperamental, impulsive, and easily frustrated and often behaves aggressively in adults. Personality characteristics have a fairly high role in a person's tendency to become a perpetrator of cyberbullying. A person with high self-esteem will show himself to have power over others. This is what makes cyberbullying perpetrators show that they are someone who is powerful by bullying weak people.

Abstract:Increasing public awareness of cyberbullying, coupled with several highly publicized youth suicides linked to electronic bullying, have led lawmakers and politicians to consider new criminal legislation specifically related to cyberbullying. However, little is known about how the police currently respond to cyberbullying, and it is not clear whether new laws are necessary. In this article, the authors draw upon in-depth interviews with Canadian street patrol officers and school resource officers to explore police perspectives on policing cyberbullying. In contrast to the reactive hard-line approach proposed in much legislation and public discussion, police officers prefer to take a preventative approach by educating youth and raising awareness about the dangers of digital communications. Although there are instances when criminal charges must be laid, these incidents transcend “bullying,” a term that has little legal meaning for police officers.

Abstract:The documented effects of cyberbullying take a burden on all those involved, but also impact the wider social environment as well. Victims experience difficult emotions: feelings of humiliation and worthlessness, shame, fear, despair, and sadness. In the long run, they may suffer reduced self-esteem and interpersonal problems: difficulties in establishing contacts and a tendency to withdrawal and isolation. The consequences for perpetrators include the consolidation of aggressive patterns of behavior, the lowering of the sense of responsibility for their own actions, the tendency to antisocial behavior, and the easy slide into conflicts with the law. Witnesses of violence, who are not able to effectively oppose it, or who do not try, often keep their feelings of guilt, dissatisfaction, and self-recrimination for years. For some, it will internalize patterns of passivity, helplessness, and unresponsiveness in difficult situations. This being the case, deepening our knowledge about all of the participants involved in cyberbullying and their mutual relations is of crucial importance.

Abstract:Background: Cyberbullying is well-recognized as a severe public health issue which affects both adolescents and children. Most extant studies have focused on national and regional effects of cyberbullying, with few examining the global perspective of cyberbullying. This systematic review comprehensively examines the global situation, risk factors, and preventive measures taken worldwide to fight cyberbullying among adolescents and children. Methods: A systematic review of available literature was completed following PRISMA guidelines using the search themes “cyberbullying” and “adolescent or children”; the time frame was from January 1st, 2015 to December 31st, 2019. Eight academic databases pertaining to public health, and communication and psychology were consulted, namely: Web of Science, Science Direct, PubMed, Google Scholar, ProQuest, Communication & Mass Media Complete, CINAHL, and PsycArticles. Additional records identified through other sources included the references of reviews and two websites, Cyberbullying Research Center and United Nations Children's Fund. A total of 63 studies out of 2070 were included in our final review focusing on cyberbullying prevalence and risk factors. Results: The prevalence rates of cyberbullying preparation ranged from 6.0 to 46.3%, while the rates of cyberbullying victimization ranged from 13.99 to 57.5%, based on 63 references. Verbal violence was the most common type of cyberbullying. Fourteen risk factors and three protective factors were revealed in this study. At the personal level, variables associated with cyberbullying including age, gender, online behavior, race, health condition, past experience of victimization, and impulsiveness were reviewed as risk factors. Likewise, at the situational level, parent-child relationship, interpersonal relationships, and geographical location were also reviewed in relation to cyberbullying. As for protective factors, empathy and emotional intelligence, parent-child relationship, and school climate were frequently mentioned. Conclusion: The prevalence rate of cyberbullying has increased significantly in the observed 5-year period, and it is imperative that researchers from low and middle income countries focus sufficient attention on cyberbullying of children and adolescents. Despite a lack of scientific intervention research on cyberbullying, the review also identified several promising strategies for its prevention from the perspectives of youths, parents and schools. More research on cyberbullying is needed, especially on the issue of cross-national cyberbullying. International cooperation, multi-pronged and systematic approaches are highly encouraged to deal with cyberbullying.

Abstract:Now Cyberbullying is not a recent phenomenon. In the age of cyberspace, it becomes a major felony. It is becoming worse every day in the globe as technology advances. It violates a number of human rights. There is a connection between online harassment and human rights. It is connected to one another. When cyberbullying is practiced, there are times when some human rights are infringed. One of these is the right to life. Teenagers now experience the most cyberbullying. They are constantly plugged into technology. They become targets of cyberbullying as a result. There are certain communication applications that teenagers use most often. Social media applications on the internet include WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, the browser, and more. Teenagers can shoot pictures anywhere with ease. The internet and certain social media sites broadcast offensive images, videos, and statements, which have a negative impact on teenage psychology. Cyberbullying is solely done to make kids feel inferior in society. Teenagers are unable to take this kind of cyberbullying and end up taking their own lives. The offender influences the victim towards taking their own life. They do not intend to kill themselves. Evidently, the act in question may be classified as a homicide rather than self-inflicted death. In this context, cyberbullying encroaches upon the basic human right to life for adolescents.
Defining cyberbullying: a qualitative research into the perceptions of youngsters

Abstract:Data from 53 focus groups, which involved students from 10 to 18 years old, show that youngsters often interpret "cyberbullying" as "Internet bullying" and associate the phenomenon with a wide range of practices. In order to be considered "true" cyberbullying, these practices must meet several criteria. They should be intended to hurt (by the perpetrator) and perceived as hurtful (by the victim); be part of a repetitive pattern of negative offline or online actions; and be performed in a relationship characterized by a power imbalance (based on "real-life" power criteria, such as physical strength or age, and/or on ICT-related criteria such as technological know-how and anonymity).

Abstract:The Kid's Online Safety Act was recently introduced as a bipartisan proposal to decrease the potential of harm to children while online. This act places the responsibility on tech companies to implement controls on the content that is available to children aged 16 and under. Specific targets of the legislation are content that promotes harmful behaviors such as restricted eating, substance use, or promotion of self‐harm; any sharing of a minor's personal information; marketing that targets a minor's information; and algorithms that promote specific content for children. Further, it would limit a company's ability to extend rewards for increased use of a platform or time spent online. It would also allow creation of a program that would give researchers access to data from companies, enabling additional research on children's technology use and effects on well‐being. And lastly, companies would be required to conduct yearly audits on the risk of their platforms to minors (Washington Post, tech policy, 2022). In short, the legislature mandates a “duty to care” ( Npr.org , 2022)
Cyberbullying: Another main type of bullying?

Abstract:Cyberbullying has recently emerged as a new form of bullying and harassment. 360 adolescents (12-20 years), were surveyed to examine the nature and extent of cyberbullying in Swedish schools. Four categories of cyberbullying (by text message, email, phone call and picture/video clip) were examined in relation to age and gender, perceived impact, telling others, and perception of adults becoming aware of such bullying. There was a significant incidence of cyberbullying in lower secondary schools, less in sixth-form colleges. Gender differences were few. The impact of cyberbullying was perceived as highly negative for picture/video clip bullying. Cybervictims most often chose to either tell their friends or no one at all about the cyberbullying, so adults may not be aware of cyberbullying, and (apart from picture/video clip bullying) this is how it was perceived by pupils. Findings are discussed in relation to similarities and differences between cyberbullying and the more traditional forms of bullying.

Abstract:The paper discusses cybersecurity for children (particularly teenagers) and focuses on Social Media's impact using a theoretical approach. Many social media users are unaware of their Cybersecurity in Social Media and all-round digital privacy and do not understand the importance of developing privacythrough taking both digital and physical measures. We identify seven categories of hacking motivations through multimedia platforms: Emotions, Financial gains, Entertainment, Proficiency for jobs, Hacktivism, Espionage, and Cyber-warfare, particularly for children. As vulnerable people, they can be the principal victims. We explore various methods used for hacking, such as Sexting, Facebook depression, and Influence on buying advertisements. In our findings, we demonstrate that the most critical protection method is to fully understand the digital footprint left behind and its possible consequences. The users should know this as a self-protection mechanism to mitigate security issues before problems occur. It means adopting the same mindset and attitude of protecting oneself in the online world as in the real world.
