Abstract:A series of model catalysts were prepared by using monodisperse iron oxide nanoparticles as the metal precursor and pyrolytic graphene oxides as catalyst support. The catalysts have been employed in the Fischer Tropsch Synthesis (FTS) to study the carbon support effect on the iron active phase. Remarkable catalytic discrepancies in FTS activity and product selectivity were observed, with the pyrolytic treatments of the carbon support at 873K significantly improved the catalytic performance, particularly for the C5+ hydrocarbon yields. X-ray adsorption spectroscopy, XPS, Raman and TEM characterization techniques were used to reveal the interaction of carbon support with the active Fe species. It was found that catalytic behavior is closely associated with the evolution of surface oxygen-containing groups on the carbon supports. The carbon supports might affect the iron based FTS catalyst through a poisoning-like route of binding parts of the active sites by surface oxygen.

Abstract:Fischer-Tropsch synthesis is an important way to replace crude oil resources to sustainable energy in the future, and an important process for catalytic conversion of syngas into clean fuel and high value-added chemicals. Iron-based catalysts have been widely used in industrial production due to their advantages of low cost, flexible operation and water-gas conversion activity. However, the phase change of iron-based catalysts during the reaction process is very complex. As many as seven iron species including elemental iron and different types of iron oxide iron carbide are considered to have Fischer-Tropsch synthesis activity. It is very important to understand the evolution of iron species and their roles in the reaction for clarifying the structure-activity relationship of catalysts and designing efficient industrial catalysts. Hematite Fe 3 O 4 is often used as the precursor oxide of iron based catalyst, which is converted into iron carbide during the reaction process. It is often considered as an inactivated phase and has high water-gas conversion activity, leading to high CO 2 selectivity. Wang et al prepared Fe 3 O 4 catalyst by using metal organic framework（MOF） as precursor, which would be converted into Fe 3 O 4 @Fe 5 C 2 during the reaction process. Therefore, the author believed that Fe 5 C 2 phase was the key to the catalyst activity. Herein, We used graphene as the support and used the classic preparation method of supported catalyst-impregnation method to prepare iron-based catalyst with different loading capacity. The Fe 3 O 4 particles were grown by calcinating at high temperature to prevent excessive carbonization in the reaction process, and the properties of Fe 3 O 4 phase were investigated. The results of reaction performance test show that Fe 3 O 4 species itself has a certain activity of CO hydrogenation, and the carbonization process of large Fe 3 O 4 particles（＞200 nm） in the reaction process will be inhibited to a certain extent. With the increase of reaction time, part of Fe 3 O 4 is carbonized into iron carbide, and the catalyst activity increases, indicating that the activity of iron carbide species is higher than that of Fe 3 O 4 .

Abstract:Hierarchically mesoporous iron oxide/graphene oxide (GO) composites have been synthesized by a facile, one-step hydrothermal method and utilized as Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS) catalysts. The catalysts show intriguing hierarchical pore structure with a large surface area, a high porosity, weaker Fe–GO interaction, easier reduction, and carburization behaviors. The presence of hierarchical pore structure increases the number of catalytic active sites and promotes the mass transfer of reactants and products. Consequently, a high CO conversion (83–90%), a high C5+ selectivity (67–71%), and a high olefin:paraffin ratio (4.9–5.5) of the catalysts are achieved. Graphene-Supported Iron Phosphide Nanoparticles for Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis

Abstract:Graphene (G) is a huge open it-electron system with a unique electronic structure, which ignites diverse applications such as electronics, photovoltaics, batteries, supercapacitors and so on. Because of the larger surface area, G can be used as the catalyst or the advantageous carrier for the catalytic active components for hydrogenation, oxidation and carbon-carbon coupling reactions. In the present study, we exploited G as a support for iron phosphide nanoparticles (FeP/G) by calcination the precursor iron phosphate-graphene oxide nanocomposite (FePO/GO) under hydrogen atmosphere. In the same method, we also prepared the control pure iron phosphide (FeP) by H-2 calcination the precursor iron phosphate (FePO). The FePO of FePO/GO existed in the form of porous spherical and the particle size ranges from 100 nm to 300 nm. After transforming into FeP, the average particle size of FeP is about 10 mu while the particles were uniformly dispersed on the G and no obvious aggregation was observed. While, not only the pure FePO but also the pure FeP was powerful aggregation. That meant GO and G could regulate the microstructure and morphology of FePO and FeP, respectively. The as-prepared products were investigated by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, field emission environment scanning electron microscopy and XPS spectroscopy. XPS spectra showed that the electron binding energy of Fe in FeP/G increased slightly. The Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis (FTS) reaction has been selected as model reaction for evaluating FeP/G. When the reaction conditions were 15 mg catalyst (reduced in H2 at 623 K for 2 h prior to FTS reaction), 2 MPa syngas (CO : H-2 : Ar=32 : 63 : 5), 5 mL.min(-1), 593 K, the remarkable catalytic discrepancies in FTS activity and product selectivity were observed. The activity toward the conversion of CO on FeP/G was about 70 times that of FeP. The result show that FeP/G catalysts are potential good catalysts for FTS.

Abstract:Facile preparation of highly efficient iron-based catalysts is vital to improve the performance of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS), a sustainable process for converting non-petroleum carbon resources to valuable hydrocarbons. In this work, a convenient preparation for nitrogen-regulated graphene supported iron nanoparticles, with the assistant of microwave treatment, was developed. Thereinto, the nitrogen-containing groups in graphene support were introduced by NH3·H2O treatment. By comparison with ordinary calcination, microwave treatment could significantly shorten the heating time to few seconds, and promote the reduction of iron species. The existence of a small number of nitrogen-containing groups could effectively anchor iron species, and improve the dispersion of iron species. Meanwhile, the duration length of NH3·H2O treatment time could regulate the content of N configuration (pyridinic-N and pyrrolic-N). The size of supported iron species from 120 nm to 10 nm could be well controlled via increasing microwave time from 0 to 14 s. For N-regulated graphene supported iron catalysts, evenly dispersed small particles of iron species, improved surface reduction behavior and reasonable N configuration all promoted FTS. Under relevant industrial conditions (320 °C, 2.0 MPa, 5 g h mol−1), the optimized 15%Fe/AG(12 h)-W(10) catalyst achieved CO conversion as high as 97.2% and C5+ selectivity of 40.0% while maintaining a mild CO2 selectivity (28.2%). The superior preparation and catalytic performance disclosed that the catalyst could be one of ideal candidates for industrial iron-based FTS catalysts in future.

Abstract:Despite the extensive study of the Fe-based Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS) over the past 90 years, its active phases and reaction mechanisms are still unclear due to the coexistence of metals, oxides, and carbide phases presented under realistic FTS reaction conditions and the complex reaction network involving CO activation, C–C coupling, and methane formation. To address these issues, we successfully synthesized a range of pure-phase iron and iron-carbide nanoparticles (Fe, Fe5C2, Fe3C, and Fe7C3) for the first time. By using them as the ideal model catalysts on high-pressure transient experiments, we identified unambiguously that all the iron carbides are catalytically active in the FTS reaction while Fe5C2 is the most active yet stable carbide phase, consistent with density functional theory (DFT) calculation results. The reaction mechanism and kinetics of Fe-based FTS were further explored on the basis of those model catalysts by means of transient high-pressure stepwise temperature-programmed surface reaction (STPSR) experiments and DFT calculations. Our work provides new insights into the active phase of iron carbides and corresponding FTS reaction mechanism, which is essential for better iron-based catalyst design for FTS reactions.

Abstract:Expanded graphite as a type of hydrophobic functional carbon material was innovatively selected as support for Fe-based Fischer-Tropsch catalysts. Through catalytic activity evaluation, ferric ammonium citrate was selected as the most suitable iron precursor for expanded graphite among ferric nitrate, ferric ammonium oxalate, ferric citrate, and ferric ammonium citrate. The catalyst with ferric ammonium citrate as the precursor and expanded graphite as support achieved the best CO2 hydrogenation performance with a CO2 conversion rate of 42.4%, a C-2(=)-C-4(=) yield of 14.8%, and a CO selectivity of 8.3%. Furthermore, it was observed that the precursor that had better wettability and formed hydrogen bonds with support tended to generate smaller iron nanoparticles. In addition, nitrogen doping during catalyst calcination would cause differences in electronic properties and then influence the reducibility and carbonization of iron species.

Abstract:In this study, we synthesized three precipitated iron catalysts using continuous co-precipitation method with three different iron precursors: ferric nitrate Fe(NO3)3, ferrous sulfate FeSO4, ferrous oxalate FeC2O4. The catalysts were characterized with XRD, SEM, XPS, N2 sorption and H2-TPR, respectively. The results indicated that the phases of catalysts using ferrous salts as iron precursor were composed of Fe2O3 and Fe3O4. Especially, the catalyst sample prepared by ferrous oxalate (Fe–C) exhibited the largest crystallite size, the highest crystallinity (99.78%), and the easiest reducibility. Fischer–Tropsch synthesis reaction was carried out to study the catalytic performance of three precipitated iron catalysts. In comparison with the other two catalysts, Fe–C has showed ability of the highest catalytic activity, the best stability and the highest selectivity of C5+ hydrocarbons. All the results lead us to draw a conclusion that the properties of iron precursors can notably affect morphology, phase structure, reduction behaviors and catalytic performances of the catalyst.

Abstract:Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS) is essential for the transformation of natural gas, coal, and biomass to clean transportation fuels and value‐added chemicals. Traditionally, iron catalysts for FTS are predominantly fused iron catalysts and precipitated iron catalysts using silica as the support. Owing to an intense surge in interest in carbon materials during recent years, along with the unique properties of these materials, such as high surface area, high porosity, and ample structures, carbon‐supported iron‐based FTS catalysts have attracted increasing attention. In this detailed review of the progress of the Fe/C catalysts for FTS in the last three decades, particular emphasis is put on their preparation, characterization, and catalytic performance relevant to the characteristics of carbon materials. This review is intended to be a valuable resource to researchers interested in this exciting field of catalysis, as well as the foundation for those investigating applications of novel carbon materials. A brief discussion is also devoted to the challenges and opportunities regarding the future development of Fe/C FTS catalysts.
Stabilizing the Active Phase of Iron-Based Fischer–Tropsch Catalysts for Lower Olefins: Mechanism and Strategy

Abstract:Fischer-Tropsch synthesis of lower olefins (FTO) is a classical yet modern topic of great significance in which the supported Fe-based nanoparticles are the most promising catalysts. The performance deterioration of catalysts is a big challenge due to the instability of the nanosized active phase of iron carbides. Herein, by in situ mass spectrometry, theoretical analysis, and atmospheric- and high-pressure experimental examinations, we revealed the Ostwald-ripening-like growth mechanism of the active phase of iron carbides in FTO, which involves the cyclic formation-decomposition of iron carbonyl intermediates to transport iron species from small particles to large ones. Accordingly, by suppressing the formation of iron carbonyl species with a high-N-content carbon support, the size and structure of the active phase were regulated and stabilized, and durable iron-based catalysts were conveniently obtained with the highest selectivity for lower olefins up to 54.1%. This study provides a practical strategy for exploring advanced FTO catalysts.
Glucose-Induced Monodisperse Iron Oxide/Graphene Oxide Catalysts for Efficient Fischer–Tropsch Synthesis

Abstract:A facile green approach to efficiently tune the particle size and dispersion of graphene oxide-supported iron oxide catalysts (Fe/G) through the controlled hydrothermal treatment with the addition of glucose was presented. Various characterization techniques were employed to study the effect of glucose content on the structure and property of Fe/G catalysts. It is found that the addition of glucose can generate spatial confinement between graphene oxide sheets, which can restrain the growth of iron oxide nanoparticles and finally tune the particle size and dispersion, as confirmed by the experimental and theoretical calculation results. The glucose-induced carbon-rich atmosphere also benefits the reduction and carburization behaviors of Fe/G catalysts. Abstract:As a sustainable and short-flow process, iron-catalyzed direct conversion of CO-rich syngas to lower olefins without intermediate steps, i.e., Fischer–Tropsch-to-Olefins (FTO), has received increasing attention. However, its fundamental understanding is usually limited by the complex crystal phase composition in addition to the interferences of the promoter effects and inevitable catalyst deactivation. Until recently, the combination of multiple in-situ/ex-situ characterizations and theoretical studies has evidenced Hägg iron carbide (χ-Fe5C2) as the dominant active phase of iron-based Fischer–Tropsch catalysts. This perspective attempts to review and discuss some recent progresses on the nature of χ-Fe5C2 catalyst and the crucial effects of promoters on the FTO performance from theoretical and experimental viewpoints, aiming to provide new insights into the rational design of iron-based FTO catalysts.
Comparison of Preparation Methods of Iron-Based Catalysts for Enhancing Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis Performance

Abstract:Carbon supported iron catalysts for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, with the same iron loading of ca. 35 wt.%, were prepared by pyrolysis process and incipient wetness impregnation methods. The effect of the preparation methods on the catalyst structure, catalytic properties, and the direct conversion of syngas via Fischer-Tropsch synthesis was investigated. The iron species, iron particle size and iron reducibility depended on the preparation method. The pyrolysis of homogeneous fusion yielded a unique core-shell structure with dispersed iron species embedded in a matrix of porous carbon. The FeOx/AC catalyst obtained by incipient wetness impregnation contained Fe2O3 species after calcination, while the core-shell structured catalyst obtained by pyrolysis process contained Fe3C species after calcination. The results show that the core-shell structure iron-based catalyst had higher extent of carburization and dispersion, which led to higher activity for Fischer-Tropsch reaction than that of other two catalysts obtained by different synthesis methods. Furthermore, the Fe3C@C catalyst promoted by alkali metals (Na, Mg, K, Ca) resulted in the increase of O/P ratio and low carbon olefin selectivity, and the decrease of methane selectivity.
Γ-Fe2o3 As the Precursor of Iron Based Catalyst Prepared by Solid-State Reaction at Room Temperature for Fischer-Tropsch to Olefins

Abstract:Iron catalyst was fabricated via simple solid-state reaction of metal nitrates mixture (Fe, K, Al, Ca, Mg, Sm) with oxalic acid dihydrate at room temperature. Iron catalysts prepared by conventional methods, such as co-precipitation and fusing, are also included as comparison. The performances of catalysts were evaluated by the Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis (FTS) in a fixed bed reactor. The results indicate that uniform nanoparticles were obtained with surface area as high as 38.7 m(2)/g prepared by solid-state reaction. Following calcination at 500 degrees C, gamma-Fe2O3 were obtained as the catalyst precursor. By contrast, alpha-Fe2O3 was the main precursor derived from co-precipitation. In addition, gamma-Fe2O3 prepared by solid-state reaction facilitates the formation of active phase, Fe5C2 with the exposure of (021) facet. High Miller index surface (021) facilitates the adsorption and the dissociation of CO, which contributes the high activity and high selectivity to light olefins. Consequently, compared with conventional catalysts, solid-state reaction derived catalysts exhibit much higher FTO reaction activity and selectivity to lower olefins. The FTY value of 5.62 x 10(-3) mol(CO) g(Fe)(-1) s(-1) was obtained which is almost two times higher than that of catalyst prepared by co-precipitation (3.19 x 10(-3) mol(CO) g(Fe)(-1) s(-1)) or 3 times higher than that of catalyst prepared by fusing method (1.98 x 10(-3) mol(CO) g(Fe)(-1) s(-1)). The selectivity to light olefins of around 40% is obtained which is significantly higher than that of the reference catalysts (25% and 33% respectively). The present study provides a promising pathway to prepare iron based catalysts at room temperature.

Abstract:Fischer–Tropsch to olefins (FTO) reaction is an important non-petrochemical route to produce light olefins. Iron is the most widely used and easily obtainable metal catalyst with great potential in FTO. Combine micro and relatively macro perspectives, this review briefly summarizes the recent research progress related to the synthesis of light olefins via Fe-based FTO catalysts by focusing on the addition of various supports and promoters, while elucidating the effects of novel catalyst configurations and preparation methods on catalytic performance. Finally, the future application and research of Fe-based catalysts applied in FTO are discussed.

Abstract:Two kinds of novel iron-based composite catalysts were prepared by redox reaction between carbon nanotubes and strong oxidants (e.g., KMnO4 and K2FeO4) followed by thermal treatments. Compared to traditional catalysts prepared by impregnation method, these novel catalysts show higher activity, selectivity and stability for direct conversion of syngas to lower olefins, which could be consequences of the highly dispersed iron nanoparticles, well-distributed promoters, weak metal-support interaction and high amount of defects on support. The catalyst structure-performance relationship was studied by multitechniques, such as TEM, elemental mapping, H2-TPR, Raman. Furthermore, catalyst microstructures, such as particle size, loading and distribution, were easily adjusted by changing the preparation and thermal treatment conditions.
Study of the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis on nano-precipitated iron-based catalysts with different particle sizes

Abstract:Nano iron-based catalysts with different particle sizes were prepared by a co-precipitated method and characterized by XRD, N-2 adsorption, SEM, Mossbauer spectroscopy, XPS, H-2-TPR, CO-TPD, H-2-TPD and TGA. The CO-TPD results revealed that large particle sizes of catalysts were not conducive to the adsorption of CO, and exhibited low activity of FTS. The decrease of catalyst particle size enhanced the interaction between Fe and Mn, and promoted the CO chemical adsorption and the formation of Fe5C2, but the hydrogenation reaction was inhibited as confirmed by H-2-TPD. When the particle size continued to decrease, Mossbauer spectroscopy showed that MnFe2O4 appeared in the catalyst phase, which hindered the reduction of catalysts and the adsorption of feed gas. Overall, the sample FeMnSm-600 showed the highest C = 2-4 selectivity of 33% at the highest CO conversion of 79% during the reaction conditions of 300 degrees C, 1.0 MPa, 12 000 mL (g h)(-1), and H-2/CO = 2.

Abstract:N-doped carbon materials as catalyst supports have shown great superiority because of rich porosity, tunable metal-support interaction and electronic promotion effect. Controllable fabrication of carbon materials with specific morphology and different configurations provides wider possibilities for applications in catalysis. Herein, N-doped carbon nanosheets (CNS) were successfully synthesized by using monoclinic ZIF-8 nanosheets as templates. Compared with commercial active carbon and cubic ZIF-8 particles-derived carbon particles, the derived CNS exhibit superior graphitization degree and electronic effect. Consequently, the promoted Fe carburization improved the intrinsic activity for Fe/CNS catalysts in FTS. Further investigation on pyrolysis temperature achieved tunable configuration and content of N dopant. XPS, Raman, Mössbauer spectroscopy, TEM, H2-TPR etc. were combined to elucidate the promotion effect of CNS on dispersion, electronic properties and formation of Fe carbides. By correlating the composition and structure to catalytic performance in FTS, we illustrated the significance of carbon materials in Fe supported catalysts.

Abstract:Iron carbides are unmistakably associated with the active phase for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS). The formation of these carbides is highly dependent on the catalyst formulation, the activation method and the operational conditions. Because of this highly dynamic behavior, studies on active phase performance often lack the direct correlation between catalyst performance and iron carbide phase. For the above reasons, an extensive in situ Mossbauer spectroscopy study on highly dispersed Fe on carbon catalysts (Fe@C) produced through pyrolysis of a Metal Organic Framework was coupled to their FTS performance testing. The preparation of Fe@C catalysts via this MOF mediated synthesis allows control over the active phase formation and therefore provides an ideal model system to study the performance of different iron carbides. Reduction of fresh Fe@C followed by low-temperature Fischer-Tropsch (LTFT) conditions resulted in the formation of the epsilon'-Fe2.2C, whereas carburization of the fresh catalysts under high temperature Fischer-Tropsch (HTFT) resulted in the formation of chi-Fe5C2. Furthermore, the different activation methods did not alter other important catalyst properties, as pre- and post-reaction transmission electron microscopy (TEM) characterization confirmed that the iron nanoparticle dispersion was preserved. The weight normalized activities (FTY) of chi-Fe5C2 and epsilon'-Fe2.2C are virtually identical, whilst it is found that epsilon'-Fe2.2C is a better hydrogenation catalyst than chi-Fe5C2. The absence of differences under subsequent HTFT experiments, where chi-Fe5C2 is the dominating phase, is a strong indication that the iron carbide phase is responsible for the differences in selectivity. Insights into the influence of support and potassium or sulfur promoter on iron-based Fischer–Tropsch synthesis: understanding the control of catalytic activity, selectivity to lower olefins, and catalyst deactivation

Abstract:The fundamental understanding of the control of catalytic activity, selectivity and deactivation in iron-based FTS is of prime scientific and industrial importance. In this work, the inter-effects of various supports and promoters (K, Na and S) in FTS have been studied intensively to elucidate and draw the key points of a better reaction performance. Logical results from abundant experimental work indicate that the catalytic activity is mainly affected by the reducibility of iron oxides which is related to the particle size, interaction with the support, and promoter characteristics, and by the particle size-dependent carburization. In order to reach a desired selectivity to lower olefins (C2=–C4=) beyond the limitation of the Schulz–Flory distribution, the use of K or Na alone is insufficient due to its favorable chain growth to form higher hydrocarbons. It is well confirmed that S can shift the selectivity toward short-chain C2–C4 hydrocarbons without an increased selectivity to methane. Combining this distinctive function of S with the favoring of β-hydride abstraction termination of K and a suitable support to have a weak interaction with iron particles, a substantially higher selectivity to lower olefins at about 45–55% with 10–15% methane and ∼6% C2–C4 paraffins could be obtained at a milder reaction temperature and elevated reaction pressure (300 °C, 1.0 MPa). In this study, the catalyst deactivation is mainly ascribed to K-induced carbon deposition while the reversible transformation of χ-Fe5C2 into Fe3O4 is another reason to some extent.
