Abstract:4D printing has attracted great interest since the concept was introduced in 2012. The past 5 years have witnessed rapid advances in both 4D printing processes and materials. Unlike 3D printing, 4D printing allows the printed part to change its shape and function with time in response to change in external conditions such as temperature, light, electricity, and water. In this review, we first overview the history of 4D printing and discuss its definition. We then summarize recent technological advances in 4D printing with focuses on methods, materials, and their intrinsic links. Finally, we discuss potential applications and offer perspectives for this exciting new field.

Abstract:Shape memory polymers (SMP) with 3D geometries and tunable shape-shifting behavior can open up new opportunities in intelligent devices. Achieving both simultaneously is difficult for conventional approaches. 4D printing allows fabrication of complex 3D SMP geometries that can change shapes (i.e., the fourth dimension is time), but tuning the shape memory response is challenging because of the printing constraints. Here, we report a material and process concept that allows digital light fabrication of SMP with fine control of not only the geometries but also the shape memory characteristics, within a printing time of 30 s. Digital light modulation allows spatio-temporal tuning of the material properties including shape memory transition temperature, rubbery modulus, and maximum elongation (up to 250%). Consequently, the process allows producing multiple-SMP within a single material construct using the same printing precursor. We demonstrate that this unique attribute is beneficial in constructing unusual shape-shifting 3D nano-photonic and electronic devices. The simplicity and versatility of our approach facilitates its future expansion into a wide range of geometrically complex devices with advanced functions.

Abstract:Advanced multifunctional devices increasingly rely on challenging complex shapes for their functions. 3D printing offers a solution but is often limited by the fabrication speed and/or material diversity. 4D printing based on digitally controlled 2D-to-3D transformation is advantageous in speed, but the accessible shapes are limited and integration of multiple materials is difficult. We report herein a concept that significantly extends the technological scope by combining 4D printing with modular assembly. Specifically, 4D photo-printed structures based on dynamically crosslinked polymers can be assembled in a modular fashion by interfacial bond exchange. Complex 3D objects with tailorable multiple materials can consequently be produced. This allows the fabrication of sophisticated shape-memory devices including a 3D Miura-patterned structure with zero Poisson's ratio and a Kresling-patterned cylindrical structure with superior mechanical stability. Our approach extends the possibilities for the future development of multifunctional devices with seamless integration of material, structure, and function.
Shape-Changing Design Strategy Based on 4D Printing

Abstract:With the emergence of digital fabrication technologies and programmable materials, four-dimensional printing（4D printing）provides a novel method to create products and interfaces with shape-changing properties. It enhancies user experience with richer material properties, higher performances in exchanging information, and better accessibility to improve design inclusiveness. In this paper, we start by investigating the advancement in the current studies and the challenges they have encountered in digital fabrication and programmable material design. Then we propose a design strategy including material composition, structure design, triggering method, and shape-changing design. Lastly, we provide references and suggestions for future design opportunities within 4D printing.

Abstract:Four-dimensional (4D) printing relies on multimaterial printing, reinforcement patterns, or micro/nanofibrous additives as programmable tools to achieve desired shape reconfigurations. However, existing programming approaches still follow the so-called origami design principle to generate reconfigurable structures by self-folding stacked 2D materials, particularly at small scales. Here, we propose a programmable modular design that directly constructs 3D reconfigurable microstructures capable of sophisticated 3D-to-3D shape transformations by assembling 4D micro-building blocks. 4D direct laser writing is used to print two-photon polymerizable, stimuli-responsive hydrogels to construct building blocks at micrometer scales. Denavit-Hartenberg (DH) parameters, used to define robotic arm kinematics, are introduced as guidelines for how to assemble the micro-building blocks and plan the 3D motion of assembled chain blocks. Last, a 3D-printed microscaled transformer capable of changing its shape from a race car to a humanoid robot is devised and fabricated using the DH parameters to guide the motion of various assembled compartments.

Abstract:With the additional dimension, 4D printing is emerging as a novel technique to enable configuration switching in 3D printed items. In this paper, four major approaches, namely self-assembly of elements, deformation mismatch, bi-stability, and the Shape memory effect (SME), are identified as the generic approaches to achieve 4D printing. The main features of these approaches are briefly discussed. Utilizing these approaches either individually or in a combined manner, the potential of 4D printing to reshape product design is demonstrated by a few example applications.

Abstract:Abstract Recent developments in (AM) additive developed normally Three-dimensional (3D) printing is a term used to describe printing that is three-dimensional in nature, have enabled researchers to use traditional production methods to create previously unthinkable, complex shapes. Usage of smart materials by the way of adopting the external stimuli in printing is part of a 3D-printing research division called 4D-printing.4D-printing allows for the development of dynamically controllable shapes on-demand by the addition of sometime as another dimension. The potential of 4D-printing has been significantly expanded by recent advances intelligent synthetic materials, new printers, processes of deformation and mathematical modelling. This paper deals with improvement in the area of 4D-printing, with a importance on its practical applications. With explications of their morphing mechanisms, Smart materials are discussed and produced using 4D-printing. Moreover, case study on soft robotics is discussed. We end with 4D Printing problems and future opportunities.

Abstract:4D printing technology is proposed based on 3D printing technology of smart materials and structure.4D printed entities can be changed with the external environment.The method of additive manufacturing and driving effect of materials,such as shape memory alloys,shape memory polymers,piezoelectric materials,electroactive polymers,light driven polymer and water drive structure,are compared and it is concluded that direct writing printing has the characteristics of wide applicability,while driving performance of a single smart material is limited.Multi-material additive manufacturing can combine many kinds of smart materials with many kinds of drive mode and overcome the shortage of single smart material and structure.The literature review shows that 4D printing research is still in the laboratory stage,it is also required to broaden the intelligent materials,develop the printing software,explore the printing process,investigate the methods for soft materials and solve the problems in intelligent material compatibility,in order that 4D printing can be widely used in medicine,military,aerospace and other fields.

Abstract:Four-dimensional (4D) active shape-changing structures based on shape memory polymers (SMPs) and shape memory nanocomposites (SMNCs) are able to be controlled in both space and time and have attracted increasing attention worldwide. However, conventional processing approaches have restricted the design space of such smart structures. Herein, 4D active shape-changing architectures in custom-defined geometries exhibiting thermally and remotely actuated behaviors are achieved by direct-write printing of ultraviolet (UV) cross-linking poly(lactic acid)-based inks. The results reveal that, by the introduction of a UV cross-linking agent, the printed objects present excellent shape memory behavior, which enables three-dimensional (3D)-one-dimensional (1D)-3D, 3D-two-dimensional (2D)-3D, and 3D-3D-3D configuration transformations. More importantly, the addition of iron oxide successfully integrates 4D shape-changing objects with fast remotely actuated and magnetically guidable properties. This research realizes the printing of both SMPs and SMNCs, which present an effective strategy to design 4D active shape-changing architectures with multifunctional properties. This paves the way for the further development of 4D printing, soft robotics, flexible electronics, minimally invasive medicine, etc.

Abstract:Four-dimensional printing (4DP) is an interesting field of study that integrates intelligent materials into three-dimensional printing (3DP). Using this method, objects that can gradually change form in response to environmental stimuli, such as moisture, electric or magnetic fields, UV light, temperature swings, pH variations, or alterations in the composition of ions, can be created. Intelligent materials, such as shape memory polymers, alloys, hydrogels, ceramics, and composites, which can react to external stimuli, are essential for 4DP. Unlike traditional 3D printing, the ability of 4D printed materials to undergo structural and/or property alterations expands their applications across industries such as aerospace, biomedical, soft robotics, engineering, and fashion, potentially revolutionizing manufacturing. This review provides an overview of current advancements in 4D printing and discusses both established and emerging smart materials with shape-changing capabilities and their responses to stimuli. It explores the differences between 4D and 3D printing technologies, traces the origins of 4D printing, and examines the materials involved, with emphasis on shape-memory polymers. This paper also highlights the applications of 4D printing in pharmaceuticals and biomedicine, particularly in dynamic polymers, and in the development of drugs for genetic diseases. In addition, it discusses progress in creating implantable biomedical devices and pharmaceutical medications. Despite being in its early stages, 4D printing technology has immense potential and promising exciting possibilities in the future.

Abstract:4D printing allows for the transformation capabilities of 3D-printed architectures over time, altering their shape, properties, or function when exposed to external stimuli. This interdisciplinary technology endows the 3D architectures with unique functionalities, which has generated excitement in diverse research fields, such as soft robotics, biomimetics, biomedical devices, and sensors. Understanding the selection of the material, architectural designs, and employed stimuli is crucial to unlocking the potential of smart customization with 4D printing. This review summarizes recent significant developments in 4D printing and establishes links between smart materials, 3D printing techniques, programmable structures, diversiform stimulus, and new functionalities for multidisciplinary applications. We start by introducing the advanced features of 4D printing and the key technological roadmap for its implementation. We then place considerable emphasis on printable smart materials and structural designs, as well as general approaches to designing programmable structures. We also review stimulus designs in smart materials and their associated stimulus-responsive mechanisms. Finally, we discuss new functionalities of 4D printing for potential applications and further development directions.

Abstract:In a variety of industries, Additive Manufacturing has revolutionized the whole design–fabrication cycle. Traditional 3D printing is typically employed to produce static components, which are not able to fulfill dynamic structural requirements and are inappropriate for applications such as soft grippers, self-assembly systems, and smart actuators. To address this limitation, an innovative technology has emerged, known as “4D printing”. It processes smart materials by using 3D printing for fabricating smart structures that can be reconfigured by applying different inputs, such as heat, humidity, magnetism, electricity, light, etc. At present, 4D printing is still a growing technology, and it presents numerous challenges regarding materials, design, simulation, fabrication processes, applied strategies, and reversibility. In this work a critical review of 4D printing technologies, materials, and applications is provided.

Abstract:Shape memory polymer composites (SMPCs) are a type of smart material that can change shapes under the stimulation of the external environment, and they have great potential in aerospace, biomedical, robotics, and electronic devices due to their advantages of high strength and toughness, lightweight, impact resistance, corrosion resistance, and aging resistance. 4D printing technology has provided new opportunities for the further development of smart materials. The addition of various fillers enriches the variety of printable materials and provides composites with different properties and functions. The combination of SMPCs and printing technologies realizes the structure-function integration. This paper introduces the emergence and development of 4D printing technologies, the preparation methods and properties of SMPCs for 4D printing; as well as the research progress and potential application of 4D printable SMPCs in recent years in terms of thermal, electrical, magnetic, and optical driving. Finally, the existing problems and future development of 4D printable SMPCs are discussed.

Abstract:Four‐dimensional (4D) printing has attracted tremendous worldwide attention during the past decade. This technology enables the shape, property, or functionality of printed structures to change with time in response to diverse external stimuli, making the original static structures alive. The revolutionary 4D‐printing technology offers remarkable benefits in controlling the geometric and functional reconfiguration, thereby showcasing immense potential across diverse fields, including biomedical engineering, electronics, robotics, and photonics. Here, a comprehensive review of the latest achievements on 4D printing using various types of materials and different additive manufacturing techniques is presented. The state‐of‐the‐art strategies implemented in harnessing various 4D‐printed structures are highlighted, which involve materials design, stimuli, functionalities, and applications. The machine learning approach explored for 4D printing is also discussed. Abstract:4D printing is defined as the additive manufacturing process of smart (stimuli‐responsive) materials. Shape memory materials are sensitive to specific stimuli such as heat, electricity, magnetic fields, etc., which can change their form or properties. This characteristic gives the material a dynamic behavior over time (the fourth dimension). The application of the 4D printing technique is currently being explored in various fields, including soft robotics, electrical devices, deployable structures, medical implants, and medicine delivery systems. This article first examines the fundamentals of 3D printing techniques, their advantages, and limitations. Then, the shape memory materials are categorized and reviewed according to their type (shape memory polymers, shape memory composites, polymer blends, etc.) and stimulus responsiveness. Finally, different properties of shape memory materials like shape memory effect, thermomechanical properties, and their compatibility with different types of additive manufacturing processes are discussed.

Abstract:<p>4D printing has attracted academic interest in the recent years because it endows static printed structures with dynamic properties with the change of time. The shapes, functionalities, or properties of the 4D printed objects could alter under various stimuli such as heat, light, electric, and magnetic field. Briefly, 4D printing is the development of 3D printing with the fourth dimension of time. Among the fabrication techniques that have been employed for 4D printing, the direct ink writing technique shows superiority due to its open source for various types of materials. Herein, the state‐of‐the‐art achievements about the topic of 4D printing through direct ink writing are summarized. The types of materials, printing strategies, actuated methods, and their potential applications are discussed in detail. To date, most efforts have been devoted to shape‐shifting materials, including shape memory polymers, hydrogels, and liquid crystal elastomers, showing great prospects in areas ranging from the biomedical field to robotics. Finally, the current challenges and outlook toward 4D printing based on direct ink writing are also pointed out to leave open a significant space for future innovation.</p>

Abstract:Since the inception of additive manufacturing (AM) which is colloquially known as 3D printing, tremendous technological advancements have been achieved over the years thanks to the unwavering research efforts. Particularly, the progress in the 3D printable materials to include stimuli-responsive materials has been hailed as one of the most significant breakthroughs in AM. The combination of the smart materials and the AMs ability to fabricate intricate geometries has given rise to an emerging fabrication method which has been dubbed 4D printing due to its ability to imbue the printed structure with dynamic capabilities (4th dimension). 4D printing has received unprecedented research interest owing to its potential applications in a myriad of fields including medical, aerospace, soft electronics, morphing structures, and even fashion wear. In the spirit of furthering the concept of 4D printing; this review presents its general background, recent advancements, various methods of 4D printing, applications, current challenges, and future possibilities.
