Abstract:4D printing has attracted great interest since the concept was introduced in 2012. The past 5 years have witnessed rapid advances in both 4D printing processes and materials. Unlike 3D printing, 4D printing allows the printed part to change its shape and function with time in response to change in external conditions such as temperature, light, electricity, and water. In this review, we first overview the history of 4D printing and discuss its definition. We then summarize recent technological advances in 4D printing with focuses on methods, materials, and their intrinsic links. Finally, we discuss potential applications and offer perspectives for this exciting new field.

Abstract:Four‐dimensional (4D) printing has attracted tremendous worldwide attention during the past decade. This technology enables the shape, property, or functionality of printed structures to change with time in response to diverse external stimuli, making the original static structures alive. The revolutionary 4D‐printing technology offers remarkable benefits in controlling the geometric and functional reconfiguration, thereby showcasing immense potential across diverse fields, including biomedical engineering, electronics, robotics, and photonics. Here, a comprehensive review of the latest achievements on 4D printing using various types of materials and different additive manufacturing techniques is presented. The state‐of‐the‐art strategies implemented in harnessing various 4D‐printed structures are highlighted, which involve materials design, stimuli, functionalities, and applications. The machine learning approach explored for 4D printing is also discussed. Abstract:<p>Additive manufacturing, or more commonly known as 3D printing, has been at the forefront of manufacturing research for the past couple decades. Many advances have occurred in the basic printing techniques, materials, and post-processing schemes. In recent years, there have been many critical developments in the field 3D printing, such as the development of volumetric 3D printing to increase the printing speed, composite 3D printing to create piezoelectric devices, and hydrogel structures highly similar to blood vessels. The spectrum of materials that can be printed has also increased, allowing researchers to print a variety of materials including live cells, modulus changing polymers and even spacecraft-grade metals.</p>

Abstract:As computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technologies have matured, three-dimensional (3D) printing materials suitable for dentistry have attracted considerable research interest, owing to their high efficiency and low cost for clinical treatment. Three-dimensional printing technology, also known as additive manufacturing, has developed rapidly over the last forty years, with gradual application in various fields from industry to dental sciences. Four-dimensional (4D) printing, defined as the fabrication of complex spontaneous structures that change over time in response to external stimuli in expected ways, includes the increasingly popular bioprinting. Existing 3D printing materials have varied characteristics and scopes of application; therefore, categorization is required. This review aims to classify, summarize, and discuss dental materials for 3D printing and 4D printing from a clinical perspective. Based on these, this review describes four major materials, i.e., polymers, metals, ceramics, and biomaterials. The manufacturing process of 3D printing and 4D printing materials, their characteristics, applicable printing technologies, and clinical application scope are described in detail. Furthermore, the development of composite materials for 3D printing is the main focus of future research, as combining multiple materials can improve the materials' properties. Updates in material sciences play important roles in dentistry; hence, the emergence of newer materials are expected to promote further innovations in dentistry.

Abstract:The rapid prototyping has dramatically expanded over the last 20yrs, with the three-dimensional (3D) printing to be in the forefront and one of the most promising technologies among others. 3D printing is an additive manufacturing (AM) process based on sequential addition of material layers, offering the opportunity to print either two-dimensional parts (thin or thick films as self-standing films or coatings) or bulk 3D parts and components made of different materials with variable mechanical and physical properties. The global sales in 3D printing (products and services) rose by 21% from 2017, reaching 7B$ in 2018 (https://www.forbes.com). There are various techniques for printing 3D solid materials, including electron-beam freeform fabrication, direct metal laser sintering, and fused deposition modeling (FDM), among others. 3D FDM holds strong potential for the formation of a new class of multifunctional thermoplastic polymer nanocomposites. With the ability to print complex 3D objects layer by layer even by low-cost 3D printers appear to the market nowadays, AM with nanomaterials could be leveraged in new ways toward greater control over material properties across part dimensions. Multifunctionality through embedding of nanomaterials and nanotechnology-enabled final objects can further extend capabilities of nanocomposites to properties such as by-design and patient-specific biomedical equipment, gradients in thermal and electrical conductivity, photonic emissions tunable for wavelength, increased strength, and reduced weight. 3D FDM printing method could allow direct printing of nanomaterial-modified thermoplastic filaments, to bring a new paradigm for nanocomposite functionality in bulk 3D objects.

Abstract:Shape memory polymer composites (SMPCs) are a type of smart material that can change shapes under the stimulation of the external environment, and they have great potential in aerospace, biomedical, robotics, and electronic devices due to their advantages of high strength and toughness, lightweight, impact resistance, corrosion resistance, and aging resistance. 4D printing technology has provided new opportunities for the further development of smart materials. The addition of various fillers enriches the variety of printable materials and provides composites with different properties and functions. The combination of SMPCs and printing technologies realizes the structure-function integration. This paper introduces the emergence and development of 4D printing technologies, the preparation methods and properties of SMPCs for 4D printing; as well as the research progress and potential application of 4D printable SMPCs in recent years in terms of thermal, electrical, magnetic, and optical driving. Finally, the existing problems and future development of 4D printable SMPCs are discussed.

Abstract:4D printing allows for the transformation capabilities of 3D-printed architectures over time, altering their shape, properties, or function when exposed to external stimuli. This interdisciplinary technology endows the 3D architectures with unique functionalities, which has generated excitement in diverse research fields, such as soft robotics, biomimetics, biomedical devices, and sensors. Understanding the selection of the material, architectural designs, and employed stimuli is crucial to unlocking the potential of smart customization with 4D printing. This review summarizes recent significant developments in 4D printing and establishes links between smart materials, 3D printing techniques, programmable structures, diversiform stimulus, and new functionalities for multidisciplinary applications. We start by introducing the advanced features of 4D printing and the key technological roadmap for its implementation. We then place considerable emphasis on printable smart materials and structural designs, as well as general approaches to designing programmable structures. We also review stimulus designs in smart materials and their associated stimulus-responsive mechanisms. Finally, we discuss new functionalities of 4D printing for potential applications and further development directions.

Abstract:Since the inception of additive manufacturing (AM) which is colloquially known as 3D printing, tremendous technological advancements have been achieved over the years thanks to the unwavering research efforts. Particularly, the progress in the 3D printable materials to include stimuli-responsive materials has been hailed as one of the most significant breakthroughs in AM. The combination of the smart materials and the AMs ability to fabricate intricate geometries has given rise to an emerging fabrication method which has been dubbed 4D printing due to its ability to imbue the printed structure with dynamic capabilities (4th dimension). 4D printing has received unprecedented research interest owing to its potential applications in a myriad of fields including medical, aerospace, soft electronics, morphing structures, and even fashion wear. Abstract:4D printing can be defined as the fabrication of structures using smart materials that allow the final object to change its shape, properties, or function in response to an external stimulus such as light, heat, or moisture. The available technologies, materials, and applications have evolved significantly since their first development in 2013, with prospective applications within the aerospace, manufacturing, and soft robotic industries. This review focuses on the printing technologies and smart materials currently available for fabricating these structures. The applications of 4D printing within biomedicine are explored with a focus on tissue engineering, drug delivery, and artificial organs. Finally, some ideas for potential uses are proposed. 4D printing is making its mark with seemingly unlimited potential applications, however, its use in mainstream medical treatments relies on further developments and extensive research investments.

Abstract:The scientific community is and has constantly been working to innovate and improve the available technologies in our use. In that effort, three-dimensional (3D) printing was developed that can construct 3D objects from a digital file. Three-dimensional printing, also known as additive manufacturing (AM), has seen tremendous growth over the last three decades, and in the last five years, its application has widened significantly. Three-dimensional printing technology has the potential to fill the gaps left by the limitations of the current manufacturing technologies, and it has further become exciting with the addition of a time dimension giving rise to the concept of four-dimensional (4D) printing, which essentially means that the structures created by 4D printing undergo a transformation over time under the influence of internal or external stimuli. The created objects are able to adapt to changing environmental variables such as moisture, temperature, light, pH value, etc. Since their introduction, 3D and 4D printing technologies have extensively been used in the healthcare, aerospace, construction, and fashion industries. Although 3D printing has a highly promising future, there are still a number of challenges that must be solved before the technology can advance. In this paper, we reviewed the recent advances in 3D and 4D printing technologies, the available and potential materials for use, and their current and potential future applications. The current and potential role of 3D printing in the imperative fight against COVID-19 is also discussed. Moreover, the major challenges and developments in overcoming those challenges are addressed. This document provides a cutting-edge review of the materials, applications, and challenges in 3D and 4D printing technologies.

Abstract:<p>4D printing has attracted academic interest in the recent years because it endows static printed structures with dynamic properties with the change of time. The shapes, functionalities, or properties of the 4D printed objects could alter under various stimuli such as heat, light, electric, and magnetic field. Briefly, 4D printing is the development of 3D printing with the fourth dimension of time. Among the fabrication techniques that have been employed for 4D printing, the direct ink writing technique shows superiority due to its open source for various types of materials. Herein, the state‐of‐the‐art achievements about the topic of 4D printing through direct ink writing are summarized. The types of materials, printing strategies, actuated methods, and their potential applications are discussed in detail. To date, most efforts have been devoted to shape‐shifting materials, including shape memory polymers, hydrogels, and liquid crystal elastomers, showing great prospects in areas ranging from the biomedical field to robotics. Finally, the current challenges and outlook toward 4D printing based on direct ink writing are also pointed out to leave open a significant space for future innovation.</p>

Abstract:Abstract3D Printing promises to produce complex biomedical devices according to computer design using patient-specific anatomical data. Since its initial use as pre-surgical visualization models and tooling molds, 3D Printing has slowly evolved to create one-of-a-kind devices, implants, scaffolds for tissue engineering, diagnostic platforms, and drug delivery systems. Fueled by the recent explosion in public interest and access to affordable printers, there is renewed interest to combine stem cells with custom 3D scaffolds for personalized regenerative medicine. Before 3D Printing can be used routinely for the regeneration of complex tissues (e.g. bone, cartilage, muscles, vessels, nerves in the craniomaxillofacial complex), and complex organs with intricate 3D microarchitecture (e.g. liver, lymphoid organs), several technological limitations must be addressed. In this review, the major materials and technology advances within the last five years for each of the common 3D Printing technologies (Three Dimensional Printing, Fused Deposition Modeling, Selective Laser Sintering, Stereolithography, and 3D Plotting/Direct-Write/Bioprinting) are described. Examples are highlighted to illustrate progress of each technology in tissue engineering, and key limitations are identified to motivate future research and advance this fascinating field of advanced manufacturing.

Abstract:Development in additive manufacturing is exceptionally rapid than the expected forecast so far and it has traced out new dimensions in engineering applications. 3D printing technology becomes more glamorous when Skylar Tibbits incorporated the concept of “Time” as a fourth dimension by encapsulating smart materials in current additive manufacturing technique. Materials having an explicit response to external stimuli over a certain time span are designated as smart materials and additive manufacturing of such time-dependent, programmable, and intelligent materials is termed as 4D printing. In 4D printing, primary 3D printed configuration switched exclusively into a transformed shape when exposed to an external stimuli, e.g. heat, light, water, chemical, electric current, magnetic field or pH. Perhaps, additive manufacturing technology seems to be superseded exclusively by this modern technology in forthcoming years, and much effort is demanding from every discipline to actualize this technology. A task-oriented entire landscape of 4D printing followed by a comprehensive smart material perspective is presented in this review. Graphical abstract set forth a route to the complete process comprehension. Moreover, other components of 4D technology like customary techniques, computational challenges, reversibility and current stature of 4D printing are probed through recent experimental and theoretical literature. Abstract:Abstract3D printing, or additive manufacturing, is a transformative technology platform impacting various disciplines, including biomaterials and biomedical devices. We present scientists, engineers, and medical professionals' perspectives about 3D printing of biomaterials and biomedical devices in this special issue. This issue is geared towards understanding the structure–process–property relationships involving different materials in vitro, in vivo, and in silico environments. The focus issue covers polymer, ceramic, glass, metallic and composite biomaterials involving various 3D-printing processes such as fused deposition, powder bed fusion, Bioprinting, directed energy deposition, and binder jetting; addressing research topics including tissue engineering, drug delivery, porous metal implants, bioink development, cell–materials interactions, wear degradation, nano-bio materials, and challenges in point-of-care delivery. Such diversity of research topics is an accurate representation of what is happening in this field globally. Abstract:The development of smart materials has provided a new technology in the field of 3D printing which is termed as 4D printing technology. Such development has allowed the researchers to design a material and component which can respond to external stimuli. The present review focuses on an overview of the advancement in 3D printing technology and 4D printing technology and possibilities for further development. Apart from 3 dimensions of 3D printing, 4D printing uses time as fourth dimension to create or modify shape when exposed to stimuli. The parameters which change with time include temperature, water, light, humidity, pH etc. The invention of smart materials, development in fabrication process and deformation model, advancement in printing methods have led to development of 4D printing technology. The ability of smart material to change the shape and design according to their environment and as per the application have enhanced degree of freedom of parts during application. The effect of major components including smart materials, printing methods and stimuli on 4D printing technology have been reviewed. Some recent discoveries have shown promising results but still need to overcome certain impediments.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) printing, also known as additive manufacturing (AM), has revolutionized various fields by offering improved accuracy and precision in manufacturing processes. This technology is particularly impactful in the medical field, as it provides customizable, better-fitting, and natural-looking prostheses tailored to individual patient needs. In dentistry, 3D printing enhances diagnostic accuracy and facilitates treatment planning. Its layer-by-layer printing has resulted in the fabrication of tooth models with features that mimic real teeth, fabrication of nonsurgical and surgical guides to minimize chair time, and reduction of postoperative complications. Additionally, 3D printed tooth prosthesis such as inlay, onlay, veneers, and others are gaining prominence. Recently, 3D bioprinting, which allows the fabrication of scaffolds with cells, growth factors, and biomaterials to mimic natural tissue characteristics, has opened new avenues for engineering of dental tissues for regenerative dentistry. Furthermore, 3D printing has emerged as a powerful tool in preclinical dental education. The incorporation of 3D-printed dental replicas into educational curricula bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical applications, fostering a more comprehensive understanding of dental procedures by providing anatomically accurate tooth models for hands-on learning. Here, we present recent progress in the utilization of additive manufacturing techniques to revolutionize tooth restoration procedures, offering innovative solutions for clinicians, researchers, and dental educators. As a limitation and future outlook, we highlight the role of interdisciplinary collaboration, and technological and regulatory advancements in harnessing the full potential of 3D printing for effective clinical translation.
