Abstract:Soft mechanical metamaterials with negative swelling responses represent a class of man-made materials with specially engineered micro-architectures, which are attractive for applications in areas such as biomedical engineering, aerospace and microelectronics. These soft mechanical metamaterials are usually constructed with laminated filaments that serve as building block structures in periodic lattices, with capabilities to convert hydraulic deformations of active materials into large bending deformations of the filamentary microstructures. The previous studies mainly relied on massive calculations of finite element analyses (FEA) as the core process of metamaterial designs to achieve targeted mechanical properties. The FEA calculations could, however, be very cumbersome and time-consuming, especially when the micro-architecture involves a large number of complex microstructures. This paper introduces a theoretical model that can predict accurately the swelling-induced deformations in such soft mechanical metamaterials consisting of sandwiched horseshoe microstructures. This model takes into account the evident shape change of sandwiched cross section observed in experiments, during the hydration process. Experimental and computational studies on mechanical metamaterials with a wide range of microstructure geometries were carried out to validate the developed model. These results unveil the significant role of out-of-plane deformations on the swellability of the mechanical metamaterials. The theoretical model sheds light on the essential microstructure-property relationship, which could serve as a reference of metamaterial designs to achieve desired swelling behavior. Furthermore, we leverage the active control of microstructure geometry during hydration to offer tunable phononic band structures, with potential applications in noise/vibration control and wave mitigation.
Tunable Auxetic Mechanical Metamaterials with “Arch-Shaped” Units

Abstract:Rationally designed artificial materials providing unusual mechanical properties are attracting continuous interests due to the wide technological applications such as metamaterials for flexible electron and biomedical devices. A variety of natural biological tissues exhibit "J-shaped" stress-strain behavior, so a challenge and interesting subject is to offer protection to electronics from a certain strain that may induce potential device failures. In the current letter, a novel porous auxetic metamaterial with "J-shaped" stress-strain curve is designed and a method for tuning Poisson's ratio and stress-strain curve is illustrated. Experimental tests, numerical simulations, and analytical modeling are implemented to quantify the evolution of the Poisson's ratio and stress-strain curve, revealing the underlying mechanisms responsible for the unusual behavior. The structure simultaneously shows elastic wave bandgaps at certain frequency, which can finally extend to three-dimension. The designed structural metamaterial has potential for applications in tissue engineering, bio-medical devices, and comfortable integration of stretchable electronics with biological tissues, it also provides a new routine to design architected metamaterial systems exhibiting desired properties.

Abstract:Mechanical metamaterials that combine multiple negative properties are rare, but have great appeal for applications in multipurpose devices. Herein, a novel metamaterial incorporating negative Poisson's ratio, negative compressibility, and negative thermal expansion or swelling was proposed. The unit cell was designed by simulating the bond structure of lead monoxide crystals using elastic beams. Analytical models for the mechanical responses of the unit cell were established, and expressions for Young's modulus, thermal expansion, Poisson's ratio, and compressibility were derived and confirmed by numerical simulations. The results showed that the metamaterial not only displayed a negative Poisson's ratio but also had negative linear and area compressibilities as well as negative linear, area, and volume thermal expansions if the geometric parameters were properly adjusted. Furthermore, metamaterials with negative linearity and area swelling were obtained experimentally by replacing the thermal expansion of the material with the water absorption expansion of a hydrogel. Such metamaterials with multiple negative indexes are expected to contribute to the feasibility of advanced multifunctional devices with mechanical, pressure, temperature, and moisture sensitivities.

Abstract:Mechanical metamaterials are man-made structures with counterintuitive mechanical properties that originate in the geometry of their unit cell instead of the properties of each component. The typical mechanical metamaterials are generally associated with the four elastic constants, the Young's modulus E, shear modulus G, bulk modulus K and Poisson's ratio υ, the former three of which correspond to the stiffness, rigidity, and compressibility of a material from an engineering point of view. Here we review the important advancements in structural topology optimisation of the underlying design principles, coupled with experimental fabrication, thereby to obtain various counterintuitive mechanical properties. Further, a clear classification of mechanical metamaterials have been established based on the fundamental material mechanics. Consequently, mechanical metamaterials can be divide into strong-lightweight (E/ρ), pattern transformation with tunable stiffness, negative compressibility (−4G/3 < K < 0), Pentamode metamaterials (G ≪ K) and auxetic metamaterials (G ≫ K), simultaneously using topology optimisation to share various fancy but feasible mechanical properties, ultralight, ultra-stiffness, well-controllable stiffness, vanishing shear modulus, negative compressibility and negative Poisson’s ratio. We provide here a broad overview of significant potential mechanical metamaterials together with the upcoming challenges in the intriguing and promising research field.

Abstract:Auxetic mechanical metamaterials are artificially architected materials that possess negative Poisson’s ratio, demonstrating transversal contracting deformation under external vertical compression loading. Their physical properties are mainly determined by spatial topological configurations. Traditionally, classical auxetic mechanical metamaterials exhibit relatively lower mechanical stiffness, compared to classic stretching dominated architectures. Nevertheless, in recent years, several novel auxetic mechanical metamaterials with high stiffness have been designed and proposed for energy absorption, load-bearing, and thermal-mechanical coupling applications. In this paper, mechanical design methods for designing auxetic structures with soft and stiff mechanical behavior are summarized and classified. For soft auxetic mechanical metamaterials, classic methods, such as using soft basic material, hierarchical design, tensile braided design, and curved ribs, are proposed. In comparison, for stiff auxetic mechanical metamaterials, design schemes, such as hard base material, hierarchical design, composite design, and adding additional load-bearing ribs, are proposed. Multi-functional applications of soft and stiff auxetic mechanical metamaterials are then reviewed. We hope this study could provide some guidelines for designing programmed auxetics with specified mechanical stiffness and deformation abilities according to demand.

Mechanical Metamaterials with Negative Compressibility Transitions

Abstract:When tensioned, ordinary materials expand along the direction of the applied force. Here, we explore network concepts to design metamaterials exhibiting negative compressibility transitions, during which a material undergoes contraction when tensioned (or expansion when pressured). Continuous contraction of a material in the same direction of an applied tension, and in response to this tension, is inherently unstable. The conceptually similar effect we demonstrate can be achieved, however, through destabilisations of (meta)stable equilibria of the constituents. These destabilisations give rise to a stress-induced solid-solid phase transition associated with a twisted hysteresis curve for the stress-strain relationship. The strain-driven counterpart of negative compressibility transitions is a force amplification phenomenon, where an increase in deformation induces a discontinuous increase in response force. We suggest that the proposed materials could be useful for the design of actuators, force amplifiers, micro-mechanical controls, and protective devices.

Abstract:Real-time tunable mechanical metamaterial is an emerging filed attracting great attention. It enables a wide range of mechanical properties but is hard to design and fabricate due to its complexity. Here, a pneumatically actuated tunable negative stiffness mechanical metamaterial with real-time tunable properties is presented. Numerical simulations and experiments were both employed to investigate the proposed real-time tunable negative stiffness mechanical metamaterial. Research results demonstrate that multistage pattern-transformation can be realized through the pneumatic actuation. Uniaxial compression and vibration tests reveal the influence of the inner air pressure on the metamaterial's basic mechanical properties and the vibration isolation performance, respectively. Additionally, real negative stiffness behavior and high energy absorption efficiency are achievable for the proposed metamaterial. This study can be a reference to relevant researches on tunable mechanical metamaterials, and presents a new path for designing real-time tunable negative stiffness mechanical metamaterials.

Abstract:By incorporating soft materials into the architecture, flexible mechanical metamaterials enable promising applications, e.g., energy modulation, and programmable shape morphing, with a well‐controllable mechanical response, but suffer from spatial and temporal programmability towards higher‐level mechanical intelligence. One feasible solution is to introduce snapping structures and then tune their responses by accurately tailoring the stress‐strain curves. However, owing to the strongly coupled nonlinearity of structural deformation and material constitutive model, it is difficult to deduce the stress‐strain curve of snapping metamaterials using conventional ways. Here, a machine learning pipeline is trained with the finite element analysis data that considers those strongly coupled nonlinearities mentioned above to accurately tailor the stress‐strain curves of beam‐based snapping mechanical metamaterial sheets for on‐demand mechanical response with an accuracy of 97.41%, and they conform to experimental data well. Utilizing the established approach, the energy absorption efficiency of the snapping metamaterial‐based device can be tuned within the accessible range to realize different rebound heights of a falling ball, and soft actuators can be spatially and temporally programmed to achieve synchronous and sequential actuation with a single energy input. Purely relying on structure designs, the accurately tailored snapping metamaterial increases the devices' tunability/programmability. Lightweight Self‐Forming Super‐Elastic Mechanical Metamaterials with Adaptive Stiffness

Abstract:Scarcity of stiff, yet compliant, materials is a major obstacle toward biological‐like mechanical systems that perform precise manipulations while being resilient under excessive load. A macroscopic cellular structure comprising two pre‐stressed elastic "phases" is introduced, which displays a load‐sensitive stiffness that drops by 30 times upon a "pseudoductile transformation" and accommodates a fully recoverable compression of over 60%. This provides an exceptional 20 times more deformability beyond the linear‐elastic regime, doubling the capability of previously reported super‐elastic materials. In virtue of the pre‐stressing process based on thermal‐shrinkage, it simultaneously enables a heat‐activated self‐formation that transforms a flat laminate into the metamaterial with 50 times volumetric growth. The metamaterial is thereby inherently lightweight with a bulk density in the order of 0.01 g cm−3, which is one order of magnitude lower than existing super‐elastic materials. Besides the highly programmable geometrical and mechanical characteristics, this paper is the first to present a method that generates single‐crystal or poly‐crystal‐like 3D lattices with anisotropic or isotropic super‐elasticity. This pre‐stress‐induced adaptive stiffness with high deformability could be a step toward in situ deployed ultra‐lightweight mechanical systems with a diverse range of applications that benefit from being stiff and compliant.

Abstract:Negative stiffness (NS) mechanical metamaterials have excellent application prospect in a broad range of fields such as energy trapping, repeated energy absorption and so on. Although various kinds of NS mechanical metamaterials have been proposed, one configuration cannot simultaneously achieve multi-stability and mono-stability. This paper presented a novel multifunctional NS mechanical metamaterial structure, which possessed tailored functions of multi-stable and compressive mono-stable state without geometrical parameters adjustment. The novel multifunctional NS mechanical metamaterial structure with a conical shape consisted of both soft and hard material part and was fabricated by additive manufacturing technology. NS behaviors were achieved by the instability of the soft counterpart. Mechanical performance of this novel multifunctional NS mechanical metamaterial structure under axial compression was experimentally and numerically investigated. Influences of geometrical parameters tailoring stable state were systematically investigated and the ratio of offset distance, tilt angle, slenderness were found the key factors. Effective methods to make sure the tri-layer metamaterial structure achieving multi-stable after unloading from completely compacted state were proposed.
Modular Reprogrammable 3D Mechanical Metamaterials with Unusual Hygroscopic Deformation Modes

Abstract:The majority of polymer-based materials demonstrate expansion upon absorbing water from the air. Mechanical metamaterials provide an interesting way to achieve unusual hygroscopic deformation. However, previous works only accommodate the limited tunability of negative hygroscopic expansion by theoretical analysis but never involve other deformations modes. This work proposes modular reprogrammable 3D moisture-sensitive mechanical metamaterials with switchable hygroscopic deformation modes, which are built up of bi-material curved strips and cubic nodes and were fabricated by multi-material 3D printing. Depending on the geometrical parameters and spatial layouts of the curved strips, the metamaterials exhibit tunable coefficient of hygroscopic expansion from negative to positive. In addition to homogeneous deformation, complex 3D hygroscopic deformation modes can be achieved including shear and twist. More interestingly, the metamaterials are reprogrammable since all the deformation modes can be switched by modular disassembling and reassembling the curved strips, just like LEGO building blocks. This work demonstrates a feasible approach to achieve customized 3D hygroscopic deformation through easy block building for specific engineering applications including eliminating hygroscopic stress, shape morphing structures, and smart actuators.

3D Tiled Auxetic Metamaterial: A New Family of Mechanical Metamaterial with High Resilience and Mechanical Hysteresis

Abstract:For artificial materials, desired properties often conflict. For example, engineering materials often achieve high energy dissipation by sacrificing resilience and vice versa, or desired auxeticity by losing their isotropy, which limits their performance and applications. To solve these conflicts, a strategy is proposed to create novel mechanical metamaterial via 3D space filling tiles with engaging key‐channel pairs, exemplified via auxetic 3D keyed‐octahedron‐cuboctahedron metamaterials. This metamaterial shows high resilience while achieving large mechanical hysteresis synergistically under large compressive strain. Especially, this metamaterial exhibits ideal isotropy approaching the theoretical limit of isotropic Poisson's ratio,1, as rarely seen in existing 3D mechanical metamaterials. In addition, the new class of metamaterials provide wide tunability on mechanical properties and behaviors, including an unusual coupled auxeticity and twisting behavior under normal compression. The designing methodology is illustrated by the integral of numerical modeling, theoretical analysis, and experimental characterization. The new mechanical metamaterials have broad applications in actuators and dampers, soft robotics, biomedical materials, and engineering materials/systems for energy dissipation. Programmable and Resilient Metamaterials with Anisotropic and Non-Linear Mechanical Responses Composed Exclusively of Stiff Constituents.

Abstract:Recently, significant progress has been made in the field of flexible bulk metamaterials composed of soft and elastic materials, unlocking the potential for achieving programmable non-linear mechanical responses, such as shape morphing, energy absorption, and information processing. However, the majority of these metamaterials utilize expensive hyperelastic materials and require complex fabrication processes. Additionally, constructing eco-friendly stiff constituents for these metamaterials remains challenging due to their limited elastic limit strains (<0.1). Here, we propose a systematic design strategy by combining curved beams with chiral metastructures to generate a family of three-dimensional programmable resilient mechanical metamaterials without relying on flexible or hyperelastic constituents. These tiled metamaterials demonstrate robust, anisotropic and non-linear resilience under large elastic compression strains (>0.75), while exhibiting a programmable effective modulus reduction of nearly 6 orders of magnitude compared to the native stiff components. Furthermore, leveraging their stable resilience under high-frequency stimuli, we successfully developed a meter-scale soft robot capable of traversing complex narrow scenarios on demand without the need for flexible materials or sophisticated pipelines. We anticipate that these mechanical metamaterials could serve as a universal platform for programmable active dampers, modular flexible robots, and medical rehabilitation equipment at various scales.
Viscoelastic negative stiffness metamaterial with multistage load bearing and programmable energy absorption ability

Abstract:The mechanical properties of negative stiffness (NS) metamaterial could be customized and tuned in a wide range for various requirements, achieving programmable performances by the design from the aspect of structure and material. This work investigates the viscoelastic NS metamaterial based on double curved beams using a combined approach of experiments, simulations, and analytical modeling with an emphasis on multistage loading bearing and programmable energy absorption ability. Numerical simulations are first implemented based on the finite element models of three types of metamaterial cells, which provide comparisons of load bearing and energy absorption properties. Further, the effects of geometric parameters of multistage metamaterial element and the mechanisms are analyzed. An analytical discrete model is then innovatively developed to provide straightforward understandings of the geometric effects and reveal the role of viscoelasticity by examining the instantaneous loading responses and rate-dependent behaviors. Experimentally, we fabricate the metamaterial samples using 3D-printing technique and perform compression tests to validate the properties based on different boundary conditions, loading rates and cyclic loading and unloading. Results of this work show the potential of wide programmable room for mechanical properties through structure and functional material design, such as multistage load bearing capacity and energy absorption ability.

Abstract:This research was focused on innovative design of lattice metamaterials that can exhibit tunable double-negative mechanical properties and elastic isotropy simultaneously. A discrete topology optimization method using a multi-material ground structure was developed to create microlattices exhibiting both negative thermal expansion coefficient and negative Poisson's ratio in a single integrated design, while maintaining elastic isotropy. First, the numerical homogenization method with beam elements was used to estimate the effective thermal and elastic properties of a microlattice. Second, the topological design, subject to required geometric constraints, was formulated as a mixed integer programming problem to discover a series of multi-material microlattices that present customized isotropic values of negative thermal expansion coefficient and negative Poisson's ratio. Finally, several three-dimensional multi-material microstructures were produced by altering either the cross-sections or constituent materials of struts to demonstrate their tunable mechanical properties.

Abstract:Mechanical metamaterials are facing various multi-functional requirements. In this study, a series of auxetic metamaterials with enhanced negative thermal expansion and improved stiffness are proposed. These metamaterials consist of four novel L -shaped microstructures connected in various clockwise or counterclockwise directions. Two length ratios and four angle parameters are utilized to define the geometry of these metamaterials. Both analytical analysis and validated numerical homogenization methods are employed to determine their effective thermoelastic properties, including effective Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, and coefficient of thermal expansion. It is demonstrated that tailoring these microstructural geometries can modulate the effective thermoelastic properties of these metamaterials accordingly. By appropriately tailoring the geometric parameters, these metamaterials exhibit increased effective stiffness as well as more pronounced auxeticity and negative thermal expansion compared to traditional triangle and trapezoid microstructures. Notably, the in-plane effective anisotropic or isotropic Poisson's ratio and coefficient of thermal expansion can be adjustable over a broader range from negative to positive values. High stiffness, High strength, and near-zero thermal expansion can be achieved concurrently in these metamaterials, which is very conducive for structural designing in thermal environments. These metamaterials with a coupled design of stiffness, thermal expansion, and Poisson's ratio hold significant potential for advancing applications in satellite platforms, space structures, composite sandwiches, and precision equipment.

Abstract:Mechanical metamaterials enable customizing the elastic properties of physical objects by altering their fine-scale structure. A broad gamut of effective material properties can be produced even from a single fabrication material by optimizing the geometry of a periodic microstructure tiling. Past work has extensively studied the capabilities of microstructures in the small-displacement regime, where periodic homogenization of linear elasticity yields computationally efficient optimal design algorithms. However, many applications involve flexible structures undergoing large deformations for which the accuracy of linear elasticity rapidly deteriorates due to geometric nonlinearities. Design of microstructures at finite strains involves a massive increase in computation and is much less explored; no computational tool yet exists to design metamaterials emulating target hyperelastic laws over finite regions of strain space. We make an initial step in this direction, developing algorithms to accelerate homogenization and metamaterial design for nonlinear elasticity and building a complete framework for the optimal design of planar metamaterials. Our nonlinear homogenization method works by efficiently constructing an accurate interpolant of a microstructure's deformation over a finite space of macroscopic strains likely to be endured by the metamaterial. From this interpolant, the homogenized energy density, stress, and tangent elasticity tensor describing the microstructure's effective properties can be inexpensively computed at any strain. Our design tool then fits the effective material properties to a target constitutive law over a region of strain space using a parametric shape optimization approach, producing a directly manufacturable geometry. We systematically test our framework by designing a catalog of materials fitting isotropic Hooke's laws as closely as possible. We demonstrate significantly improved accuracy over traditional linear metamaterial design techniques by fabricating and testing physical prototypes.

Abstract:Most natural materials expand uniformly in all directions upon heating. Artificial, engineered systems offer opportunities to tune thermal expansion properties in interesting ways. Previous reports exploit diverse design principles and fabrication techniques to achieve a negative or ultralow coefficient of thermal expansion, but very few demonstrate tunability over different behaviors. This work presents a collection of 2D material structures that exploit bimaterial serpentine lattices with micrometer feature sizes as the basis of a mechanical metamaterials system capable of supporting positive/negative, isotropic/anisotropic, and homogeneous/heterogeneous thermal expansion properties, with additional features in unusual shearing, bending, and gradient modes of thermal expansion. Control over the thermal expansion tensor achieved in this way provides a continuum‐mechanics platform for advanced strain‐field engineering, including examples of 2D metamaterials that transform into 3D surfaces upon heating. Integrated electrical and optical sources of thermal actuation provide capabilities for reversible shape reconfiguration with response times of less than 1 s, as the basis of dynamically responsive metamaterials.

Abstract:A combined theoretical, numerical, and experimental design framework for fractal metamaterials with programmable mechanical properties, imperfection‐insensitivity, and shape reconfigurability is developed. Integrated devices with sensors embedded in designed fractal metamaterials with bionic stiffness matching and LED devices with shape reconfiguration are demonstrated. Lattice metamaterials constructed by curved microstructures exhibit large stretchability and are promising in soft electronics and soft robotics. Fractal structures are particularly efficient in improving stretchability as it shows multiple‐order uncurling. However, the development of fractal metamaterials is hindered by hierarchical structures and large deformations. In this study, a design framework combining experiments, hierarchical theoretical models, and finite element simulations is developed to program the mechanical behaviors of fractal metamaterials. For 3D printing, a digital design tool is developed to visualize the structure and automatically generate the manufacturing representations. Results show that large stretchability (≈360%), bionic stress–strain curve matching, and imperfection insensitivity can be programmed by tuning the geometric parameters. An integrated device of an electromyogram sensor embedded in an imperfection‐insensitive fractal metamaterial that matches the J‐shaped stress–strain curve of human skin is demonstrated. Light‐emitting diode devices based on fractal metamaterial with shape reconfiguration are also presented. This st paves a new way to realize multifunctional soft devices using fractal metamaterials.
