Abstract:Polymer Electrolytes In article number 2203413, Chang Yun Son, Moon Jeong Park, and co-workers establish a platform for innovative electrolyte technologies to achieve superionic conduction from solid-state polymer electrolytes. Through the rational design of bifunctional polymers capable of unique intra-monomer hydrogen bonding, interconnected rod-like ion channels are formed in the glassy polymer matrix, which enables a high ionic conductivity of 10−3 S cm−1 and high storage modulus of ca. 100 MPa at 25 °C.

Abstract:Flexible electrolytes with solid self‐supporting properties are highly desired in the fields of energy and electronics. However, traditional flexible electrolytes prepared by doping ionic liquids or salt solutions into a polymer matrix pose a risk of liquid component leakage during device operation. In this work, we report the development of supramolecular ionic network electrolytes using polyoxometalate nanoclusters as supramolecular crosslinkers to solidify bola‐type zwitterionic liquids. The resulting self‐supporting electrolytes possess semi‐solid features and show a high proton conductivity of 8.2×10−4 S cm−1 at low humidity (RH = 30%). Additionally, the electrolytes exhibit a typical plateau region in rheological tests, indicating that their dynamic network structures can contribute mechanical behavior similar to the entangled networks in covalent polymer materials. This work introduces a new paradigm for designing flexible solid electrolytes and expands the concept of reticular chemistry to noncrystalline systems. This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:The leakage and volatilization of liquid electrolytes raise potential safety risks in the development of electrochemical energy storage devices with high energy density. Herein, novel solid-state zwitterionic materials containing sulfonyl imide as a highly delocalized anionic structure were synthesized for highly targeted lithium ion conducting matrices. The influences of the molecular structure characteristics on thermal behavior and electrochemical property were investigated comprehensively. Due to the weak Coulomb interaction between the sulfonyl imide moiety and cationic species, the rationally designed zwitterionic electrolytes showed a high conductivity of 0.44 mS cm(-1). And the obtained high lithium ion transference number of 0.43 is four times higher than that of the widely employed sulfonate analogues. Additionally, excellent cycling stability of the lithium plating/stripping process and super resistance to electrochemical oxidation (up to 5.5 V) were observed. This molecular engineering strategy for lithium ion conductor advances new possibilities for developing solvent-free and non-migrating electrolyte matrix materials for lithium metal batteries. Abstract:Zwitterionic materials can exhibit unique characteristics and are highly tunable by variation to the covalently bound cationic and anionic moieties. Despite the breadth of properties and potential uses reported to date, for electrolyte applications they have thus far primarily been used as additives or for making polymer gels. However, zwitterions offer intriguing promise as electrolyte matrix materials that are non-volatile and charged but non-migrating. Here we report a family of zwitterions that exhibit molecular disorder and plasticity, which allows their use as a solid-state conductive matrix. We have characterized the thermal, morphological and structural properties of these materials using techniques including differential scanning calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy, solid-state NMR and X-ray crystallography. We report the physical and transport properties of zwitterions combined with lithium salts and a lithium-functionalized polymer to form solid or high-salt-content liquid electrolytes. We demonstrate that the zwitterion-based electrolytes can allow high target ion transport and support stable lithium metal cell cycling. The ability to use disordered zwitterionic materials as electrolyte matrices for high target ion conduction, coupled with an extensive scope for varying the chemical and physical properties, has important implications for the future design of non-volatile materials that bridge the choice between traditional molecular and ionic solvent systems.

Abstract:Solid polymer electrolytes are promising electrolytes for safe and high-energy-density lithium metal batteries. However, traditional ether-based polymer electrolytes are limited by their low lithium-ion conductivity and narrow electrochemical window because of the well-defined and intimated Li+-oxygen binding topologies in the solvation structure. Herein, we proposed a new strategy to reduce the Li+-polymer interaction and strengthen the anion-polymer interaction by combining strong Li+-O (ether) interactions, weak Li+-O (ester) interactions with steric hindrance in polymer electrolytes. In this way, a polymer electrolyte with a high lithium ion transference number (0.80) and anion-rich solvation structure is obtained. This polymer electrolyte possesses a wide electrochemical window (5.5 V versus Li/Li+) and compatibility with both Li metal anode and high-voltage NCM cathode. Li||LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 full cells with middle-high active material areal loading (~7.5 mg cm-2) can stably cycle at 4.5 V. This work provides new insight into the design of polymer electrolytes for high-energy-density lithium metal batteries through the regulation of ion-dipole interactions.

Abstract:Solid polymer electrolytes have shown great prospect in high-energy lithium-metal batteries, yet the most critical challenge is their unsatisfactory ionic conductivity. A common strategy involves the incorporation of symmetric lamellar fillers with ions/molecules fixed in interlayers. However, because of strong fixation, it sacrifices "liquid-like" flow properties as small-molecular solvents in polymer matrices. Herein, a novel concept of pendulum-swing coordination within interlayers is proposed to integrate advantages from both scenarios, based on the design of one-side fixation of solvents in asymmetric lamellar fillers. This delicate modulation of the coordination environment ensures the weakened Li + -solvent interaction and the strengthened anion-cation dissociation of lithium salts. More importantly, it enhances dynamic motion of the "hanged" solvents in highly-confined space, activating "liquid-like" Li-ion conduction. Meanwhile, the confined solvent does not plasticize polymer matrices, thus excellent mechanical property maintains. As a result, the developed electrolyte exhibits an impressive ionic conductivity of 1.35 × 10 −4 S/cm at room temperature and exceptional anodic stability with stable Li stripping/platting cycles for over 2000 h. Solid-state Li-LiFePO 4 batteries exhibit good rate behavior and remarkable capacity retention of 85.4% after 400 cycles at 0.5C. This work provides enlightening ideas for continuous development of high-performance polymer electrolytes towards real applications of lithium-metal batteries.

Abstract:The low ionic conductivity and electrode-electrolyte interface instability issues with solid polymer electrolytes jeopardize their electrochemical performances in Lithium–ion batteries (LIBs). Use of quasi-solid-state electrolyte (QSSE) with concentrated Li salt embedded inside pore networks of Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs) can successfully address the aforementioned issues. Owing to the sieve effect of Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8 (ZIF-8) towards selective cation permeability over anion through interconnected pores' network, a unique QSSE with LiTFSI salt concentrated in the ZIF-8 skeleton used as a filler in poly(ethylene oxide) has been synthesized. LiTFSI gets embedded inside the interconnected pore network of ZIF-8 that furnishes unhindered pathways for Li+ ion migration leading to very high ionic conductivity ~6×10-4 Scm-1. The higher ionic conductivity is directly related to the Li ion conduction through the pore network of ZIF-8 which has been experimentally evident from complementary methods of Positron annihilation and Broadband dielectric spectroscopy. The design route of these types of QSSEs encompassing porous MOFs paves the way for realizing Li superionic conductor suitable for practical application in commercial LIBs with high safety and stability.

In Situ Polymerized Zwitterionic Copolymer Ionic Gel Electrolytes with High Performance for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Gel electrolytes are a promising research direction due to their high safety. However, its poor room temperature conductivity along with complex preparation process hinder its practical application. In this article, a type of zwitterionic gel electrolyte is prepared by in situ polymerization. The introduction of charged but nonmigrating zwitterionic copolymer in the polymer chain is beneficial to the dissociation of the lithium salt, improving the ion transport of the electrolyte on this account. At room temperature, the conductivity of lithium ion reaches 9.1 × 10-4 S cm-1, which contributes to achieve excellent electrochemical performance at high rates. The assembled Li|LiFePO4 cell also shows a capacity retention rate of 90.5% after 150 cycles at 0.5 C at room temperature as well as remarkable cycle stability at 1 C. These offer a novel tactic for the efficient and safe commercial application of lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Rational designs of solid polymer electrolytes with high ion conduction are critical in enabling the creation of advanced lithium batteries. However, known polymer electrolytes have much lower ionic conductivity than liquid/ceramics at room temperature, which limits their practical use in batteries. Here we show that precise positioning of designed repeating units in alternating polymer sequences lays the foundation for homogenized Li + distribution, non-aggregated Li + -anion solvation and sequence-assisted site-to-site ion migration, facilitating the tuning of Li + conductivity by up to three orders of magnitude. The assembled all-solid-state batteries facilitate reversible and dendrite-mitigated cycling against Li metal from ambient to elevated temperatures. This work demonstrates a powerful molecular engineering means to access highly ion-conductive solid-state materials for next-generation energy devices.

Abstract:Polymer-based solid electrolytes have been extensively studied for solid-state lithium metal batteries to achieve high energy density and reliable security. But, its practical application is severely limited by low ionic conductivity and slow Li + transference. Herein, based on the "binary electrolytes" of poly(vinylidene fluoride-chlorotrifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-CTFE)) and lithium salt (LiTFSI), a kind of eutectogel hybrid electrolytes (EHEs) with high Li + transference number was developed via tuning the spontaneous coupling of charge and vacated space generated by Li-cation diffusion utilizing the Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 12 (LLZTO) dopant. LLZTO doping promotes the dissociation of lithium salt, increases Li + carrier density, and boosts ion jumping and the coordination/decoupling reactions of Li + . As a result, the optimized EHEs-10% possess a high Li-transference number of 0.86 and a high Li + conductivity of 3.2×10 −4 S·cm −1 at room temperature. Moreover, the prepared EHEs-10% composite solid electrolyte presents excellent lithiumphilic and compatibility, and can be tested stably for 1,200 h at 0.3 mA·cm −2 with assembled lithium symmetric batteries. Likewise, the EHEs-10% films match well with high-loading LiFePO 4 and LiCoO 2 cathodes (> 10 mg·cm −2 ) and exhibit remarkable interface stability. Particularly, the LiFePO 4 //EHEs-10%//Li and LiCoO 2 //EHEs-10%//Li cells deliver high rate performance of 118 mA·hg −1 at 1 C and 93.7 mAh·g −1 at 2 C with coulombic efficiency of 99.3% and 98.1%, respectively. This work provides an in-depth understanding and new insights into our design for polymer electrolytes with fast Li + diffusion.

Abstract:Polymer electrolytes are the key candidates for solid-state batteries benefiting from their intrinsic advantages over inorganic electrolytes in terms of flexibility and easy processability. However, they suffer from low ionic conductivity and poor mechanical strength, which restrict their wide utilization. Conventional ceramic fillers are used to improve the mechanical properties of polymer electrolytes but lack sufficient Li+ conductivity. In this work, a framework with vertical channels that possess fast Li+ movement is designed. It is found that the poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) compound in the vertical channel framework benefits to improve the ionic conductivity and mechanical strength synchronously. The framework in which ionic liquids are loaded on a zirconium dioxide surface (ZrO2@ILs) helps to improve ionic conductivity by 2 orders of magnitude compared with PEO, which is due to the enhanced orientation of ion transport. By optimizing the content of ZrO2@ILs, the elastic modulus is also tripled. Therefore, the symmetric lithium battery can cycle stably for more than 800 h at a current density of 0.25 mA cm-1, whereas the lithium metal battery has a specific capacity of 135 mAh g-1 at a current density of 2C and can cycle stably for more than 200 cycles at 60 °C.

Abstract:Tuning polymer-ion interaction strength is critical for balancing ion solvation and transport in solid polymer electrolytes for battery applications. In mixed Li+/electron conducting systems for improved battery binders, the design space is further complicated by seemingly opposing design rules for electron and ion conducting polymers. Conjugated polymers functionalized with cationic side chains have demonstrated high ionic conductivity, lithium transport, and electronic conductivity by combining long-range polymer ordering with diffuse ion interactions. Herein, we demonstrate a family of mixed conducting polythiophenes functionalized with a range of cationic side chains, namely imidazolium, trimethylammonium, and ammonium groups. The strength of ionic interactions and structure of the side chains govern lithium-selective transport, resulting in high Li+ conductivity (∼10–4 S/cm at 80 °C) and electronic conductivity. The more diffuse imidazolium ion affords labile ionic interactions, resulting in higher lithium transference than the other cations studied. Electronic conductivity is also higher in the imidazolium system, stemming from the ability of the planar side chains to stack while also accommodating the bulky TFSI– counterions. These results demonstrate the importance of interaction strength in ion transport while also indicating that the physical structure of the side chain has an impact on electronic conduction. The imidazolium group strikes a balance, achieving superior properties across all metrics.

Abstract:The ionic conductivity of poly(vinylidene fluoride‐co‐hexafluoropropylene)‐based solid‐state electrolytes is greatly improved by tuning the Li+ local coordination environment via d‐cellobiose octaacetate. d‐cellobiose octaacetate competes with anions and polymer chains for coordination of Li+ thorough C═O groups to weaken their coordination of Li+, increase the number of carriers, and strengthen the transport kinetics of Li+, booming the ionic conductivity of SPEs at room temperature. Great efforts have been devoted to reducing their crystallinity to increase ionic conductivity but ignored their Li+ local coordination environment influence. Here, Li+ local coordination environment tunable poly(vinylidene fluoride‐co‐hexafluoropropylene)‐based solid‐state electrolytes are experimentally realized via d‐cellobiose octaacetate. d‐cellobiose octaacetate competes with anions and polymer chains for coordination of Li+ thorough C═O groups to weaken their coordination of Li+, increase the number of carriers, and strengthen the transport kinetics of Li+, booming the ionic conductivity of SPEs at room temperature. When used in lithium metal symmetric batteries and full batteries, SPEs greatly improve their electrochemical performance at 25 °C. Abstract:An alternating copolymer-based poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) was synthesized and blended with PVDF-HFP to obtain solid-state polymer electrolytes with both high mechanical strength and high ionic conductivity. Structural analysis reveals that the high performance is attributed to the nanophase separation of PVDF-HFP with a PIL in the nanometric scale, which benefits from an alternating polymer architecture of the PIL.

Abstract:This article reviews the ionic conduction mechanisms and optimization strategies of polymer‐based solid electrolytes, including solvent‐free polymer electrolytes, composite polymer electrolytes, and quasi‐solid/gel polymer electrolytes, while the ion‐pair dissociation, ion mobility, polymer relaxation, and interactions at polymer/filler interfaces are highlighted. Good safety, high interfacial compatibility, low cost, and facile processability make polymer‐based solid electrolytes promising materials for next‐generation batteries. Key issues related to polymer‐based solid electrolytes, such as synthesis methods, ionic conductivity, and battery architecture, are investigated in past decades. However, mechanistic understanding of the ionic conduction is still lacking, which impedes the design and optimization of polymer‐based solid electrolytes. In this review, the ionic conduction mechanisms and optimization strategies of polymer‐based solid electrolytes, including solvent‐free polymer electrolytes, composite polymer electrolytes, and quasi‐solid/gel polymer electrolytes, are summarized and evaluated. Challenges and strategies for enhancing the ionic conductivity are elaborated, while the ion‐pair dissociation, ion mobility, polymer relaxation, and interactions at polymer/filler interfaces are highlighted. This comprehensive review is especially pertinent for the targeted enhancement of the Li‐ion conductivity of polymer‐based solid electrolytes.

Abstract:The quasi-solid electrolyte based on Poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) has drawn great interest owing to good wettability and compatibility with lithium metal anode. However, the low ionic conductivity and lithium-ion transfer number limit the practical application of Poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene). Herein, quasi-solid electrolyte is prepared by adding NASICON-type lithium-ion conductor Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)3 to Poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene). The Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)3 not only reduces the crystallinity of the polymer, but also participates in the conduction process of Li+. Through the synergistic effect of Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)3 and Poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene), the quasi-solid polymer electrolyte has a high ionic conductivity (3.64 × 10−3 S cm−1) at room temperature and large lithium-ion transfer number (0.64). The symmetric cell exhibits a small overpotential (18 mV) as well as a stable cycle (3000 h) at 0.2 mA cm−2 with areal capacity of 0.2 mAh cm−2. The full cell with LiFePO4 cathode keeps a discharge capacity of 143.4 mAh g−1 after 600 cycles with capacity retention of 94.7%, and also performs good electrochemical performance with high voltage cathode (LiNi0.85Mn0.1Co0.05O2). Furthermore, the pouch cell assembled by quasi-solid polymer electrolyte have good flexibility, which can be used normally after folding and shearing. Our work supplies a feasible solution for the design of quasi-solid lithium metal batteries.

An Ion‐Channel‐Restructured Zwitterionic Covalent Organic Framework Solid Electrolyte for All‐Solid‐State Lithium‐Metal Batteries

Abstract:Organic solid electrolytes offer an effective route for safe and high‐energy‐density all‐solid‐state Li metal batteries. However, it remains a challenge to devise a new strategy to promote the dissociation of strong ion pairs and the transport of ionic components in organic solid electrolytes. Herein, a zwitterionic covalent organic framework (Zwitt‐COF) with well‐defined chemical and pore structures is prepared as a solid electrolyte capable of accelerating the dissociation and transport of Li ions. The Zwitt‐COF solid electrolyte exhibits a high room‐temperature ionic conductivity of 1.65 × 10−4 S cm−1 with a wide electrochemical stability window. Besides, the Zwitt‐COF solid electrolyte displays stable Li plating/stripping behavior via effective inhibition of the formation of Li dendrites and dead Li, leading to superior long‐term cycle performance with retention of 99% discharge capacity and 98% Coulombic efficiency in an all‐solid‐state Li‐metal battery. Theoretical simulations reveal that the incorporation of zwitterionic groups into COF can facilitate the dissociation of strong ion pairs and reconstruct the AA‐stacking configuration by dissociative adsorption of Li+ ions on Zwitt‐COF producing linear hexagonal ion channels in the Zwitt‐COF solid electrolyte. This strategy based on Zwitt‐COF can provide an alternative way to construct various solid‐state Li batteries.

Abstract:Solid polymer electrolytes are considered a promising alternative to traditional liquid electrolytes in energy storage applications because of their good mechanical properties, and excellent thermal and chemical stability. A gap, however, still exists in understanding ion transport mechanisms and improving ion transport in solid polymer electrolytes. Therefore, it is crucial to bridge composition--structure and structure--property relationships. Here we demonstrate that size asymmetry, $\lambda$, represented by the ratio of counterion to charged monomer size, plays a key role in both the nanostructure and in the ionic dynamics. More specifically, when the nanostructure is modified by the external electric field such that the mobility cannot be described by linear response theory, two situations arise. The ionic mobility increases as $\lambda$ decreases (small counterions) in the weak electrostatics (high dielectric constant) regime. Whereas in systems with strong electrostatic interactions, ionomers with higher size symmetry ($\lambda \approx 1$) display higher ionic mobility. Moreover, ion transport is found to be dominated by the hopping of the ions and not by moving ionic clusters (also known as "vehicular'' charge transport). These results serve as a guide for designing ion-containing polymers for ion transport related applications.
