Abstract:Lithium metal batteries have been considered as one of the most promising next‐generation power‐support devices due to their high specific energy and output voltage. However, the uncontrollable side‐reaction and lithium dendrite growth lead to the limited serving life and hinder the practical application of lithium metal batteries. Here, a tri‐monomer copolymerized gel polymer electrolyte (TGPE) with a cross‐linked reticulation structure was prepared by introducing a cross‐linker (polyurethane group) into the acrylate‐based in situ polymerization system. The soft segment of polyurethane in TGPE enables the far migration of lithium ions, and the ‐NH forms hydrogen bonds in the hard segment to build a stable cross‐linked framework. This system hinders anion migration and leads to a high Li+ migration number (tLi+=0.65), which achieves uniform lithium deposition and effectively inhibits lithium dendrite growth. As a result, the assembled symmetric cell shows robust reversibility over 5500 h at a current density of 1 mA cm‐2. The LFP||TGPE||Li cell has capacity retention of 89.8% after cycling 800 times at a rate of 1C. In summary, in situ polymerization of TGPE electrolytes is expected to be a candidate material for high energy density lithium metal batteries.

An In Situ Prepared Comb-like Polycaprolactone-Based Gel Electrolyte for High-Performance Lithium Metal Batteries

Abstract:Herein, we present the synthesis and electrochemical performance of a comb-like polycaprolactone-based gel electrolyte from acrylate terminated polycaprolactone oligomers and liquid electrolyte for high-voltage lithium metal batteries. The ionic conductivity of this gel electrolyte at room temperature was measured to be 8.8 × 10-3 S cm-1, which is an exceptionally high value that is more than sufficient for the stable cycling of solid-state lithium metal batteries. The Li+ transference number was detected to be 0.45, facilitating the prohibition of concentration gradients and polarization, thereby prohibiting lithium dendrite formation. In addition, the gel electrolyte exhibits high oxidation voltage up to 5.0 V vs. Li+/Li and perfect compatibility against metallic lithium electrodes. The superior electrochemical properties provide the LiFePO4-based solid-state lithium metal batteries with excellent cycling stability, displaying a high initial discharge capacity of 141 mAh g-1 and an extraordinary capacity retention exceeding 74% of its initial specific capacity after being cycled for 280 cycles at 0.5C at room temperature. This paper presents a simple and effective in situ preparation process yielding an excellent gel electrolyte for high-performance lithium metal battery applications.

Abstract:By changing the state of the liquid electrolyte through in situ polymerization reaction, the prepared gel electrolyte effectively suppressed the interfacial side reactions. In situ curing also realized the integration of electrodes and enhanced the cycle stability of lithium metal batteries. The leakage of liquid electrolytes had been solved while improving the safety property. With the popularity and development of electronic devices, the demand for lithium batteries is increasing, which also puts high demands on the energy density, cycle life and safety of lithium batteries. Gel electrolytes achieve both of these requirements by curing the electrolytes to reduce the interfacial side reactions of lithium metal batteries. The ionic conductivity of the gel electrolytes prepared by in situ curing reach 8.0×10−4 S cm−1, and the ionic mobility number is 0.53. Meanwhile, the gel electrolytes maintain a stable electrochemical window of 1.0–5.0 V. Benefited with the interfacial regulation of PEGDA gel electrolytes, the gel lithium metal batteries show better cycling stability, and achieved 97 % capacity retention after 200 cycles (0.2 C) with a lower increasing rate of impedance.

Abstract:All-solid-state lithium batteries are still plagued by poor interface issue and difficult to achieve commercialization within a short time. Quasi-solid electrolyte has become an important development strategy to compromise liquid battery and all-solid-state battery. Herein, a high-performance gel electrolyte for enhanced interface compatibility and lithium metal stability in high-voltage lithium battery was provided via in-situ polymerization of 1, 3-dioxolane (DOL) and 1, 2-dimethoxyethane (DME) under initiation of LiPF6. By adjusting the DOL/DME ratio, the electrochemical behavior of the gel electrolyte was optimized. The gel electrolyte with DOL/DME ratio of 1:1 has a high ionic conductivity of 3.3 × 10−4 S cm−1 and a Li+ migration number of 0.68. Based on this gel electrolyte, the interface compatibility and lithium metal stability in high-voltage lithium battery were greatly enhanced, the Li-Li symmetric cell can be stably cycled over 700 h with no obvious polarization at a current density of 0.1 mA cm−2, the capacity retention rate of the high-voltage NCM622/Li battery reaches above 80 % after 150 cycles at 0.5 C and 25 °C. This work provides a practical idea for the development of high-performance polymer electrolytes and facilitates their application in Li-metal batteries.

Abstract:The cross-linking gel copolymer electrolytes containing alkyl acrylates, triethylene glycol dimethacrylate, and liquid electrolyte were prepared by in situ thermal polymerization. The gel polymer electrolytes containing 15 wt% polymer content and 85 wt% liquid electrolyte content with sufficient mechanical strength showed the high ionic conductivity around 5 × 10−3 Scm−1 at room temperature. The gel electrolytes containing different polymer matrices were prepared, and their physical observation and conductivity were discussed carefully. The cross-linking copolymer gel electrolytes of alkyl acrylates with other monomers were designed and synthesized. The results showed that copolymerization can improve the mechanical properties and ionic conductivities of the gel electrolytes. The polymer matrices of gels had excellent thermal stability and electrochemical stability. The scanning electron microscope analysis showed the gel electrolyte was the homogeneous structure, and the cross-linking polymer host was the porous three-dimensional network structure, which demonstrated the high conductivity of the gel electrolytes. The gel polymer Li-ion battery was prepared by this in situ thermal polymerization. The cell exhibited high charge-discharge efficiency at 0.1 C. The results of LiFePO4-PEA-Li cell and graphite-PEA-Li cell showed that gel polymer electrolytes have good compatibility with the battery electrodes materials.

Abstract:The polymer electrolytes are considered to be an alternative to liquid electrolytes for lithium-ion batteries because of their high thermal stability, flexibility, and wide applications. However, the polymer electrolytes have low ionic conductivity at room temperature due to the interfacial contact issue and the growing of lithium dendrites between the electrolytes/electrodes. In this study, we prepared gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) through an in situ thermal-induced cationic ring-opening strategy, using LiFSI as an initiator. As-synthesized GPEs were characterized with a series of technologies. The as-synthesized PNDGE 1.5 presented good thermal stability (up to 150 °C), low glass transition temperature (Tg 10−4 S/cm), and good interfacial contact with the cell components and comparable anodic oxidation voltage (4.0 V). In addition, PNGDE 1.5 exhibited a discharge capacity of 131 mAh/g after 50 cycles at 0.2 C and had a 92% level of coulombic efficiency. Herein, these results can contribute to developing of new polymer electrolytes and offer the possibility of good compatibility through the in situ technique for Li-ion batteries.

Abstract:As people possess more safety conscious, the issue of electrolytes is attracting concern. The gel polymer electrolyte offers high ionic conductivity, wettability, and good interfacial contact, effectively reducing electrolyte leakage and improving battery safety. This study presents a novel gel polymer electrolyte that has been investigated for its excellent physical and electrochemical properties. The electrospinning film possesses a thin and flat surface with a thickness of only 40 ± 5 μm and particle size of around 300–400 nm. This creates an ion-conductive dual-channels that optimize the migration of lithium ions and ensure good contact and interfacial stability. In addition, the electrochemical stability window ranges from 0 ~ 6.1 V (vs. Li+/Li), which can be applied to most high-voltage cathode materials on the market. The NCM811//Li cell constructed with gel polymer electrolyte exhibited a first discharge capacity of 202.9 mAh g−1 at 0.5C and still maintain a discharge capacity of 117.5 mAh g−1 after 300 cycles, as well as a capacity retention rate of 57.9%. This strategy provides a new idea for the next generation of high-performance lithium metal batteries.

Abstract:Lithium metal batteries have attracted much attention due to their high energy density. However, the critical safety issues and chemical instability of conventional liquid electrolytes in lithium metal batteries significantly limit their practical application. Herein, we propose polyethylene (PE)−based gel polymer electrolytes by in situ polymerization, which comprise a PE skeleton, polyethylene glycol and lithium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide as well as liquid carbonate electrolytes. The obtained PE−based gel polymer electrolyte exhibits good interfacial compatibility with electrodes, high ion conductivity, and wide electrochemical window at high temperatures. Moreover, the assembled LiFePO4//Li solid−state batteries employing PE−based gel polymer electrolyte with 50% liquid carbonate electrolytes deliver good rate performance and excellent cyclic life at both 60 °C and 80 °C. In particular, they achieve high specific capacities of 158.5 mA h g−1 with a retention of 98.87% after 100 cycles under 80 °C at 0.5 C. The in situ solidified method for preparing PE−based gel polymer electrolytes proposes a feasible approach for the practical application of lithium metal batteries.

Abstract:Electrolytes play a critical role in battery performance. They are associated with an increased risk of safety issues. The main challenge faced by many researchers is how to balance the physical and electrical properties of electrolytes. Gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) have received increasing attention due to their satisfactory properties of ionic conductivity, mechanical stability, and safety. Herein, we develop a gel network polymer electrolyte (GNPE) to address the challenge mentioned earlier. This GNPE was formed by tri-epoxide monomer and bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide lithium salt (LiFSI) via an in situ cationic polymerization under mild thermal conditions. The obtained GNPE exhibited a relatively high ionic conductivity (σ) of 2.63 × 10−4 S cm−1, lithium transference number (tLi+, 0.58) at room temperature (RT), and intimate electrode compatibility with LiFePO4 and graphite. The LiFePO4/GNPE/graphite battery also showed a promising cyclic performance at RT, e.g., a suitable discharge specific capacity of 127 mAh g−1 and a high Coulombic efficiency (>97%) after 100 cycles at 0.2 C. Moreover, electrolyte films showed good mechanical stability and formed the SEI layer on the graphite anode. This study provides a facile method for preparing epoxy-based electrolytes for high-performance lithium-ion batteries (LIBs).

Abstract:To improve the ion conduction ability and interfacial issues between electrolyte and electrode and provide a high safety and long lifespan for polymer electrolyte-based lithium metal batteries, gel polymer electrolytes with excellent thermal and electrochemical stability are prepared via polyacrylic salt-catalyzed radical polymerization. The gradient design of polyacrylic complex impels the in-situ formation of gel polymer electrolytes, robust solid electrolyte interphase and cathode electrolyte interface layer, delivering an excellent lithium platting-stripping property (1000 h, 0.1 mA cm−2) and a long-term cycling with 80.1% capacity retention (600 cycles, 1C) for the as-assembled lithium symmetric and Li/LiFePO4 cells, respectively. Moreover, the manual ion-compensation between the bulk electrolyte and the cathode enhances the diffusion of lithium ion with a high diffusion coefficient of 3.47 × 10−13 cm2 s−1, and slows down the capacity decay with a high discharge capacity of 121.0 mA h/g at 5C. This method provides a direction for improving the electrolyte–electrode compatibility and designing advanced lithium metal batteries.

Abstract:Polymer-based solid electrolytes (PSEs) offer great promise in developing lithium metal batteries due to their attractive features such as safety, light weight, low cost, and high processability. However, a PSE-based lithium battery usually requires a relatively high temperature (60 °C or above) to complete charge and discharge due to the poor ionic conductivity of PSEs. Herein, a gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) film with a supramolecular network structure through a facile one-step photopolymerization is designed and developed. The crosslinked structure and quadruple hydrogen bonding fulfil the GPEs with high thermal stability and good mechanical property with a maximum tensile strain of 48%. The obtained GPEs possess a high ionic conductivity of 3.8 × 10-3 S cm-1 at 25 °C and a decomposition voltage ≥ 4.6 V (vs Li/Li+ ). The cells assembled with LiFePO4 cathode and Li anode, present an initial discharge specific capacity of 155.6 mAh g-1 and a good cycling efficiency with a capacity retention rate of 81.1% after 100 charges/discharge cycles at 0.1 C at ambient temperature. This work encompasses a route to develop high performance PSEs that can be operated at room temperature for future lithium metal batteries.

Abstract:Ether-based polymer electrolyte shows promising potential for application in solid-state lithium batteries owing to its cost-effectiveness, excellent flexibility, and above all, remarkable stability to lithium metal anode. However, it still suffers from challenges related to low ionic conductivity and inferior oxidation resistance. Herein, an ether-based gel composite electrolyte containing Li6.5La3Zr1.5Ta0.5O12 (LLZTO) ceramics (LL-GCE) is fabricated via an in-situ polymerization method which can guarantee good interface contact with electrodes. The ceramics not only activate the interaction between polymers and lithium salts, resulting in significantly enhanced ionic conductivity (7.9 x 10- 4 S cm- 1), but also collaborate with poly(1,3-dioxolane) (PDOL) to construct favorable anion-rich solvation configurations, which effectively restrict the anion migration with Li+ transference number significantly increased to 0.83. Furthermore, the regulated solvation structures can passivate the electrode surface with a high content of robust LiF components formed on the electrolyte/electrode interphase. Consequently, the composite electrolyte demonstrates excellent abilities to inhibit Li dendrite growth and match with high-voltage cathodes. For instance, the LiFePO4||Li cell using such electrolyte conveys a capacity of 135.4 mAh/ g and the capacity retention is 99.3% after 250 cycles at 1C. The LiCoO2||Li full cell also shows excellent cycling performance. This work provides an effective strategy to modify ether-based polymer electrolytes and can boost their development in high-performance solid state lithium metal batteries.

Abstract:Solid-state lithium (Li) metal batteries have been considered as the candidate for the next generation power system for their outstanding performance in energy density and safety. Nevertheless, while solid-state electrolytes are still plagued by incompatible interphases, Li metal anode also has been hindered by dendrites growth. Herein, a facile in-situ synthesis of gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) with polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate (PEGDMA) and pentaerythritol tetraacrylate (PETEA) as the hybrid polymer skeleton, for the first time, is employed to deal with these issues. The GPE displays high ionic conductivity (7.6 mS cm−1) at room temperature and high stability towards Li metal anode. More interestingly, the in-situ GPE can construct a uniform and stable SEI on the surface of Li metal anode and guarantee a long cycling life (>500 cycles) with a capacity retention of 90% in the LiFePO4|GPE|Li battery. This GPE with hybrid polymer skeletons opens up an innovative idea for the electrolyte design that will eventually promote the practical application of lithium metal batteries.

Abstract:In-situ polymerization is a method for fabricating lithium-ion batteries to contain solid or gel electrolytes without major manufacturing changes. Gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) wherein some polymer in incorporated, decreasing the volume of liquid electrolyte, have been pursued as they may be safer. One challenge with GPEs is reduced ion transport properties. In this work, macromonomers with different chain chemistry and ionic monomers are crosslinked on electrospun polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) in the presence of solvents, without conventional salt, to in-situ fabricate GPEs with elevated transference number within coin cells. These GPEs would be single-ion conductors in the case of complete ionic monomer polymerization to the crosslinked network. The effect of chain chemistry and the percentage of macromonomers and ionic monomers in the GPEs on conductivity are investigated. It is found that poly(siloxane) diacrylate (PDMSDA)- and perfluoropolyether tetra-acrylate (PFPETA)-based GPEs outperform the poly(propylene glycol) diacrylate (PPGDA)- and poly(tetrahydrofuran) diacrylate (PTHFDA)-based GPEs in terms of ionic conductivity. The highest ionic conductivity was achieved for a PDMSDA-based GPE at 4.2 × 10-4 S/cm at 23°C. Graphite/NMC-811 full cells prepared with the in-situ polymerized PDMSDA-based GPEs show capacity retention of 82.6% after 100 cycles, albeit with limited electrode utilization due to ion transport limitations.
In-Situ Synthesized Gel Polymer Electrolyte Enable High Capacity and Long-Cycle-Life Lithium Metal Batteries

Abstract:Solid-state lithium-metal batteries (SSLMBs) have attracted great attention due to their outstanding advantages in safety, electrochemical stability and interfacial compatibility. However, the low ionic conductivity and narrow electrochemical window restrict their practical application. Herein, in-situ polymerization electrolytes (IPEs) crosslinked by acrylonitrile (AN) and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) exhibit the superior ionic conductivity of 1.77×10-3 S cm-1 at 25 °C, the ultrahigh lithium transference number (tLi+) of 0.784 and the wider electrochemical stable window (ESW) of 5.65 V. The IPEs make the symmetrical Li||Li cells achieve the highly stable lithium stripping/plating cycling for over 3000 h at 0.1 mA cm-2. Meanwhile, IPE endows the solid-state LiFePO4||Li batteries with an excellent long-cycle performance over 700 cycles at 2.5 C with a capacity retention ratio over 95 %, as well as 1000 cycles at 1 C and superior capacity retention of 85 %. More importantly, the in-situ polymerized electrolytes containing polyacrylonitrile (PAN) open up a new frontier to promote the practical application of solid-state batteries with high safety and high energy density via in-situ solidification technology.
Ionogel hybrid polymer electrolytes encompassing room-temperature ionic liquids for 4V-class Li-metal batteries operating at ambient temperature

Abstract:In this study, we prepare ionogels composed of bisphenol A ethoxylate dimethacrylate, poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate, lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide, and 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide or 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide ionic liquids via rapid, scalable, solvent-free UV-induced polymerization. The various hybrid polymer electrolyte formulations are thoroughly characterized using a comprehensive set of physico-chemical and electrochemical methods, including gel content, FTIR, rheology, DTMA, TGA, SEM, cycling voltammetry, impedance spectroscopy, and galvanostatic cycling in laboratory-scale Li-metal cells. We particularly focus on the influence of using two different ionic liquids as reaction medium on the properties of the resulting materials and their electrochemical behaviors. Our results indicate that viscosity affects the polymerization kinetics of the ionogels, which in turn might affect their thermal stability and galvanostatic cycling behavior. In the purpose of promoting overall performance of solid-state batteries, we also present the results of composite electrolytes obtained by introducing Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LLZO) into ionogels and following in-situ UV-polymerisation. The addition of LLZO ceramic results in more porous solid networks, leading to enhanced charge/discharge stability at ambient temperature and higher C-rates featuring 4V-class NMC cathodes, enlightening the promising prospects of the developed materials to be successfully implemented as stable, durable, and efficient electrolytes in next-generation Li-metal cells.

In Situ Forming Gel Polymer Electrolyte for High Energy‐Density Lithium Metal Batteries

Abstract:Gel polymer electrolyte with high ionic conductivity, wide electrochemical stability window and high lithium‐ion transference number is developed. It can improve the cycle performance of lithium metal batteries by stabilizing cathode structure and promoting uniform Li deposition, which is also applicable to current battery technologies. In situ forming gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) is one of the most feasible ways to improve the safety and cycle performances of lithium metal batteries with high energy density. However, most of the in situ formed GPEs are not compatible with high‐voltage cathode materials. Here, this work provides a novel strategy to in situ form GPE based on the mechanism of Ritter reaction. The Ritter reaction in liquid electrolyte has the advantage of appropriate reaction temperature and no additional additives. The polymer chains are cross‐linked by amide groups with the formation of GPE with superior electrochemical properties. The GPE has high ionic conductivity (1.84 mS cm−1), wide electrochemical stability window (>5.25 V) and high lithium ion transference number (≈0.78), compatible with high‐voltage cathode materials. The Li|LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 batteries with in situ formed GPE show excellent long‐term cycle stability (93.4%, 300 cycles). The density functional theory calculation and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy results verify that the amide and nitrile groups are beneficial for stabilizing cathode structure and promoting uniform Li deposition on Li anode. Furthermore, the in situ formed GPE exhibits excellent electrochemical performance in Graphite|LiMn2O4 and Graphite|LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 pouch batteries. This approach is adaptable to current battery technologies, which will be sure to promote the development of high energy‐density lithium‐ion batteries.

Abstract:Poor interfacial contact between solid‐state electrolytes and electrodes limits high‐voltage performance of solid‐state lithium batteries. A new liquid electrolyte is proposed via in‐situ polymerization, incorporating FEC (fluoroethylene carbonate) solvent and ionic liquid PP14TFSI (1‐butyl‐1‐methylpiperidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide). This combination synergistically enhances Li ion transport, achieving a transfer number of 0.58 and improved electrochemical performance. FEC protects collectors from LiPF6 corrosion and promotes a protective interfacial layer. PP14TFSI improves interfacial contact and provides stable components. An interface layer of fluorine and nitrogen composites forms, preventing side reactions. LiCoO2||PPE||Li cell exhibits robust cycling stability at 4.45 V, retaining ~80% capacity after 200 cycles at room temperature with 0.2 C and 1 C rates, showing increased coulombic efficiency. NCM811||PPE||Li cell also displays exceptional cycling. In‐situ polymerization and FEC‐ionic liquid coordination enable high‐voltage solid‐state lithium metal batteries for practical use.
